When did Nickelodeon Jump the shark?

When did Nickelodeon jump the shark? Simple. When they ended the good old shows and seemed to lose the ability to come up with good new shows to replace them.

That would be weird if they did just show a random episode of LOST.  I hate it that its not going to show new episodes in five weeks.

No, I mean that you were just browsing on TV, and you found a channel where they were showing LOST episodes, not on Nick.

You have to be a LOST fan to understand what is happening, and even if you are a fan, you still don't understand everything.

For me, Nickelodeon jumped around 1999. That's when they started cancelling all the old shows that made the network popular. That also happened to be around the same time (as Nicklegends mentioned) that Rugrats began adding all those pointless characters and (as I saw it) correcting all the problems and making it a "perfect" show. Don't believe me? Take a look; they gave Tommy a brother, which he didn't have; Chuckie a sister and a mother, both of which he was lacking (although he did have a mother at one point, who passed away); Grandpa Lou got married to a woman played by Debbie Reynolds, who I don't believe ever really appeared, thereby giving Tommy and Dil two sets of grandparents; and Angelica got an "assistant" in Harold, which I guess was the best they could give her in regards to a younger sibling (I can't really see Drew and Charlotte having another kid).

Then you started getting these really stupid Nicktoons about that time as well. SpongeBob and Invader ZIM were great, and Rocket Power was okay, but pretty much all the others were terrible. The ones that weren't (like Jimmy Neutron) suffered from rerun abuse and became bad really quickly. It was also around this time that their movies started getting really bad. Clockstoppers had probably the dumbest premise for any movie I've heard of, and I would love to know who thought it would be a great idea to have a crossover with The Wild Thornberrys and the Rugrats.

In recent years, I think Nick has tried to lure older kids back to the network with TEENick (or as I used to call it, Teen Ick.), Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide, Unfabulous and that show with what's-her-name's sister (I don't even care anymore). Sadly, it's started to fail miserably. Even their good shows (Kappa Mikey for example) have become really bad in regards to new episodes.

I think Nickelodeon should try releasing a show with humor geared towards older people (like the old episodes of Rugrats. One episode made reference to Clarence Thomas, and another Saddam Hussein.) I think when it's written for older people, the humor becomes better for the younger crowd as well, although they won't understand it until they're older.

Yep. In the episode "Tommy and the Secret Club," Angelica was mad at Tommy because he gave the secret code to Chuckie to get in. She told him, "If you do that, then just anybody can walk in here; Count Draculator, Sadman Husseini, or even Chuckie!"

I never realized what she was saying until a couple years ago when I caught a rerun on Nicktoons Network. There was also one episode where Angelica's father received a package from a "pathetic, groveling employee," which is making me laugh even as I'm typing this.

The TEENick hype AND the fairly oddparents hype if you ask me. SpongeBob is the only good show on Nick now. Ned's Declassified however was also a good show and an exception to the suckiness of TEENick, sadly it's now canceled and hardly even on Nick anymore. As for FOP, like someone said, it has THE most repetitive formula ever thought of, and I just don't know how that monotonous cycle continues to get ratings. It really should just end right here and right now. Nick will find a way to get along without it, they did during that year-long hiatus period, they can do so again for the rest of their existance.

I also liked Jimmy Neutron, but that started kinda sucking by the third season.

Good question. Nick has definately established itself as a powerful television network, raking in large revenues each year.

The secret Nickelodeon has is an evil one. Betray your viewers as they grow older. Always target the new generation audience. No matter what shit they play, kids will want to watch it, and as they grow up, it will become their Legends of the hidden temple, it will have meaning to them, and Nick will continue to get viewers.

The problem is, Legends was actually a good show, I don't see anything good coming from Nick anytime soon. When the final season of Avatar is completed, I doubt there will be anything at all from Nickelodeon worth watching.

Just when I thought Nick couldn't get any worse, they come out with this AWFUL new show "The Mighty B". I watched the first episode and it was the worst piece of crap I had ever seen in my life, to be frank. Unoriginal, unfunny, hideous looking animation, etc. etc.  It was absolute GARBAGE and I wish I didn't take the 30 minutes out of my life to watch it. Nick will just hire anyone to make a cartoon now. It's sad what has become of the network.

Fuck, I remember writing that. Well, with the series finale of Avatar having aired tonight, I don't think I have much use left for Nick besides whatever sad attempt to bring GUTS back Nick@Nite is shooting for.

All through Sozin's comet, I kept seeing commercials for some Fairly Oddparents olympics movie, iCarly double episodes, and more and more of George Lopez.
