The Heart Room / Re: The Unused Door
« on: June 22, 2015, 05:16:03 PM »
In any run in which the artifact was grabbed, "all of the doors of the temple would unlock." So just going by this logic, then episodes in which the artifact was grabbed and the Shrine or Dark Forest was shown would have that right passageway open in most- if not all-  instances if that was actually meant to be used as an accessible route. However, it never opened when any artifacts were grabbed and "all the doors unlocked." Therefore, any episode in which that passageway was opened was just a fluke in one way or another.

One comparison I always wanted to do was how long a player truly lasted in the temple.

A bit after the fact, but here is that comparison for the Season 3 frontrunners.

The Heart Room / Re: Temple Guard Locations
« on: March 07, 2015, 11:35:54 AM »
I've done a few simple calculations regarding the frequency of temple guard placements in each room, and thought I would share them here.

The values presented below are only for guards that were physically encountered en route to the artifact, not ones that were seen upon exiting the temple, nor ones whose locations can be deduced but were not actually encountered. The first percent frequency listed is based on the number of times the room was entered, and the second percent frequency listed was calculated out of all 40 episodes from the season. These values are also based on cumulative frequencies per room space (i.e. it doesn't matter which variation of the room, just whether there was a guard or not). So, for example, in Season 2, the Swamp/Jesters' Court space could only have a guard when it was the Swamp variation, but the presented value is based off of the number of times that space was entered and the total number of guards encountered in that space as a whole for the season, even though all of the guards were encountered when it was the Swamp.

The Heart Room / Re: Some Thoughts about Temple Runs
« on: March 01, 2015, 03:35:42 PM »
Here's a thought about the Enormous Feather of the Me Linh run:

We know that this team successfully reached the artifact from the King's Storeroom, although Karisa did not progress through the temple very quickly. What is interesting is that out of the three King's Storeroom runs from this season, they came the closest to winning, even though they are often regarded as the "worst" of the three teams. The Discarded Seal of Ivan the Terrible team had to complete one extra room objective en route to the King's Storeroom, and the Bent Shaving Pan of Jedidiah Smith team had a more difficult temple guard layout, since Irish was removed one room from the artifact, while Karisa only had to traverse 5 cleared room to reach where her partner left off.

What is interesting is that the Enormous Feather of the Me Linh run could have been a victorious run if Karisa had tried the leftmost armor on the first try. She entered the room with 32 seconds left on the clock. By the time she tried the other two armors and activated the King's Storeroom, there was only 17 seconds left on the clock, meaning she used 15 extra seconds. Given that she made it to the middle of the Pit of the Pendulum and was attempting to exit the temple via the Crypt, had she put those 15 seconds into exiting the temple, she would have won, even with her slow pace and getting lost in the Quicksand Bog.

Had this scenario been the case, what would your thoughts on the run be? Would you enjoy it for being a winning episode, or would the lack of speed counteract the team's success?

The Heart Room / Re: Legends of the Hidden Temple Teams Rankings
« on: February 28, 2015, 03:50:29 PM »
Overall, this was one of the worst teams to enter the temple and they barely miss out of the bottom 10 teams. The Purple Parrots were a better team and they should've gone to the temple. No excuses for Jason and Dana's poor temple run either. Lissy and Nate from "Queen Boadicea" had an identical layout, and they almost pulled off a win! One of the most unlikable teams ever, and that is because everything they did was painful to watch.

The Smashed Printing Plate and Queen Boadicea runs did not have identical paths. Jason and Dana were allowed to progress directly from the Chamber of the Sacred Markers to the Room of the Ancient Warriors (the King's Storeroom could have been completed if Jason chose to head there from the Pit, but would have ended up heading down to the Chamber of the Sacred Markers anyway); Lissy and Nate were forced to complete the King's Storeroom objective in addition to the Chamber of the Sacred Markers. Additionally, Nate was only given the option to head down to the Dark Forest from the Shrine, while multiple doors opened from the Shrine for Jason.

It was most often the case in the Season 1 and 2 temple for multiple doors to be open between the Pit and King's Storeroom, forming a "loop." Many times, a contestant that entered the Observatory could bypass the open Heart Room space and head directly into the King's Storeroom, even though the Heart Room space opened as well. Likewise, contestants that entered the Heart Room space could bypass the Observatory and head directly into the King's Storeroom, even though the Observatory unlocked as well. These doors could be seen unlocking either once the Heart Room space/Observatory objective was completed, or after the King's Storeroom was completed. This "loop"is perfectly evident in runs like Electrified Key of Benjamin Franklin. Another similar example is Silk Sash of Mulan, where Jessie went from the Pit to the Heart Room space, then up into the Observatory; when she was removed, her partner was able to access the Observatory directly. Similarly, in the Golden Stallion of Ali Baba, Kendra was able to form a loop between the central shaft and the Pit. In these two latter examples, the King's Storeroom did not open from either of these rooms, but the overall idea holds true.

Because both the Heart Room space and Observatory were unlocked via the Pit, it would not be surprising if this trend continued for the Priceless Portrait run.

Had Kristen not dilly-dallied by entering the Room of the Mandarin Hand, doubling back to the Pit, and then heading up to the Observatory, this could have been a victorious run. It's a good thing she grabbed the half pendant en route to the Observatory because otherwise, this run would have resulted in a very disappointing triple capture. There are a lot of contestants who get a bad reputation for doubling back, completing unnecessary objectives, or otherwise wasting time. But with Kristen, for whatever reason, her performance does not warrant such a reaction. Kristen's speed on the bottom floor was much better than her performance on the top floor. If she had stayed in the Room of the Mandarin Hand and used those qualities from the bottom floor on the top floor, this could have been really solid victory of a run.

I'd like to think that you aren't a burden. If anything, this whole site is a support system for you. Anything you do or say here gets people behind you, or at least active and talking. And it seems that every time you seek approval or words of encouragement, you get it. So I don't see how you feel that you don't fit in or that nobody cares about you. As far as I can tell, it's the exact opposite.

While it doesn't help their cause much, the Marble Armrest of Xerxes team did have a longer path than the other respective Chamber of the Sacred Markers runs. They were forced down into the Ledges, whereas the other teams were given direct entry to the Pit of the Pendulum via the Crypt. Also, the Shrine was inaccessible from both the Dark Forest and the Quicksand Bog. Noelle tried to find the key in both trees in the Dark Forest and came up empty-handed, and Pat climbed the ladder in the Quicksand Bog but was not allowed to enter the Shrine. I just wanted to point this out, even though their lack of progress in the temple was due to their speed (or, more accurately, their lack thereof) and their inability to effectively complete room objectives, rather than the layout itself.

The Heart Room / Re: Episodes where all three guards were unavoidable?
« on: February 05, 2015, 09:03:45 AM »
The only one I disagree about is Stone Head. You can see the Medusa's Lair door open after Tony completes the objective. Which means that Heather could've tackled that room herself and probably would've done a better job. But one guard was most definitely avoidable in that run. ;)

That was the exact point I was making about Stone Head of the Evil King. It also serves as a general precaution for many Season 1 and Season 2 runs. There were many instances where teams only accessed one door from the Pit to the central shaft, when many times there were multiple entryways available to the contestants. Depending on which doors were open for which runs, many guards in the central shaft could have been avoided.

Similarly, the Heart Room space guard was often avoidable by heading directly down from the Observatory space to the Treasure Room space in Seasons 1 and 2 (or avoid the Observatory by heading directly from the Heart Room to the Treasure Room).

The Heart Room / Re: Episodes where all three guards were unavoidable?
« on: February 04, 2015, 07:46:08 PM »
Golden Spider Web of Robert the Bruce and Lost Taj Mahal Turban of Aurangzeb were other episodes where contestants could not avoid any of the guards.

Other runs where all 3 guards were encountered and may have been forced, depending on access to other pathways:
  • Missing Eye of David, unless the team could have avoided Medusa's Lair by traversing through the Ledges and Rock Quarry en route to the bottom floor of the temple.
  • Lost Lion Tail of Little John, unless the team could have gone along the Troubled Bridge and down the central shaft, instead of entering the Ledges.

Runs in which teams made too little progress in order to determine where the final guard was placed:
  • Unless the last guard was in an inactive armor in the Room of the Ancient Warriors, then all of the guards in Marble Armrest of Xerxes would have been forced.
  • Possibly the Dried Apple Half of William Tell.

Had the team begun by going to the upper entrance, the guard encountered in the Cave of Sighs/Ledges would have been "avoidable," but by the standard you've set, I suppose we can count:
  • Elizabeth I's Golden Ship
  • John Sutter and the Map to the Lost Gold Mine
  • Henry VIII's Great Seal
  • Silver Cannonball of Grandy Nanny
  • Cracked Crown of the Spanish King
  • Golden Pepperoni of Catherine de Medici

If the team could not have avoided the Crypt, then Season 3's Comet-Embroidered Battle Flag of William the Conqueror and Royal Torque of Queen Boadicea would have been forced as well.

Another issue with Seasons 1 and 2 (predominantly Season 1) was that multiple doors were unlocked from the Pit, and often central shaft rooms with guards could be avoided by entering a different central shaft room. For example, both of the central shaft guards in The Pendant of Kamehameha could have been bypassed if the team had tried to go from the Pit to the Observatory (the sundial opened back up to the Pit). Similarly, many runs may have allowed the team to bypass a guard in one of the central shaft rooms, if they had instead chosen to enter a different one. Others include Lost Love Letter of Captain John Smith and Stone Head of the Evil King.

The Heart Room / Re: Some Thoughts about Temple Runs

I can't believe anyone would give Mike a hard time. He did a solid job in the temple and didn't do anything wrong. He moved swiftly through all the temple rooms and had the fastest Silver Monkey completion ever. Kelli was entirely to be blamed for this loss. She had a 1:20 and a clear path to the Secret Password, but she blew it big time by taking a wrong path (she was lucky her team had 2 Pendants) and was trying to complete objectives already done. And she moved so slow too. This team could've won if Kelli hauled her ass and completed the two bottom floor objectives, which were relatively easy. Just like the Paintbrush said about Jessica in the Cosa Rara run going into the temple first, the Orange Iguanas in Thornwood Gavel would've still lost even if Kelli went in first. She just had too many problems and had no idea what to do. Disappointing loss like Enormous Feather, Good-Luck Watch, and Bandit Queen with slow female runners.

The only way I think would've made this run better was if Mike went into the King's Storeroom and get removed in the Secret Password. Not only his route would be shorter, Kelli would also have no excuse to detour again. I don't think they would've won either way because she was way too stupid.  :afro:

It's not that Michael has a bad rep; it's that his performance is downplayed because of the success of his episode's run as a whole. That is why I find some of the results for player rankings to be a bit skewed. I feel like there is a "tainted" image of a contestant because of the episode he or she is part of, even if we can't recall details about a contestant's performance, whether or not it is because we haven't seen the episode in a long time. Sometimes going back and rewatching an episode- as was the case for Justin in Cosa Rara, for example- can bring to light the misconceptions (either extolling or criticizing) we have created about the contestants.

I feel that Michael (Thornwood Gavel of Judge Roy Bean) falls under a similar case. He was a very strong contestant, entering his seventh room with 1:20 on the clock. That is very impressive for a Season 3 run, and even more so in that it predominantly featured completion of the upper floor. Additionally, he had one of the fastest, if not THE fastest completion of the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. He may not have sprinted, but he also never paused or hesitated at all in the temple.

The bad reputation this temple run has is because Kelli deviated from Michael's path and spent too long in the King's Storeroom and Room of the Secret Password. (Even so, she was not the only contestant to keep her mouthpiece in her mouth when reciting the passwords, so the fact that she gets criticized the most out of any contestant for that is beyond me.)

Nevertheless, Michael had a strong performance both in the temple and throughout his episode, and I feel his evaluation underestimates his efforts.

While Veronica and Thomas struggled in the temple, the path was strange. And while their success was very low, I can sympathize with them for their layout (which, I must point out, is different than sympathizing for them due to their ability). This was the first and only Season 3 episode that featured a dead end. This was also the first episode of the new season, so it was more-or-less a "testing ground" for the new rooms and objectives. Once the producers saw that adding dead ends to the already more difficult series of rooms was excessive, they probably realized that it was sufficiently difficult to have teams proceed in a predetermined path, rather than have to deal with dead ends on top of it. This pattern of trial-by-error and adjusting/clarifying episode-by-episode was seen in several moat crossings and temple games throughout the duration of the show as well. So all in all, I am not surprised that the producers chose to get rid of the dead ends for Season 3.

Another point of interest I want to mention in regards to the Bifocal Monocle run occurred after Veronica encountered the temple guard in the Ancient Warriors. One of the cameramen (or perhaps another crew person, etc.) mumbles something about a "door" when there is 0:55 left on the temple run clock. She then kneels down by the door that led back into the Chamber of the Sacred Markers before looking at the cameraman, hesitating, and proceeding up to the King's Storeroom. Perhaps she intended on returning to the Chamber, but was influenced otherwise to head to the King's Storeroom.

15
Had the door to the Tomb of the Headless Kings been activated on Jay's first try, I think he would have had enough time to make significant progress in escaping from the temple.

I hope I don't sound pessimistic, but the middle painting not working on the first try may not have been a "production error." There were plenty of instances where contestants tried the correct painting, moved on to another painting, and then had to go back and try the correct one again. Season 3 episodes where the same painting was tried more than once include Secret Map of the Bandit Queen, Snow Cone of Mount Kilimanjaro, Marble Armrest of Xerxes, and finally Good-Luck Watch of Empress Eugenie. While Jay is thought highly of and the contestants from the other runs not as much, we really can't discredit the idea that Jay didn't properly trigger the door to the Tomb of the Headless Kings on the first try.
