The Heart Room / Re: Legends is coming back!

Spoilers below. You know the drill...

So it was Nick from Henry VIII and Josh from Empress Theodora that returned and they were on the same team, the Blue Barracudas. I thought all players in this episode were going to be ones that competed in the Nick version, so that was a little disappointing. What was more disappointing was Kirk Fogg's guest appearance. He was hiding in the Dark Forest during the temple run pretending to be the host and shaking the temple runners' hands as they were running through the temple. In this case, it was Nick and Josh. I thought Kirk would have a bigger role than this and it turns out him being in the Dark Forest briefly chatting with Nick and Josh may have cost them the grand prize. The team made it to the object, but fell a few seconds short of victory. I think the brief amount of time they stopped to be with Kirk cost them the win. If the producers were trying to prevent a win and save some money, they succeeded here.

Edit: Just wanted to throw it out there that I was happy to see Kirk again. It's just that I wish his role in this episode was better.

Watch one of the returning teams be John and Tia. :P

I'm happy to see that Kirk Fogg is making an appearance this Sunday and I'm also looking forward to seeing former contestants again, even if they didn't make it to the temple or if they made it to the temple and did poorly. Hopefully we get to see a flashback or two of each team or player from the Nick version.

About what happened in last night's temple run. It's kind of bothering me. Spoiler below:

In the Nick version, whenever a contestant struggled to put the monkey together, Kirk Fogg would usually speak into his microphone to help them out and the contestant could easily hear him. In the CW version, Cristela Alonzo really isn't loud whenever a contestant is struggling with the monkey, as was the case with last night's episode. She wasn't loud at all and the guy couldn't hear her. I think it would've helped the guy out big time if he could hear her better. That doesn't excuse the poor attempt (seriously, you can walk in front of the monkey pedestal in this version to get a better look, as Tyler did last night), but I really think this version doesn't do a good enough job at having the host (and the second runner for that matter) be loud enough for the temple runner to hear if they're struggling in the temple. Maybe if Cristela had a mic like Kirk did, this wouldn't be a problem.

All those kids who struggled in the past to put the Silver Monkey together? You can feel a little better now after seeing tonight's attempt. That was awful. I think that guy took over a minute because the belly was on wrong. He pulled a Larry from Mysterious Manuscript.

Came in here to say that yesterday, I tested positive for covid-19. I didn't feel good a day or two before the test, but right now, I'm the worst I have felt. Covid is not pleasant to have.

Man I miss many old members here. PPF, TAW, TBK, ALF, RJF, PP4L if you see this please say you are still here.

I'm mainly worried about PPF because I was responsible for her withdrawal from this website. I think it was an argument over whether Lion-Slashed Jacket or Melted Head had the better temple run and I lost my cool. I could be remembering the details wrong, but I remember being responsible for her leaving and I still haven't gotten over that, especially since she said she would never forgive me. I hope she's doing okay. I really regret getting mad at her, especially over a show like Legends. :(

I hope everyone else is doing okay too. The people you mentioned have all probably moved on to other things in life, but I still hope they're well.

FIRST TEMPLE WIN OF THE REBOOT!!! It was a solo win too! I honestly didn't think this would be a win because the first runner struggled with the Room of the Heartless (I think that's what it's called). She even got met by a temple guard that was hiding behind the locked door after the objective was finally complete, similar to that of the Chamber of the Sacred Markers. It was early on in the run when that happened, so I thought she would eventually get caught by a second guard at some point. However, in the Pit of Despair, she chose to go right, into the Spider's Lair where she then entered the Room of the Lost Treasure (again, I'm not sure if that room name is correct; I'll get these names figured out eventually, lol). She was slow with this one too, but once she was done, she entered the Shrine of the Silver Monkey and I was fully expecting a second temple guard here. However, it didn't happen. She assembled the statue easily, entered the Room of the Beloved (I think that's it) where the Talking Rooster (yes, really) was at, and won with plenty of time to spare.

I'd say the Red Jaguars got lucky here. I really do believe this temple run had an alternate path because those other two temple guards had to be somewhere. So maybe this reboot's temple runs aren't always set to be one path after all? If that's the case, then I'll say that I'm glad. Multiple pathways in the temple are a good thing in my opinion. The more options, the better. That being said, let's just hope these teams avoid pulling an Electrified Key by taking the longest route possible.

End spoiler. Putting this here so that it's harder for people to read what was said above if anyone chooses to do a quick reply.

A random thought popped up in my head while I was at work today:

What would happen in this reboot if in the temple, a contestant drops a piece of the Silver Monkey into the room below (just like in the Montezuma and Henry Hudson episodes)? The Dark Forest isn't directly below it now and even then, this Dark Forest doesn't have trees with temple spirits in them.

Well that temple run kind of sucked. The first runner (Blue Barracudas made it to the temple by the way) wasted way too much time in the Royal Rage Room or whatever it's called. She struggled mightily to break the pots. Either she wasn't strong enough or those are some really tough pots to break. Her poor partner didn't have a chance once she got caught by the second guard.

October 10th is approaching fast! I already have the show recorded in case I forget. I'm hoping it's good!

Also, would you like to see a "Legends of the Hidden Temple at Super Bowl" special next February like I do?

Forgot to answer this. Meant to do that earlier.

Would I like to see that? Sure. Will it happen? Realistically, it's most likely not gonna happen.

Remember we got a “Double Dare at Super Bowl” special? Why don’t you think the “Legends of the Hidden Temple at Super Bowl” special will happen next February? Could it happen in February of 2023?

I don't remember a Double Dare at Super Bowl special happening. Unless it did and I just haven't paid attention.

I guess you can say I'm pessimistic and I don't have much faith in the NFL to do this for Legends.

Yeah, NFL and Double Dare did a special last February. All I remember was that the course was like 10 obstacles and 90 seconds and each team ran it individually, both team beat it, and the show decided to give both teams $10,000 for their charities.

I would love to see Legends at the Super Bowl, but unfortunately I don’t think that’ll happen unless they do a Super Bowl special episode featuring players playing for charity.

I must be really behind on the times then.

A couple of things I forgot to mention.

1. The prizes are different here. I forget what the prize was for the team that lost in the temple games (I think it was a good prize), but the losing team in the moat got to keep their team shirt as their prize and the losing team at the steps got some Legends based memorabilia. $2,500 is the prize for getting to the temple, $10,000 for grabbing the item, and $25,000 for bringing it out of the temple in time. Long gone are the days of winning a stupid CD-I Player.

2. The commercials were total pace breakers. There was one in between temple games and one after the second temple guard encounter. The timing with those commercials was really annoying.

3. I didn't think the close-ups of the temple guards once they appeared were necessary.

4. I didn't find the music in this version to be memorable or remarkable.

Also, the ratings for this episode were.....bad. Source: https://www.spoilertv.com/2021/10/tv-ratings-for-sunday-10th-october-2021.html

282k viewers and a 0.1 18-49 rating. Yikes. I really hope this show gets a second season, but with ratings like that, it might not happen. :(

Oh yeah, I gotta give a shout-out to the Purple Parrots for making it to the temple on the first episode of the reboot! That put a smile on my face. :)

Too bad they didn't even reach the item in the temple run. They almost had to go through every room, which was brutal, even with the increase in the time limit. The life as a Purple Parrot fan can still be a tough one. :(

Edit: Also, another episode where the item was in the Dark Forest, another episode where it wasn't acquired. We may never see an item be obtained in that room. XD

I wouldn't say the reboot sucks. It's only one episode in and I did like some things about it. However, I will say I found the first episode to be underwhelming. I'll start with the negatives.

-As TMH said, I'm not a fan of those contestant interjections. They felt like pace breakers more than anything else. While it's nice to learn more about the contestants, Legends in the past worked really well without the interjections similar to what a lot of reality shows have. These interjections result in episodes being an hour long. I honestly preferred it when Legends was half an hour. It made the episodes more digestible if you get what I mean.

-Each episode will only have four teams of two competing. This first episode saw the exclusion of the Orange Iguanas and the Silver Snakes. However, judging by the second episode promo at the end of this episode, it looks like the Silver Snakes will appear. I wish it stayed at six teams, but that's just my personal preference. This really wasn't too big of a con in my opinion.

-New host Cristela Alonzo's first performance was underwhelming. Echoing what TMH said, she didn't seem that invested, which isn't good at all. I know Kirk took a while to get things going and obviously Cristela could get it going at some point too, but her first episode wasn't all that impressive.

-The way the show told the story with the cartoony looking images looked.....cheesy? I think that's the right word to describe it? I wasn't too big on that. I thought it looked silly. Maybe that's a better word to describe it. I wasn't a fan of that.

-Another thing I didn't like is the fact that temple runs can no longer end via temple guard capture. Yep, another thing that TMH mentioned as being a negative. It was fun watching teams go through the temple and wondering if they would make it to the artifact or get caught by the third temple guard if the team had one or one and a half pendant of life. Now teams are guaranteed to enter the temple with two pendants due to how the temple games work (two games, one pendant earned for each one and if the teams split the games, a tiebreaker determines the winner and it nets them a second pendant). Obviously it would suck if a run ends in capture super early like in Elizabeth I's Golden Ship, but early ends were rare anyway and usually it was the team's fault for letting it happen (*cough* Harriet Tubman run *cough*). I feel like doing it this way with team's being guaranteed two pendants for the temple run kind of ruins the tension, especially when it looks like there's only one set path the team can take to get to the item.

-Did we really need the Chime sponsorship? We already get plenty of those ads on YouTube, so seeing them again here left me feeling annoyed.

Now the positives. I'll just sum it up with this sentence: even though things look different, it's still Legends of the Hidden Temple.

+The Moat was a little different, but it still felt like the moat if you catch my drift. It involved doing multiple things before ringing the gong. The first three teams to succeed move on, the last team is eliminated.

+The Steps of Knowledge are pretty much unchanged and that's fine. No complaints here other than the aforementioned silly looking imagery used to tell the story.

+The Temple Games were fun to watch. It's only two games this time around, but I still found it to be entertaining. Each game was team based and they both had multiple objectives that had to be completed before hitting the button on the gong pedestal. The second game had one team play the game while the other team stood back and watched to see how fast they could complete it. If the second team isn't able to beat the first team's time, then a pendant is awarded to the first team. I thought the temple games were good. I like it.

+The temple has been revamped with some new rooms and I think they're good. Rooms like The Dark Forest, Spider's Lair, and the ever popular Shrine of the Silver Monkey are back, but the new rooms work rather well. I forgot the names already, but one room had the temple runner reach through three skeleton bodies to find a beating heart which must be inserted into a slot to open the door. Another room requires the runner to pull sticks out of a cylinder which drops objects onto the ground. One of them is a jade token and the player must find it and insert it into a slot to advance. Another room has the player finding articles of clothes to put onto a queen mannequin and once all of them are on, the next room opens. I like that the show is trying new things with the rooms and I thought they were good.

+Dee Bradley Baker back as the voice of Olmec! Of course this is a positive.

There are a couple of things I'm indifferent about. One is the lack of Kirk Fogg. I would've loved to see him make an appearance, even if it meant him being a cameo. However, I'm not gonna lose sleep over this. Also, temple runs are now 4 minutes instead of the previous three. I don't know how to feel about that yet, so I'll hold off on judgment here for now.

All in all, not bad. However, it wasn't that impressive. I feel like the cons outweigh the pros, which is a shame. Still, it is the first episode, so things could always improve. At least I hope.
