"Legends" article in LA Times (1994)
« on: April 13, 2008, 09:23:04 AM »
I found this article while searching online last night  (N.F. Mendoza.  "Shows for Youngsters and Their Parents Too:  Nickelodeon and the 'Temple' of Treasure Mix History and Games," 7/10/1994, TV pg. 7).

Some highlights from the article:

* The second season began airing in June of 1994.
* Stone and Stanley referred to the show as "edutainment"
* Stanley:  "We just reached into the history of legendary people so we could base the show in fact and combined it with games and stunts that were fun to watch."
* A rare off-camera Fogg quote:  "You can get a real winning team if you have, say, a brainiac kid and a strong one, or kids who are a combination of both."
* According to Stanley, the games begin in the prototype stage, and adults test them out.  Then, they build a final model at Universal and test it with kids like those on the show.
* Stone:  "We really designed the show for channel surfers, for the MTV kid audience.  That's why the temple changes, the games change, everything changes to keep their interest.  Each of the games are [sic] only one minute long so something new is always happening."
* Besides advertising in local papers, elementary schools in the Orlando area were also recruited for potential contestants.  Also, some contestants happened to come from the studio tours of Universal.

Hopefully, when I have more time, I'll try to find some more stuff like this at the library or something.

The full text is not online.   :(   I found it as part of a newspaper database subscription my library has.  But you can get a free copy of the abstract here (4th link down):
