Episode 9: Ludwig van Beethoven's Hearing Trumpet

(Camera moves through a thick jungle taking two wrong turns and finally revealing King Olmec)

Olmec: Legends of the Hidden Temple!

(Title card forms)

Olmec: With your guide, Kirk Fogg!

(Title card shatters)

Olmec: And here he is now!

(Kirk swings on a rope into the new Legends set)

Kirk: Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Thank you Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple. The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan temple guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Which one are we gonna hear about today?

Olmec: The legend of Ludwig van Beethoven's hearing trumpet.

Kirk: Oh, Ludwig van Beethoven's hearing trumpet. Well, the legend is set and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the hearing trumpet. Will it be:

(Camera shows each team cheering)

The Red Jaguars?

The Blue Barracudas?

The Green Monkeys?

The Orange Iguanas?

The Purple Parrots?

Or the Silver Snakes?

They'll have to pass some pretty tough physical and mental tests, and in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's temple. But first, the must cross the moat, and Olmec will tell them how they'll have to do it today.

Olmec: Before each of you is an ancient rope that hangs above the moat. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will hang from the rope with their hands and feet and shinny across to the other side. Once the first player is safely across, their partner will cross the same way. When both players have crossed the moat, run over and hit the gong. (Kirk hits the Silver Snakes' gong) The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round.

Kirk: OK teams, are you ready?

Teams: YEAH!

Kirk: Are you ready Olmec?

Olmec: Always ready Kirk!

Kirk: On your mark, get set, GO!

Blue Barracudas - 0:24
Purple Parrots - 0:31
Red Jaguars - 0:43
Orange Iguanas - 0:48

We've got our four teams right here! They are: The Red Jaguars, the Blue Barracudas, the Orange Iguanas, and the Purple Parrots!

Kirk: As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about Ludwig van Beethoven's hearing trumpet. Pay attention teams, because your knowledge of the legend will bring you one step closer to Olmec's temple.

Olmec: One of the most famous music composers was Ludwig van Beethoven. In his early years, he had already manifested into a magnificent musician, especially for the piano. In March of 1778, he performed his first public performance, and his father, Johann, placed him as a child prodigy, saying that he was only six years old when in fact he was actually seven. Throughout his lifetime, Beethoven continued to make masterpiece after masterpiece of musical appreciation, with nine symphonies, almost ten concertos, and seventeen string quartets, just to name a few. However, in 1796, Beethoven suffered a severe case of tinnitus, making him go ultimately deaf. Nevertheless, he continued his works till his death. A large collection of Beethoven's hearing aids such as a special ear horn can be viewed at the Beethoven House Museum in Bonn, Germany, but another hearing trumpet ended up in the temple. Your task is to find the hearing trumpet, and bring it back here.

Kirk: Thank you Olmec, now tell us, where is this hearing trumpet?

Olmec: Ludwig van Beethoven's hearing trumpet can be found in the Bamboo Forest.

Kirk: Teams, you're now standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In a minute, Olmec will ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. If you're right, you'll move down to the next level. But if you're wrong or ran out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance to answer. The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's temple. Olmec, we're now ready for your first question.

Olmec: Was Beethoven born in…Bonn, Berlin, or Gera?

(Female Blue Barracuda rings in)

Kirk: Blue Barracudas

Female Blue Barracuda: Bonn.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Nice job!

(Blue Barracudas move down)

Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: The city of Bonn is located in…Germany–?

(Female Blue Barracuda rings in)

Kirk: Blue Barracudas

Female Blue Barracuda: Germany.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: They got it again!

(Blue Barracudas move down)

Now you guys are one step away. Next question.

Olmec: In what year did Beethoven perform his first public performance? 1776, 1777 or–?

(Male Blue Barracuda rings in)

Kirk: Blue Barracudas

Male Blue Barracuda: 1778.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: We got our first team that swept to the Temple Games!

(Blue Barracudas move down, high ten, jump up and down, and hug)

We still need one more team. Next question.

Olmec: On what month of that year was the performance? May, June, or March?

(Male Orange Iguana rings in)

Kirk: Orange Iguanas

Male Orange Iguana: March.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Nice job!

(Orange Iguanas move down)

Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: Who called Ludwig a child prodigy? Johann Albrechtsberger, Johann van Beethoven, or–?

(Female Purple Parrot rings in)

Kirk: Purple Parrots

Female Purple Parrot: Johann van Beethoven.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Nice job!

(Purple Parrots move down)

Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: Johann was Ludwig's…?

(Male Red Jaguar rings in)

Kirk: Red Jaguars

Male Red Jaguar: His father.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Now you're on the board Red Jaguars!

(Red Jaguars move down)

Who'll join the Blue Barracudas? Next question.

Olmec: Johann exclaimed that Ludwig was how old that year? Five, six, or seven?

(Female Red Jaguar rings in)

Kirk: Red Jaguars

Female Red Jaguar: Six.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Nice job!

(Red Jaguars move down)

Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: How old was Ludwig in truth that year? Seven, eight, or nine?

(Female Orange Iguana rings in)

Kirk: Orange Iguanas

Female Orange Iguana: Seven.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Step down Orange Iguanas!

(Orange Iguanas move down)

Now you guys are tied up with the Red Jaguars. Next question.

Olmec: How many symphonies did Beethoven write?

(Male Red Jaguar rings in)

Kirk: Red Jaguars

Male Red Jaguar: Nine.

Olmec: That is correct!

(Red Jaguars move down, high ten, and hug each other and the Blue Barracudas)

Kirk: We've got our two teams that are going head to head in the Temple Games! They are: The Red Jaguars! And the Blue Barracudas!

Kirk: Welcome back to Legends, now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest. But before we get started, I wanna talk to our team players. On the Red Jaguars we have:

Holly: Holly.

Kirk: How old are you Holly?

Holly: 11.

Kirk: It says here that you like to sing.

Holly: Well I sing in my school chorus.

Kirk: What's your favorite song to sing?

Holly: Billy and Ming Do the Bebop Thing.

Kirk: Nice. Now who are you?

Cody: Cody.

And how old are you?

Cody: 13.

Kirk: It says here that you write comic strips.

Cody: Yeah, I write 'em when I got nothing else to do. I'll let anyone read 'em.

Kirk: I'd love to. Let's hear it for the Red Jaguars!

Why would I ever forget about the Blue Barracudas? Who are you?

Marisa: Marisa McCartney. I'm 14 years old.

Kirk: It says here that you'd like to be in a play.

Marisa: Well I saw my cousin and some of my friends in many plays and I'm afraid I'll never will be in one.

Kirk: I'm sure you will. Now who are you?

Ian: Ian Richardson. I'm 12 years old.

Kirk: It says here that you take guitar lessons.

Ian: Yeah, I'm still learning. I started this year.

Kirk: That's the Blue Barracudas! Let's hear it for 'em!

Why don't you guys get set up for the second temple game over there and girls get set up for the first one here. In the temple games, teams are competing to win Pendants of Life. The winning team will need those pendants to protect them from the dreaded temple guards as they make their way through the temple. There are three temple games, and Olmec will tell us about the first one.

Olmec: Some fans of Beethoven like to have a bust of the musician around the house. You are at the base of a mountain full of holes. When Kirk gives the signal, climb up the mountain with your bust of Beethoven by placing your pegs in the holes. Once at the top, place it on the pedestal, then carefully make your way back to the bottom. The first player to complete this task, OR the player furthest along in 60 seconds wins!

Kirk: Don't worry people. These busts are made of styrofoam. Let's put 60 seconds on the clock! On your mark, get set, GO!

Holly - Done (0:07 Remaining)
Marisa

Kirk: That's it! Red Jaguar made it down while the Blue Barracuda was putting the bust on the pedestal. That means the Red Jaguars get another half Pendant of Life! Blue Barracudas can catch up in the next game; it's worth a half pendant. Olmec, tell us about it.

Olmec: Even after going deaf, Beethoven could still imagine what his music sounded like. In this, game, we'll be able to see it! Before you is a two-sided wall with knobs sticking out. When Kirk gives the signal, climb up one side the wall, placing musical notes on the way. After putting one up, come back down and start again with another. The player with all five notes on the wall, OR the player furthest along in 60 seconds wins!

Kirk: Let's put 60 seconds on the clock! On your mark, get set, GO!

Cody - 5 (0:07 Remaining)
Ian - 4

Kirk: That's it! The Red Jaguars got all five of theirs; the Blue Barracudas got four. That means the Red Jaguars get another half Pendant of Life! The Blue Barracudas still don't have a pendant, but they can tie in the next game. Olmec, tell us about it.

Olmec: Throughout his life, Beethoven wrote many musical works, using up hundreds of music sheets to write on. You are wrapped up in a long strand of music sheets. When Kirk gives the signal, unravel your strand from yourself to your partner, then back again. The first team that completes this task, OR the team furthest along in 60 seconds wins!

Kirk: They're wrapped up in Beethoven's music, so let's put 60 seconds on the clock! On your mark, get set, GO!

Red Jaguars - 1/2 Done
Blue Barracudas - Done (0:09 Remaining)

Kirk: That's it! The Blue Barracudas unraveled their cloth first. They get a full pendant, we got a tie, let's bring in the tiebreaker pedestal!

(Spotters bring in the tiebreaker)

Alright players, put your hands around the gong. I'll give you the tiebreaker rules: In a second, Olmec will ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, hit the gong in front of you. If you're right, you and your partner will be going inside the temple in search of the hearing trumpet. If you're wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other team a chance to answer. All clear? Alright, Olmec, we're ready for your final question.

Olmec: How many concertos did Beethoven complete? Eight out of ten, nine out of ten, or–?

(Marisa rings in)

Kirk: Blue Barracudas

Marisa: Nine out of ten.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: The Blue Barracudas are going to the temple!

Kirk: Welcome back! The Blue Barracudas have earned the right to enter Olmec's temple. But before they get started, Olmec's gonna give them some information to help them retrieve Ludwig van Beethoven's hearing trumpet.

Olmec: You could start by running up the stairs to the Crypt! Grab the book from the skeleton and pass into the Pit of Despair. Here, you must choose your next path. You could race up to the King's Storeroom, smash the clay pots and find the key that could take you down into Medusa's Lair. Place the snakes in Medusa's head and pass into the Room of the Ancient Warriors. Place yourself in the correct armor and open the door to the SHRIIIIIIINE of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Clockwork Room. Turn the gears to lift the weight, and you can climb down into the Dungeon where you could smash to the Dark Forest. But beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees. Find the key in the tree, and you'll enter the Bamboo Forest. If you escape, you could gain entry to the Throne Room. Sit upon the Throne of the Pretender, then race through the pit, CLIMB through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the temple gate. The choices are yours and yours alone. You won one pendant in the temple games. Who's going first?

Marisa: I am!

Olmec: Very well, Marisa. When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the temple and make your way towards the hearing trumpet. Hidden inside the temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your pendant for an extra life and go on. BUT if you're caught without a pendant, you will be taken out of the temple, and it'll be Ian's turn to enter and try his luck. If you can reach the hearing trumpet, all of the doors of the temple will instantly unlock and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the gates with the hearing trumpet in three minutes and you will both be handsomely rewarded and here's how:

Dee Bradley Baker:

First, you're both going to get…iON Isp31b Party Starter Bluetooth Speakers! The ISP31B Ion Party Starter Bluetooth Speakers kickstart most any event. Fun for small parties at home and make a nice change of pace at an office birthday party. The compact black Bluetooth speakers deliver excellent sound and the bulb projects pulsating, multi-colored party lights onto walls and ceilings. You can wirelessly stream music from most any Bluetooth-compatible device. The full-range speakers come complete with a long-lasting lithium-Ion battery and a USB charger. From iON Audio.

If you can grab the hearing trumpet before three minutes is up, you'll also receive…an Intex Explorer K2 2-Person Inflatable Kayak Set! This kayak set includes Aluminum Oars and High Output Air Pump, and an adjustable inflatable seat with backrest. From Intex.

And if you get the hearing trumpet out of the temple before three minutes is up, then you'll both be going to Punta Cana! Blue Beach Punta Cana is a 12 two story buildings and the most intimate rooftop, Blue Pod Suites spread across six acres with 393 lineal feet of private access to the stunning Cabeza de Toro Beach. 38 luxurious and spacious suites, conveniently located in the main building with a design appeal to attract the contemporary traveller seeking ultimate luxury.

Kirk: Punta Cana! I can tell they wanna go there, so let's get stared here. Olmec, lower your gate!

(Olmec moans gutturally while the gate lowers)

Kirk: Get in position. Mouthpieces in. Put three minutes on the clock!

(Timer bangs down)

Kirk: On your mark, get set, GO!

(Temple run music starts and HUD moves in on screen)

Marisa heads up into the Crypt, tries the camera-right skeleton which opens up the Pit of Despair and is greeted by a temple guard (2:54)! She gives up her pendant and heads down into the pit. She makes it across without falling and heads into Medusa's Lair. She puts the snakes in one by one, and once the fifth snake was placed (2:29), heads into the Room of the Ancient Warriors. She tries the camera-right armor which opens up the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (2:22). She heads into the room and assembles the silver monkey in 20 seconds. Both the Dungeon and the Dark Forest were locked from the shrine, so Marisa had no choice but to enter the Clockwork Room. She turns the gears, which lifts the weight blocking access to the Dungeon (2:00). She climbs down and busts through the Stone Wall into the Dark Forest. She tries the camera-left tree which has no key, then the camera-right which has the key. She opens up the Bamboo Forest (1:41), makes her way across the bamboo poles and grabs the hearing trumpet (1:32). She then makes her way out of the Bamboo Forest and into the Throne Room. The Pit of Despair and the Ledges may have slowed her down a bit, but she made it out with 1:08 remaining!
