Episode 13: Harry Houdini's Milk Can

(Camera moves through a thick jungle taking two wrong turns and finally revealing King Olmec)

Olmec: Legends of the Hidden Temple!

(Title card forms)

Olmec: With your guide, Kirk Fogg!

(Title card shatters)

Olmec: And here he is now!

(Kirk swings on a rope into the new Legends set)

Kirk: Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Thank you Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple. The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan temple guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Which one are we gonna hear about today?

Olmec: The legend of Harry Houdini's milk can.

Kirk: Oh, Harry Houdini's milk can. Well, the legend is set and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the milk can. Will it be:

(Camera shows each team cheering)

The Red Jaguars?

The Blue Barracudas?

The Green Monkeys?

The Orange Iguanas?

The Purple Parrots?

Or the Silver Snakes?

They'll have to pass some pretty tough physical and mental tests, and in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's temple. But first, the must cross the moat, and Olmec will tell them how they'll have to do it today.

Olmec: Before each of you is an ancient rope that hangs above the moat. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will hang from the rope with their hands and feet and shinny across to the other side. Once the first player is safely across, their partner will cross the same way. When both players have crossed the moat, run over and hit the gong. (Kirk hits the Silver Snakes' gong) The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round.

Kirk: OK teams, are you ready?

Teams: YEAH!

Kirk: Are you ready Olmec?

Olmec: Ready when you are Kirk!

Kirk: On your mark, get set, GO!

Green Monkeys - 0:20

We've got our four teams right here! They are: The Red Jaguars, the Blue Barracudas, the Green Monkeys, and the Orange Iguanas!

Kirk: As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about Harry Houdini's milk can. Pay attention teams, because your knowledge of the legend will bring you one step closer to Olmec's temple.

Olmec: One of the most famous magicians in history was the Hungarian-born American, Harry Houdini. In 1908, he introduced to the public an escape act that he made up himself.

Houdini: This, ladies and gentlemen, is what I call the "Milk Can" escape. Here you see is an over-sized milk can filled with water. In a minute, I will be handcuffed, then place myself in the milk can, which will be locked from the outside. When all the locks have been secured, there will be a curtain in front, and I shall have exactly 90 seconds to escape before I drown.

Olmec: The preparations were set. 90 seconds later, Houdini emerged from the curtain, freed from the can and the handcuffs. The audience was dumbfounded.

Audience member #1: It's amazing!

Audience member #2: How did he do that?

Olmec: Houdini kept this part of his act until 1912. When others had started to copy off this routine, Harry had to replaced the milk can with something new. Years later, the milk can arrived at the Temple. Your quest is to find the milk can, and bring it back here.

Kirk: Thank you Olmec, now tell us, where is this milk can?

Olmec: Harry Houdini's milk can can be found in the Room of the Ancient Warriors.

Kirk: Teams, you're now standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In a minute, Olmec will ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. If you're right, you'll move down to the next level. But if you're wrong or ran out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance to answer. The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's temple. Olmec, we're now ready for your first question.

Olmec: Although Houdini was an American, he was a natively born…German, Hungarian, or–?

(Male Green Monkey rings in)

Kirk: Green Monkeys

Male Green Monkey: Hungarian.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Nice job!

(Green Monkeys move down)

Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: Was Houdini–?

(Female Orange Iguana rings in)

Kirk: Orange Iguanas

Female Orange Iguana: He was a magician.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Right before Olmec could finish! Step down Orange Iguanas!

(Orange Iguanas move down)

Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: Harry Houdini was also known to be a skeptic, who is a person that has…doubts on excepted beliefs–?

(Male Green Monkey rings in)

Kirk: Green Monkeys

Male Green Monkey: Doubts on expected beliefs.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Step down Green Monkeys!

(Green Monkeys move down)

Now you guys are one step away. Next question.

Olmec: Houdini started is famous "Milk Can" escape act in…1904, 1908, or–?

(Male Orange Iguana rings in)

Kirk: Orange Iguanas

Male Orange Iguana: 1908.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Step down Orange Iguanas!

(Orange Iguanas move down)

Now you guys are tied up with the Green Monkeys. Next question.

Olmec: Was the milk can filled with…milk, water, or–?

(Female Blue Barracuda rings in)

Kirk: Blue Barracudas

Female Blue Barracuda: Water.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Step down Blue Barracudas! Now you guys are on the board!

(Blue Barracudas move down)

Next question, Olmec.

Olmec: In addition to escaping the milk can, Houdini also had to get out of–?

(Male Blue Barracuda rings in)

Kirk: Blue Barracudas

Male Blue Barracuda: Handcuffs.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Right again!

(Blue Barracudas move down)

Now we got three teams on the second-to-last step. Next question.

Olmec: The lid of the can was sealed with–?

(Female Orange Iguana rings in)

Kirk: Orange Iguanas

Female Orange Iguana: Locks.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: We got our first team! It's the Orange Iguanas!

(Orange Iguanas move down, high ten, and hug)

Olmec: How many seconds did Houdini have to escape the milk can? 60, 90, or 120?

(Male Red Jaguar rings in)

Kirk: Red Jaguars

Male Red Jaguar: 90.

Olmec: That is correct!

Kirk: Now you're on the board Red Jaguars!

(Red Jaguars move down)

Olmec: During his escape, the can was covered behind a…towel, curtain, or–?

(Female Green Monkey rings in)

Kirk: Green Monkeys

Female Green Monkey: A curtain.

Olmec: That is correct!

(Green Monkeys move down and high ten, and hug each other and the Orange Iguanas)

Kirk: We've got our two teams that are going head to head in the Temple Games! They are: The Green Monkeys! And the Orange Iguanas!

Kirk: Welcome back to Legends, now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest. But before we get started, I wanna talk to our team players. On the Green Monkeys we have:

Owen: Owen.

Kirk: How old are you Owen?

Owen: 13.

Kirk: It says here that you play basketball.

Owen: Yeah, someday, I'd like to play for the NBA. Until then, I'll play school basketball. I'll even play in college when I'm older.

Kirk: Which team is your favorite?

Owen: Well I'm from New Orleans, so I'd be on the Pelicans.

Kirk: Nice choice. Now who are you?

Carissa: Carissa.

Kirk: And how old are you?

Carissa: 13.

Kirk: It says here that you like to dance.

Carissa: Well I'm part of my school dance ensemble and my friends think I'm the best dancer.

Kirk: I just now you are. Let's hear it for the Green Monkeys!

And on the Orange Iguanas we have:

Harrison: Harrison.

Kirk: How old are you Harrison?

Harrison: 12.

Kirk: It says here that you write stories.

Harrison: Yeah, my friends think they're kinda funny. I like to make people laugh.

Kirk: You can show me one of them later if you want.

Harrison: Actually, I didn't bring any.

Kirk: That's alright. Now who are you?

Edith: Edith Knight. I'm 14 years old.

Kirk: It says here that you also like to dance.

Edith: Yeah, I'm on my school dance team. We do kicks, splits, and jumps mostly. I remember my friend Sherri told me that she was also on this show.

Kirk: Was she in the Pied Piper episode?

Edith: You bet she was!

Kirk: Since you said your last name, what's Sherri's?

Edith: Velten.

Kirk: Tell her I said "hi".

Edith: Alright.

Kirk: Those are the Orange Iguanas. Let's hear it for 'em!

Why don't you girls get set up for the second temple game over there and guys get set up for the first one here. In the temple games, teams are competing to win Pendants of Life. The winning team will need those pendants to protect them from the dreaded temple guards as they make their way through the temple. There are three temple games, and Olmec will tell us about the first one.

Olmec: Houdini was an escape artist-no one knew how he got all those locks off him. For our escape artist wannabies, that answer is you. When Kirk gives the signal, grab a key from the pedestal, then run up to the column and insert the key into one of the escapee's locks. The first player to remove all five locks and free the escapee, or the player furthest along in 60 seconds wins!

Kirk: Let's put 60 seconds on the clock! On your mark, get set, GO!

Owen - 2
Harrison - 3 (Out of Time)

Kirk: Time's up! The Orange Iguanas got three while the Green Monkeys got two. That means that the Orange Iguanas get a half a pendant of life! The Green Monkeys can catch up in the next game; it's worth a half pendant. Olmec, tell us about it.

Olmec: The "Milk Can" escape act was replaced by Houdini's Chinese Water Torture Cell, where he would escape from a water tank. We WERE going to have you try that yourself, but our tanks have leaks. When Kirk gives the signal, place your stopper on the hole where you think the water will come out of. If you're right, nothing will happen, otherwise it will squirt you. Then you'll remove your stoppers, and try again. The player with the most correct predictions in 60 seconds wins!

Kirk: Let's put 60 seconds on the clock! On your mark, get set, make your choice! Squirt! ("Make your choice! Squirt!" repeatedly until time's up)

Carissa - 2
Edith - 3

Kirk: That's it! We got the Orange Iguanas with three and the Green Monkeys with two. That means that the Orange Iguanas get another half pendant of life! The Green Monkeys can tie in the next game. It's worth a full pendant. Olmec, tell us about it.

Olmec: Houdini survived being in the milk can for 90 seconds. You need to survive our Mechanical Horses for one minute. But hold on tight, because when Kirk gives the signal, the horse will begin to spin. The team that stays on the longest, OR the team with the most players left at the end of 60 seconds wins!

Kirk: Let's put 90–I mean 60 seconds on the clock! On your mark, get set, GO!

Green Monkeys - Both fell off
Orange Iguanas - Both stayed on (0:36 Remaining)

Kirk: That's it! Both Green Monkeys fell off while the Orange Iguanas stayed on. That means that the Orange Iguanas get a full pendant of life, giving them two; the Orange Iguanas are going to the temple!

Kirk: Welcome back! The Orange Iguanas have earned the right to enter Olmec's temple. But before they get started, Olmec's gonna give them some information to help them retrieve Harry Houdini's milk can.

Olmec: You could start by running up the stairs to the Crypt! Grab the book from the skeleton and pass into the Pit of Despair. Here, you must choose your next path. You could race up to the King's Storeroom, smash the clay pots and find the key that could take you down into Medusa's Lair. Place the snakes in Medusa's head and pass into the Room of the Ancient Warriors. Place yourself in the correct armor and open the door to the SHRIIIIIIINE of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Clockwork Room. Turn the gears to lift the weight, and you can climb down into the Dungeon where you could smash to the Dark Forest. But beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees. Find the key in the tree, and you'll enter the Bamboo Forest. If you escape, you could gain entry to the Throne Room. Sit upon the Throne of the Pretender, then race through the pit, CLIMB through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the temple gate. The choices are yours and yours alone. You won two pendants in the temple games. Who's going first?

Harrison: I am!

Olmec: Very well, Harrison. When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the temple and make your way towards the milk can. Hidden inside the temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your pendant for an extra life and go on. BUT if you're caught without a pendant, you will be taken out of the temple, and it'll be Edith's turn to enter and try her luck. If you can reach the milk can, all of the doors of the temple will instantly unlock and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the gates with the milk can in three minutes and you will both be handsomely rewarded and here's how:

(Olmec moans gutturally while the gate lowers)

Kirk: Get in position. Mouthpieces in. Put three minutes on the clock!

(Timer bangs down)

Kirk: On your mark, get set, GO!

(Temple run music starts and HUD moves in on screen)

Harrison heads up into the Crypt. He tries the camera-right skeleton which doesn't work, then the camera-left which opens the Pit of Despair (2:51). He jumps down into the pit and opens up the Throne Room (2:41). He sits on the throne and opens up the Bamboo Forest. He makes his way across the bamboo and encounters a temple guard (2:29)! He gives up his pendant and continues into the Dark Forest. Once he opens up the room, he runs through and busts through the stone wall into the Dungeon (2:16). He climbs up into the Clockwork Room and turns the key once, opening up the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (2:05). He puts the base on the pedestal and out comes another temple guard (2:00)! Edith follows Harrison's path up into the Crypt and across the bottom floor. Once she made it to the Dungeon, she decides to climb up into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. She opens up the Shrine (1:38), and continues putting the monkey together in eight seconds, opening up the Room of the Ancient Warriors. She picks up the milk can (1:25), runs up into the King's Storeroom, jumps across the pit without falling, runs up into the Crypt, and makes it out (1:04)!
