Title: Pokémon Topic

Considering what happened, this needs to remade.

Let's start with a scary remix of New Mauville.

And an update.

Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 Update March 15, 2012 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqLHAdpQBAo#ws)

I'm not sure I like the boxart. Maybe it will grow on me.
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on March 17, 2012, 03:54:02 AM
Which deserved to be in a different post because...? :P

I really like the box art myself, for both versions.  I'll probably still get Black 2 as I said before, but I think I prefer the White Kyurem forme.

I haven't been playing a whole lot recently, but I have been trying to streamline the rosters I use in both Platinum and White and form closer-knit teams.  I'm trying to concentrate on multiple weather-based teams in White, but I'm not sure if I should just hone my hall of fame roster (Machamp, Houndoom, Mamoswine, Tropius, Empoleon and Garchomp) in Platinum or come up with something else.

Fun little idea I had:

Pokemon meets Legends! Pick a team, and you can only use Pokemon of the specified Pokedex color and/or Body Style.

(Note: Orange's color group is Brown due to the lack of an orange group)

Pokemon by dex color: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pokémon_by_color (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pokémon_by_color)
Pokemon by body style: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pokémon_by_body_style (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pokémon_by_body_style)

(TAW EDIT: Fixed the URL's for more direct linking.  The latter didn't even have a redirect.)

That would be either the color or the body type for each Pokémon on a team, but they don't all have to be either the same color or the same body type, right? If that's the case, I might as well make one of each and then pick a favorite from that:

Red Jaguars: Darmanitan (two for one!), Jynx, Mamoswine, Houndoom, Scizor, Druddigon
Blue Barracudas: Garchomp, Eelektross (two for one!), Toxicroak, Dewgong (two for one!), Nidoqueen, Heracross
Green Monkeys: Garchomp, Bronzong, Tropius, Vigoroth, Gengar, Nidoqueen
Orange Iguanas: Mamoswine, Galvantula, Shiftry, Infernape, Drapion, Alakazam
Purple Parrots: Venomoth, Cloyster, Espeon, Arbok, Crobat, Archeops
Silver Snakes: Steelix (two for one!), Arbok, Machamp, Gyarados, Dragonair, Stoutland

...Huh, even then I'd pick the Barracudas team first. :o The Parrots or Monkeys team would probably be second.

Actually, when I said "two for one," I meant that it satisfied both the color group and the body type.  I didn't mean I was going to put two of that Pokémon on the team. ;)

TSM did clarify that the Pokémon on one team did not have to all satisfy BOTH the color and the body type; just one or the other would do.

But yeah, I see what you mean.  Abilities are one of the only genetic values I'm picky about when I'm searching for a wild Pokémon.  I usually draw the line at anything more specific like natures, IV's or whether or not it's shiny (that one's only if I get lucky while doing something else like level grinding), but I do the ability really makes a difference for some Pokémon like Bronzong.  I specifially went for a levitating one in Diamond because that makes its only weakness to Fire, one of the rarest types in the game.

I was thinking about starting a new game in the Temple Games board called "Name That Pokemon". It will be similar to "Name That Episode" where there are three clues, except this game involves naming a certain Pokemon. Is anyone interested in playing this? :?:

Edit: I know we have "Pokemon Unscramble", but that's different and it seems to have worn out its welcome. I think it's time for a new Pokemon game in the Temple Games board. Again, anyone interested?

Particularly access to Dark-type moves for Sabrina, since the type didn't exist in Generation I.
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Viper on March 27, 2012, 07:38:38 PM
Even with out Dark type, they were still weak. I OHKO'd Blaine's Arcanine with  my Nidoqueen (who has been recently been replaced with Venomoth). And Koga gave me trouble because I had all level 33's. I did Silph Co. and came back to him and he was too easy. Sabrina was also easy to beat. I used surf on her and it was a breeze. And Giovanni was the easiest. Probably because of Venomoth's Giga Drain.
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on March 27, 2012, 09:32:40 PM
I'm thinking the Special stat split had something to do with how easy Sabrina became to beat.  All four of her Pokémon ended up with Generation I's Special stat becoming their Special Attack in Generation II.  And out of the four, only Mr. Mime got a higher Special Defense than Attack after the split; Kadabra and Alakazam in particular had average Special Defenses to balance out their very high Special Attacks.

Have you tried using names whose meaning relates to the type or character? Etymology makes the character more interesting. Like Felicity. It means quality of expressions. I used it for my fanfic champion name because she has different types. It also means joyful because Felicity always sees the good in situations.

I did that for some of them. Charlie comes from the latin name for steel, chalybs, Melinda means dark, Ariana sounds like arachnid, and Jack and rock are both four letter words that end in ck. The rest I just chose names of people I knew.

Does anyone have any strategies for beating the Pokemon League in HG/SS? I'm using Heracross, Skarmory, Mismagius, and Octillery. Heracross and Skamory end up dead during the battle with Will, and Octillery sometimes makes it past Koga. Mismagius and Octillery (if he survived) and up dead on Bruno's Hitmonchan.

Post by: Red Jaguars Fan on April 09, 2012, 01:32:25 PM
I really hate the concept of experience groups. Pokemon you really love will fall behind because they need more experience to level up than others.

Case in point:
Gyarados (Oy, training Magikarp... )
Gardevoir/Gallade
Aggron
Starmie (Of all things, Nintendo, you have to put Starmie in the Slow Group)
Houndoom
Arcanine
Every pseudo-legendary
Almost all legendaries (Event ones except Gen 5 one are lucky)

And then there's the Fluctuating Group.

Examples:
Hariyama
Breloom
Drifblim

If anyone wants details of the groups, go to the link below.

Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on April 09, 2012, 04:07:16 PM
The way I play, experience groups never really affect me that much.  I just rotate Pokémon when one of mine levels up, so that none of them really do fall behind.

...But actually looking up those experience groups, now I see why I felt like I was underleveled in Gold and Silver.  Umbreon and Alakazam are the only Pokémon on my Silver that aren't in the Slow group (yes, I actually rotated Typhlosion out to make room for Houndoom), although I may replace Skarmory with Scizor once Dragonair evolves and I can replace its Waterfall with Fly.

My Gold team levels up quite a bit faster in comparison: three Medium Slows (Meganium, Poliwrath and Nidoqueen), two Medium Fasts (Jynx and Steelix) and only Dragonite as a Slow.  I'm at the same point in both games, but just about everyone is 1½ levels higher in Gold.

But really, that's just something I never really stop to think about.  It really only comes up when I'm rotating a new Pokémon into the roster and it needs to level up a lot to evolve, as with Tynamo or Larvesta in White.  Other than that, I don't really take it into account and just level-grind as I normally would.

I'm in the first round. I can beat Will using my Skarmory, Octillery, and Heracross, because I depend on Mismagius way too much. I don't have 2 other pokemon on my team. The last 2 are HM slaves.
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on April 10, 2012, 05:27:38 AM
Oh, crap...  Yeah, I planned around that from the start on Gold and Silver. Most of my team's HM's were evenly distributed, or if I had an HM slave, I'd keep it in the PC and train something else as part of the main party.  The first thing I'd do is probably go to a move deleter and have those HM slaves turned into real fighters, while leaving different Pokémon in the PC to act as HM slaves instead.

Remember what I said about taking a little more time and combining your thoughts into fewer posts in non-spam topics, RJF? Just edit the first post if you have a closely-related afterthought.

I don't even know where the idea that this is the end came from.  I'm really surprised by how much is changing with these games compared to the first two, but then again, seeing as it is a timeskip, and we've seen how Kanto can change over the frame of three years...

I'll admit these changes are much more drastic than I was expecting, especially with the massive expansion to the Unovadex.  Hell, I know they did something similar in Sinnoh, but it was only 59 extras, where this sounds like a lot more.  But in a way, it makes up for the extremely bizarre shifts into the post-game in Black 1 and White 1.  And yay for a new Poison-type Gym Leader; now the only thing missing is a Dark-type Gym. :)

So far I think my only real complaint is how dorky the main characters look, but eh, I suppose that's not a major issue.  Can't wait for my birthday, since this is going on my wish list!

EDIT: I'm wondering how the anime will deal with the Dexpansion, come to think of it.  So far, no old Pokémon have been seen in Unova aside from Ash's Pikachu and Team Rocket's Meowth.  No telling if the new availability of old Pokémon will change all that... Maybe Unova will be treated as a dual region, and the east part will correspond to the expansion?
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic

What old Pokemon were in the east?
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on April 12, 2012, 11:37:39 AM
A crapton.  I'm talking about the area that included Lacunosa Town, Undella Town and White Forest or Black City.  The entire postgame section, which was walled off until after you beat Team Plasma.
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: Red Jaguars Fan on April 13, 2012, 11:32:31 AM
Most of the North and East of Unova is frozen over, and the town you start in is southwest of the whole region. It's not indicated by CoroCoro in the scan. In fact, the whole region is gonna change a bit.

The northern and eastern parts of Unova are obscured by this ice, and Opelucid City is just on the border of being covered.
There are two new towns and at least one new route to the southwest.
The road between Castelia City and Nimbasa City is complete.
A new building has been added to the front of Nimbasa City, and a new area to the east of the Rondez-View Ferris Wheel.
Driftveil City's lighthouse is gone, and several craters have appeared in the city.
There is now a settlement on Route 4
Liberty Garden is now shown in the official artwork of the map, and appears to have been revamped.
The construction zone and Cold Storage south of Driftveil are both gone.
There is a section taken out of the side of the mountain in eastern Unova, and there are several buildings here.
Challenger's Cave has disappeared.
The webbing that initially blocks the entrance to Chargestone Cave is gone.
The Entralink's moat is now dry, and the inner area has changed.

Even though most of the region is frozen, all the main cities from the BW main storyline are still intact. Maybe the two gym leaders are additions and they're really breaking away from tradition.
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on April 13, 2012, 11:53:00 AM
I'd never even stopped to consider that, but maybe there will be more gyms this time. :o I wasn't really sure, because one of the two new ones is a Water-type specialist, and I'd kind of equated Cress to one even though his only Water-type is Panpour.

I'm kind of wondering what will happen to the characters from the original games that will be replaced.  Maybe Bianca will be a professor's assistant? Maybe one of the Gym Leaders has been promoted to the Elite Four, or either Hilbert or Hilda is now the Champion? That's definitely something I'm looking forward to finding out.

I'm gonna compile a list of Pokemon from the East of Unova. Some have been mentioned earlier; here are the others. This list will exclude trades, giveaways, swarms and fishing. No White Forest, too.

Gligar line
Zangoose
Seviper
Buizel line
Bidoof line (Oh, the HM glory)
Caterpie line
Weedle line
Ponyta line
Pinsir
Sunkern line
Dunsparce
Heracross
Combee line
Cherubi line
Zubat line (Oh, the caves!)
Tangela line
Taillow line
Lunatone
Solrock
Absol
Drifloon line
Staryu line
Wingull line
Corsola
Swinub line
Delibird
Jynx line
Seel line
Clefairy line
Ditto
Wailmer line
Spheal line
Jigglypuff line
Swablu line
Shuckle
Tropius
Vulpix line
Hoothoot line
Murkrow line
Misdreavus line
Stantler
Chimecho line
Bronzor line
Spearow line
Cubone line

And yes, I found that the Pokemon listed before this post, except for Mareep, Buneary and Growlithe, were in the East. According to this list, it's 83. Plus the Riolu line, Larvitar line, Beldum line, Lapras, Mareep line, Growlithe line, Eevee line, Buneary line, Psyduck line, Mantine line and Sneasel line, that's 111. So far, it's 268.

If I were to include fishing:
Goldeen line
Carvahna line
Remoraid line
Shellder line
Luvdisc

268 + 9 = 277

That's the most I have, but it looks more or less what B2W2 will have.

It's been confirmed that Absol will be coming back. Also, there are a lot of new areas, even one with lilypads and another with a catwalk aisle.

Okay, the last one was exaggerated but there is a place where you can step onto lilypads (How fitting for this forum). There's also a Pokemon concert stage.

And more news... All characters will have animated sprites, including ordinary trainers.

Other new stuff include a sort of movie theater and an underwater passage which you walk on. No diving needed.

Umbreon

Jolteon
Vaporeon
Leafeon
Flareon

I admit it, I've probably become a lot more strategic over time.  If I were just going off of the designs, Flareon would be much higher.  But seriously, why didn't they just give it Flare Blitz or something?

Pokémon Rival Destinies Episode 1 Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vccRoBoHlFM#ws)

Also, was anyone expecting Bianca to be that tall?
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: Red Jaguars Fan on April 30, 2012, 11:38:55 AM
If anyone's interested in the anime (spoilers!), here's what Ash has now aside from Pikachu.

Unfezant (Wow! From Pidove to this?)
Oshawott
Tepig (That Pignite was Bianca's, PP319)
Snivy (Servine's from Trip, which btw is a stupid name for a photographer)
Scraggy (from an egg)
Leavanny (That was quick! It was such a cute Sewaddle.)
Palpitoad
Boldore (From Roggenrola)
Krokorok (Appeared in episode 3 as Sandile, caught many episodes later as this. I loved it from the very beginning of the anime, though)

I'm not sure who's in his roster as of the current episode since he changes a lot.

Well, I think Bianca is supposed to be older than the rest of the cast in the anime.  With an overprotective dad like hers, she might not have left on the journey at age 10, but a few years later.

And I disagree about the voice actors, honestly.  I think a lot of the newer voices have fit pretty well after the actors grew into their roles during Season 9 (especially Ash, since I refuse to accept that he hasn't aged a year and thus should sound older now :P)... although some like Michele Knotz took a little longer to grow on me than the others, but I was happy enough with her portrayal of Jessie part of the way through Diamond and Pearl.

They may be an acquired taste, but I'm definitely of the mind that the anime is more watchable now than ever, and the dub voices are part of it.  I've never been the type to consider any change inherently bad, really.  Plus, I have no idea who I'd rather hear voice some of these characters... Sarah Natochenny as Ash is fine by me. :)

EDIT: Also, regarding the Tepigs in the anime, just to clear things up.  Bianca's Pignite will have evolved into Emboar prior to Black and White: Rival Destinies Episode 23, which has only aired in Japan so far (as of this post, we're up to Episode 11 of the season in the US) and starts a few-episode tournament.  But Ash's Tepig might or might not evolve in Episode 29, which airs in Japan this Thursday.  I think there was speculation about it because of one of the opening or ending sequences, and Bulbapedia's page for it has been locked for quite a while as a result.  But this Thursday's episode is very likely to confirm it one way or the other.

Staryu requires the Super Rod which is near Lavender after Snorlax.
Rhyhorn is in the Safari Zone in Fuschia.

Hehe... This gym is full of women!

Oh, how did that slide past the radar?
I guess things were more relaxed in 1998, but wasn't it changed to "strong trainers" later?

Anywho, working on three separate weather-based teams for White at the moment.  Current progress:

Sunny Day: Drought!Ninetales, Volcarona, Hydreigon with Fire Blast, Chlorophyll!Leafeon (in progress), two unknowns
Rain Dance: Eelektross with Rain Dance, Samurott, Nidoqueen with Surf, Dragonite with Thunder (possibly), Tornadus (possibly), Swanna (in progress), Dry Skin!Toxicroak (not yet caught)
Hail: Ice Body!Walrein, Cloyster, Cryogonal, Lapras (not yet caught), Froslass (not yet caught), Abomasnow (most likely, but not yet caught)

The Hail team could use a little more fine-tuning, now that I think about it, since there isn't a single out-of-type with high endurance on the roster so far.  I'm also trying to design a Hail team and a Trick Room team in Platinum... more on that later, but I may be able to grab ideas from that.

Caught two Tropiuses (Tropii? Not sure which sounds better ) for my Sunny Day team in White, but not sure which one to use.  One has Solar Power, the other has Chlorophyll and a Speed-boosting nature by pure luck.  I'm just not sure which would help more; I'm leaning towards Solar Power because Tropius has a ton of HP and a decent Special Attack, although it gives less of a boost then Chlorophyll does to Speed... it's just that Tropius's Speed might not be all that good even after the doubling.  Thoughts?

Muk, Zangoose and Seviper are confirmed now. (Who's bright idea was it to put the latter two together?)
Who are those new villains?
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on May 19, 2012, 11:38:14 AM
The Zangoose/Seviper thing could be worse.  They can breed together, after all.

Team Plasma becoming more like pirates was kind of surprising, really.  That other professor being a villain wouldn't surprise me as much (although I was surprised that the idea would actually show up in the games— one of my friends had only come up with it for fanfiction), but if he is, I'm hoping the English translation will try to be a little more clever with his name... the "aku" in his Japanese name, Akuroma, could be interpreted as meaning "evil." As for those three villains at the end with the Bisharp, I'm assuming they're the Shadow Triad from the first Black and White.

It looks like Bianca and Cheren found their true callings, but I actually wasn't expecting Cheren to become the Nacrene Gym Leader.  Lenora will probably still be running the museum in the sequel, though.

As for N... Well, I'm glad he's back, but I can't begin to guess what role he'll play in the plot this time.  The obvious answer seems to be some kind of ally from the sidelines, but we'll see...

Well, I haven't done much with Generation III in a long time, so I ended up starting a new game on my Ruby version and decided to do a Nuzlocke challenge.  For those of you who haven't heard of it, it's a self-imposed challenge with just two ground rules:

1. You can only capture the first Pokémon you encounter in each new area, and nothing else.  If it runs away or faints in battle, you're SOL.
2. If one of your Pokémon faints in battle, it is considered dead and either has to be released, migrated or permanently boxed— whichever you decide, it can never be used again.

Other than those two ground rules, there's a lot of other restrictions that can be made or lifted to adjust the difficulty.  My main ones are that I'll adjust Rule 1 to avoid duplicates of the same species and that in trainer battles, I'd only ever use one item (unless the opponent uses more) and the same number of Pokémon as the opponent.

Right now I've just started in Petalburg Woods, with a roster of Torchic, Silcoon, Poochyena, Zigzagoon and Cascoon, and nobody's died yet.  Not sure if I'll end up making a story or comic out of this, but I'll try to keep you guys posted as I progress.  Wish me luck! :P

The Weather Brothers' new formes will have different abilities.
Black City and White Forest are back (They better not have Grey)
There is a cave that is different between both versions. Black 2 will have water, White 2 will have lava
B2 gets Black Kyurem, W2 gets White Kyurem (If it wasn't obvious from the backgrounds in trailers)
Buneary and Magby exclusive to B2 while Skitty (Why?????) and Elekid to W2.

Gym leader update!

All eight have been confirmed. The order for the first two is confirmed, but not for the rest.

Cheren
Homika
Drayden (No Iris)
Clay
Elesa with a new look
Skyla (Told you she owned the fans of doom :P)
Burgh
Shizui

No confirmation as to whether the others will appear in the games.

They've had a gym leader and an elite four member specializing in the same type in the same game before. Sabrina/Will, Janine/Koga, and Chuck/Bruno in G/S/C/HG/SS, and Juan/Wallace in Emerald.

More news from Bulbanews:

It has been confirmed that Cheren is the Gym Leader of Aspertia City's Gym, officially known as Aspertia Gym, and gives out TM83 (Work Up) to the players who defeat him.
Bianca gives away TM27 (Return) and the C-Gear in Aspertia City, after the player defeats Cheren, the Aspertia Gym's Gym Leader. She also teaches the player how to catch a Pokémon on Route 19.
The Pokédex gets an upgrade on Route 20. This upgrade allows players to look up specific routes and other locations to see which wild Pokémon can appear there.
Homika uses a level 16 Koffing and a Level 18 Whirlipede, gives away TM09 (Venom Shock).
You receive a Medal Box, medals, and 6 hint medals from an old man. The medal guy rewards you for having watched TV and looking through a trash can. The magazine shows a screenshot of the player receiving the Couch Potato medal.
Team Plasma has split into two factions. One of the factions' goal is to steal Pokémon and using them to take over the world.
Akuroma has studied Team Plasma, and even knows some of its members.
The rival hates Team Plasma because they stole the Purrloin his sister gave him when they were younger.
The player starts the game with P100.
The Balloon Smash minigame is be played through the Xtransceiver.
Pressing the L button during battle brings up a hint screen showing which attacks will be effective.
New Pokédex numbers confirmed: #010 Patrat, #011 Watchog, #012 Purrloin, #013 Liepard, #014 Pidove, #015 Tranquill, #016 Unfezant, #017 Sewaddle, #018 Swadloon, #019 Leavanny, #020 Sunkern, #021 Sunflora, #022 Lillipup, #023 Herdier and #024 Stoutland.

- So once again, we live in the same place as Cheren.
- Route 19?
- Cool
- Well, we know she's second. What about that other guy?
- I'm not interested.
- So, did Team Rocket influence this faction? :P
- He has revealed his allegiance!
- Well, I know I'll like this guy.
- NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
- Do I care?
- This sounds familiar ;)
- Did they have to rearrange it that much?

Sounds like the rival is definitely an older character if he already had a Pokémon (unless that one was a pet, in which case I misunderstood).  I think it'd only be logical if they aged up the main characters a little further, and also upped the required age for a trainer.

Interesting that TM27 is once again given almost immediately.  I really do like what they've done with Cheren and Bianca for the sequels, but I have to admit it seems weird to have the first gym in the first place on the map.  Unless you do get a lot more time to train and come back to it later...

Still no idea on why Homika (or whatever she'll be renamed in the translation— my guess is Verena) will be? I think the anime has the group traveling to another new city not in B1W1.

I guess I should've seen Team Plasma's split into two coming. Admittedly, it's a bit more interesting than two teams of nonsensical fanatics warring in Hoenn.

Of all the changes in the new games, reducing the starting money down to 100 could be one of the nastiest unless there's a lot of early items and easy battles planned to get us set for the gym.  I don't mind the Pokédex change all that much, honestly, as long as it makes sense based on where the Pokémon show up in the game— who'd really memorized the entire B1W1 Unovadex front to back, anyway?

I'm still suspecting a change to the Elite Four as well.  I guess if there is one, they want to keep that part under wraps... I suppose we'll find out soon enough, though!

So, making more progress on the Nuzlocke, but I've hit a sort of stopping point simply because I don't actually know what to do about a certain situation.  All the Pokémon that are alive right now:

Combusken, female, Level 17
Beautifly, female, Level 17
Poochyena, female, Level 12
Zigzagoon, male, Level 18
Dustox, male, Level 17
Ninjask, male, Level 20
Shedinja, Level 20
Whismur, male, Level 5
Zubat, female, Level 17

My question has to do with the Shedinja, and I can't seem to find too many answers for it.  Whether Shedinja can be used is a bit of a sticking point in and of itself, simply because you are only allowed the first Pokémon you catch on each route, and no others.  But is Shedinja a legitimate capture on its own on the route it evolves on, an accidental second capture on the route Nincada was captured on or is it a by-product of evolution and therefore an exception to the system?

Most questions and answers I've found focused on whether or not it could be used.  My real question is if using Shedinja would take the place of an actual capture on Route 110, where Nincada evolved.  Thoughts?

Pokemon fans, some people have received their copies and are now posting new info.

You have to participate in Pokewood after defeating Homika
You can use X-Transceiver now.
HP/EXP area in both versions are the same as the title color.
Burgh has a Swadloon, a Dwebble and a Leavanny
Gym leaders may not be in their gyms the first time.
Elesa has Emolga, Flaaffy and Zebstrika
Clay has Krokorok, Sandslash and Excadrill
Budew, Roselia, Baltoy, Nosepass (I told you!), Cleffa, Combee, Castform, Rattata (NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!), Grimer and Zubat (Oh, the caves!) are available.
Skyla will have Swoobat, Skarmory (Yes!) and Swanna)
You'll get to set the difficulty of the game after completing it. Normal, Assist or Challenge.
Volcarano is obtainable at Level 35, which is a seriously low level considering when Larvesta evolves.
Drayden has Druddigon, Flygon (YES!) and Haxorus
Unova is indeed frozen in the east.
The Shadow Triad can be battled.
Shizui is last and will have Carracosta, Wailord and Jellicent. Warning: his Jellicent is Lv 51.
Achroma is the leader of Team Plasma (Ha!) He has Magnezone (Told you!), Metang, Beeheeyem and Klinklang
Ghetsis is back, and his team is pathetic. He has Cofagrigus, Drapion, Toxicroak, Seismitoad and Hydreigon. All are 2 levels lower. What a hacker!
The Elite Four is the same, and the Champion is..... IRIS?!?!?!?!?!?
Iris will have Hydreigon, Druddigon, Aggron, Archeops, Lapras, and Haxorus. Be warned, level 57 to 59.

You can receive a Zorua owned by N. It's #151, which is in the middle. You can also receive his Sigilyph.
Latias and Latios are in the game. Possibly version exclusive.
Homika is now Roxie. I'll address her as that from now on.

Well, the main character can become the Champ at age 10, and the Champ in Red/Blue was 10.  I think it only stands to reason that Iris could become the Champ as well, no?

Did you find out what happened to Alder, or any of the older Gym Leaders? And is the rest of the Elite Four the same?

Agreed.  I can't wait for it to be revealed, though, since it's probably my favorite legendary in Generation V (except maybe for Kyurem, but then again I really love Ice-types).

As for the rest of the new additions to the Unovadex, I don't really mind that there is some vendor trash, so to speak, in the middle of some awesome additions.  First, because it keeps things from looking too imbalanced compared to other regional Pokédexes.  And second, because there's a really good range there.  Keep in mind that the Unovadex increased from 156 to 301, which means nearly 30% of the Pokémon from past generations were added in.

All I can say is that if and when Generation VI rolls around, I really hope they stop having to expand the regional Pokédexes in later games of the same generation and simply start out with the full Dex for the first pair.  It made Diamond and Pearl feel very stripped-back, for one; Black and White did a little better with it because it had the "fresh start" feel, but I don't really see why they'd need to hold back from Pokédexes that hover around 250~320 anymore.

...Not to say that I suddenly want there to be 1000 Pokémon in three years, either.  A handful of well-honed new ones and a very well-balanced mix of old ones will do.

Gen 5.1:
Emboar
Simisage
Carracosta
Krookodile
Reuniclus
Haxorus

Gen 5.2:
Samurott
Lucario (And you can get Riolu before the first gym! :D)
Umbreon
Crustle
Braviary
Flygon

I'm still processing, so this will change a lot in the future. But I'm pretty sure about Samurott, Lucario, Braviary and Flygon.

Post by: The Ancient Warrior on June 30, 2012, 12:41:34 AM
Shh, the main demographic isn't supposed to be smart enough to notice that. :P

As far as rarity of certain species is concerned, I don't know if it's so much the strength as it is trying to be fairly consistent with previous games.  Remember this is the first time that Riolu and Eevee appear in the wild rather than only one given out in a game, so I would expect it to take a lot of luck or a lot of tedious searching to get one or even more than one of them.

I'm still wondering about the last few remaining name changes for the English version (the remaining towns, that is, including the one where Marlon's gym is located).  I don't know enough about cloud species to even venture a guess in this case, where I might have guessed on a Gym Leader's localized name.

I can't even remember some of my Hall of Fame teams offhand.  I'll try, though:

Gold: Meganium, Feraligatr (since replaced with Poliwrath), Steelix, Jynx, Nidoqueen, Dragonair (now Dragonite)
Silver: Typhlosion (since replaced with Houndoom), Cloyster, Umbreon, Alakazam, Skarmory (since replaced with Lapras), Dragonair (now Dragonite)
Diamond: Infernape, Heracross, Honchkrow, Gyarados, Steelix, Garchomp (mostly at Level 55 when they first beat the Elite Four on the first try)
Platinum: Empoleon, Machoke (thankfully now Machamp), Tropius, Mamoswine, Houndoom, Garchomp (mostly at Level 58 when they first beat the Elite Four... I still have no idea why it took so many more tries!)
White: Samurott, Eelektross, Cryogonal, Sigilyph, Archeops, Zekrom (more or less descending from Level 56 to 51 in that order... they're definitely much higher now!)

Of course, keep in mind I'm usually rotating much more than six Pokémon per game from Generation IV on.  It'll probably be that way in Black 2 and White 2, with (if my Platinum experience has taught me anything ) the Hall of Fame mostly being dependent on which six I decide will be the best choices to counter Iris's team.

So, latest news from Bulbapedia is that an early airing of the fifteenth movie apparently came with a teaser for the sixteenth, hinting at Genesect's existence.  I can't wait until Nintendo officially reveals Genesect, since it's probably my favorite legendary from Generation V (except maybe Kyurem :P).

As for my Ruby Nuzlocke, I now have three badges but four losses (just a momentary lapse of memory was all it really took for me to forget about Voltorb's Rollout and lose Shedinja, go figure).  I expected to catch a Numel on Route 112, but I was really hoping for a Koffing in the Fiery Path rather than a Torkoal (my starter was Torchic, so I don't have any need for another Fire-type just yet).  Looks like I'm sticking to my current roster (Combusken, Linoone, Loudred, Ninjask, Electrike and Golbat) for a bit longer, anyway... I'll have to see what the routes near Fallarbor Town give me.

Well, I think I already have my half of the Trick Room tag team I'm going to build with a friend in Black 2: Bronzong, Druddigon, Cofagrigus, Eelektross, Lapras and Steelix for me.  Really lucky that this is without having to go outside the expanded Unovadex, too.  What team I'll be using for the main game, I'm not sure of yet... I'll probably start building up the Trick Room team as I go, but otherwise, all I know is I'm starting with Tepig this time.

Updates to the Nuzlocke? I skipped the capture on Route 113, which would've been a Spinda, but caught a Swablu on Route 114 and a Solrock in Meteor Falls.  I stopped Team Magma and got the Meteorite, but sadly, I lost my recently-evolved Manectric in that battle, making it five losses now. :( My current team on hand is Combusken, Crobat, Loudred, Linoone, Swablu and Torkoal, and it looks like I'll be fighting fire with fire at the Lavaridge Gym.

I haven't followed the anime too much, but from what I've been reading on other sites, Iris is going to catch a Dragonite, a Generation 1 Pokemon. This is Gen. 5. Why are they putting a Gen. 1 Pokemon in there? I know Ash has Pikachu, but at least that Pokemon has a reason for being there. That has been the mascot since day one. I know Dragonite's another big name Gen. 1 Poke, but I don't get why it's in the Gen. 5 anime. I understand that's a dragon-type Poke and Iris specializes in dragon-types, but she could at least find another Gen. 5 dragon or at least give Axew more training. This is confusing to me. :?
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic

That's probably exactly what it is, after Black and White stuck to only new Pokémon to allude to Unova's distance from the previous regions.

Actually, even though Dragonite still isn't in the expanded Unova Pokédex, the anime in Generations III and IV also featured Pokémon not native to Hoenn or Sinnoh on a regular basis.  This usually didn't include the main characters' rosters (although May did end up with a Bulbasaur while still in Hoenn), but their rivals often had non-native captures in their teams (Barry, for example, used a Hitmonlee in the Lily-of-the-Valley Conference).

Well, just got the Heat Badge from Flannery without a hitch, and currently level-grinding in the desert.  I caught a Trapinch and gave it the Exp Share, but this was only after my Loudred got killed. :( It was when I least expected it, but the Ruin Maniac on Route 111 has a pretty tough Sandslash.  I couldn't land a hit on it thanks to its ability Sand Veil, and it wore me down with poison to add to the sandstorm damage and a couple powerful Dig attacks (if I had a Full Restore still, I could've fought back, but my restrictions to the challenge did me in since I couldn't switch out or heal twice in the battle).  If I face him again some time soon, my Crobat might be the only thing that stands a chance.

Well, up to six badges now in the Nuzlocke.  The team's impressively overleveled, but Winona still gave me trouble (it was mostly Swellow wearing everyone down with Double Team and Endeavor and Altaria nearly finishing them off, and remember I can only use the same number of items in battle as my opponent).  Still, no losses since my Loudred died in that battle in the desert, so I'm definitely making up for some hardships earlier in the game.

Current team:
Blaziken, Level 39 female, starter
Linoone, Level 38 male, met on Route 102
Crobat, Level 38 female, met in Granite Cave
Torkoal, Level 38 male, met in the Fiery Path
Altaria, Level 38 female, met on Route 114
Vibrava, Level 39 male, met on Route 111

Not sure who to use for the two other Water-type HM's, but I'm hoping for a Wailord and a Walrein.

Progress on my Sapphire:

I'm at Fortree City already. But I'm contemplating holding off fighting Winona for now. I want to catch my last member of the team. So far, I've got......

Combusken Lv 31
Loudred Lv 33
Gloom Lv 33
Manectric Lv 29
Skarmory Lv 29

I'm so far into Hoenn and I still don't have a Water Type. And I need to travel all the way to Shoal Cave to get a Spheal to complete the team. Pathetic. :|

Edit: You know what, I'll hold off Spheal. It's too much of a hassle.
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic

Finally completed my team. But not fully evolved.

Blaziken - Lv 36
Loudred - Lv 38
Gloom - Lv 37
Manectric - Lv 32
Skarmory - Lv 33
Sealeo - Lv 38

The only reason why Manectric and Skarmory are underleveled is because I wanted to train the unevolved ones mid-game. Look at where that got me.

Unofrtunate, I lost to Liza and Tate. Need grinding.

Post by: The Ancient Warrior on August 27, 2012, 08:05:30 PM
Damn, I can't believe how fast you've been playing through the thing. I haven't played that fast in a long time (well except for when I got White for Christmas, but the path was a lot more linear so it probably wasn't as quick).

As for me, I just got the Mind Badge in my Ruby Nuzlocke.  I figured it'd be an easy gym battle and it was (but mostly because no real attacks came up... Lunatone kept trying Hypnosis but it failed every time), but I still did a bit of level-grinding to match Tate and Liza's team at Level 42 just to be sure.  Still no new losses, with the last one being all the way back in the desert.

I'm also rotating the team a lot more, because I wanted to incorporate all the HM uses into the team itself rather than cripple my team with an HM slave if somebody else should end up dying on me.  I got a few catches I wanted, but missed out on a Sharpedo on Route 125 (to be fair, I should have another chance later), so in rotation right now:

Blaziken, Level 42 female, starter
Linoone, Level 42 male, met on Route 102
Crobat, Level 42 female, met in Granite Cave
Torkoal, Level 42 male, met in the Fiery Path
Altaria, Level 42 female, met on Route 114
Vibrava, Level 42 male, met on Route 111

Roselia, Level 42 female, met on Route 117
Wailord, Level 42 female, met on Route 122
Sealeo, Level 32 male, met in Shoal Cave

Got a little exploring to do now that Wailord knows Dive.  Not sure how much explorationg I want to do before Sootopolis, though.  I haven't decided if I'm going to wait until after I have all eight badges to surf out to Pacifidlog, but I suppose it depends on how much training just casually exploring more of the sea will let me get in.  I'll probably want to get everyone up to Level 44 or 45 before the Sootopolis Gym, or probably before the battle with Groudon.

Defeated him, but only because of critical hits. Even then, the defences of all those Pokemon were so brutal. It took me six hits to get Cradily in the red, and that's before the Ancientpower benefit.

See my predicament here.

I need a Lapras and a Snorlax. So far, I have Charmeleon, Weepinbell, Primeape and Eevee. The whole process of getting there is just so tedious. I had to leave trainers out because of Lapras's level when you first get it. I mean, 25 when there are trainers with almost Lv 40s?

- Rocket Game Corner
- Lavender Tower
- Snorlax
- Silph Co and purposely leaving out a few trainers.
- Blue/Green/Gary
- Lapras
- Do hard core training just for those two especially since they need more experience points.

- Fight Giovanni

Oh dear.

Well, normally I have equally-raised placeholder Pokémon until I can complete the team I want, but that's just me.  I think it's impractical to run through most of the game without a complete team. ^^;

My Black 2 team, for example, can be built up gradually as I complete the main game.  It's going to serve as my Trick Room team in the postgame, made up of Bronzong, Steelix, Druddigon, Cofagrigus, Eelektross and Lapras.  The earliest I can get Druddigon is in Victory Road and Lapras doesn't appear until the Village Bridge (between the seventh and eighth gym towns), but I'd have six members on the team at any given point because it could still give me extra coverage compared to running most of the game with only three... not to mention my starter isn't even going to be on the team by the end, so replacements are necessary.
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on September 09, 2012, 08:53:49 AM
Starting to wrap up the Nuzlocke of Ruby at this point.  I just defeated Wallace and got the final badge, which is awesome.  Along the way, I ended up rushing through Maxie's team without a problem (he killed my Manectric the last time we battled, so I was a bit worried) and Groudon was... anticlimactic.  It only took four hits, using my Walrein and Altaria.  Wallace, on the other hand, gave me much more of the challenge that I'd been thirsting for, but in doing so, he also ended up killing my Roselia.  But after the battles that should've been difficult or tense being too easy, I welcomed that kind of challenge.

Current lineup in rotation:

Blaziken, Level 44 female, starter
Linoone, Level 44 male, met on Route 102
Crobat, Level 44 female, met in Granite Cave
Torkoal, Level 44 male, met in the Fiery Path
Wailord, Level 44 female, met on Route 122
Walrein, Level 45 male, met in Shoal Cave

Altaria, Level 44 female, met on Route 114
Flygon, Level 45 male, met on Route 111

I'm now up to seven losses, but with all eight badges and a good chunk of the game left to explore, I should be able to level up at a natural pace and be set to take on the Elite Four soon enough.  Then once this is done, it's time to get started on my second Nuzlocke in Platinum...
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on September 21, 2012, 04:11:38 PM
Decided to start in on the Platinum Nuzlocke a little early.  I did a lot more grinding and exploration in the remainder of Ruby, so all that's left is to go through is Victory Road and the last bit of level-grinding before I'm confident enough to take on the Elite Four.  No new losses since the last post, but the team now ranges around Level 49 or 50.

Started in on Platinum, and I'm up to one badge and one loss so far.  Damn Cranidos, taking out the Pokémon I'd designated to take you out...

Current lineup in Platinum:
Monferno, Level 15 male, starter
Kricketune, Level 11 male, met on Route 202
Magikarp, Level 13 female, met on Route 218
Bidoof, Level 11 male, met on Route 204
Geodude, Level 15 female, met at the Oreburgh Gate
Onix, Level 10 female, met in the Oreburgh Mine

Dead in Platinum:
Shinx, Level 13 female, met on Route 203

Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on October 03, 2012, 02:24:07 PM
Like I said, you should probably just consider getting a full team with backup members to help you get through the game, just in case you hit a tough spot because you don't have enough Pokémon to take out some of the trainers or something.  As the enemy AI in the games improves with every game, it's worth taking more precautions to avoid getting stuck.

Also, just a quick reminder to anybody else who wants one of the new games that only Black 2 has Challenge Mode available after defeating the Elite Four. White 2 gets Assist Mode, making everything easier rather than harder... which has to be THE dumbest decision GameFreak has made in quite a while.  Seriously, why did anybody on the dev team think that was a good idea?

The main characters are called 'Nate' and 'Rosa', so I've heard. And Alder's grandson will be 'Benga', which I really don't get.

Also, how the heck are they gonna change Roxie's theme? There can only be 6 letters in the chant. Koffing cannot fit.
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on October 05, 2012, 05:38:39 PM
Come up with "Koffin' " as a slang term?

No idea about "Benga," either.  According to Bulbapedia, it's a rare plant reference in the English version, referring to some kind of tree.  I'm not really sure how I would've translated his name either, though, and otherwise, I'm happy with most of the other B2W2 character names.  I would never have come up with Roxie or Marlon, for example, but both fit so well, and those names also look a lot better than those of most carryover characters from B1W1.

EDIT: Also, finally got to defeat Gardenia in the Platinum Nuzlocke.  With school and such, my progress has obviously slowed down, but I finally got around to defeating her.  It was a tough match because of just how strong that Roserade is at this point in the game, so I ended up having to use up my second and final spare chance to avoid losing a team member.  I did still lose a second Pokémon since the last update, though, so yeah. XP

Current lineup:
Monferno, Level 23 male, starter
Gyarados, Level 20 female, met on Route 218
Bibarel, Level 20 male, met on Route 204
Geodude, Level 21 female, met at the Oreburgh Gate
Onix, Level 21 female, met in the Oreburgh Mine
Shellos, Level 20 male, met on Route 205

Kind of disappointed as well, actually, when I thought I'd be okay with whatever.  Someone in the comments said that spelling out "Poison" would've worked a lot better, and I definitely agree, but I can't believe I didn't think of it sooner. XP

Anywho, no new losses on the Nuzlocke yet, but I just cleared out the Old Chateau (unfortunately KOing the first Gastly before I could catch it) and defeated Jupiter.  One of the stipulations is that I would get one of the randomly-selected gift Pokémon in the game, which ended up being Eevee, so I had to permabox the Togepi egg for the postgame.  I'll be happy with either a Bronzor or a Gible when I get to Wayward Cave...

I'd partly chalk that one up to the improved level curve as well.  Now beat the whole thing on Challenge Mode, RJF. ;)

I don't have a copy of the game yet, but that's because there's a chance some family or friend might try to get me a copy for my birthday later this month.  Just in case, I'd told my parents that anyone who was considering getting me one of the games should avoid White 2 and buy Black 2 instead.  I plan on doing a Nuzlocke of that game in Challenge Mode in the winter, after I'm done with Platinum (and gone back to wrap up Ruby, of course ) and after I'm done with this semester.

Remember when I said I lost to Hugh. Well, it happened in Aspertia and Flocessy. The Zinzolin Double battles are even more trolling. Hugh's Serperior can faint quickly thanks to the overwhelming Ice Type advantage. And as if Drayden wasn't hard enough, they put the Ice Beam TM after the gym. And the only other Ice move is by move tutor with a relatively low base power. And blue shards are so hard to find. Like they force you to catch Haxorus. Also, no Dragon Claw TM until after the main game. Disgusting.

Looking on Bulbapedia, the other option could've been buying Ice Punch from Driftveil City.  I'm not sure how hard it is to get red shards in those games, though, and it does take a lot, but it could be worth it if you went for Floatzel again or something (or even something like Muk could learn it, for that matter).  Otherwise, they should've probably brought back Medicham or the Hitmon family or something...

EDIT: You could also look for a Trapinch, come to think of it.  I'm not sure if Swablu comes before or later, but it sounds like the best shot is another Dragon, so you might need to take a risk with it on the second time around.
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic

...Wow, posted at the same time. One more option I thought of was Steelix with Ice Fang, since Onix comes pretty early and the Metal Coat seems to be only halfway through the game.  Not sure how early the Heart Scales start appearing, though.

I'd really like a little help understanding the shard system in Generation V, by the way.  I think I'd like to teach Heat Wave and Giga Drain to a lot of my main teams in White, so a more in-depth explanation there could help.

Shards are pretty much useless in Black and White. All they're good for there is to sell them in Icirrus City. Heck, you can't even get any in White (they're only obtainable in Black City).

As for B2W2, they're much more widespread, and the good news is that each move tutor only requests one color of shard. Both Heat Wave and Giga Drain require 10 Yellow shards: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Move_Tutor#Shard_Move_Tutors_2 (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Move_Tutor#Shard_Move_Tutors_2)

Up to three badges in my Platinum Nuzlocke.  Out of any possible free chances or cop-outs I'd allowed myself at the beginning, but I now have the Relic Badge and my team has not changed from the last update except in terms of level (and in one case, evolution):

Current lineup:
Monferno, Level 28 male, starter
Gyarados, Level 28 female, met on Route 218
Bibarel, Level 27 male, met on Route 204
Graveler, Level 27 female, met at the Oreburgh Gate
Onix, Level 27 female, met in the Oreburgh Mine
Shellos, Level 27 male, met on Route 205

Fallen heroes:
Shinx, Level 13 female, met on Route 203
Kricketune, Level 13 male, met on Route 202

I guess the bad news is I don't have anyone in the current lineup who can use Defog.  I don't have a single bird in the PC at the moment, either, so I'm hoping for a Flying-type on one of the upcoming routes to help me out with that and Fly.

...Strike what I just said, I just lost my Onix in a double battle. :( I was hoping her Defenses would be enough, but both her and my Bibarel missed the target on the first turn and a surprise Jump Kick and being ganged up on by both members meant she went down in three turns, leaving Bibarel to finish things off by himself.

So that brings me up to three losses, and means bringing in the Bronzor I caught in the Wayward Cave to hopefully cover for more weak spots.  Just about to enter the Solaceon Ruins with the following team:

Current lineup:
Monferno, Level 28 male, starter
Gyarados, Level 28 female, met on Route 218
Bibarel, Level 27 male, met on Route 204
Graveler, Level 28 female, met at the Oreburgh Gate
Shellos, Level 28 male, met on Route 205
Bronzor, Level 18 neuter, met in Wayward Cave

Fallen heroes:
Shinx, Level 13 female, met on Route 203
Kricketune, Level 13 male, met on Route 202
Onix, Level 28 female, met in the Oreburgh Mine

On a lighter note, my first encounter on Route 209 ended up being a Chansey and I knew I had to have it.  She's on standby in case something else should go wrong fairly soon, but I'm hoping I'm well-prepared for the next gym battle against Maylene.

It took half an hour to find an Axew. Now what's left is to catch Staryu. If only I wasn't in Mistralton and the earliest Staryu is on the other side of the region.

I think whether it seems like he's overreacting depends on whether you see Pokémon as just animals or weapons.  The second interpretation explains a lot about the games, IMO.

Anyway, I'm up to four badges in the Platinum Nuzlocke now and it's about time.  But, I'm also up to four losses, and the last one was my Bronzor.  Surprisingly enough, it was in the last regular battle before Maylene, and that high-level Heracross ended up getting in a critical hit with Brick Break, which was enough to kill it.  Once I took it down with my Gyarados in the rematch, then I only needed Gyarados and Monferno to deal with Maylene herself, but it was a tense battle.

I brought in my Chansey from the PC to fill the empty space in the team.  Currently leveling her up on Route 214 and trying to devise the perfect moveset for trolling through the game. >:3

Current lineup:
Monferno, Level 30 male, starter
Gyarados, Level 30 female, met on Route 218
Bibarel, Level 30 male, met on Route 204
Graveler, Level 30 female, met at the Oreburgh Gate
Gastrodon, Level 30 male, met on Route 205
Chansey, Level 26 female, met on Route 209

Fallen heroes:
Shinx, Level 13 female, met on Route 203
Kricketune, Level 13 male, met on Route 202
Onix, Level 28 female, met in the Oreburgh Mine
Bronzor, Level 29, met in Wayward Cave

Well, got pretty lucky in the Great Marsh where I ended up with a glorious Tropius.  I've already cleared out Route 212, but nothing worthy of note there.  I did end up losing my Bibarel in the battle with Barry (one critical hit plus Rollout not doing enough damage will do that), but I got the Fen Badge soon after, using my Gyarados and the Octillery on Route 213, but also my newly evolved Infernape who not only one-shot Quagsire with Grass Knot, but actually landed the final blow.

Current lineup:
Infernape, Level 36 male, starter
Gyarados, Level 36 female, met on Route 218
Graveler, Level 35 female, met at the Oreburgh Gate
Gastrodon, Level 35 male, met on Route 205
Blissey, Level 35 female, met on Route 209
Octillery, Level 36 female, met on Route 213

Fallen heroes:
Shinx, Level 13 female, met on Route 203
Kricketune, Level 13 male, met on Route 202
Onix, Level 28 female, met in the Oreburgh Mine
Bronzor, Level 29, met in Wayward Cave
Bibarel, Level 35 male, met on Route 204

Not sure when I'll fit in any of the backtracking and exploration with Surf.  Once I get my Tropius out of the PC I can teach him Fly, but for now, I want to try and avoid rotating the team too much.  It'll be easier to write the story that way, IMO.

A few thoughts for rebalancing the metagame in recent generations:

- Stealth Rock HAS to be nerfed.  I'm thinking that normal damage should either be 6.25% or 5% of the max HP, depending on whether the game data could store 5% as a possibility.
- Make Earthquake have 90% or 85% accuracy and give it a weaker counterpart with 75 or 80 base power, but 100% accuracy.  As it is, I think it's way too powerful for such an accessible move, but I don't see GameFreak retconning the movesets at this point so it has to be nerfed.
- Balance out Shell Smash by setting all the stat changes at the same number of stages.  Most of the Pokémon that get it are walls already, so shouldn't it at least be a two-stage decrease for their defenses, or only one-stage for Attack, Special Attack and Speed?
- Moody should follow the same guideline as Shell Smash.  Same number of stages for the increase versus the decrease, which would at least be a good step towards balance...
- Abilities like Swift Swim should only boost by one stage rather than two.  They've been banned in conjunction with auto-weather abilities by Smogon for a reason.

Any ideas of what to add to the list?

EDIT: I'd recommend Roost for Altaria, Viper.  After all, that could also help defend against several weaknesses for a turn if s/he's fast enough.  Otherwise, if you want another attack instead, I'd consider Fire Blast or Flamethrower, depending on how you feel about the lower accuracy.

I hate it when the Champion's team doesnt make any sense. Like Cynthia's Togekiss with Hustle and no Physical moves. Or Lance's Dragonite that spams Draco Meteor and only has Special moves.

If you can, grind your team's speed. Get Carbos and Swift Wings. Also, if you better training, don't use the Lucky Egg so much. While it will take more time, they will be stronger than others that level up with the Lucky Egg often.

That's the most I can say, because I use Roserade to sweep his team.

Well, made it to Celestic Town, but lost my Graveler in the battle with Cyrus.  I was planning to sweep with her, but I basically got stopped in my tracks by a move I should've expected, but didn't. :(

Currently, I'm just starting in the backtracking portions of the game using my Gastrodon for Surf and my Tropius for Fly.  I don't expect to have to grind much for the battle against Byron, but I do need to catch my glorious Tropius up to speed so this bout of backtracking is going to be devoted to that.

Current lineup:
Infernape, Level 38 male, starter
Gyarados, Level 38 female, met on Route 218
Gastrodon, Level 38 male, met on Route 205
Blissey, Level 38 female, met on Route 209

According to the creator of Pokemon, there were originally 190. 39 of them were excluded and became Gen 2 Pokemon. They include:

Scizor (Why?????? We needed Steel types)
Shuckle
Heracross (Some people must be raging right now)
Ho-Oh (I guess that explains why it appeared in the first episode of the anime)
Sneasel (We needed Dark types! Even if this one would suck at the time)
Teddiursa
Ursaring
Slugma
Magcargo
Swinub
Piloswine (Seriously? Lorelei would've had a proper team, not a Slowbro)
Corsola (Why make this? Farfetch'd was bad enough)
Remoraid
Octillery
Delibird (Lol!)
Mantine
Skarmory (Why??????)
Houndour
Houndoom (Why??????)
Kingdra (-_- If they had only finished their work)
Phanpy
Donphan (Man, Gen 1 would've had a decent Ground type. No,I would not have use Nidoking or Nidoqueen because of the lack of Poison moves)
Porygon2 (Nice, GameFreak. That would've motivated players to grind the coins)
Stantler
Smeargle (Lol!)
Tyrogue
Hitmontop (the Hitmons would've been complete from the beginning)
Smoochum
Elekid
Magby (I'm guessing they would be in the wild and catchable which would've been more worth it than to get a Poliwhirl to trade for Jynx)
Miltank (Oh, the horror!!!!!!)
Blissey (Really? They excluded this?)
Raikou
Entei
Suicune (What's the reason for this trio?)
Larvitar
Pupitar
Tyranitar (Could've been so beautiful)
Lugia (Since it's the master of Raikou, Entei and Suicune, it makes sense)

Oh, what could've been......

Note: The first 251 Pokemon had been planned out from the beginning. They cut out 61 originally. Thankfully, they brought back those 61 to Gen 2.

I'm sure it's just another piece of creepypasta, possibly inspired by the whole seizure incident with the anime.  There's tons of creepypasta floating around the internet that have to do with Lavender Town, and I remember another one about an alleged hack of Red where the "Ghost" is a usable character from the start, one-hit kills (and it is strongly implied to have really killed) everything using a move called Curse, and at the end of the game, the player character gets killed off by the Ghost after reliving any times the Ghost had killed someone else or their Pokémon.

The hacked game, which was said to have been called "Black Version" and had a cartridge the same color with no words other than "Pokémon" written on it, had conveniently been lost, according to the story.  There's a lot more creepypasta floating around as well, but generally it all has to do with Lavender Town in some way, shape or form.

Anywho, I haven't updated my Nuzlocke statuses in a while here.  I finally got back to Ruby shortly after I got back home from college, and the Elite Four... well, it was something.  I didn't grind too much specifically because I wanted it to still be a bit of a challenge, but I did NOT expect it to be as close as it was.  The first one was killed by Phoebe, and Glacia got lucky with Sheer Cold, although I didn't suffer any losses at Drake's hands.  But of the six Pokémon I brought into those battles, only my starter survived.

Final lineup:
Blaziken, Level 53 female, starter

Used Pokémon in storage:
Beautifly, Level 20 female, met on Route 101
Linoone, Level 51 male, met on Route 102
Dustox, Level 20 male, met in Petalburg Woods
Ninjask, Level 24 male, met on Route 116
Crobat, Level 46 female, met in Granite Cave

Fallen heroes:
Wingull, Level 14 male, met on Route 104
Magikarp, Level 16 male, met in Dewford Town
Poochyena, Level 12 female, met on Route 103
Shedinja, Level 21, by-product of evolution
Manectric, Level 26 male, met on Route 110
Loudred, Level 28 male, met in the Rusturf Tunnel
Roselia, Level 44 female, met on Route 117
Flygon, Level 52 male, met on Route 111
Walrein, Level 52 male, met in Shoal Cave
Altaria, Level 54 female, met on Route 114
Torkoal, Level 51 male, met in the Fiery Path
Wailord, Level 53 female, met on Route 122

And then, there's the Platinum Nuzlocke, which went pretty smoothly at first but has been constantly kicking my ass ever since Iron Island. Half of my losses have been after getting the Mine Badge, which itself was pretty easy.  But now I've cleared the Team Galactic plot at Mt. Coronet, and I'm trying to rebuild my team with a few new captures to help me through the Sunyshore Gym battle and divvy up the HM moves for Victory Road.  I swear, one of the only things I really don't like about the Sinnoh games is the fact that you need so many HMs to get through Victory Road...

Current lineup:
Infernape, Level 47 male, starter
Rhyhorn, Level 21 male, met on Route 214
Tropius, Level 47 male, met in the Great Marsh
Mamoswine, Level 47 female, met at the Acuity Lakefront
Machoke, Level 47 male, met at Spear Pillar
Floatzel, Level 40 male, met on Route 222

Fallen heroes:
Shinx, Level 13 female, met on Route 203
Kricketune, Level 13 male, met on Route 202
Onix, Level 28 female, met in the Oreburgh Mine
Bronzor, Level 29, met in Wayward Cave
Bibarel, Level 35 male, met on Route 204
Graveler, Level 38 female, met at the Oreburgh Gate
Blissey, Level 41 female, met on Route 209
Gyarados, Level 45 female, met on Route 218
Snover, Level 34 male, met on Route 216
Froslass, Level 42 female, met on Route 217
Octillery, Level 38 female, met on Route 213
Glaceon, Level 43 male, randomly selected gift Pokémon
Gastrodon, Level 38 male, met on Route 205

I also have Black 2 and Conquest now, and I've already been playing the hell out of Black 2.  I got up to Lentimas Town in Normal Mode and I'm hoping Drayden will be a breeze with a Swanna that knows Icy Wind and a Lucario that knows Ice Punch.  Plus I've also got half the Trick Room team I was trying to build: I've caught Cofagrigus, Onix (need to get a friend over so I can trade to evolve it) and Eelektross, still need Bronzong, Lapras and Druddigon.

I've been a little distracted by the Battle Subway, though, and also a bit unnerved by what seems like a huge gap between gyms out of nowhere, so I haven't made much progress in the last few days and I've been focusing more on Platinum and starting out on Conquest, which came as a Christmas gift.  But once Platinum is done and I've finished Black 2 on Normal Mode, I want to restart the game to Nuzlocke it on Challenge Mode.

January 8th. Major announcement coming.
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on January 08, 2013, 06:28:56 AM
Well, some of the Nuzlocke artists I've been following advised not to expect too much.  But GameFreak seems to have come through (pictures courtesy of a friend's Facebook and Bulbapedia's Twitter):

Theme naming based on colors or minerals has been left behind, but Generation VI is coming and fast (and the name for the third version seems to be pretty easy to deduce :P). The presentation also showed a few seconds of gameplay, and it seems that the sprite-polygon mix used in Generations IV and V will be left behind altogether with this one:

Admittedly, I kind of preferred the look of Gen IV and Gen V, but this could be something I could adjust to given enough time.  Also, the starters have been previewed as well, and unlike previous generations, the international names have already been decided ahead of time:

It seems like the entire theme to Generation VI might be the idea of global unity, or at least there's this theme to the way the games are being produced.  Because of the advances in communication and a restructuring in how the localization will be done, X Version and Y Version will be released worldwide at the same time, which is definitely a first.

I do think it's really early for a sixth generation considering how much players like me had to adjust to (but then again, I only got into Generation IV around the release of Black and White), I could probably wait a little longer than nine months for the new game.  Although I already know I'm probably going with Fennekin on the first run. :P

Pokemon X and Pokemon Y Official English Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_p9IxR2PhTU#ws)

From what I can deduce:

They're bringing back Magikarp/Gyarados, Golett/Golurk, Mienshao/Meinfoo, Munchlax/Snorlax, Ralts/Kirlia/Gardevoir/Gallade, the elemental monkeys, Patrat/Watchog, Litwick/Lampent/Chandelure, Psyduck/Golduck, Sneasel/Weavile, Audino, Dratini/Dragonair/Dragonite and...... Pikachu/Raichu? Why?

Bug Type and Fire Type Gym for sure. I'm loving the looks of it.
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on January 08, 2013, 09:11:53 AM
Believe me, I'm just as disappointed about Pikachu coming back.  It's been over 15 years and it makes a lot more sense for the games to have a different mascot for each generation, rather than one for the entire franchise.  But with the way things are being localized this time around, I really hope the marketing teams start taking our older demographic into account a bit more.  They only really started to with the dialogue and story of the last two generations, but with the overall marketing...

Fixed the link on the other page, by the way.  I should've caught it sooner, but yeah.  Anywho, I think it makes sense if a lot more Generation V Pokémon come back because they haven't gotten a whole lot of screentime compared to the others.  Pretty happy about Gyarados, Dragonite and Kirlia coming back, and depending on how things go, I might end up using Golurk this time around, because somehow I never did and I'm disappointed with myself now.

Also wondering if any of the starters for X and Y are going to be dual-typed.  Fire/Dark might work for Fennekin and Grass/Poison seems kind of logical for Chespin since it seems to be porcupine-based.  I wouldn't mind if all three stay single-typed even when they're fully evolved, though, because sometimes the dual typing unintentionally upset that simple, elegant balance of Grass, Fire and Water.

EDIT: At the 1:01 mark, that looks like a third gym.  And judging by the wall illusions or whatever we can catch a glimpse of, I'm guessing it's either Psychic or Ghost.

Not sure which one I prefer at this point, since they're both so majestic.  Can't wait to find out more about the typing, abilities, etc., but admittedly, which version I go with will probably have more to do with the other Pokémon in the games.  I originally went with White over Black because of the other version exclusives (no Gothita in White was the big one ).

Haven't really made a ton of progress in Platinum since the last update.  I accidentally lost my Floatzel in a trainer battle on Route 222, but I had an extra Buizel in the PC and so I've been grinding her and my Rhyhorn day by day, and I just got Rhyhorn to evolve yesterday.  I'm also trying to chip away at Black 2, but it's been going pretty slowly.  I'm still looking for a Lapras with both Shell Armor and a Special Defense-augmenting nature near the Village Bridge, and it's been pretty damn tedious.
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: Red Jaguars Fan on January 11, 2013, 02:28:12 AM
The Legendary X Pokemon is a stag - The X axis measures distance, so the stag will travel across land
The Legendary? Y Pokemon is a bird/dragon - The Y axis measures height, so the bird will fly up high etc
The third game will most likely be Z because X Y Z represent three dimensions - which would make perfect sense as this is the first 3D pokemon installment

Interesting.

Yeah, exactly.  And yet there's so many people either joking about the sex chromosomes or seriously thinking that's why the games are called X and Y. Granted, I think the Japanese logo does have a double helix in it, but the geometry theme seemed like an easy one to come to when working out the connections, since these legendaries present the largest contrast yet.

Well, if the translation convention for the Gen IV Eeveelutions is anything to go by, it'll probably be named "Nympheon" in English.  Not that I have any idea what that would have to do with any possible typing.

I've seen so many bizarre guesses at its type already, including Ghost (some sort of predatorial trickery is possible, I suppose, but GameFreak isn't known for being THAT clever), and a new Light-type.  No source has confirmed or even hinted at a Light-type to my knowledge, and why should there be one after well over a decade with no changes to the typing balance, which is perfect as is? Dark doesn't necessarily mean "absence of light" here, and Fighting and Psychic combined seem to do a perfect job of complementing the "evil" Dark-type.

Anyway, Nympheon is really too frilly to be anything other than a Normal-type (just looking at it called Clefable, Wigglytuff and the like to mind).  I'm still holding out for a ninth Eeveelution of hopefully the Dragon-type, since all the other post-Gen I introductions have come in pairs...

It's named Sylveon, apparently. Whatever that Sylv- part means.

Oh yeah, since the Eeveelutions color corresponds to a certain type, what type could this be? I can't think of anything white, and pink is out with Espeon.

Well, there's a theory that this may actually be the shiny form rather than the regular form.  The crazy part of my mind also started thinking Bug for some reason.  Possibly the idea that the ribbons could be made of silk, the Japanese and French names containing the part "nymph" and "Sylveon" possibly referring to forests and/or the possibility for Silver Wind as an attack.  True, this is still a stretch and I'm still expecting Normal first and foremost, but Bug is starting to sound more likely to me.

Also, did we mention Gligar/Gliscor and Makuhita/Hariyama as returning Pokémon? The new footage confirmed both of those lines.

Grinding in Victory Road in Platinum is taking much longer than I wanted it to, thanks to having to change the roster again.  But on the plus side, I caught a Gabite in a Nuzlocke. >:3

I also have a shiny Vanillish that I just caught in Black 2 this afternoon.  Trying to come up with the best moveset for it, but since pure Ice-types don't really get a lot of coverage, I don't have that many options... Given that it's probably going on a Hail team, Blizzard, Flash Cannon, Signal Beam and Light Screen seems like the best choice.

Has used Grumpig in the 3rd gen games? I have one in Ruby, but I'm thinking of dumping it because it learns no good Special moves besides Psychic. It's not like Psychic types are needed and it would do horribly against the Pokemon League (Dark+Ghost weakness and Steel nve)
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on March 08, 2013, 09:29:38 AM
I've always favored Dragon- and Fire or Fighting-types for the Hoenn Elite Four, personally.  When I wrapped up my Ruby Nuzlocke, I had a team of Blaziken, Torkoal, Flygon, Altaria, Walrein and Wailord.  Unfortunately my Blaziken was the only survivor, but generally I felt like I had good choices for the team in spite of the random chance.  The only one I didn't really have much of a direct match for was Phoebe, but I made it past her by using generally strong moves like Water Spout, Ice Beam and Earthquake.

It can be easy to forget that none of her Ghost-types have Levitate, but if you have something good that can use Earthquake to its full potential, that's what I'd go for since Dark-types weren't really at full power yet in Gen III.

They released a new form of Mewtwo...... I don't know how to feel about it.
Title: Re: Pokemon Topic
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on April 09, 2013, 05:28:07 AM
I'm a little torn too.  I do like the way it looks, but I'm only stuck wanting to like it because giving Mewtwo a new forme now seems so... forced.  It's just too much like Keldeo and Shaymin getting new formes to drum up hype for the movies (although in Shaymin's case, I would've just preferred that as the only forme).

I think the key to making an alternate forme feel natural is to introduce it alongside the main forme as part of the Pokémon's central theme (e.g. Castform, Cherrim, Sawsbuck, Rotom).  Giratina and Kyurem are the only ones where I like the addition of a new forme after their introduction, and I think it's because they became more central to those later games and there were a few hints at least for Kyurem... I remember looking at Black Kyurem and White Kyurem and thinking that I should've seen the formes coming, based partly on the main forme's lower base stats compared to Zekrom and Reshiram, but mainly on the Pokédex entries and the moves Freeze Shock and Ice Burn in B1W1's game data.

As far as my own game files go, I'm currently running through the Elite Four in Platinum, doing one battle each day this week.  That means Aaron and Bertha have already been defeated, and I'll let you know how things turn out when it's over. ;) I'm almost done in Black 2 on Normal Mode as well, after plenty of delays; I've got the entire roster of the Trick Room team, and all that's left is to farm for Shards to tweak the movesets, grind for the Elite Four and then search for the last few postgame TM's I need.

I just finished reading through this thread, and I'm glad I'm not the only Nuzlocker on this forum. I've learned a few things from them, such as how hard it is to do a regular run once you've done a Nuzlocke, and how screwy the Gen 1 games really are. I'm doing a Nuzlocke on Diamond right now, and I've gotten two badges, but I've also lost two Pokémon (Alicia, a Bibarel, and Wade, a Meditite). I'm kind of worried that Maylene is going to take another Pokémon from me, so I've been grinding my team to make sure they're ready for her and her Lucario. I think they're at level 28 now, but I can't remember for sure.

Has anyone played HeartGold version for the DS? I got it last week and I'm embarrassed to say this, but one week later, I already have more than 55 hours on this game. I'm so addicted! :o

I really love this game. So much content and so many things to do. I've already got all Johto and Kanto badges. I also beat Red at Mt. Silver and throughout this whole experience, I haven't "blacked out" once! Sadly, I wasn't able to get all legendaries and Raikou is still roaming around. Suicune took forever and sadly I made Entei faint by accident (damn accidental critical hit). Both Ho-Oh and Lugia were caught, as well as Articuno. Sadly, I also made Zapdos and Moltres faint by mistake. Oh well.

Just thought I'd share my thoughts and current experience.

Title: Re: Pokémon Topic
Post by: The Viper on August 09, 2013, 02:21:42 AM
I think the Mega evolutions are pointless. Like, Blaziken is already way overpowered. It's so over powered that it's in ubers in competitive battling. Giving it a mega evolution, which seems to just be a new form with more power, makes Blaziken way more powerful. And it messed with the whole idea of pokemon evolution, which is that there can only be 3 stages in an evolutionary line. I do like that Mawile and Absol get one, but the rest are unnecessary imo. But I sorta like the Ampharos one.
Title: Re: Pokémon Topic
Post by: Red Jaguars Fan on August 09, 2013, 10:01:50 AM
I actually want X and Y more. The Mega Evolution is only limited to battles, though, and only those holding the Mega Stone can have it. The game creators will make sure to hide the Mega Stone really well.

I really don't understand this. What's the point of these Mega Evolutions? Some Pokemon will be completely OP/Meta (like Blaziken) and it could break the game. It's completely unnecessary.

No, I totally agree.  To be honest, there's so many ridiculous "more is better" ideas going on in X and Y that I think I'm stopping with Generation 5. :|

Buuuuut on the other hand, I've been considering getting the Gen 1 and 2 remakes some time because Gen 3 and 4 had the best game structures IMO.  Might as well grab them to enjoy the later generations' game structure with the nostalgic settings.

Fairy is resisted by Fighting, Fire, Steel. It's super effective on Dragon, Dark, and Ice.

I'm probably going to wait a while for the hype to cool down, heheh.  From on the sidelines, I'm still overwhelmed by all the new stuff and not going "ZOMG FUCK YES" right away like most of the internet seems to be... I'm just left wondering if there's other people that feel about the same way, but are too afraid to give an honest critique out of fear of being labeled genwunners.

So far, all I can say is I think the mega-evolutions are bull, it sounds like the main game's going to be way too easy, Ice seems to be getting the short end of the stick as I expected (really, it's just become the rarest type in the game) and Chespin's final evo actually made out pretty well.  I think I'd still be going with Fennekin on my first playthrough if I do get one of the games, but Chespin might be my second choice.  But I'll wait and see if it's actually worth getting once all the hype cools down.

Definitely keeping tabs on the Smogon thread now, hahah.  Still not too happy about Ice getting shafted, but at least some of the move tweaks seem to be good choices... aside from maybe powering down Thunderbolt/Ice Beam/Flamethrower and Thunder/Blizzard/Fire Blast, but I suppose it'd make the metagame a little slower-paced compared to the lightning-fast Gen V.

I do think the moves with the dual type quirk are a little too much (especially if some line up for a double weakness on one type, like Electric/Grass on a Water-type), but other than that, not as broken as I was expecting.  Still looking out for the tiers and clauses to be solidified, but it wouldn't surprise me if every single Mega-Evo gets booted straight into Ubers.  I wouldn't have it any other way if I were to join the Gen VI metagame.

Basically, the "peanut gallery" types an in-game action in the chat box and it makes Red perform said action. However, it's not as cool as it sounds. With so many people playing and lag between people typing, Red just moves around like a dumbass and other laughable things are done, like accidentally releasing a decent level Charmeleon (that happened by the way). It's official. Twitch Plays Pokemon is one of the greatest things on the planet. And the memes created!

Seriously, Helix Fossil has been raised to god status. Eevee is the "False Prophet". There's debate on anarchy and democracy. It's just totally hilarious!

The whole experiment almost died!  All because a trainer blocked their way and there was nowhere else to go!

Aw, I missed it. That's bad design on GameFreak's part. No trainer that you battle should move in such a way that gets the player trapped with almost no way out.

Modified the post. Level 62 Dragonite bettered by a level 36 poison moth with pretty much no attack power. XD

Thank goodness for poisonpowder. It lost to Blue's Pidgeot afterward.

I stopped caring about TPP after they finished Crystal.

Has anyone played Pokemon Battle Trozei? I must say I'm hooked. I'm not that good at it, but I'm having fun with it.

This is late news, but there is a new character named Zinnia. I have no idea what her role (Lorekeeper) is like, though. But her theme is so awesome.

And IGN is stupid. 7.8/10 because "too much water" and "too many HMs"... No shit, Sherlock.
