Title: Forum history
Post by: Legend of Legends on March 13, 2013, 04:58:24 PM
Since I became a new member yesterday, I am curious to know the history of this forum. Anyone could tell me, but I would really like it if an experienced member would explain.

Man, I wouldn't know where to start.

Well, this forum was started in 2005, but didn't become active until a year later. We used to be part of Forumer, but moved to SMF 2 years ago and have been here since. Anyone else who would like to fill in more, feel free. And I'll add on to that accordingly. :P

Oh, and welcome to the board League. It's always great to have a new member, especially one that posts.  :mrteal:

So I'm guessing this forum has been through a lot of things.

Here is what I came up with

2005:
- This forum was started by PhantomPBR, but it wasn't a Legends related forum at all.

2006:
- PhantomPBR opens this forum up as a Legends fan forum and many new people joined in order to talk about the show.

- Some notable users include nicklegends/Ed (King's Storeroom owner), Aaron (Heart Room owner), and The Mandarin Hand (Room of the Mandarin Hand owner).

- A lot of discussion and activity related to the show starts to pop up.

- Kamehameha becomes a nuisance and gets banned for it. His signature posts involved him screaming "BENZIBAB!!111!11" and said that he was Robbie from "Kamehameha".

- Nick GaS decides to air the same 20 episodes.

2007:
- Even more Legends fans join and we have new Legends websites and discussions popping up.

- Legends airs on Nickelodeon for 10 days and we get the official production order for 10 episodes.

- Likewise, Nick GaS decides to stop screwing around and gives us the official production order for the whole series.

- Nick GaS goes down the drain, and this forum loses interest.

2008:

???

2009:
- More new active members join and old ones return for a second go.

- There is a debate between another forum and this forum about the use of Legends episodes they uploaded to MegaUpload. As a result, we lost the Legends episodes that were posted.

2010:

?????

2011:
- This forum moves to Forumer.

- The Silver Monkey becomes an admin while Purple Parrots Fan becomes a moderator.

- A couple of more members join.

- Green Monkey Warrior joins and subsequently gets banned in early 2012.

2012:
- This forum has a database crash and we lost about one month of posts.

- More new members

2013:

?????
Title: Re: Forum history
Post by: Purple Parrots Fan on March 14, 2013, 01:48:29 AM
Aaron was the owner of "Choices of Yours," not "The Heart Room." And TAW also became a moderator, not just me. ;)

Anyways, to add a few things:

Basically 2005 was the "pilot" of this forum. and it was mostly Phantom and his forum friends posting.

2006:
- During the summer, this forum REALLY takes off and has tons of activity. Also, it's worth noting that The Daily Episode Log (http://phantomstemple.us.to/index.php?topic=136.msg497;topicseen#msg497) was the main go to topic at this forum back in the day. This was before the Spam Topic ever became anything. There was a little activity in the latter topic in late 2006, but not by much.

2007:
- I can't believe this was left out. Renegade Pancake's April Fools Day prank where he impersonates Kamehameha. There are several topics in the Jester's Court if you want to check those out.
- Also, the Spam Topic starts to pick up more activity, and spans quite a few pages.

Literally nothing happened in 2008. Everyone's interest basically dwindled down when Nick Gas left the airwaves in late 2007.

2009:
- Several members (TAW, TBF) make a comeback to this forum. And other members (ALF, RJF, TBK) join the forums as well. And the Spam Topic REALLY takes off and spans many pages. The forum officially bounces back from its 2008 slump, as active as ever.

2010:
- Not much else happened other than a Podcast that was to be started up by Toltendo, ALF, and The Dark Enforcer/Bob. But, the idea never really got off the ground, so it was scrapped. Other than that, it was just more activity by us members in the Spam Topic.

2011:
- The Temple Games section is created, and becomes very active. I know this doesn't really count, but we never had a games section here up until then.
- Also, we get a new generation of members. While TBF stopped being active, other members like PP319, THK, Viper, etc. join us. And TRJ makes a comeback from 2009 here, where he's been active ever since. :mrred:

2012:
- GMW's ban from this forum, like stated above. And also the database crash, where we lost posts from most of February to early March of last year. But, just like in 2010, it was just us members posting again. Even though the activity became a little less active by the summer.
- Also, Forumer's version of this forum gets deleted for good due to merely treating it as a redirect to here. AKA, one of the stupidest TOS violation reasons I have ever heard. Totally a ridiculous idea. Oh, and the old Spam Topic reached 3,812 pages before the shut down. And we have yet to beat that. Just less than 1,000 pages to go to surpass that.

And so far this year, not much else has happened. But, it's still pretty early in the year, so that can change. ;)

I knew I could count on you to fill in the details, PPF. ;) And thanks for correcting me about Aaron's site too.  :P

And since we are speaking about Aaron, he was the only other member to ever get banned from this forum. So kamehameha and GMW weren't the only ones to be banned. aarnptrick or however you spelled it was banned also.

And here are the April Fool days jokes for reference:
2007: Renegade Pancake/The Mandarin Hand posts under kamehameha's name and acts like he hacked the forum. He fools everyone into believing that kamehameha banned nicklegends and co.
2008: ???
2009: ???
2010: ???
2011: Everyone's name is filtered to represent a hated singer.
2012: We all changed our names to pretend to be a hated singer.

Last year, we changed our names to mediocre pop singers of today. Last year, I went by the name "Bieber Maniac".

Who knows, maybe this year we'll change our names to terrible players. Heck, I did it two years ago as a Halloween joke. I was "Terrible Claude".

And some defunct features that use to exist on this forum included the Chatroom and Arcade. I miss the Arcade, but it was so buggy and caused lagging on the site. We also had the Legends Store and Pendant system, but it was nothing special.

In 2008 and 2009, nothing happened. In 2010, Ed pretended that the old Spam Topic had been deleted. So he created an "April Fools Day" spam topic, and acted like we had to start all over again. But, nobody actually fell for it because our postcounts were all the same still.

I don't know what we're gonna do this year though. It's definitely time to move away from the "hated pop stars theme." Since we've done that two years in a row now. Oh well, us mods will probably think of something. ;)

This seems like some cool stuff, for the most part. The only negative things seem to be all those members that caused you guys trouble, and how Nick GaS got cancelled, which I remember from some time ago. It was really stupid. Let's see what happens this year to see what we will add to our timelines once the year ends!

That, and Nick Gas's 20 episode cycle. Where they played the same 20 episodes throughout late 2006 and made no attempt to change it.
Title: Re: Forum history

Oh yeah. Forgot that.
Title: Re: Forum history
Post by: Toltendo on March 17, 2013, 06:06:58 AM
So yeah, as PPF mentioned, I tried to get a podcast going in 2010, but I felt very insecure about my voice, how it had to be organized, what sort of content would we be talking about, etc. We even had a couple of preview videos that we made for the show, but it fell through.

I really wanted something to happen, but I guess it was better than just doing nothing about it. I would like to try it one more time to see what happens and just have a flowing conversation about whatever it is. I think I can do it again if anyone is interested, although my knowledge is pretty rusty.

Other than that, there was a flurry of activity when I joined in 2009. It was the summer days and winter breaks when I was the most active. I got to know some of the people on the forum and its nice to know these people are actual, decent people who have/had a passion for Legends at that time. It's been a small-knit community when I joined, but unfortunately I don't frequent the place much due to having other stuff needing to be done in real life, but I am starting to have interests in watching Legends again.

But yeah, I didn't know Aaron was banned from this forum. There seems to be a lot of other crazy/exciting stuff that has happened that I didn't know, but I kinda miss the arcade, but it was really buggy though.

Oh yeah, I tend to lurk here late at nights and you guys gave me a nickname because of that, I forgot what the name was.

I thought you called yourself "The Janitor," actually. :P

Not sure if the fanfiction side of things is noteworthy, but there were at least two or three periods for that.  Mid-2006 had a big collab project with forty fanfic episodes written by various members, which ended up being called the "Lost Season 4" or such.  I unintentionally started a new craze when I came in later that year, since instead of just a handful of episodes, I had enough ideas to write a whole series, an imagined revival called "The Rediscovery." So that inspired a ton of other full series attempts instead of the individual episodes that were being written before.

And then motivation died down and we moved on to more real-life responsibilities or creating other things, so all that's left now is the "Make your own episodes" thread.  But of course, you're always free to write your own episodes if you can and want. ;)
Title: Re: Forum history

Neat, I may search for some of of that.
Title: Re: Forum history
Post by: Purple Parrots Fan on March 17, 2013, 03:36:30 PM
Oh yeah, I almost forgot Aaron was banned here. He mostly started fights with Renegade about video ownership. Each one of his complaints got more and more annoying each time he came here. So in the end, he was banned. Also, I'm pretty sure Johnnie (one of the CNS admins) tried to join here, but was banned before any flamewars were to take place.

As for the fanfics, those were pretty big around here. Like TAW mentioned, a lot of members came together and wrote fanfics for the "Lost Season 4" of Legends. Then came the aforementioned Rediscovery, TBF's "Wild Jungle" series, and TBK's "Rebirth." I'm pretty sure RJF started a series of his own, I'm not sure how many episodes he made though. As for me, I never got into fanfic writing. I always thought it took too much time, and I had no ideas. Oh well, that's what the "Make your own episode thread" is for, if you don't feel like writing a whole story. :P

In fact, I think I was the one who came up with the "make your own episode" idea. I was messing around with the random.org generators, and I brought up the idea here. TSM then made a thread of it and it quickly caught on. Other than that though, the fanfic section is pretty much dead.

Title: Re: Forum history

I believe it was around the time I acknowledged the one year anniversary of us moving to SMF. And everyone noticed TRJ's new banner/status. So with our move to SMF being January 6 or 7 2011, I believe it was January 7, 2012 where TRJ got his new found status.

All of this is remembered thanks to a forum search and finding the posts in the Spam Topic. :P
Title: Re: Forum history

Yup, that was indeed the exact date when I got the Fogg-up banner. It was when I called PPF a "he" by accident that day when they gave me that banner. Here is the link where everyone first acknowledged it:

So yeah, it was more "recently" when I got that banner. ;)

With all due respect for TRJ, PPF, and any others who have contributed, here's an "updated" timeline of the forum. I'll be constantly adding to this, so look out for it. :D

2005:
- This forum was started by PhantomPBR. However, it wasn't a Legends related forum at all; rather one devoted to video games.

2006:
- PhantomPBR opens this forum up as a Legends fan forum and many new people joined in order to talk about the show.

- Some notable users join up, including nicklegends/Ed (King's Storeroom owner), Aaron (The Choices are Yours owner), and The Mandarin Hand (Room of the Mandarin Hand owner). Other notable users to join this year include Purple Parrots Fan (PPF), The Silver Monkey (TSM), and The Ancient Warrior (TAW).

- A lot of discussion and activity related to the show starts to pop up.

- TAW begins writing one of the forum's first great "seasons" of Legends fanfics, Legends: The Rediscovery, setting a new standard for well-written Legends fanfiction.

- Forum member Kamehameha becomes a nuisance, and gets banned for it. His signature posts involved him screaming "BENZIBAB!!111!11" and claiming that he was Robbie from "The Pendant of Kamehameha".

- Nick GaS decides to air the same 20 episodes in a row...over and over and over...

2007:
- Even more Legends fans join, including The Red Jaguars (TRJ) and The Bamboo Forest (TBF), and we have new Legends websites and discussions popping up.

- Legends airs on Nickelodeon for about three weeks, and we get the official production order for 19 episodes. "The Jewel-Encrusted Egg of Catherine the Great" is the first episode aired, on May 14.

- Likewise, Nick GaS decides to stop screwing around, and gives us the official production order for the whole series.

- Nick GaS goes down the drain, and this forum loses interest.

2008:
- Activity on the forum slows down considerably, as the loss of Nick GaS and members' waning interest in the show cause a very slow period in the show's history.

2009:
- More new active members join, including The Bandit King (TBK), Red Jaguars Fan (RJF), and Asian Legends Fan (ALF). Old ones, such as TAW, also return for a second go.

- There is a debate between another forum and this forum about the use of Legends episodes they uploaded to MegaUpload. As a result, we lose the Legends episodes that were posted.

- New member The Bandit King begins writing his popular fanfic series, Legends: Rebirth.

2010:
- A slight period of inactivity, as more than a few people tend to lose interest in the show again.

- Member Toltendo suggests doing a Legends podcast.  Sadly, it never comes to fruition.

- Numerous problems with the Forumer host prompt many members to demand that the site be moved to a different server. Phantom and the other admins agree, and before the year is out, a new forum is in the works.

2011:
- The forum officially moves from Forumer to Simplemachines.

- The Silver Monkey becomes an admin, while Purple Parrots Fan and The Ancient Warrior become moderators.

- A couple of more members join, including PurpleParrot319 (PP319) and The Headless King (THK).

- Green Monkey Warrior joins, and due to events that could be considered "trolling", subsequently gets banned in early 2012.

- The Bandit King publishes his "countdown" of the Top 80 Greatest Nickelodeon Shows of All Time.  Rugrats tops the list, with Legends making it at #12.

- The old Forumer forum finally goes belly-up after more than a year of relative inactivity.

2012:
- The forum has a database crash, and loses about one month of posts.

- More new members join, such as PurpleParrot4Life and GreenMonkeys#1 (GM1).

- As a follow-up to the Greatest Nick Shows countdown, The Bandit King publishes his list of the 100 Worst Songs of All Time.  Rebecca Black's "Friday" comes out on top.

2013:
- The "gmwisback" April Fool's prank occurs, in which PPF poses as the banned Green Monkey Warrior and threatens to shut the site down. In addition, the forum flips upside-down, plays the song "Harlem Shake", and changes to Comic Sans font.  Various members also changed their names to those of notoriously bad contestants (for example, The Red Jaguars becomes "Ron the Cheater").
Title: Re: Forum history
Post by: Purple Parrots Fan on April 02, 2013, 11:28:18 PM
Once again, Aaron owned "The Choices are Yours," not "The Heart Room." ;) Plus, Aaron got banned in 2007 for continuously starting fights with Renegade. Also, while 2010 wasn't the most active time period, Toltendo wanted to start a Legends Podcast. But the idea ended up getting dropped. And whether or not you want to include this, but the old forum was finally deleted for good at the end of 2012.

Other than that, great timeline. And yes, we were bad, bad contestants for April Fools Day yesterday.

GM1 = Dumb Claude
PP4L = JASON GO!! (Dana)

Anyhow, I edited accordingly.  I also changed something: Legends aired for 19 days in 2007, not 10. They showed "Catherine the Great" through "Royal Torque" in reverse production order.

I have no idea. Also, by reading TBK's timeline above, Forumer's version of this forum went belly up in late 2012, instead of late 2011. I'm pretty sure it was late 2012, since ALF brought it up in the Spam Topic around that time.

I remember that, I thought the forum went to hell. I was actually the first to crack the code and knew it was a prank, but TAW PMed me and told me to keep it secret, so I pretended I didn't know what was going on, but I knew what was going on ;). You probably would've had a spamming fun time .

Also, in February of this year, the whole Forumer base took an arrow in the knee and vanished. Good riddance

Yeah, I was totally surprised I even pulled it off at all. I mean, I figured people were gonna catch on eventually, since this has been done before. But I thought I was gonna be exposed within 5 minutes and the prank would've been a complete failure. Thankfully, the prank was a success, and I did "spook" just about everyone. Plus, it brought the activity back up, since this forum was REALLY quiet throughout the month of March. Also, TSM tried to "shut" the forum down about a week later. Just to make it look like the Viacom feds were doing some sort of investigation. But, that part of the prank didn't catch on, and the forum went back to normal after that.

And only one day after PPF's last post here, I joined the forum, being still the last in joining. Let's keep writing the history :P

Sometimes I wish I could have joined back in 2010.

What about 2006? The forum was brand new back then, and Nick Gas still existed. ;)

Yeah, I know, but in 2006 I didn't even realize this forum existed. I say so because there's when I find this place, as I said in the Spam Topic, and had a failed register try, that's why I usually say 2010 instead of 2006 ;)

Either way, 2006 was when this forum really became active. To think, the Daily Episode Log was the main go to topic before the Main Spam Topic. Oh have times have changed.

2014:

TRJ makes the 50,000th post on the Main Spam Topic! It was "John & Tia" FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.

Yeah, John and Tia, so typical of him.

But yeah, congrats to us to making it to Post 50,000 of the Spam Topic! :mrsilver:

Should also add

2014: GM1 does the Greatest Legends Episode Tournament. After 4 months and 120 episodes, we determined that The Lost Hornpipe of the Pirate Captain is the greatest Legends episode ever, winning by a slight 4-3 over The Lucky Pillow of Annie Taylor. Lawrence of Arabia's Headdress and The Mussel Shell Armor of Apanuugpak also made the Final 4.

Oh right, that too. I mean, we included TRJ's toruney from 2012 on the timeline, so why not that?
