The Heart Room / Some Thoughts about Temple Runs
« on: March 05, 2014, 08:11:27 PM »
It appears that there are generally strong feelings of love and hatred toward certain episodes here, and particularly about certain temple runs. Some of the most revered include Lucky Pillow of Annie Taylor, Lost Hornpipe of the Pirate Captain, and Discarded Seal of Ivan the Terrible. The most despised runs include Bifocal Monocle of One-Eyed Jack, Golden Cricket Cage of Khan, and Keys to the Alhambra. I could continue on with lists of overrated, forgettable, unfair, and frustrating runs, just to name a few. Please note that these lists are not exhaustive.

I'd like to offer some of my own thoughts about some of these runs, particularly where my thoughts deviate from what appears to be the "general consensus." I hope that this can be a non-hostile environment where we can have a healthy discussion and accept opinions, even if they differ from one another.

The Heart Room / "Funky" Temple Game Calls/Rulings
« on: September 07, 2013, 10:52:32 PM »
There were a number of temple games (and other rounds) where the judging, ruling, or scoring was a bit iffy or off. I'd like to use this thread to discuss some of those instances, and how the poor judging ultimately affected the rest of the episode.

One of the rulings I'd like to focus on is the team temple game from Melted Head of Madame Tussaud. That was the game where the teams had to run out and grab 4 busts while avoiding the swinging obstacles. You may also recall it as the game where Screaming Jennifer got obliterated by a giant swinging ball. As far as I can tell, this particular run has never been "called out" for improper judging, but I have always thought that the Purple Parrots got all four busts in their basket before the Orange Iguanas. They scored at 0:54, 0:47, and 0:44. At the 0:44 score, Kirk says, "Purple Parrots only have one left!" but then says that they got two and would have to bring one back. Then the Purple Parrot boy scored their third at 0:23 and fourth at 0:06, but Kirk said that the score after their third score was 3-2 Orange. In the end, the Orange Iguanas won the full pendant of life, making the final score 1.5-0.5 pendants and allowing the Orange Iguanas to go to the temple. If the pendants were awarded "correctly" (as I see it), then the Purple Parrots would have gone to the temple.

Do you think the ruling for that temple game was correct?

I think it would be fun to have a thread where we can post "points of interest" (any random thoughts, comments, questions, and the like) about different episodes from the show. I would love to discuss full episodes, so feel free to rewatch episodes and contribute your own points of interest!

The first episode I would like to discuss is the Lucky Pillow of Annie Taylor:

1. At the top of the episode, Olmec revealed the artifact to be the Lucky Pillow of Annie Taylor. However, it was always called the Heart-Shaped Pillow after that- at the end of the legend, upon learning of the artifact's location, when Kirk threw it to commercial after the tiebreaker, when Kirk introduced the temple rundown, and when Olmec said "... into Medusa's Lair, where you can grab the Heart-Shaped Pillow, or into the treacherous Swamp."

2. All of the temple games could have gone either way between the two teams. Jamea of the Purple Parrots was only slightly ahead of John in the first game, where the contestants had to find hand and footholds on a wall in order to reach a hanger at the top. The second game was pure luck, where Stuart and Missy had to plug the holes in order to stop the water from squirting them. And in the team boat game, John and Missy barely edged out Jamea and Stuart (who, by the way, grabbed a hold of their ring first). How do you think this episode would have ended if the Purple Parrots had entered the temple instead?

3. During the tiebreaker, Stuart went to ring in before John, but then hesitated, allowing John to ring in. He began to give an incorrect answer before changing his mind and answering correctly. If that had happened during Season One, would that have been allowed, or would the Blue Barracudas have been deemed wrong?

4. The temple run is very similar to that of Golden Earring of Henry Morgan. Both of these Season 2 teams were in search of artifacts in the Center of the Rooms and took a clockwise path to get there. The female contestants were the frontrunners from both teams and carried their teams' only pendants. They encountered guards in the bottom of the central shaft. Missy found the key in the Dark Forest and went straight up to the Shrine, while Ashley went into the Mineshaft, where she was removed. However, we know that the Dark Forest would have allowed entry to the Shrine because that door opened when Shem completed the statue. Upon completion of the King's Storeroom, it is clear that Missy opened both the Observatory and Medusa's Lair; it is also believed that Shem opened both the Observatory and Room of the Mandarin Hand from the King's Storeroom. Do you think that means that the temple guard placement, therefore, was also similar between the two runs (unentered entry room, bottom of the central shaft, and Mineshaft)?

The Heart Room / Temple Room Statistics
« on: May 09, 2013, 12:04:45 AM »
I'd like to dedicate this thread to calculations and statistics about different temple rooms... stuff like how often guards were in particular rooms, which objectives got completed how often, etc.

I'm going to start with the Room of the Ancient Warriors. I think it's safe to say that the Room of the Ancient Warriors was one of the most enjoyable rooms of the series (or at least, I think so). Although it may have felt cramped, the room was put to good use. Its objective was very simple, but the fact that there were multiple potential temple guard locations made it much more suspenseful.

I was interested in collecting some statistics about the room, and I thought I would present them here if you were interested. Here is a start of what I have found:

  • There were five artifacts located in the room: Snow Cone of Mount Kilimanjaro, Dried Apple Half of William Tell, Bullet-Riddled Handbag of Belle Boyd, Jeweled Scabbard of Sforza, and Jewel-Encrusted Egg of Catherine the Great.
  • There were nine episodes where the contestants entered from the Chamber of the Sacred Markers. There were 13 episodes where the team entered from the King's Storeroom. Six teams entered from the Shrine of the Silver Monkey.
  • There were seven episodes in which the team did not attempt the objective. This count does not include those five episodes previously listed.
  • There were two episodes in which time ran out with a contestant in the Room of the Ancient Warriors: Discarded Seal of Ivan the Terrible and Lost Whale Bone of Pytheas. Both are clockwise central shaft runs. In both runs, the second runner had tried the leftmost and middle runs (in that order) before time ran out. The next door failed to activate in time.
  • The rightmost armor was tried 22 times. In nine episodes, it activated the next door. Five times a temple guard was behind that armor.
  • The middle armor was tried 24 times. It activated the next door 15 times. Eight guards were behind the middle armor.
  • The leftmost armor was tried 12 times. It activated the next door twice. There were only ever two guards in that armor: Bifocal Monocle and Discarded Seal. In both cases, the guard was avoidable. During Bifocal Monocle, the Ancient Warriors was part of a dead end, so the whole room (not only the guard) was avoidable. In Discarded Seal, the rightmost armor was going to be the one to activate the next door.

The Heart Room / Temple Run Contestants in Other Situations
« on: May 04, 2013, 05:08:10 PM »
One of the questions posed in the "What If" game from the Temple Games caught my attention and made me think: What would have happened if certain contestants were given other layouts/paths? Would they have been successful, or would our perceptions of those contestants have been upheld?

I hope to pose a few situations, perhaps a few that that have been given before, that will cause us to think about how and why certain contestants are praised while others are dismissed.

I will begin in the following post with my first hypothetical situation and opinion. Feel free to contribute your own thoughts! ;)

The Heart Room / The Room of the Secret Password
« on: March 29, 2013, 09:53:29 AM »
The Room of the Secret Password was featured during the final episodes of Season 2 and all of Season 3. Despite it being in 53 episodes, there were only 12 contestants (over the course of 11 episodes) in which a contestant read a password aloud. Below is a list of all of those contestants.

Chandra, Leopard-Skin Cloak of Annie Oakley
Andrea, Lion-Headed Bracelet of Chandragupta
Zac, Secret Map of the Bandit Queen
Kelli, Thornwood Gavel of Judge Roy Bean
Jeremy, Golden Spider Web of Robert the Bruce
Keith, Missing Portrait of Hans Holbein
Quentin, Red Sash of Tokugawa Ieyasu
Brandi, Red Sash of Tokugawa Ieyasu
Kimberly, Broken Trident of Poseidon
Randy, Metal Beard of the Egyptian Queen
Dawn, Pearl Necklace of Gwalior
Matthew, Bullet-Riddled Handbag of Belle Boyd

Kelli has taken some heat on this site in the past for not speaking intelligibly when she read the passwords aloud. But when you look at that list, it should become apparent that she was not the only one on that list who failed to remove her mouthpiece before saying the passwords. Zac, Jeremy, Randy, and Matthew all kept their mouthpieces in as well.

The biggest difference between Kelli and the other contestants is that instead of reading the password toward the spotter with a microphone who stood in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (see image below from "Lion-Headed Bracelet of Chandragupta, courtesy video posted on youtube.com by ChargerTheWolf), she placed the tablets on the pedestals at the front of the room and spoke looking out directly in front of her.

Why do you think the Room of the Secret Password was completed so infrequently? And what about Kelli's performance in that room (please note, I am asking about her performance, not the outcome) makes her get so much flack?

The Heart Room / Room Completion Strategies
« on: March 01, 2013, 05:28:26 PM »
What do you think were some of the best and worst ways to go about completing each room objective? Which contestants/episodes had the best and worst strategies for each room objective?

Some of the first rooms that come to mind in which different contestants took (or could have taken) different strategies included:
  • Shrine of the Silver Monkey- grab all three pieces and then assemble, or grab each piece one at a time?
  • Tomb of the Headless Kings- pull all the vines and then find the skull, or pull a vine and look for the skull after each one?
  • King's Storeroom- smash all the pots first, or find the key and try it in the exposed pedestals first?
  • Dark Forest- look for a key, or immediately try to plow through the wall?
  • Pit of the Pendulum- swing on the rope and try to get back to the ledge, or immediately jump off and climb?
  • Medusa's Lair- one snake at a time, or all at once?
  • Pit/Pit of Despair/Wall Climb- climb along the back wall, or jump into the Pit and climb up the wall?

Feel free to include other rooms not mentioned above as well.  :)

The Heart Room / Temple Guard Locations
« on: January 04, 2013, 01:24:35 PM »
Identifying the temple guard locations in each episode has been brought up previously in the Heart Room topic "Where were the temple guards?", but not every episode was completed. Hopefully we can do that here. Feel free to use the other topic for reference.

Ideally, I'd like to go through one episode at a time so that each episode gets undivided attention. If you have any thoughts about where unseen temple guards were, please comment!

RUNNING TALLY: Below is the list of where the guards were or were thought to have been in each episode. Rooms in parentheses are rooms in which a guard was spotted but did not capture a contestant. Episodes preceded by a "~" note that those episodes featured fewer than three guards encountered, but everyone was in consensus about where the remaining guards were. Those rooms are listed in bold. The Moat / Creating a New "Child Board"?
« on: December 30, 2012, 11:40:11 AM »
I was reading through a lot of different threads from the Heart Room pertaining to different aspects of all of the episodes ("Where were the temple guards?" and "Where were the half pendants" just to name a few). I think it would be nice if we could create a child board within the Heart Room that had links to each episode, where we could compile all of the tidbits that are currently scattered around the Heart Room. It would also be nice to have this addition so that individual episodes could be talked about without creating an unnecessary sequence of threads, each pertaining to the same episode. It would also make discussion easier, since all of the information gathered about a particular episode would all be concentrated to that one area, rather than having to look through 20+ pages of threads of insight in order to bring together all of the aspects regarding that episode.

How does everyone else feel about this idea?

The Chamber of the Sacred Markers / Rate the Temple Guard Encounters
« on: December 27, 2012, 02:47:50 PM »
I thought I'd take some inspiration from TRJ and try to make a "Rate by Poll" thread. This poll is about Temple Guard Encounters, and hopefully we'll end up finding which episodes featured the runs with the best temple guard encounters. I hope that people are interested in participating and that all goes well.

For this poll, we'll go episode by episode, ranking the temple guard encounters of each run. All polls will be on a 1-5 scale, with 5 being very funny/memorable (or whatever other factors influence your perception of a "good temple guard encounter") and 1 being not funny/memorable at all. The poll will (hopefully) be updated every day with a new episode. I'll average each day's poll when the poll ends, and I'll post a running tally of the results below.

PREVIOUS EPISODE RATINGS
Blackbeard's Treasure Map: 2.75
Golden Cup of Belshazzar: 2.00
Galileo's Cannonball: 3.25
Wild Bill Hickok and the Dead Man's Hand: 2.67
John Henry's Lost Hammer: 4.00
Golden Cricket Cage of Khan: 3.50
Elizabeth I's Golden Ship: 2.25
John Sutter and the Map to the Lost Gold Mine: 3.20
Star of Sultan Saladin: 4.25
Keys to the Alhambra: 2.25
Helmet of Genghis Khan: 3.00

TODAY'S EPISODE TO RATE

The Heart Room / The Room of the Golden Doors
« on: December 24, 2012, 02:23:34 PM »
Since we're on a trend here, I thought I may as well continue by asking: What do you think caused the discrepancy between between the number of victories in the Tomb of Ancient Kings in comparison with the lack of victories from the Dark Forest?

The Tomb of Ancient Kings was used throughout all of Season One, housing six artifacts: John Sutter's Map to the Lost Goldmine, Stone Marker of Leif Erikson, Paintbrush of Leonardo da Vinci, Mask of Shaka Zulu, King Tut's Cobra Staff, and the Trojan Hoseshoe. Three of these runs were wins, and one other artifact was reached. The other two runs featured teams get trapped in a dead-end Swamp space.

In Seasons 2 and 3, the Dark Forest housed a total of seven artifacts: three in Season 2 and four in Season 3. They were the Lost Love Letter of Captain John Smith, Sacred Ring of Sultan Suleiman, Missing Weather Maps of Charles Lindbergh, Upside-Down Compass of Henry Hudson, Useless Map of the Chibcha Chieftain, Mysterious Manuscript of Mary Shelley, Mummified Hand of the Egyptian King. None of these artifacts were even reached, and three of these runs ended in triple capture.

What do you think was the cause for the discrepancy between reaching artifacts in the Tomb of Ancient Kings and the Dark Forest? Was it the difficulty of the rooms, the paths, the contestants' abilities, or something else?

The Heart Room / Surprisingly Successful Runs
« on: December 14, 2012, 07:53:30 PM »
Which runs were you completely surprised to see the contestants reach the artifact and/or bring it out?

For me, the first episode that comes to mind for "surprisingly successful" is "Enormous Feather of the Me Linh." Karisa spent quite a long time in the Quicksand Bog- among other rooms- yet she was able to get all the way to the King's Storeroom. The team completed 8 room objectives en route to the Feather. Overall, this is one run where I did not expect the team to be as successful as they actually were in the temple.

The Temple Games / Legends Word Association Game
« on: November 27, 2012, 09:45:59 AM »
Let's try a new Legends-related word association game! I'll begin by naming something from the show, and then the next person will write the first Legends-related thing that comes to mind in association with the previous word. Also include the link between the two words.

For example:

Olmec
Red Glowing Eyes (Olmec had glowing, red eyes when he talked)
Missing Eye of David (They have "eye" in common)
David (Contestant)
Karisa (His partner from "Enormous Feather")
Quicksand Bog (Karisa couldn't navigate it during her temple run)
And so on...

I hope you all enjoy this game!

The Heart Room / Season Four Rooms
« on: November 24, 2012, 09:22:22 AM »
A number of rooms of the temple changed from one season to the next, as well as between different layouts of the same season. Going from Season 1 to Season 2, the Shrine of the Silver Monkey and Heart Room (briefly) stayed the same, they kept the Troubled Bridge around, they reused the Mineshaft, and the Observatory kept its name. In transitioning from Season 2 to Season 3, the King's Storeroom was moved to a new location but kept its name and objective, and the Shrine of the Silver Monkey, Secret Password, Dark Forest, Jesters' Court, Crypt, and Ledges stayed as they were.

If a fourth season of LOTHT happened, which rooms do you think would have been changed, and which ones do you think would have appeared again? (And just to clarify, I mean a fourth season directly after the third; not nowadays, since the entire design and style of the show may have been changed if a remake of the show came about.)

The Heart Room / Artifacts Located in the "Center of the Rooms"
« on: November 12, 2012, 11:29:11 PM »
I looked through the site and couldn't find any topics specifically about the "Center of the Rooms" artifacts, so I thought I'd bring up a new topic to discuss these particular episodes.

As it turns out, there were a total of thirteen artifacts placed in the "Center of the Rooms." Three were placed there in the first season (Ponce de Leon and the Lost Fountain of Youth, Helmet of Joan of Arc, and Codebook of Mata Hari); four were placed there in the second season (Lucky Pillow of Annie Taylor, Ivory Elephant of Scheherazade, Leopard-Skin Cloak of Annie Oakley, and Golden Earring of Henry Morgan); and six were placed there in the third season (Comet-Embroidered Battle Flag of William the Conqueror, Marble Armrest of Xerxes, Golden Spider Web of Robert the Bruce, Missing Portrait of Hans Holbein, Mussel Shell Armor of Apanuugpak, and Lost Whale Bone of Pytheas).

Of these artifacts, only two were successfully brought out of the temple: Lucky Pillow and Mussel Shell Armor. The Golden Earring and Battle Flag were grabbed in the final seconds of their respective runs as well. What is interesting about these four runs is that all of their paths forced them through the bottom floor and then up to the top floor. The artifact was never reached when the team was forced to start on the upper floor and then descend to the lower floor. What do you think caused this particular pattern to occur?

Might it have been because the teams were forced to complete at least one extra task in the Observatory, which could be bypassed if the team began on the bottom floor?
Were the other teams not as well-suited to take on the grueling paths? Were the paths more difficult when the teams started on the upper floor?
Were the temple guard placements more harsh in those other episodes? Were they just unlucky enough to have fewer pendants in the temple?
