Rediscovery EP: Roald Amundsen's Final Telegram
« on: December 17, 2006, 07:55:04 AM »
Author's Note: This is one of the episodes of my independent project, Legends: The Rediscovery.  More information on the project can be found by following this link.

Episode 4: Roald Amundsen's Final Telegram

The camera pans through a thick jungle to stop in front of an ancient temple. The giant stone head at the base of the temple breaks the silence:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg!"

Kirk descends from the rafters on a rope and runs up the Steps of Knowledge. "Thank you, thank you everyone!" he shouts to the excited audience. "Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple. Well, actually, it's Olmec's Temple, and the rooms are full of hidden treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Olmec, which legend are we gonna hear about today?"

Olmec replies:
"The legend of Roald Amundsen's Final Telegram."

"Ooh, Roald Amundsen's Final Telegram!" Kirk says in response. "Well the legend is set, and one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the Final Telegram so we can help return it to its rightful owner. Will it be:
"The Red Jaguars—" the camera pans to the cheering teams one at a time— "the Blue Barracudas— the Green Monkeys— the Orange Iguanas— the Purple Parrots— or the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple. First, they must cross the moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today:
"In front of each team a series of four stone platforms hang above the Moat. One player from each team will step onto the first platform when I say 'go,' then pull the next platform toward them and make their way to the other side of the Moat. If a player falls into the water, they will have to go back and start over! Once the first player is across, their teammate must follow the same way.
"When both players are across, run over and hit your team's gong by hitting it on top like this." He slams down on the Red Jaguars' gong to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round, so teams— are you ready?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"I said ARE YOU READY?" Kirk asks again. The teams cheer and yell even louder.
"Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"LET'S ROCK!" Olmec shouts.
"Let's get started, then!" Kirk yells, full of energy. "On your marks teams, get set… GO!!!"

The teams start off at more or less the same rate— except for the Red Jaguars, whose first player falls in the Moat right off the bat and already has to begin again. By the time she climbs out of the water, the Green Monkeys and Orange Iguanas' first players have each stepped onto their third platform. The Green Monkeys girl is the first player to jump down onto the other side of the Moat, followed by the Silver Snakes, Orange Iguanas, and Blue Barracudas' first players. Soon enough, all the teams get their first player across.
The Silver Snakes' second player makes it across the Moat quickly, and she runs over to hit her team's gong. The Blue Barracudas gong in second, whereas the Green Monkeys and Orange Iguanas are starting to fall behind. The boy on the Red Jaguars team is very fast compared to his partner, and so the Red Jaguars become the third team to successfully cross the Moat and hit the gong.
"We're still looking for one more team!" Kirk shouts, encouraging the Green Monkeys and Orange Iguanas to keep going. However, the girl on the Purple Parrots beats both of them to the last position when she slams down on the gong and the pedestal lights up.
"That's it!!" Kirk announces, going over to stand with the Silver Snakes. "Silver Snakes blazed across the Moat. You'll be going on to the Steps of Knowledge, along with the Purple Parrots—" the camera pans to each of the other teams in order— "and the Blue Barracudas— and the Red Jaguars! Green Monkeys and Orange Iguanas gave it an excellent effort. They're not going away empty-handed, we've a great gift for them for playing and here's what it is." The players on the Green Monkeys and the Orange Iguanas will each be receiving a $50 Regent sports package.

The four teams are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about Roald Amundsen's Final Telegram. Pay attention teams, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you one step closer to Olmec's Temple."

Olmec begins to tell the story:
"In 1910, a ship called the Fram set sail for Antarctica led by a man from Norway. His name was Roald Amundsen. First he wanted to go to the North Pole, but when he found someone had done that already, he had to round up his crew and sail to the South Pole instead.
" 'BEG TO INFORM YOU FRAM PROCEEDING ANTARCTIC— AMUNDSEN,' read the telegram Roald sent to his crew. They all met their captain on Madeira Island in the Atlantic Ocean and sailed south right away.
"It took two tries for Roald and his crew to reach the South Pole. Many men died from the cold or lack of food, but finally, Roald and his few remaining crew members became the first people to reach 90° S— the South Pole.
"In 1928, Roald was sent on a rescue mission to find a few explorers caught in the Arctic. legend has it he sent a telegram before departing, but he and the telegram both disappeared during the mission. Your quest is to find Roald Amundsen's Final Telegram and bring it back here."

"Thanks Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the story. "So tell us, where is the Log Book?"
Olmec replies:
"Roald Amundsen's Final Telegram can be found in the Junction of the Secret Shafts."

"Teams," Kirk begins, walking down the steps, "you are now standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a minute, Olmec will ask you a question about the legend. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. If you're first, your step will light up, and you'll have three seconds to answer. If you're right, you can move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, one of the other teams will get a chance to answer. The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple. Okay Olmec, we're now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
"Was Roald Amundsen from: Denmark, Norway—?"
The girl on the Blue Barracudas stomps down first: "Norway."
"Correct," replies Olmec, and the Blue Barracudas get to move down one level.
"Next question, Olmec," Kirk says.

Olmec now asks:
"What was the name of Roald Amundsen's ship: The Tram, The Sc—?"
The boy on the Silver Snakes team buzzes in: "The Tram?"
"Incorrect," replies Olmec, and a split second later the boy from the Purple Parrots rings in:
"The Fram."
"Correct," says Olmec, and the Purple Parrots get to move down one step.
"Next question," Kirk commands, and Olmec asks:

"What was Roald Amundsen's original destination: The North Pole, South Africa, or East Timor?"
The girl on the Silver Snakes rings in first, but guesses nothing before a bell sounds to indicate that time is up. Then the boy on the Purple Parrots stomps down first:
"The North Pole…?"
"That is correct," Olmec replies, and the Purple Parrots move down again.
"One more correct response, Purple Parrots, and you're going to the Temple Games," Kirk explains. "Next question, Olmec."

Olmec continues:
"In what year did Roald Amundsen reach the South Pole: 1711, 1811, or 1911?"
The boy on the Red Jaguars buzzes in first: "1911!"
"Correct," Olmec replies, and the Red Jaguars step down one level. Olmec then goes to ask the next question:
"The South Pole is located in what continent: South America, Antarctica—?"
The boy on the Silver Snakes rings in: "Antarctica."
"Correct," says Olmec, and so the Silver Snakes move down a step.
"Everyone's on the board now!" Kirk says. "We're looking for two teams to go to the next round. Next question, Olmec."

Olmec then asks:
"On what latitude parallel is the South Pole: 45° S, 90° S, or 180° S?"
No one buzzes in for a second, but then the girl on the Silver Snakes guesses: "90° S…?!"
"That is correct," Olmec replies, and the Silver Snakes move down again.
"One more answer, Silver Snakes, and you're going to the Temple Games," Kirk narrates. "Olmec, next question."

Olmec continues:
"Which of the following animals live in Antarctica: Penguins, Polar bears, or Siberian huskies?"
The girl on the Purple Parrots stomps down first: "Penguins…?"
"That is correct!" Olmec shouts, and the Purple Parrots step down to the bottom level.
"Purple Parrots are going to the next round, but who's going to join them: the Red Jaguars, the Silver Snakes, or the Blue Barracudas? Next question."

Olmec asks:
"Of the following, which would an explorer most likely find in Antarctica: Sand dunes, Lava flows, or Glaciers?"
The girl on the Silver Snakes rings in and shouts confidently: "Glaciers!"
"That is correct!" Olmec shouts, and the Silver Snakes move to the bottom step beside the Purple Parrots.
"That's it!" Kirk announces. "We've got our two teams right here, and they are… the Purple Parrots and the Silver Snakes! Red Jaguars and Blue Barracudas, so sorry you couldn't make it. You won't be going home empty-handed, we've got a nice gift for you." The players on the Red Jaguars and Blue Barracudas will each be receiving their own copy of King Kong on DVD.

"Now," says Kirk, "the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, but before we go on, I'd like to hear a little about our team players. On the Purple Parrots, we have—" he holds the microphone up to the girl's mouth, as the players are not wearing nametags.
"Kendra Romanescu, and I'm twelve years old," she replies.
"It says here you'd want to be either a writer or a veterinarian," Kirk reads. "Tell me about that."
"Well," Kendra explains, "I've always loved horses, though you don't see too many down in San Antonio. I know a lot about them, though, and being a vet would be easy for me and I'd get to be around animals too." The audience claps as Kirk goes to interview her partner.
"And your name is—?"
"Curtis Galloway, and I'm thirteen years old," replies the boy.
"And you're a big football fan, I hear?" Kirk says.
"Yeah, my favorite team's the Miami Dolphins," replies Curtis.
"Favorite player?" Kirk asks.
"Daunte Culpepper," Curtis answers.
"You'd also like to be a filmmaker, it says here," Kirk reads.
"Yep," Curtis replies. "Who knows, maybe I'll make the next Remember the Titans."
"I think we've got a good team here," says Kirk. "Let's hear it for the Purple Parrots!" The audience applauds, then Kirk moves on to interview the opposing team. "But hold on, we've got the Silver Snakes. And you are…"
"Vivian Santos, and I'm twelve years old," replies the girl on the Silver Snakes team.
"Now, I understand you want to be a writer like Kendra over there," Kirk says.
"Yes, I've got a story I'm working on called 'Shipwreck at the Bottom of the Earth,' " explains Vivian. "And get this— it's about a boy named Eirik who gets stranded at the South Pole. Weird, huh?"
Kirk suppresses a laugh, then goes to interview Vivian's partner. "And your name is—?"
"Derek Martin, and I'm twelve years old," answers the boy.
"You're into collecting things, I hear," Kirk reads. "Things like what?"
"Mostly comic books and baseball cards," explains Derek. "Teen Titans and Batman comics, New York Yankees, those're my favorites."
"Well you'll have to do some collecting here," Kirk says. "Let's here it for the Silver Snakes!" The audience applauds for a moment here.

"Why don't you girls go get ready for the second Temple Game, and you guys go get ready for the first," Kirk says. "Now, in the Temple Games, these teams will be competing to win Pendants of Life. The winning team will need their Pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards when they go to Olmec's Temple. There are three Temple Games, and Olmec will tell us about the first one."

Olmec begins:
"Roald Amundsen and his crew needed to gather food and provisions before leaving on their voyage. Here, you will do the same. You are now strapped in a rotating lever and, when Kirk gives the signal, you will run around to grab a piece of food off of the pedestal. Next, return to drop it in your bin.
"The player with the most pieces of food in her bin after 60 seconds wins."
The camera segues to Kirk. "Can't travel on an empty stomach, I guess," he says. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock. On your mark, get set, GO!"
Kendra and Vivian now take off, running around in the lever and lifting off the floor to get to their stone platforms. They both miss the platform the first couple of times, and can't seem to find a good rhythm to grab the bottles.
"The key to this game is to get the momentum right," comments Kirk. "There's a pattern to this, and you have to find it to get to the bottles." Kendra makes it first, whereas Vivian has to go once around again to get her first bottle, by which time Kendra has three. After a little longer lights flash from above to indicate that time is up.
"Let's see how they did!" Kirk says, running over to count the bottles. "Kendra got five in the time limit, but Vivian only got three. Purple Parrots win a half Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds for a moment here. "Silver Snakes can catch up in this next game, it's also worth a half Pendant. Olmec, tell us about it."

Olmec continues:
"Roald Amundsen had to steer the Fram through many different regions before reaching the South Pole. Here, you will follow his expedition. Before you is a wall with four targets representing four of the stop-overs on Roald Amundsen's voyage: Madeira, Cape Verde, the Bay of Whales, and Antarctica. When Kirk gives the signal, load the slingshot and fire at the first target on your wall. If you cover a target, aim for the next one.
"The first player to cover all four targets— or the player who's hit the most targets in 60 seconds— wins."
"Who's a hot shot and who's not?" Kirk says. "Time to find out. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock. Ready, aim, FIRE!"
Curtis and Derek each load their own slingshot and take aim at the targets labeled "Madeira." Both cannonballs slip right out of their slingshots before the slingshots are released, then the boys slowly reload.
Curtis finally hits "Madeira" on his fifth try, but it takes Derek seven tries to cover the first target. However, Curtis keeps missing the second target in the meantime. A few seconds later lights flash to signal that time is up. Kirk then runs over to give the summary.
"Well, you each got one, so it's a tie!" Kirk announces. "BOTH teams win the half Pendant of life!" The audience applauds. "So it's 1-½, Purple Parrots. The Silver Snakes can steal this game, though, because this next game is worth a full Pendant. Olmec, tell us about it."

Olmec narrates:
"Today the South Pole is marked with the flags of several countries. Here, you will add your own flag. When Kirk gives the signal, sail out from the dock and, without touching the water, jump out to plant your flag on the island. Then, sail back and run back up the dock.
"The first team to mount their flag and run back up the dock— or the team that's furthest along in 30 seconds— wins."
The camera now fades to Kirk. "Whoever wins this goes to the Temple," he explains. "30 seconds on the clock. Ready, set, GO!"
Both teams row out to the "islands" on the other side of the stage using the ancient oars. Curtis and Kendra reach the island and mount the flag with 12 seconds left, the Silver Snakes right behind them. The Purple Parrots hop back in and grab onto the rope that anchors their boat to the dock, then pull back in and turn around. The Purple Parrots' boat pulls right up to the dock first, and Curtis and Kendra run up onto the dock and next to Kirk with only one second left.
"Down to the wire!" Kirk commented. "But Curtis and Kendra got back just before time ran out. They win the full Pendant, they've got two Pendants, the Silver Snakes had only a half. The Purple Parrots are goin' to the Temple!" The audience cheers for Curtis and Kendra. "Derek, Vivian, you gave it a great effort too. You're not going home empty-handed, we've got a nice gift for you." The Silver Snakes players will each be receiving a $100 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Nestle. "Great job, Purple Parrots, but we're not done with you yet. Let's see if you can make it through Olmec's Temple."

« Reply #3 on: December 17, 2006, 04:44:19 PM »
"Olmec!" calls Kirk. "Curtis and Kendra have proven themselves worthy and earned the right to enter your Temple. But before they go, can you give them any information about the Temple to help them retrieve Roald Amundsen's Final Telegram?"
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You could start by running up the stairs to the Crypt. Grab the book from the skeletons and pass into the Great Chasm. Here, you could choose to swing across the gap and climb up into the King's Storeroom. Smash the clay pots to find the key which will lead you into the Chamber of the Sacred Markers. Match the symbols on the right to the runes on the left and pass into the Room of the Ancient Warriors. Place yourself in the correct armor to open the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue there, and you may be headed toward the Room of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the correct inscription, and shout it out to open the door to the Pharaoh's Secret Passage.
"Slide down the tunnel to the Quicksand Bog, where you could smash through to the Dark Forest. Find the key in the tree, and you'll enter the Junction of the Secret Shafts, where you can grab the Final Telegram. Race across the room and you'll gain entry to the Tomb of the Headless Kings. Attach the skull on the altar to its proper king to release the doors. Then, pass through the Great Chasm, climb through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone." Olmec pauses for a second here. "You won 2 Pendants in the Temple Games. Who's going first?"
"I am!" shouts Kendra eagerly.
"Very well, Kendra," replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "Good luck to both of you."

"All right then," Kirk says, beginning to explain the rules. "When I say 'go,' you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way towards the Final Telegram. Be careful though— the temple contains many locked doors and dead ends. But there are three old shafts somewhere in the Temple. If you can find one and it's open, you can jump in and slide down right into the Junction of the Secret Shafts. Also beware, because there are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. If you enter one of those rooms, the Temple Guard will jump out and grab you. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken from the Temple— and it'll be Curtis's turn to enter and try his luck. If you can reach the Final Telegram, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. If you return through the gates with the Telegram in three minutes, you'll both be handsomely rewarded— and here's how!"
• No matter what happens, Curtis and Kendra are each guaranteed a Regent sports package.
• If they get to the Telegram with time still on the clock, they'll also win $1,000 Toys 'R' Us gift cards.
• Getting the Final Telegram out of the Temple before time's up will earn them four-day vacations for four in Montreal!

"All right, so let's see if they can take it all home with them!" Kirk shouts, excited. "By the way Kendra, maybe you can tell us about your strategy."
"Dunno about Curtis," replies Kendra, "but I'm goin' on intuition. I'm just gonna take the doors that're closest to me first— and something tells me I'll need to take the Crypt into the Great Chasm, so I'm going up."
"Well let's see if your strategy works out," Kirk says. "Lower the gate, Olmec, while Curtis and Kendra get into position."
As the Temple Gate drops, Curtis and Kendra both put their mouthpieces in.
"You've got three minutes to get the Telegram. Ready, GO!"

Kendra rushes through the Temple Gate and, as she told Kirk, runs up the stairs and into the Crypt. The correct skeleton just happens to be the first one she pulls on, then she goes right into the Great Chasm and swings on the rope across to the other ledge. She tries both doors there, but only the door up into the King's Storeroom opens up. So Kendra passes through the open doorway and races up into the Storeroom. (2:41) She knocks all three pots off of their pedestals, finding the key in the third. The first keyhole she tries happens to be the right one, and two doors open up. Kendra wants to try a quicker path first, so she goes down into the Chamber of the Sacred Markers only to meet her first TEMPLE GUARD!
Kendra has a Pendant of Life, however, and she hands it to the Temple Guard to keep going. She matches up all the tiles fairly quickly, but only one new door opens up— the door leading down into the Tomb of the Headless Kings. So she climbs down the ladder, grabs the skull on the altar and finds the right king on the first try, only to have no doors open and run into the second TEMPLE GUARD!
The Temple Guard removes Kendra from the Temple, and now Curtis rushes in with a full Pendant and 2:01 remaining. For some reason, he slides down into the Ledges, only to be forced to climb up into the Crypt and enter the Great Chasm from there. Curtis then swings across the gap, passes through the King's Storeroom, and goes down into the Room of the Ancient Warriors. (1:29) Here he tries the suits of armor one at a time, and the middle one happens to be correct. Then the next door opens, allowing Curtis to enter the Shrine of the Silver Monkey! (1:17) He runs to the back of the room and grabs all three pieces of the statue at once— only to drop the middle part in the middle of the room.
"He's lost in the Room of the Shrine!" shouts Kirk, apparently forgetting the name of the room. Curtis jams down the head with 1:05 remaining, but then realizes the middle piece has to be put into place. Finally, he gets the statue put together and, noticing that all adjacent doors have unlocked, descends into the Dark Forest with 49 seconds left. After struggling to find the key and then the keyhole to match, Curtis enters the Junction of the Secret Shafts with 31 seconds left. He grabs the FINAL TELEGRAM and runs for the door.
Compared to reaching the artifact, Curtis leaves the Temple fairly quickly. He leaves the Junction of the Secret Shafts with 25 seconds left, enters the Great Chasm with 20 seconds left, enters the Ledges with 16 seconds left, and makes it out of the Ledges and through the Temple Gate with 7 seconds left!
"Unbelievable!" shouts Kirk. "They won it all— the sports packages— the gift cards— they're goin' to Montreal! We had a great time here today— I know they did, I hope you did too. Join us next time for another great adventure of the Hidden Temple!"

Episode Summary
Episode 4: Roald Amundsen's Final Telegram

Name of Artifact: Roald Amundsen's Final Telegram
Season: 1
Layout: 1
Result: Made it!
Time Remaining: 0:07
Team: Purple Parrots
Pendants Won: 2
Location of Artifact: The Junction of the Secret Shafts

Oddly enough, the teams that didn't score a victory until Season 2 in the original Legends are the first two to record wins in The Rediscovery. Fast Kendra decided to take the doors closest to her, and this strategy worked well for her. The production crew let her go down a long dead end, but thankfully she was only taken out of the Tomb of the Headless Kings AFTER completing the objective.

Curtis made a couple stupid mistakes, including visiting the Ledges which wouldn't lead to the Great Chasm, but nevertheless he made it to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey with a little more than a minute to go. He was pretty clumsy with the monkey, though, and dropped the middle piece of the statue on the way to the front of the room, but made up for this by taking the vertical passage down into the Dark Forest. Curtis made a great effort to speed up after grabbing the Telegram, and made it out of the Temple with seven seconds left.

Trivia and Records:
This was confirmed to be the first episode of The Rediscovery ever produced, and a few possible clues could be found throughout.  Kirk miscounted the first Temple Game (not affecting the score, however) and incorrectly named rooms a more often than usual (and even Dee sounded like he'd been away from the show for a while), but also incredible enthusiasm could still be seen throughout the show. Listen to his kicking off of the Moat and you'll be instantly reminded of the original show's "The Golden Cup of Belshazzar."

The Temple Diagrams' style, I must say, are pretty good.  Considering they're loosely based off mine.  (Noticeable by the yellow box representing the artifact, the black circles representing the Temple Guards, the tan circles representing the hidden Half Pendants, the path being the color of the team, and - most notably - the thinner path representing the path out with the artifact.)
