Legends: The Rediscovery
« Reply #90 on: November 08, 2009, 02:44:30 PM »
Welp, I promised I'd explain how I write my fanfics, so here's the general formula:

For each episode, I have a Temple design drawn out at the beginning, with the placements of the guards, artifact and half Pendant(s) if the team doesn't go in with two Pendants.  I also mark ventilation shaft locations and which ones are open/closed and try to indicate dead ends, closed-off rooms and alternate paths that players can take.

Once I have that drawn up, the next thing I do is decide on the outcomes for each team if they make it to the Temple and then separate outcomes depending on which player comes first.  So, basically, the Temple Run has twelve possibilities.  Of course, I can't guarantee the team will have less than two Pendants, so "triple seizure" is just an alternate choice any time I decide a team would meet all three Temple Guards with a certain outcome.

I rely a lot on diagrams and random number generators from there on out.  I try to make little diagrams, pictures or tables that vaguely resemble the Moat crossing or Temple Games from above, and then the generated numbers usually indicate how far players move.  In the Moat, there's usually a chance a player or team could be sent back; if the sequence for a certain team has three zeroes in a row (sometimes only two, depending on the Moat), a player falls into the Moat and has to go back (the numbers generated turn into his/her speed going back to the start, then).  Two zeroes in a row, a small number and then another zero are used to mark if a player breaks the rules in any way other than falling into the water, though.

The Steps of Knowledge writing is in two parts.  I set up all the questions first, then jot down each player's answer. (I used to think both players on the team were given a microphone for the Steps, and I kept writing like that into Season 2, so even after I found out I was wrong, I kept that just to be consistent).  So, after I've written down all the potential answers, I use a two-row generator with the possible numbers being from 0 to 8.  The first number in the sequence corresponds to the first player that rings in, and the second matches up with the second (if it's zero, however, I write that down as no teams attempting the question).  The second number also tells me how many more places in the sequence until the next pair of numbers I'm going to use for the next question.  That's why a lot of my Steps rounds tend to drag out, lol.

The Temple Games each have their own distinct rules for what the numbers mean.  In the wheel game, for example, the numbers only range from 0 to 2.  A total of 4 adds one rotation to the player's score, but three 0's in a row means that the player falls off the wheel (if it's just one or two, the player just isn't moving as fast :P).  Once the player gets over ten rotations, however, each following rotation requires a sum of 8 rather than 4 (that's to keep the scores from getting too outrageous).

The tiebreaker, if it's needed, is a simple generation of four different five-number sequences, one for each player.  The greatest sum corresponds to the player who rings in first, and then two more sequences are generated and compared (the first is "player gets it right," the other is "player gets it wrong and the other team wins").

I eliminate the Temple Run outcomes as teams are done, so when it's down to just one team, I do the two-sequence comparison again to decide if the boy goes first or if the girl does.

Of course, I do have my way and bend the rules a bit to make things go faster at times to keep them interesting.  My memory's a tad fuzzy, but I think there was only one double sweep at the Steps I wrote? "The Cracked Teacup of Elizabeth Cady Stanton"? and that was something I didn't decide randomly, partly because I didn't have a lot of short Steps rounds and partly because Blue vs. Silver at the Temple Games was very rare and I wanted to write it in for that particular episode.  Other times (like "The Broken Flask of Louis Pasteur") I have the outcome planned as soon as the Temple design is drawn, but I just need to write everything else randomly.  And, of course, other times I just come up with random ways to keep things interesting (see "Henrique Galv?o and the Santa Maria," or both "The Thorn Crown of Emperor Augustus" and "Urashima Tar? and the Box of Lost Time").

And, of course, I try to keep certain conventions:
?   There are certain color combinations at the Temple Games that I won't feature for an entire season, and that has a tendency to bend the expected outcomes when the teams go on from the Steps.  After all, in the original show, no season featured all fifteen team combinations, so the first twelve, thirteen or fourteen combinations to occur become the only ones to do so.
?   Not all the teams make it to the Temple in a certain layout.  The only time that happened in the original show (aside from Season 3, of course) was Layout XII, so I only wanted one layout (Layout VII) where all the teams go at least once.  That tends to bend some of the Temple Games outcomes, too.
?   There was never a season where every team logged at least one win, and I wanted to keep that as well.  The reason it was the Iguanas in Season 2, however, was because they were the only team to win twice in Season 1 and I wasn't sure if I was going to write a third season, so I didn't want there to be any teams that only won once.  I'm still not sure if I'll write Season 3, honestly.

With the Tournament, however, I'm focusing more on keeping things consistent.  This time, I'm looking back at the players' performances in their last appearances and trying to use that to determine which teams will come out on top.

GENERAL TRIVIA
-   Only two players have used the Secret Shafts— Tiffany, the second runner in "The Silver Angel Wing of Elizabeth I" (Season 1, Layout I), and Daron, the second runner in "The Secret Treasure of Phoolan Devi" (Season 2, Layout VI).  Robert from "The Silver Gauntlet of the Black Prince" (Season 2, Layout VII) also found a Secret Shaft, in the Crevasse, but that time it was locked.
-   All the Red Jaguar teams that made it to the Temple in Season 1 won 1½ Pendants in the Temple Games.
-   The shortest Moat on record— nine seconds— occurred in "The Revised Map of the New World" (Season 2, Layout IX).
-   The longest episode title to date is "The Cross-Sectioned Map of the Winchester Mystery House."
-   The average team took about 1.6 Pendants to the Temple.
-   The Green Monkeys were undefeated at the Temple Games in Season 1.
-   In each season, all but one team managed to successfully bring at least one artifact out of the temple within the three-minute time limit. In Season 1 the Green Monkeys went 0-for-3, while in Season 2 the Orange Iguanas put up a donut, going 0-for-8.
-   The only two episodes that feature four-way ties on the second-to-last Step of Knowledge are "The Holy Ankh of the Egyptian Deity" (Season 1, Layout III) and "The Missing Signature of George Washington" (Season 2, Layout VI).
-   Rooms that only contained one artifact included the Dungeon of the Lone Column, the Chamber of the Sacred Markers, the Tomb of the Headless Kings, the Chamber of Four Columns, the Forbidden Fountain, the Abandoned Cave, the Planetarium, the Geographer's Study, the Cathedral, the Lost Treasury and the Labyrinth. No artifacts were ever hidden in the Dark Forest.
-   Artifacts were occasionally hidden in a divided pit room (e.g. the Mine Shaft/the Bridge).  The first time this occurred was in "The Chalice of Vasco de Balboa" (Season 2, Layout VII).
-   The only Temple Layout to have each team go to the Temple at least once was Layout VII in Season 2.  It was also one of the few layouts to lack a one-Pendant Temple Run.
-   Rooms in which a Temple Guard was never encountered include the Dark Forest, the Dungeon of the Lone Column and the Chamber of Four Columns.  The only time a Temple Guard appeared in that room space in Season 1 was in "The Royal Crown of Louis the Fourteenth" (Layout IV).
-   The fastest victory was achieved in "The 96th Thesis of Martin Luther" (Season 2, Layout IX). Having taken a straight path to the artifact, the second runner, James, made it to the Thesis in the Dungeon and then escaped with 1:17 on the clock.
-   The quickest capture by three Temple Guards occurred in "The Wanted Poster of the Gentleman Bushranger" (Season 2, Layout VII). Because the follow-up runner Sara couldn't find the half Pendant in the Mine Shaft; the Silver Snakes' run ended in the Junction of the Secret Shafts with 1:45 left.
-   The only episodes of The Rediscovery in which a Temple Spirit stops the Temple Run are "The Iron Helmet of Rurik" (Season 2, Layout VI) and "The Magical Thread of Ariadne" (Season 2, Layout VIII).  In both cases, the capture took place in the Knights' Barracks.
-   The only Temple Run where the second Temple Guard ends the run is "Henrique Galvão and the Santa Maria" (Season 2, Layout VII).  The frontrunner, Danielle, lost her Pendant in the Crevasse and was taken out by the first guard in the Junction of the Secret Shafts.  The follow-up runner Adam didn't find her Pendant or the other half of his, so the second Temple Guard caught him in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey with 1:03 on the clock.
-   The record for the fastest assembly of the Silver Monkey is held by Derek from "The Tattered Battle Flag of General Cornwallis" (Season 2, Layout VI,) who completed it in twelve seconds.  The slowest successful assembly, on the other hand, was done by Jasmine from "The Chalice of Vasco de Balboa" (Season 2, Layout VII), who required 43 seconds.
-   Only two victories were achieved with but a single second left on the clock: "The Sheath of Pedro I of Brazil" (Season 2, Layout V) and "The Secret Treasure of Phoolan Devi" (Season 2, Layout VI).
-   The first solo Temple Run occurred in "The Feathered Headdress of Powhatan" (Season 1, Layout II). The Silver Snake, Tico, grabbed the Headdress in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey with 32 seconds left, but time ran out as he was leaving the Great Chasm. The first solo victory, however, did not occur until "Henry the Navigator's Missing Maps" (Season 1, Layout IV).
-   The only Temple Run in which no Temple Guards were encountered was "The Cork of Robert Hooke" (Season 2, Layout VI).  Because of the lack of Temple Guards, the result was a solo win recorded in just under two minutes.
-   The record for the most room objectives completed by a single player is ten, achieved in "The Tattered Battle Flag of General Cornwallis" (Season 2, Layout VI.) That same episode also holds the record for the least amount of time any player who entered the Temple spent in the Temple— the second player, Crystal, passed through the Temple Gate just as time expired.
-   The only episode where a player passes through all three doors leading left of the pit area is "The Missing Log Book of Tenzing Norgay" (Season 1, Layout I).
-   The longest completion of the Switch Inferno's objective occurred in "The Stained Coat of François l'Ollonais," (Season 2, Layout VI) and it was completed in no less than 64 seconds.  It can be assumed that this was the reason why the number of actuators in the room was reduced from twenty-four to twelve in Layout VII and onward.
-   The Dark Overlook objective was only completed in "The Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart" (Season 2, Layout VI) and "The Tattered Battle Flag of General Cornwallis" (Season 2, Layout VI).  The Planetarium objective was only completed in "The Smashed Spit of Roche Braziliano" (Season 2, Layout VII) and "The Spiritual Scroll of Akhenaten" (Season 2, Layout VII).
-   Every artifact hidden in the Junction of the Secret Shafts prior to "The Jeweled Lei of the Hawai?ian Queen" (Season 2, Layout VI) was successfully retrieved.
-   The frontrunner began in the Crypt in every Temple Run that contained it.
-   The only Temple Runs where the breakaway rock wall connecting the two leftmost rooms on the bottom floor does not break down are "The Lost Colony and the Croatoan Carving" (Season 2, Layout VIII) and "The Jeweled Calix of Nebuchadnezzar" (Season 2, Tournament of Champions Layout X).
-   The only Season 1 episode whose legend is devoid of quotations is "The Missing Log Book of Tenzing Norgay" (Layout I).  In Season 2, there are no quotations in the legends in "The Unlucky Necklace of Harmonia" (Layout V), "The Cork of Robert Hooke" (Layout VI), "The Helmet of Richard the Lion Heart" (Layout VI), "Rutherford's Gold Foil" (Layout VIII) and "The Lost Colony and the Croatoan Carving" (Layout VIII).
-   The legend in "The Sacred Quill of Quetzalcoatl" (Season 1, Layout III) included Olmec talking in the first person.  It was made to have him sound as if he knew Quetzalcoatl personally.
-   The smallest number of rooms entered in any Temple Run is four, occuring only in "The Wanted Poster of the Gentleman Bushranger" (Season 2, Layout VII).
-   The only Temple Runs where the direct path leads to the artifact are "The Blue Royal Gown of Catherine of Braganza" (Season 2, Layout VII), "The 96th Thesis of Martin Luther" (Season 2, Layout IX) and "The Silver Earring of Captain Kidd" (Season 2, Layout IX).  All three were Red Jaguars wins as well.
-   Two Moat rounds ended with a certain team combination before being corrected: "The Thorn Crown of Emperor Augustus" (Season 1, Layout II) and "Urashima Tar? and the Box of Lost Time" (Season 2, Layout VII).  In both cases the Green Monkeys were among the first four teams to complete the Moat, but didn't cross properly.  In both instances, the Steps match-up became Red-Blue-Orange-Purple, the Temple Games match-up would be Blue vs. Purple, and the team that replaced the Green Monkeys eventually made it to the Temple.
-   Two episodes were recorded in a certain Temple layout but featured a Temple Run in a later layout.  Both "The Chinese Emperor and the Great Wall" and "The Magical Thread of Ariadne" began in Season 2, Layout VII, but "The Magical Thread of Ariadne" had a Temple Run recorded in Layout VIII and "The Chinese Emperor and the Great Wall" finished out in Layout IX.
-   Only one player has ever entered all the rooms of a particular layout: Ryan, the second runner in "The Right Nostril of the Great Sphinx" (Season 1, Layout III). After grabbing the Nostril in the King's Storeroom, he descended into the Burial Pit, jumped down into the Great Chasm, entered the Ledges and then climbed up into the Vault to escape from the Temple and record the win with 5 seconds left.
-   The closest failed acquisition of an artifact occurred in "Helen of Troy's Mystical Mirror" (Season 1, Layout III). The second runner Ray slid down the Pharaoh's Secret Passage into the Quicksand Bog with 2 seconds left, but could not grab the Mirror in time.
-   A lot of Season 2 Temple Runs were partially or mostly voiced over, including: "The Unlucky Necklace of Harmonia" Layout V; "The Fabled Fortune-Telling Book of Tituba," "The Missing Signature of George Washington," "The Secret Journal of Niccolò Machiavelli" and "The Tattered Battle Flag of General Cornwallis" in Layout VI; "Henrique Galvão and the Santa Maria," "The Broken Flask of Louis Pasteur," "The Golden Grapes of Dionysus," "The Missing Card of Dmitri Mendeleev" and "The Silver Gauntlet of the Black Prince" for Layout VII; "The Bonnet of Mercy Otis Warren" for Layout VIII; and "Nero's Half-Burnt Toga," "The Cross-Sectioned Map of the Winchester Mystery House" and "The Golden Lighthouse of Demetrius of Pharos" for Layout IX.
-   The only Temple Runs where the three Temple Guards are in consecutive rooms are "The Jeweled Sword of Charlemagne" (Season 1, Layout IV) and "The Golden Grapes of Dionysus" (Season 2, Layout VII).  Coincidentally, both were Red Jaguars runs.

TOP TWENTY[-ONE] LEGENDS TEAMS
(Note: This was determined using The Mandarin Hand's scoring system.  There MAY be a little difference with one bit, however: I only deducted 15 points for an incorrect turn if a player met a dead end or ran into a room only to turn back before completing the objective, but not if players took a longer path that could still take them to the artifact.)

Kenneth Campbell and Kristen Thomas ("The Blue Royal Gown of Catherine of Braganza")

SECOND PLACE (131 points)
Ryan Tsao and Elizabeth da Conceicao ("The Right Nostril of the Great Sphinx")

FIRST PLACE (134 points)
James and Samantha ("The 96th Thesis of Martin Luther")

Season 3 definitely won't be coming for a while, if at all.  Hope that's not too much of a letdown. :P I still need to decide what I'll do, but in the meantime, I might post some interviews, update TRotAW or work on other projects, but no matter what I end up doing as far as The Rediscovery goes, I'll still be here. :)

So much for my theory that you started and ended with a win...

But yeah...you deserve a break from this stuff. Still, it's good to know that you plan on continuing it, and I await that day eagerly! :D

EDIT: Oh, and do you care if I post here what 16 teams I voted for in the Tournament of Champions?

Apparently I have more of a creative drive than I thought. I'm already just about set to begin the Season 3 dry run (the first production day that, depending on how long this takes, will determine whether or not I go through with writing a full third season).  Think of this post as a marker for when I started writing.

...And if I don't make a full season again, I might as well post the five episodes in the spring anyway, just marked as a sort of "Season 3 beta" or some such. :P

Status update:

It took me a while, but I finally finished the first production day of Season 3.  My plan right now is to see where I'm at with the series a month from now, when I'm out of college for the summer, and see if I can manage a full season in a reasonable amount of time.

Expect the first few episodes to drop in June or early July, even if I decide not to create a full third season? I don't want this work to completely go to waste. :P

Well, keep in mind that's just a tentative release date for the first production day, at the moment.  If I plan to do more than just the first few episodes, I might stop for another couple weeks so that I can write more. :P

Good news, everyone! [/prof farnsworth]

Expect new episodes REALLY soon.  I've been trying to think up a way to air the episodes in a timely manner, and I think I have a possible setup, just to test the waters.  The first production day of Season 3 will be posted one episode at a time, starting tonight and continuing over the next few Mondays.  Hopefully I'll be well ahead by then, so I can keep belting out new episodes at a regular pace.

And so, a new season calls for new Temple Layouts, wouldn't you agree? I'm only describing the first layout of Season 3 for now; I might or might not include more later.

The layout's rooms are, as usual, given in counterclockwise order.  Room changes from the Tournament of Champions layout in Season 2 (read: everything except for two rooms) are also indicated by bold text.

Season 3
Layout XI
The Room of the Ancient Masks? And so, the top entrance room returns to a typical upper-left room set up.  It's not much different from the Room of the Three Gargoyles.
The Pit of Despair? Despite being called the "Pit of Despair," this room doesn't quite resemble any of the other rooms by that name.  It's a bit more like the Pit of the Pendulum with thin side ledges on the left and right walls, but two catwalks connect the side ledges of the room.
The Observatory? A shout-out goes to TBK for this room, partly inspired by his Lookout Tower.  A telescope just in front of the ladder in the room has to be used to read writing off of the far wall above the audience, but the writing is actually a simple command that has to be followed rather than shouted out.  At the front of the room are two altars, each with three celestial models on top (on the left, Mercury, Venus and the Sun; on the right, the Moon, Saturn and Jupiter), and the objective involves these in some way.
The Central Dock? Two masts and a crow's nest are located around the room and must be placed in the ship just in front of the ladder leading downwards (it doesn't matter which mast the crow's nest rests on).
The Den of Totem Poles? Think the "stone column" Observatory from Season 2 of the original show, only doubled.  Two totem poles with three faces each are positioned on either side of the ladder leading downwards, and all six faces need to be turned toward the audience.
The Shrine of the Silver Monkey
The Pirate's Cove
The Graveyard of Ships? Two graves are positioned in the back of the room where the Temple Guard door would usually be.  In order to enter the Pirate's Cove or Shrine of the Silver Monkey, players have to step on the actuator in the correct grave... at the risk of being grabbed by a Temple Guard-possessed pirate buried in one of the graves.
The Viper's Nest? Almost the same as in the original show, but the third snake jar now hides a key rather than a snake that has to be pulled out.
The Bamboo Forest? Same as the original show, only with the "secret passages" concept added in.
The Lost Treasury? It should be noted that while most of the set has switched to much brighter lighting reminiscent of the original show's opening season, this particular room space in the temple remains very dim to create an atmosphere that matches many of the rooms in this space for Season 3.
The Cave

Legends: The Rediscovery
« Reply #104 on: June 14, 2010, 05:21:30 PM »
Well, onto this week's episode.  Can't say I'm as proud of this one considering the focal legend and all, but I did meet a creative drought and I decided to go ahead with it, hoping the change of central character would actually set it apart.

Looking at it, though, it's worse than simply choosing a central figure used in the show and coming up with a different legend, so since then, I've tried to replace the copy-episodes I didn't already get started on, although one or two may still remain besides this one? just as a warning. ^^;

EDIT: Another thing I'd like to mention is that I'm trying to experiment with making things easier to read? spacing portions out a bit more so they don't show up as blocky? but I'd love to have advice with what parts seem to be the most difficult to read because of the setup.  Feel free to comment on that here or in the episode threads.
