The Legend:
KIRK:
As the quest continues, it?s now time for Olmec to tell us about the Engine Cooling Fan of The Enola Gay. But pay attention, everyone. Because it will be your knowledge of the legend that will bring you one step closer to
Olmec?s Temple.
OLMEC:
The year was 1945. World War II had ended in Europe after the allied troops defeated the axis powers of Germany and Italy, and Europe was free of Nazi oppression. Unfortunately, the war was far from over. The third member of the Axis powers, Japan, was still strong, and had many factions throughout Asia and the Pacific nations. President Harry S Truman of America knew that if the allies were to win in Japan, they would need an advantage like none other in history. Fortunately, the world?s top scientists were working on just such a solution in a secret project known as The Manhattan Project.
TRUMAN:
Professor Einstein! How is work going on the ultimate weapon? We need this war to end soon before we lose any more soldiers.
EINSTEIN:
The work is nearly complete, and we should be ready within the week. The splitting of the atom shall be my life?s greatest achievement, as well as the shining moment in the lives of my fellow scientists.
TRUMAN:
What about that Oppenheimer fellow? He doesn?t look too happy?
EINSTEIN:
Just ignore him. He?s been a downer since day one. Something about misusing science for destructive purposes. But he?s a good worker, so I keep around, anyways.
OLMEC:
Dr. Oppenheimer was in fact upset that such a great scientific breakthrough was being used as a weapon, so much so, that he became a campaigner against its use. But that?s another story.
TRUMAN:
Gentlemen. You have served this country proud. The bells of freedom will ring and it?s all thanks to you and your atomic bomb. Now I just need to find someone brave enough to drop it?
OLMEC:
Truman called upon the American Air Force colonel Paul Tibbets and his B-29 bomber, The Enola Gay to fly over the nation of Japan and drop two atomic bombs on the cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
TRUMAN:
Now Tibbets, I?m not going to sugar coat this. You?ll be dropping the most powerful weapon in history onto the biggest enemy we?ve ever known. This thing has the power to destroy anything within twenty miles, and leave a trail of radiation for years.
TIBBETS:
Is that all? I thought you had a challenge for me Mr. President.
OLMEC:
Tibbets took off from the island of Guam in August 1945. He dropped the first atomic bomb named ?Little Boy? on the city of Hiroshima. Then he dropped a second named ?Fat Man? on Nagasaki. Seeing the amount of destruction, caused in just one day, Emperor Tojo of Japan soon after admitted defeat, leading the allied forces to victory in World War II.
TRUMAN:
Congratulations Tibbets, you?re an American hero. If it?s alright with you, I?d like to display your plane in a museum for everyone to see.
TIBBETS:
That?d be swell Mr. President. But if it?s alright with you, I?d like to keep a part of it to remember it by?
OLMEC:
Captain Tibbets had the engine removed from the plane, as it would never be flown again. The cooling fan to this engine was separated from the rest of it, and has found its way to the temple. Your quest is to find it, and bring it back here.
KIRK:
Thank you, Olmec. Where is the engine fan?
OLMEC:
The Engine Cooling Fan of The Enola Gay can be found in The Room of the Ancient Warriors.
The Steps of Knowledge:
KIRK:
Now Teams, you are standing atop the Steps of Knowledge. In a minute, Olmec will ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. If you?re first, I?ll call on you and you can answer the question. If you?re right, you?ll move down to the next step. If you?re wrong or run out of time, I?m going to give the other teams a chance to answer. The first two teams to make it to the bottom level (Kirk descends steps for emphasis) will be one step closer to Olmec?s Temple. Olmec, if you?re ready, please give us the first question.
