Legends of the Hidden Temple: Unearthed
« on: June 20, 2013, 09:20:31 AM »
For a while now, I've been considering making a fanfic series of my own, with the desire growing after I participated in the "Make Your Own Episode" thread. Finally, I caved and starting searching for eligible artifacts that I could use. Of course, I still wasn't sure if I should go on with this. With some encouragement from my friend, however, I finally decided to go through with it. Welcome, everyone, to Legends of the Hidden Temple: Unearthed.

Before I start, however, I feel that I ought to share the artifacts, the Temple Layouts, and a few notes with you...that, and I'm still in the process of finalizing a lot of things, so I can't start right away.

Above is a guide to the rooms. I decided to go counterclockwise, starting with the upper entrance room and ending with the lower one. You probably noticed that I didn't label the Pharaoh's Secret Passage area. Honestly, I don't really consider this a room, just a different method to get from room to room, but with a name instead of simply being called a slide. Besides, Room 8 has an objective now, so there isn't an actuator by the passage's door, but I'll get to that in a moment.

Season 1
In total, Season 1 uses six layouts.

Layout 1
1. The Crypt: Same as it was in the past two seasons.
2. The Overgrown Pit: Vines have swarmed across the floor and have overtaken a good chunk of the Pit; if one looks closely, you can see the pendulum from Season 3's "The Pit and the Pendulum" ensnared by them. From here, players can choose to go to the Lair of the Butterfly, the Heart Room, or the Eclipsed Light Room.
3. The Eclipsed Light Room: A black orb sits on a gray pedestal near the center of the room, and behind it are three panels. One of them has a light bouncing off of it. Players must adjust the panel so that the light hits the black orb in order to move on. The back wall is colored a dark blue, with many small, white dots on it, as if it's supposed to resemble the night sky.
4. The Heart Room (Unearthed): In the past, all you had to do was hit an actuator to move on. Not quite the case here. The room is almost entirely pitch black, save for a few light sources. In front of the room are two levers. The player must turn them at the same time, for a total of three times, in order to light the room back up. Right before the light returns, the center of the wall will glow a faint red, and a heartbeat noise will start to play. Due to safety concerns, Temple Guards won't appear until after the objective is completed, when the lights return (imagine a kid afraid of the dark encountering a Temple Guard while there wasn't any light...not a smart idea). Aside from the changes made above, the room retains its original design.
5. The Room of the Ancient Warriors: Same as Season 3.
6. Shrine of the Decayed Monkey: This room has seen better days. The monkey statue is a shadow of its former self, and it looks like it might fall apart at any moment. However, it should be good for a few more runs. The objective is the same as the past seasons; just put together the monkey to move on.
7. The Lightning Room: Same as it was in Season 2, though with the removal of the elevator, the objective has to be completed to move on.
8. The Chamber of Dry Waters: This room is a far cry from its predecessors, in that there's an objective you have to complete if you enter from Room 9. There are three chains, each on a different wall. In order to open the doors, the player has to yank on the correct chain, which will release a waterfall from an opening on the left wall. If entering from the Lightning Room, though, all you have to do is bust down the stone wall. The room itself is colored similarly to the Well from Season 1, though dark blue patches can be seen on the wall.
9. The Dark Forest: Same as before, though the arms of the trees are longer and more brittle.
10. The Murky Swamp: Same as "The Treacherous Swamp" back in Season 2, though with more vines hanging from the walls and on the ground, which can trip players up. The back wall is colored a dark green, while the foam pellets used are a mix of dark and forest green, probably to resemble the water.
11. The Lair of the Butterfly: This room has the same lighting as the Tomb of the Headless Kings, aside from two lights hanging on the back wall, separated by the Temple Guard door. Below those lights are open display cases, each with three large butterflies in them. A third display case is in the front of the room, presumably for an artifact that may be housed there. A butterfly statue, whose design is based on the Owl Butterfly, is placed on an outcropping that covers part of the ladder leading to the Heart Room. The player must grab the butterflies and rip their wings off. When they finish, they can move on; the butterfly statue will ominously glow blue to signify the completion of the room's objective.
12. The Moss Cavern: Pretty much the same as the Ledges, but moss has been growing throughout, hence the name change.

Layout 2
1. The Crypt
2. The Overgrown Pit/Rickety Bridge: A bridge has been added in order to gain access to the Eclipsed Light Room; the entrance to the Heart Room is blocked by a pole. These poles have been planted on the outcroppings, making the choice to go through the top or bottom paths essential. Down in the pit, the vines seem to be getting worse, as they're now emerging from the holes on the wall.
3. The Eclipsed Light Room
4. The Heart Room (Unearthed)
5. The Tomb of the Pharaoh: The room is decorated like an Egyptian tomb. In the center of the room is a sarcophagus, and scattered about are three items (two staffs and a decoration for the headdress) needed for it. The player must gather them and place them on the sarcophagus, but be careful! A Temple Guard may emerge from the sarcophagus.
6. Shrine of the Silver Monkey: The monkey has been rebuilt, and now looks like its former self again.
7. The Room of the Ancestral Mask: Three mannequin heads are sitting on platforms across the room, and in front of them is a mask. The player has to place it on the correct head in order to move on. This room retains the dark coloration its previous room had.
8. The Chamber of Dry Waters
9. The Dark Forest
10. The Murky Swamp
11. The Lair of the Butterfly
12. The Moss Cavern

Layout 3
1. The Crypt
2. The Pit of Despair/Rickety Bridge: The vines have finally been cut away, and the Pit is back to its former self, with the exception of the marks on the wall made by whatever was used to cut the vines away. Although the Pit uses the same blocks as the Pit and the Pendulum, the pendulum itself has been removed. The bridge is still standing.
3. The Eclipsed Light Room (V2): The objective has been changed a bit. Instead of one black orb and three panels, this room has three black orbs and one panel. The orbs can be moved around, and one of them contains a light within. To reveal this light, the orb must be turned until it is exposed via a hole on the black cover.
4. The Heart Room (Unearthed)
5. The Tomb of the Pharaoh
6. Shrine of the Silver Monkey
7. The Room of the Ancestral Mask
8. The Chamber of Dry Mists: The waterfall has disappeared, and in its place is a clear mist. Like in the Chamber of Dry Waters, players have to pull on the right chain to release the mists. If they came here from the Room of the Ancestral Mask, all they have to do is bust through the wall. The room's colors are a bit darker than they were before.
9. The Dark Forest
10. The Crystalline Lake: In place of the vines are large crystals that obstruct the player's path. They must maneuver through them in order to reach the next room. The pellets are a light blue, and the wall is a mix of blue and green.
11. The Lair of the Butterfly
12. The Moss Cavern

Layout 4
1. The Crypt
2. The Pit of Despair: The bridge has been removed, though most of the outcroppings remain; the central one was destroyed along with the bridge. A rope has been added to help players get across.
3. The Prisoner's Tower: In the front of the room are three jars, and in the back is a cage with 'someone' (actually a dummy) stored inside. The player has to open the jars and find a key to release the prisoner in order to move on. The night sky appearance that the Eclipsed Light Room had has been replaced with dark gray, as if to resemble a prison.
4. The Room of Eternal Melody: Three instruments (a flute, a clarinet, and a trumpet) are strewn across the room, and in the front are a pair of hands. The player must place the correct instrument on the hands to move on; to signify this, music will begin to play (usually the first three notes of the Temple Run music). The room is a mix of gray and white.
5. The Tomb of the Pharaoh
6. Shrine of the Silver Monkey
7. The Lightning Room
8. The Chamber of Dry Mists
9. The Dark Forest
10. The Crystalline Lake
11. The Abyssal Ruin: In this room are four chests, with a fifth one sitting in a skeleton's lap on a chair by the ladder. The player has to go through the four chests until he finds a key, which will open the one with the skeleton. The room has dark blue lighting to make it resemble the ocean depths, and it's been said that the previous room, the Lair of the Butterfly, somehow created this room.
12. The Moss Cavern

Layout 5
1. The Crypt
2. The Pit of Despair
3. The Prisoner's Tower
4. The Room of Eternal Melody
5. The Hall of Memories: In the front of the room is a basket with the player's team insignia on it, and behind them are three artifacts, of which one of them was once sought after by their team. These artifacts are ones that were never retrieved from the Temple; artifacts that were at least grabbed before time ran out are exempt from this. The player must put the correct artifact in the basket to move on. The room has a light brown background, with two green doors for the Temple Guards to come out of, making it look similar to a room that came out of Season 1.
6. Shrine of the Silver Monkey
7. The Room of the Secret Password: Same as before.
8. The Chamber of Dry Mists
9. The Dark Forest
10. The Crystalline Lake
11. The Abyssal Ruin
12. The Moss Cavern

Layout 6
1. The Crypt
2. The Pit of Despair
3. The Prisoner's Tower
4. The Room of Eternal Melody
5. The Hall of Memories
6. Shrine of the Silver Monkey
7. The Artist's Studio: Scattered about the walls of the room are paintings made by various artists, and a canvas in the front. Players have to place the correct painting on the canvas in order to move on. The room is splashed with various colors of paint, and a few sheets of paper are on the walls and the floor.
8. The Chamber of Dry Mists
9. The Graverobber's Haunt: In this room are three coffins, each containing a skeleton. One of these skeletons is holding a key to the next room. Be careful, though! One of these coffins may contain an angry Temple Guard who will think you're the graverobber. Give him a Pendant to keep him at bay, or 'take his place in the coffin', as Kirk would call it. The room is decorated with piles of dirt, a tombstone by the coffin lying on the ground, and a bag filled with valuables.
10. The Crystalline Lake
11. The Abyssal Ruin
12. The Moss Cavern

And now, for the episodes. I checked as much as I could to make sure I didn't duplicate anyone's, but there's a likely chance I missed someplace where I could have looked. I really hope I didn't steal anyone's artifact, but if I did, please let me know right away.

Trivia:
 - The Temple, at first, has a theme of decay to it, in order to imply that it hasn't been used in quite some time.
 - The year has been set! This will take place in 2002, and the prizes will reflect that time frame.
 - The episodes above were not in that order when I wrote them down. What I did was, soon after I finished, put them in a Random Sequence Generator. The result is the episode list you see above; for example, the Unscathed Lyre of Emperor Nero was number 16 on my list, but it wound up being the last episode of Season 1!
 - In addition, some of the artifacts didn't make the final cut. For example, one of the artifacts was "The Razor Blade of Vincent van Gogh", but I became concerned about it due to its dark nature, so it was swapped out for "The Unfinished Painting of Georges Seurat". As much as I want to do something on Vincent van Gogh, the razor blade he held towards his friend might be pushing it a bit. Though considering how dark Legends could get, maybe the artifact would fit in with it, so there's a possibility of it popping up in Season 2.
 - Some of these artifacts were...interesting to find out about. To me, the most outrageous of these would probably be Marie Antoinette's hair boat.
 - The beta title of this was Legends of the Hidden Temple: Echoes. This was scrapped because while the title sounded cool, it was also a bit silly. And I'm pretty sure I was thinking of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes when I thought of this. >_>
 - The Lair of the Butterfly (and, by extension, the Abyssal Ruin) was meant to be a reference to the 'butterfly effect' theory.

And that's about it! If all goes well, the first episode should be up next Thursday, hopefully not early in the morning when I should be asleep. I'll be updating this quite a bit, so be sure to check back often!

Agreed. Especially the fanfic section has been dead in the Legends fandom for months.

And I love your idea of The Heart Room.

Okay, episode 3 should be coming up either tonight or tomorrow. Also, small update: the Hall of Memories room has received a makeover. Originally, it was supposed to look like the Room of the Ancient Warriors, but this was nixed because the Temple Guard encounters would look awkward. Instead, I decided to go for something that looked like it came out of Season 1, since this room's got to do with the show's past.
