Episodes that get a bad reputation?
« on: January 06, 2013, 11:32:45 PM »
There are quite a few episodes people tend to make out to be worser than what they really are. What are some episodes that get a bad reputation?

I have to say the first one that comes to mind is "The Lost Whale Bone of Pytheas". We all know how slow Brittany and Damien were in the temple, but they weren't a bad team at all. Just very slow (mostly Damien too). They were a slow team, but certainly not a bad team. They didn't really make any stupid mistakes and they still finished one room away from a center of the temple artifact. Its no a run that I will go back and watch right away, but it is not a total disaster as some people make it out to be.

Another one is "Pecos Bill's Lost Lariat". Yes, Chris was a moron and he is the reason why the team lost. But the whole run was pretty exciting and it still came down to a close loss. I always enjoyed this loss despite the disappointing ending.

Don't we already have a thread on this?

Anyways, "The Melted Head of Madame Tussaud" gets a bad rap here. Jennifer is not the horrible person people make her out to be. So she was overexcited, so she shouted at Nicholas. Quite frankly, Nicholas deserved it. He was WAY too slow and hesitant in the temple. And I think Jennifer pulled her weight just fine. She only had 40 seconds, you can't expect her to reach the artifact and win in that short time. Plus, she almost assembled the monkey in time, making it one room ahead of her partner. Jennifer is not comparable to Dana and Lauren, where the latter two made NO progress in what little time they had remaining. The temple run was unexciting sure, but it isn't as terrible as it's made out to be.

From what I can gather, some people believe that Tiffani's performance in the "Much-Heralded Helmet of Sir Gawain," despite it being a solo victory, was lackluster. I would have to disagree. Yes, Tiffani was a little slower than some other Season 3 contestants, and yes, she didn't encounter any temple guards. However, she had a strong performance in that she got back to the platform in the Pit, and she knew to take the shortcut straight to the Dark Forest. I also give her credit for dragging the Helmet through the Pit and Ledges. That could not have been easy.

Yeah, we do have another thread that talks about players getting bad reputations. But I was thinking more along the lines about an episode in general that gets a bad reputation. ;)

With that being said, I agree about the "Madame Tussaud" episode. I don't see how Jennifer can be even compared to Dana and Lauren when she actually did something in the temple. She hardly had any time to herself and the time she did have, she was still able to make some progress with it. She even avoided the whole central shaft and almost completed the Silver Monkey before time was up. Nicholas was the reason this team lost. And I don't consider this episode to be a total disaster either. I will watch this run anyday over "Smashed Printing Plate" and "William Tell". The Orange Iguanas still made it far despite the time Nicholas wasted.

And I also agree with Tiffani from "Sir Gawain". I don't see how anyone can say that Tiffani's performance was lackluster. Its not like she had to hit a bunch of actuators or looked lost in the temple. She was just slow and her temple guard layout was very kind towards her. But she still did a solid job in the temple and that includes making it back to the platform (which only happened four times in S3) and used her shortcuts. Plus, she did a decent job bringing out that huge Helmet out of he temple. Its definitely not the most exciting run, but she still did a solid job.

And one more I want to add is "The Golden Pepperoni of Catherine de' Medici". I don't if it is just me, but this is another episode that people make out to worst than what it really is. People make it seem like its a bottom 10 episode, but it really is not that bad. Yeah, we all know what Aqila did in the Room of the Secret Password. But the Purple Parrots still made it far in the temple and the ending is rather memorable. Even the whole episode is really good, minus the goofy legend.

Yeah, Golden Pepperoni is not a terrible episode at all. Sure, Aqila was slow and went past the artifact, but she still made pretty far despite all that. Some people on YouTube call it "the worst temple run ever." These people obviously haven't seen Cricket Cage to reach that kind of conclusion.

I agree that the "Golden Pepperoni of Catherine de Medici" is not a bad episode at all.

Another episode that seems to fall by the wayside is the "Thornwood Gavel of Judge Roy Bean." The Moat crossing was creative and competitive, the Steps of Knowledge were a double sweep, and the Orange Iguanas swept the unique sequence of temple games. Mike's portion of the temple run was very successful; he cleared all the way to the Room of the Secret Password and had one of the fastest completions of the Silver Monkey in the whole show. And when he was taken out of the temple, he left Kelli with 1:15 on the clock. Even though Kelli's detour into the King's Storeroom was not the best decision, it made this run even more memorable.

I can't believe anyone would say the Judge Roy Bean episode is bad. Before I reviewed that episode a month ago, it was a long time since I saw the whole episode. But I don't recall any bad rounds from the episode. The legend was pretty interesting, the temple games used a very unique sequence and set of temple games, and the temple run is not that big of a disaster. Mike was great and the team still made it far despite Kelli's mistakes.

Why do people think The Belly Button of Buddha is bad?

Jennifer may not be the fastest or the smartest. But she got all the way to the Belly Button and won. Sure the Temple favored her with the Guard placement and all. But a win is a win.

Another temple run I thought got undeserved hate is "The Upside Down Compass of Henry Hudson." Everyone seems to think it's a bottom 10 run, but I didn't think it was that bad at all. Sure, the players were slow, but they still made it pretty far with the tough layout they had. Plus, I don't think they missed shortcuts at all. None of the doors in the Chamber opened until after Sherra completed the objective. It certainly wasn't the most exciting run ever, but it wasn't terrible at all.

While I don't mind the run either, I suppose some people wouldn't like this run because it didn't seem like the team made that much progress in the temple. Sherra went into the Crypt and the King's Storeroom, even though both were unnecessary rooms, and then Derek did not utilize the opened door leading straight from the Pit to the Chamber. And who could forget how he dropped the monkey in the last seconds of the run? I happen to find this run memorable because of the incredibly unusual path and series of opening doors, but some people may not agree.

I don't really see what is wrong with the Buddha win either. Its not very exciting, but it is better than half of the wins on the show IMO. If Jennifer moved at the same pace as when she exited the temple, the win would've been more exciting. But it is much better than Shaka Zulu, Geronimo, Butch Cassidy, and any other lame win I am forgetting.

And I agree with the "Henry Hudson" temple run too. I don't see how this is bad run at all. They weren't bad players at all, just really slow. And the temple run is kind of boring. But it was a tough layout and Derek and Sherra still made it far. I remember people like outer space giving Sherra crap for taking the direct path when it was obvious she had no choice but to go down into the Tomb of the Headless Kings. And its funny how people like to pick on this temple run, but say nothing about "The Lion-Slashed Jacket of Sacagawea". That temple run had an almost identical layout with slow players also. But no one ever seems to pick on Lauren and Mike.
