Episode 59: The Mysterious Material of the Roswell Object

The camera winds and twists its way through a thick jungle of strange and exotic plants.  After a few wrong turns, it finally stops in front of an ancient Mayan temple.  At the base of the temple, a giant stone head sits.  Suddenly, a torch on either side of the head begins burning.  The head’s eyes light up, and it begins to speak:

Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth!”  The words appear on the screen, along with a picture of a Pendant of Life.  “With your guide, Kirk Fogg!  And here he is now!”

As the Pendant of Life shatters, the camera cuts to a middle-aged man wearing a denim shirt and blue jeans riding in on an ATV.  He dismounts the vehicle and runs up the Steps of Knowledge, microphone in hand.

“Thank you!  Thank you very much!  Nice to see everyone!  Nice to see you, Olmec!  Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth.  The rooms are filled with lost treasures protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legends behind each of these all-new treasures in his Temple…which one are we gonna hear about today?”

“The legend of the Mysterious Material of the Roswell Object,” Olmec replies.

“Ah, the Mysterious Material of the Roswell Object,” Kirk repeats.  “Well, the legend is set, and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the Mysterious Material—will it be:

“The Red Jaguars?”  The camera zooms in on each team as they are introduced.
“The Blue Barracudas?
“The Green Monkeys?
“The Orange Iguanas?
“The Purple Parrots?
“Or the Silver Snakes?

“They’re gonna have to pass some pretty tough tests, but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec’s Temple.  But first, we’ve got to get across the Moat, and Olmec will tell us how it has to be done today…”

Olmec begins to explain the Moat crossing:
“Before you are three rods which stretch the entire length of the Moat.  When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will jump into the water and wade out to the first rod.  Then, lean backwards and walk forward until you pass under the rod.  Once you’ve passed under the first rod, wade out to the second one and do the same.  Both players must cross in this way; but if you touch the rod with any part of your body, you must go back and start all over again.  Once both players reach the other side, run over and hit the gong.”  Kirk hits the Silver Snakes’ gong to demonstrate.  “The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round!”

“All right, let’s get started,” says Kirk.  “Teams, are you ready?”
All six teams shout and cheer as a response.
“Olmec, are you ready?” asks Kirk.
“Take me to your leader, Kirk-ling,” Olmec replies in a nasally, alien-like voice.
“Take you…” Kirk spits out before laughing heavily out loud.  “Okay…teams, get set, GO!”

“There they go, toward the first pole!” says Kirk as the first members of each team (the girls for the Red Jaguars and Purple Parrots; the boys for all other teams) step into the Moat and wade out to the first pole.  Once there, they all bend over backwards, limbo-style, and attempt to make it under the pole.  Since the first pole is about two feet higher than the Moat’s water level, they all pass under it with little trouble, and proceed toward the next pole.  “They made it under the first one, but they’ve got two more to go!” says Kirk.  All the teams proceed to the second pole, which is about six inches lower than the first one.  Everyone bends back and successfully passes underneath the pole except the Blue Barracudas’ boy, who falls backwards into the water.  “Oh, Blue Barracudas have to go back—everyone else looking good, though!” narrates Kirk as the five teams come to the last pole, which is only a foot above the water.  All the contestants now struggle to make it under the pole, and two of the players either touch it or lose their balance.  The Red Jaguars, Silver Snakes and Orange Iguanas make it, though, and their partners now begin to cross.  Meanwhile, the Blue Barracudas’ boy is to the second pole again, and he makes it this time.  The Red Jaguars’ girl and Silver Snakes’ and Orange Iguanas’ boys make it under the first pole and head to the second one as the Blue Barracudas’ boy barely squeezes himself under the last pole to make it across, signaling for his partner to cross now.  The Green Monkeys’ boy also makes it under the last pole on his second try, and his partner also steps into the Moat to begin crossing.  “We’ve got some tough teams today, but we can only take four to the Steps of Knowledge,” says Kirk as the Purple Parrots’ girl finally makes it across on her second try.  The Silver Snakes and Red Jaguars’ second players have each made it across now, and they scramble out of the Moat to hit their gongs.  “Oh, we’ve got two teams now—we might have three very soon!” Kirk narrates as the Orange Iguanas’ boy climbs out of the Moat, rushes over and hits his team’s gong.  “There’s three; now we need one more!” says Kirk.  The Blue Barracudas’ girl touches the third pole on her way across the Moat, and the Purple Parrots’ boy falls while trying to make it under the same pole; however, the Silver Snakes’ girl just barely squeezes under the pole and reaches the other side.  She climbs out of the Moat, and she and her partner hit their gong to end the Moat crossing.

“That’s it—we’ve got our four teams,” says Kirk as he runs over and stands next to the Silver Snakes.  “Silver Snakes did it—going on to the Steps of Knowledge will be the mighty Silver Snakes…and the tenacious Orange Iguanas…” Kirk pauses between each team’s name to allow for applause.  “…and the Green Monkeys…and the Red Jaguars!  The Blue Barracudas and the, uh…Purple Parrots were great, too; they’re not going home empty-handed.  We’ve got a great gift for ‘em, and here’s what it is!”  They receive a $50 gift card from FYE.

Kirk and the four remaining teams are now standing atop the Steps of Knowledge.  “As the quest continues, it’s now time for Olmec to tell us about the Mysterious Material of the Roswell Object.  But teams, pay attention, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you a step closer to Olmec’s Temple…”

Olmec begins to tell the story:
“The date was July 18th, 1947.  The place was Roswell, a small, otherwise normal town in the remote deserts of New Mexico.  Everything was calm until that night, when a mysterious flying object crashed on the outskirts of town.  A local rancher who witnessed the crash immediately called the sheriff to report what he saw.
“‘I tell you, I saw something go down over by the Jenkins’ place!’
“The sheriff promptly reported this to a nearby military airbase, which sent out a team to investigate the strange wreckage.  When the team arrived, they discovered that whatever had crashed had mysteriously disappeared.  The only remains were several pieces of shiny, silver, plastic-like material.  The team took the material to the nearby airbase, where it was tested.  However, it could not be identified.
“‘Sir, I’ve never seen anything like this before,’ said one soldier to his general.  ‘What do you think it is?’
“‘Soldier, I want you to forget everything you saw here today,’ replied the general.
“The very next day, the military denied everything that they had seen, claiming that the material came from a weather balloon.  However, many people have speculated that the strange material actually came from a real alien spacecraft.  Roswell has since been dubbed ‘The Alien Capital of the World’.  The material from the original crash disappeared as mysteriously as it appeared—except for one piece, which somehow has found its way to the Temple.  Your quest is to myster—retrieve the Mysterious Material of the Roswell Object and bring it back here.”

“Ooh, sounds spooky,” says Kirk.  “Tell us, Olmec, where is the Mysterious Material?”

“The Mysterious Material of the Roswell Object can be found…in the Lookout Tower,” Olmec replies.  The camera zooms in on a medium-sized scrap of silver-colored material on top of the telescope in the room, and then cuts back to Kirk.

“All right,” Kirk responds.  “Teams, you are now standing on The Steps of Knowledge.  In a moment, Olmec’s gonna ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you’re right, you can move down to the next level, but if you’re wrong or you run out of time, the other teams will get a chance.”  Kirk begins descending the Steps.  “The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec’s Temple.  Olmec, we’re now ready for your first question.”

Olmec begins:
“Is Roswell located in: New Jersey, New Mexico, or New York?”
The Red Jaguars ring in.  “New Mexico.”
“That is correct,” says Olmec.  The Red Jaguars proceed to the second step.
“Step down, Red Jaguars,” says Kirk.  “Next question, Olmec.”

“According to our legend, who saw an object crash outside Roswell—”
The Green Monkeys ring in.  “A…UFO?”
“That is not one of our three choices,” Olmec replies.  “The three choices are: a jogger, a biker, or a dog?”
After a few seconds, the Silver Snakes ring in.  “A jogger?”
“That is correct,” replies Olmec.  The Silver Snakes step to the second level.
“Step down, Silver Snakes,” says Kirk.  “Next question, please.”

“Who did the rancher call to report the crash: the sheriff, the newspaper, or his girlfriend?”
The Green Monkeys ring in.  “The…sheriff?”
“That is correct,” Olmec says.  The Green Monkeys join the Red Jaguars and Silver Snakes on the second step.
“Green Monkeys step down now,” says Kirk.  “This is getting exciting…next question.”

“What did the military find at the crash site: an alien, an injured pilot, or strange silver material?”
The Red Jaguars ring in.  “The, uh…silver stuff from the, uh…UFO…?”
“That…is correct,” Olmec replies.  The Red Jaguars descend to the next-to-last step.
“Red Jaguars now just one step away from the Temple Games,” observes Kirk.  “But remember, we need two teams…next question, Olmec.”

“What did the military claim the material came from: an airplane, a weather balloon, or—”
The Orange Iguanas ring in before the third choice is given.  “A weather balloon?”
“That is correct,” Olmec says.  The Orange Iguanas proceed to the second step.
“Orange Iguanas are on the board now,” says Kirk.  “It’s still anybody’s game—next question.”

“What do the letters ‘UFO’ stand for—”
The Silver Snakes ring in early.  “Um…unidenim—unidentified flying object.”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies.  The Silver Snakes step down to the next-to-last level.
“Now it’s the Silver Snakes who are just one step away,” says Kirk.  “We still need two teams…next question, please.”

“Which of these is another common term for a UFO: gliding plate, flying saucer, or soaring—”
The Red Jaguars ring in as Olmec is giving the last choice.  “A flying saucer.”
That is correct!” booms Olmec, and the Red Jaguars jump to the bottom step.
“The Red Jaguars are our first team for the Temple Games!” observes Kirk.  “We need one more team, though—who’s it gonna be?  Olmec, next question.”

“Which of these words means ‘from outer space’: extracurricular, extraterrestrial, or extraterritorial?
The Silver Snakes ring in.  “Extraturret—terrestrial?”
“That…is correct!” Olmec says, and the Silver Snakes join the Red Jaguars on the bottom step.

“And we have our two teams for the Temple Games!” says Kirk as he rushes over and stands between them.  “They are the Red Jaguars, and the Silver Snakes!  Green Monkeys and Orange Iguanas, you guys did great; come down here—we’re not sending you home empty-handed.  We’ve got a great gift for you, too, and here’s what it is!”  They receive Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules on DVD.

Kirk is now seen standing between the two advancing teams.  “These two teams will be playing for the right to enter Olmec’s Temple, right after this!”

The camera flies above Kirk and the two teams and zooms in on the Silver Snakes’ torch on the near side of the Moat before the title appears onscreen, and we go to a commercial.

We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the two remaining teams.

“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says.  “Now is the time that the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, but first, I wanna meet our teams…”

Kirk first turns to the Red Jaguars, who are made up of a tall brown-eyed girl with long, straight blonde hair and an equally tall blue-eyed boy with messy brown hair.
“First, on the Red Jaguars, we have Amanda.  How old are you, Amanda?”
“Thirteen,” she replies.
“And…it says here you like playing softball, but you’re also into drama…tell us a little about that.”
“Um…I started acting in, like, plays and things when I was about six,” says Amanda.  “I’ve taken a few classes and things on it, and…I really like it.”
“All right, sounds neat,” says Kirk as he turned to Amanda’s male teammate.  “And over here, your partner is Paul.  How old are you?”
“Twelve,” he says.
“And your card says you play basketball, but you also want to be a zoologist…so you like animals, I take it?”
“Yeah, um…I’ve got a bunch of pets at home,” says Paul, “and…I’ve always liked takin’ care of animals, so…I think it might be cool to do that for a living.”
“We’ve got an aspiring actress and an aspiring animal-man,” says Kirk.  “Let’s hear it for the Red Jaguars!”  Paul and Amanda clap along with the audience as they applaud.

Kirk now turns to the Silver Snakes, who are made up of an average-height blue-eyed girl with long, frizzy brown hair and a slightly taller African-American boy with curly, dark brown hair.
“And on the Silver Snakes, we have Leah.  Hold—how old are you?”
“Thirteen,” replies Leah.
“And, um…it says here that you’re a cheerleader, but you also have a pretty unique nickname…what is that?”
“Uh…‘Stinky’…” Leah replies, giggling.
“Why do they call you ‘Stinky’?” asks Kirk.
“Well…it’s kind of a long story, about something I did at school…in front of the whole class…” Leah says, giggling and blushing.
“Ha, ha—okay, fair enough,” laughs Kirk before he turns to Leah’s teammate.  “And here we have Jackson.  How old are you, Jackson?”
“Fourteen,” he responds.
“And here it says that you like basketball, and ‘parkour’.  What exactly is ‘parkour’?”
“Um, it’s basically where you take your—the stuff around you, and…basically run and bounce off the walls and rocks and things,” says Jackson.  “It’s really good exercise.”
“Bouncing off walls, huh?” asks Kirk.  “Do your parents know you do that?”
“Yeah,” laughs Jackson.
“Well, oka—” Kirk begins, but Jackson starts to speak again:
“Who you…who do you think I’m running from?” he quips.
Kirk begins to laugh heavily, as does the audience.  “Well, you won’t have much to run from in these Temple Games…let’s hear it for the Silver Snakes!”  Jackson and Leah clap along with the applauding audience.

“All right, are you all ready to play?” Kirk asks.

“Yeah!” the players reply.

“Okay, go get ready for the Temple Games,” he says.  “Now, the teams are gonna be competing for…”  Kirk retrieves a Pendant of Life from the pouch at his side and holds it up to the camera. “…Pendants of Life.  Our winning team will need those Pendants to protect them from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through Olmec’s Temple.  There are three Temple Games—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #1…”

The black lights and torches under Olmec come on and he begins to explain the first Game:
“Though it hasn’t been proven, many people still believe that an alien craft landed at Roswell in 1947.  Aside from the strange material, however, nothing was ever found.  In this game, you’ll be searching for evidence of UFO’s.  When Kirk gives the signal, crawl out to the first pile of sand and begin to dig through it with your hands.  If you find a miniature UFO there, come back and place it in your bin.  Then, crawl out to the next pile of sand and start digging for the next tiny UFO.  The first player to find all four UFO’s, or…the player who finds the most UFO’s in sixty seconds…wins.”

“Alright, time to find some alien life,” says Kirk.  “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock, please!”  The clock slams down in the bottom-right hand corner of the screen with a loud crash.  “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Leah and Amanda both crawl out to their first miniature sandbox and begin sorting through it with their hands.  They both find a small toy UFO buried in the sand at about the same time, and both bring it back with about 50 seconds left.  Both girls move on to their second, slightly larger sandbox, where Amanda lucks out by finding a toy UFO almost immediately—she brings it back with 44 seconds on the clock.  As Amanda moves on to her third, much bigger sand pile, Leah continues sorting through her second one until about halfway through the game, when she finds her second UFO and brings it back with 27 seconds left.  Amanda is still digging in her third sand pile when Leah comes up and starts digging through hers as well.  Several seconds tick by until about ten seconds remain, when Amanda finds a third toy UFO and brings it back.  Leah frantically digs for the last few seconds as Amanda moves on to her fourth and final gigantic sand pile.  With about three seconds left, Leah finds a UFO, but time expires before she can reach her bin with it.

“All right, stop right there!” says Kirk as he runs back onscreen.  “Stop digging—these two are digging machines here!  Let’s come over here and see how we did…”  A spotter brings both bins over to Kirk, and he kneels beside them.  “Red Jaguars got one, two…three UFO’s.  And the Silver Snakes got one…two UFO’s!  That gives the Red Jaguars the half Pendant of Life!”  The audience applauds briefly.  “Silver Snakes did great, but they can catch up in this next game.  It’s worth a half Pendant—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2…”

Olmec begins:
“After July 18th, 1947, many people claimed to see several more objects flying in the skies over Roswell.  In this game, you’ll be recreating what some people may have seen.  When Kirk gives the signal, grab a UFO, jump up, and stick it on the ceiling above you.  Then come back down and grab another UFO.  The first player to hang all their UFO’s, or…the player who’s hung the most at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”

“Strange skies above,” says Kirk.  “Well, maybe not…let’s set the clock for sixty seconds!”  The clock slams down in the corner, ready to go.  “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Both Paul and Jackson, suspended from bungee cords, drop down and grab a silver disc suspended from a string.  They then jump up to the ceiling with the intention to hang it, but Paul doesn’t jump high enough, and only Jackson hangs a flying saucer from the ceiling above him at the 52-second mark.  Jackson drops down to get another one as Paul manages to jump high enough to stick his first UFO on the ceiling with 47 seconds left.  Paul has a little trouble jumping up high enough to reach the ceiling, allowing Jackson to place about two more UFO’s than he does about three-fourths of the way through the game.  Jackson mistimes a jump with about ten seconds left, allowing Paul to bridge the gap a bit.  However, he can’t catch up completely, as time expires soon afterward.

“Okay, that’s it!” says Kirk as he walks back onscreen.  “That’s it; come on down here, guys.  Great match—let’s see how many they got.”  Kirk looks up to the ceilings and begins to count the UFO’s there.  “The Red Jaguars…I see one, two, three, four UFO’s; and the Silver Snakes got…one, two, three, four, five!  The Silver Snakes get the half Pendant of Life!”  The audience applauds for a second or two.  “The, uh, Red Jaguars had a little trouble reaching the, uh…ceiling there, but that’s alright; they can catch up in the third and final Game.  It’s worth a full Pendant—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3…”

Olmec begins to explain the final Game:
“No one really knows for sure if a UFO actually landed in Roswell, but in this game, you’ll be recreating what a UFO landing might look like.  When Kirk gives the signal, the player on the ground will grab a UFO and throw it to their partner.  Catch the UFO, slide toward the landing site, toss it over the landing site, and go back for another.  That’s the cue to toss another UFO.  The first team to place five UFO’s at the landing site, or…the team that places the most UFO’s at the end of sixty seconds wins!”

“This is for the Temple,” Kirk explains.  “Set the clock for sixty seconds, please!”  The clock slams down in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.  “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Both girl team members grab a ring and throw it up to their male partners suspended from ziplines.  The boys then slide out and try to throw the rings over the giant post at the “landing site”, but neither one makes their shot, so they go back.  Paul fails to catch the next ring Amanda throws to him, but Jackson does catch Leah’s thrown ring, and slides out to successfully toss it over the hob, taking first blood at the 46-second mark.  Paul catches a ring and tosses it over his hob with 40 seconds left, but Jackson manages to pull ahead again by getting a ring on the post about seven seconds later.  With 29 seconds left, Paul makes another ringer to tie the game up 2-2.  No one scores for quite a while, as Paul and Jackson can’t seem to recreate the accuracy of their first two throws, but with about ten seconds remaining, Jackson throws a ring over his target to pull ahead.  Paul struggles to get another ring on his post, but he can’t, and time soon expires.

“That’s it—stop right there!” Kirk says as he hurries back onscreen.  “Come on over; we’ll check it out.  Well, the Red Jaguars got…two UFO’s, and the Silver Snakes had…three UFO’s!  The Silver Snakes get the full Pendant of life…that gives them a Pendant and a half; the Red Jaguars have a half—the Silver Snakes are goin’ to the Temple!”  Jackson and Leah jump up and down and clap as the audience applauds.  “They’re excited!  Red Jaguars, come here—you guys did a great job, too, and you’re not goin’ home empty-handed.  We’ve got a great fit—gift for you, and here’s what it is!”  They receive a $50 savings bond provided by Wonka candy.

As the prize disappears off-screen, we see Kirk standing beside the Silver Snakes.  “We’ll see if these two can make it through Olmec’s Temple, retrieve the Mysterious Material of the Roswell Object—right after this!”

The camera pans in on the Bottomless Pit and zooms in on a flowering vine creeping up the back wall of the room before the title appears onscreen, and we go to a commercial.

We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the winning team.

“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says.  “The Silver Snakes have proven themselves worthy, and now have earned the right to enter Olmec’s Temple.  But first, here’s Olmec to give them some information about how to retrieve the Mysteeeeerious Material of the Roswell Object…”

Olmec begins to explain the Temple layout as the camera gives us a first-person tour of the Temple:
“You could start…by running up the stairs to the Crypt!  Grab the book from the skeletons, and pass into the Bottomless Pit.  Swing across the gap, and climb into the Lookout Tower.  Focus the telescope to read the ancient print on the far wall, and a door may open into the Geographer’s Study.  Find the missing pieces of the map and correctly place them, and pass into the Shaolin Dojo.  Place the yin-yang on the correct suit of armor, and open the door to the SHRIIIINE of the Silver Monkey!  Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Lightning Ball Room!  Connect the power cords to create your own lightning, which will blast open the door to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage.  Slide down the tunnel to the Dungeon, where you could smash through the wall into the Dark Forest…but beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees!  Find the key in the tree, and you’ll enter the Chamber…of the Four Elements.  Place the elements in the correct order, and you’ll gain entry to the Jewel Mine!  Place all the jewels into the mine cart, then…race through the Pit, climb through the Ledges, rrrrace down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate!  The choices are yours and yours alone!”  Olmec pauses.  “You won 1½ Pendants in the Temple Games.  Who’s going first?”

“I am,” says Leah, raising her hand.

“Very well, Leah,” Olmec replies.  “When Kirk gives the signal, you’ll race through the Gates into the Temple and make your way toward…the Mysterious Material.  Hidden inside the Temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms.  You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but…if you’re caught without a Pendant, you’ll be taken out of the Temple, and it’ll be Jackson’s turn to enter and try his luck.  Hidden somewhere in the Temple is the other half of your Pendant.  If you can find it and you’re carrying the other half, you’ll receive an extra life.  If you can reach the Mysterious Material, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish.  Return through the Gates with the Mysterious Material of the Roswell Object in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded…and here’s how!”

• Just for making it to the Temple, they’ll get an MP3 player.
• If they can reach the Material within three minutes, they’ll also receive a bicycle from Mongoose.
• And if they can bring the Material out of the Temple before three minutes expires, they’ll win a trip to Waikiki Beach, Hawaii.

“All right, these guys wanna go to Hawaii, I know,” says Kirk.  “Let’s see if they can do it…now, what kind of strategy do you guys plan on using in the Temple, Jackson?”
“Um…it’s on the top level, there—the, uh, Material is…so we’re gonna take the low road, and…try to go up when we can,” explains Jackson.

“Taking the long way around—let’s see if that works,” says Kirk.  “You both need your mouthpiece in…set the clock for three minutes!”  The clock slams down in the corner, ready to go.

“Olmec, lower your gate.”  Olmec moans gutturally as the gate is lowered, and the black lights and torches under him go out.

“On your mark,” says Kirk, “get set, GO!”

Leah darts up the stairs, clutching her Pendant tightly.  She soon enters the Crypt, where she begins pulling the golden books from the skeletons there.  The third one she pulls opens the door to the Bottomless Pit, so she progresses there (2:40).  “She’s fast and determined—down into the Bottomless Pit!” says Kirk as Leah immediately dives into the Pit, trudging through the black, green and purple balls that give the bottom the appearance of a dark abyss.  She reaches the other side, hits the actuator for the Jewel Mine, and the door opens for her (2:31).  “She’s doing great so far, but Jackson might have to go at any time!” narrates Kirk as Leah enters the Jewel Mine.  She takes two jewels off the wall facing the Pit and brings them to the mine cart, but out of the cart jumps the first TEMPLE GUARD (2:24)!  “Whoa, Temple Guard, in the mine car!” Kirk narrates as Leah reaches for her Pendant.  “Give him the Pendant, and he’ll go away!”  Leah hands her Pendant over, and the Temple Guard slinks back to the back of the room to allow Leah to place the two jewels she has in the mine cart.  She sees the hidden half-Pendant on the mine cart, and signals to Jackson (2:13).  Afterwards, Leah finds another jewel on the mine cart itself (2:10), three more on the back wall (2:03), two more on the ladder to the Geographer’s Study (1:56), and the last two on the wall leading to the Chamber of the Four Elements.  Once all ten jewels are in the mine cart, the door to the Chamber opens (1:50).  “Okay, over to the Chamber of the Four Elements!” says Kirk as Leah scrambles into the room.  “One minute, fifty seconds—she’s gonna have to hustle now!”  Leah grabs the “fire” tile and places it in its correctly marked slot, and follows up by placing the tiles representing water and air in the next two slots.  The final slot takes the “earth” tile, and Leah finds and places it, opening the door to the Dark Forest (1:33).  “All right—over to the Dark Forest now,” Kirk narrates as Leah makes her way through the door and into the room.  “Hopefully, there aren’t any Temple Spirits in those trees…”  Seconds after Kirk says this, Leah reaches into the stage-left tree, and it grabs her, indicating that a TEMPLE SPIRIT is indeed hiding there (1:23).

“Whoa, there is a Temple Guard!” says Kirk as Jackson takes off.  “I don’t even need to tell him—he’s gone!”  Jackson retraces Leah’s steps, but bypasses the half-Pendant hanging from the mine cart in the Jewel Mine (1:06).  “Oh, he passed the half-Pendant!” says Kirk.  Jackson enters the Chamber of the Four Elements, but suddenly stops and heads back to the Jewel Mine.  “Will he—no, where’s he going?” Kirk asks as Jackson looks around the room.  He waves his arms in the air, then turns back around and enters the Chamber again as he continues onward (0:55).  “Oh, he couldn’t find the half-Pendant,” Kirk says.  “Will that make a difference?  I don’t know…”  Jackson enters the Dark Forest, where he reaches into the stage-left tree in search of a key, but comes out empty-handed (0:47).  He gives up looking, breaking down the wall to the Dungeon as he enters this room.  However, lurking in the corner of the room is the third and final TEMPLE GUARD (0:41).

“No, Temple Guard in the Dungeon!” says Kirk as Leah looks slightly disappointed.  “He didn’t find the half Pendant, so they took him out!  Leah cleared out a big path; they both did great—they still get the MP3 players for playing, and I know they had a good time.  We’ve gotta go, but we’ll see you next time, and remember—it’s not just Legends, it’s Legends: Rebirth!  Buh-bye!”

Kirk and Leah begin to chat as the credits start to roll.  The camera shows various parts of the set, including a line of toy frogs next to the Moat, and a group of red-leaved plants next to Kirk’s ATV.  Jackson emerges from the Temple before long, and he starts to talk with Kirk and Leah before the Stone Stanley logo appears onscreen.

The Mysterious Material of the Roswell Object
Season 2, Layout 2
Artifact Location
: The Lookout Tower
Team: Silver Snakes (Jackson Osbourne & Leah Hargreaves)
Pendants: 1½
Result: Caught by three Temple Guards (0:41 left)

It’s been an oft-seen occurrence on Legends: Rebirth that if you go into the Temple with only one Pendant, you’ll be caught by the third Temple Guard nine times out of ten.  But there’s also a less obvious (but still too-often-seen) occurrence that if you have 1½ Pendants, you’ll need to find the hidden half-Pendant or your run will be ended by a Temple Guard.  Unfortunately, this episode continues the latter pattern.

Leah wasn’t the fastest frontrunner, but she knew what she was doing for the most part.  She located the hidden half-Pendant in the Jewel Mine, and completed the Chamber of the Four Elements’ objective relatively quickly.  She was taken out in the Dark Forest with only 1:23 remaining.

Aside from being on the slow side, Jackson was an okay player.  His major flaw, though, was passing up the half-pendant found by Leah earlier.  Rather than look for a key to go upstairs, he chose to enter the Dungeon from the Dark Forest, where the third Temple Guard was waiting, ending the run with 41 seconds left.

This Temple Run is a prime example of what could happen if you pass up the half-Pendant.  The players were certainly not fast enough to reach the artifact at the rate they were going, but they could possibly have used up all their time if they’d found that critical half-Pendant.

Rating: 4 out of 10

Notes and Trivia: This episode is filled with classic hilarious moments: from Dee Baker’s “Take me to your leader” banter before the Moat, as well as Jackson’s little quip after Kirk interviewed him about his interest in parkour.

This episode has a relatively small audience—only about 25 people in all can be seen seated in the spectator area.

Not quite sure why the diagram turned out so much choppier this time around.  Did you forget what you made the last almost-sixty look like? :P

I think it's a bit interesting that the trend with triple seizures in Rebirth tends to go against the trend in the real show, with one-Pendant teams being more at risk.  It seems like you have a lot of teams that manage to find the half-Pendant, so this was at least a good way to break it up.  And, well, the quotes also helped this one stand out, or at least made the first post-hiatus ep a bit more memorable.

By the way, I think I pointed out an error in the last episode before this regarding the Pendant count, and I think the Shaolin Dojo description in the main thread needs to be tweaked a little.  Not sure if you got the memo before, so hopefully the repost helps. ;)

Yeah, they're both fixed now. ;)

Also, not to give anything away, but this is the last "triple seizure" Temple Run of S2,L2...and there will be successful 1-pendant Temple Runs in the future.
