Episode 9: ?The Radioactive Test Tube of Marie Curie?

*the camera zooms in on an ancient lush jungle, the palms are moving away as an elephant is heard*

*all the palms are gone, showing Olmec*

Olmec: Legends of the Hidden Temple. With your guide? Kirk Fogg!

*Kirk is shown slidding down a zipline & jumping off into the usual area*

Kirk: Thank you everyone. Thank you Olmec. Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple. The rooms are The rooms are filled with lost treasures protected by mysterious Mayan temple guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Which one are we going to hear about today?

Olmec: The Radioactive Test Tube of Marie Curie.

Kirk: The Radioactive Test Tube of Marie Curie! Well, one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the Test Tube. Will it be *camera zooms into each team as they cheer & the usual* The Red Jaguars? The Blue Barracudas? The Green Monkeys? The Orange Iguanas? The Purple Parrots? Or the Silver Snakes? They?re going to have to pass some tough mental and physical tests, and in the end, only one team will have the right to enter Olmec?s temple, but first they have to cross the moat, and Olmec will tell us how they?ll have to do it today.

Olmec: Each team will have 1 rope. There will be a small "island" (platform) in the middle. On go, one player will swing out to the middle of the island. They will pull a hanging chain, which will release a hooked bridge that was attached to the bottom. Than, you'll walk across the bridge to the other side. Than you're partner will swing across & walk across the bridge to ring the gong *Kirk bangs the Silver Snakes? gong*. The first four teams to hit their gong will go on to the next round.

Kirk: Alright, teams are you ready?!

*the teams cheer*

Kirk: Olmec, are you ready?!

Olmec: Let?s rock!

Kirk: On your marks? get set? GO!!!!!

*all 6 teams swing out, all but the Silver Snakes make it across*

*they swing again & the Red Jaguars, Orange Iguanas, & Purple Parrots make it across*

*they swing again & the Blue Barracudas & Green Monkeys make it across & Green Monkeys beat Blue Barracudas in a foot race to the gong*

Kirk: Wow, that was quick! Going onto the Steps of Knowledge are the Purple Parrots! & the Orange Iguanas! & the Green Monkeys! & the Red Jaguars! Blue Barracudas & Silver Snakes, wow you guys were so close, but you just couldn?t pull through, but you won?t be going home empty handed. *Olmec explains prize*

*the camera changes to the four dry teams on the top of the Steps of Knowledge*

Kirk: As the quest continues, it?s now time for Olmec to tell us about the Enchanted Radioactive Test Tube of Marie Curie. Bur before we get started, pay attention, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you a step closer to Olmec?s Temple.

Olmec: Arguably the best woman scientist of all time is Marie Curie. She was the only woman to win 2 Nobel Prizes in different fields, chemistry & physics. She was the first woman in France to complete her doctorate. But it was not all easy, being born in Poland, still under the control of Russia. She suffered a very hard life, with her sister & mother dying around the same time. She suffered a severe mental breakdown after these events. She married Pierre Curie, who showed the same love of science as she did, but after he died, a scandal went around that she was seeing another man, who left his wife. In 1934, she died of aplastic asthma, almost certainly due to her massive exposure to radiation in her work. She would always carry test tubes filled with radioactive isotopes in her pocket, & stored them in her drawer, but one of the test tubes has made it?s way to the Temple! Your job is to find the Radioactive Test Tube of Marie Curie & bring it back here!

Kirk: Where is the Radioactive Test Tube?

Olmec: The Radioactive Test Tube of Marie Curie can be found in the Chamber of the Royal Containers!

Kirk: OK. Teams: you are standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In a minute, Olmec will ask you a question about today?s legend. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. Go ahead, stomp on it!

*Green Monkeys hit the step*

Kirk: OK, Green Monkeys, since you rang in first, you would be able to answer. If you?re right, you?ll move down to the next level. If you?re wrong or run out of time, I?m going to give the other teams a chance to answer. The first two teams to make it to the bottom level *Kirk runs down there* will be one step closer to Olmec?s Temple. Olmec, we are now ready for the first question.

Olmec: Was Marie Curie born in Poland, Russia, or Canada?

Purple Parrots: Poland!

Olmec: That is correct!

*Purple Parrots move down a step*

Olmec: At the time, was Poland under control of: Sweden, China, or Russia?

Red Jaguars: Russia!

Olmec: That is correct!

*Red Jaguars move down a step*

Olmec: Was Marie Curie the only woman to: Win the Nobel Prize, win the Nobel Prize in 2 different fields, or win the Pulitzer Prize?

Red Jaguars: Win the Nobel Prize!

Olmec: Incorrect!

Green Monkeys: Win the Nobel Prize in 2 different fields!

Olmec: That is correct!

*Green Monkeys move down a step*

Olmec: Which one of these was not a field that Marie Curie won the Nobel Prize in: Physics, Anatomy, or Chemistry?

Green Monkeys: Anatomy!

Olmec: That is correct!

*Green Monkeys move down a step*

Kirk: Green Monkeys, you need 1 more correct answer to move on.

Olmec: Is the capital of Poland: Warsaw, Moscow, or St. Petersburg?

Green Monkeys: Warsaw!

Olmec: That is correct!

*Green Monkeys move down to the bottom step*

Kirk: One more team can make it; Orange Iguanas still have a chance!

Olmec: Marie Curie died of aplastic asthma. Was this almost certainly caused by her exposure to: Smoke, Radiation, or Water?

Purple Parrots: Radiation!

Olmec: That is correct!

*Purple Parrots move down a step*

Kirk: Purple Parrots need 1 more correct answer!

Olmec: Did Marie Curie carry test tubes filled with radioactive: Atoms, Isotopes, or Molecules?

Purple Parrots: Isotopes!

Olmec: That is correct!

*Purple Parrots move down with the Green Monkeys*

Kirk: Red Jaguars, Orange Iguanas, you guys gave it a great effort. You?ll still go home with a great prize! *Olmec explains prize*

Kirk: *Green Monkeys & Purple Parrots are present* These two teams will be going head to head in the Temple Games, to fight to enter Olmec?s Temple, right after this!

Kirk: Welcome back to Legends. Now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest. But before we get started, let?s find out a little about our teams. On the Purple Parrots we have Brian, he likes to cook & he collects pens. We also have Monica, she enjoys reading & she wants to be a lawyer. Let?s hear it for the Purple Parrots! But on the Green Monkeys, we have Noah, he likes to play tennis & he has 3 cats! His partner is Dana, she likes to talk on the phone & she wants to be a fashion designer. Let?s hear it for the Green Monkeys! Now, girls get ready for the first Temple Game, guys get ready for the second. Okay, go get ready for the Temple Games, I?m going to explain what?s gonna happen. Teams are competing in temple games to win: Pendants of Life. *shows two pendants* They?re going to need those pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded temple guards as they make their way through the temple. There are three temple games. Olmec, tell us about temple game number one.

Olmec: Marie Curie was always carrying radioactive isotopes in her pockets. Now, you?ll have to collect your own isotopes! Crawl out on the soapy field & grab the first isotope. Slide back & put it in your test tube. Then crawl out even further to the second isotope. The first person to get 4 isotopes in their test tubes, or the person who has the most isotopes after 60 seconds wins!

Kirk: On your marks? get set? GO!!!!!

*Monica & Dana are crawling out*

*Monica grabs the first isotope & gets it in her test tube with 0:43 left, but Dana is a second behind her*

*Monica grabs the second one with 0:28 left, Dana with 0:25*

*Dana catches up to Monica, both reach for the third isotope, but Dana slips without it, Monica puts it in her bucket with 0:09 left*

*Monica is ? way to her fourth one when time runs out*

Kirk: That?s it! Purple Parrots got 3 isotopes, Green Monkeys got 2, Purple Parrots win the ? Pendant of Life! Olmec, tell us about Temple Game two.

Olmec: When Marie Curie was born, Poland was under control of Russia. Now, you?ll have to try to break free. Each person has a water gun & 8 tiles above them. On go, you?ll shoot the water gun at your opponent?s tiles & try to knock them over. The first person to knock over all 8 tiles, or whoever knocks down the most in 60 seconds wins!

Kirk: Guys, get ready! *Brian & Noah pick up guns* On your marks? get set? GO!!!!!

*Brian has problems working the gun, while Noah gets 2 tiles immediately*

*Brian finally gets the gun working, but only after Noah has 3 more tiles left*

*Brian starts working, but too little too late, he got 3 tiles when Noah got another & time ran out*

Kirk: Time! Purple Parrots, had a little trouble working the gun. They got 3 tiles. Green Monkeys got 6 tiles! Green Monkeys win the ? Pendant of Life! Olmec, tell us about the final Temple Game.

Olmec: Marie Curie had to make a lot of compounds as a scientist. Now, you?ll have to do the same. Each person is attached to a cord, attached to a bar, where your partner is on the other side. On go, one person will run on the ramp, propelling them & their partner in a circle. Your partner will grab a compound off the board & run on the ramp to keep the speed. When they are close enough, they?ll throw the compound into their bucket. If they get it in their opponent?s bucket, it still counts? for them! At the end of 60 seconds, the team with the most compounds wins!

Kirk: This is for the Temple! On your marks? get set? GO!!!!!

*both teams have a hard time getting anything in the bucket*

*both teams are still missing, but Purple Parrots get one when time runs out*

Kirk: OK. Purple Parrots got 1 last minute. Green Monkeys got 0. Purple Parrots go to the Temple! Green Monkeys, valiant effort on your part, you won?t go home empty handed. *Olmec explains prize*

Kirk: *only Purple Parrots are present* We're gonna see if the Purple Parrots can retrieve the Radioactive Test Tube of Marie Curie, and we're gonna do it right after this!

Kirk: Welcome back. Brian & Monica have proven themselves worthy and have earned themselves the right to enter Olmec?s temple. But before we get started, Olmec, can you give the Purple Parrots any clues about your Temple & how to retrieve the Radioactive Test Tube of Marie Curie?

Olmec: You can start off in the Miner?s Cave. Crawl through the tunnel to make it into the Pit of Anguish. If you can get across, you can head into the Crocodile?s Mouth! Grab the fish from the walls & put them into the crocodile?s mouth & you can go up into the Ranch! Or you can head into the Anaconda?s Sanctuary. Untangle the snake & attach it to the wall & go into the Sacred Safari! Find the key in the elephant?s mouth, but beware of the Temple Guards, disguised as elephants! You can go up, or bust through the wall into the Battlefield! Jump on the trampoline to reach the ladder in the Ninja?s Secret Training Chamber & climb into the Ladder of Doom! Put the correct torch into the torch holder & enter the Shriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine of the Siiiiiiilver Monkey! Assemble the statue & go into the Chamber of the Royal Containers, where you can grab the Radioactive Test Tube. Dump the containers on the floor & find the key to go down, or head into the Observation Tower! Line up the telescope with the markings on the wall to open the door to cross the Stumps of Dejection! Use the 2 planks to get across the four stumps, or jump back into the Pit of Anguish. Race thorough the Hammered Nails & back to the Temple Gates! The choices are yours & yours alone! You won one pendant into the Temple. Who is going first?

Brian: I am!

Olmec: Very well, Brian! When Kirk gives the signal, you?ll race through the gate into the temple and make your way towards the Original Pamphlet of Thomas Paine. Hidden inside the temple are temple guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you?re caught without a pendant, you?ll be taken out of the temple and it will be Monica?s turn to try his luck. Hidden inside the Temple is a ? Pendant. If you find it, you get an extra life. If you can reach the artifact, all the doors in the temple will instantly unlock, and the temple guards will vanish. Return through the gates with the artifact within three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded. And here?s how! *Olmec explains three prizes*

Kirk: He thinks he?s capable to this! On your marks? get set? GO!!!!!

*Brian crawls down into the Miner?s Cave & goes into the Pit of Anguish & across into the Crocodile?s Mouth with 2:38 left*

*a Temple Guard takes the Pendant & he grabs the 9 fish & goes into the Anaconda?s Sanctuary with 2:12 left*

*he untangles the snake, pushes it against the wall, & goes into the Sacred Safari with 1:52 left*

*he plows through the wall into the Battlefield with 1:48 left*

*he tries the ladder of the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (pointing out the ? Pendant on one of the rungs), but is forced to climb up through the Ninja?s Secret Training Chamber into the Ladder of Doom with 1:35 left*

*he grabs the torch & gets into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey after the third torch hole with 1:29 left*

*a Temple Guard takes him out with 1:27 left*

*Monica goes up into the Hammered Nails & hammers all 3 nails & goes into the Stumps of Dejection & across into the Observation Tower with 1:05 left*

*she lines up the telescope & a Temple Guard takes her out with 1:02 left*

Kirk: Oh, that?s it! They got caught by the Temple Guards! She didn?t get a chance to see the Pendant in the Battlefield, oh, they still go home with a prize! Well, we gotta go now, join us next time on a great Legends of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!

Fan Summary:
The Radioactive Test Tube of Marie Curie

Name of Artifact: The Radioactive Test Tube of Marie Curie
Season: 4
Layout: 7
Result: Caught By Three Temple Guards
Time Remaining: 1:02
Team: Purple Parrots
Pendants Won: 1.5
Location of Artifact: The Chamber of the Royal Containers
Temple Diagram:

Temple Run Summary: I have no pity on Monica, but so much on Brian. Brian did nothing wrong, he went across the bottom floor, curved around & got taken out in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey with 1:27 left. Monica comes, she goes up into the Hammered Nails, across the Stumps of Dejection, & gets taken out in the Observation Tower with 1:02 left. She didn't get a chance to get the 1/2 Pendant in the Battlefield, because she was an idiot & completely walked away from Brian's path. This could've easily been a victory if she didn't wonder off.

One of my biggest faux pas while creating my legends list was that I only included one where the legend centers around a women. It's nice to see others had more foresight than I did.

Well done, Olmec! Just like yourself, this was rock solid, although I can't get over the fact that nearly every room is reached on all of your runs. I guess you just had a whole bunch of skilled contestants!

Haha! Thanks, I don't try to make them like that, it's just how they roll. I didn't want to pass Elizabeth I's Golden Ship by having Brian go up from Safari or Battlefield, & didn't want a Harriet Tubman by her getting taken out in the Hammered Nails, so it just happened like that.

Maybe if you managed the time more realisticly, it would be more believeable that they actually did enter all those rooms.

It was realistic, in my opinion. Brian was fast, Monica was average, but an idiot.

Does anybody else find a subtle bit of humor in this artifact? Imagine: "Go in their, grab this radioctive thing, and we'll give you a TV!"
