Episode 50: The Oil-Soaked Rags of the Japanese Ninja

The camera winds and twists its way through a thick jungle of strange and exotic plants. After a few wrong turns, it finally stops in front of an ancient Mayan temple. At the base of the temple, a giant stone head sits. Suddenly, a torch on either side of the head begins burning. The head’s eyes light up, and it begins to speak:

Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth!” These words appear on the screen. “With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is now!”

A middle-aged man wearing a denim shirt and blue jeans rides in on an ATV. He dismounts the vehicle and runs up the Steps of Knowledge, microphone in hand.

“Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see everyone! Nice to see you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth. The rooms are filled with lost treasures protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legends behind each of these all-new treasures in his temple…which one are we gonna hear about today?”

“The legend of the Oil-Soaked Rags of the Japanese Ninja,” Olmec replies.

“Ooh, the Oil-Soaked Rags of the Japanese Ninja,” Kirk repeats. “Well, the legend is set, and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the Oil-Soaked Rags—will it be:

“The Red Jaguars?” The camera zooms in on each team as they are introduced.
“The Blue Barracudas?
“The Green Monkeys?
“The Orange Iguanas?
“The Purple Parrots?
“Or the Silver Snakes?

“They’ll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests, but in the end, only one team will have the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, they have to cross that Moat, and Olmec will tell us how they have to do that today…”

Olmec begins to explain the Moat Crossing:
“Before you hangs a row of ancient suspended rings. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will reach up and grab the first ring, then swing out to the next one and grab onto it with their other hand, on their way across. Once you reach the other side, it’s your partner’s turn to cross in the same way. If you fall, you must go back and start again. Once both players are safely across, run over and hit the gong.” Kirk hits the Silver Snakes’ gong to demonstrate. “The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round!”

“All right, let’s get started,” Kirk says. “Teams, are you ready?”
All six teams scream and cheer in response.
“Olmec, are you ready?” asks Kirk.
“You know it,” Olmec replies.
“All right,” says Kirk. “On your mark, get set…GO!”

All six teams’ first members swing out to the first ring and grab onto it. The Blue Barracudas’ boy has trouble reaching out to the second ring right off the bat, but most of the other players reach it with no problems. “They can’t rush in this one—they’ve gotta take it one at a time, and not get too carried away,” Kirk narrates. The Blue Barracudas’ boy falls into the Moat and has to be sent back, but the other five teams appear to be making some progress, with the Green Monkeys’ girl and the Red Jaguars’ boy slightly out in front. The Orange Iguanas’ girl is having a bit of trouble reaching the fourth ring, and the Purple Parrots’ boy appears to be getting tired as he reaches for his fourth ring. The Green Monkeys’ girl is almost across as the Red Jaguars’ boy slightly pulls ahead of her to grab his sixth and final ring. The Blue Barracudas’ boy has made it to his second ring, but most of the other teams’ first members have now made it across, with the Red Jaguars’ boy and Green Monkeys’ girl setting foot on the dock first. “Looks like everybody’s doing good so far—Blue Barracudas have a little catching up to do, though!” Kirk narrates. The Purple Parrots’ girl slips off the first ring trying to grab the second one, and is promptly sent back. The Blue Barracudas’ boy makes it across after about twenty seconds, and his partner now begins to cross as most of the second team members are at least halfway across. The Green Monkeys’ boy swings onto the dock first, and he becomes the first person to hit his team’s gong; the Red Jaguars’ girl soon follows. “Two teams—we need two more!” Kirk narrates. About eight seconds later, the Silver Snakes’ boy steps onto the dock and hits his team’s gong to make it three. The Purple Parrots’ girl is now about a third of the way across, but the Orange Iguanas’ boy steps onto the dock and hits his team’s gong to end the Moat Crossing, all before the mist even disappears from the Moat.

“There we go—there’s our four teams!” Kirk says as he rushes over and stands beside the Silver Snakes. “Silver Snakes took it one step…one ring at a time, and it pays off—they’re goin’ on to the Steps of Knowledge…along with the Orange Iguanas…” Kirk pauses between each team’s name to allow for applause. “…and the Green Monkeys…and the Red Jaguars! The Blue Barracudas and the Purple Parrots gave a great effort, but we’ve got a great gift for ‘em anyway. Here’s what it is!” They receive a $50 gift certificate from Old Navy.

Legends: Rebirth-The Oil-Soaked Rags of the Japanese Ninja
« Reply #1 on: November 24, 2010, 03:28:18 PM »
Kirk and the remaining four teams are now standing atop the Steps of Knowledge. “As the quest continues, it’s time now for Olmec to tell us about the Oil-Soaked Rags of the Japanese Ninja. But teams, pay attention, because your knowledge of the legend could bring you a step closer to Olmec’s Temple…”

Olmec begins to tell the story:
“One of the most renowned samurai of ancient Japan was Hattori Hanz?. A member of one of the most well-respected families in Japan, Hanz? was a guard for Japanese shogun leader Tokugawa Ieyasu, and was a master of spear- and sword-fighting. Some people say he even possessed magical powers, and could disappear in a puff of smoke when things got to be too much for him. Most people respected Hanz? for his master tactics, but one man, a flashy ninja known as Fuma Kotaro, was a notoriously clever opponent for Hanz?. Kotaro was unusually large for a ninja, and some say he had blood-red, almost demonic, eyes. One day, as Hanz? was in a courtyard training, legend has it that he was approached by Shogun Tokugawa himself.
“‘Hanz?-San, some of my finest guards have been attacked in the Osegawa River,’ said Tokugawa. ‘You do know what this means, do you not?”
“‘Wait…you have guards finer than me?’ asked Hanz?.
“‘Do not kid around,’ replied Tokugawa. ‘I need you to go see who is responsible for this outrage.’
“So Hanz? went to the Osegawa River, across from the town of Ukishimagahara. When he arrived, he discovered that a camp of guards had been attacked numerous times, and the men there savagely beaten.
“‘This is an absolute travesty,’ said Hanz? . ‘Is the Code of the Samurai not sacred anymore?’
“Hanz? boarded his small boat and set sail further into the channel, in search of who did away with the men. But unbeknownst to Hanz?, hiding on the shore was F?ma Kotar?, watching his archrival intently.
“‘You won’t get me today, Hanz?-San,’ he hissed. ‘In fact, you’re about to feel the fire of defeat!’
“Kotar took a clump of old rags from his side and soaked them with sesame oil. He then lit them and tossed them in the river. The entire channel, which had been coated with sesame oil by Kotar? beforehand, went up in flames in no time, and Hanz?’s boat was set ablaze, doing away with him in the process. Kotar? was eventually arrested and done away with for committing the crime, but the rags he used to set fire to the channel were lost…until now, that is. Your quest is to find the Oil-Soaked Rags of the Japanese Ninja and bring them back here.”

“Okay, thanks, Olmec,” says Kirk. “But please, tell us—where are the Oil-Soaked Rags?”

“The Oil-Soaked Rags of the Japanese Ninja can be found in the Room of the Mystical Keys,” replies Olmec. The camera zooms in on a clump of dirty gray cloth rags hanging off the edge of the railing in the room before fading back to Kirk.

“All right,” says Kirk. “Teams, you’re now standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In a minute, Olmec’s gonna ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on that ancient marking in front of you. If you’re right, you can move down to the next level. However, if you’re wrong or you run out of time, I’m gonna give the other teams a chance.” Kirk begins descending the steps. “The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec’s Temple. All right, Olmec…we’re now ready for your first question.”

Olmec begins:
“Was Hattori Hanz?: a ninja, a Ronin, or a samurai?”
The Orange Iguanas ring in. “Ninja!”
“Incorrect,” Olmec replies, and the Orange Iguanas’ boy looks dumbfounded.
The Green Monkeys ring in. “A samurai?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Green Monkeys step down to the second level.
“Step down, Green Monkeys,” Kirk says. “Next question, Olmec.”

“In ancient Japan, the samurai served as palace guards to the Japanese emperor, who was known as: the shah, the shogun, or the sultan?”
The Red Jaguars ring in. “The, um…shogun.”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Red Jaguars join the Green Monkeys on the second step.
“Red Jaguars are right behind ‘em,” remarks Kirk. “Next question.”

“Which shogun did Hattori Hanz? serve under: Lord Yoritomo, Tokugawa Ieyasu, or King Koopa?”
The Green Monkeys ring in. “Toku…cow-a…Ee-wa-su?”
“That…is correct,” Olmec replies.
“Tricky pronunciation,” Kirk says as the Green Monkeys proceed to the penultimate step. “But now the Green Monkeys are just one step away from the Temple Games! Remember, though, we need two teams…next question, Olmec.”

“One of Hanz?’s biggest rivals was F?ma Kotar?. Was he: a pirate, a ninja, or another samurai?”
The Orange Iguanas ring in as Olmec is giving the final choice. “A…ninja?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies.
Now’s the time for the ninja answer!” Kirk says as the Orange Iguanas descend to the second step. “Next question, please.”

“In feudal Japan, what was the main difference between samurai and ninjas: samurai were higher-class than ninjas, ninjas didn’t carry swords, or ninjas didn’t ride horses?”
After a few seconds, the Green Monkeys ring in. “Samurais were, um…higher-class?”
“That…is correct!” Olmec booms.
“The Green Monkeys are the first team for the Temple Games!” Kirk exclaims as the Green Monkeys step to the bottom and high- and low-five one another. “We still need one more team, though. Who will it be? Olmec, next question so we can find out.”

“To do away with Hanz?, did F?ma Kotar?: suffocate him while he slept, set fire—”
The Red Jaguars ring in early. “He, um…set fire to the river…while, uh…the samurai’s boat was in it?”
That is correct!” Olmec booms after a short pause. The Red Jaguars jump to the bottom step, where they are congratulated by the Green Monkeys.

“And we’ve got our two teams for the Temple Games!” Kirk says as he rushes onscreen and stands between them. “They’re the Green Monkeys, and the Red Jaguars! Orange Iguanas, Silver Snakes, come on down, you guys…you guys did great, too; you made it this far. We’re not sending you home empty-handed—we’ve got a great gift for you, and here’s what it is!” They receive a backpack from Outdoor Products.

Kirk is now seen standing between the two remaining teams. “These two teams will be playing for the right to enter Olmec’s Temple, right after this!”

The camera flies over Kirk and the teams and comes to rest on a moss-covered hanging ring over the Moat as the title appears onscreen, and we fade to a commercial.

Legends: Rebirth-The Oil-Soaked Rags of the Japanese Ninja
« Reply #2 on: November 24, 2010, 03:33:33 PM »
We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the two remaining teams.

“Welcome back,” he says. “Now, the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, but first, let’s get to know our teams a bit better…”

Kirk turns first to the Red Jaguars, who are made up of a tall girl with short, nappy brown hair and blue eyes and an equally tall Hispanic-looking boy with short, shiny jet-black hair and hazel eyes.
“First, on the Red Jaguars, we’ve got Holly. How old are you, Holly?”
“Thirteen,” says Holly.
“And here it says that you like science and history, and you want to be a pediatrician someday…why’s that?”
“Well,” explains Holly, “I like kids, and…um, I really like working with kids and…I just think it’d be a cool job to have.”
“Ah, nice,” says Kirk as he turns to interview Holly’s partner. “And here, we have Carlos. How old are you, Carlos?”
“Fourteen,” Carlos replies.
“And it says that you like to play basketball, but you also like to draw…what kind of stuff do you like to draw?”
“Um…mainly cartoon stuff,” replies Carlos. “I, uh…like to make up characters, and…I’m thinking about making a book with ‘em one day.”
“Sounds like this team isn’t short on creativity,” says Kirk. “Let’s hear it for the Red Jaguars!” Carlos and Holly applaud along with the audience.

Kirk now turns to the Green Monkeys, who are made up of a petite brown-eyed girl with straight, shoulder-length brown hair and a taller, brown-eyed boy with his long black hair tied back into a ponytail.
“And over on the Green Monkeys, we’ve got Gwen. How old are you, Gwen?”
“Thirteen,” she says.
“And it says here that you play basketball and soccer, but you really like the outdoors…tell me a little about that.”
“Well, I really like to go hiking…swimming, that sort of stuff,” says Gwen. “I’ve got two older brothers who are real outdoorsy, and…they kind of got me into it, too.”
“Okay, neat,” says Kirk as he turns to interview her partner. “And this is Craig. How old are you?”
“Thirteen,” he replies.
“And…you like to play basketball, but you also play the guitar…how long have you been playing? The guitar, I mean…”
“Um…about two years,” replies Craig. “I got started when I was about eleven, and…I’m getting better at it.”
“Can you play any songs?” asks Kirk.
“…A few,” says Craig hesitantly.
“Well, we’ll see if you can rock these Temple Games,” says Kirk. “Let’s hear it for the Green Monkeys!” Gwen applauds along with the audience as Craig puts his hand on her shoulder and pumps his fist in the air.

“All right, are you guys ready to play?” Kirk asks the two teams.

“Yeah!” they reply.

“All right, then—go get ready for the Temple Games,” Kirk instructs as the players all scatter in various directions to do so. “Now, in the Temple Games, our teams are competing for…” Kirk retrieves a Pendant of Life from a pouch at his side and holds it up to the camera. “…Pendants of Life. The winners are gonna need these Pendants to protect them from the incredibly scary Temple Guards as they make their way through Olmec’s Temple. There are three Temple Games—Olmec, tell us about the first one, if you please…”

The black lights under Olmec come on as he begins to explain the first Game:
“In the days of feudal Japan, samurai like Hanz? often had to maneuver through meticulous terrain to get from place to place. In this game, you’ll see what that may have been like. When Kirk gives the signal, place your sword behind your head, and without taking your hands off it, maneuver your way through the bamboo thicket before you. If you remove your hands from your sword, you must go back and start again. The first player to reach the exit, or…the player that’s further along at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”

“Lost in the woods…who’s gonna make it out first?” asks Kirk. “Let’s find out…set the clock for sixty seconds!” The clock slams down in the bottom right-hand corner with a loud gong sound. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Gwen and Holly each place their plastic “sword” behind their head and begin making their way through the maze of bamboo poles. Gwen manages to take a considerable lead at first, but she has a little trouble getting through the intersections of poles when she comes to them, allowing Holly to catch up to her each time she comes to one. Still, Gwen manages to maintain her lead up to the end of the game, and makes it to the exit with only six seconds left on the clock.

“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as he rushes back onscreen. “That’s it—the Green Monkeys made it out just in the nick of time, so they get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds for a few seconds. “Red Jaguars can catch up in this next game. It’s also worth a half a Pendant—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2, please…”

Olmec begins:
“As a member of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s guards, Hanz? often had to fend off many intruders at one time. In this game, you’ll have to take down four intruders of your own. When Kirk gives the signal, load your slingshot and fire a ball at one of the soldiers. Then load another ball and do it again. The first player to knock down all four intruders, or…the player who knocks over the most in thirty seconds…wins.”

“Looks like we’ve got some exterminating to do,” remarks Kirk. “Let’s set the clock for sixty—thirty seconds!” The clock slams down in the corner with the usual sound effect. “All right, ready…aim…FIRE!”

Craig knocks over the left-middle target on his first shot, but Carlos only totters his right-middle target. On Carlos’ next shot, he knocks over the target, but Craig pulls ahead only two seconds later by knocking over his right-middle target. Fifteen seconds into the game, Carlos knocks over his left-middle target to tie up the game. As time ticks away, it seems as though the game will end in a tie, but Craig manages to hit his leftmost target with six seconds remaining. With only two seconds left, Carlos hits his right-hand target, but it only teeters, staying fully erect when time expires.

“All right, that’s it!” says Kirk as he appears back onscreen. “Hold your fire, everybody! The Green Monkeys—let’s count it up and see how we did. The Green Monkeys got three targets down, and…the Red Jaguars got two targets down! The Green Monkeys get the half Pendant of Life!” Kirk pauses to allow for applause. “So now, it’s—the Green Monkeys have a full Pendant; the Red Jaguars don’t have any yet. But now, it’s time for the third and final Temple Game. It’s worth a full Pendant—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3…”

Olmec begins to explain the final Temple Game:
“In this game, you’ll be doing what Hanz? never got a chance to do—capture F?ma Kotar? and bring him back to the shogun’s court. When Kirk gives the signal, propel your boat off the dock toward your destination. When you reach it, climb out and load the ninja into the boat. Then, turn around and sail back. Be careful not to touch the water, or you’ll have to go back and start again. The first team to make it back to the dock, or…the team that’s further along at the end of sixty seconds…wins!”

“This is for the Temple,” says Kirk. “Let’s get…put sixty seconds on the clock!” The clock appears in the corner, all ready to go. “Lemme just get out of the way…all right, on your mark, get set, GO!”

Both teams push their boats off the dock and roll toward the destination on the other end of the stage. They both climb out to load the rag doll clothed in a black ninja outfit waiting for them there, but Craig accidentally sets foot on the floor, and not the dock, prompting the spotters to send he and Gwen back. The Red Jaguars, though, load their ninja doll into the boat and slowly start turning their boat around with 42 seconds left. On their second trip, the Green Monkeys manage to keep off the floor and step onto the dock and load their doll. They quickly start to turn their boat around, but by then, it’s too little, too late, as the Red Jaguars make it back to where they started with ten seconds remaining.

“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as he appears back onscreen and runs onto the dock. “The Red Jaguars made it back first, so they win the full Pendant. That gives them one Pendant; the Green Monkeys also have one Pendant—we’ve got a tie! Bring in the tiebreaker pedestal, please!”

A spotter wheels in the tiebreaker pedestal, and the teams position themselves behind it. Kirk stands beside them as he begins to explain the rules:

“All right, teams, here’s what’s about to happen. In a minute, Olmec will ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, hit the gong in front of you. You have three seconds to answer, and I have to accept your first response. The first team to buzz in and answer correctly will be going inside the Temple in search of the Oil-Soaked Rags. All clear?” Both teams’ members nod in response. “All right…Olmec, what is your final question?”

Olmec begins to ask the final question of the day:
“Samurai usually carried two of these weapons: slingshots, swords, or spears?”

The Green Monkeys ring in as Olmec is giving the final choice. “Swords?” answers Craig.

“That…is correct!” Olmec booms.

“The Green Monkeys are goin’ to the Temple!” Kirk exclaims as Gwen and Craig high-ten one another and applaud excitedly. “Red Jaguars, you guys—come over here. You guys were amazing, too—it came down to one final question. We’ve got a great gift for you guys, and here’s what it is!” They receive the game Pictionary Man.

As the prize disappears off-screen, we see Kirk standing next to the Green Monkeys. “They did it—now we’ll see if the Green Monkeys make it through Olmec’s Temple and retrieve the Oil-Smoked—Soaked Rags of the Japanese Ninja, right after this!”

The camera pans in on the Temple and zooms in on the clump of Oil-Soaked Rags before the title appears onscreen, and we go to a commercial.

Legends: Rebirth-The Oil-Soaked Rags of the Japanese Ninja
« Reply #3 on: November 24, 2010, 03:37:51 PM »
We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the winning team.

“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “The Green Monkeys have proven themselves worthy, and now have earned the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, Olmec will give them some information to help them to retrieve the Oil-Soaked Rags of the Japanese Ninja…”

Olmec begins to explain the Temple layout as the camera gives us a first-person walkthrough of the Temple:
“You could start…by running up the stairs to the Crypt! Grab the book from the skeletons, and pass into the Bottomless Pit! Swing across the gap, and climb into the Great Seal Room. Place the correct seal in the central holder, and a door may open into the Candelabra Room. Light the correct candelabra, and pass into the Room…of the Mystical Keys! Reach into the compartments to find the two correct keys, and open the door to the SHRIIIIINE of the Silver Monkey! Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Lightning Ball Room. Connect the power cords to create your own lightning, which will blast open the door to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage. Slide down the tunnel to the Dungeon, where you could smash through the wall into the Dark Forest—but beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees! Find the key in the tree, and you’ll enter…the Snake Pit! Place the snakes in the hollow stump, and you’ll gain entry to the Tomb of the Headless Kings. Pull the vine to release the bones, and attach the missing skull to its proper king, then…race through the Pit, climb through the Ledges, rrrrrrace down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone!” Olmec pauses. “You won 1 Pendant in the Temple Games. Who’s going first?”

“I am,” says Gwen, raising her hand.

“Very well, Gwen,” Olmec replies. “When Kirk gives the signal, you’ll race through the Gate into the Temple and make your way toward the Oil-Soaked Rags. Hidden inside the Temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but…if you’re caught without a Pendant, you’ll be taken out of the Temple, and it’ll be Craig’s turn to enter and try his luck. If you can reach the Rags, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards…will vanish. Return through the Gates with the Oil-Soaked Rags of the Japanese Ninja in three minutes, and you’ll both be handsomely rewarded…and here’s how!”

• Just for making it this far, they’ll get a sports package from Outdoor Products.
• If they can grab the Rags within three minutes, they’ll also receive a game table.
• And if they can bring the Rags out of the Temple before three minutes expires, they’ll win a trip to the Bahamas.

“All right, a trip to the Bahamas—let’s see if they can make it back and win it all,” says Kirk. “Everybody, get ready…now, Craig, what kind of strategy do you guys have to get to the Oil-Soaked Rags?”

“Um, she said she’s gonna try to stay low, and then try to go up when she can, right?” Craig says, turning to Gwen.

“Right,” Gwen says as Kirk holds the microphone up to her mouth. “I’ll just try to…go over to the Dungeon, and then…head up when I can.”

“All right…these guys have it figured out; or so they think,” says Kirk. “Let’s see if they can do it. Everybody’s got their mouthpiece in? Set the clock for three minutes!” The clock slams down in the bottom right-hand corner, ready to go.

“Olmec, lower the gate, please.” Olmec moans gutturally as the gate is lowered, and the black lights and torches under him go out.

“Ready, Gwen?” Kirk asks one final time.

“Mm-hmm,” she says through her mouthpiece.

“On your mark,” begins Kirk, “get set, GO!”

“There she goes, up into the Temple!” a Kirk voice-over narrates as Gwen darts up the stairs, clutching her Pendant. She chooses to slide down into the Ledges to start off, making her way through the room fairly quickly (2:52). She finds the actuator for the Bottomless Pit and hits it, opening the door into the room. “She’s fast, but will she be fast enough to reach the Oil-Soaked Rags?” the voice-over narrates as Gwen enters the Bottomless Pit (2:41). She trudges through the dark-colored balls that litter the bottom part of the room, making it over to the other side a short time later, where she hits the actuator to the Tomb of the Headless Kings. The door opens, so she progresses into the room and heads to the spot behind the two skeletons where the rope hangs. She pulls the rope, sending a shower of bones falling from the ceiling (2:23). She looks around for a second or two before finding the skull, which she grabs and places on the stage-right king; however, nothing happens. Gwen quickly pulls the skull off the skeleton and places it on the stage-left one, causing a red, pulsating light to emit from the body’s torso, and opening the doors to both the Candelabra Room and the Snake Pit (2:09). She chooses to head into the latter room, where she starts looking around the room before doing anything. “She’s right under the Rags—she’s making great time!” the voice-over remarks. “But it could be turn for Craig at any time!” The camera shows Craig clapping politely and cheering “Come on, Gwen!”

When we cut back to Gwen, we see that she’s found one of the stuffed snakes and is threading it through one of the holes in the stump at the back of the room. A hissing sound is heard in the room as she looks around for the other snake, which she finds after a few seconds. She inserts it in one of the two holes on the other side of the stump and slowly threads it through, eventually opening the door to the Dark Forest (1:44). “Whoa, she got it!” the voice-over says. “She’s making great time, and now she’s closer than ever!” Gwen ventures into the Dark Forest, where she completely bypasses the trees and breaks down the rock wall into the Dungeon. She begins to head toward the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage, but changes her mind and decides to climb up the ladder to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey instead. She hits the actuator, and the door opens, so she progresses into the room (1:20). “Already she’s in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey,” the voice-over says. “Could she do this all by herself?” Gwen heads to the back of the room, grabbing all three pieces of the statue at once before bringing them back to the front of the room. She places the base without much trouble (1:00), and after getting it backwards on her first try, successfully fits the middle on top of it (0:51). She jams down the head after a few seconds, opening the door to both the Room of the Secret Password and the Room of the Mystical Keys (0:45). She looks around in surprise for a few seconds before heading into the latter room, where she heads to the front of the room and grabs the OIL-SOAKED RAGS (0:40).

“She’s in—she’s got the Rags!” a now-live Kirk shouts as all the doors of the Temple fly open. “She’s got the Rags—no Temple Guards left! All she has to do is get out!” Gwen darts through the Candelabra Room before the camera cuts to Craig, jumping up and down and applauding. “Come on!” he shouts before we cut back to Gwen, who is now swinging onto the far edge of the Bottomless Pit (0:33). Gwen almost falls off the ledge, and even drops one of the Rags into the Pit in the process. She regains her bearings and darts back through the Crypt, making it back down the stairs to record the win with 24 seconds remaining.

“She did it!” Kirk shouts as Gwen makes it to the bottom and walks over to Kirk and Craig grabs her by the shoulder and starts cheering in victory. “She did it all herself! No Temple Guards in sight—look, she’s still got her Pendant! She didn’t even need it! They got it all! They got the sports packages, they got the game table—they’re goin’ to the Bahamas!” Craig and Gwen both cheer joyfully. “That was great—they both did great! This was a great team, I’m glad we got to have ‘em on the show! Unfortunately, though, we’ve gotta get out of here. We’ll see you next time, though, and remember: it’s not just Legends, it’s Legends: Rebirth!”

The credits begin to roll as Gwen holds up the clump of Oil-Soaked Rags and Kirk and Craig wave to the audience. The camera shows us a first-person view of several rooms in the Temple, including the Dungeon, Dark Forest, and Snake Pit. We see Gwen and Craig hugging one another as Kirk waves good-bye one final time, and the Stone Stanley logo appears onscreen.

The Oil-Soaked Rags of the Japanese Ninja
Season 2, Layout 1
Artifact Location
: The Room of the Mystical Keys
Team: Green Monkeys (Craig Mercer & Gwen Grayson)
Pendants: 1
Result: Escaped! (0:24 left)

After a string of uneventful, mostly bland episodes, it was good to see one as exciting as this. The Moat Crossing was over pretty quickly, and the Steps of Knowledge were interesting and competitive. After tying 1-1 in the Temple Games, the Green Monkeys got the tiebreaker question correct (which was the exact same tiebreaker question from “The War Fan of the 47 Ronin”) and were Temple-bound.

Gwen was a fast, intelligent player who knew her whereabouts in the Temple. She was quick to complete the objectives for the Snake Pit and the Shrine of the Silver Monkey, and her run was helped along immensely by the fact that she didn’t meet a single Temple Guard. She grabbed the Oil-Soaked Rags with a good 33 seconds left, and made it out thirteen seconds later to record the first solo victory of the second season.

This was one of the most emotional episodes I’ve ever seen, and the team (especially Gwen) seemed genuinely excited about winning. It’s a rarity when episodes such as this come along, but when they do, they’re usually great television moments to watch.

Rating: 9 out of 10

Notes and Trivia: Out of all the episodes with the “swinging rings” Moat Crossing, this one takes up the shortest amount of time—about two-and-a-half minutes.

This episode’s pre-Temple Run interview is one of only two when we hear from both players, as opposed to only one.

This episode’s Temple Run marks only the second time on Rebirth (and one of only three in all) that no Temple Guards are encountered throughout the entire run. Coincidentally, both so far are Green Monkeys victories.

She must've asked Joel from the Iron Nose Ring episode for tips. :P
