Megadeth's Rust In Peace 20th Anniversary Tour
« on: March 15, 2010, 01:16:16 PM »
Duuuuuude, that concert was AWESOOOOME. *Passes out for another fourteen hours*

It's too bad I don't know any songs by Exodus or Testament, or I would've joined in more than I did.  I was stuck against the railing at the bottom tier of the concert room... thing for most of Exodus's set, just hanging out with a few people I met beforehand and banging my head like crazy... which meant I was going to head back into the bar/market-ish room... thing (yes, I know I'm bad with descriptors) in front of the concert room during Testament's set.

Now, the check I sent in for Megadeth fan club membership (which would generally allow for meet and greet sessions) didn't make it to the destination on time, so I figured I couldn't get anyone to sign the booklet for my Rust In Peace CD and left the whole thing at my dorm.  But I was allowed a chance to buy another one that Dave Mustaine and David Ellefson would sign after the show? did not see that coming, but that was a pleasant surprise.  Besides that, I got the obligatory T-shirt from the concert? Holy Wars single artwork for the front, Rust In Peace cover on the back, but with the band members replacing the world leaders and the stops on the tour listed in the negative space.

Anyway, when you're at a concert full of hardcore metalheads (no, I don't mean as in "hardcore punk" :P), it's tough to tell the fans from the bands.  I came across a LOT of look-alikes, including one guy that looked EXACTLY like James Hetfield, but I couldn't think of the best way to ask him if he was the real deal or if my eyes were playing tricks on me. (And before you guys say "Why the hell would a Metallica band member be at a Megadeth concert?" let's keep in mind they're touring together in Europe later this year and one of the guys I talked to has a friend who met Glen Drover? a guitarist who left Megadeth to focus on his family rather than being fired? in the crowd of a Metallica concert. :B)

I didn't stay put during Megadeth's set.  I was standing in one of the upper tiers (no seats in the entire room) when they opened with the intense "Set The World Afire"? a great choice considering its working title ended up becoming the band's name instead.  I worked my way down towards the floor during "Wake Up Dead" and was in the crowds trying to push my way to the front during "In My Darkest Hour"; as the song ended, I finally made my way to the back of the bottom tier, where there was a few of the guys I'd talked to during the Testament set.  So as Megadeth started playing the entire Rust In Peace album, there I was trying to scream, shout or growl out the lyrics while banging my head to the instrumentals (there was even a mini-headbanging-competition between me and another one of the guys during "Hangar 18"? he won since I'm not so used to it XD).

When "Five Magics" ended, though, I decided I was going to be in the mosh pit for "Poison Was The Cure." This was only my third real concert and actually my first time in a mosh pit, so I didn't do as much pushing around as I let myself get tossed around.  Oh well.  After that, I was starting to get tired and really losing the ability to talk or stand up straight.  I tried to keep it together for my favorite song off the album, "Lucretia," as well as the crowd favorite, "Tornado Of Souls," but after that I ended up propping myself up on one of the railings separating the floor from the next level up? I eventually climbed over it after a couple of the non-RIP songs at the end of the show.

The other thing about the mosh pit had to do with my CD? I didn't bring a coat or anything, so I kept the CD in the pocket of my jeans, behind my phone and camera.  Needless to say, it got crushed.  When I took it out at the end of the show, the case was cracked.  I finally got to meet Dave Squared to have the booklet signed, and what happened was:
Quote
Me: *Holds up the cracked CD case while putting the booklet down on the table where the two were sitting* If this isn't a souvenir, I don't know what is!
Dave Mustaine: What? *Signs on the page opposite his face, then hands the booklet over to Junior*
Me: The CD case.  It got cracked while I was moshing out there.  If that's not a souvenir, I don't know what is!
Mustaine: *Laughing* Man, you gotta speak up.  It's like you got a dick* in your mouth!

*For some reason I heard "pick" at the time? possibly because he and Junior were chuckling? but that doesn't sound like something Dave would say.
Well, after that, I told Junior (David Ellefson, that is) it's great to have him back and that I'd see the band again in August.  After that I almost went up the wrong set of stairs from the lower part of the stage before being redirected, then almost went past the guy who was supposed to cut off the yellow wristband I got that meant I was allowed to get the CD booklet signed.  Yes, I was that tired. XD

By the way, Megadeth's entire setlist, if anyone was curious:
Quote
Set The World Afire
Wake Up Dead
In My Darkest Hour
Holy Wars... The Punishment Due
Hangar 18
Take No Prisoners
Five Magics
Poison Was The Cure
Lucretia
Tornado Of Souls
Dawn Patrol
Rust In Peace... Polaris
Head Crusher
Trust
Symphony Of Destruction
Peace Sells
Last part of "Holy Wars" again, though all instrumental except for the last line? this was used so Dave could name the current members of the band and let them each get a round of applause

After the show, I headed back toward the Greyhound station I came from, but I stopped in a restaurant along the way and randomly met up with a droogie (code for "Megadeth fan") that I'd friended before the show in hopes of knowing someone else who was going there.  We talked for a bit as I got something to eat, I got introduced to the group she was with, and after a while I said my goodbyes and headed back on towards the station.  It seems like all the droogies are very friendly to one another, which makes for a good fanbase.

Overall, it was a great night; even better than I expected.  I didn't even think I'd get to talk with anybody in the band until I was there, so I'll take what I can get, you know? C:
