Rediscovery EP: Henry the Navigator's Missing Maps
« on: January 07, 2007, 02:06:49 PM »
Author's Note: This is one of the episodes of my independent project, Legends: The Rediscovery.  More information on the project can be found by following this link.

Episode 19: Henry the Navigator's Missing Maps

The camera maneuvers through a thick, lush rainforest to stop in front of an ancient temple. A giant stone head next to the gate of the temple begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk descends into view on a rope. "Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple. The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Which legend are we gonna hear about today?"

Olmec replies:
"The legend of Henry the Navigator's Missing Maps."

"Ooh, Henry the Navigator's Missing Maps!" Kirk says in response. "Well the legend is set, and one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the Missing Maps. Will it be:
"Adam and Trista of the Red Jaguars—" the camera pans to each team in order—
"José and Marisa of the Blue Barracudas,
"Jimmy and Kimberly of the Green Monkeys,
"Danny and Amber of the Orange Iguanas,
"Richie and Katherine of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Chris and Natambi of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple. First, they must cross the moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today:
"In front of each team an aged vine bridge has fallen across the Moat. When I say 'go,' one player on each team will walk onto the lower vine in the middle and hold onto the side vines with their hands. Remember, there's a break in the middle vine, and if your feet touch the water when you try to jump over the gap, you'll have to go back and try again. When the first player steps onto the deck, it's their partner's turn to get on the bridge."
"When both players are on the deck at the other end of the Moat, run over and hit the gong." He slams down on the Red Jaguars' gong to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round, so let's get started. Hey teams— are you ready?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"Let's start rockin'," Olmec says as an answer.
"All right then," Kirk replies. "On your mark, get set, GO!"

The players all move at a relatively good pace, and the first players all get to the other side at almost exactly the same time. The girl on the Green Monkeys slips right off the middle vine even before she gets close to the break in the bridge, allowing the second players on the Silver Snakes and Red Jaguars to gong in for the first and second positions. Purple Parrots hit their gong third and Orange Iguanas make it across fourth.
"That's it!" announces Kirk. "We've got our four teams!" He runs over to join the Silver Snakes and segue to the next segment. "Silver Snakes over in a flash! They're goin' on the Steps of Knowledge, along with the Purple Parrots—" the camera briefly shows each qualifying team— "and the Orange Iguanas— and the Red Jaguars! Blue Barracudas and Green Monkeys gave it a great effort too. We've got a nice gift for them for playing and here's what it is." Jimmy, Kimberly, José and Marisa will each be receiving a prize package from British Knights.

The four teams are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about Henry the Navigator's Missing Maps.  But pay attention teams, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you one step closer to Olmec's Temple."

Olmec begins to tell the story:
"One of the most famous explorers in medieval Portugal was Prince Henry the Navigator.  He had sailed all over the Atlantic Ocean and traded overseas with west Africa.  But as he grew older, he could no longer sail the oceans and travel the world.
" 'There's still so much I haven't seen, I just know it!' Henry said to himself one day. 'If only someone else could sail around Africa and tell me what I won't get to see and I'd call it India.'
"Soon Henry decided to open a school at Sagres Point, which would train young men to become overseas explorers.  One of the first students to complete the course was the great Vasco da Gama, to whom Henry gave his set of maps of the Indian Ocean, east of Africa.  While Vasco did make it around Africa to India, the wind blew the maps overboard at some point during the voyage.  Your quest is to retrieve Henry the Navigator's Missing Maps and bring them back here."

"Thank you Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes the story. "So tell us, where are the Maps?"
Olmec replies:
"Henry the Navigator's Missing Maps can be found in the Room of the Secret Password."

"Teams," Kirk begins, walking down the steps, "you are now standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a minute, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're first, your step will light up, and you'll have three seconds to answer.  If you're right, you're gonna move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance to answer.  The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Olmec, we're now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
"Was Henry the Navigator from: Italy, Portugal—?"
Danny stomps down first: "Portugal…?"
"Correct," replies Olmec.
"Step on down!" Kirk commands. "Orange Iguanas are on the board.  Olmec, let's hear the next question."

Olmec asks:
"Did Henry open a school to train young men—"
Chris buzzes in very early, and Ntombi struggles with an answer: "Um… he trained them to become explorers…?"
"Correct," Olmec answers, so the Silver Snakes go down to the second step.

Olmec now asks:
"What is the capital of Portugal: Coimbra, Lisbon, or Oporto?"
Katherine rings in: "Uhh… O… Porto…?"
"That is incorrect," Olmec replies, so then Amber stomps down and guesses:
"Lisbon…?"
"That is correct," replies Olmec, allowing the Orange Iguanas to move down again.
"They realize they're now only one step away from the Temple Games," Kirk explains. "But we're lookin' for two teams.  Olmec, next question."

Olmec now asks:
"Which of these is an instrument used by explorers: A cutlass, A carcass, or A compass?"
Richie buzzes in: "A compass."
"Correct," says Olmec, and the Purple Parrots can move down a step.
"The Red Jaguars can still catch up," Kirk narrates. "Olmec, next question."

Olmec then asks:
"Which of these was a Portuguese colony: Spain, Brazil, or Jamaica?"
Danny gongs in: "Brazil…?"
"That is correct!" Olmec shouts, and the Orange Iguanas get to move down to the bottom step.
"We've got our first team movin' on to the Temple Games," Kirk explains, "but who's gonna join them: the Purple Parrots, the Silver Snakes or the Red Jaguars? Olmec, next question."

Olmec asks:
"Which of these men was trained by Henry the Navigator: Bartolomeu Dias, Vasco da Gama, or Vasco de Balboa?"
After a couple seconds, Adam buzzes in: "Vasco de Balboa…?"
"Incorrect," Olmec replies.
Then Katherine rings in and struggles with pronunciation again: "Vash-ka de Gamma…?"
"That is correct," Olmec answers, and the Purple Parrots can step down again.
"The Purple Parrots're only one step away from the Temple Games," Kirk comments. "There's still time for the other teams to catch up.  Olmec, continue."

Olmec does so by asking:
"After Vasco da Gama set sail with Henry's Maps, was he going to go to: China, India, or Africa?"
Ntombi steps in first: "India…?"
"That is correct," answers Olmec, and the Silver Snakes move down a step.
"We got a tie on the second-to-last step," Kirk narrates. "Red Jaguars can still catch up.  Next question."

Olmec now asks:
"As Vasco da Gama was sailing toward India, did the maps—?"
Richie rings in: "Uh… they, they… blew off the side of the ship and now they're in the Temple."
"THAT IS CORRECT!" Olmec yells, and the audience bursts into applause as the Purple Parrots move down to the bottom step.
"We've got our two teams!" Kirk announces. "The Purple Parrots and the Orange Iguanas! They'll be goin' head-to-head in the Temple Games! Red Jaguars and Silver Snakes gave it a good effort too.  They're not goin' away empty-handed, we've got a great gift for them and here's what it is." Adam, Chris, Trista and Ntombi will each be receiving a copy of Zathura on DVD.

"Now, the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, so let's get to know our two tough teams. On the Purple Parrots, we have Katherine, she likes swimming and wants to travel the world, and Richie, he likes drawing and wants to be a comic artist. Let's hear it for the Purple Parrots!" The audience applauds for a moment.
"And on the Orange Iguanas, we have Amber, she likes to read and wants to be a singer, and Danny plays basketball and wants to turn pro. Let's hear it for the Orange Iguanas!" The audience applauds again.

"Why don't you go get ready for the Temple Games," Kirk says, "while I tell you guys what's gonna happen here. Now, in the Temple Games, these teams will be competing to win Pendants of Life. The winning team will need the Pendants to protect ourselves from those dreaded Temple Guards when we make our way to Olmec's Temple. There are three Temple Games, and Olmec will tell us about Temple Game #1."

Olmec begins:
"Henry the Navigator traveled the world and made maps of the places he sailed. In this game, you must piece together a map for him. When Kirk gives the signal, crawl to the first cube, grab the first segment of the map, then crawl back with it and place it on your board. Then crawl out to retrieve the next section of the map. During your voyages, you must avoid the swinging obstacles.
"The first player to retrieve all four pieces of the map— or the one that's grabbed the most sections of their map in 60 seconds— wins."
The camera fades to Kirk. "Henry the Navigator used to make maps just like this," he says. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock. On your mark, get set, GO!"
Amber and Katherine crawl out, but are hit by the swinging sandbags almost immediately. They both grab the first sections of their maps on the second time around, and from then on in, either both players are struck by the obstacles or one grabs a piece of the map whereas the other one is hit. They both have seven tries before the ceiling lights flash to end the game.
"All right!" Kirk shouts, running over to declare the winner. "Great job by both players here. Orange Iguanas got three, Purple Parrots got three— it's a tie! They each get the half Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds for a moment. "The next game's also worth a half Pendant, let's check it out. Olmec, tell us about it."

Olmec continues:
"The explorers trained by Henry the Navigator began to claim many lands for Portugal. Here you must claim a land in honor of Henry the Navigator. When Kirk gives the signal, sail out from the dock and, without touching the water, jump out to plant your flag on the island. Then, sail back and run back up the dock.
"The first player to mount their flag and get both feet on the dock— or the one that's furthest along after 30 seconds— wins."
"Let's put 30 seconds on the clock," says Kirk, and the clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen. "We got a tie, half Pendant apiece. On your mark, get set, GO!"
Danny and Richie sail out across the floor to the islands and plant the flags without even getting out of their boats. Danny has some trouble turning around, however, and so Richie gets back up on the dock only a couple seconds before him and ends the game with 5 seconds left.
"Whoo! Close one there!" Kirk comments. "But Purple Parrots got back first, so they get another half Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds again. "So Purple Parrots have a full Pendant, Orange Iguanas have a half, but this third game is with a full Pendant. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3."

Olmec narrates:
"After Henry the Navigator died, Portugal began trading with several faraway countries. Here you and your partner will ship those countries' treasures back to Portugal. When Kirk gives the signal, grab a gold artifact and run out to meet your partner at the middle of the path. Then pass the gold treasure to your partner, who will slide back and place it in your team's treasure box. Then go back and try it again.
"The team with the most pieces of gold in their treasure box after 60 seconds wins."
"This'll decide who goes to the Temple," Kirk reminds the audience. "Let's set the clock for 60 seconds. On your mark, get set, GO!"
The players grab onto the raised sides of the tracks and walk against the force of the bungee cords attaching them to the walls behind them. The cord are only just long enough so that the players can meet in the middle, so this game proves to be harder than it appeared at first glance. However, the teams did score a few times before the ceiling lights flash to end the game.
"Okay," Kirk says as he walks into the space between the tracks and peers into the treasure boxes. As soon as the spotters unfasten the kids, they run over to join him. "Purple Parrots got one, two, three… four pieces of gold, Orange Iguanas got one, two, three, four, five… six pieces of gold! Orange Iguanas get the full Pendant, that gives them a Pendant and a half, the Purple Parrots had a full Pendant. The Orange Iguanas are goin' to the Temple!" Danny and Amber high-five each other and then Amber jumps up and down, excited. "Purple Parrots gave it a gallant effort. We've got a great gift for them, and here's what it is." Richie and Katherine will each be receiving a $100 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Nike.

"Olmec!" calls Kirk. "These Orange Iguanas have proven themselves worthy and've earned the right to enter your Temple. But before they go, can you give them any hints to help them retrieve Henry the Navigator's Missing Maps?"
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You could start by climbing through the Ledges and climbing down into the Great Chasm. Crawl through the chasm, then race into the Throne Room. Sit on the Throne of the Pretender and you could choose to go up into the Burial Pit, or into the Junction of the Secret Shafts. If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Switch Inferno. Find the correct actuator to go upstairs, or plow through the wall and into the Quicksand Bog.
"Next, climb the Pharaoh's Secret Passage up into the Room of the Secret Password, where you can grab Henry the Navigator's Missing Maps. Find the tablet with the right password and shout it out to open the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room of the Ancient Warriors. Place yourself in the correct armor, but be careful— one of the suits of armor could be possessed by the spirit of a Temple Guard! If they grab you, you'll have to give up a Pendant of Life! Next, race up to the King's Storeroom, smash the clay pots to find the key, then swing on the rope across the Great Chasm. Then, pass through the Vault, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone." Olmec pauses for a second here. "You won 1 ½ Pendants in the Temple Games. Who's going first?"
"I am!" Amber replies eagerly.
"Very well, Amber," says Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "Good luck to both of you."

"All right then," Kirk says, beginning to explain the rules. "When I say 'go,' you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way toward the Missing Maps. Be careful though— inside the Temple there are many locked doors and dead ends. But to make up for this, there are three old shafts somewhere in the Temple. If you can find one and it's open, you can jump in and slide down to the Junction of the Secret Shafts. Also beware, because in the Temple there are also Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. If you enter one of those rooms, a Temple Guard will jump out and grab you. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple— and it'll be Danny's turn to enter and try his luck. Now, you have a Pendant and a half, but hidden inside the Temple is the other half of your Pendant. If you can find it and you're carrying the other half you'll get an extra life. If you can reach the Maps, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. You'll have three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded— and here's how!"
• For just making it into the Temple, Danny and Amber will each get a Regent sports package worth about $500.
• If they can reach the Maps before three minutes is up, they'll also win $1,000 Toys 'R' Us gift cards.
• If they can bring Henry the Navigator's Missing Maps out of the Temple before three minutes is up, they'll each win four tickets for a seven-day Caribbean cruise!

"Just think, you could do a lot of reading in the Caribbean," Kirk says to Amber. "So, tell us, what's your strategy? How do you think you're gonna get the Maps?"
"Um… well I'm gonna go up," Amber explains, "then jump down go straight through the bottom, and climb up the slide thingy, grab the Maps and run right back through the top."
"All right, let's see if that works out for you guys," Kirk says. "Mouthpieces in. Lower the gate, Olmec!"
Olmec moans as he lowers the gate.
"And let's set the clock… for three minutes. On your mark, get set, GO!"

"There she goes! Up into the Temple with 2 Pendants!" Kirk shouts as Amber jogs up the steps and enters the Vault. She slowly turns the safe wheel using two hands, and when the door to the Great Chasm slams open she walks through and jumps down into the gap. She stumbles trying to walk over the foam blocks, but she makes it onto the Throne of the Pretender with 2:22 left. The Throne spins around a little more slowly than usual, but it doesn't get stopped up and so Amber still makes it into the Junction of the Secret Shafts with plenty of time. She then walks across the room and has to try the actuators for both doors leading into the Switch Inferno, but as soon as she sets foot in the next room out comes the first TEMPLE GUARD!
Amber shrieks twice, hands the Temple Guard her Pendant of Life, then proceeds to hit the actuators with 1:38 remaining. She tries a few on the wall next to the breakaway rock wall before Kirk shouts:
"Just bust through the wall! Break open the wall!" Amber walks over to the stone wall, gently pushes it with her hands to make sure it can be broken down, then walks through the stone wall into the Quicksand Bog. "Go! Go! Up the Pharaoh's Slide!" Kirk calls. Amber slowly scales the Pharaoh's Secret Passage and crawls into the Room of the Secret Password with about 1:09 left. She grabs the MISSING MAPS on one of the pedestals in the front of the room, then jogs back across the top floor as time begins to run out.
"There she goes again!" Kirk yells as the audience begins cheering louder and chanting "GO! GO! GO!" over and over. "Back through the Shrines of the Silver Monkey— back through the Ancient Warriors— the King's Storeroom, the room where she came in from— grab that rope!" Amber reaches for the rope dangling over the Great Chasm with about 41 seconds left, then swings across with the Maps still in hand. Amber then jogs back through the Vault and down the stairs to record the win with 21 seconds left!
"They did it! They got it all! With what, 30 seconds left!" Kirk shouts as Amber hugs Danny for a second. "Amber, how did you do that? That was amazing!"
"Dunno," Amber replies, "all the doors opened and, um, I did it."
"You guys did great all day long," Kirk says, "and you're takin' it all home. They got the sports packages, the Toys 'R' Us gift cards— they're goin' for the Caribbean! We gotta get outta here. I don't wanna, but we have to. So join us next time for another great legend of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!" Amber hugs Kirk, who holds the Maps in the air for all to see. Danny then high-fives Amber as the credits roll.

Re: Rediscovery EP: Henry the Navigator's Missing Maps
« Reply #4 on: January 10, 2007, 03:46:28 PM »
Episode Summary
Episode 19: Henry the Navigator's Missing Maps

Name of Artifact: Henry the Navigator's Missing Maps
Season: 1
Layout: 4
Result: Made it!
Time Remaining: 0:21
Team: Orange Iguanas
Pendants Won: 1 ½
Location of Artifact: The Room of the Secret Password

Without a doubt, this was the easiest layout in Season 1 of The Rediscovery.  It only required players to enter seven rooms to get to the Missing Maps, and almost all of the rooms had "hit the actuator" objectives.  This was also the first solo win in the show's tenure, though the producers probably designed it that way to make it more likely that a solo win would occur before the season ended.

Amber did have a good strategy in mind— jumping down into the Great Chasm from the Vault, then traveling along the bottom floor and climbing up the Pharaoh's Secret Passage into the Room of the Secret Password— but she was ridiculously slow.  In fact, it even took her nine seconds to get from next to Kirk to the safe wheel in the Vault.  When she grabbed the Maps, she made absolutely no effort to speed up, but she still passed back through the Temple Gate to record the first solo victory with 21 seconds on the clock.  It was an easy design, but either way, the team did win.

Trivia and Records:
Although this was not the first solo run of the series— that distinction goes to "The Feathered Headdress of Powhatan," back in Layout II— this was the first and only solo victory in Season 1.  As Amber ran into the Temple, Kirk commented that the team had two Pendants of Life when in fact they only had one and a half.  He probably confused this Orange Iguanas team with the one in "The Royal Crown of Louis XIV," who had won two full Pendants.  Also, this episode made the Orange Iguanas the only team to win more than once in the first season, although it also marked their last victory until Season 3.
