Rediscovery EP: The Royal Crown of Louis XIV
« on: January 07, 2007, 02:05:35 PM »
Author's Note: This is one of the episodes of my independent project, Legends: The Rediscovery.  More information on the project can be found by following this link.

Episode 18: The Royal Crown of Louis XIV

The camera maneuvers through a thick, lush rainforest to stop in front of an ancient temple. A giant stone head next to the gate of the temple begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk descends into view on a rope. "Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple. The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Which legend are we gonna hear about today?"

Olmec replies:
"The legend of the Royal Crown of Louis XIV."

"Ooh, the Royal Crown of Louis XIV!" Kirk says in response. "Well the legend is set, and one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the Royal Crown. Will it be:
"Matt and Kristin of the Red Jaguars—" the camera pans to each team in order—
"Josh and Jessica of the Blue Barracudas,
"Dane and Elisa of the Green Monkeys,
"Kyle and Annie of the Orange Iguanas,
"Bryan and Summer of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Tony and Gabriela of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple. First, they must cross the moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today:
"In front of each team an aged vine bridge has fallen across the Moat. When I say 'go,' one player on each team will walk onto the lower vine in the middle and hold onto the side vines with their hands. Remember, there's a break in the middle vine, and if your feet touch the water when you try to jump over the gap, you'll have to go back and try again. When the first player steps onto the deck, it's their partner's turn to get on the bridge."
"When both players are on the deck at the other end of the Moat, run over and hit the gong." He slams down on the Red Jaguars' gong to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round, so let's get started. Hey teams— are you ready?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Monsieur Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"Oui oui!" Olmec shouts as a response.
"Allrighty then," Kirk replies. "On your mark, get set, GO!"

The players go across the Moat on the brown-felt-covered wires at more or less the same rate, except for the girl on the Silver Snakes, who makes it to the break in the middle vine before the others pass the halfway mark. The ends of the middle wire are held up by tying them to the other wires, and although it's not too hard to avoid touching the water with your feet, Gabriela of the Silver Snakes touches when she fails to get both feet on the last part of the middle wire after jumping the gap. Only two seconds after she starts going back down the bridge again, the girl on the Blue Barracudas falls in too. Then the girl on the Red Jaguars gets across, followed by the first players of the Orange Iguanas and Green Monkeys.
The girl on the Silver Snakes does better jumping the gap this time, and she makes it across about ten seconds after the Green Monkeys' first player does. The boy on the Purple Parrots makes it over just a few moments before the boys on the Orange Iguanas and Red Jaguars make it across and hits their teams' gongs. The first player on the Blue Barracudas finally makes it across, but it's too little too late— the Silver Snakes and Green Monkeys bang their gongs before the boy on the Blue Barracudas can make any decent progress.
"That's it! We've got our four teams right here!" Kirk announces just before the Purple Parrots can hit their gong. "Red Jaguars blazed over the Moat! They're going on to the Steps of Knowledge, and so are the Green Monkeys—" the camera pans to each qualifying team in order— "and the Orange Iguanas— and the Silver Snakes! Blue Barracudas and Purple Parrots gave it a great effort too. We've got a nice gift for them for playing and here's what it is." Josh, Summer, Jessica and Bryan will each receive a copy of Zathura on DVD.

The four teams are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the Royal Crown of Louis XIV.  But pay attention teams, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you one step closer to Olmec's Temple."

Olmec begins to tell the story:
"In the mid-1600's, the biggest threat to the royal family of France was the aristocrats' rebellion called the Fronde.  Mobs marched through the streets of Paris and smashed the windows of the royal supporters' houses.  legend has it that one day the French regent Anne of Austria had enough.
" 'Oh, sacre bleu!' Anne shouted and called her advisor Mazarin. 'What are we going to do?'
" 'I do not know 'ow we can stop zees, Madame,' replied Mazarin. 'Ze armies, zey are losing.'
"Just then, Anne's teenage son, Louis XIV, appeared in the doorway.
" 'I zink I know what to do,' said Louis. 'We appoint ze most experianced men to lead our armies, and zey can stop ze rebels where zey are.'
" 'Zat may be ze best idea since French bread!' Mazarin said. 'Let's try eet, Anne.  Louis, my boy, eef zees works I've got quite ze gift for vous.'
"Anne and Mazarin took Louis's advice, and the Fronde was stopped.  The very next day, Mazarin presented Louis with his royal crown.  Louis ruled France for about 60 years, and when he finally died, the crown made its way to the Temple.  Your quest is to retrieve the Royal Crown of Louis XIV and bring it back here."

"Thanks Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the story. "So tell us, where is the Royal Crown?"
Olmec replies:
"The Royal Crown of Louis XIV can be found in the Throne Room."

"Teams," Kirk begins, walking down the steps, "you are now standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a minute, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're first, your step will light up, and you'll have three seconds to answer.  If you're right, you're gonna move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance to answer.  The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Olmec, we're all ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
"Was Louis XIV the king of—?"
Matt stomps down first: "France…?"
"Correct," Olmec replies.
"Step on down!" Kirk says, and the Red Jaguars move down to the second step. "Red Jaguars are on the board.  Next question, Olmec."

Olmec asks:
"Louis gave his mother a plan to stop: The aristocrats' rebellion—?"
Elisa rings in: "Uhh… nobles' rebellion…?"
"Correct," Olmec replies, and the Green Monkeys move down one step as well.

Olmec now asks:
"Was the aristocrats' rebellion called: The French Revolution, The Fronde, or The Freedom Fight?"
Matt buzzes in: "The… Fronde…?"
"That is correct," replies Olmec, and the Red Jaguars move down again.
"Red Jaguars are now only one step away from the Temple Games, but we're lookin' for two teams," says Kirk. "Next question."

Olmec asks:
"Was Louis's mother: Anne of Austria, Anne of Cleves, or Anne of Kiev?"
Kristin gongs in: "Anne of Austria…?"
"That is correct!" Olmec shouts, and the Red Jaguars move down to the bottom step.
"Red Jaguars are goin' to the Temple Games," Kirk says, "but who'll join them: the Green Monkeys, Orange Iguanas or Silver Snakes? Next question."

Olmec then asks:
"Was Anne's advisor named: Marquis, Machiavelli, or Mazarin?"
Gabriela rings in, but has trouble saying the name right: "Mass-a-wrong…?"
"Correct," Olmec answers, and the Silver Snakes go down one step.
"Orange Iguanas can still catch up," Kirk says. "Next question, Mr. Olmec."

Olmec then asks:
"Which of these was a French palace that was later turned into a museum: The Alhambra, Buckingham Palace, or The Louvre?"
After a second, Kyle stomps down first: "The Louvre…?"
"Correct," Olmec replies, and the Orange Iguanas go down to the second step.
"All right, it's all tied up on the second step," Kirk comments. "Olmec, next question."

Olmec now asks:
"The day after the Fronde was stopped, did Mazarin give Louis: The Royal Crown, A gold scepter, or A portrait of him?"
Annie rings in: "The Royal Crown of Louis XIV…?"
"That is correct," Olmec answers, and the Orange Iguanas move down to the second-to-last step.
"Orange Iguanas realize they're only one step away from the Temple Games," Kirk says. "But the other teams can catch up.  Olmec, continue."

Olmec does so by asking:
"Which of these were swordsmen living in feudal France: The Knights of the Round Table, The Three Musketeers, or The samurai?"
Kyle stomps down first: "The Three Musketeers…?"
"That is correct!" Olmec shouts, and the Orange Iguanas join the Red Jaguars on the bottom step.
"We've got our two teams!" Kirk announces. "Goin' on the Temple Games are the Orange Iguanas and the Red Jaguars! Green Monkeys and Silver Snakes gave it a great effort too.  They're not goin' away empty-handed, we've got a great gift for them and here's what it is." Dane, Elisa, Tony and Gabriela will each be receiving a $50 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Nestle.

"Now," says Kirk, "the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, so let's get to know our two teams. On the Red Jaguars, we have Kristin. How old are you?"
"Twelve," Kristin replies.
"And I understand you collect baseball cards," Kirk reads on his index card. "How'd you get into that?"
"Well, I have two older brothers, Kaleb and Keith," explains Kristin, "and they've been collecting them for years and now they got me into it."
"How big's your collection?" Kirk asks.
"Um… a lot, prob'ly… 150," Kristin replies. "Mostly Nomar Garciaparras and Pedro Martinez."
"And Matt, it says here you like to go mountain climbing but you also play bass in a rock band. Does the band have a name?"
"Uhh… not yet," Matt replies.
"Let's hear it for the Red Jaguars!" Kirk shouts, and the audience applauds. "But on the Orange Iguanas, we have Annie. Now, you're into swimming and hanging out at the mall, but you want to be a lawyer. Why's that?"
"Well… um… it makes… alot of money," Annie replies.
"And Kyle, and I hear you're into tae kwon do and wanna be a quarterback in the NFL," Kirk reads. "You play football now?"
"Yeah, I mean, nothin' wrong with gettin' a jump start on a career, right?" Kyle replies.
"Let's hear it for the Orange Iguanas!" Kirk shouts, and the audience applauds again.

"Why don't you go get ready for the Temple Games," Kirk says, "while I tell you guys what's gonna happen here. Now, in the Temple Games, these teams will be competing to win Pendants of Life. The winning team will need the Pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards when they go to Olmec's Temple. There are three Temple Games, and Monsieur Olmec will tell us about Temple Game #1."

Olmec begins:
"During the Fronde, the aristocrats smashed the windows of the palace with huge boulders. Here you must perform a similar feat of different proportions. When Kirk gives the signal, grab a ball, walk as far down the track as you can and try to throw the ball through the ring at the end of the track. If you get one in the ring, you win a point. The player who's scored the most points at the end of 60 seconds wins."
The camera fades to Kirk. "I think they used to train for those big battles just like this," he says. "Let's set the clock for 60 seconds. On your marks teams, get set, GO!"
Matt and Kyle walk down the track, but the bungee cords are very hard to fight against. The boys keep being pulled back before they can make it anywhere down the track, and when they do make it about as far as possible, they can't seem to get the ball in through the hole. The first successful shots are launched only a few seconds before the ceiling lights flash to end the game.
"Okay, that's it!" Kirk announces, running over to count the scores. "Red Jaguars got one, Orange Iguanas got one. It's a tie— they each get the half Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds for a moment. "The next game is worth a half Pendant too. Olmec, will you tell us about it?"

Olmec continues:
"Louis XIV had to stop the Fronde by rearranging the armies. In this game, you must play the role of the armies during the Fronde. When Kirk gives the signal, lob a cannonball at one of the soldiers on the wall. Then put another cannonball in the slingshot and do it again.
"The first player to knock down all four soldiers— or the one who's knocked over the most soldiers after 60 seconds— wins."
"It's gonna be bombs away here in a second, so let me just get outta the way," Kirk says, running over to the sidelines. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock. On your marks, get set, GO!"
Kristin and Annie lock and load, and Kristin knocks a target down on the first try. Annie soon catches up, however. The girls are neck-and-neck all the way through, and they each get in twelve tries before the ceiling lights flash to end the game.
"Well, it looks like Red Jaguars knocked down two, Orange Iguanas had two! It's another tie— we gotta give both teams the half Pendant of life again!" The audience applauds for a moment. "So it's all tied up a full Pendant apiece, but this next game is worth a full Pendant. Olmec, tell us about it."

Olmec narrates:
"Louis ruled France for about sixty years, and he received many great gifts. In this game, you will be looking for just four. When Kirk gives the signal, crawl to the first cube, grab the first treasure, then crawl back with it and place it in your bin. Then your partner will crawl out to retrieve the next treasure. Along the way you must avoid the swinging obstacles.
"The first player to retrieve all four treasures— or the one that's gathered the most treasures within 60 seconds— wins."
The camera fades to Kirk. "Whoever wins this goes to the Temple," he says. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock. On your mark, get set, GO!"
The boys crawl out first, but both are hit by obstacles almost immediately. The girls are pretty slow on their first try, but only Annie returns with the gold ball. It takes the Red Jaguars a few more turns to score. Both teams get in eight tries before the ceiling lights flash to end the game.
"Okay," Kirk says, running over. "Red Jaguars got only one, but Orange Iguanas got two!" He pulls out the gold ball and scepter to show the audience. "They get the full Pendant, that gives them two, Red Jaguars had a full Pendant. The Orange Iguanas are goin' to the Temple!" Kyle and Annie hug each other for a second, then high-five. "Red Jaguars gave it a great effort too. They're not goin' away empty-handed, here's what we've got for them." Matt and Kristin will each be receiving a prize package from British Knights.

"Olmec!" calls Kirk. "Kyle and Annie now have proven themselves worthy and now have earned the right to enter your Temple. But before they go, can you give them any clues to help them retrieve the Royal Crown of Louis XIV?"
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You could start by climbing through the Ledges and climbing down into the Great Chasm. Crawl through the chasm, then race into the Throne Room, where you can grab the Royal Crown of Louis XIV. Sit on the Throne of the Pretender and you could choose to go up into the Burial Pit, or into the Junction of the Secret Shafts. If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Switch Inferno. Find the correct actuator to go upstairs, or plow through the wall and into the Quicksand Bog.
"Next, climb the Pharaoh's Secret Passage up into the Room of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the right password and shout it out to open the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room of the Ancient Warriors. Place yourself in the correct armor, but be careful— one of the suits of armor could be possessed by the spirit of a Temple Guard! If they grab you, you'll have to give up a Pendant of Life! Next, race up to the King's Storeroom, smash the clay pots to find the key, then swing on the rope across the Great Chasm. Then, pass through the Vault, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone." Olmec pauses for a second here. "You won 2 Pendants in the Temple Games. Who's going first?"
"I am!" shouts Annie eagerly.
"Very well, Annie," replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "Good luck to both of you."

"All right then," Kirk says, beginning to explain the rules. "When I say 'go,' you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way toward the Crown. Be careful though— inside the Temple there are many locked doors and dead ends. But to make up for this, there are three old shafts somewhere in the Temple. If you can find one and it's open, you can jump in and slide down to the Junction of the Secret Shafts. Also beware, because in the Temple there are also Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. If you enter one of those rooms, a Temple Guard will jump out and grab you. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple— and it'll be Kyle's turn to enter and try his luck. If you can reach the Crown, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will disappear. Return through the gates with the Royal Crown of Louis XIV in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded— and here's how!"
• For just making it into the Temple, Kyle and Annie will each get a Bollinger-brand trampoline.
• If they can reach the Crown before three minutes is up, they'll also win XBOX 360 game packages, complete with two new games.
• If they can bring the Royal Crown of Louis XIV out of the Temple before three minutes is up, they'll each win four tickets for a seven-day Caribbean cruise!

"The Caribbean, let's get 'em there!" Kirk says, excited. "By the way, Annie, what's your strategy?"
"Well, um, I'm goin' up to the room with the safe thing," Annie says, pointing to the Vault, "then I'm goin' to the big pit room and just gonna try the door down there. And if that doesn't work, I'll go that sarcophagus room and maybe I'll be able to climb down from there."
"Well let's see if that works out," Kirk says. "Mouthpieces in. Lower the gate, Olmec!"
Olmec moans as he lowers the gate.
"And let's set the clock… for three minutes. On your mark, get set, GO!"

Annie races up into the Vault, but slows down when she has to try to spin the safe wheel. The door to the Great Chasm slams open, and she jumps down into the pit to try the door into the Throne Room. Unfortunately, that door doesn't open, so she'll have to climb up the wall and try another door to leave the Great Chasm. After falling off the wall once, Annie slowly climbs up to the ledge, hits the actuator for the door into the Burial Pit and leaves the Great Chasm with 2:06 left. She opens the sarcophagus and tries to climb down, but unfortunately, the door downward doesn't open. Annie stands around confused.
"You have to grab a key from a sarcophagus!" Kirk shouts to a clueless Annie. She then stands in the sarcophagus, reaches for the key, grabs it and tries it on the door to go on into the Room of the Ancient Warriors. (1:33) After she crawls through the small tunnel, she looks for a suit of armor to enter and almost tries the camera-right one. However, she changes her mind and goes to the camera-left armor instead. Luckily for her, it's the right one, and the door opens into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey with about 1:14 left. She grabs the pieces of the statue one at a time, then puts them in place and completes the statue. She sees the door directly into the Quicksand Bog, but changes her mind and goes into the Room of the Secret Password.
"She's only a couple rooms away!" Kirk shouts as Annie enters the Room of the Secret Password with a brief 36 seconds left. "And no Temple Guards yet! Can she do it?"
"Go Annie Go!" Kyle shouts from the sidelines as Annie opens the first cabinet and pulls out her mouthpiece. She leaves the tablet in the cabinet and says: "Long Live Olmec!" She looks around, and then shouts again: "LONG LIVE OLMEC!" It works— the door to the Pharaoh's Secret Passage opens up, and Annie slides down to the Quicksand Bog where she finally meets the first TEMPLE GUARD! Annie hands in her Pendant of Life, then she wades over to the rock wall into the Switch Inferno. But before she can hit any of the actuators on the walls, out jumps the second TEMPLE GUARD!
Kyle races up the stairs and into the Vault. He enters the Great Chasm and reaches out for the rope— but we're out of time!
"No! It's too late!" Kirk says. "Too bad Annie ran into those Temple Guards, she cleared out a major path. They still get the trampolines, and we gotta get outta here. Join us next time for another adventure and another great legend of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!"

Episode Summary
Episode 18: The Royal Crown of Louis XIV

Name of Artifact: The Royal Crown of Louis XIV
Season: 1
Layout: 4
Result: Failed acquisition
Team: Orange Iguanas
Pendants Won: 2
Location of Artifact: The Throne Room

The first season of The Rediscovery included several runs where the Temple Guards didn't appear until only a couple rooms away from the artifact.  Unfortunately for the Orange Iguanas here, Annie was one of the slowest and most indecisive contestants of Season 1.  She hesitated in multiple rooms, and cost her team even more time because she changed her mind about which room to enter from the Shrine of the Silver Monkey.  When she was removed by the second consecutive Temple Guard in the Switch Inferno, Kyle only had enough time to enter the Great Chasm.  Pitiful.

Trivia and Records:
Annie might have evaded a Temple Spirit hiding in the middle suit of armor in the Room of the Ancient Warriors— the gauntlets appeared to move slightly even before she walked past the armor. Her eventual capture signaled the latest follow-up runner entry in any Season 1 team run— Kyle was left with only thirteen seconds to work with.
