Rediscovery EP: The Holy Ankh of the Egyptian Deity
« on: January 02, 2007, 10:39:55 AM »
Author's Note: This is one of the episodes of my independent project, Legends: The Rediscovery.  More information on the project can be found by following this link.

Episode 16: The Holy Ankh of the Egyptian Deity

The camera maneuvers through a thick, lush rainforest to stop in front of an ancient temple. A giant stone head next to the gate of the temple begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg!"

On this final word, Kirk descends into view on a rope. "Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple. The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Which legend are we gonna hear about today?"

Olmec replies:
"The legend of the Holy Ankh of the Egyptian Deity."

"Ooh, the Holy Ankh of the Egyptian Deity!" Kirk says in response. "Well one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the Holy Ankh. Will it be:
"Justin and Mandy of the Red Jaguars—" the camera pans to each team in order—
"Zack and Nadine of the Blue Barracudas,
"Jackson and Lyndsay of the Green Monkeys,
"Nick and K.T. of the Orange Iguanas,
"David and Stephanie of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Bryan and Melissa of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple. First, they must cross the moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today:
"In front of each team a long net has fallen across the Moat. When I say 'go,' one player on each team will climb onto one side of the net, and then their partner's gonna climb on the other side and they'll make their way across together. Careful though, if either one of you falls, you'll both have to start over again.
"When both players get off the net on the other end of the Moat, you'll run over and hit the gong." He slams down on the Red Jaguars' gong to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round, so teams— are you ready?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"Yeeeeeeeeeees," Olmec says eerily.
"Okay," Kirk laughs. "On your mark, get set, GO!"

The teams go at whatever pace they can to avoid making a mistake and falling into the Moat. The Blue Barracudas get off their net when the other teams are just passing the halfway mark. The girl on the Green Monkeys slips off her net when she and her partner are almost at the end, forcing them to go back. Orange Iguanas are the second team across. Silver Snakes are the third team to hit their gong.
The Purple Parrots fall into the Moat near the end and have to start over, and a few moments later, so do the Red Jaguars. Purple Parrots fall in again a few seconds later, and then the Green Monkeys fall in as well. The Red Jaguars fall in a second time as the mist over the Moat begins to disappear. Then the Purple Parrots finally cross without falling in and steal the fourth position.
"Whoo!" shouts Kirk. "That was a long Moat, but we've got our four teams right here! Blue Barracudas blazed across the Moat. They're goin' on to the Steps of Knowledge, along with the Orange Iguanas—" the camera pans to each qualifying team in order— "and the Purple Parrots— and the Silver Snakes! Red Jaguars and Green Monkeys gave it a great effort too. We've got a great gift for them for playing and here's what it is." Justin, Mandy, Jackson and Lyndsay will each be receiving a $50 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Nestle.

The four teams are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the Holy Ankh of the Egyptian Deity.  But pay attention teams, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you one step closer to Olmec's Temple."

Olmec begins to tell the story:
"Over 3500 years ago in Egypt, the biggest threat to the pharaohs were the wild Hyksos.  The Egyptian forces didn't stand a chance against the Hyksos, what with their inventions like the bow and the horse-drawn chariot.  So the Hyksos rushed in to Egypt from west Asia and overthrew the pharaoh Ahmose.
" 'You have to throw them out, sire!' shouted one of Ahmose's servants.
" 'Those savages don't belong on the throne!' screamed another.
"But Ahmose just ran from one corner of the room to the next, saying:
" 'Oh my god, oh my god…'
"Just then the sky-god and king of the Egyptian gods Amun appeared.  Ahmose stopped where he was and bowed to Amun.
" 'I'll help you get rid of the Hyksos,' said Amun. 'As proof of my loyalty, I give you this.'
"Amun gave Ahmose a golden ankh and the idea for a battle plan to drive the Hyksos out of Egypt for good.  It worked, and Ahmose won back his place on the throne.  As a reminder of how Amun helped him win back the throne, Ahmose kept the ankh with him every day until he died.  legend has it that grave robbers stole the ankh, but they dropped it during a sandstorm and it disappeared… until now.  Your quest is to retrieve the Holy Ankh of the Egyptian Deity and bring it back here."

"Thanks Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the story. "So tell us, where is the Ankh?"
Olmec replies:
"The Holy Ankh of the Egyptian Deity can be found in the Burial Pit."

"Teams," Kirk begins, walking down the steps, "you are now standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a minute, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're first, your step will light up, and you'll have three seconds to answer.  If you're right, you're gonna move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance to answer.  The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  All right Olmec, we're now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
"What pharaoh did the Hyksos force off the throne: Ahmose, Thutmose, or King Tut?"
K.T. rings in: "Ahmose…?"
"Correct," replies Olmec, and so the Orange Iguanas can move down one level.

Olmec then asks:
"Did the Hyksos come from: Asia, Africa, or—?"
David buzzes in: "Um… Asia…?"
"Correct," Olmec answers, allowing the Purple Parrots to go to the second step.

Olmec now asks:
"What Egyptian deity appeared to help Ahmose defeat the Hyksos: Isis, Amun, or Nephthys?
K.T. stomps down first: "Amun…?"
"That is correct," Olmec replies, and the Orange Iguanas move down another step.
"Orange Iguanas are now one step away from the Temple Games, but we're lookin' for two teams," says Kirk. "Next question."

Olmec asks:
"Amun was not only the king of the Egyptian gods, but also the god of: The sun, The sky, or The afterlife?"
Nadine rings in: "The sky…?"
"Correct," replies Olmec, allowing the Blue Barracudas to move down one step.
"Silver Snakes can still catch up," Kirk narrates. "Olmec, next question."

Olmec continues:
"Today, what is the capital of Egypt: Alexandria, Luxor, or Cairo?"
Stephanie is the first to stomp down: "Cairo…?"
"That is correct," answers Olmec, and the Purple Parrots can move down to the second-to-last step.
"It's tied up on the second-to-last step," Kirk comments. "Still time for the other teams to catch up.  Next question."

Olmec asks:
"Which of these was introduced by the Hyksos: The horse-drawn chariot, The cannon, or—?"
Melissa gongs in: "Chariot…?"
"Correct," answers Olmec, and the Silver Snakes are on the board.

Olmec now asks:
"Which of these was a queen of Egypt: The Dragon Lady, Cleopatra, or Elizabeth the First?"
Nadine stomps down first: "Cleopatra."
"That is correct," replies Olmec, and the Blue Barracudas move down onto the second-to-last step.
"We've got a three-way tie on the second-to-last step," Kirk comments. "It's pretty much anybody's game now.  Olmec next question."

Olmec then asks:
"What did Amun give to Ahmose along with the Holy Ankh: A plan to drive the Hyksos out of Egypt, A sarcophagus, or His daughter's hand in marriage?"
Melissa buzzes in first: "A plan… uh… to take the Hyksos out of Egypt."
"That is correct," replies Olmec, and the Silver Snakes join the other three teams on the second-to-last step.
"The next two right answers go to the Temple Games!" Kirk announces. "Olmec, next question."

Olmec now asks:
"What desert is Egypt in—?"
Nadine buzzes in: "Sahara…?"
"That is correct!" Olmec shouts, and the Blue Barracudas can move down to the bottom step.
"All right, we've got our first team going to the Temple Games," says Kirk, "but who'll they be joined by: the Orange Iguanas, the Purple Parrots or the Silver Snakes? This could be the final question."

Olmec then asks:
"The longest river in the world flows through Egypt.  Is this river: The Amazon, The Nile—?"
Melissa buzzes in: "Nile River…?"
"That is correct!" shouts Olmec, and the Silver Snakes can join the Blue Barracudas on the bottom step.
"We've got our two teams right here!" Kirk announces. "Going on to the Temple Games are the Blue Barracudas and the Silver Snakes! Orange Iguanas and Purple Parrots gave it a great effort too.  Here's what we've got for them." Nick, David, Stephanie and K.T. will each be receiving a gift package from British Knights.
The camera zooms out from a shot of Kirk standing between the Blue Barracudas and the Silver Snakes. "These two teams will be playing for the right to enter Mr. Olmec's Temple, and they'll do it right after this!" The camera zooms in on the sarcophagus in the Burial Pit, then fades to commercial.

"Now," says Kirk, "The glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, so let's hear it for Zack and Nadine of the Blue Barracudas!" The audience applauds for a moment. "And Bryan and Melissa of the Silver Snakes!" The audience applauds again.
"You can girls go get ready for the first Temple Game, guys go get set up for the second," Kirk says, and the players walk off in different directions. "Now, in the Temple Games, teams are competing to win Pendants of Life. The winning team will need their Pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through Olmec's Temple. There are three Temple Games, and Olmec… tell us about Temple Game #1."

Olmec begins:
"Ahmose would have to arm his soldiers to battle the Hyksos. When the Hyksos introduced the bow and arrow to the Egyptians, Ahmose planned to arm his soldiers with them. You are now strapped in a rotating lever and, when Kirk gives the signal, you will run around to grab an arrow off of the pedestal. Next, return to place it in your quiver.
"The player with the most arrows in her quiver after 60 seconds wins."
The camera segues to Kirk. "They used to arm their soldiers just like this," he says. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock. On your mark, get set, GO!"
Nadine and Melissa start running and try to jump up to grab the headless arrows off the platforms. Unfortunately, they overdo it and jump too high into the air the first few times. "It's tough to find the right momentum," Kirk says as the girls finally get their first arrows and land them in the quivers. The ceiling lights flash as the girls are going around to grab another arrow.
"Okay, let's see how they did!" Kirk shouts, running over to count the scores. "Blue Barracudas got one, two… three arrows, Silver Snakes got one, two… three arrows! It's a tie— they each get the half Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds. "The next game is worth a half Pendant. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2."

Olmec continues:
"To be able to shoot a far-away target with an arrow, an archer would need to work on his aim. Here you will do just that. When Kirk gives the signal, grab a ball, run as far down the track as you can and try to throw the ball through the hole at the end of the track. If you get one in the hole, you win a point. The player who's scored the most points after 60 seconds wins."
"It's gonna take a lot of practice to get this one," Kirk comments. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock. On your mark, get set, GO!"
Zack and Bryan walk down their respective tracks holding onto the raised sides, but the bungee cords connecting them to the walls behind them only let them go about halfway to the end. They both miss getting it through their respective rings many times before the ceiling lights flash to end the game.
"Well," says Kirk, walking between the players' tracks to meet the players and read the spotters' scoreboards. "Silver Snakes didn't get a ball through the ring, but Blue Barracudas scored two! Blue Barracudas get the half Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds again. "So Blue Barracudas have a full Pendant, Silver Snakes have a half Pendant, but this is the third and final game, it's worth a full Pendant. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3."

Olmec narrates:
"Ahmose managed to defeat the Hyksos, and you are about to do the same. When Kirk gives the signal, load a cannonball in your slingshot and shoot it at one of the soldiers on the wall. Then your partner will try to knock over one of the soldiers.
"The first team to knock down all four soldiers— or the team that's knocked over the most after 60 seconds— wins."
"This is for the Temple!" Kirk shouts. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock. Let me get outta the way, don't wanna get hit. On your mark, get set, GO!"
The players miss a lot. Cannonballs either slip out of the slingshots or fly into the Moat. The Silver Snakes aren't that far off, however; their biggest problem is aiming too high. Bryan manages to knock down the furthest-right column as time began to run out, then Melissa gets the second-furthest-right one on her next try. Blue Barracudas tries to knock down two columns in one hit to catch up, but the ball keeps squeezing in between without knocking over either one. The ceiling lights flash a few seconds later.
"Okay," Kirk says as he runs over. "Blue Barracudas didn't get any, but the Silver Snakes got two. That gives them the full Pendant, gives them a Pendant and a half, the Blue Barracudas had one Pendant. The Silver Snakes are goin' to the Temple!" Bryan and Melissa high-ten each other twice. "Blue Barracudas gave it a great effort too. We've got a great gift for them for playing and here's what it is." Zack and Nadine will each be receiving a copy of Zathura on DVD.

Re: Rediscovery EP: The Holy Ankh of the Egyptian Deity
« Reply #3 on: January 02, 2007, 02:48:19 PM »
"Olmec!" calls Kirk. "The Silver Snakes have proven themselves worthy and now've earned the right to enter your Temple. But before they go, can you give them any clues about your Temple to help them retrieve the Holy Ankh?"
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You could start by climbing through the Ledges and climbing down into the Great Chasm. Crawl through the chasm, then race into the Throne Room. Sit on the Throne of the Pretender, and you could choose to go up into the Burial Pit, where you can grab the Holy Ankh of the Egyptian Deity, or go into the Junction of the Secret Shafts. If you escape, you may have a chance to enter the Chamber of the Four Columns. Knock over all the columns to go upstairs or plow through the wall and into the Quicksand Bog.
"Next, climb the Pharaoh's Secret Passage up into the Room of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the right password and shout it out to open the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room of the Ancient Warriors. Place yourself in the correct armor, but be careful— one of the suits of armor could be possessed by the spirit of a Temple Guard! If they grab you, you'll have to give up a Pendant of Life! Next, race up into the King's Storeroom, smash the clay pots to find the key, then swing on the rope back across the Great Chasm. Then, you can pass through the Vault, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone." Olmec pauses for a second here. "You won 1½ Pendants in the Temple Games. Who's going first?"
"I am," Melissa replies.
"Very well, Melissa," replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "Good luck to both of you."

"All right then," Kirk says, beginning to explain the rules. "When I say 'go,' you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way toward the Ankh. But be careful, inside the Temple there are many locked doors and dead ends. But there's three ventilation shafts somewhere in the Temple. If you can find one and it's open, you can jump in and slide down into the Junction of the Secret Shafts. In the Temple there are also Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. If you enter one of those rooms, a Temple Guard will jump out and grab you, but you can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple— and it'll be Bryan's turn to enter and try his luck. Now, you have a Pendant and a half. Hidden inside the Temple is the other half of your Pendant. If you can find it and you're carrying the other half, you'll get an extra life. If you can reach the Holy Ankh, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will disappear. And you'll have three minutes, and for your efforts you'll both be handsomely rewarded— and here's how!"
• For just making it into the Temple, Bryan and Melissa will each receive a Bollinger-brand trampoline.
• If they can get to the Holy Ankh in 3 minutes, they're both going to get a XBOX 360 game package complete with two new games.
• And if they can get the Holy Ankh out of the Temple before 3 minutes is up, they'll be going to Cancun, Mexico! Exploring ancient Mayan ruins and staying at Krystal Cancun!

"Cancun, I love it!" Kirk shouts, excited. "Let's see if we can get you to Cancun. By the way, Melissa, what's your strategy? How do you think you're gonna get to the Ankh?"
"Um… well we're gonna try going right across the big pit room," Melissa explains, "and, um, if we can't go right in there we're gonna try the room al the way up there," she says, pointing up to the King's Storeroom, "and hopefully the doors open, we're gonna go down and get the Ankh in there."
"Okay, let's see if that works," says Kirk. "Mouthpieces in, both of you. You never know when you gotta go in. Let's lower the gate, Olmec!"
Olmec moans as he lowers the gate.
"And let's set the clock… for three minutes. On your mark Melissa, get set, GO!"

Melissa runs through the Temple Gate and goes up into the Vault. She takes a second to turn the safe wheel, but once it's spinning the door leading into the Great Chasm opens. She enters the Great Chasm and leans out to grab the rope and swing across. Once she's on the other ledge, Melissa hits the actuators for the doors into the Burial Pit and the King's Storeroom, but neither one opens. So she'll have to go down into the Throne Room. (2:29) She sits on the Throne of the Pretender, and as it spins around, out from the shadows jumps the first TEMPLE GUARD!
Melissa hands the Temple Guard her Pendant, then immediately climbs up the ladder to try the door leading up into the Burial Pit. It doesn't work, so "she'll gotta go the long way around to there," in the words of Kirk Fogg. She races through the Junction of the Secret Shafts, stops for a second before running through the rock wall in the Chamber of Four Columns, and after a second in the Quicksand Bog she climbs up the ladder to try the diagonal passage. The door into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey opens, and she squeezes between the rungs of the ladder to scramble into the Shrine with 1:57 remaining. She takes up quite a bit of time putting the statue together— her biggest problems being that she drops the head in the middle of the room, and that the base is out of position at first— but she gets it with more than a minute to go.  She goes through the now-open door into the Room of the Ancient Warriors and puts herself into the camera-left suit of armor, only to be captured by a TEMPLE SPIRIT!
Bryan races up into the Temple with only a half Pendant and 1:26 still on the clock. He follows Melissa's path all the way to the Room of the Ancient Warriors in a short twenty-nine seconds, and goes to pull down the levers of the middle suit of armor. It's the right one, but unfortunately, the door to the Burial Pit doesn't open. So Bryan has to go up into the King's Storeroom, but before he can grab one of the clay pots out comes the third TEMPLE GUARD!
"Oh! It's all over!" Kirk announces. "He didn't have the other half Pendant, it's all over. He took him out with 45 seconds left! They were just one room away, but they didn't have enough Pendants. They still get to keep the trampolines, and we gotta get outta here. Join us next time for another great adventure and another great legend of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!"

Episode Summary
Episode 16: The Holy Ankh of the Egyptian Deity

Name of Artifact: The Holy Ankh of the Egyptian Deity
Season: 1
Layout: 3
Result: Triple seizure
Time Remaining: 0:45
Team: Silver Snakes
Pendants Won: 1 ½
Location of Artifact: The Burial Pit

A tough layout did a good team in here. Due to the predetermined path in this episode, the three Temple Guards were very hard to avoid. Melissa couldn't dodge the one in the Throne Room, and unfortunately she ran into a Temple Spirit in the Room of the Ancient Warriors about halfway into the run. Bryan blazed along the cleared-out path to the Room of the Ancient Warriors and completed the objective there, but unfortunately he was forced up into the King's Storeroom, where the final Temple Guard was waiting.

Kirk didn't point out the location of the half Pendant at any point in the run, and I didn't see it either. In fact, it was so well-hidden that the easiest thing to do would've been to avoid the possessed armor. Unfortunately, the wrong choice cost the team, and ended the run with what surely would've otherwise been enough time to win.

Trivia and Records:
This episode had one of the longest Moats ever, and definitely the longest of Season 1— the mist disappeared completely just before the fourth team hit their gong. Also interesting about this episode is that it is one of only a few where there is a four-way tie on the second-to-last Step of Knowledge, and the first of only a few where neither the Red Jaguars nor the Green Monkeys make it to the Steps of Knowledge.
