Rediscovery EP: The Right Nostril of the Great Sphinx
« on: December 28, 2006, 10:13:58 AM »
Author's Note: This is one of the episodes of my independent project, Legends: The Rediscovery.  More information on the project can be found by following this link.

Episode 14: The Right Nostril of the Great Sphinx

The camera maneuvers through a thick, lush rainforest to stop in front of an ancient temple. A giant stone head next to the gate of the temple begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg!"

On this final word, Kirk descends into view on a rope. "Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple. The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Which legend are we gonna hear about today?"

Olmec replies:
"The legend of the Right Nostril of the Great Sphinx."

"Ah, the Right Nostril of the Great Sphinx!" Kirk says in response. "Well the legend is set, and one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the Nostril. Will it be:
"Chris and Heather of the Red Jaguars—" the camera pans to each team in order—
"Ryan and Elizabeth of the Blue Barracudas,
"Billy and Nicole of the Green Monkeys,
"Christian and Julie of the Orange Iguanas,
"Josh and Andrea of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Zack and Marissa of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple. First, they must cross the moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today:
"Each team has four wooden planks, and in front of them are the remains of an ancient bridge. When I say 'go,' they're gonna take the planks and lay them down in order to construct a bridge. You'll both crawl out onto the planks, and then the second player will grab the plank behind them and hand it up, move on up, and keep going like that until you're both at the other side of the Moat. If either one of you falls, you'll both have to start over again.
"When both players get off the bridge on the other end of the Moat, run over and hit the gong." He slams down on the Red Jaguars' gong to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round, so teams— are you ready?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"It's go time!" Olmec shouts as an answer.
"All right," Kirk replies. "On your mark, get set, GO!"

The teams all take off fairly quickly, but along the way each team falls into the Moat at least twice— except for the Red Jaguars. They become the first team to cross successfully, followed by the Blue Barracudas, Orange Iguanas, and Green Monkeys.
"That's it! That's it!" Kirk announces. "We've got our four teams right here! Red Jaguars came over in a flash! They're going to the next round, along with the Blue Barracudas—" the camera slides along to view each winning team— "and the Green Monkeys— and the Orange Iguanas! Purple Parrots and Silver Snakes also gave it a great effort. We've got a great gift for them for playing and here's what it is." Josh, Zack, Andrea and Marissa will each be receiving a copy of King Kong on DVD.

The four teams are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the Great Nostril of the Great Sphinx.  Pay attention teams, cause your knowledge of the legend can bring you one step closer to Olmec's Temple."

Olmec begins to tell the story:
"Among the most impressive stone statues in the world is the Great Sphinx.  It was built around the same time as the Pyramids of Giza near it.  Measuring 65 feet tall, it's one of the largest statues ever constructed.  But there is something missing from it— the statue's nose has been gone for centuries.
"legend has it that Napoleon confused the statue for a monument in honor of an aspiring new emperor of France, and was outraged.
" 'We'll show this new emperor!' Napoleon shouted to his men. 'Load the cannonball!'
"Napoleon's men had exceptional aim— the first cannonball landed right on the Great Sphinx's nose and smashed it into a thousand pieces.  One of the largest pieces, part of the right nostril, made its way to the Temple.  Your quest is to retrieve the Right Nostril of the Great Sphinx and bring it back here."

"Thanks Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the story. "So tell us, where is the Right Nostril?"
Olmec replies:
"The Right Nostril of the Great Sphinx can be found in the King's Storeroom."

"Teams," Kirk begins, walking down the steps, "you are now standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a minute, Olmec will ask you a question about the legend.  If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're first, your step will light up, and you'll have three seconds to answer.  If you're right, you can move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, one of the other teams will get a chance to answer.  The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Olmec, we're now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
"Was the Great Sphinx built near: Luxor, Giza, or Aswan?"
Ryan stomps down: "Giza…?"
"Correct," replies Olmec, and so the Blue Barracudas get to move down one level.

Olmec's second question is as follows:
"Is Giza a place in: Egypt, China, or Greece?"
Ryan rings in again: "Egypt."
"That is correct," says Olmec, allowing the Blue Barracudas to move down again.

Olmec now asks:
"What happened to the Great Sphinx's nose—?"
Ryan buzzes in even before hearing the first choice, so he and Elizabeth struggle to answer:
"They— they knocked it off with a cannonball an' it broke into pieces… uh…"
"Good enough for Olmec," says Olmec, and so the Blue Barracudas go down to the very last step.
"Wow that was quick!" Kirk comments. "Just like that the Blue Barracudas are going to the Temple Games.  But who'll join them: the Red Jaguars, the Green Monkeys or the Orange Iguanas? Next question Olmec."

Olmec asks:
"Whose cannonball shattered the nose of the Great Sphinx: Napoleon, Henry the Eighth, or—?"
Heather stomps down first: "Napoleon…?"
"Correct," replies Olmec, and so the Red Jaguars move down a step.

Olmec then asks:
"Napoleon confused the Sphinx for what: A statue in honor of a new French emperor—?"
Christian buzzes in: "Uh… a statue of a new emperor… of France…?"
"Correct," answers Olmec, so the Orange Iguanas get to move down a step as well.

Olmec asks:
"What other monuments were built in ancient Egypt—?"
Nicole stomps down first and she and Billy both shout: "Pyramids!"
"Correct," replies Olmec, and the Green Monkeys high-five each other before moving down.
"It's all tied up on the second step!" explains Kirk.  "This match is heating up.  Next question."

Olmec now asks:
"How tall is the Great Sphinx: 45 feet, 65 feet, or 105 feet?"
Nobody stomps down for a few seconds, but then Billy rings in: "45 feet…?"
"Incorrect," replies Olmec.
Chris buzzes in and takes a wild guess: "65 feet…?"
"That is correct," says Olmec, allowing the Red Jaguars to step down again.
"Red Jaguars are only one step away from the Temple Games," narrates Kirk. "There's still time for the other teams to catch up.  Olmec, continue."

Olmec does so by asking:
"What is the name for an Egyptian king: Czar, Emperor, or—?"
Chris rings in again: "Pharaoh."
"That is correct!" Olmec shouts, and so the Red Jaguars get to meet up with the Blue Barracudas on the bottom step.
"We've got our two teams!" announces Kirk. "And they are the Blue Barracudas and the Red Jaguars! Green Monkeys and Orange Iguanas gave it a great effort too.  They're not going away empty-handed, we've got a great gift for them." Billy, Nicole, Christian and Julie will each be receiving a $50 U.S. Savings Bond provided by AND 1.

"Now, the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest," says Kirk, "so let's get to know our two teams. On the Red Jaguars, we have Chris. It says here you're not just a big football fan, you also play the game a lot."
"Yeah," Chris replies simply.
"What's you're favorite team?" asks Kirk.
"The Dolphins," Chris says shortly. The audience applauds as Kirk goes to interview Chris's partner.
"And Heather, you like dancing but you also collect seashells," Kirk reads on his index card. "How big is your collection?"
"I've got about 300," Heather replies. "I just started only a few months ago."
"Let's hear it for the Red Jaguars!" Kirk shouts. The audience applauds as Kirk goes to interview the other team. "But on the Blue Barracudas, we have Ryan. And you're into skateboarding and you're bent on becoming the top boarder. Tell me about that."
"Uh, I've been boarding since I was seven and I'm hopin' I'll see the headline someday: 'Ryan Tsao, X-Games Champ,' " explains Ryan.
"And Elizabeth, you're into swimming and cheerleading, but you want be a singer," Kirk reads. "Tell me about that."
"Well… yeah, I wanna be a singer," replies Elizabeth, "I'm working on learning to play the guitar too. I've been taking guitar for about a year now, and, um, singing since I was I think six."
"Well you're gonna have to make some music in these Temple Games," says Kirk. "Let's hear it for the Blue Barracudas!" The audience applauds again.

"Why don't you go get ready for the Temple Games," Kirk says, "while I tell you guys what's gonna happen here. Now, in the Temple Games, these teams will be competing to win Pendants of Life. The winning team will need the Pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards when they go to Olmec's Temple. There are three Temple Games, and Olmec… will you tell us about Temple Game #1?"

Olmec begins:
"When a pharaoh died, he would be placed in a pyramid with his closest possessions. Here you must bring some of a pharaoh's treasures to his pyramid. You are now strapped in a rotating lever and, when Kirk gives the signal, run around to grab a treasure off the stone column and place it on your pyramid. (Actually, the pyramids' tops have been removed, to make a square platform on top.) Then, go back and grab another.
"The player with the most treasures on the pyramid in 60 seconds wins, but be careful— if a treasure falls next to the pyramid, it will not count."
The camera fades to Kirk. "I doubt they ever put the treasures in the tombs like this. Let's put 60 seconds on the clock. On your mark, get set, GO!"
Chris and Elizabeth take off at very quickly, but only Elizabeth gets a treasure on her pyramid the first time around. However, she can't reach the stone column to get a second treasure until her third time around. She and Chris both miss a few extra times, but go around eleven times before the ceiling lights flash.
"Time's up! Let's see how you guys did!" Kirk shouts, running over to count the scores. "Red Jaguars got, it looks like seven, but the Blue Barracudas got eight! Blue Barracudas win a half Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds for a moment. "Red Jaguars can catch up in the next game, it's worth a half Pendant. Olmec, tell us about it."

Olmec continues:
"In our legend, Napoleon's men smashed the nose of the Great Sphinx with a cannonball. Here you must smash some statues. When Kirk gives the signal, load your slingshot to knock over the target on your pedestal. If the target is knocked down, you win a point, then the target is set back up again.
"The first player to score five points— or the one with the highest score after 45 seconds— wins."
"Let's put 45 seconds on the clock," says Kirk. "Ready, aim, FIRE!"
Heather and Ryan quickly fire their first cannonballs, but only Ryan is lucky enough to get it on the first try. They both miss on the second, both hit on the third, and both miss on the fourth. Heather and Ryan each get in two more shots before the ceiling lights flash. Kirk runs over to check the spotters' scoreboards.
"Okay, well it looks like Red Jaguars got 1 point," says Kirk, "but the Blue Barracudas scored 3! Blue Barracudas win another half Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds again. "Red Jaguars can still catch up in this game. It's the third and final game, it's worth a full Pendant. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3."

Olmec narrates:
"The Egyptians had to place sand blocks on top of platforms of other sand blocks to build the pyramids. Here you will put the finishing touch on a smaller one.
When Kirk gives the signal, the first player on each team will use the sand block to climb up to the first ledge, then pull it up onto the ledge with them. Then pull your teammate up to join you on the ledge, then continue to reach the next ledge the same way.
"When both players reach the top ledge, place the sand block on the platform. The first team to put their sand block on their platform and complete the pyramid wins."
"This is for the Temple," says Kirk. "We're not gonna put anything on the clock, I'm just gonna wish both teams good luck. On your mark, get set, GO!"
Chris and Ryan climb up first, then grab their sand blocks and pull their partners up. Chris then goes to head up onto the second ledge before Heather, but Elizabeth runs up onto that ledge with him. After she pulls Ryan up, he climbs onto the top ledge first before Chris can. Ryan pulls up Elizabeth very quickly, and they put their sand block on the platform just as Chris is about to help up Heather.
"That's it!" announces Kirk. "The Blue Barracudas got to the top first. They get the full Pendant, that gives them 2, the Red Jaguars didn't have any. The Blue Barracudas are goin' to the Temple!" The audience cheers for a few seconds. "Red Jaguars gave it a great effort too. We've got a great gift for them for playing and here's what it is." Chris and Heather will each be receiving a copy of RV on DVD.

"Olmec!" calls Kirk. "Ryan and Elizabeth have proven themselves worthy and earned the right to enter your Temple. But before they go, can you give them any hints to help them retrieve the Right Nostril of the Great Sphinx?"
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You could start by climbing through the Ledges and climbing down into the Great Chasm. Crawl through the chasm, then race into the Throne Room. Sit on the Throne of the Pretender to spin the wall, and you could choose to go up into the Burial Pit or into the Junction of the Secret Shafts. If you escape, you may have a chance to enter the Chamber of Four Columns. Knock over all the columns to go upstairs or plow through the wall and into the Quicksand Bog.
"Next, climb the Pharaoh's Secret Passage up into the Room of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the right password and shout it out to open the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room of the Ancient Warriors. Place yourself in the correct armor, but be careful— one of the suits of armor could be possessed by the spirit of a Temple Guard! If they grab you, you'll have to give up a Pendant of Life! Next, race up to the King's Storeroom, where you can grab the Right Nostril, then swing on the rope across the Great Chasm. Then, pass through the Vault, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone." Olmec pauses for a second here. "You won 2 Pendants in the Temple Games. Who's going first?"
"I am!" shouts Elizabeth eagerly.
"Very well, Elizabeth," replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "Good luck to both of you."

"All right then," Kirk says, beginning to explain the rules. "When I say 'go,' you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way toward the Nostril. Be careful though— inside the Temple there are many locked doors and dead ends. But there are three ventilation shafts somewhere in the Temple. If you can find one and it's open, you can jump in and slide down to the Junction of the Secret Shafts. Also beware, because in the Temple there are also Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. If you enter one of those rooms, a Temple Guard will jump out and grab you. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple— and it'll be Ryan's turn to enter and try his luck. If you can reach the Nostril, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the gates with the Right Nostril of the Great Sphinx in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded— and here's how!"
• No matter what happens, Ryan and Elizabeth are each guaranteed a $500 prize package from AND 1.
• If they get to the Nostril with time still on the clock, they'll also win matching $1,000 Toys 'R' Us gift cards.
• If they can bring the Right Nostril of the Great Sphinx out of the Temple before three minutes is up, they'll each win four tickets for a seven-day Caribbean cruise!

"Sounds great, so let's see if they can take it all home!" Kirk says, excited. "By the way, Elizabeth, what's your strategy?"
"Well, um, we're just gonna go from the Vault Room to the big Pit thing and see if we can get into the treasure room from there," explains Elizabeth. "And if that doesn't work, we're probably gonna come up from there…" She points at the Burial Pit.
"The sarcophagus room?" asks Kirk.
"Yeah, I hope that'll get us in there to grab the Nostril in time," Elizabeth replies.
"Well let's see if that works," Kirk says. "Get your mouthpieces in. Let's put the gate down, Olmec!"
Olmec lets out a low moan as he lowers the gate.
"And let's set the clock… for three minutes. On your mark, get set, GO!"

Elizabeth runs up into the Vault and swiftly spins the safe wheel. The safe opens up and so does the door into the Ledges, but not the door into the Great Chasm. So Elizabeth has to go down into the Ledges. She finds an open crawl tube rather quickly, but before she can enter the Great Chasm her leg is grabbed by a TEMPLE GUARD!
Elizabeth has a Pendant, and she gives it to the Temple Guard to keep going. She crawls across the Great Chasm and goes right into the Throne Room with 2:28 left. She hits the actuators on the Throne of the Pretender's armrests and stands on the Throne holding onto the rungs of the ladder, preparing to climb up when the Throne completely turns around. Unfortunately, the door up into the Burial Pit is sealed shut.
"That's not gonna take her out of the Throne of the Pretender!" comments Kirk. "Looks like she'll have to go into the Room of the Secret Shafts!" So Elizabeth enters the Junction of the Secret Shafts with 2:13 remaining and then enters the Chamber of Four Columns with a little more than two minutes left. She looks around and shrugs before she realizes what she can do. Elizabeth promptly breaks through the rock wall into the Quicksand Bog, and she then climbs up the ladder from there into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. She grabs the base of the statue, but as she puts it into place out comes the second TEMPLE GUARD!
Elizabeth is taken out of the Temple with 1:46 left, and then Ryan races up into the Vault mere seconds later. He goes down from there and climbs through the Ledges, then escapes into the Great Chasm and passes into the Throne Room from there. The Throne takes a moment to spin around, but he's off before it's gone all the way around and takes off. Ryan races all the way across the bottom floor and pulls himself up onto the slide in the Quicksand Bog without using the ladder. He then runs up the Pharaoh's Secret Passage and enters the Room of the Secret Password with a full minute left.
Ryan opens the nearest cabinet and pulls out the tablet. He shouts out the inscription: "OPEN SESAME!" Kirk has to repeat it since Ryan didn't remove his mouthpiece, and the door opens into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. Ryan reaches for the torso and the head of the statue still on the shelves and places them on the base fairly quickly. The door opens into the Room of the Ancient Warriors with 37 seconds left, and he goes right to the middle suit of armor and pulls down its arms. It's the correct armor, and he runs up into the King's Storeroom and grabs the RIGHT NOSTRIL with 0:26 remaining.
Ryan then tosses the Nostril down the ladder into the Burial Pit and climbs down after it, then crawls into the Great Chasm and then swings across the gap with it in hand. He then passes into the Vault with the Nostril and then runs through the gate with it with 5 seconds left!
"Unbelievable!" shouts Kirk. "They got it all! The trampoline— the Toys 'R' Us gift cards— they're goin' to the Caribbean! This team was great all day. I don't wanna go, but we have to. Join us next time for another great legend of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!"

Episode Summary
Episode 14: The Right Nostril of the Great Sphinx

Name of Artifact: The Right Nostril of the Great Sphinx
Season: 1
Layout: 3
Result: Made it!
Time Remaining: 0:05
Team: Blue Barracudas
Pendants Won: 2
Location of Artifact: The King's Storeroom

The Blue Barracudas were an absolutely dominant team throughout the episode— the only exception was placing second at the Moat, but they swept the Steps and won two Pendants of Life. After that, what could properly cap the episode but a fantastic Temple Run?

Elizabeth moved at an average pace, but she went a long way on the Pendant she had and knew what she was doing for the most part. After starting in on the statue, she got taken out of the Shrine of the Silver Monkey a little less than halfway into the run. Ryan made two mistakes in the Temple— entering the Vault which only led to the Ledges, and ignoring the already-open diagonal passage from the Quicksand Bog in favor of going up into the Room of the Secret Password. But he was unbelievably fast! He ran through seven cleared rooms, completed three room objectives, and still got to the Nostril in the King's Storeroom in less than eighty seconds. He got out of the Temple with only five seconds left, in part because he took a less direct exit and passed through all twelve rooms of the Temple during the run. Season 1 runs don't get much more exciting than this.

Trivia and Records:
Ryan is the first of only two players to enter all twelve rooms of the Temple before time ran out; the feat would not be accomplished again until "The Wooden Dragon Head of the Ormen Lange" in Season 3.  This was also tied with "The Silver Angel Wing of Elizabeth I" for closest victory of Season 1, with only five seconds on the clock.
