Rediscovery EP: The Spear of the Nine Samurai
« on: December 18, 2006, 03:13:50 PM »
Author's Note: This is one of the episodes of my independent project, Legends: The Rediscovery.  More information on the project can be found by following this link.

Episode 9: The Spear of the Nine Samurai

The camera pans through a thick jungle to stop in front of an ancient temple. The giant stone head at the base of the temple breaks the silence:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg!"

Kirk comes down swinging on a rope. "Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple. The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple. Olmec, which legend are we going to hear about today?"

Olmec replies:
"The legend of the Spear of the Nine Samurai."

"Ah, the Spear of the Nine Samurai!" Kirk says in response. "Well, the adventure is set, and one of these six teams will have the chance to enter Olmec's Temple and retrieve the Sphere. Will it be:
"Ben and Tamara of the Red Jaguars—" the camera pans to each team in order—
"Tommy and Marly of the Blue Barracudas,
"Patrick and Rachael of the Green Monkeys,
"Chris and Heather of the Orange Iguanas,
"Tommy and Allison of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Jason and Hiromi of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple. First, they must cross the moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today:
"In front of each team a giant web has fallen above the Moat. One player from each team is already holding onto a long rope, and when I say 'go,' they'll swing out to the web and climb over it, then swim the rest of the Moat. Then their partner will go out to grab the rope, then go across the same way, but be careful— if your knees touch the water before you climb over the web, you'll have to go back and start over.
"When both players are across, run over and hit your team's gong." He slams down on the Red Jaguars' gong to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round, so teams— are you ready?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Olmec-san, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"Indeed, honorable Fogg-san," Olmec replies.
"Then let's get it started!" says Kirk. "On your mark, get set, GO!"

The teams' first players take off at the signal, and soon a few fast ones get across first— the girls on the Blue Barracudas and the Silver Snakes, and the boy on the Green Monkeys. The second players take off immediately— but the boy on the Blue Barracudas falls into the drink as Ben of the Red Jaguars makes it to the other side. The girl on the Purple Parrots gets across shortly after.
The Silver Snakes get their second player across first, as the boy on the Orange Iguanas crosses. Not too long after, the Red Jaguars and Green Monkeys hit their gongs at almost the exact same time. The boy on the Blue Barracudas slips off the net and into the water just as the boy on the Purple Parrots hops over his to get to the other end of the Moat, winning his team the fourth position.
"That's it!" announces Kirk, standing by the Silver Snakes. "We've got our four teams! Silver Snakes, over here in a flash! They'll be going on to the Steps of Knowledge, along with the Purple Parrots—" the camera shows each qualifying team in order— "and the Green Monkeys— and the Red Jaguars! Blue Barracudas and Orange Iguanas gave it a great effort too. You're not going away empty-handed, here's what we've got for you." Tommy, Chris, Marly and Heather will each be receiving a $50 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Nike.

The four teams are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the Sphere of the Nine Samurai.  Pay attention teams, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you one step closer to Olmec's Temple."

Olmec begins to tell the story:
"One of the bravest daimyos in all of Japan was Oda Nobunaga.  He was born into a weaker noble family and kept losing his parents and brothers somewhat mysteriously.  In 1560, the rival warlord family, led by the notorious Imagawa Yoshimoto, gathered an army of 25,000 men and marched toward Kyoto.  The Oda clan was becoming increasingly worried.
" 'There's way too many!' Nobunaga's brother panicked. 'What're we going to do?'
" 'Stand and fight,' Nobunaga replied simply. 'Fetch me the Spear of the Nine Samurai.'
"And so, even though Nobunaga's army of only 3,000 was horribly outnumbered, they stood their ground and turned out victorious.
"Several years later, Nobunaga, armed with the Spear of the Nine Samurai, led an attack on the Honn?ji castle, only to be captured.  He panicked and quickly decided to stab himself with the Spear, dying on the spot!  The blade of the Spear remained embedded in Nobunaga's body, but the handle found its way to the Temple.  Your quest is to find the Spear of the Nine Samurai and bring it back here."

"Thanks Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the story. "So tell us, where is the Spear?"
Olmec replies:
"The Spear of the Nine Samurai can be found in the Room of the Ancient Warriors."

"Teams," Kirk begins, walking down the steps, "you are now standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a minute, Olmec will ask you a question about the legend.  If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're first, your step will light up, and you'll have three seconds to answer.  If you're right, you can move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, one of the other teams will get a chance to answer.  The first two teams to make it to the bottom step will be one step closer to Temple of Olmec.  Okay Olmec, we're now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
"The daimyos were a feudal class in what nation—?"
Patrick rings in: "Japan."
"Correct," replies Olmec, and so the Green Monkeys get to move down one level.
"Next question, Olmec," says Kirk.

Olmec then asks:
"The Spear of the Nine Samurai belonged to what daimyo: Tokugawa Ieyasu, Oda Nobunaga, or Imaga—?"
Tommy buzzes in: "Oda Nobunaga…?"
"Correct," says Olmec, and the Purple Parrots move down to the next step.

Olmec now asks:
"Currently, what is the capital of Japan: Ky?to, T?ky?, or —?"
Hiromi confidently shouts: "T?ky?!"
"Correct," replies Olmec, and so the Silver Snakes move down a step as well.
"It's gonna be a close Steps of Knowledge, I can tell!" yells Kirk. "Next question, Olmec!"

Olmec continues:
"Who was the general of the feudal Japanese army: The daimyo, The shogun, or The—?"
Patrick stomps down first: "Daimyo…?"
"That is incorrect," replies Olmec. "The other two choices are—"
Ben rings in: "The shogun…?"
"Correct," answers Olmec, and the Red Jaguars get to move down one level as well.
"It's a four-way tie on the second step!" Kirk informs the audience. "Olmec, continue!"

Olmec does so by asking:
"Which of these a term for a wandering samurai—?"
Allison stomps down too early: "A daimyo…?"
"That is not one of our three choices," replies Olmec. "The three choices are: ?nin, R?nin, or Ninja."
Hiromi buzzes in first: "R?nin…?"
"That is correct," replies Olmec, and so the Silver Snakes go down one more step.
"Silver Snakes are only one step away from the next round," Kirk explains. "Olmec, next question."

Olmec then asks:
"Which of these is a type of sword often wielded by samurai: Kana, Katana, or Katakana?"
Nobody stomps down for a second, but then Rachael rings in: "Kamakada…?"
"That is not one of our three choices," replies Olmec.  Then Hiromi stomps down: "Katana."
"That is correct!" shouts Olmec, and so the Silver Snakes go down to the bottom step.
"Silver Snakes are going to the Temple Games, but we're still lookin' for one more team," explains Kirk. "Who's it gonna be: the Red Jaguars, the Green Monkeys or the Purple Parrots? Next question, Olmec."

Olmec now asks:
"What did Oda Nobunaga do when he was captured at the Honn?ji palace: He committed suici—?"
Tamara rings in and panics: "Stabbed himself with the Spear…?" Then Ben tries to re-word her answer: "He committed suicide."
"That is correct," says Olmec, and so the Red Jaguars are allowed to step down.
"Red Jaguars are now one step away from the next round," says Kirk. "Let's keep going, Olmec."

Olmec asks:
"What clan did Oda Nobunaga and his outnumbered army defeat: Imagawa—?"
Tommy buzzes in: "Imagawa…?"
"That is correct," answers Olmec, and so the Purple Parrots go down to the second-to-last step as well.
"One more right answer from the Purple Parrots, and they'll be going to the Temple Games," explains Kirk. "Olmec, next question."

Olmec asks:
"About how many people were in Oda Nobunaga's army: 3,000; 5,000; or 10,000?"
Ben stomps down first: "3,000…?"
"That is correct!" shouts Olmec, and so the Red Jaguars join the Silver Snakes at the bottom step.
"That's it! We've got our two teams!" announces Kirk. "And they are the slippery Silver Snakes and the rockin' Red Jaguars! Green Monkeys and Purple Parrots, it was a close match.  You won't be going home empty-handed, here's what we've got for you." Patrick, Rachael, Tommy, and Allison will each be receiving a copy of King Kong on DVD.

"Now," says Kirk, "the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, but before we continue, let's get to know our teams a bit better. On the Red Jaguars, we have Ben. And how old are you?"
"Twelve," Ben replies.
"Now, you're into karate— Bruce Lee, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal," says Kirk. "You practice karate yourself?"
"Yeah, I've been taking karate for about two years now, and I've got a brown belt," explains Ben.
"That's very good," says Kirk. "And his partner here is Tamara. And how old are you?"
"Thirteen," replies Tamara.
"And it says here that your life revolves around music," Kirk reads. "Tell me about that."
"I love listenin' to music— rock or hip-hop— and I'm starting to go into songwriting," Tamara explains. "I'm learning to play the drums in school, too."
"Well you'll have to make some music in these Temple Games," says Kirk. "Let's hear it for the Red Jaguars!" The audience applauds. "But hold on, here we've got the Silver Snakes, and this is Jason. How old are you?"
"Thirteen," Jason replies.
"And you're really into basketball," Kirk reads. "Tell me about that."
"I've been playin' every day after school for years now," Jason says.
"So I'm gonna guess you can sink a three-point shot," assumes Kirk.
"Yeah," replies Jason. "I got a ways to go before I can make it at half-court, but I'm starting to sink it from further away."
"And what do you do when you're not on the court?" asks Kirk.
"Switch on the tube and surf over to Nick GaS," Jason says. The audience claps as Kirk goes to interview Jason's partner. "And you're… Hiromi. And how old are you?"
"Thirteen," replies Hiromi.
"The game's been a breeze for you so far," Kirk comments. "You took total control in the Steps of Knowledge. Any strategy going into this?"
"Leave it all to her," Jason cuts in. "She's Japanese-American, knows a lot about Japan. So when she heard about what the legend is, she jumped up and said, 'Lucky! A history test I actually know the answers too.' " The audience laughs.
"Tell me more about yourself," Kirk says. "You like to play soccer?"
"Yes," Hiromi replies. "I'm usually on offense, but they've made me a goalie before. I think we've got a good shot at winning today, and I'm real excited I'm here! Whoo!"
"Then let's hear it for the Silver Snakes!" The audience applauds and cheers loudly.

"Why don't you go get ready for the Temple Games," Kirk says, "while I tell you guys what's gonna happen here. Now, in the Temple Games, these teams will be competing to win Pendants of Life. The winning team will need the Pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards when they go to Olmec's Temple. There are three Temple Games, and the first one is called Target Practice. Olmec, tell us about it."

Olmec begins:
"Warlords often fought other groups outnumbered. Here, you must take down a mob of warriors that has outnumbered you. When Kirk gives the signal, jump down from your platform and knock down one of the targets with your staff, then jump again and aim for another target. Once all of your targets are knocked over, you must then return to your starting platform.
"The first player to knock over all twelve targets and return to the platform— or the one that's furthest along in 60 seconds— wins."
The camera fades to Kirk. "You had to make it tough for them, Olmec," shouts Kirk. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock. On your mark, get set, GO!"
Ben and Jason jump off their platforms and their bungee cords lower them to ground level. They head to the left and each knock over a target, then start bouncing off in different directions. "You have to keep jumping or knocking one down won't count," Kirk explains to the audience. The boys bounce up to hit targets on raised platforms, then keep going. Both end up having to backtrack at some points, but they make good progress before ceiling lights flash to indicate that time is up.
"Okay, that's it!" Kirk shouts. "It looks like Ben knocked over six, but Jason got down seven! Silver Snakes get a half Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds for a second. "Don't worry Red Jaguars, you can still catch up in the next game, it's worth a half Pendant. Olmec, tell us about it."

Olmec continues:
"Oda Nobunaga had to march his men to the capital at Kyoto to intercept Imagawa Yoshimoto's attack. Here, you will be racing to Kyoto. When Kirk gives the signal, move as fast as you can to start turning the giant disk. When the disk makes one full rotation, it means you have marched one mile toward Kyoto.
"The player who has traveled the most miles toward Kyoto in 60 seconds wins."
"It's basically run for your life here," says Kirk, "so let's put 60 seconds on the clock. Ready, set, GO!"
Tamara and Hiromi start crawling up the right sides of their disks to turn them clockwise. Tamara falls off once very early, and again near the end. Hiromi also tumbles right off close to the end. After a full minute, lights flash from above to end the game.
"All right, time's up, let's see how they did!" Kirk shouts, running over to compare the spotters' scoreboards. "Tamara made it 11 miles to Kyoto, but Hiromi ran 14 miles! Silver Snakes get another half Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds again. "So it's 1-0 Silver, but the third and final game's worth a full Pendant. Olmec, tell us about it."

Olmec narrates:
"Oda Nobunaga and his small army then faced off against Imagawa Yoshimoto and all his men. Here, you will battle against the other team. Two giant boulders rest between your territories, and soon a third will roll into play. When Kirk gives the signal, push the boulders back and forth to knock over the opposing team's city markers while you and your partner defend your own. You cannot cross the line between the two territories.
"The first team to knock over all five of their opponents' city markers— or the team that knocks over the most in 90 seconds— wins."
The camera fades. "Definitely a new way to play 'War,' " says Kirk. "Let's put 90 seconds on the clock. Ready, set, GO!"

The players rush out to get the two boulders rolling, and one rolls off into each territory. Jason manages to block the Red Jaguars' first shot, but Ben accidentally deflects the boulder into one of the targets, recording a point for the Silver Snakes. Nobody scores for a while.
After 30 seconds, the spotters roll a third boulder into the field. After every few seconds, one of the players would go to push this third boulder— but usually with a player from the other team going over to block the shot and keep the boulder in the same place. In the last half-minute, Hiromi slips and fails to block one of the Red Jaguars' shots and Jason accidentally crosses the line to send another boulder right back. The ceiling lights flash not too long after to end the game.
"Okay, let's see how they did!" shouts Kirk, running over to announce the final score. "Jason crossed the line by mistake at the last second, so we had to set one of the Silver Snakes' targets back up, they got nothing— but the Red Jaguars got one. Red Jaguars win the full Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds. "So after three games it's all tied up a Pendant a piece, we go to a tiebreaker. Bring out the tiebreaker pedestals!"

The players run over to the tiebreaker pedestals and stand behind their gongs as directed by Kirk. "Okay teams, here's the tiebreaker rules. In a minute, Olmec is gonna ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, hit the gong in front of you. You'll have three seconds to answer and I must accept your first response. If you're right, you and your partner will be going to the Temple in search of the Spear of the Nine Samurai. But if you're wrong or run out of time, your opponents automatically win. Olmec! What is the final question?"

Olmec asks:
"In feudal times, what was the capital of Japan?"
Hiromi rings in and confidently answers: "Ky?to."
"That… is… correct," Olmec replies, and the audience bursts into applause.
"It was so close, but the Silver Snakes got it! The Silver Snakes are going to the Temple!" Kirk says, summing up the Temple Games in a few words. "The Red Jaguars came so close, but came up a little short. They're not going out empty-handed, we've got a great gift for them." Ben and Tamara will each be receiving a $100 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Nestle. "Jason and Hiromi, great job, but it's not over yet. We're going to see if you can make it through Olmec's Temple."

"Olmec!" calls Kirk. "Jason and Hiromi have proven themselves worthy and've earned the right to enter your Temple. But before we go, can you give them any information about your Temple to help them retrieve the Spear of the Nine Samurai?"
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You could start by running up the stairs to the Vault. Turn the wheel to open a door— that may take you into the Great Chasm. Here you could choose to swing across the gap and climb up into the King's Storeroom. Smash the clay pots to find the key; that may lead you into the Chamber of the Sacred Markers. Match the symbols on the right to those on the left and pass into the Room of the Ancient Warriors, where you can grab the Spear of the Nine Samurai. Place yourself in the correct armor to open the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue there and you may be headed toward the Room of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the correct inscription, and shout it out to open the door to the Pharaoh's Secret Passage.
"Slide down the tunnel to the Quicksand Bog, where you could smash through into the Dungeon of the Lone Column. Reach into the column to find the key, or knock it over and you'll enter the Junction of the Secret Shafts. Race across the room and you'll gain entry to the Tomb of the Headless Kings. Attach the skull on the altar to its proper king to release the doors. Then, pass through the Great Chasm, climb through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone." Olmec pauses for a second here. "You won 1 Pendant in the Temple Games. Who's going first?"
"I am," says Jason.
"Very well, Jason," replies Olmec as Kirk gives him Pendant of Life. "Good luck to both of you."

"All right then," Kirk says, beginning to explain the rules. "When I say 'go,' you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way toward the Spear. Be careful though— inside the Temple are many locked doors and dead ends. But to make up for this, there are three old shafts somewhere in the Temple. If you can find one and it's open, you can jump in and slide down to the Junction of the Secret Shafts. Also beware, because there are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. If you enter one of those rooms, the Temple Guard will jump out and grab you. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple— and it'll be Hiromi's turn to enter and try her luck. Now, Hiromi, hidden somewhere inside the Temple are the two halves of your Pendant. If you can pick up both of them, you will get an extra life. As soon as you can reach the Spear, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the gates with the Spear of the Nine Samurai in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded— and here's how!"
• No matter what happens, Jason and Hiromi will each receive a $500 prize package from AND 1.
• If they get to the Spear within the time limit, they'll also win matching $1,000 Toys 'R' Us gift cards.
• If they can bring the Spear of the Nine Samurai out of the Temple before three minutes is up, they'll each win a five-day vacation in Japan!

"Wow, Japan!" Kirk says, excited. "I'd love to see you guys win all these prizes, nobody's won yet today. By the way, Hiromi, maybe you can tell us what your strategy is?"
"Well, what we're gonna do is try to stay on the top floor and go right through there if all the doors unlock," Hiromi explains. "And if he gets taken out, I'm just gonna follow his path and look for my Pendant— Jason'll wave to me if he finds anything."

"Well let's see if you can take it all home," Kirk says. "Let's bring the gate down, Olmec!"
As the Temple Gate drops, Jason and Hiromi put in their mouthpieces.
"You've got three minutes to get to the Spear, so let's set the clock for three minutes. Ready, GO!"

Jason runs up the stairs to the Vault, and quickly spins the safe wheel. The door to the Great Chasm slams open, and the safe opens, too, and Kirk shouts: "TEMPLE GUARD! Right off the bat! Give him your Pendant, and you can go on!" Jason does so, and he heads into the Great Chasm and swings across the gap to try opening the doors. "He tries the King's Storeroom, that doesn't open, he tries the Room of the Secret Markers, that doesn't open. He'll have to go down— down into the Temple of the Ancient Kings!" And Jason jumps off the ledge, noticing a half Pendant in the actuator. He signals to Hiromi before going on into the Tomb of the Headless Kings with 2:39 left.
Jason sees the second half Pendant on one of the rungs of the ladder up into the Chamber of the Sacred Markers, and he waves as he grabs the skull off the altar. He happens to pick the right skull on the first try, then climbs up the ladder, waving again. (2:27) Jason starts looking for the missing tiles, but before he can make any progress, out jumps the second TEMPLE GUARD!
Jason's now out of Pendants, so he's taken out of the Temple and Hiromi will have to go in. She has 2:17 left— a great amount of time to find another path to the Spear. She rushes through the Vault, jumps down into the Great Chasm and pulls one half Pendant off the actuator for the door into the Tomb of the Headless Kings. Speaking of the Tomb, she picks up the other half Pendant on the ladder up after almost entering the Junction of the Secret Shafts without it. Good thing she realized it was there, for in the Junction of the Secret Shafts hides the third TEMPLE GUARD!
Hiromi lets out a scream, tosses her Pendant halves to the Temple Guard, and keeps going. She rushes into the Dungeon of the Lone Column, and then bashes right through the wall with 1:45 left. She heads up the ladder to get to the door which would go into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey— and it opens, so she crawls right in.
"She's only one room away from the Spear!" shouts Kirk. "She's just gotta put together the monkeys and she's into the Tomb of the Ancient Warrior."
"Go, Hiromi, Go!" Jason encourages his partner as she grabs the middle piece and head of the statue and puts them on the base one at a time. The door opens into the Room of the Ancient Warriors, and Hiromi grabs the Spear with a massive 1:17 still on the clock. She then races up through the King's Storeroom and into the Great Chasm. She can't seem to grab the rope with the Spear in her hand, however, and so she jumps down, tries going up a crawl tube into the Ledges ("She's gonna go the hard way!" comments Kirk) and then goes up into the Vault after struggling a bit the tall Spear. Hiromi then races down the stairs from the Vault and jumps back through the gate with an impressive 51 seconds left!
"Unbelievable!" shouts Kirk. "They won it all— the AND 1 gift packages— all that cash— they're goin' to Japan! Jason did a great job, Hiromi did a great job. We all did a great job! Join us next time for another great legend of the Hidden Temple!"

Episode Summary
Episode 9: The Spear of the Nine Samurai

Name of Artifact: The Spear of the Nine Samurai
Season: 1
Layout: 2
Result: Made it!
Time Remaining: 0:51
Team: Silver Snakes
Pendants Won: 1
Location of Artifact: The Room of the Ancient Warriors

This is one of my favorite Season 1 episodes.  The Silver Snakes were a strong team all day— first in the Moat, first on the Steps of Knowledge, and each player won their individual Temple Game.  They would've tied in the team game and gone to the Temple with two Pendants, but Jason accidentally crossed the foul line in the middle of the playing field, penalizing his team and causing a tie with the Red Jaguars after three games.  Nevertheless, the Snakes won the tiebreaker and went off into the Temple, but with just one Pendant.

However, because The Rediscovery made it possible for a team with only one Pendant of Life to assemble a second Pendant during the Temple Run, Jason's mistake didn't end up hurting the team.  He went first into the Temple and made a nice path toward the artifact, but went up into the center room and was taken out roughly forty seconds into the run.

Hiromi launched in and moved at a good speed, and she was smart to avoid the Chamber of the Sacred Markers altogether.  She found BOTH halves of her Pendant— on the actuator for the door into the Tomb of the Headless Kings and on the ladder in the Tomb— and she would soon need them in the Junction of the Secret Shafts.  Three simple rooms on the bottom floor saved plenty of time.  Hiromi then put the monkey together and grabbed the Spear with a remarkable 1:17 remaining.  At that point, victory was certain, and sure enough, she made it back through the gate twenty-six seconds later.  Kirk was excited, Jason was excited, and Hiromi herself was ecstatic.  Temple Runs don't get much better than this.

Trivia and Records:
Achieved in only 2:09, this run is the fastest victory in Season 1.  Hiromi is also the only follow-up runner on a one-Pendant-winning team to find both halves of her Pendant in the Temple.
