Redicovery EP: The Lost Papyrus Scroll of the Poet Sage
« on: December 17, 2006, 07:42:27 AM »
Author's Note: This is one of the episodes of my independent project, Legends: The Rediscovery.  More information on the project can be found by following this link.

Episode 2: The Lost Papyrus Scroll of the Poet Sage

The camera pans through a thick jungle to stop in front of an ancient temple.  The giant stone head at the base of the temple breaks the silence:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg!"

Kirk comes down swinging on a rope. "Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple.  The rooms are full of hidden treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple.  Olmec, which legend are we going to hear about today?"

Olmec replies:
"The Legend of the Lost Papyrus Scroll of the Poet Sage."

"So the legend is set," Kirk says in response, "and one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the Lost Scroll.  Will it be:
"The Red Jaguars—" the camera pans to the cheering teams one at a time— "the Blue Barracudas— the Green Monkeys— the Orange Iguanas— the Purple Parrots— or the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  First, they must cross the moat, and here's how they'll do it today:
"In front of each team a series of four stone platforms hang above the Moat.  One player from each team will step onto the first platform when I say 'go,' then pull the next platform toward them and make their way to the other side of the Moat.  If a player falls into the water, they will have to go back and start over! Once the first player is across, their teammate must follow the same way.
"When both players are across, run over and hit your team's gong.  The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round, so teams— are you ready?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"OH YEAH!" Olmec replies.
"Okay teams," Kirk says. "On your mark, get set, GO!"

The first players take off at more or less the same pace, but after a few seconds the Blue Barracuda and Green Monkey are a couple steps ahead.  The Orange Iguanas and Purple Parrots are next to get one player across, followed by the Red Jaguars.
"Silver Snakes falling behind!" Kirk shouts, giving the play-by-play. "Blue Barracudas got their second player across! Green Monkeys hit their gong too! Still looking for two more teams— and here come the Orange Iguanas!"
The last three teams are all very close, but the Purple Parrots hit the gong just before the other teams can cross.
"That's it!" shouts Kirk. "Going on to the next round are the Green Monkeys— and the Blue Barracudas— and the Orange Iguanas— and the Purple Parrots! Too bad for the Red Jaguars and the Silver Snakes, though.  They're not going away empty-handed, here's what we've got for them." The players on the Red Jaguars and Silver Snakes will each be receiving a copy of RV on DVD.

The four teams are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the Lost Papyrus Scroll of the Poet Sage.  Pay attention teams, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you one step closer to Olmec's Temple."

Olmec begins to tell the story:
"One of the famous poets of ancient China was Du Fu, the Poet Sage.  Many of his works were based on Chinese philosophies.  He lived under Emperor Tang, and some believe he was a member of an ancient ruling family.
"In his forties, Du Fu got a little political post— but disaster struck only a few months later.  The An Lushan Rebellion started up, and over eight years it replaced emperors, did away with millions of innocent people, and left China in a state of chaos.
" 'This is insane!' Du Fu shouted. 'If I stay, I'm probably next to go! I gotta get out of here!'
"And so Du Fu took his poems and left the area, the thoughts of the rebellion still hanging over his head.
"Du Fu kept most of his poems, but one disappeared— until now.  Your task is to retrieve the Lost Papyrus Scroll and bring it back here."

"Thanks Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the story. "So tell us, where is the Scroll?"
Olmec replies:
"The Lost Papyrus Scroll of the Poet Sage can be found in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey."

"Teams," Kirk begins, walking down the steps, "you are now standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a minute, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're first, your step will light up, and you'll have three seconds to answer.  If you're right, you can move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, one of the other teams will get a chance to answer.  The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Okay Olmec, we're now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
"In what country did the Poet Sage live: Russia—?"
The boy on the Orange Iguanas stomps down first: "China."
"Correct," Olmec replies, and so the Orange Iguanas get to move down one step.
"Next question, Olmec," says Kirk.

Olmec continues:
"What was the Poet Sage's real name: Li Bai, Du Fu, or —?"
The girl on the Orange Iguanas rings in early this time: "Du Fu…?"
"That is correct," Olmec replies, and the Orange Iguanas step down again.
"One more correct response, Orange Iguanas, and you're going to the Temple Games," Kirk explains. "Next question."

Olmec now asks:
"About how many people were killed in the An Lushan Rebellion: 30; 30,000; or—?"
The girl on the Purple Parrots rings in first, but blanks and says nothing.  A bell sounds a few seconds later.  Olmec next says:
"Time's up! The three choices are: 30; 30,000; or 30 million."
The girl on the Blue Barracudas buzzes in this time: "30,000…?"
"Incorrect," Olmec replies. "The correct answer was 30 million."  He promptly asks the next question:

"What was the name of a material used as paper in ancient times: Palmetto, Papyrus, or—?"
The boy on the Blue Barracudas team stomps down first and quickly answers: "Papyrus."
"Correct," replies Olmec.
"Move on down, Blue Barracudas," Kirk says. "You're on the board! Next question, Olmec."

Olmec asks:
"Du Fu lived during what dynasty: The Tang dynasty, the Qin dynasty, or the Sui dynasty?"
The boy on the Orange Iguanas stomps down and guesses: "The Tang dynasty…?"
"That is correct!" Olmec shouts, allowing the Orange Iguanas to step down to the bottom level.
"The Orange Iguanas are going to the Temple Games!" Kirk announces. "We're still looking for one more team, though.  Olmec, next question."

Olmec continues:
"How long did the An Lushan Rebellion last: Four years, Eight years, or Twenty years?"
No one stomps down for a second, but then the boy on the Green Monkeys rings in: "Twenty years…?"
"Incorrect," Olmec replies, and just a second later the girl on the Blue Barracudas buzzes in:
"Eight years."
"That is correct," Olmec answers, and the Blue Barracudas move down another step.
"Blue Barracudas only need one more to go to the next round," Kirk informs the audience. "Next question."

Olmec asks:
"Which of these countries does NOT border China: India, Mongolia, or Israel?"
The girl on the Purple Parrots rings in: "Israel."
"Correct," replies Olmec, allowing the Purple Parrots to move down one step.  He then asks:
"What is the modern capital of China: Beijing, Shanghai, or Shendong?"
The boy on the Green Monkeys answers this time: "Beijing."
"Correct," Olmec says in response, and the Green Monkeys move down one step.  Next, he asks:

"Originally belonging to the British, what island territory was returned to China in 1997: Hong Kong, Macao, or Manchuria?"
The boy on the Blue Barracudas rings in as Olmec says the last choice.
"Hong Kong!" he shouts confidently.
"That is correct!" Olmec shouts in response, and the Blue Barracudas join the Orange Iguanas at the bottom step.
"We've got our two teams!" Kirk announces, running over to join the players. "The Blue Barracudas and the Orange Iguanas! They're both going on to the Temple Games! The Green Monkeys and the Purple Parrots aren't going away empty-handed.  We've got some nice gifts for them." The players on the Green Monkeys and Purple Parrots will each be receiving a $50 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Nike.

"Now," says Kirk, "the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, so let's get to know our teams a little better. On the Blue Barracudas, we have Tori. How old are you, Tori?"
"Twelve," Tori replies.
"It says here you're learning tae kwon do," Kirk says, reading an index card. "What color belt do you have?"
"A blue belt," Tori answers. "I've been taking tae kwon do for about two years now."
"All right, very nice," Kirk comments as the audience applauds.  He then goes to interview Tori's partner. "And her partner here is Jon.  How old are you?"
"Thirteen," Jon replies.
"And it says here you live really close to the studio and have 14 pets," Kirk reads. "What are they?"
"They're all koi fish," Jon replies. "I've always had fish as pets 'cause they're easy to take care of."
"Let's hear it for the Blue Barracudas!" Kirk shouts, and as the audience applauds he goes to interview the other team.
"And on the Orange Iguanas, we have Robbie," says Kirk. "How old are you?"
"Thirteen," replies Robbie.
"It says that history is your best subject and your favorite sport is basketball," Kirk reads. "Tell me about that."
"I play with my friends every day after school," Robbie answers.
"You ever sink a three-point shot?" Kirk asks.
"Once," Robbie replies. "Still need some work, though." The audience claps again, and Kirk goes to interview Robbie's teammate.
"And this is Sarah, who comes all the way from Angel Fire, New Mexico," Kirk says. "Now Sarah, I understand you wanna be a veterinarian. Why?"
"I… just like it," Sarah answers, "I don't know why."
"I almost forgot," Kirk says, "how old are you?"
"As of today, I'm thirteen years old," says Sarah. "It so happens the show's taped on my birthday."
"Well happy birthday!" Kirk shouts. "Let's hear it for the Orange Iguanas!"

"Why don't you girls go get ready for the second Temple Game, and you guys go get ready for the first," Kirk says. "Now, in the Temple Games, these two teams will be competing for Pendants of Life. The winning team will need their Pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards when they go to Olmec's Temple. There are three Temple Games, and Olmec will tell us about the first one."

Olmec begins:
"A poet's compiled works were often made into a book. Here, you must construct a six-page book of poems in order. When Kirk gives the signal, crawl under the altar and find a hole containing a page of your book. If it is Page 1, return with it and place it on your board. If it is not Page 1, go to the next hole and switch the pages. Once you get the correct page, you can go look for the next one.
"The first player to retrieve all six pages— or the player that's further along after 60 seconds— wins."
The camera segues to Kirk. "Let's put 60 seconds and the clock and get going. On your mark, get set, GO!"
Jon and Robbie disappear under the altar and poke up through the first hole they each find. Robbie comes up to find Page 1, whereas Jon meets Page 5. He goes into the next hole and trades for Page 4, while Robbie sticks Page 1 to his board and dives back under the altar.
Jon next exchanges Page 4 for Page 2 and then for Page 1, going back to place it on his board. Robbie moves into the hole where Jon just was and steals away Page 2 for his board. Robbie also finds the third page in the first hole he tries after going back under the altar, then places it on the board too. The lights flash above just as Robbie dives back under again and Jon switches Page 6 and Page 4.
"Time's up! Come on out here!" Kirk shouts, preparing to count the pages. "Jon only got Page 1, but Robbie found up to Page 3. That means the Orange Iguanas get the half Pendant of life!" The audience applauds for a second. "Blue Barracudas can still catch up, because this next game is also worth a half Pendant. Olmec, tell us about it."

Olmec continues:
"Before pens were invented, birds' feathers were used for writing. Here, you will need to find the feathers. Before each of you is a giant net with seven containers around the edges. When Kirk gives the signal, climb the net and break open a container. If there is a feather inside, grab it, jump down and place it in your basket. However, two of the containers are empty, so think carefully.
"The player with the most feathers in her basket after 60 seconds— or the first player to find all five feathers— wins."
"Let's put one minute on the clock," says Kirk. "Ready, set, GO!"
Tori and Sarah fling themselves onto the webs and immediately start climbing. They both go for the top-center container first, and both find the first feather and jump back down. At this point they go off in different directions. Tori starts on the rightmost cabinet and makes her way around, whereas Sarah just goes outward from the middle container. When the lights flash to indicate that time is up, Tori has only one cabinet unopened and Sarah has missed two.
Kirk runs over to count how many each team has. "Tori got 4 feathers— but so did Sarah! They each get the half Pendant of Life!" The audience claps again. "So it's 1 to ½, with the Orange Iguanas in the lead. The third and final game is worth a full Pendant. Olmec, tell us about it."

Olmec narrates:
"During the An Lushan Rebellion, Chinese emperors were quickly replaced. Here, you must take out these rulers in succession. When Kirk gives the signal, load your slingshot to knock over the target on your pedestal, then your partner will take aim. If the target is knocked down, your team wins a point, then the target is set back up again.
"The first team to score ten points— or the team with the highest score after 90 seconds— wins."
"This is for the Temple!" Kirk shouts. "Let's put 90 seconds on the clock. Ready, aim, FIRE!"
The boys load first and shoot for their targets. Jon hits his target easily, but Robbie's cannonball is thrown into the Ledges. Then Tori scores whereas Sarah's cannonball falls right out of the slingshot. Nobody scores on the third shot. The game more or less continues the same way until the lights flash to indicate that time is up.
"So let's see," Kirk says, running over to the spotters holding the scoresheets. "Blue Barracudas got 5, but the Orange Iguanas didn't score. That gives the Blue Barracudas the full Pendant, giving them a Pendant and a half to take to the Temple! Orange Iguanas, you gave it a great effort too. You won't be leaving empty handed, here's what we've got for you." Robbie and Sarah will each be receiving a small sports package provided by Regent.
"Nice work, Blue Barracudas," Kirk congratulates, "but we're not done yet. Now we're going to see if you can make it through Olmec's Temple."

"Olmec!" calls Kirk. "Jon and Tori have proven themselves worthy and earned the right to enter your Temple. But before they go, can you give them some information to help them retrieve the Lost Papyrus Scroll of the Poet Sage?"
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You could start by running up the stairs to the Crypt. Grab the book from the skeletons and pass into the Great Chasm. You could swing across the gap and climb into the King's Storeroom. Smash the clay pots to find the key which will lead you into the Chamber of the Sacred Markers. Match the symbols on the right to the runes on the left and pass into the Room of the Ancient Warriors. Place yourself in the correct armor to open the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey, where you can grab the Lost Papyrus Scroll of the Poet Sage. Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the correct inscription, and shout it out to open the door to the Pharaoh's Secret Passage.
"Slide down the tunnel to the Quicksand Bog, where you could smash through to the Dark Forest. Find the key in the tree, and you can pass into the Junction of the Secret Shafts. Race across the room and you'll gain entry to the Tomb of the Headless Kings. Attach the skull on the altar to the correct skeleton to release the doors. Then, pass through the Great Chasm, climb through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone." Olmec pauses for a second here. "You won 1 ½ Pendants in the Temple Games. Who's going first?"
"I am!" shouts Jon eagerly.
"Very well, Jon," replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "Good luck to both of you."
"All right then," Kirk says, beginning to explain the rules. "When I say 'go,' you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way toward the Lost Scroll. Be careful though— the temple contains many locked doors and dead ends. But there are three old shafts somewhere in the Temple. If you can find one and it's open, you can jump in and slide down to the Junction of the Secret Shafts. Also beware, because there are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. If you enter one of those rooms, the Temple Guard will jump out and grab you. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple— and it'll be Tori's turn to enter and try her luck. Now, you have a Pendant and a half, but hidden somewhere inside the Temple is the other half of your Pendant. If you can find it and you're carrying the other half, you will get an extra life. If you can reach the Lost Papyrus Scroll, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the gates with the Lost Papyrus Scroll of the Poet Sage in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded— and here's how!"
• Just for making it to the Temple, Jon and Tori will each receive an XBOX 360, along with two new games.
• Reaching the Lost Papyrus Scroll in time will also earn the Blue Barracudas matching $1,000 Toys 'R' Us gift cards.
• If they can get the Papyrus Scroll out of the Temple before their three minutes run out, they'll win the grand prize— matching four-day vacations for four to Beijing!

"Sounds great, so let's see if they can take it all home!" Kirk says, excited. "What's your strategy, anyway?"
"Stay up high," replies Jon. "We're just gonna go through the upper floor as fast as we can."
"And where do you think the Temple Guards are?" asks Kirk.
"I bet we're gonna run into at least one, but hey— no guts, no glory, right?" says Jon.
"Let's see if that works," replies Kirk. "Lower the gate, Olmec, while Jon and Tori get into position."
While the Temple Gate drops, Jon and Tori put in their mouthpieces.
"Let's put three minutes on the clock. Ready, GO!"

Jon races up the stairs to the Crypt where he immediately runs into a TEMPLE GUARD! He trades in his Pendant, then pulls on the skeletons. The door opens on the second try, then he goes into the Great Chasm and swings across the gap. Then he passes into the Chamber of the Sacred Markers with 2:34 left and goes straight to the walls to find the missing tiles, though he has a little trouble finding the last one. When all the tiles are in place, the doors open (except for the one into the Room of the Ancient Warriors), and here comes the second TEMPLE GUARD!
Tori races up to the Crypt with only a half Pendant and 1:48 left on the clock. She realizes she has go through the lower floor to get to the Scroll and so jumps down into the Great Chasm, passing into the Tomb of the Headless Kings. She grabs the skull on the altar right away, but doesn't find the right skeleton until the second try. The door into the Junction of the Secret Shafts opens, and she passes right into the Dark Forest. (1:20) She has trouble finding the key in the trees, and when Jon says that she's running low on time, she smashes through the wall into the Quicksand Bog with 0:58 left— only to meet the third TEMPLE GUARD!
"Augh, that's it!" Kirk remarks as Tori is pulled under by the Temple Guard, an upset Jon looking on. "They had no more Pendants, so that's it… But they still get the XBOXes just for playing, and we gotta get outta here.  Join us again for another Legend of the Hidden Temple!"

Episode Summary
Episode 2: The Lost Papyrus Scroll of the Poet Sage

Name of Artifact: The Lost Papyrus Scroll of the Poet Sage
Season: 1
Layout: 1
Result: Triple seizure
Time Remaining: 0:58
Team: Blue Barracudas
Pendants Won: 1 ½
Location of Artifact: The Shrine of the Silver Monkey

Right after one of the closest wins in the first season of The Rediscovery, we get the quickest loss of the season.  Jon was a little slow, but he had a good concept of what to do in each room (and since this was a show that just got revived after eleven years, I'm willing to overlook their direct-path strategy).  After completing the pattern in the Chamber of the Sacred Markers, he was grabbed by a second Temple Guard with 1:58 remaining.

Tori wasn't too quick either, and since she seemed to think the Temple Guard that caught Jon came out through a Temple Guard door, she didn't bother trying to climb up into the Chamber of the Sacred Markers or the King's Storeroom.  It seemed to work for her, however, as she covered more ground on the bottom floor.  She got a little lost in the Dark Forest, but at least she didn't have to worry about Temple Guards there— the trees didn't have arms as in the original show.  When she heard there was only a minute left, she passed through the rock wall, only to meet the third Temple Guard in the Quicksand Bog with only a half Pendant.  But the question is: where WAS the other half Pendant? Wherever it was, if Tori had found it, this probably would have been a victory.

Trivia and Records:
This was the first aired loss in The Rediscovery, and the quickest triple seizure in the first season.
