Legends of the Hidden Temple
Lost Season 4, Episode 29
The Tangled Thread of Theseus

The camera traverses its way through several plants to simulate a thick rainforest. It eventually makes its way to a large stone head. Its eyes light up and it begins to speak.

OLMECpx]
The Moat:[/b]
OLMEC:
To avoid being separated during your excavation, both team members have been tied together. Unfortunately, the rope has become ensnared on a collapsed beam overhead. To cross the moat, you?ll have to free yourselves. When Kirk gives the signal, both players must jump into the moat and attempt to free the rope by maneuvering it across the curving beam to the other side. Once the rope falls from the beam into the moat, both players may climb out of the water. When both teammates have both feet on the ground, run over and hit the gong. (Kirk hits gong for clarification) The first four teams to hit their gong will go on to the next round.

KIRK:
Let?s get into position. Teams are you ready? (wait for response) Olmec, are you ready?

OLMEC:
Indubitably

KIRK:
All right, then. Teams, on your marks. Get set. GO!

The Legend:
KIRK:
As your quest continues, it?s now time for Olmec to tell us about the Tangled Thread of Theseus. But teams, please pay attention. It will be your knowledge of the legend that will bring you a step closer to Olmec?s Temple.

OLMEC:
One of the noblest leaders in history was King Theseus of Athens. The son of Poseidon, the god of the sea, Theseus led his people in war against King Minos, the leader of Crete.

THESEUS:
I?ve got some bad news, soldiers. King Minos said that until we forfeit, his armies will kidnap citizens and toss them into a labyrinth as a sacrifice. I know it doesn?t sound like much of a punishment, but a large, hungry minotaur will prove otherwise.

OLMEC:
The minotaur was a half-man, half-bull creature that lived in the labyrinth. He knew the passages better than anyone imprisoned inside, and because of this could be neither outrun nor outsmarted. The labyrinth was located underground, beneath King Minos? palace.

THESEUS:
This war will not be won overnight, and we?re definitely not going to surrender to those cretins. They?re Cretans! But I?m not going to let innocent people be killed. I will slay the minotaur myself, and I will return to lead Athens once again.

SOLDIER:
But Theseus, everyone who enters the labyrinth is eaten by the minotaur! How will you kill the minotaur before he kills you?

THESEUS:
Fear not, for I have a plan?

SOLDIER:
?Care to tell us?

THESEUS:
No! It?s a secret. I?ll tell you when I get back. Look for my ship, I?ll fly a white sail. It means I won.

OLMEC:
Theseus? plan relied on King Minos? daughter, Ariadne. She and Theseus had been romantically enamored months before, and she knew the secret to escaping the minotaur. She gave Theseus a ball of thread, and told him that if he unraveled it while traversing the corridors, he could learn the layout of the labyrinth by seeing where he had been before. By learning the labyrinth?s paths, Theseus outsmarted the minotaur and slew him with a sword. He then freed the remaining prisoners. The thread that saved Theseus? life was strewn across the labyrinth, and retrieval of it was not possible without knotting it up. A portion of this thread has found its way to the temple. Your quest is to find it and bring it back here.

KIRK:
Thank you, Olmec. Where is the tangled thread?

OLMEC:
The Tangled Thread of Theseus can be found in The King?s Storeroom.

The Steps of Knowledge:
KIRK:
Teams, you are now standing atop the Steps of Knowledge. In a minute, Olmec will ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you. If you?re first, your step will light up and you can answer the question. If you?re right, you?ll move down to the next step. If you?re wrong or run out of time, I?m going to give the other teams a chance to answer. The first two teams to make it to the bottom level (Kirk descends steps for emphasis) will be one step closer to Olmec?s Temple. Without further ado, let?s get started. Temple Games:

KIRK:
Welcome back to Legends. We have two teams here who have bested the rest, but now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest. Before we go onto the temple games, let?s meet the contestants. (Reads individual player profiles). OK, I?m going to explain what?s going on here, you go get ready for the Temple Games. In the temple games, each team is competing to win Pendants of Life. They?ll need these pendants to protect them from the dreaded temple guards when they make their way through the temple. There are three temple games. Olmec, tell us about game number one.

TEMPLE GAME 1:

OLMEC:
The minotaur was a fierce creature who would eat prisoners trapped in his labyrinth. He had the head of a bull, and the body of a man. In this temple game, you?ll have to survive staring down the minotaur. When Kirk gives the signal, you?ll have to climb up the torso of the minotaur, but be careful because he?ll be snorting at you the whole way. If your feet or arms touch the ground, go back and start again. The first person to climb the torso and spin the head of the minotaur in the other direction wins.

KIRK:
Be careful players, I think I smell the minotaur?s barbecue. Let?s put sixty seconds on the clock. On your marks. Get set. Go.

TEMPLE GAME 2:

KIRK:
The next game is also worth a half pendant of life, and the other team can catch up there. Olmec, can you tell us about it?

OLMEC:
Theseus was able to navigate the labyrinth using a ball of thread to show him which pathways he had already traversed. In this game, you?ll also be navigating a labyrinth. When Kirk gives the signal, climb through vertical maze and make your way to the exit at the bottom. When you reach it, pull the thread tied to you to pull the prisoner through the same path. The first player to pull their prisoner through the exit, or whoever has made the most progress at the end of sixty seconds wins.

KIRK:
This is some pretty strong thread, huh? OK. Get into positions. Put sixty seconds on the clock. Get Ready. Get set. Go!

TEMPLE GAME 3:

KIRK:
The third and final game is worth a whole Pendant of Life, and it?ll take the cooperation of both players. Olmec, tell us about it.

OLMEC:
Inside the labyrinth, prisoners were routinely eaten by the minotaur because they didn?t know where they were going. In this temple game, one member from each team will traverse a labyrinth without knowing where they are going. This teammate will be blindfolded and will be walking on a complicated series of gangplanks above our tank. Their teammate will be at the finish line shouting which path to take and when to turn. The first player to make it across the finish line, or whoever goes longer without falling off the gangplank into the water wins.

KIRK:
I assure you players, no one will be eaten if they fall in. But let?s not try to test this. Put sixty seconds on the clock. On your marks. Get set. Go!

The Temple Run:

KIRK:
Welcome back. The ______ are tough, and have proven themselves worthy. They have earned the right to enter Olmec?s temple, but before they go, Olmec is going to give some information that will help them retrieve The Tangled Thread of Theseus.

OLMEC:
You could start by sliding down into The Ledges, and climbing into The Rock Quarry. Place five stones in the bucket to lift the slab and venture into The Throne Room. Sit on the throne of the pretender to spin the wall and you could choose to go into The Swamp. Maneuver yourself through the murkiness to gain access to The Dark Forest. Reach into the holes to find the key to go up, but beware the Temple Spirits that may inhabit the trees. If you decide to plow through the wall into The Dungeon, you can attempt to shimmy up the Pharaoh?s Secret Passage. At the top, you?ll enter The Shawnee Lodge. Place the sticks into the holes in the center of the room to create the tepee, and you?ll open the door to The Shrine of The Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue, and you may be headed for The Room of the Ancient Warriors. Place yourself into the suits of armor and pull the levers, and you may be headed into the Room of The Mandarin Hand. Place the fingers onto the orb and gain entry into The King?s Storeroom. Smash the clay pots to find the key. Then race across The Troubled Bridge, pass through The Crypt, race down the stairs, and back through The Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone.

You won one pendant in the temple games. Who?s going first? (wait for response) Very well _______, when Kirk gives the signal, you?ll race through the gate into the temple and make your way towards the tangled thread. Hidden inside the temple are temple guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you?re caught without a pendant, you?ll be taken out of the temple and it will be _______?s turn to enter and try his/her luck. If you reach the artifact, all the doors in the temple will instantly unlock, and the temple guards will vanish. Return through the gates with the thread within three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded. And here?s how: (reads prizes).

KIRK:
Let?s hope you can traverse this labyrinth as well as Theseus did his. Mouthpieces in. Olmec, can you please lower your gate? (Wait for gate to lower). Put three minutes on the clock. On your mark. Get set. Go!

Apologies: I write these out in Microsoft Word before uploading them. Apparantly, I forgot to stick in the last part of this one.

Fan Summarypx]

Name of Artifact:   The Tangled Thread of Theseus
Season:   4
Layout:   8
Result:   Ran Out of Time
Time Remaining:   N/A
Team:   Red Jaguars
Pendants Won:  1
Location of Artifact:   The King?s Storeroom
Temple Diagram:

Temple Run Summary:
I think I can imagine the pre-episode conversation when they introduced the Red Jaguar teammates: ?Dorothy, this is Mikey. He is your partner. He is a complete bonehead, and through sheer feats of ineptitude, he will ruin any hope you have of winning today.? Except they probably used smaller words for the kids. Let?s do the list, shall we? Dorothy struggles to get the rope harness across the moat while Mikey sits on the opposite side waiting for her, and just barely avoided being eliminated by the Blue Barracudas. On the Steps of Knowledge, he pays so little attention to what?s going on that he has to be alerted to move down each step. In the temple games, Dorothy called in every favor she had with lady luck to prevent from being eliminated. Mikey does one thing right and makes it to the minotaur?s head in temple game one. Dorothy excels in her own game. In temple game number three, she falls in the water almost instantly because Mikey tells her ?go left? instead of ?go straight.? At the tie-breaker, Mikey hits the buzzer without even hearing the entire question and freezes. Luckily, Dorothy comes up with the answer ?white? almost out of nowhere to win.

In the temple, Dorothy begins by going through the Ledges and the Rock Quarry quickly. She spins the throne, and meets her first temple guard in The Swamp. She sprints through the dark forest trying to avoid being caught by a spirit, and goes up the Dungeon/Shrine ladder, assembles the monkey, and manages to opens the door to the Storeroom before being taken out in Room of Ancient Warriors. Now, with about a minute left on the clock, you?d think that someone would have no problem following a completely set path, whose only objective would be grabbing the artifact, crossing a bridge, and walking down a flight of stairs. But if you think that, you don?t know Mikey. He goes through the ledges feet first to ensure that he wastes as much time as possible. In the Rock Quarry, he tries to climb up. In the Throne Room, he tries to take the ladder up. In the Swamp, he tries to go up despite the lack of door. Time expires as he falls down into the Swamp?s packing peanut concoction.

For making it to the temple, both team members won a GeoSafari Globe, which I have no doubt in my mind Mikey will try to eat, mistaking it for food.

With this episode, I was writing with the intent to show what would happen if a great legends player was teamed up with an inept moron. They average out to be a fairly average team, but I just wanted to emphasize how stupid someone could possibly be. Rejected ideas include him drown in the moat, answering 'fart' and giggling at the steps, kicking a Temple Guard in balls, and bringing the head of the Silver Monkey out of the temple instead of the artifact.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!  I LOVE all of those ideas!  Thanks man, you made my day.  Although farts crack up smart people and idiots alike... :D

One more rejected idea: have him eat his pendant.
