Rediscovery EP: The Attack Plan of Minoru Genda
« on: October 25, 2010, 05:01:17 PM »
Author's Note: This is one of the episodes of my independent project, Legends: The Rediscovery.  More information on the project can be found by following this link.

Episode 109px]

The camera swerves through a thick rainforest, and after multiple turns, it eventually stops in front of an ancient temple.  The eyes of giant stone head next to the temple gate light up red as he begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE!"
The show's logo forms as two halves of a Pendant of Life come in from the sides of the screen and merge; the show's name appears above the logo as the camera pans across the entire temple.
"With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk emerges from a thick patch of jungle plants and shrubs, then runs into the foreground and up a wide set of steps to greet the crowd. "Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple.  The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures of his temple.  Which one are we gonna hear about today?"

Faint orange lights underneath Olmec turn on, and the camera cuts to a close-up of him as he replies:
"The legend of the Attack Plan of Minoru Genda."

"Well, the legend is set," Kirk says in response as the camera cuts back to him, "and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the Attack Plan.  Will it be:
"Matt and Brianna of the Red Jaguars?" the camera pans to each team in order, their first names briefly appearing at the bottom of the screen?
"Xavier and Serena of the Blue Barracudas,
"Michael and Madeleine of the Green Monkeys,
"Josh and Lupe of the Orange Iguanas,
"Luis and Victoria of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Dustin and Amanda of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "but in the end, only one team will have the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  First, they have to cross the Moat, and here's how they have to do it today?
"Above each team, there's an ancient fishing net with a giant fishing-hook/zipline at the end.  When I say 'Go,' both players on each team are gonna climb up onto the steps and they're gonna grab onto the fishing net, and climb hand-over-hand across the net.  Then they're gonna grab onto the fishing hook and slide down to the other side."
"As soon as both players jump down to the deck, it's their job to run over here and hit the gong." He hits the top button on the Red Jaguars' gong? which lights up red? to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will be going on to the next round.  Are you ready, teams?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Are you ready, Olmec?" asks Kirk.
"Let's get rockin'!" Olmec replies.
"All right!" Kirk says in response. "On your marks, get set, GO!"

As soon as Kirk says "Go," the players hoist themselves up onto solid platforms just before the Moat itself so that they can reach the nets, which are hanging approximately seven feet above the water.  The Blue Barracudas and Purple Parrots are the first to start traversing across, and the other teams are significantly behind.  Some players nearly falter and have to rely on the occasional dangling rope for leverage, but the female Green Monkey falls before reaching any of these, ten seconds into the round. "Green Monkeys having trouble, but the Blue Barracudas are blazing!" The male Green Monkey is forced to go back along with his partner; the other teams keep plugging along, and the Blue Barracudas reach their fishhook/zipline first, twenty-one seconds into the round.  The Red Jaguars fall next, followed by the Purple Parrots, whose female player loses grip on the net on her way to grab the zipline.  On the other hand, the Blue Barracudas hit their gong, placing first after twenty-six seconds.
"We got our first team? here come two more!" Kirk remarks as the Orange Iguanas and Silver Snakes reach their ziplines shortly after the Blue Barracudas hit their gong.  The Silver Snakes place second after thirty-one seconds of Moat crossing, with the Orange Iguanas a moment behind. "We got three teams? still looking for one more!" At this time, the other three teams are just starting across the Moat again.  They begin to traverse across the nets, albeit a little slower than before this time. "We're just waiting for one more team? This is tough! They gotta move fast but they can't let go? and who's gonna be first?" Time elapses, and soon the Red Jaguars and the Purple Parrots are both close to their ziplines, while the Green Monkeys are only about halfway there (1:02).  A couple seconds later, the male Green Monkey slips and falls off the net, and his partner is forced to jump down after him. "It's two teams? a race to the finish!" The fourth gong is heard, ending the round after a minute and eleven seconds.
"And that's it! We got our four teams!" The camera cuts over to Kirk with the Red Jaguars by their lit-up gong. "The Red Jaguars made it across? just edged out the Purple Parrots! They're going on to the Steps of Knowledge, along with the Blue Barracudas?" Kirk holds for applause while the camera goes on to show each of the other qualifying teams? "and the Orange Iguanas? and the Silver Snakes! The Green Monkeys and the Purple Parrots gave it a great effort too; we got a great gift for 'em and here's what it is." Michael, Madeleine, Luis and Victoria will each be receiving a $50 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Starkist Tuna.

Rediscovery EP: The Attack Plan of Minoru Genda
« Reply #1 on: October 25, 2010, 05:04:44 PM »
When the camera cuts away from the consolation prize, the four remaining teams, along with Kirk, are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge. "As the quest continues," he explains, "it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the Battle Plan of Moniru Genda.  But teams: pay attention, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you a step closer to the Temple."
Olmec begins to tell the legend:

"One of the greatest tragedies in American history was the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.  The surprise attack was launched shortly after midnight on December 7, 1941, and although the American navy was quick to respond, they lost a number of ships and sailors in the battle.  They took a few enemy ships down with them, but the Americans lost and were humiliated that day.  The opponents were commanded by a Japanese admiral named Isoroku Yamamoto, acting on one of his associates' suggestions.  Legend has it the two had a meeting before launching the attack.
" 'Admiral Genda-san, what are we going to do? We have-u to go to war wiss zem!'
" 'I agree, Yamamoto-san, and I have a plan.' Minoru Genda reached into his pocket and pulled out a rolled-up piece of paper. 'Zey'd probably expect us to attack ze Philippines, so why not attack ze U.S. directally?'
" 'Zat's brilliant! I'll ask-u zat a decularation of war be sent immediatally?'
" 'Not necessary.'
" 'But Genda-san? ze conventions of war?'
" 'Wiss all due respect, I don't-o care! I made zis plan seval years ago and I waited long enough? and if we attack first, we'll have ze element of surprise! Who can argue wiss zat?'
"Admiral Yamamoto conceded, and accepted Minoru Genda's attack plan.  A declaration of war was sent too late, and the attack on Pearl Harbor became an infamous symbol for the Americans to promote World War II.  After the attack, Minoru Genda's plan disappeared, and it eventually ended up in the Temple.  Your goal is to find the Attack Plan and bring it back here."

"Thank you," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the legend, "but Olmec: where is this Attack Plan?"
Olmec replies:
"The Attack Plan of Minoru Genda can be found in the Pirate's Cove." The camera zooms in on a rolled-up piece of paper on the middle torch holder in the front of the Pirate's Cove, and then fades back to Kirk.

"Teams," Kirk begins, "in a moment, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're right, you're gonna move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or you run out of time, I'm gonna give the other teams a chance." Kirk starts walking down the steps as he continues. "The first two teams to make it to the bottom step? will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Olmec: we're now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
"Did Minoru Genda devise a plan for the: Attack on Pearl Harbor, Battle of Iwo Jima??"
A stomp from Dustin interrupts Olmec: "The Battle of Pearl Harbor."
"Correct."
"Nice job, Silver Snakes, step down!" declares Kirk, and the Silver Snakes move down to the second step. "Next question!"

Olmec asks:
"Did Minoru participate in: World War I, World War II or The Viet??"
Serena cuts Olmec off this time: "World War I? wait!"
"Incorrect," Olmec replies before Serena has a chance to change her answer.
Matt attempts to steal the question: "World War II."
"Correct."
"Red Jaguars, step down!" Kirk encourages, and the Red Jaguars move down to the second step. "Remember: we have to take your first response.  Next question, Olmec."

Olmec follows up with this:
"Was Minoru from: China, Japan or Thailand?"
Once again, Serena rings in first: "Japan."
"Correct."
"Blue Barracudas on the board! Step down!" Kirk calls out, and the Blue Barracudas move accordingly. "This match is heating up now.  Olmec: next question!"

Olmec's next question is this:
"According to legend, did Minoru choose to attack: A former ally, Before declaring war or In unrestricted sub??"
Serena interrupts Olmec again: "Before they declared war??"
"That is correct," says Olmec in response.
"Blue Barracudas making a comeback," Kirk narrates as the Blue Barracudas move down to the third step, "and now they're just one step away from the Temple Games, but remember: we need two teams.  Olmec: next question, please!"

Olmec now asks:
"Was Minoru an officer in the Japanese: Army, Navy or Air force?"
During the third choice, Matt buzzes in: "Navy."
"That is correct," answers Olmec.
"It's a tie on the second-to-last step!" commentates Kirk as the Red Jaguars follow the Blue Barracudas down to the penultimate step. "And now the Red Jaguars are just one step away from the Temple Games, too.  Next question, Olmec!"

Olmec continues:
"Was his commanding officer named: Yamamoto, Kobayashi or Mitsu??"
Lupe stomps in early: "Uh? Yamamoto??"
"Correct."
"Orange Iguanas are on the board!" Kirk announces as the Orange Iguanas move down to the second step. "This could be a comeback? Olmec: next question!"

Olmec fulfills Kirk's request with this:
"Is the highest rank in the navy: General, Admiral or Commander?"
Dustin gongs in: "Admiral??"
"That is correct," says Olmec in response.
"Silver Snakes are now just one step away from the Temple Games! It's a three-way tie now!" Kirk remarks as the Silver Snakes move down to the third level. "Olmec: continue!"

Olmec does so by asking:
"Was Pearl Harbor attacked on: April 15, November 11 or December 7?"
After a moment of hesitation, Dustin rings in again: "December 7??"
"THAT IS CORRECT!" Olmec booms, and the Silver Snakes jump down onto the bottommost step.
"We got our first team, and it's the Silver Snakes!" remarks Kirk as the Silver Snakes begin celebrating with one another on the bottommost step. "We're still looking for one more team, and who's it gonna be: the Red Jaguars, the Blue Barracudas or the Orange Iguanas? Next question!"

Olmec then asks:
"In our legend, did Minoru think the U.S. expected an attack on: The coast of California, Alaska or The Philippines?"
Nobody wants to ring in at first, but Serena finally hits her team's marking just before a bell sounds: "The? Philippines??"
"THAT IS CORRECT!" bellows Olmec, allowing the Blue Barracudas to join the Silver Snakes on the bottommost step.  At this time, Kirk runs back onscreen and makes his way over to the bottom level of the Steps of Knowledge before the team players can start celebrating with one another.
"We got our two teams going on to the Temple Games!" he announces as he runs up onto the step and faces the camera again; the four players begin to high-five one another in front of him. "They are the Silver Snakes and the Blue Barracudas! The Red Jaguars and the Orange Iguanas gave it a great effort too.  We got a great gift for 'em for playing and here's what it is." Matt, Brianna, Lupe and Josh will each be receiving a copy of Ponyo on DVD.
The screen wipes to show just Kirk, the Blue Barracudas and the Silver Snakes on the bottommost level of the Steps of Knowledge. "These two teams'll be playing for the right to enter Olmec's Temple? right after this!" A camera swings down from the area just in front of the Upper Terrace through the Central Reef, Cannon Room and the outcropping of the Bamboo Forest.  The show's logo reappears when the camera stops in front of a tangled mass of bamboo shoots, and the camera then fades to black for commercials.

Rediscovery EP: The Attack Plan of Minoru Genda
« Reply #2 on: October 25, 2010, 05:13:44 PM »
When the camera fades in from black, the show's titlecard is placed over a shot of the fog machine on the back wall of the Upper Terrace, which is currently turned off.  The pendant splits and the title shrinks into the distance; the camera zooms out to add to the effect, and a couple seconds after the title is completely gone, the camera segues to Kirk standing in front of the Cannon Room with the two remaining teams on either side.
"Welcome back to Legends!" he says. "Now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, so let's talk to our two teams." He turns to the left side of the screen to talk with the Silver Snakes, starting with a blue-eyed boy with visible platinum blond bangs. "On the Silver Snakes, we have Dustin.  How old are you?"
"Thirteen," he answers.
"And it says here you're a long-distance runner, but you also like acting??" Kirk reads from the index card in his hand. "Tell me about that."
"Well," he explains with a laugh, "me and my friends make a lot of short movie? uh, spoofs? and I end up starring in a lot of the action ones."
"And do you wanna go into real movies someday?"
"Maybe," Dustin answers with a smirk.
"All right," Kirk replies, having to stifle a laugh for some reason.  He then goes to talk to Dustin's partner, a brown-eyed girl whose wavy chestnut-brown hair is tied back in a ponytail.  The girl is also wearing a silver waterproof coat over her team shirt. "And also on the Silver Snakes, we have Amanda.  How old are you, Amanda?"
"Fourteen."
"And I heard you're on your school's swim team, and you have a ton of pets," reads Kirk. "How many do you have?"
"Well?" Amanda's eyes point upward as if she is trying hard to remember. "I got six cats, a rabbit and about a dozen fish."
"And is it hard taking care of all those different kinds of? uh, pets?"
"Just need to keep them apart," she explains.
"Ah, all right then," Kirk answers. "We've got a talented team here, so let's hear it for the Silver Snakes!" The audience applauds momentarily, and Dustin and Amanda high-ten during this.  In the meantime, Kirk turns to the right side of the screen and soon proceeds to talk to the Blue Barracudas, starting with a tall, brown-eyed boy with wavy bangs of stringy black hair.  The boy is also wearing a blue waterproof coat over his team shirt. "And on the Blue Barracudas, we have Xavier? or should I call you 'X.G.'?"
Xavier shrugs and cracks a smile.
"How old are you?"
"Fifteen."
"And now I understand you're really into music? you play an instrument?"
"I've been playing bass for? about five or six years," he explains with a laugh. "I'm starting to learn guitar too, but I mostly play bass for different bands? you had one of my bandmates on the show."
"Really?" Kirk chuckles. "I guess I REALLY gotta check out your music now?" He laughs again, then goes to interview Xavier's partner at the far right edge of the screen, a slightly-shorter black girl with epicanthic folds around her eyes, and straightened hair pulled back into a ponytail. "And Serena, how old are you?"
"Fourteen."
"And I hear you like swimming, diving and volleyball.  Which is your favorite?"
"Probably volleyball 'cause I'm best at it," Serena laughs.
"Are you on a team for any of those?"
"Yeah, I'm on my school's swim team."
"Ooh, maybe you girls should get together some time," Kirk suggests, looking at Amanda before turning back to Serena and then facing the audience. "Let's hear it for the Blue Barracudas!" The audience applauds again, and this time, Xavier and Serena clap along.

"All right, now teams: go get ready for the Temple Games!" Kirk commands while pointing offscreen to the left and then to the right.  As Kirk faces the camera again, Xavier and Amanda walk off to the left, and Serena and Dustin to the right. "In the Temple Games, each team is competing for?" he opens a pouch and pulls out a small gold medallion to show to the camera? " Pendants of Life.  The winning team's gonna need those Pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through the Temple.  There are three Temple Games.  Olmec: will you tell us about Temple Game #1?"

Olmec begins:
"Pearl Harbor in Hawaii became an infamous battle site, but it took a while for the Japanese navy to reach their destination.  In this game, you will only have one minute to set up the defense.  Behind you is a very slippery slope.  When Kirk gives the signal, push the first ship up the slope with your backs until you reach the top.  Place the ship there, and water will flow down the slope as you slide back down.  Then, take the next ship and do it again.
"The player with the most ships at the top of the waterfall after 60 seconds? wins!"
"All right, our players gotta prepare for war," Kirk remarks as the camera segues from Olmec to him standing in front of the players and the equipment for the game, "so let's put 60 seconds on the clock!" With a banging sound effect, a countdown clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and Kirk dashes out of the camera frame before noticing the players are a bit too far in front of their respective slopes. "Might wanna get into position?" Both players back up until they are sitting on the bottom edges of each slope. "On your mark, get set, GO!"
"There they go? they can't use their hands? I mean, they can't turn around!" Kirk remarks as Xavier and Amanda make their ways up the slopes, both at a fairly quick clip at first.  "They gotta go up on their backs!" After only about ten seconds or so, the players are both nearing the halfway mark of the slope, although Xavier starts out a bit faster; he almost falters at this point, which buys Amanda the time needed to catch up. "About a mirror image so far? It's not who's fastest, but who's got the most ships up at the top at the end!" With about 45 seconds left, Xavier slips and slides partway down the slope before stopping his descent. "Augh, Blue Barracudas fell behind, but can the Silver Snakes keep? or hold onto their lead?" Amanda makes it up to the top of the slope with 32 seconds still on the clock, but Xavier is only a couple seconds behind. "They're at the top; now they just have to reach around and put the ship on the little ledge up top!" The players both move accordingly, and their ship models are placed on the racks above the water spouts at the top of each slope.  Amanda slides down first, with a stream of water following her; the same occurs to Xavier soon after, and both players head up again with 25 seconds remaining.
"Less than halfway left? They really gotta move fast if they wanna go again!" Kirk remarks as the players head up the slopes again.  Along the way, Amanda starts moving faster, but this doesn?t work well for her when she slips and nearly plummets all the way to the base of the slope (:12!). "Ough, Silver Snakes took a fall! That could cost 'em!" Xavier keeps moving ahead, but only just reaches the top when time runs out.  The clock splinters and a pattern of ceiling spotlights flashes to indicate the end of the Temple Game, and the players slide back down to ground level.
"Okay, that's?" Kirk ends up breaking into laughter again when Amanda and Xavier land at the bottom with big splashes. "Nice? nice splash! All right?" The players walk over. "Both teams got one ship at the top.  Both teams each get a half a Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds briefly while the players high-five one another. "Great sportsmanship here? The next game is worth a half-Pendant too.  Olmec: tell us about it."

Olmec continues:
"The attack on Pearl Harbor was launched before Japan declared war on the United States.  Legend has it that Minoru Genda avoided it so Japan had the element of surprise, and although others wanted to send off a warning telegram, the process was a little? 'tied up.' When Kirk gives the signal, jump up and untie one of the telegrams from the net above you.  Once it falls, come back down and place it in your bin.  Then, jump back up and do it again.
"The first player to bring down all four telegrams? or the player that's further along at the end of 60 seconds? wins."
"Okay, they gotta untie the telegrams? even if the war's already over," Kirk comments as the camera transitions over to him standing in front of the players and equipment. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock?" The countdown clock reappears in the bottom-right corner, this time accompanied by a silver half-Pendant in the upper-left corner and a blue half-Pendant in the upper-right.  Kirk then takes a few steps camera-left until out of the frame. "On your mark, get set, GO!"
Aided by harnesses and support cords, Dustin and Serena jump up toward the nets overhead, but only Serena is able to reach one of the telegrams on her first jump? thanks in part to her height. "Blue Barracudas off to a good start, but the Silver Snakes are right behind!" Kirk remarks as Serena quickly unties her first telegram, letting the rolled-up piece of paper fall to the floor with a whopping 55 seconds remaining.  Dustin reaches the net on his second attempt as Serena heads back down; she deposits the first telegram in her team's bin with a full 51 seconds to go.  Dustin unties the Silver Snakes' first telegram two seconds later and heads back down for it as Serena jumps up toward her net again. "Silver Snakes gotta make up some ground now? but there's still plenty of time!" Dustin ties the score when he drops the telegram in his bin with 45 seconds remaining, but Serena reaches her net again at the same time.  She quickly unties the second telegram, and it descends to the floor at the :42 mark.
"Blue Barracudas are blazing, but the Silver Snakes still gotta catch up?!" Kirk commentates right after Serena gets her second telegram in the bin with 38 seconds to go; Dustin unties his team's second one from the net a moment later and is about to descend after it. "She's tall; I bet that's helping!" Dustin soon ties up the score again with 33 seconds left, but Serena is already at the net again, working on undoing the third knot. "Whoever gets this breaks the tie; let's see!" Serena keeps her lead as the game passes its halfway mark, and gets her third telegram in her team's bin? after a little trouble untying it by almost losing her grip? with 24 seconds to go, just as the Snakes' third telegram starts to fall. "Blue slowed down a little, but she still needs just one more! Can she do it?" Serena jumps back up, and actually has to climb across the net for a little bit before she can reach the last telegram and untie it? by this time, Dustin has placed the third telegram in his team's bin with eighteen seconds left, and prepares to jump up again.  Serena unties her last telegram, letting it drop with eleven seconds remaining and then going after it. "Silver Snakes working fast to catch up? it's just a race to come back down first!" Dustin works quickly with his last knot and unties the final telegram with eight seconds, but it doesn't matter? Serena reaches the floor again and places the fourth telegram in the bin with six seconds left, ending the game.
"That's it!" Kirk shouts out, running back onscreen as the indicators disappear.  Dustin reaches the floor a couple seconds later. "The Blue Barracudas got all four of their letters before time ended.  She's tall, she's fast, and she just won another half-Pendant of Life!" Serena high-fives Kirk during the round of applause, then he goes over to where Dustin is. "So now the Blue Barracudas have a full Pendant, the Silver Snakes have a half? but this next game is worth a full Pendant; it's the third and final game, and whoever wins this goes to the Temple.  Olmec: tell us about Temple Game #3."

Olmec narrates:
"In the attack on Pearl Harbor, both the Japanese and Americans sunk many of each other's ships.  In this game, you will only need to sink three.  One of you is suspended in a sack.  When Kirk gives the signal, swing your partner at one of the ships and knock it over.
"The first team to sink all three ships? or the team that sinks the most ships in 30 seconds? wins."
The camera segues over to Kirk. "This is for the Temple," he declares. "Let's put 60? sorry, 30 seconds on the clock?" The countdown clock reappears onscreen in the bottom-right corner, along with a silver half-Pendant in the upper-left and a blue full Pendant in the upper-right.  Kirk then takes a few steps back and out of the way as the camera pans out to show the two teams in front of their ships. "On your marks, get set, GO!"
Dustin and Xavier reach for the suspended sacks containing their partners, pull them back and then push them at the middle targets.  Serena quickly connects with the target and kicks it over with 27 seconds to go, but Amanda isn't pushed hard enough to reach the target and swings back to the starting line. "Blue Barracudas already sunk their first ship!" Kirk remarks as the boys prepare to push their partners again. "Now the hard part: they need to change direction, and that's a little tough?!" The girls swing out again; this time, Amanda is able to reach the middle ship and knock it over, but the Blue Barracudas reach their leftmost ship and sink that as well (:21). "Blue Barracudas need one more to win? Silver Snakes need two more!" Both boy swing their partners out, but both teams narrowly miss any of the remaining targets on this third attempt, and swing back as the game nears its halfway mark. "It's tough to change direction?!" The boys push their partners one last time, and the girls move towards their outermost targets.  However, Amanda once again drifts a bit too far to the right, while Serena kicks down her team's rightmost target with seven seconds on the clock.
"All right, that's it!" Kirk calls out.  The indicators vanish from the screen while Kirk runs over; spotters also rush over to catch the girls and stop them from swinging and spinning, and then to free them from the equipment. "The Silver Snakes only knocked over? or sunk one of their ships, but the Blue Barracudas got three!" The audience starts celebrating prematurely as the girls are freed from the sacks and meet their partners. "That gives the Blue Barracudas the full Pendant, giving them two; the Silver Snakes had a half.  The Blue Barracudas are goin' to the Temple!" Xavier and Serena high-five a couple times before the Silver Snakes approach them and congratulate them. "The Silver Snakes fought hard, they had great sportsmanship and we loved having them.  We got a great gift for 'em and here's what it is." Dustin and Amanda will each be receiving a copy of the Pok?mon HeartGold Nintendo DS game.
The camera cuts back from the consolation prize to show Kirk and the Blue Barracudas standing next to the suspended sack Serena was in. "Now we'll see if the Blue Barracudas can make it through Olmec's Temple and retrieve the Attack Plan of Minori Jenda? right after this!" The camera swings back and flies over to the Viper's Nest.  It zooms in on the center snake jar on the altar as the show's logo reforms, then fades to black for commercials.

Rediscovery EP: The Attack Plan of Minoru Genda
« Reply #3 on: October 25, 2010, 06:14:32 PM »
When the camera returns from the second commercial break, the show's logo is partially covering a shot of the Attack Plan in the Pirate's Cove.  The Pendant of Life splits, the title shrinks into the distance and the camera segues to Kirk standing in front of the Temple's stairs, to the camera-right of the Blue Barracudas. "Welcome back to Legends!" he says to the camera. "X.G. and Serena have proven themselves worthy, and now they've earned the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  But first, Olmec's gonna give them some information to help them retrieve the Attack Plan of Nimoru Genda."
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You COULD start? by running up to the Room of the Ancient Masks! Push in the correct mask, and pass into the Upper Terrace! There you must choose your next path; you could race up into the Observatory.  Read the instructions on the far wall with the telescope, and follow them to open the door to the Central Reef.  Solve the correct puzzle to open the door to the Tiki Village! Push the correct idol into position; that may take you below or lead you into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey! Assemble the statue, and you may be headed toward the Pirate's Cove, where you can grab the Attack Plan of Minoru Genda.  Next, you might climb down into the Graveyard of Ships.
"Stand on the correct grave to go upstairs? but beware the Temple Guards that may inhabit the buried pirates!  Or, you might plow through the wall and into the Viper's Nest.  Reach into the snake jars and find the key, and you'll enter the Bamboo Forest! If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Cannon Room.  Load the three cannonballs into the cannon, and if the rock slab is up, you can crawl back through the Coconut Harvest and finally climb through the Cave, rrrrace down the STAIRS and back through the Temple Gate.  The choices are yours and yours alone!" Olmec pauses for a second. "You won 2 Pendants in the Temple Games.  Who's going first?"
"I am," says Serena, raising her hand halfway.
"Very well, Serena!" replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way towards the Attack Plan.  Hidden inside the Temple are three secret passages that may lead you into the Bamboo Forest, as well as Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms.  You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on BUT? if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple? and it'll be X.G.'s turn to enter and try his luck.  If you reach the Attack Plan, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish.  Return through the gates with the Attack Plan of Minoru Genda in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded? and here's how!"
?   For just getting into the Temple, they're both going to get an Xzibit Video Game Rocker provided by Dreamseat.
?   If they can grab the Attack Plan in three minutes, they're also going to get a World Book encyclopedia set.
?   And if they can bring the Attack Plan out of the Temple before three minutes is up, they'll both be going to Hawaii! In the heart of Waikiki, the Best Western Ohana Waikiki Tower participates in the Young Travelers Club.  Just steps away from Waikiki Beach, an area pulsing with excitement, shopping and entertainment!

The camera cuts back from the grand prize to show Kirk, Xavier and Serena one last time before the bonus round begins. "Hawaii! Let's get the Blue Barracudas going and let's get 'em there!" comments Kirk. "All right, Serena: get into position.  Put your mouthpieces in.  Lower the gate, Olmec!"
Olmec groans gutturally as he lowers the gate; the faint orange lights under him are turned off.
"Put three minutes on the clock." The countdown clock appears onscreen. "On your mark, get set, GO!"

"There goes Serena, up into the Temple!" Kirk declares as Serena runs up the stairs and heads to the initial fork behind Olmec and then slides down into the Cave. "They got two Pendants; how far can that take 'em?" Serena maneuvers through the gray ledges fairly quickly and gets to the lower crawl tube in just a few seconds; she hits the actuator to open the door and enters the Coconut Harvest with 2:45 on the clock. "This girl's fast! She swims, she dives, she plays volleyball? she's sporty and tough!" As soon as Serena enters the Coconut Harvest, she pulls down on two vines dangling from a palm tree positioned between the two catwalks of the upper level, releasing three coconuts (2:40). "She's gotta find five coconuts and throw them in the bucket, and she can go on!" After bringing those three coconuts over to the bucket, Serena finds two more in the front of the room just behind the raised outcropping and brings them over as well.  The bucket completely lowers, causing the rock slab blocking the Cannon Room door to rise as high as possible with 2:30 left.  She rushes over to the door, hits the actuator to open it up and slides on through (2:27).  She tries to go over to the cannon once in the Cannon Room, but something jumps out from the front-right corner of the room and tries to stop her?
"TEMPLE GUARD!" shouts Kirk as the guard jumps out. "She's gotta give 'im her Pendant? that didn't scare her! She's tough!" Sure enough, Serena is very quick to hand over her Pendant of Life, and the Temple Guard heads toward the doors in the back of the room while she heads across the front of the room, searching for cannonballs (2:21).  She quickly finds the first one on the ground immediately camera-right of the ladder leading upward, and loads it into the cannon as she passes in front of it. "She's making great time, but next time another Temple Guard gets 'er, it'll be turn for X.G. to go in!" At this point, the camera briefly switches to Xavier clapping.
"Go Serena!" he shouts out (2:11). "C'MON!"
"She's already got two?" Kirk continues the commentary as the camera switches back to Serena in the Cannon Room; she deposits the second ball in the cannon before moving towards the back of the room. "Now she's just gotta find the other three, and she can go on!" Serena moves behind the ladder and finds the third and final cannonball.  Just a second over two minutes remains when she loads it into the cannon, and shafts of light enter the dim room from the camera-left side and from above as the doors open. "All right, the door's open; she's going on into the Bamboo Forest!" The tip of the cannon's fuse does not light up, but the camera follows Serena as she crawls through the open door and emerges in the Bamboo Forest with 1:56 remaining. "She's gotta move through the forest and open a door? which way's it gonna be?" As soon as she exits the connecting tunnel, Serena jumps down and walks toward the back of the room, over to a relatively low opening in the first of three web-like tangles of bamboo shoots; she then hoists herself up and through, then reaches out for a horizontal bamboo shoot on the second parallel tangle (1:45). "It's tough to get through that Bamboo Forest? some players never make it out of there?" Serena starts to climb up the second bamboo mass until she reaches the ceiling.  She hits the actuator there, opening the door to the Tiki Village above, and starts to climb up. "Right after this, she'll be only two rooms away!" Serena climbs up and sets foot in the Tiki Village with 1:33 remaining.  She takes a couple seconds to step off the ladder, but before she can run over to the stage-left idol, the second Temple Guard appears to take her away.
"Oh, Temple Guard! X.G.: take off!" calls Kirk, sending Xavier into the Temple with 1:28 on the clock.  He runs up the first steps and slides down into the Cave; from there, he begins to follow Serena's path. "He's got his work cut out for him? but Serena cleared out a major path!" After a little squirming, Xavier makes it into the Coconut Harvest with 1:14 remaining.  He takes a moment to climb out of the crawl tube, then moves across to the next connective tunnel and slides on into the Cannon Room as well (1:07). "He knows where he's going, but he's got about a minute left!" Xavier quickly runs through the Cannon Room and enters the Bamboo Forest, then reaches out for the first mass of bamboo poles and swings his feet onto it (1:00).  He climbs up to a higher opening in the tangled mass, passes through and swings out to the second tangle with 56 seconds left.  It isn't much later that he has climbed up and into the Tiki Village, and he runs over to the stage-left idol as soon as he steps off the ladder (0:48). "He's gotta push one of those idols into position!" Xavier gets behind the tiki idol and begins to push it along the floor, as the slightly raised grooves allow. "It's heavy, but after this, he's only one room away!" Xavier has to change direction multiple times, but it isn't very long until the idol is behind the ladder and weighing down a supposedly unseen floor switch, which triggers the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey with 35 seconds on the clock.
"He's just one room away from the Attack Plan!" narrates Kirk, and Serena can be heard screaming in the background as Xavier enters the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. "Now he's just gotta put the monkey together!" Immediately, Xavier goes to the back of the room and jumps up for the base of the statue, then brings it back to the front of the room and quickly positions it (0:27). "He knows how to do it: first the base, then the middle, and then the head!" After this, he goes back to the shelves and grabs the torso and head of the statue in one trip, then brings them both back to the front of the room (0:23).  He spends a couple seconds placing the torso, but gets it in place eventually and then threads the rod extending from the statue head into the other parts, and presses down with fourteen seconds remaining.  However, only the door to the Graveyard of Ships opens, and not the door to the Pirate's Cove. "All right! He's gotta?" Kirk notices Xavier crawling through to the Graveyard. "Wait, the Pirate's Cove? it's not open! He's gotta go around!" Hurriedly, Xavier climbs down the first few rungs of the ladder, and eventually jumps down with just seven seconds left.  He stands on the stage-right grave and presses an embedded switch, causing the iron slab blocking passage to the Pirate's Cove to rise, but the skeletal arms protruding from the grave come to life and grab his ankles (0:05!!). "TEMPLE SPIRIT! Gotta give 'im the Pendant! HURRY!" Xavier bends down and places his Pendant of Life on the grave.  The skeletal arms relax and he runs over to the ladder to the Pirate's Cove? but time is up!
"Augh, that's it! Time's up!" laments Kirk, his hand on a crestfallen Serena's shoulder. "They were just one room away? just a ladder away? But they both gave it a great effort, and Serena here cleared out a major path." Xavier runs over to join the two as Kirk continues his narration. "But they still get the video game chairs, and I know they had fun here.  But we gotta get outta here.  Check us out next time for another great Legend of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!" The three all wave to the camera, which pans up and zooms out before segueing to a shot of the Bamboo Forest.  Other rooms such as the Graveyard of Ships and the Coconut Harvest can be seen, along with various shots of foliage outside the Temple and a brief shot of Kirk and the Blue Barracudas conversing, during the credits roll.

Rediscovery EP: The Attack Plan of Minoru Genda
« Reply #4 on: October 25, 2010, 06:17:55 PM »
Episode Summary
Episode 109px]

Name of Artifact: The Attack Plan of Minoru Genda
Season: 3
Layout: 3 (Hawaiian Layout; 13 overall)
Result: Failed acquisition
Team: Blue Barracudas
Pendants Won: 2
Location of Artifact: The Pirate's Cove

This episode had quite a few disappointing moments spread throughout.  The fishing-net Moat proved to be easy for the Blue Barracudas, Silver Snakes and Orange Iguanas, all of whom made it across in less than 35 seconds.  The other teams required well over a minute, unfortunately, before the Red Jaguars placed fourth and ended the round.

The Steps of Knowledge looked at the attack on Pearl Harbor from an interesting point of view (even though I'll admit it slightly demonized the Japanese), and included a bit of an entertaining answer: the first time the Blue Barracudas rang in, Serena answered that Pearl Harbor was attacked during World War I before trying to take back her answer and being cut off by Olmec. Funny, although it leaves one wondering why Kirk has to emphasize that only the first answer is acceptable during tiebreakers... Anyway, despite the mistake at the Steps of Knowledge, the Blue Barracudas joined the Silver Snakes at the Temple Games, and soon defeated them 2 Pendants-?.

Unfortunately, the Temple Run was too much for them.  I honestly felt like Xavier (otherwise known as "X.G.") and Serena were above average in terms of smarts and agility, but the Temple configuration was much more difficult than the diagram may lead you to believe.  For one, there weren't any simple rooms on this path? each involved either an actual objective or navigation, unlike, say, the Upper Terrace or the Viper's Nest going left.  Passing through eight such rooms is brutal for Season 3, and both players having to maneuver through the Bamboo Forest certainly didn't help.  Both players fought hard, but ultimately time ran out just as Xavier was about to climb up into the Pirate's Cove.  Quite a shame, really.

Trivia and Records:
During the player interviews, it was revealed that bassist Xavier of the Blue Barracudas is/was in Initial Reaction, a band whose drummer is/was Temple Run victor R.J. from last season's "The Cracked Teacup of Elizabeth Cady Stanton." As further coincidence, both Xavier and R.J. were Blue Barracudas and advanced to the Temple Run after defeating the Silver Snakes at the Temple Games.

Uh...wasn't the guy's name "R.J.", not "R.C."?

All nitpicking aside, not a bad episode...brutal Temple layout design, though.

Hahah, good catch.  I think I had him confused with a Blue Barracuda from the real show when I typed that...
