Rediscovery EP: Lunalilo's Royal Crown
« on: October 18, 2010, 05:00:05 PM »
Author's Note: This is one of the episodes of my independent project, Legends: The Rediscovery.  More information on the project can be found by following this link.

Episode 108px]

The camera swerves through a thick rainforest, and after multiple turns, it eventually stops in front of an ancient temple.  The eyes of giant stone head next to the temple gate light up red as he begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE!"
The show's logo forms as two halves of a Pendant of Life come in from the sides of the screen and merge; the show's name appears above the logo as the camera pans across the entire temple.
"With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk emerges from a thick patch of jungle plants and shrubs, then runs into the foreground and up a wide set of steps to greet the crowd. "Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple.  The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures of his temple.  Which one are we gonna hear about today?"

Faint orange lights underneath Olmec turn on, and the camera cuts to a close-up of him as he replies:
"The legend of Lunalilo's Royal Crown."

"All right! Well, now our legend is set," Kirk says in response as the camera cuts back to him, "and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the Crown.  Will it be:
"Jake and Sam of the Red Jaguars?" the camera pans to each team in order, their first names briefly appearing at the bottom of the screen?
"Josh and Kara of the Blue Barracudas,
"Andrew and Faith of the Green Monkeys,
"Kyle and Taylor of the Orange Iguanas,
"Robert and Michaela of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Travis and Jenna of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "and in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  But first, they'll have to cross the Moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today?
"Above each team, there's an ancient fishing net with a giant fishing-hook/zipline at the end.  When I say 'Go,' both players are gonna climb up onto the steps and grab onto the fishing net, and climb hand-over-hand across the net.  Then they'll both grab onto the fishing hook and slide down to the other side."
"As soon as both players jump down onto the deck, it's their job to run over here and hit their gong." He hits the top button on the Red Jaguars' gong? which lights up red? to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will be going on to the next round.  Are you ready, teams?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Are you ready, Olmec?" asks Kirk.
"Let's get rockin'!" Olmec replies.
"All right!" Kirk says in response. "On your marks, get set, GO!"

The Moat crossing begins, and both players on each team climb up onto boxy platforms on the starting side of the Moat to help them reach the fishing nets hanging about seven feet above the water.  Soon thereafter, the players begin to make their ways across on the nets, but the Red Jaguars develop a notable lead over the other teams in very little time. "Some of the teams having trouble?  You wanna keep moving, but you wanna hold on until the end? It's not easy!"
Sure enough, along the way some players nearly falter, but there are scattered dangling ropes which the players can use for leverage.  The Red Jaguars get to their fishhook/zipline after about twenty-four seconds, and both ride it to the far side of the Moat.  When they touch the floor, both get off, and the female Jaguar hits her team's gong first, after only twenty-nine seconds. "We got our first team, and here come the? ough, Green Monkeys gotta go back!" Just as the Blue Barracudas get to their zipline as well, the female Green Monkey loses her grip on the net and falls into the water, forcing her team to restart thirty-one seconds into the round.  A few seconds later, the Blue Barracudas land on the other side of the Moat and place second. "The Blue Barracudas are in! We need two more teams? and here they are!" Mere seconds later, the Orange Iguanas and Purple Parrots lock in within a second of each other, and the Moat crossing is over in forty seconds.
"We got our four teams!" Kirk declares as the camera switches over to him standing by the Red Jaguars and their gong, an arm slung around each player's shoulder. "The Red Jaguars blazed across the Moat? great job by both players! They're going on to the Steps of Knowledge, along with the Blue Barracudas?" the camera goes down the line to briefly show each of the other qualifying teams, with Kirk allowing for applause? "and the Orange Iguanas? and the Purple Parrots! The Green Monkeys and the Silver Snakes gave it a great effort too.  We got a nice gift for them for playing and here's what it is."
Dee reads the consolation prize:
"Look at the entertaining fun you'll have when you strap on Moon Shoes! Super excitement is yours when you bounce higher than ever! Don't leave earth without Moon Shoes, from Big Time Toys!"

Rediscovery EP: Lunalilo's Royal Crown
« Reply #1 on: October 18, 2010, 05:03:48 PM »
When the camera cuts away from the consolation prize, the four remaining teams, along with Kirk, are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge. "As the quest continues," he explains, "it's time for Olmec to tell us about the Royal Crown of Lunalilo.  But pay attention, teams, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you a step closer to Olmec's Temple."
Olmec begins to tell the legend:

"When King Kamehameha V died without an heir, an election had to be cast to find out which of his relatives would be the new King of Hawaii.  The winner of the election was Lunalilo, and after he was crowned king, he worked to set up a more democratic government in Hawaii modeled after the American government? but of course, didn't try to convince people they didn't need a king.  But as popular as Lunalilo was, even he had to deal with tension.  One day, he heard of a mutiny in the army and went to settle the matter itself.
" 'What seems to be the matter here?' he asked the troops.
" 'We lost seven men the other day, and our commander doesn't even care! Now let's see how he feels!'
" 'But what will that solve? Put down your weapons and think.  That would leave you with no commander at all, and anyone who serves in this army should keep in mind that no one is expendable.'
"The soldiers looked at each other, sighed and put down their weapons.
" 'You're right? We were out of line.'
" 'But so was I,' replied the commander. 'Thank you for your kind words, Your Majesty.'
"Lunalilo smiled, and returned to the palace.  He was always eager to help his people, but unfortunately was only king for a year before he became sick.  Legend has it on his deathbed, he willed his royal crown to the soldiers who listened, and when they died, the crown made its way to the Temple.  Your quest is to retrieve Lunalilo's Royal Crown and bring it here."

"Thank you, Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the legend, "but where is this Royal Crown?"
Olmec replies:
"Lunalilo's Royal Crown can be found in the Tiki Village." The camera zooms in on a jewel-encrusted crown on the stage-right pedestal in the front of the Tiki Village, and then fades back to Kirk.

"All right.  Teams," Kirk begins, "in a moment, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, I want you to step? stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're right, you're gonna move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or you run out of time, I'm gonna give the other teams a chance." Kirk starts walking down the steps as he continues. "The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Olmec: we're now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
"Was Lunalilo the successor to: Kamehameha III, Kamehameha IV or Kamehameha V?"
Hesitantly, Sam rings in first: "Kame? hameha V??"
"Correct."
"Nice job, Red Jaguars, step down!" commands Kirk, and the Red Jaguars move down to the second level. "Next question!"

Olmec follows up with:
"Did Kamehameha V die: In battle, With Lunalilo as his heir or Without an heir?"
Kyle hits the marking first: "Uh? without an? heir."
"Correct," says Olmec in response.
"Orange Iguanas, step down!" calls Kirk, and the Orange Iguanas follow suit. "This match is starting to heat up.  Next question, Olmec!"

Olmec now asks:
"Did Lunalilo try to make the Hawaiian government more: Democratic, Absolutist or Capitalist?"
Sam gongs in: "Capitalist??"
"Incorrect."
Nobody else wants to try at first, but John buzzes in just before the buzzer: "Demo? cratic??"
"Correct," replies Olmec.
"Blue Barracudas, step down!" Kirk encourages, and the Blue Barracudas move down to the second step as well. "There's plenty of time for the Purple Parrots to catch up.  Next question, Olmec!"

Olmec's next question is this:
"Did he have to put down a dispute within: The working class, His legislators or The army?"
Sam stomps down and answers: "The army."
"That is correct," says Olmec in response.
"The Red Jaguars are now one step away from the Temple Games!" remarks Kirk as the Red Jaguars move down to the penultimate level. "But remember: we need two teams.  Olmec: next question."

Olmec continues:
"According to the legend, were the troops upset because their commander: Was too strict, Didn't seem to care about their losses or Struck a deal with??"
A stomp from Kyle interrupts Olmec for the first time: "He? didn't care about their losses? I think."
"That is correct."
"It's a tie on the second-to-last step!" Kirk commentates as the Orange Iguanas follow the Red Jaguars again. "Still plenty of time for the other two teams.  Olmec: next question."

Olmec asks:
"In our legend, did Lunalilo will his crown away to: The next king in line, The commander he talked to or The soldiers who listened to his advice?"
John steps in: "The commander? he talked to??"
"Incorrect."
Michaela hits the marking second: "The? The soldiers that listened."
There is a brief pause.
"Correct."
"Purple Parrots are on the board!" shouts Kirk as the Purple Parrots move down to the second step. "Could they catch up? We'll see! Olmec: continue!"

Olmec does so by asking:
"Did he only reign for: About six months, About a year or About two years?"
During the third choice, John presses down on his team's marking: "About a year??"
"That is correct," says Olmec in response.
"Next correct response and the Blue Barracudas are going on to the Temple Games!" explains Kirk as the Blue Barracudas join the Red Jaguars and Orange Iguanas on the third level. "We need two teams; who's it gonna be? Next question, Olmec!"

Olmec fulfills Kirk's request with this:
"The soldiers Lunalilo talked to were trying to rebel against their commander.  Is this type of behavior called: Misdemeanor, Mutiny or Mortif??"
With her partner's help, Michaela beats the other teams to the buzzer: "Munity? uh, mutiny??"
"That is correct."
"It's a four-way tie on the second-to-last step!" Kirk declares, and the audience cheers louder than before as the Purple Parrots join the other teams on the penultimate layer. "The next two correct responses will be going on to the Temple Games! Olmec: next question!"

Olmec then asks:
"Did Lunalilo become king: By being the first to volunteer, As chosen by Kamehameha's wife or Through an election?"
Kyle hits the marking first: "He was elected??"
"THAT IS CORRECT!" bellows Olmec, and the Orange Iguanas jump down onto the camera-right half of the bottommost step.
"We got our first team going on to the Temple Games!" Kirk exclaims as the Orange Iguanas begin celebrating. "It's the Orange Iguanas! We still have room for one more team, and who's it gonna be? Next question, Olmec!"

Olmec asks:
"According to our legend, did Lunalilo tell the soldiers that: No one should be seen as expendable, The commander is always right or They were not fit to serve??"
Michaela rings in, but then stammers a little: "They weren't? expandable??"
"THAT IS CORRECT!" booms Olmec, allowing the Purple Parrots to move around the Orange Iguanas to reach the bottom step.  At this time, Kirk runs back onscreen and moves towards the bottom level of the steps.
"We got our two teams right here!" he announces as he runs up onto the bottom step and faces the camera again, allowing the qualifying teams to celebrate in front of him. "The Orange Iguanas and the Purple Parrots! Great job!" He high-fives the girl on the Purple Parrots before continuing. "The Red Jaguars and the Blue Barracudas gave it a great effort too.  We got a great gift for them and here's what it is." Jake, Sam, Josh and Kara will each be receiving a copy of Astro Boy on DVD.
When the camera cuts away from the consolation prize, only Kirk and the last two teams are still standing on the steps. "These two teams will be playing for the right to enter Olmec's Temple," he says, "right after this!" The camera moves along the outer wall of the Temple, starting at the Pirate's Cove and Graveyard of Ships and finally stopping at the mouth of the split Pit of Despair.  The show's logo reforms over this shot and the camera fades to black for commercials.

Rediscovery EP: Lunalilo's Royal Crown
« Reply #2 on: October 18, 2010, 05:13:01 PM »
The camera fades in from black, with the show's logo superimposed over a shot of the Central Reef and the pieces of coral surrounding the ladder leading downward.  The Pendant of Life splits, the title shrinks into the distance and the camera segues to Kirk standing in front of the Coconut Harvest between the two teams.
"Welcome back to Legends!" he greets. "Now is the time when the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest? so let's hear it for Taylor and Kyle of the Orange Iguanas!" The Orange Iguanas? a girl with brown eyes and straight, shoulder-length brown hair and a boy with short blond hair, hazel eyes and freckles? raise their hands and cheer during the audience's round of applause. "And Robert and Michaela of the Purple Parrots!" The short-brown-haired boy with brown eyes high-fives the long-black-haired girl with hazel eyes framed by rectangular glasses while the audience cheers for them.
"You guys ready to play?" asks Kirk.
"YEAH!" the players reply.
"Okay, then why don?t you go get ready for the Temple Games?" Kirk says, pointing in different directions, and the players walk offscreen as Kirk faces the camera again. "Now, in the Temple Games, each team is competing for?" he opens a pouch and pulls out a small gold medallion to show to the camera? "Pendants of Life.  The winning team will need those Pendants to protect them from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through the Temple.  There are three Temple Games, and Olmec? tell us about Temple Game #1."

Olmec begins:
"Lunalilo reigned as King of Hawaii for only one year, but he was very active and tried to pass a number of motions to help his people.  On the net above you are four of his royal decrees.  When Kirk gives the signal, jump up and untie one of the scrolls from the net.  Once it falls, come back down and place it in your bin.  Then, jump back up and do it again.
"The first player to bring down all four of the royal decrees? or the player that's further along at the end of 60 seconds? wins."
"I've never seen laws passed quite like this," Kirk admits. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock?" With a bang, a countdown clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and Kirk takes a few steps back to escape the camera frame. "On your marks, get set, GO!"
Kyle and Robert jump up towards the overhead nets, aided by harnesses and support cords to allow for higher jumps and slower descents.  Robert easily grabs onto the net on his first try and unties the first royal decree from the net within seconds, causing it to drop to the floor; Kyle requires a couple more seconds than does Robert, but follows his opponent closely.  Robert gets his team's first scroll in the bin with a good fifty seconds on the clock and prepares to jump back up; Kyle requires three more seconds to tie the score. "The key here," remarks Kirk, "is jumping high enough to get to the scrolls, but you gotta aim yourself so you don't have to climb across the net!" With 43 seconds to go, Robert lets his second scroll drop from the net just as Kyle reaches the Iguanas' net for the second time.  Robert glides back down to the floor and places the second scroll in his bin just before Kyle can even untie his second decree (:39).
"Purple Parrots are speeding up? can the Orange Iguanas catch up?" Kirk asks rhetorically while Kyle drops the second scroll in his bin, just as Robert unties his team's third scroll from his net with 34 seconds remaining. "They're almost evenly matched, but the Purple Parrots might need just one more?!" Sure enough, Robert drops his third scroll in the team bin just after the halfway mark and jumps up again.  At this time, Kyle is scrambling to release the third decree; it falls from the net with 26 seconds remaining and just before Robert can reach his team's net to work on untying the last scroll.  The Orange Iguanas catch up as Robert almost loses his grip on the ropes, but he recovers and unties his last scroll just as Kyle reaches the net again (:18). "Orange Iguanas really gotta scramble!" Robert lets go of the net right after his final scroll falls; Kyle tries in vain to quickly untie his, but Robert deposits the last decree in the Purple Parrots' bin, ending the game with fourteen seconds on the clock.
"That's it!" Kirk announces, running onscreen again as the countdown clock disappears from the screen.  Kyle lets go of the net and drifts back down to the floor to join Kirk and Robert. "The Purple Parrots got all four of their scrolls before time ended, so they get a half a Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds for Robert for a few moments before Kirk continues. "The Orange Iguanas can catch up in the next game; it's worth a half-Pendant too.  Olmec: tell us about it."

Olmec continues:
"At one point, Lunalilo proposed that Hawaii should trade with the United States to help its economy.  Although his people opposed the measure and Lunalilo ultimately took it back, in this game, you must carefully bring a few Hawaiian exports into America.  When Kirk gives the signal, grab the rope at your feet and swing across to the other tower.  If you miss the step, you must climb up to the top.  Grab a pineapple, and then swing back and place it in your bin.  Then, do it again.
"The first player to retrieve all four pineapples? or the player that retrieves the most in 60 seconds? wins."
"All right, our players are gonna be trading some pineapples for? well, I don't know what they're trading for," Kirk laughs as the camera segues over to him at the base of the stage-left tower. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock?" The countdown clock reappears onscreen in the bottom-right corner, and a purple half-Pendant appears in the upper-right corner as Kirk steps back and the camera pans up to the girls atop the stage-left tower. "On your mark, get set, GO!"
Taylor and Michaela reach out for their ropes and swing across to the other towers, but Taylor lands closer to the top of the second tower on her first try.  Michaela is slowed down by having to grab onto the ledge with her hands and climb a couple feet to the top, but still grabs her first pineapple a couple seconds after Taylor (:52).  They both swing back, and each land on the top of the first tower this time.  Taylor gets her first pineapple in the Orange Iguanas' bin with 47 seconds to go and starts back; Michaela is only two seconds behind.  On the second trip, however, Taylor falters during her swing, and spends few seconds trying to climb up the side of the tower using the rope while Michaela easily lands on the top ledge.  She grabs her second pineapple and doubles back before Taylor abandons the rope and uses her hands to climb up onto the tower with 35 seconds remaining.
"Orange Iguanas had a little trouble there? that might cost them!" Kirk comments as Michaela swings back across to the first tower.  She makes it across without any trouble, and deposits the second pineapple in her team's bin with 28 seconds to go; Taylor follows her across and ties the score up again about four seconds later. "Purple Parrots just a little ahead now, but it's pretty close?!" Michaela swings back over to the second tower much sooner as a result, and grabs her third pineapple with roughly twenty seconds on the clock.  On the other hand, Taylor rushes the swing across to the second platform, causing her to latch onto the side of the tower rather than the top. "Orange Iguanas having some trouble?!" Taylor struggles a bit to climb up the side of the tower; this prompts Michaela to stop for a second and concentrate on her swing.  Eventually Taylor makes it up to the top of the second tower and grabs her third pineapple; Michaela has already gotten the third of her pineapples in the Purple Parrots' bin (:11). "Purple Parrots need just one more! Can they do it?" With time ticking down, both girls swing across, but once again, Taylor falls a few feet short of the top of the tower, and is struggling to climb up, pineapple in hand.  Michaela makes it across, grabs her last pineapple and grabs her rope again, but time runs out just before she actually swings across!
"Okay, that's it!" Kirk declares, running onscreen again as a pattern of ceiling spotlights flashes to indicate the end of the game and the indicators on the screen vanish.  Michaela can be seen starting to climb down from the tower as the spotter on top pushes the team buckets? each suspended by a pair of support cords? over the edge, letting them swing for a moment before the buckets are lowered to ground level.  After a few seconds of delay, the girls are standing by Kirk as he prepares to count the scores. "All right, let's start with the Orange Iguanas.  They got?" he reaches into the Orange Iguanas' bin and counts the pineapples as he pulls them out? "one? two pineapples.  The Purple Parrots got?" he goes over to the Parrots' bin and does the same? "one? two? three pineapples! The Purple Parrots get another half-Pendant of Life!" The audience briefly cheers before Kirk continues. "So now the Purple Parrots have a full Pendant, the Orange Iguanas don't have any yet? but the next game is worth a full Pendant, and the Orange Iguanas can catch up.  Olmec: tell us about Temple Game #3."

Olmec narrates:
"Lunalilo put a stop to a number of rebellions in his kingdom's army, and legend has it this helped them to focus more and take on new opponents with ease.  But because we can't let you kill each other? in this game, you'll have to do something much less painful.  Before you lies a path with six of your opponents' flags.  When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will try to run out and grab one of the flags on the path, bring it back and place it in their bin.  The other player will try to throw rocks at their opponent.  If you're hit, you must drop the flag, go back and begin again.
"The first team to retrieve all six flags? or the team that's further along at the end of 60 seconds? wins!"
"All right, a game of 'Capture the Flag' for the full Pendant," Kirk remarks as the camera transitions over to him standing in front of the game equipment. "Orange Iguanas need this game to tie.  Let's put 60 seconds on the clock?" The countdown clock reappears in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and a purple full Pendant appears in the upper-right as Kirk steps back and out of the camera frame. "On your marks, get set, GO!"
The boys from both teams race out to grab their first flags as soon as the game begins, but when they pass marked lines on their paths, the girls are allowed to throw foam balls at them to force a restart.  Kyle narrowly avoids being struck by a ball thrown by Michaela, but Taylor hits Robert with a ball at the :55 mark, forcing a restart just before he could double back with the first flag. "Orange Iguanas need this to win, and so far they're ahead!" Kirk comments as Kyle deposits the first flag in the Iguanas' bin a couple seconds later.  On the second attempt, however, Kyle is successfully sent back, while Robert makes off with his first flag and brings it back into the safe zone, dropping it in his team's bin with 45 seconds to go.  The tables completely turn not too long after that, as Kyle is forced to start over again with 39 seconds on the clock while Robert high-tails it back into the safe zone with his team's second flag.  He drops it in the team bin with 34 seconds left and prepares to head out again.
"Purple Parrots are blazing now!" Kirk declares with a little more than twenty seconds left; Robert is just starting to run back with his team?s third flag while Kyle tries once again to run off with the second for his team.  Both make it into the safe zones this time, and drop off their flags with roughly fifteen seconds to go. "Orange Iguanas can still catch up? we'll see!" With time ticking down, both boys bring back another flag and drop them in the bins just before the clock hits zero.  The ceiling spotlights flash to indicate the end of the game, and all four players head over to the area between the two paths.
"That's it!" declares Kirk, running over to meet the players as the indicators vanish from the screen. "Let's check it out?" He runs over to the Orange Iguanas' bin and starts pulling out flags while he counts. "They got one? two? three flags.  And now the Purple Parrots?" He goes over to the other side. "They got one? two? three? four flags!" The audience prematurely bursts into applause, and Kirk is forced to stifle a laugh before continuing. "The Purple Parrots get the full Pendant, giving them two? the Orange Iguanas didn't have any.  The Purple Parrots are goin' to the Temple! Great job!" Robert and Michaela hug for a few moments, jumping up and down while Michaela squeals in excitement, as Kirk goes over to where the Orange Iguanas are standing. "The Orange Iguanas gave it a great effort too," he explains. "We got a great gift for 'em for playing and here's what it is?" Kyle and Taylor will each be receiving a $100 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Skechers.
The screen wipes to show just the Purple Parrots standing with Kirk in front of the equipment for the third Temple Game. "We'll see if the Purple Parrots can make it through Olmec's Temple and retrieve Lunalilo's Crown," he declares, "right after this!" The camera flies past Kirk and zooms in on the door leading to the Central Reef in the Upper Terrace.  The show's logo reforms over this shot and the camera fades to black for commercials.

Rediscovery EP: Lunalilo's Royal Crown
« Reply #3 on: October 18, 2010, 05:25:15 PM »
When the camera returns from the second commercial break, the show's logo is partially covering a shot of the Purple Parrots' torch at the end of the Moat.  The Pendant of Life splits, the title shrinks into the distance and the camera segues to Kirk standing in front of the Temple's stairs, to the camera-right of Robert and Michaela. "Welcome back to Legends!" he says to the camera. "The Purple Parrots have proven themselves worthy and earned the right to enter the Temple.  But first, Olmec's gonna give them some information to help them retrieve Lunalilo's Royal Crown."
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You COULD start? by running up to the Room of the Ancient Masks! Push in the correct mask, and pass into the Upper Terrace! There you must choose your next path; you could race up into the Observatory.  Read the instructions on the far wall with the telescope, and follow them to open the door to the Central Reef.  Solve the correct puzzle to open the door to the Tiki Village, where you can grab Lunalilo's Royal Crown.  Next, you might choose to enter the SHRIIIIIIINE of the Silver Monkey! Assemble the statue, and you may be headed toward the Pirate's Cove! Place the torch in the correct holder to go back, or spin the ship's wheel and enter the Graveyard of Ships.
"Stand on the correct grave to go upstairs? but beware the Temple Guards that may inhabit the buried pirates!  Or, you might plow through the wall and into the Viper's Nest.  Reach into the snake jars and find the key, and you'll enter the Bamboo Forest! If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Cannon Room.  Load the three cannonballs into the cannon, and if the rock slab is up, you can crawl back through the Coconut Harvest and finally climb through the Cave, rrrrace down the STAIRS and back through the Temple Gate.  The choices are yours and yours alone!" Olmec pauses for a second. "You won 2 Pendants in the Temple Games.  Who's going first?"
"I am," says Michaela, smiling.
"Very WELL, Michaela!" replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way towards the Crown.  Hidden inside the Temple are three secret passages that may lead you into the Bamboo Forest, and Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms.  You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on BUT? if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple? and it'll be Robert's turn to enter and try his luck.  If you can reach the Crown, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards? will vanish.  Return through the gates with the Royal Crown in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded? and here's how!"
?   For just getting into the Temple, they're both going to get a Schwinn Mesa mountain bike.
?   If they can grab the Crown in three minutes, they're also going to get an Xzibit Video Game Rocker provided by Dreamseat.
?   And if they can bring the Royal Crown out of the Temple before three minutes is up, they'll both be going to Hawaii! In the heart of Waikiki, the Best Western Ohana Waikiki Tower participates in the Young Travelers Club.  Just steps away from Waikiki Beach, an area pulsing with excitement, shopping and entertainment!

The camera cuts back from the grand prize to show Kirk and the Purple Parrots one last time before the bonus round begins. "Hawaii! Let's get 'em there!" remarks Kirk. "All right, Michaela: Let's get you out in front.  Mouthpieces in.  Lower the gate, Olmec!"
Olmec groans gutturally as he lowers the gate; the faint orange lights under him are turned off.
"Put three minutes on the clock." The clock appears onscreen. "On your mark, get set, GO!"

The camera slowly zooms in as Michaela passes behind Olmec, then switches to a cameraman inside the Room of the Ancient Masks as she runs up the stairs to that room.  She hits the camera-right mask on the back wall of the room, but as she does so, the door next to it opens?
"TEMPLE GUARD!" Kirk shouts out, and Michaela seems to be scared stiff. "That one really? frazzled her? but she's got a Pendant, and she can go on!" Michaela takes a few seconds before reacting, and soon hands over her Pendant of Life with 2:45 to go. "She's a little thrown? but I think she knows where to go!" The Temple Guard begins to retreat, and Michaela slowly moves over to the other mask on the back wall.  When she pushes it in, the door to the Upper Terrace flies open and she heads on down the staircase (2:39).  At this point, she starts moving faster by jogging across the guardrail-lined catwalk to the Observatory door. "She's picking up speed? that Temple Guard slowed her down, but next time a Temple Guard gets her, it'll be time for Robert!" The door opens, and she runs up the staircase into the Observatory.
"All right, he's gonna? I mean?" Kirk tries to stifle a laugh as Michaela moves over to the telescope in the center of the room and puts her eye up to the lens. "She's gotta read the writing on the wall; that'll tell her what to do?" While Michaela uses the knobs on either side of the telescope to focus, the camera cuts to a view of the writing on the wall, which reads "Solar eclipse as seen from Jupiter" (2:23).  A few seconds later, it cuts back to the Observatory, as Michaela steps away from the telescope and goes over to the stage-right altar in the front of the room, then grabs the Jupiter model.  She takes it across to the other altar and switches it with the Mercury model at 2:14, but the doors do not open yet. "That's not right? She's missing something?!" Michaela stands still for a few seconds before deciding to take the Venus model from the left altar as well; she goes over to the stage-right altar again and puts her hand over the other models before picking up the model of Earth?s moon and switching that with the Venus model in her hands.  She then puts the Moon model in the middle position on the stage-left altar, and it is at this point that the downward door opens with 2:02 on the clock.
"She wanted to go left," Kirk comments as Michaela briefly checks the other stairwell before starting to climb down, "but she's gotta go down? down into the Center of the Reef!" Once in the room, she goes over to the ladder leading downward from there and grabs onto the serrated, square-shaped annuli of coral surrounding the ladder (1:49). "In the Reef there's two puzzles? she's just gotta solve one of them!" Michaela picks up the first annulus and turns it so that the indents and gaps on its bottom fit into those on the top of the second annulus; she starts to stack the rest in this manner. "These Purple Parrots are tough? they came back in the Moat, they came back in the Steps of Knowledge?" Michaela works quickly with stacking the rest of the rings of coral (1:36). "But they won all three Temple Games! They're a tough team!" With 1:32 still on the clock, all six rings of coral are properly stacked, but no doors open.  Michaela looks over her shoulder at the door leading into the Tiki Village, then looks down into the trapdoor for the Cannon Room. "That didn't work? She might need to try another puzzle!" Michaela looks around for a couple seconds before going over to the "fish tank" in the front of the room, full of blue particles instead of water (1:25). "In the fish tank there are five fish; she's gotta hook them onto the walls!" Michaela keeps rummaging through the small tank until she comes up with all five plastic fish, each with a loop of string through them to make hanging them easier.  She then moves over to the camera-left wall of the room with 1:14 remaining, and hangs the first three fish on the hooks there in very little time. "She's got it now? Just hang the other fish and the door's gonna open!" Shortly after, Michaela has hung the other two fish on the stage-right wall, and the doors leading back to the Upper Terrace and down to the Cannon Room both open with exactly a minute to go. "Looks like she's gotta go down again, with just a minute!" Hesitating a little, Michaela climbs down into the Cannon Room.  She steps off the ladder and moves toward the cannon, but a Temple Guard emerges from the shadows and seizes her with 48 seconds to go.
"Augh, Temple Guard! Go Robert!" Kirk calls out, and Robert runs up into the Temple moments later. "He's gotta follow his partner; see where she got taken out?" Robert passes through the Room of the Ancient Masks and into the Upper Terrace (0:35).  Once there, he notices the open direct door to the Central Reef, and crawls through with 28 seconds remaining. "He got a shortcut, and now he's going down into the Cannon Room?!" Robert does accordingly, and even jumps down from the ladder to save time.  He starts looking around in the dimly-lit Cannon Room, moving around. "He's gotta find three cannonballs to fill up the cannon? Ough, I don't know if he's gonna make it?" In very little time, Robert finds the first cannonball in the back-right region of the room, and loads it into the cannon with fifteen seconds to go.  He then moves towards the back-left corner of the room and picks up the second cannonball there (0:09!!), then takes it back to the cannon.  He finds the third ball right next to the cannon with a few seconds left, and loads it in as well.  The tip of the cannon's fuse lights up and light pours into the room from the camera-left side as the door to the Bamboo Forest opens? but we're out of time!
"Aww, that's it!" laments Kirk, a depressed-looking Michaela by his side. "They had tough luck, tough rooms? they were right under the Crown, but they gave it a great effort, both of them." The camera switches to Robert, exiting the Bamboo Forest via the foreground and going over to join the two. "Here comes Robert now?" He soon meets up with his partner and Kirk. "They both get the mountain bikes just for playing, and they did a good job.  But we gotta get outta here.  Join us again for another great Legend of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!" The three wave to the camera as it pans out; rooms such as the Bamboo Forest and Central Reef, along with the Purple Parrots' torch and a bubbling Moat, are shown as the credits roll.

Rediscovery EP: Lunalilo's Royal Crown

Episode Summary
Episode 108px]

Name of Artifact: Lunalilo's Royal Crown
Season: 3
Layout: 3 (Hawaiian Layout; 13 overall)
Result: Failed acquisition
Team: Purple Parrots
Pendants Won: 2
Location of Artifact: The Tiki Village

This episode wasn't all that bad, but the challenges it posed were very difficult for an episode of Legends.  The Moat, as with the episode before, involved both players on each team traversing an overhead fishing net at the same time.  The Steps of Knowledge focused on one of the shortest-lived monarchs that ever lived (Lunalilo, who was King of Hawaii for just over a year), but even though this seemed like an obscure subject, the producers managed to get ten questions out of it.

The Orange Iguanas and Purple Parrots faced off in the Temple Games once again, but this episode featured a new solo game: the girls had to swing from one tower to a second, retrieve an item and swing back.  It was a difficult challenge, but I was impressed by how quickly Michaela mastered it (she only missed the summit of either tower on one swing, compared to Taylor of the Orange Iguanas).  In fact, both Purple Parrots showed a lot athleticism and determination in the Temple Games, and this led to them shutting out the Orange Iguanas.

Unfortunately, the Temple Run was a bomb.  Michaela apparently wore herself out after the Temple Games, because she didn't show the same speed here.  Furthermore, she cost her team a hefty amount of time after leaving the Upper Terrace? she chose to go up into the Observatory instead of the Central Reef, which would have been a much smarter move considering the location of the artifact.  The objective of the Observatory was fairly confusing, but this was nothing compared to the Central Reef, where we saw for the first time that the room had TWO separate objectives... and only one would open any doors.  Michaela spent almost forty seconds in the Observatory and just over a minute in the Central Reef before she was removed from the Cannon Room, leaving only about 45 seconds for Robert to get anything done (read: clear one more room).

In a nutshell, this run was pitiful in that only five rooms were entered, but to be fair, this probably wasn't entirely the team's fault? some of the room objectives may be a little too much to ask of a pair of pre-teens.  Hopefully something will be done about the time-consuming nature of the Central Reef in the future, but we'll see...

Trivia and Records:
This episode features the third occurrence of a four-way-tie at the second-to-last Step of Knowledge, after "The Holy Ankh of the Egyptian Deity" in Season 1 and "The Missing Signature of George Washington" in Season 2.
