Rediscovery EP: The Thrown-Away Battle Plan of Pyrrhus
« on: August 16, 2010, 06:31:04 PM »
Author's Note: This is one of the episodes of my independent project, Legends: The Rediscovery.  More information on the project can be found by following this link.

Episode 101

The camera swerves through a thick rainforest, and after multiple turns, it eventually stops in front of an ancient temple.  The eyes of giant stone head next to the temple gate light up red as he begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE!"
The show's logo forms as two halves of a Pendant of Life come in from the sides of the screen and merge; the show's name appears above the logo as the camera pans across the entire temple.
"With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk emerges from a thick patch of jungle plants and shrubs, then runs into the foreground and up a wide set of steps to greet the crowd. "Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple.  The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures of his temple.  Which one are we gonna hear about today?"

Faint orange lights underneath Olmec turn on, and the camera cuts to a close-up of him as he replies:
"The legend of the Thrown-Away Battle Plan of Pyrrhus."

"Well, the adventure is set," Kirk says in response as the camera cuts back to him, "and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the Battle Plan.  Will it be:
"Cal and Katy of the Red Jaguars?" the camera pans to each team in order, their first names briefly appearing at the bottom of the screen?
"Scott and Lily of the Blue Barracudas,
"Michael and Colleen of the Green Monkeys,
"Jake and Nikki of the Orange Iguanas,
"Andrew and Emily of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Matt and Tori of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  But first, they'll have to cross the Moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today?
" When I say 'Go,' one player from each team will? step? onto the steps in front of him one at a time until he makes it across, but if he takes too long, the steps are gonna sink and he'll fall into the water, and then he'll have to go back and start again.  Once the first player's across, it's his partner's turn."
"As soon as the second player jumps down onto the deck, it's his job to run over here and hit the gong." He hits the top button on the Red Jaguars' gong? which lights up red? to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will be going into the next round.  Teams: Are you ready?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"You should know that by know," Olmec replies.
"All right, well, I guess I should!" Kirk laughs in response. "Teams: On your marks, get set, GO!"

On cue, all the teams except for the Purple Parrots send their female players first.  The first players reach out for the first steps with very little trouble, but the Red Jaguar and Purple Parrot delay a bit and fall behind the other players.  On the other hand, the female Blue Barracuda is the only player already on the third step after only eight seconds.  In fact, the Red Jaguar spends too long on the second step and it sinks, signifying that she has to go back and restart (:10). ?Red? Orange Jaguar has to start over, Blue Barracudas are blazing!? Kirk remarks as the Orange Iguana also sinks, at the third step, around the same time, but other teams progress to the last few steps.  Eventually, the Blue Barracudas and Green Monkeys become the first teams to get a player across, approximately eighteen seconds into the round.
?This game? You gotta move fast or you?re gonna go back! Silver Snakes?!? Kirk shouts out hurriedly as the Silver Snake spends too long on her last step and it sinks, forcing her to start over after a twenty-second crossing attempt.  Eventually, the male Purple Parrot becomes the third person to successfully cross, after twenty-six seconds.  The remaining players? rates of travel fluctuate wildly, with some moving much quicker than others and some having to restart at different points.  Impressively, the Red Jaguar picks up speed and crosses the Moat thirty-one seconds into the round, prompting her partner to cross. ?We?re looking for four teams, it?s anybody?s game?!? Eventually, the male Blue Barracuda makes it across and locks his team into first place, forty seconds into the round.
?We got our first team? we need three more!? Kirk declares as the other teams inch toward the finish line.  The Green Monkey delays a bit too much and sinks at the fourth step after forty-four seconds, while the male Red Jaguar proves himself to be much faster than his partner.  However, it is the Purple Parrots who place second, right as the female Orange Iguana sinks at the final step once again and has to restart. ?Orange Iguanas gotta go back, but they can catch up? we still have room for two more teams!? The female Silver Snake finally makes it across after forty-seven seconds, but four seconds later, the male Red Jaguar gets to the other side and hits his team?s gong, earning them third place. ?Still looking for one more team!? Kirk remarks; at this point, the other teams? players are around the first or second step, but the Orange Iguanas are the only one of the three teams that still doesn?t have their first player on the other side. ?This could be down to the wire!? After a while, however, a gap develops? the Green Monkey takes the lead, followed closely by the Silver Snake, and the Orange Iguana falls behind.  After a minute and six seconds of Moat crossing, the Green Monkey slams down on his team?s gong? a split second before the Silver Snake? and ends the round.
?That?s it! We got our four teams right here!? Kirk announces, and the camera switches to him celebrating with the Red Jaguars around their round. ?Red Jaguars started off a bit rough, but they blazed across, and going on to the Steps of Knowledge are the Red Jaguars?? he pauses to allow the audience to cheer, while the camera goes down the line to show each of the other qualifying teams? ?and the Blue Barracudas? and the Green Monkeys? and the Purple Parrots! The Orange Iguanas and the Silver Snakes gave it a great effort too.  We got a great gift for them for playing and here?s what it is.? Jake, Nikki, Matt and Tori will each be receiving a $50 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Skechers.

Rediscovery EP: The Thrown-Away Battle Plan of Pyrrhus
« Reply #1 on: August 16, 2010, 06:35:40 PM »
The screen wipes to reveal the four remaining teams, along with Kirk, standing at the top of the Steps of Knowledge. "As the quest continues," Kirk explains, "it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the Thrown-Away Battle Plan of Pyrrhus.  But pay attention, teams, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you a step closer to Olmec's Temple."
Olmec begins to tell the legend:

"One of the most daring leaders in ancient times was King Pyrrhus, a cousin of Alexander the Great and a Greek general himself.  In 280 B.C., he brought together an army from many different territories to defend his kingdom against Rome.  He led the Greeks to victory at Eraclea, but the Romans would not give up so easily.  Legend has it the Roman Consul Decius had a letter sent to Pyrrhus and his advisor, Demetrius, and the two looked it over.
" 'A second battle at Ascoli next spring? Demetrius, start drawing up battle plans immediately.'
" 'Way ahead of you, Your Majesty!' He pulled out a rolled-up piece of parchment and laid it out in front of the king. 'You see, you'll divide the troops into three squadrons and attack the Romans from three sides.'
" 'Demetrius, that's a terrible idea!' Pyrrhus snatched up the battle plan and crumpled it. 'Those groups are going to get picked off one by one! We're better off keeping everyone together and sticking to a forward assault!'
"Pyrrhus fired Demetrius the next day, and when spring came, Pyrrhus stuck to his own strategy.  The Romans retreated and Pyrrhus declared himself the victor, but at a great cost: more than three thousand of his own men.  Because of this, a win at such a huge cost is now called a 'Pyrrhic victory,' and Demetrius's proposed battle plan made its way to the Temple.  Your quest is to find the Thrown-Away Battle Plan of Pyrrhus and bring it back here."

"Thank you Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the legend. "So tell us: Where is this Thrown-Away Battle Plan?"
Olmec replies:
"The Thrown-Away Battle Plan of Pyrrhus can be found? in the Graveyard of Ships." The camera zooms in on a crumpled-up piece of paper perched on the camera-left grave in the Graveyard of Ships, then fades back to Kirk.

"All right.  Teams," Kirk begins, "in a minute, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're right, you're gonna move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance." Kirk starts walking down the steps as he continues. "The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Olmec, we're now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
?Which of these people did Pyrrhus command: Greeks, Russians or Ot???
A stomp from Katy interrupts Olmec: ?The Greeks.?
?Correct,? says Olmec in response.
?Nice job, Red Jaguars, step down!? Kirk encourages, and the Red Jaguars move down to the second step. ?Next question.?

Olmec follows up with:
?In battle, did the Greeks fight against the: Swedes, Romans or Romanians??
Katy rings in again: ?The Romanians.?
?Incorrect,? replies Olmec, and Katy hides her face in her hands as she realizes her mistake.
Emily buzzes in second: ?Romans???
?Correct.?
?Purple Parrots, step down!? Kirk calls out, prompting the Purple Parrots to join the Red Jaguars on the second step. ?I think the Red Jaguars might?ve gone too fast? I dunno, but they can catch up, or can the other teams catch up? Next question, Olmec!?

Olmec asks:
?According to our legend, which of these strategies was used in the battle: Full-on frontal assault, Attacks from all sides or Infil???
Scott breaks in this time: ?Full? forward assault.?
There is a brief pause.
?That is acceptable,? answers Olmec.
?We?ll take it, Blue Barracudas, step down!? reassures Kirk, and the Blue Barracudas also move down to the third-to-last level. ?Three-way tie on the second step, but can the Green Monkeys catch up? Plenty of time.  Olmec, next question!?

Olmec now asks:
?Was Pyrrhus?s advisor named: Ares, Cosmas or Demetrius??
Katy hits the marking first: ?Demetrius???
?That is correct.?
?Red Jaguars are now just one step away from the Temple Games!? narrates Kirk as the Red Jaguars move down to the third step. ?We?re looking for two teams.  Olmec, next question!?

Olmec asks:
?Did the fateful battle take place at: Tripoli, Ascoli or Ravioli??
Emily stomps down and guesses: ?A?scoli???
?That is correct.?
?Purple Parrots one step up? away from the Temple Games!? Kirk explains, trying to keep his head as the Purple Parrots walk down to the penultimate level. ?Next question, Olmec!?

Olmec?s next question is this:
?How many men did Pyrrhus lose in the Battle of Ascoli: Over three thousand, Over five thousand or Over nine thousand??
After a moment of hesitation, Emily gongs in again: ?Over nine thousand???
?Incorrect,? answers Olmec, and a couple members of the audience can be heard chuckling.
Katy hesitantly rings in: ?Over? three thousand???
?THAT IS CORRECT!? bellows Olmec, and the Red Jaguars jump down to the bottom and high-five each other multiple times.
?We got our first team for the Temple Games; it?s the Red Jaguars!? Kirk announces, the audience cheering as the Jaguars celebrate. ?We still need one more team; still plenty of time for the Green Monkeys and the Blue Barracudas to catch up.  Olmec, continue.?

Olmec does so by asking:
?In our legend, did Demetrius recommend that Pyrrhus split his army into: Two groups, Three groups or Four groups??
After a couple seconds, Emily hits the marking first: ?Three groups???
?THAT IS CORRECT!? booms Olmec, and the Purple Parrots join the Red Jaguars at the bottom of the steps.  Kirk reappears on camera and runs up the middle of the bottom step before the teams start to celebrate.
?We got our two teams right here!? he declares as he turns around to face the camera. ?The Red Par? Jaguars and the Purple Parrots! Blue Barracudas, Green Monkeys, come on down here.? The other teams move down to the second-to-last level to meet with Kirk. ?These guys gave it a great effort too.  We got a great gift for ?em and here?s what it is.? Scott, Lily, Michael and Colleen will each be receiving a copy of Ponyo on DVD.
The screen wipes to show only Kirk, the Red Jaguars and the Purple Parrots at the bottom of the Steps of Knowledge. ?These two teams will be playing for the right to enter Olmec?s Temple,? he says, ?right after this!? The camera runs past the teams and zooms in on a large patch of foliage on the right side of the steps.  The show?s logo reforms and the camera fades to black for commercial.

Rediscovery EP: The Thrown-Away Battle Plan of Pyrrhus
« Reply #2 on: August 16, 2010, 06:42:18 PM »
When the camera fades in from commercial, the show?s title card is placed over a shot of some jungle plants next to Olmec and the Cave.  The pendant logo splits, the title fades into the distance and the camera segues to Kirk standing in front of the Pit of Despair with the two remaining teams.
?Welcome back to Legends!? he says. ?Now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, so let?s talk to our team players.? He turns to the left side of the screen to talk to the Red Jaguars, starting with a slightly-taller-than-average, hazel-eyed boy with a dark brown hair visible under the helmet. ?On the Red Jaguars, we have Cal.  How old are you??
?Fourteen.?
?And I understand you swim and skateboard,? Kirk reads off the index card in his hand, ?but it says here you collect dangerous pets.  Tell me about that.?
?Well,? explains Cal, ?I have a few pet snakes now, and I used to have a lizard and a tarantula before.?
?Ah, well? make sure you keep an eye on ?em,? Kirk laughs before moving on to Cal?s partner, a freckled girl with blue eyes and straight brown hair reaching the middle of her back. ?And also on the Red Jaguars, we have Katy.  How old are you??
?Thirteen.?
?And it says here you play two really different things,? Kirk reads. ?Tell me about that.?
?Yeah, I play soccer,? Katy explains, ?and I play violin.?
?Well? that IS different,? comments Kirk with a little chuckle. ?Which do you like better??
?Probably? soccer ?cause I?ve been doing it longer and I can play any position.?
?All right,? Kirk replies. ?Well, this is a well-rounded team, so let?s hear it for the Red Jaguars!? The audience cheers for a few seconds, during which Cal and Katy themselves clap along and Kirk turns stage-right to talk with the Purple Parrots. ?Hi, Purple Parrots!?
Both Purple Parrots wave; the girl appears to say the words ?Hi Kirk,? although not loudly enough for the camera to catch it.
?On the Purple Parrots,? Kirk comments as he moves toward a hazel-eyed boy with short, strawberry-blond hair, ?we have Andrew.  How old are you??
?Thirteen.?
?And I understand you play baseball and soccer, but you also collect comic books,? reads Kirk. ?Tell me about that.?
?Um? I have a lot of? Fantastic Four and Batman comics,? Andrew explains. ?Mostly newer stuff.?
?Oh, very nice,? replies Kirk, moving to the far-right region of the screen to talk to Andrew?s partner, a tan-skinned girl with shoulder-length dark hair and dark brown eyes. ?And Emily, how old are you??
?Thirteen,? she answers.
?And I understand you play basketball and you want to be an actress.  Tell me about that,? says Kirk.
?Well,? says Emily, ?I like a lot of? action and adventure movies, so I might wanna do one of those.?
?What kind of character would you wanna play??
?Probably? an athlete??? Emily giggles.
?We got a creative team here! Let?s hear it for the Purple Parrots!? Andrew and Emily high-five during a round of applause from the audience.

"You guys ready to play?" Kirk asks the Red Jaguars.
"YEAH!" reply Cal and Katy.
"How about you guys?" Kirk turns to the Purple Parrots.
Andrew and Emily give a similar response.
"All right, then go get ready for the Temple Games!" Kirk says, pointing in different directions, and the players walk offscreen? Cal and Andrew off to the left, Katy and Emily to the right? before Kirk turns towards the camera again. "In the Temple Games, each team is competing to win?" he opens a pouch and pulls out a small gold medallion to show to the camera? "Pendants of Life.  The winning team will need those Pendants to protect them from the DREADED Temple Guards as they make their way through the Temple.  There are three Temple Games, and Olmec: tell us about Temple Game #1."

Olmec begins:
"Pyrrhus was a great military leader until the Battle of Ascoli, and had a number of decisive victories.  In this game, the grid before you marks nine different places where Pyrrhus scored a victory.  When Kirk gives the signal, put a rock between your legs, grab the trapeze, swing out over the grid and drop the rock into the grid to mark a victory in that location.  Then, swing back, grab another rock and try again.
"The first player to drop a rock in all nine holes in the grid? or the player that's dropped rocks in the most holes in 60 seconds? wins."
"They gotta mark some wins on a map? Why don't we get them started?" Kirk comments from in the middle of the area used for the game. "Let's set the clock for one minute?" With a bang, a countdown clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and Kirk takes several steps to the side to get out of the way. "On your marks, get set, GO!"
Cal and Andrew swing out as soon as Kirk shouts ?Go,? but neither lands their first ball in the grid; both just bounce off and fall short of it.  The first point is scored by Cal, in the center-left hole of the grid with 49 seconds to go.  However, Andrew evens the score by landing a ball in the bottom-center hole at the :44 mark.  Both fail to score on the next attempts, but Cal eventually fills the bottom-left hole of his grid (:34).
?This game is all about timing and placing!? remarks Kirk as Andrew swings out, but misses the grid, with thirty seconds to go. ?You gotta figure out where the ball?s gonna go when you drop it!? A few more failed attempts occur; by the :15 mark, the score is still 2-1 Red. ?They go out again? Red Jaguars score again!? Cal covers the upper-left hole with twelve seconds to go and heads back. ?Can the Purple Parrots catch up? Just a few seconds left?!? Andrew misses again on his next shot, but finally scores in the bottom-left corner with three seconds to go. ?Just needs one more to tie it up?!? However, before either of the boys can try one more time, the countdown clock hits zero and splinters.  A pattern of ceiling spotlights flashes to signify the end of the game, and Kirk runs back onscreen to count the scores.
?All right, time?s up! Let?s check it out?? Kirk calls over Cal and Andrew, who let go of their trapezes and walk down the ramps to meet him. ?Purple Parrots covered up two holes?? he gestures to Andrew?s grid before doing the same to Cal?s? ?Red Jaguars got three holes! They win a half a Pendant of Life!? The audience temporarily cheers as Kirk and Cal high-five. ?The next game is worth a half-Pendant.  Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2.?

Olmec continues:
"Like any general, Pyrrhus had to prep himself and his troops for battle, and often this involved gathering weapons, armor or warhorses.  In this game, you must gather four of Pyrrhus's warhorses, who have gotten lost on the mountain before you.  When Kirk gives the signal, climb the mountain using the rope in your hands.  When you reach one of the horses, grab it and stuff it in your pack, then keep climbing.  When you reach the top, turn around and climb down the other side."
"The first player to reach the ground on the other side of the mountain with all four horses? or the player that's further along after 60 seconds? wins."
"These are some small horses," chuckles Kirk, standing in front of the girls and the mountains. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock." The countdown clock reappears in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and a red half-Pendant appears in the upper-left corner as Kirk takes a few steps to the side and out of the camera frame. "On your mark, get set, GO!"
Katy and Emily start to climb up the first side of their ?mountains,? but it isn?t long before they reach the first of their stuffed horses.  From the start, Katy moves faster, however, and manages to stuff the first horse into her pack with 52 seconds remaining.  Emily delays a little when she nearly loses grip on the rope, so by the time she reaches her second horse, Katy has just stuffed her second one in her pack (:45).  This pattern continues for a while? by the time only 33 seconds are left, Katy has already stuffed all but her last horse into her pack, but Emily has only stored two.
?They?re almost at the top,? explains Kirk, ?and when they get there, they?re gonna have to turn around and come down the other side!? Mere seconds later, however, Katy gets the fourth and final stuffed horse inside her pack and starts across the top of the mountain while  Emily finishes stuffing the third of her horses into her pack (:26). ?Purple Parrots trailing! Red Jaguars just need to come back down, but can the Purple Ja? Purple Parrots catch up?? Emily finally stuffs the last horse into her pack with nineteen seconds on the clock, but it?s too little, too late? Katy makes it down the other side of the mountain, and her feet touch the floor just as the clock reaches ?0:14.?
?That?s it! C?mon over Katy!? Kirk announces as he meets Katy and, eventually, Emily at the base of the mountain. ?Red Jaguars made it across with all four of their horses first, so they get another half-Pendant of Life!? The audience cheers once more for Katy, then Kirk goes over to stand by Emily. ?So now the Red Jaguars have a full Pendant, the Purple Parrots don?t have anything yet, but the next game is worth a full Pendant, and it?s the third and final game.  Olmec, tell us about Temple Game? #3.?

Olmec narrates:
"Legend has it that Pyrrhus was advised to take down the enemy from three sides, but rejected the plan.  In this game, you will need to take down a small army that used that same tactic.  One of you is suspended in a sack.  When Kirk gives the signal, swing your partner at one of the soldiers and knock it over.
"The first team to knock over all three soldiers? or the team that knocks over the most targets in 30 soldiers? wins."
The camera transitions over to Kirk. "Purple Parrots need this one to tie," he reminds the audience. "Let's put 30 seconds on the clock?" The clock reappears onscreen in the bottom-right corner, along with a red full Pendant in the upper-left.  Kirk then takes a few steps back as the camera cuts to a side shot of the two teams and their targets. "On your marks, get set, GO!"
Cal and Andrew pull the suspended sacks containing their partners back towards the starting line; in a surprise move, Cal pushes Katy towards the Red Jaguars? leftmost target, and Andrew throws Emily at the Purple Parrots? rightmost soldier.  Both, however, manage to knock over their first targets within seconds. ?That was the first one, but now they gotta change directions, and that?s always tough!? Kirk declares as the girls swing back.  Subsequently, Andrew pushes Emily towards the middle target, which she manages to kick down with a full nineteen seconds still on the clock.  On the other hand, Cal swings, but misses. ?Red Jaguars missed it, that could cost them, ?cause the Purple Parrots need just one more?!? Sure enough, the Purple Parrots kick their final target down with twelve seconds left, even before Katy could come into contact with another target.  The countdown clock and full Pendant disappear from the screen, and Kirk dashes onscreen once more.
?That?s it! That was fast!? he remarks, and spotters run over to grab the girls? sacks to make sure they stop swinging and/or spinning.  Kirk walks over to where Cal and Andrew are standing as the cameraman stands in front of the targets and faces the three. ?Purple Parrots came back in that one and they got the full Pendant, so now each team has a full Pendant? it?s a tie! Let?s bring in the tiebreaker pedestals!?

Two spotters roll in the tiebreaker pedestal, then walk off as the boys run over to it? joined by their female partners mere seconds later? and stand behind their respective gongs as directed by Kirk. "Okay, here's the tiebreaker rules.  In a moment, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, hit the gong in front of you.  You'll have three seconds to answer and I must accept your first response.  If you're right, you and your partner will be going inside the Temple in search of the Thrown-Away Battle Plan, but if you're wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other team a chance.  All clear?"
The players nod in response.
"Olmec!" Kirk shouts. "What's the final question?"

Olmec asks:
"Was the Battle of Ascoli called a 'Pyrrhic victory' because: Pyrrhus was in charge, It was a draw or The win came at a dange??"
Cal rings the gong first: ?He? won but it? uh, came with a price.?
There is a brief pause.
?That? is? correct.?
?Olmec?s made his decision!? Kirk announces as Cal and Katy go in for a hug and celebrate by locking hands and jumping up and down. ?The Red Jaguars are goin? to the Temple!? He then goes to talk with the Purple Parrots. ?Purple Parrots gave it a great effort too, it was a close match and we enjoyed having ?em.  But we got a great gift for ?em and here?s what it is.? Andrew and Emily will each be receiving a $100 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Skechers.
The screen wipes to show only Kirk and the Red Jaguars standing behind the tiebreaker pedestal. ?We?ll see if the Red Jaguars can make it through Olmec?s Temple, retrieve that Battle Plan of Pyrrhus? right after this!? The camera runs along the outside wall of the Temple until it reaches the Graveyard of Ships.  At this point, it zooms in on the Thrown-Away Battle Plan on the stage-left grave, and the show?s logo reforms before the camera fades to black for the commercial.

Rediscovery EP: The Thrown-Away Battle Plan of Pyrrhus
« Reply #3 on: August 16, 2010, 06:52:51 PM »
Following commercials, the camera fades in from black, with the show's logo placed over a shot of some bamboo shoots in the Bamboo Forest.  The logo breaks apart? the Pendant of Life splits, the title shrinks until it vanishes? and the camera segues to Kirk standing in front of the stairs of the Temple, with the Red Jaguars to his right. "Welcome back to Legends!" he says to the camera before turning to the players. "You two have proven yourselves worthy and now have earned the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  But first, here's some information to help you retrieve the Thrown-Out Battle Plan of Pyrrhus."
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You COULD start? by running up to the Room of the Ancient Masks! Push in the correct mask, and pass into the Pit of Despair.  There you must choose your next path.  You could race up into the Observatory, read the instructions on the far wall with the telescope and follow the instructions to open the door to the Central Dock.  Assemble the ship, and pass into the Den of Totem Poles.  Turn all the faces forward; that may take you below or lead you into the SHRIIIIIINE of the Siiiiilver Monkey! Assemble the statue, and you might be headed into the Pirate's Cove! Place the torch in the correct holder to go back, or spin the ship's wheel and enter the Graveyard of Ships, where you can grab the Thrown-Away Battle Plan of Pyrrhus.
"Next, plow through the wall and into the Viper's Nest! Reach into the snake jars and find the key, and you'll enter the Bamboo Forest! If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Cannon Room.  Load the three cannonballs into the cannon, and if the correct door is unlocked, you can crawl back through the Pit and finally climb through the Cave, rrrrace down the STAIRS and back through the Temple Gate.  The choices are yours and yours alone!" Olmec pauses for a second. "You won 1 Pendant in the Temple Games.  Who's going first?"
"I am," says Katy, who raises her hand in the air.
"Very WELL, Katy!" replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way towards the Rejected Battle Plan.  Hidden inside the Temple are three secret passages that may lead you into the Bamboo Forest, as well as Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms.  You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on BUT? if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple? and it'll be Cal's turn to enter and try his luck.  Hidden somewhere inside the Temple are the two halves of your Pendant.  If you can find both of them, you will get an extra life.  If you can reach the Battle Plan, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish.  Return through the gates with the Thrown-Away Battle Plan of Pyrrhus in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded? and here's how!"
?   For just getting into the Temple, they're both going to get an Xzibit Video Game Rocker, provided by Dreamseat.
?   If they can grab the Battle Plan in three minutes, they're also going to get a five-piece drumset, complete with cymbals and provided by Schafer and Sons.
?   And if they can get the Battle Plan out of the Temple before three minutes is up, they'll both win a San Diego getaway! They'll be staying at the Hotel del Coronado, San Diego's only beachfront resort, where they can surf, bike, just relax in the sun or even visit the San Diego Zoo! Hotel del Coronado!

"Let's see if we can get these Red Jaguars to San Diego!" Kirk says before turning to Cal. "But before we get started, Cal, I want to know: What's your strategy?"
"Well," Cal replies, "We're gonna start in the Cave and we're gonna keep trying to just go left as much as we can, and get there in as few rooms as we can."
"All right, let's see if that works," remarks Kirk before turning to Katy. "Katy: since you're going in first, let's get you out in front." She assumes the starting position. "Both of you: put your mouthpieces in.  Three minutes on the clock." The clock appears onscreen. "Let's put? the gate down, Olmec!"
Olmec groans gutturally as he lowers the gate; the faint orange lights under him are turned off.
"On your mark Katy, get set, GO!"

?There goes Katy! Up into the Temple!? Kirk remarks as Katy runs up the stairs and slides down into the Cave. ?She?s into the Crevasse, where she?s gotta hit a button to open a door!? Immediately, Katy heads down towards the lower crawl tube leading left from the room, but the door doesn?t open when she hits the actuator. ?That didn?t work, but she?s got two other choices? which way?s she gonna go?? Scrambling through the ledges, she climbs up towards the upper crawl tube, but once more, the door remains shut when the actuator is hit (2:41). ?Looks like she?s gotta go up? up into the Mask Room!? Katy climbs up to the top of the Cave, hits the actuator for the door in the ceiling and climbs up into the Room of the Ancient Masks with 2:31 to go.
?She?s gotta hit the right mask to open the door, and she can move on!? Katy starts on the back wall of the room, pushing in the masks on either side of the door, but nothing happens.  Soon after, she goes over to the stage-right wall of the room and hits the mask there, which finally opens a door to the Pit of Despair.  Katy dashes down the staircase and to the mount of the pit with 2:15 remaining, then starts to carefully make her way across the further-back of the two catwalks connecting the side ledges of the Pit.  She reaches the other side after a little while, then hits the actuator for the Observatory door and heads on through with 2:02 left.  Once in the room, she makes her way over to the telescope, but before she can put an eye up to its lens, something emerges from the back of the room?
?TEMPLE GUARD!? exclaims Kirk, and Katy gasps in shock as she turns around to see the guard. ?She?s gotta give up her Pendant so she can move on!? Katy stumbles for a few seconds trying to get the Pendant of Life off her wrist, but she eventually hands it over to the Temple Guard, and she goes back to the telescope while he retreats (1:54). ?She?s gotta figure out what it says through the telescope? what it says on the wall?? While Katy is looking through the telescope, the camera switches to a quick shot of the far wall above the audience? revealing the inscribed ?Switch Saturn and Jupiter?? before cutting back to her standing up and moving away from the telescope (1:47). ?I think she knows what to do now!? She then goes over to the stage-right altar in the front of the room, switches the appropriate models and pushes down on both as the door leading down into the Central Dock opens.
?This team?s all out of Pendants,? Kirk declares as Katy climbs down into the Central Dock, ?so next time a Temple Guard gets her, it?ll be turn for Cal!? Katy jumps down from one of the last rungs of the ladder, then goes over to the back-right corner of the room and grabs one of the two masts, which she promptly brings to the front of the room and installs in one of the two holes in the ship located in front of the ladder (1:29). ?She?s gotta put the ship together to open a door? let?s see what opens!? When Katy goes to the back of the room again, she grabs both the second mast and the crow?s nest (one in each arm) and brings them up to the ship as well.  Soon after, the ship is fully assembled, and the door leading down into the Cannon Room is the only one that opens. ?She?s heading down again! She?s going into the Cannon Room now?? Katy climbs down into the room with 1:16 to go and jumps down from the ladder once more, but before she can get started with her search for the cannonballs, a Temple Guard jumps out from his hiding place in the front-right corner of the room and captures her.
?Ough, Temple Guard! Go Cal!? Kirk shouts, and Cal storms up the stairs, entering the Cave with a minute and seven seconds to go. ?It?s his turn, and he?s gotta make up some time now!? Cal scrambles through the ledges, heading directly upward to enter the Room of the Ancient Masks with 57 seconds to go. ?They?ve got no more Pendants, but hidden inside the Temple? there?s two halves of another Pendant!? As soon as Cal enters the Pit of Despair, he jumps down into it rather than utilizing the catwalks, and hits the actuator for the Cannon Room (0:47).  Luckily, the door opens, and he slides on through. ?Now he?s gotta fill up the cannon to open a door! Forty seconds!? commentates Kirk while Cal starts looking around for the three cannonballs in the dimly-lit room. ?It?s tough to look around, but there?s three cannonballs?? In a matter of seconds, Cal finds the first cannonball located behind the ladder, and grabs a second one from the back-left corner of the floor with his free hand. ?He?s got two, he just needs one more!? Cal deposits the two cannonballs in the cannon in one sweep, then goes around to the left side of the room (0:28).  Soon after, he finds the third cannonball on the ground next to the cannon and loads it in as well; once the cannon is full, the tip of the fuse lights up and a shaft of light enters the room from the camera-left side: the door to the Bamboo Forest is open (0:22).
?All right! Now he?s just two rooms away!? Kirk declares as Cal emerges from the passageway connecting the Cannon Room and the Bamboo Forest. ?He?s gotta move fast, but he could still make it!? Immediately, Cal reaches out for the first of three parallel, web-like masses of bamboo poles in the room, and grabs onto one of the higher horizontal poles with his hands before letting his legs swing out and latch onto the interlocking bamboo shoots as well (0:14!). ?Cal?s tough! He has snakes and spiders? and he?s tough like them!? He quickly makes his way across to a large opening near the top of the bamboo grid, then stays close to the ceiling as he passes through and over to the second grid with time ticking down.  He inches up towards the ceiling and pulls a half-Pendant off of one of the horizontal shoots near the top of the second grid. ?Oh? I don?t think he?s gonna make it!? Cal breezes through the third bamboo grid, descending as he goes, and then jumps down to try the actuator for the camera-left crawl tube leading into the Viper?s Nest (0:03!!).  The door apparently fails to open, so he reaches over for the other actuator? but we?re out of time!
?Agh, time?s up, and they were just two rooms away!? laments Kirk, a depressed-looking Katy by his side. ?They just needed a few more seconds, but they gave it a great effort? Katy cleared out a major path, Cal moved fast but they came up short.  But they still go away with the video game chairs, and we gotta get outta here.  Join us again next time for more adventure and another great Legend of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!? On the last word, he and Katy both wave at the camera, which pans out before moving throughout the Temple.  A first-person walk across the Pit of Despair and into the Observatory is shown, followed by a shot of Cal returning to the foreground, which segues to the half-Pendant in the Central Dock and different portions of the Bamboo Forest as the credits roll.

Rediscovery EP: The Thrown-Away Battle Plan of Pyrrhus
« Reply #4 on: August 16, 2010, 06:59:54 PM »
Episode Summary
Episode 101

Name of Artifact: The Thrown-Away Battle Plan of Pyrrhus
Season: 3
Layout: 2 (12 overall)
Result: Failed acquisition
Team: Red Jaguars
Pendants Won: 1
Location of Artifact: The Graveyard of Ships

For the most part, this episode was rather dull? it had its moments, but they were few and far between.  I actually liked the legend for this episode, but otherwise the only thing from the first two rounds that stood out was the last question the Red Jaguars answered to get to the bottom: before they rang in, the Purple Parrots incorrectly answered that the body count in the battle Pyrrhus fought in was (and I doubt this was a coincidence on the writers' parts) "over 9000." <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/lol.gif" alt="" title="" /> Nevertheless, the Purple Parrots made it to the bottom on the very next question as well, although the Temple Games in which they faced the Red Jaguars weren't anything new: it was "cover the grid," "mountain game" and "swing the sack" in that order.  The Red Jaguars won the first two games, but the Purple Parrots won the third only to, once again, be defeated at the tiebreaker.

The Temple Run wasn't exciting in any stretch of the word, but it was a little intriguing in that the team had a little more choice than usual? mostly because the team had only one Pendant.  Even though Katy could only get to the Pit of Despair from the Room of the Ancient Masks, she then had two possible options from there.  Unfortunately, choosing the upper route, although it seemed smart, was merely a long redirect to the Cannon Room, which also involved meeting the first Temple Guard and sealing the team's fate.  The second guard removed Katy from the Cannon Room, and Cal raced in.  He chose the bottom route, which seemed smart? but he passed up the first half-Pendant in the Central Dock by doing so.  Time ran out as we found out that Cal was supposed to climb up from the Bamboo Forest? in which case the only way the team wouldn't have lost is if the third guard was in the Pirate's Cove and the Shrine-Graveyard passage opened.  In sum, a very deceptive design fooled a fairly clever team.

Trivia and Records:
In the Steps of Knowledge, the two teams that would progress to the Temple Games? the Red Jaguars and the Purple Parrots? each scored one of their correct answers on a rebound after the other team got the question wrong.  More importantly, though, this was the second of only two Rediscovery episodes where the Red Jaguars advance to the Temple Run with but a single Pendant of Life, with the first being "The Great Seal of the Axumite King" (Season 2, Layout IX).
