Author's Note: This is one of the episodes of my independent project, Legends: The Rediscovery.  More information on the project can be found by following this link.

Episode 100px]

The camera swerves through a thick rainforest, and after multiple turns, it eventually stops in front of an ancient temple.  The eyes of giant stone head next to the temple gate light up red as he begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE!"
The show's logo forms as two halves of a Pendant of Life come in from the sides of the screen and merge; the show's name appears above the logo as the camera pans across the entire temple.
"With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk emerges from a thick patch of jungle plants and shrubs, then runs into the foreground and up a wide set of steps to greet the crowd. "Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple.  The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures of his temple.  Which one are we gonna hear about today?"

Faint orange lights underneath Olmec turn on, and the camera cuts to a close-up of him as he replies:
"The legend of the Secret Water Scroll of Nefermesi."

"Well, one of our six teams will have a chance to retrieve the Water Scroll," Kirk says in response as the camera cuts back to him. "Will it be:
"Pat and Katherine of the Red Jaguars?" the camera pans to each team in order, their first names briefly appearing at the bottom of the screen?
"Cameron and Kim of the Blue Barracudas,
"Ric and Natalie of the Green Monkeys,
"Tim and Marie of the Orange Iguanas,
"Geoff and Andrea of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Dalton and Monica of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  First, they have to cross the Moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today?
"Each team is standing in front of five swinging steps: one by itself, and then two pairs.  When I say 'Go,' one player from each team will step out onto the first step, and then he'll pick one step from each of the two pairs until he makes it across.  Two of the steps are gonna sink if the player steps onto them and he'll fall in, and he's gotta go back and try again.  Once the first player's across, it's his partner's turn."
"As soon as the second player steps onto the deck, it's his job to run over here and hit the gong." He hits the top button on the Red Jaguars' gong? which lights up red? to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will be going into the next round.  Hey teams: are you ready?!"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"I SAID 'ARE YOU READY,' TEAMS!"
"YEAH!" the players reply even louder this time.
"Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"You know it," replies Olmec.
"All right!" Kirk says in response. "On your marks, get set, GO!"

The first players on each team (the boys, except for on the Blue Barracudas and Silver Snakes) grab the first swinging steps by the suspending rods as soon as Kirk shouts ?Go,? and they make their way out to the second row of steps. ?Here?s the transition: They gotta pick the right one and swing to the side, and it looks like?? All but the male Red Jaguar and the female Blue Barracuda fall by incorrectly choosing the left step out of the pair, but those two have to start over as well when they decide to stay to the right for the last row.  The other players are the first to start on their second attempt, but all those four players sink at the final step and have to restart.  The first team to get a player across is the Blue Barracudas, a whole thirty-two seconds into the round, followed closely by the Red Jaguars.
?But the hard part is remembering where you went? and you gotta move fast!? Kirk comments as the first players on the other teams also make it across; they get a little more of a chance to catch up when the second players on the Red Jaguars and Blue Barracudas mistakenly step on the left platform in the second row, which their partners did not move onto.  Eventually, the female Purple Parrot makes it across first, then bangs down on her team?s gong after a full fifty-six seconds of the round. ?We got our first?? two more gong sounds are heard almost simultaneously? ?three teams! We need one more, and it?s?!? The female Red Jaguar and the female Orange Iguana approach their respective gongs, but only the former?s lights up, ending the round after a minute and three seconds.
?We got our four teams right here!? Kirk announces as the camera switches to him high-fiving the male Red Jaguar near his team?s lit-up gong. ?Red Jaguars just edged it out, it was close, but they?re going on to the Steps of Knowledge, along with the Blue Barracudas?? the camera goes down the line to show each of the qualifying teams, with Kirk holding for applause? ?and the Purple Parrots? and the Silver Snakes! The Green Monkeys and the Orange Iguanas gave it a great effort too.  They?re not going away empty-handed, we got a great gift for ?em and here?s what it is.?
Dee reads the consolation prize:
?Look at the entertaining fun you?ll have when you strap on Moon Shoes! Super excitement is yours when you bounce higher than ever! Don?t leave earth without Moon Shoes, from Big Time Toys!?

Rediscovery EP: The Secret Water Scroll of Nefermesi
« Reply #1 on: August 13, 2010, 06:13:06 PM »
When the camera cuts away from the consolation prize, Kirk and the four remaining teams are at the top of the Steps of Knowledge. "The quest continues, and now it's time for Olmec to tell us about that Secret Water Scroll of Never-messy.  But pay attention, teams, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you a step closer to the Temple."
Olmec begins to tell the legend:

"In ancient times, one of the bravest children was the Egyptian Nefermesi.  She and her brother Kaptah lived with their father, the Pharaoh Khaphrar, in his palace at Memphis.  Khaphrar was an economic genius and a lover of the arts, but he lacked a smart general.  One day enemy tribes invaded Memphis and stormed the palace.  The royal family tried to run, but was captured and separated.  When Nefermesi awoke, the chieftain struck a deal with her.
" 'We've got your father and your brother, but if you want us to free them, you have to cross the desert with nothing but the dress on your back.'
"Nefermesi was nervous, but gathered the courage to speak.
" 'I accept,' she answered, and a couple guards watched as she vanished into the Sahara.  No one had ever crossed the entire desert before, but Nefermesi kept thinking about her family as she walked on, and ignored the mirages tempting her with food and water.  After a month, she arrived in Morocco, where some traders took her in.  They provided her with a feast that night and she shocked them with her story."
" 'You came all the way from Egypt? How did you survive?'
"Nefermesi smiled, and pulled a scroll from the folds of her dress.  Concealed in the rods holding the scroll together were secret compartments for water.
" 'I never leave home without it.'
"The next day, the traders decided to take Nefermesi back home on their ship.  When she arrived, the chieftain was so shocked that he freed Khaphrar and Kaptah and left the city.  Nefermesi soon got married and became queen, and when she died, the water scroll made its way to the Temple.  Your quest is to find it and bring it back here."

"Thank you Olmec," Kirk replies as soon as Olmec finished telling the legend, "but where is the Water Scroll?"
Olmec answers:
"The Secret Water Scroll can be found in the Bamboo Forest." The camera zooms in on a weathered scroll perched on the outcropping of the Bamboo Forest, then fades back to Kirk.

"Ooh, the Bamboo Forest.  Teams," Kirk begins, "in a moment, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, stomp down on that ancient marking in front of you.  If you're right, you're gonna move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or you run out of time, I'm gonna give the other teams a chance." Kirk starts walking down the steps at this point, then turns around to face the teams. "The first two teams to make it to the bottom step? will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Olmec, we?re ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
?Was Nefermesi the first person to: Cross the Atlantic Ocean, Cross the Sahara Des???
A stomp from Andrea interrupts Olmec: ?Cross the Sahara.?
?Correct,? replies Olmec.
?Nice job, Purple Parrots, step down!? Kirk declares, and the Purple Parrots move down to the second step. ?Next question.?

Olmec asks:
?Which of these was the relationship between Nefermesi and the pharaoh: Father and daughter, Brother and sist???
Andrea cuts off Olmec once again: ?Father and daughter.?
?You are correct,? Olmec answers.
?Whoo! Just like that, the Purple Parrots are now just one step away from the Temple Games!? Kirk declares as the Purple Parrots move down to the third step. ?We?re looking for two teams.  Olmec, next question!?

Olmec now asks:
?Was the pharaoh?s name: Khufu, Khaphrar or Cairo??
Katherine rings in: ?Um? Cuph? erm? Khaphrar???
?Correct.?
?Red Jaguars, step down, you?re on the board!? Kirk declares, and the Red Jaguars move down to the second step. ?This match is heating up! Olmec, next question!?

Olmec asks:
?Did Nefermesi have to cross the desert in order to: Rescue her brother from pirates, Have her family set free by their captor or Find her lost camel??
As Olmec is providing the third choice, Kim buzzes in: ?Rescue? her brother from??
?Incorrect.?
Katherine stomps down and guesses: ?Free her family???
?That is correct,? answers Olmec.
?Two-way tie on the second-to-last step!? Kirk declares as the Red Jaguars join the Purple Parrots on the penultimate level. ?The other teams can catch up.  Next question!?

Olmec then asks:
?Did Nefermesi survive because of: A scroll that secretly contained water???
Dalton interrupts Olmec this time: ?The? Secret Water Scroll.?
?A scroll that contained water,? Dalton?s partner clarifies, speaking into the microphone on his helmet.  There is a brief pause, and then:
?Correct.?
?Silver Snakes, step down!? Kirk calls out, and the Silver Snakes move down to the second step. ?Blue Barracudas can still get in this.  Next question, Olmec.?

Olmec?s next question is this:
?In Ancient Egypt, which of these was used as a material for scrolls: Bamboo, Animal skins or???
Kim gongs in: ?Papyrus???
?Correct,? says Olmec in response.
?Blue Barracudas on the board!? Kirk declares as the Blue Barracudas join the Silver Snakes on the second step. ?It?s a stompin? match! Olmec, continue.?

Olmec does so by asking:
?Besides the pharaoh, did the invaders also capture: Nefermesi?s mother, Nefermesi?s brother or Nefermesi?s sister??
During the third choice, Andrea steps in: ?Her brother.?
?That is correct!? Olmec shouts, and the Purple Parrots hop down onto the bottom step.
?We got our first team to the Temple Games, and it?s the Purple Parrots!? announces Kirk as the Purple Parrots high-five each other on the bottom step. ?We still got room for one more team, who?s it gonna be? Next question, Olmec.?

Olmec continues:
?Was Nefermesi forced to cross the desert: With a giant boulder, With a disobedient camel or Alone and without any belongings??
After a moment, Dalton hits the marking first: ?Um? All by herself? and she couldn?t take anything with her.?
?That is correct,? answers Olmec.
?It?s all tied up on the second-to-last step!? Kirk declares as the Silver Snakes move down beside the Red Jaguars on the third step. ?Next correct response and the Silver Snakes are going on to the Temple Games, but can the Blue Barracudas catch up? Next question.?

Olmec asks:
?Nefermesi traveled through the Sahara until she reached Morocco.  In which direction did she travel: East, West or South??
The teams hesitate, but Dalton rings in again, this time just before a bell sounds: ?Uh? West???
?THAT IS CORRECT!? bellows Olmec, and the Silver Snakes skirt around the Purple Parrots to hop down onto the bottommost step.  Kirk reappears on camera, runs up the bottom step and turns to face the camera before starting some more narration.
?That?s it! We got our two teams,? Kirk declares, ?and they are the Purple Parrots and the Silver Snakes! The Red Jaguars and the Blue Barracudas gave it a great effort too.  We got a great gift for them and here?s what it is.? Pat, Katherine, Cameron and Kim will each be receiving a custom Legends of the Hidden Temple watch provided by Armitron.
When the camera cuts away from the consolation prize, only the Purple Parrots, Silver Snakes and Kirk are on the Steps of Knowledge. ?These two teams are gonna be playing for the right to enter Olmec?s Temple? right after this!? The camera pans out over the Moat and zooms in to a diagonal shot of the Orange Iguanas? set of swinging steps.   Then, the show?s logo reappears and the camera fades to black for commercial.

Rediscovery EP: The Secret Water Scroll of Nefermesi
« Reply #2 on: August 13, 2010, 06:16:06 PM »
When the camera fades in from commercial, the show?s title card is placed over a shot of some foliage near Olmec and the Temple Gate.  The pendant logo splits, the title fades into the distance and the camera zooms out a bit before transitioning to Kirk standing in front of the Cannon Room with the two remaining teams.
?Welcome back to Legends!? he says. ?Now is the time when the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, so let?s talk to our two teams.? He turns the left side of the screen to talk to the Purple Parrots, starting with a brown-eyed boy with slightly wavy brown hair of average length. ?On the Purple Parrots, we have Geoff.  How old are you, Geoff??
?Fourteen.?
?And I understand you play a little football, but you really wanna join a rock band,? says Kirk, referring to the index card in his hand. ?Do you already play an instrument??
?Yeah,? answers Geoff. ?I?ve been playing drums since I was little? my dad used to be a drummer for a while, so I picked it up there.?
?Well hopefully you can find a band soon,? Kirk comments before moving to the left extreme of the screen to talk to the other Purple Parrot, a blue-eyed girl with auburn hair pulled back into a wavy ponytail. ?And also on the Purple Parrots, we have Andrea.  How old are you??
?Thirteen.?
?And it says here you?re on your school?s track and field team, but you also like painting,? Kirk reads.
?Yes, I?ve been painting for a couple years,? replies Andrea.
?What do you like to paint??
?Seascapes? winter scenes? the seasons.? She smiles.
?This is one artistic team,? says Kirk. ?Let?s hear it for the Purple Parrots!? The audience momentarily cheers for Geoff and Andrea, who clap along.  As the applause begins to subside, Kirk turns to his left to talk with the Silver Snakes, starting with a green-eyed boy with brown hair styled into spiky bangs just visible under the helmet. ?And on the Silver Snakes, we have Dalton.  How old are you??
?I?m fourteen,? says Dalton in response.
?And you play music too,? Kirk says. ?Tell me about that.?
?Well, I?ve been playing bass for six years, guitar for only two,? Dalton explains, ?but I?m probably gonna stick with the bass and singing.?
?Sounds awesome.  Maybe you guys should get together sometime,? Kirk remarks, gesturing to Geoff.  He then goes over to talk to Dalton?s partner, a freckled girl with straight, light brown hair and hazel eyes. ?And your partner here is Monica.  Tell me: How old are you??
?Fourteen.?
?And you?re good at science in school, you like swimming and rollerskating,? Kirk reads, ?but you also like reading about other cultures, right? Tell me about that.?
?I?m? really interested in Native American culture,? Monica explains shyly. ?Way back on my mom?s side, I?m a little bit Lakota? I don?t know how much, but I?ve been looking that up.?
?Ah, nice.  Sounds like a smart team we have here,? Kirk remarks, returning to center-screen. ?Let?s hear it for the Silver Snakes!? The audience gives Dalton and Monica a short round of applause; the players high-ten during the cheers.

"All right, now why don?t you guys go get ready for the first Temple Game," Kirk says while pointing offscreen somewhere to the left. "And girls, you can go get set up for the second Temple Game." Kirk then points off to the right; and the players follow his gestures: Geoff and Dalton disappear off the left side of the screen, Andrea and Monica off the right side. "In the Temple Games, each team is competing for?" he opens a pouch and pulls out a small gold medallion to show to the camera? "Pendants of Life.  The winning team will need those Pendants to protect them from the DREADED Temple Guards as they make their way through the Temple.  There are three Temple Games.  Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #1."

Olmec begins:
"Nefermesi made a long trip across the Sahara Desert alone, and on her way, she might have run into a mirage of a false route, causing her to get lost.  In this game, you will only need to cross this portion of the desert.  When Kirk gives the signal, choose one of the rocks in front of you and step out onto it.  If the rock sinks, it is only a mirage, and you must run back to the beginning and try again.
"The first player to make it to the other side? or the player that's further along at the end of 60 seconds? wins."
"The deserts looks just like this in Egypt, too," Kirk remarks. "Not.  Let's put 60 seconds on the clock!" A countdown clock appears in the bottom right of the screen, and Kirk runs off to the left to get out of the camera's way. "On your mark, get set, GO!"
Geoff and Dalton start off by going forward onto the first steps in front of them? in the closest row to the camera (C1) and the furthest row from the camera (F1) respectively? which work well for them at first, but the decision to stay straight only takes Dalton to the second step, and instead forces Geoff to restart after only the first step.  However, Dalton?s strategy of continuing straight ahead forces him to fall in the third row (at C3) and restart as well (:55).  At this point, the boys start to hesitate, but Geoff makes it to the second row by choosing the middle step (M2), which works as well as the furthest step (F2).  From there, the choice of M3 fails, forcing Geoff to go back again with 49 seconds remaining but showing Dalton that the only option is C3.  Yet, Dalton can only make it through three steps before falling again, this time at C4 with 46 seconds to go.
?Silver Snakes, Purple Parrots, both doing great so far!? Kirk remarks as Geoff begins following Dalton through several steps again.  This time, Dalton falls at M6, but Geoff continues on to F6 and puts the Purple Parrots in the lead (:35). ?Can the Purple Parrots get across, or will they have to start over again?? Geoff correctly chooses M7, but when he steps out to M8, it sinks, forcing him to restart but leaving him with a high score of seven steps.  In the meantime, a misstep by Dalton forces him to retry before even reaching the fifth row again; the score remains 7-5 Purple.
?How did Never-messy make it across?? The third quarter of the game consists largely of trial and error, but eventually Dalton makes it to the sixth row by choosing M4 and then C5 and C6, rather than F5 and F6 as Geoff had done.  However, he promptly sinks to the ground at C7, and has to go back with only fifteen seconds to go.  In an attempt to catch up to Geoff, Dalton skips the first step on his next attempt and promptly goes over to M2, but after a couple more steps, he is caught and has to retreat. ?Silver had to go back? could that cost ?em?? Neither player can progress from the furthest step they made it to before time runs out, at which point the countdown clock explodes and a pattern of ceiling spotlights flashes to indicate the end of the game.
?All right, that?s it? I mean, time?s up!? Kirk declares, running onscreen again and inviting the boys to walk over. ?It looks like the Silver Snakes made it through six steps, but the Purple Parrots made it through seven! The Purple Parrots win a half a Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds temporarily, during which Kirk and Geoff high-five. ?The Silver Snakes can catch up in the next game, it?s worth a half-Pendant.  Olmec, tell us about it.?

Olmec continues:
"Nefermesi spent a very long time in the Sahara, and the only source of water she had with her was the secret scroll with its hidden compartment.  In this game, you are going to retrieve some water.  Behind you is a very slippery slope, and at the top are three buckets full of water.  When Kirk gives the signal, climb up the slope on your knees until you reach the top.   Grab the rope to release one of the buckets, and then slide back down.  Then, do it again.
"The first player to dump all three buckets and slide back down? or the player that's further along after 60 seconds? wins."
"Our players've gotta make it rain here? Let's get started," comments Kirk as the girls get into position. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock." The countdown clock reappears in the bottom-right corner with a bang, and a purple half-Pendant appears in the upper-left corner of the screen as Kirk turns to do the narration. "On your mark, get set, GO!"
?There they go? on your knees! You gotta go on your knees!? Kirk declares as Andrea and Monica start the climb, using indents in the raised edges of the slopes for leverage.  Within about ten seconds, Andrea is about halfway up the slope, while Monica is close to the top.  However, Monica fails to pull down on the rope for one of the buckets, and slides partway down before realizing her mistake.  During this, Andrea closes the gap a little. ?Purple Parrots catching up, who?s gonna pull down the first bucket? Who?s gonna take the? Silver Snakes!? Monica manages to get back to the buckets with 44 seconds to go and properly dumps the leftmost bucket this time, then gets set to slide back down.  Andrea dumps her middle bucket with 41 seconds remaining and slides down after Monica. ?But the Purple Parrots just tied it up? this could be close!?
The girls start climbing up the slopes again, and it isn?t too long until they?re close to the buckets once more.  This time, Monica dumps the middle bucket with 26 seconds on the clock, and Andrea trails her by about five seconds. ?Just one more?!? Kirk remarks as the girls slide back down very quickly, creating big splashes when they reach the bottom, and start climbing up.  Surprisingly, the slick nature of the slopes doesn?t hinder the girls that much at that point, outside of a little slippage on by Monica? though not enough to really stop her.  She grabs onto the rope of the last bucket with nine seconds to go, and dumps it.  Two seconds later, she is back at the bottom with a splash.
?All right, that?s it! C?mon down, Andrea!? Kirk calls out as he steps onscreen again.  Andrea slides down the slope again and lands at the bottom with a huge splash.  Kirk tries to resist the urge to laugh while walking over. ?You, uh? Nice splash! The? The Purple Parrots got two of their buckets, but the Silver Snakes got all three before time ended, giving them the half-Pendant of Life!? The audience cheers for Monica for a few moments. ?So it?s all tied up, a half-Pendant apiece, and we go to the third and final game, it?s worth a full Pendant.  Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3.?

Olmec narrates:
"When Nefermesi and her brother and father were captured, the enemy chieftain bargained with her and promised to set her family free if she crossed the Sahara desert.  In this game, you will have to free your partner yourself.  When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will climb up the mountain using the rope.  When you get to one of the keys on the mountain, grab it, and continue up the mountain.  If you miss one of the four keys, you must go back to grab it.  Once you're at the top, use the correct key to unlock the cage and free your partner, then both of you must climb down the other side of the mountain.
"The first team to get both partners on the ground on the other side of the mountain? or the team that's further along after 90 seconds? wins."
The camera transitions over to Kirk. "This is for the Temple," he declares. "Let's put 60? I mean, 90 seconds on the clock?" The clock and Pendant count reappear onscreen? this time, the clock is set for 1:30, a purple half-Pendant is in the upper-left and a silver half-Pendant is in the upper-right.  Kirk moves around to the side of the mountain to do the commentary there. "On your mark, get set, GO!"
Andrea and Monica start to make their ways up the mountain, but it isn?t long before they encounter their first keys.  Andrea has a slightly easier time pocketing hers, and continues on with 1:23 on the clock.  Monica is only a couple seconds behind, however.  This remains the case as the two pocket their second keys at 1:15 and 1:13 respectively, and as they progress further up the mountain. ?This game?s?? Kirk struggles to explain. ?There?s a lot going on, you gotta? grab the keys, climb the mountain, free your partner? then your partner?s gotta run for it! Purple Parrots a little ahead, can they hold onto it?? The time gap between the two players, shockingly, remains the same even as they grab their third keys with 1:06 and 1:04 remaining respectively.   A few seconds later, both have climbed to the summit of the mountain, grabbed their fourth keys and made it to the cages their partners are in, although Monica has managed to catch up in this time.
?Okay, now they gotta find the right key to unlock their partners? that could stall ?em!? Kirk remarks as the girls reach into their pockets and pull out one of the keys.  Andrea and Monica each try the first keys on the cage doors around the same time, but Monica?s first key is incorrect whereas Andrea?s first choice is the right one.  She unlocks the door to Geoff?s cage with 54 seconds on the clock, and he steps out.  The two start to head for the other side of the mountain while Monica fiddles with the other keys, trying to select the right one. ?Now he?s gotta go down first and she has to go after him, but they just gotta make it down the other side? can the Silver Snakes catch up?? Monica?s second key turns out to be incorrect as well (0:46), stalling her even further.  It doesn?t matter much at that point, however, as Geoff has already set foot at the base of the mountain.  Andrea joins him only a few seconds later, touching the ground with 42 seconds on the clock.
?That?s it! Stop it right there!? Kirk declares, and the indicators disappear from the screen as he goes over to congratulate the Purple Parrots, during which, Monica can be seen still trying to unlock Dalton?s cage atop the mountain. ?Purple Parrots did a great job, made it up and over the mountain in a blast! They get the full Pendant, giving them a Pendant and a half, the Silver Snakes?? the camera pans up to the summit as Monica finally sets Dalton free? ?the Silver Snakes only had a half.  The Purple Parrots are goin? to the Temple!? Andrea lets out an excited yelp before high-fiving Geoff; the two eventually hug as the camera cuts to the Silver Snakes once more. ?Silver Snakes? It was a close match all the way through, it was great having you, and you?re not going away empty-handed.  Here?s what we got for you.? Dalton and Monica will each be receiving a copy of the Phantasy Star 0 Nintendo DS game.
The camera cuts back from the consolation prize to show only Kirk and the Purple Parrots in front of the back side of the mountain. ?The Purple Parrots fought tough, came out strong,? says Kirk, ?and now we?ll see if they can make it through Olmec?s Temple and retrieve the Water Scroll? right after this!? The camera zooms in on the African tribal mask just left of the Temple Guard door in the Room of the Ancient Masks.  The show?s logo reappears over this shot, and the camera then fades to black for commercial.

Rediscovery EP: The Secret Water Scroll of Nefermesi
« Reply #3 on: August 13, 2010, 06:23:02 PM »
When the camera fades in from commercial, the show?s title graphic is placed over a close-up of the statue head lying on the left shelf in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey.  The pendant logo splits, the title fades into the distance and the camera segues to Kirk standing in front of the Temple's stairs, with Geoff and Andrea at his side. "Welcome back to Legends!" he says to the camera. "The Purple Parrots have proven themselves worthy and now have earned the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  But first, Olmec's gonna give them some information to help them retrieve the Secret Water Scroll of Never-messy."
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You could start by running up to the Room of the Ancient Masks.  Push in the correct mask, and pass into the Pit of Despair.  There you must choose your next path.  You could race up into the Observatory, read the instructions on the far wall with the telescope and follow the instructions to open the door to the Central Dock.  Assemble the ship, and pass into the Den of Totem Poles.  Turn all the faces forward; that may take you below or lead you into the SHRIIIIIINE of the Siiiiiiilver Monkey! Assemble the statue, and you might be headed into the Pirate's Cove! Place the torch in the correct holder to go back, or spin the ship's wheel and enter the Graveyard of Ships.
"Stand on the correct grave to go upstairs? but beware the Temple Guard that might be haunting one of the graves! Or, plow through the wall and into the Viper's Nest.  Reach into the snake jars and find the key, and you'll enter the Bamboo Forest, where you can grab the Secret Water Scroll of Nefermesi.  If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Cannon Room.  Load the three cannonballs into the cannon, and if the correct door is unlocked, you can crawl back through the Pit and finally climb through the Cave, rrrrace down the STAIRS and back through the Temple Gate.  The choices are yours and yours ALONE!" Olmec pauses for a second. "You won 1 ? Pendants in the Temple Games.  Who's going first?"
"I am," answers Geoff.
"Very WELL, Geoff!" replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way towards the Water Scroll.  Hidden inside the Temple are three secret passages that may lead you into the Bamboo Forest, as well as Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms.  You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on BUT? if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple? and it'll be Andrea's turn to enter and try her luck.  Hidden somewhere inside the Temple is the other half of your Pendant.  If you can find it and you're carrying the other half, you will get an extra life.  If you reach the Water Scroll, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish.  Return through the gates with the Secret Water Scroll in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded? and here's how!"
?   For just getting into the Temple, they're both going to get a skateboard provided by Vans.
?   If they grab the Scroll in three minutes, they're both going to get an Xzibit Video Game Rocker, provided by Dreamseat.
?   And if they can get the Water Scroll out of the Temple before three minutes is up, they'll be going on a Caribbean cruise! Nickelodeon at Sea, aboard the Norwegian Epic, offers two pools and volleyball and basketball courts, day trips to different islands and meet and greets with your favorite Nick characters! Fun for the whole family! Nickelodeon at Sea, by Norwegian Cruise Line!

The camera cuts back from the grand prize to show Kirk, and the Purple Parrots one last time before the round begins. "Let's see if we can get the Purple Parrots on that cruise!" Kirk says as the camera cuts away from the grand prize and back to him and the team members.  He then turns to Andrea. "But Andrea, before we get started, tell us: How do you think you're gonna get to the Scroll?"
"Well, we're gonna start in the Cave," explains Andrea, "and then we're gonna go across to the Canyon? Cannon Room?" she pauses to hold back a laugh? "and then we're gonna go up, over into the Totem Poles and then climb down? and then hopefully the doors will open up and then we'll get out."
"All right, I hope that works out," Kirk says. "Geoff, get into position.  Put your mouthpieces in.  Olmec, will you lower your gate?"
Olmec groans gutturally as he lowers the gate; the faint orange lights under him are turned off.
"Set the clock for three minutes." The clock slams down in the bottom-right corner. "On your mark, get set, GO!"

Geoff races up the stairs and into the Temple, then promptly slides down into the Cave. ?There goes Geoff, running through the Ledges!? Kirk remarks as Geoff makes his way to the lower crawl tube and hits the actuator, opening the tube with 2:43 on the clock. ?They?ve got a Pendant-and-a-half? is that gonna be enough? He goes into the Pit of Despair?? Geoff makes his way across the foam-block-littered floor of the Pit, then tries the actuator for the Cannon Room door.  However, the door fails to open, and he heads back towards the crawl tube to reenter the Cave (2:34). ?That door didn?t open, so he?s gonna? wait, he?s going back to the Ledges! Maybe he?s got a plan, I dunno!? Once in the Cave again, Geoff climbs up to the upper crawl tube, and hits the actuator to open the passage.  It works, and he reappears on the side ledge of the Pit of Despair with 2:19 on the clock.
?He?s taking the high road? let?s see how that takes him!? comments Kirk as Geoff races across the closer-to-the-foreground of the two catwalks connecting the side ledges of the Pit.  He hits the actuator for the Central Dock, opening the passage connecting the two rooms, and crawls through with 2:07 remaining. ?He?s gotta put the ship together!? Geoff goes to the back of the room, grabs one mast and the crow?s nest and brings them back up to the front of the room to place them in the ship.  He finishes this part with 1:55 to go, then goes back for the other mast and places it in the other hole in the ship, completing it with 1:47 on the clock.  With a flash, the curtain in the back of the room shoots up, revealing the ladder to the Observatory, but the door into the Den of Totem Poles also opens, and Geoff goes on in that direction.
?He?s into the Room of the Totem Poles!? Kirk remarks as Geoff walks over to the stage-left totem pole and kneels down in front of it (1:40). ?He?s gotta? turn the totem poles? their faces around!? Starting at the bottom, he works his way up the totem pole, turning each of the three faces on it so that they are pointed out towards the audience.  The first pole is completed with 1:29 on the clock, and he walks back over to the other totem pole. ?He?s got one, now he?s gotta get the other one!? Geoff turns a couple of the faces too far at first, forcing him to carefully turn them back to the proper position. ?He?s right above the Bamboo Forest! Can he get the Scroll?? With 1:17 remaining, the second totem pole is completed.  Geoff goes over to the ladder leading downward, but the door isn?t open.  Instead, he goes into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (1:13).  He goes directly to the back shelves in the room, but before he can grab the base, something emerges from the door in the back of the room?
?TEMPLE GUARD!? shouts Kirk, while Geoff looks a bit startled. ?Give ?em the Pendant, you can go on!? Geoff snaps out of it and hands over his Pendant of Life, and then takes the base of the statue to the front pedestal as the Temple Guard disappears (1:07).  He properly positions the base with very little trouble, then goes back for the torso with a minute to go. ?Got a minute left! C?mon, Geoff!? He brings the torso and the head back to the platform in one sweep, and spends a couple seconds turning the torso.  He gets it in position with 50 seconds left, then threads the rod attached to the head into the holes in the other parts of the statue, and jams the head into the platform with 45 seconds remaining.  All the doors leading out of the room open, and Geoff goes to the back of the room and starts to climb down the ladder into the Viper?s Nest.
?He?s just one room away from the Secret Scroll!? Kirk remarks as Geoff makes his way down into the Viper?s Nest with forty seconds to go.
?C?mon Geoff!? calls Andrea from the sidelines. ?C?mon, you can do it!?
?He?s gotta pull one of the snakes to find the right key!? As soon as Geoff enters the Viper?s Nest (0:38), he goes over to the altar in the front of the room, takes the lid off the middle jar and grabs the key inside, which he then presses on the key panel for the closer door on the right wall of the room.  The door opens, and Geoff crawls through into the Bamboo Forest with 28 seconds on the clock. ?He?s in the room! Get the Scroll!? Geoff climbs through a large opening in the first of the three screen-like webs of bamboo shoots, then makes his way to the front of the room.  He grabs the Water Scroll with 22 seconds left and takes off.
?HE?S GOT IT!? Kirk shouts as Geoff starts to squeeze his way through a nearby opening in the second mass of bamboo poles. ?All the doors are open! Twenty seconds!? Geoff finds a larger opening in the final tangle and approaches the stage-right door in the Bamboo Forest with fifteen seconds left.  He hoists himself up into the tunnel and scrambles into the Cannon Room with eleven seconds left. ?He?s gotta move! Can he do it? Ten seconds!? Geoff runs through into the Pit of Despair, emerging from the connective passageway just before the clock reaches 0:07. ?Ough? He?s almost out, but they got the game chairs!? He heads up the lower crawl tube from the Pit of Despair into the Cave with two seconds left, but time runs out just as he exits the tube.
?Oh, time?s up!? Kirk laments, his hand on an upset-looking Andrea?s shoulder. ?He got caught in the Ledges? the Cave and the Ledges? but they both did a great effort, they were a great team all day? Here comes Geoff now!? The camera  focuses on Geoff reappearing through the Temple Gate to meet Kirk and Andrea. ?Here he is with the Water Scroll.  They get the skateboards and the game chairs, and they get to keep their confidence.  But we gotta get outta here? I wish I could stay all day, but we gotta go.  Check us out next time for more adventure and another great Legend of the Hidden Temple!? The three wave to the camera; Andrea fights back a frown as they converse, and the camera also shows the Bamboo Forest and the Den of Totem Poles, along with various shots of the audience and of Kirk showing the crowd the Secret Water Scroll, as the credits roll.

Yay, 100 episodes! This was actually one of the standouts of the season, with very creative challenges all around.  The Moat... Well, after the previous episode, I didn't expect the teams to have a harder time here, but the first four teams to cross all required about a minute this time.  The Steps of Knowledge made up for it with a very interesting legend and solid competition which carried into the Temple Games.

The Temple Games were exciting to watch for the most part, although the Silver Snakes did shoot themselves in the foot early on.  In the first game, which was the "correct path" game, the Silver Snake, Dalton, tried to cheat by skipping the first step in the last seconds, but was caught and sent back, allowing Geoff of the Purple Parrots to closely beat him out.  The Snakes came back in the second game, but the Purple Parrots won the "caged on the mountain" game on a combination of speed and luck? unlocking the cage on the first try gave them a decisive victory and the right to a Temple Run.  If the Snakes hadn't tried to cheat, though, it could've been a close one-Pendant tie.

The Temple Run came down to Geoff and Geoff alone, but contrary to the diagram, this was not a win.  He had a good concept of what to do in each room and was lucky to only encounter one Temple Guard, but ultimately it was a relative lack of speed that cost him and Andrea the cruise.  He also made very unusual choices at some parts, the most noticeable occuring near the start of the run? after taking the low road into the Pit of Despair only to find the Cannon Room door locked, he backtracked to the Cave and used the upper crawl tube to access the catwalks, rather than trying to climb the Pit walls.  Perhaps this would've saved him enough time to escape, but you never know...  Either way, time ran out on the team just as Geoff was entering the Cave, making it one of the closest failed escapes to occur in The Rediscovery.

Trivia and Records:
This is only the third solo loss in The Rediscovery's history, the first two being "The Feathered Headdress of Powhatan" (Season 1, Layout II) and "The Melted Lamp of Paul Revere" (Season 2, Layout V)? as such, this episode is also the second solo failed escape, and the second Purple Parrots solo loss.  Geoff was the only player to ever make his unusual retreat from the Pit when one door didn't work, but the other ones were accessible without backtracking.  This is also the first Rediscovery episode to feature a completely made-up legend, figure and artifact.

The episode also had several things in common with "The Original Robe of Emerald Buddha," the episode immediately before it.  Both involved the "correct path" Moat and a Purple-Silver faceoff in the Temple Games, and both episodes' Temple Runs featured an artifact in the Bamboo Forest and resulted in a failed escape.
