Rediscovery EP: The Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa

Author's Note: This is one of the episodes of my independent project, Legends: The Rediscovery.  More information on the project can be found by following this link.

Episode 94px]

The camera swerves through a thick rainforest, and after multiple turns, it eventually stops in front of an ancient temple.  The eyes of giant stone head next to the temple gate light up red as he begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE!"
The show's logo forms as two halves of a Pendant of Life come in from the sides of the screen and merge; the show's name appears above the logo as the camera pans across the entire temple.
"With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk emerges from a thick patch of jungle plants and shrubs, then runs into the foreground and up a wide set of steps to greet the crowd. "Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple.  The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures of his temple.  Which one are we gonna hear about today?"

Faint orange lights underneath Olmec turn on, and the camera cuts to a close-up of him as he replies:
"The Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa."

"Oh, the Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa!" Kirk says in response as the camera cuts back to him, "Well, the legend is set, and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa.  Will it be:
"Billy and Katherine of the Red Jaguars?" the camera pans to each team in order, their first names briefly appearing at the bottom of the screen?
"Nathan and Michaela of the Blue Barracudas,
"James and Crystal of the Green Monkeys,
"Jake and Hannah of the Orange Iguanas,
"Nick and Alexis of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Joe and Emily of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," says Kirk, "but in the end, only one team will have the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  But first, they?ll have to cross the Moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today?
"In front of each team, there's a balance beam that goes across the Moat.  When I say 'Go,' one player from each team will start to walk out and try to make their way to the other side, but if they fall in, they gotta go back and start it over again."
"As soon as the second player jumps down onto the deck, it's his job to run over here and hit the gong." He hits the top button on the Red Jaguars' gong? which lights up red? to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will be going into the next round! Are we ready, teams?"
"YEAH!" The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"I thought you'd never ask," Olmec replies.
"All right!" Kirk says in response. "On your marks, get set, GO!"

The first players on each team start of fairly slowly; even so, the girl on the Blue Barracudas quickly loses her balance and falls into the water after only about ten seconds.  By the team she gets back on track, the first players on the other teams are close to the finish. ?This is tough to do, it?s hard to keep your balance, but our players got it!? Kirk mentions as the boy on the Green Monkeys makes it to the other side first, twenty seconds into the round.  However, the male Purple Parrot falls into the Moat at about the same time and has to restart; immediately after, the Red Jaguar lands on the far side of the Moat.
?Green Monkeys doing great, they?re hangin? in tough!? Kirk remarks as the second players on each team inch towards the other end of the Moat. ?Are they gonna be first? We?ll see!? In fact, the girl on the Green Monkeys is the first to make it across, and she runs over to hit her team?s gong forty-one seconds after the challenge began. ?We got our first team, here come the others! Who?s it gonna be?? Seven seconds later, the Red Jaguars bang down on their gong. ?We got? Red Jaguars made it, need two more teams!? A little more time passes, during which the male Purple Parrot finally reaches the other side, enabling his partner to begin to cross.  Fifty-seven seconds into the round, the male Silver Snake makes it across and hit his team?s gong. ?We?re looking for one more team? and it?s the Orange Iguanas!? The female Orange Iguana hits her team?s gong a total sixty-six seconds after the round began.
?That?s it! We got our four teams!? Kirk declares as the camera cuts to him celebrating with the Red Jaguars around their gong. ?Red Jaguars blazed across the Moat? they were strong, they pulled it out.  Going on to the Steps of Knowledge are the roarin? Red Jaguars?? Kirk holds for applause as the camera briefly shows each of the qualifying teams? ?and the Green Monkeys? and the Orange Iguanas? and the Silver Snakes! The Blue Barracudas and the Purple Parrots gave it a great effort.  We got a great gift for them and here?s what it is.? Nathan, Nick, Alexis and Michaela will each be receiving a copy of Planet 51 on DVD.

Rediscovery EP: The Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa
« Reply #1 on: July 23, 2010, 05:07:41 PM »
When the camera cuts away from the consolation prize, Kirk and the four remaining teams are at the top of the Steps of Knowledge. "As the quest continues, and it's time for Olmec to tell us about the Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa.  But pay attention, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you a step closer to the Temple."
Olmec begins to tell the legend:

"In the 1700s, one of the strongest rulers in Europe was Maria Theresa, the Habsburg Empress.  From Sch?nbrunn Palace in Vienna, she ruled over Austria, Hungary and many other territories in central and eastern Europe.  She loved theatre and the arts, and as empress, she outlawed capital punishment and torture and reformed the educational system, and her thirteen children grew up to control much of the continent.  But as a woman, it wasn't easy for Maria Theresa to earn her place at the throne.
"Women were not allowed to rule by themselves, and Maria's father, Charles VI, had no sons, only daughters.  So he wrote the Pragmatic Sanction which made Maria the Habsburg heiress, but when Charles died and Maria became empress, war broke out.  Frederick II, King of Prussia and a military genius, despised Maria and felt she would only waste the Habsburg lands, but Maria was not pleased.
" 'Frederick, you agreed to zis chust as ze rest of Chermany did! I am ze empress and you von't oversrow me! Men, attack!'
"They marched on to Dresden, and legend has it Maria Theresa was at the forefront, commanding the troops herself.  She and her soldiers fought bravely, and after a close battle, when the dust cleared, there stood Maria with her sword pointed at Frederick's neck.  Days later, Prussia and Austria made peace and allowed Maria Theresa to remain empress, as long as she surrendered a small parcel of her empire to Frederick.  In exchange, she was given a cache of jewels, including a pair of large emerald earrings, which later made their way to the Temple.  Your quest is to find the Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa and bring them back here."

"Thanks Olmec," Kirk replies once Olmec finishes telling the legend, "so where are the Emerald Earrings?"
Olmec answers:
"The Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa can be found in the Cannon Room." The camera zooms in on two linked earrings hanging from the ladder leading up from the Cannon Room, then fades back to Kirk.

"All right.  Teams," Kirk begins, "in a moment, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're right, you're gonna move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance." Kirk starts walking down the steps at this point, then turns around to face the teams. "The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Olmec, we?re now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
?Which of these royal houses did Maria Theresa belong to: Hohenzollern, Hanover or Habsburg??
Emily hesitantly rings in: ?Um? Habz-burg???
?Correct,? answers Olmec.
?Nice answer, Silver Snakes, step down!? Kirk calls out encouragingly, and the Silver Snakes move down to the second step. ?Next question.?

Olmec asks:
?At first, Maria Theresa?s reign as empress was not well accepted.  Was this because???
Emily stomps in much earlier this time: ?She? she was a woman and she couldn?t rule on her own ?cause she was a woman.?
There is a pause.
?That is COMPLETELY correct.?
?It was a mouthful,? Kirk remarks as the Silver Snakes move down to the third step, ?and just like that, the Silver Snakes are now one step away from the Temple Games! We need two teams.  Next question, Olmec!?

Olmec now asks:
?Which of these decrees was issued so that she could inherit the throne: The Ninety-five Theses, The Pragmatic Sanction or The Magna Carta??
After a moment, Jake buzzes in: ?The... um, the Pragmatic Sanction???
?Correct,? replies Olmec.
?Orange Iguanas, step down!? Kirk calls, and the Orange Iguanas move down to the second step. ?They?re on the board! Next question, Olmec.?

Olmec follows up with:
?In the War of the Austrian Succession, which of these rulers directly opposed her: Henry VIII, Philip II or Frederick II??
James hits the marking first: ?Philip II.?
?Incorrect,? Olmec replies, and the female Green Monkey crosses her arms.
Nobody else tries to ring in, and after a few seconds, a bell sounds. ?Time?s up! The correct answer was: Frederick II.?
?All right, tough question,? comments Kirk, ?but let?s keep going.  Olmec, continue.?

Olmec does so by asking:
?Maria ruled over the Habsburg Empire from her capital in which of these cities: Vienna, Prague or Budapest??
As Olmec is reading the third choice, Emily cuts him off: ?Vienna???
?That is correct!? shouts Olmec in response, and the Silver Snakes hop down onto the bottom step.
?We got our first team, it?s the Silver Snakes!? declares Kirk as the Silver Snakes start celebrating on the bottom step by high-fiving and jumping up and down. ?We?re still looking for one more team, it?s anybody?s game.  Olmec, next question.?

Olmec asks:
?After the war, the territory which Maria Theresa surrendered to Frederick was known as Silesia.  Is this part of what is now: Serbia, Lithuania or Poland??
James stomps down and guesses: ?Poland.?
?Correct,? replies Olmec.
?Green Monkeys now on the board!? Kirk announces as the Green Monkeys move onto the second step. ?Red Jaguars can catch up.  Next question, Olmec.?

Olmec continues:
?How many children did Maria have: Seven, Twelve or Thirteen??
Jake buzzes in: ?Thirteen???
?That is correct.?
?Orange Iguanas are now just one step away from the Temple Games!? Kirk narrates as the Orange Iguanas set foot on the penultimate level. ?Still plenty of time for the other teams.  Let?s keep going.?

Olmec then asks:
?One of Maria?s children would later become Queen of France.  Was she: Jos?phine Bonaparte, Marie Antoinette or Catherine the Great??
Billy hits the marking first: ?Jos?phine Bonaparte???
?Incorrect.?
James rings in: ?Marie Antoinette.?
?That is correct,? Olmec answers.
?It?s all tied up on the second-to-last step!? explains Kirk as the Green Monkeys join the Orange Iguanas on the third level. ?Next question, Olmec.?

Olmec asks:
?In Maria Theresa?s time, the center of the Habsburg Empire was Austria.  After her reign, which of these countries did Austria temporarily merge with: Germany, Switzerland or Hungary??
Billy stomps down and answers: ?Germany.?
?Incorrect.?
Jake gongs in: ?Hungary???
?THAT IS CORRECT!? bellows Olmec, and the Orange Iguanas walk around the Silver Snakes to get to the bottommost step.  However, before the teams start celebrating with each other, Kirk runs in front of the camera showing the steps and then up the bottom step between the two teams.
?We got our two teams for the Temple Games!? Kirk says as he turns around to face the camera and the team players start celebrating, ?The Orange Iguanas and the Silver Snakes! Red Jaguars, Green Monkeys, c?mon down here.? The Red Jaguars walk down two levels to join Kirk and the Green Monkeys. ?These teams gave it a great effort too, it was a close match and they?re not going away empty-handed.  We got a gift for ?em both and here?s what it is.?
Dee reads the consolation prize:
?Look at the entertaining fun you?ll have when you strap on Moon Shoes! Super excitement is yours when you bounce higher than ever! Don?t leave earth without Moon Shoes, from Big Time Toys!?
The camera then cuts away from the consolation prize and back to the Steps of Knowledge, on which only the Silver Snakes, Orange Iguanas and Kirk are still standing. ?These two teams will be playing for the right to enter Olmec?s Temple,? announces Kirk, ?and they?re gonna do it right after this!? The camera zooms in on the stage-left totem pole in the Den of Totem Poles, then the show?s logo reforms and the camera fades to black for the commercial.

Rediscovery EP: The Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa
« Reply #2 on: July 23, 2010, 05:15:24 PM »
When the camera fades in from commercial, the show?s titlecard is placed over a shot of the Saturn model on the right altar in the Observatory.  The pendant logo splits, the title fades into the distance and the camera segues over to Kirk standing in front of the Pit of Despair with the last two teams.
?Welcome back to Legends!? he says. ?Now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest? so let?s hear it for Joe and Emily of the Silver Snakes!? The audience briefly applauds for the skinny brown-haired boy with freckles and brown eyes, and the curly-brown-haired girl with blue eyes and glasses. ?And Jake and Hannah of the Orange Iguanas!? The boy with short dark hair and brown eyes and the black girl with her hair tied into many little braids high-five as the audience cheers for them.
"All right, why don?t you go get set up for the Temple Games," Kirk says, pointing in different directions; the players walk offscreen as Kirk faces the camera again. "In the Temple Games, each team is competing to win?" he opens a pouch and pulls out a small gold medallion to show to the camera? " Pendants of Life.  The winning team is gonna need those Pendants to protect them from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through the Temple.  There are three Temple Games, and Olmec will tell us about Temple Game #1."

Olmec begins:
"The Habsburg Empire stretched across most of Europe, and many of the other countries envied Maria Theresa for having so much control, so it was difficult to pass from one side of the empire to the other without meeting aggressors.  In this game, you will see just how hard that is.  When Kirk gives the signal, choose a platform and step out onto it.  If the platform sinks, you have been captured by an enemy country, and you must run back and then try again.
"The first player to make it to the other side of the Habsburg Empire without getting caught? or the player that's further along at the end of 60 seconds? wins."
The camera fades over to Kirk standing in front of the equipment. "They got a continent to cross, so let's get started," he says. "Let's set the clock for 60 seconds." A countdown clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and Kirk dashes offscreen to the left to do the commentary without being in the camera frame. "On your mark, get set, GO!"
Jake and Emily both step out onto the first platforms, but interestingly, they both choose the middle platform in the second row at the same time.  Both fall and have to go back and start again. ?They both slip and fall, but it?s tough to choose the right ones and remember where you went!? Emily makes it back to the platform first and is the first to make it through two correct steps, a split second before Jake.  She then makes it to the fourth step with Jake right behind her, but when she slows down and starts hesitating, Jake tries to see if an alternate path exists so he pass her? and falls on an incorrect platform, and has to start over with 49 seconds on the clock.  However, Emily also falls a moment later, thanks to an incorrect choice for the sixth step.  But Jake gets to retry sooner, and makes it to the fourth step with 42 seconds left. ?Orange Iguanas in the lead now, how far can that take ?im?? He gets to the sixth step with Emily right behind, but falls when the closest-to-the-foreground step on the seventh row turns out to be wrong (:38).  Emily also chooses wrong a moment later, though.
?They gotta be careful and remember where they went already!? Kirk comments as the players fall earlier multiple times.  Finally, with about eighteen seconds left, Jake makes it through seven correct steps, with Emily hot on his tail, but a bad step on his part allows Emily to reach the eighth correct step and reclaim the lead (:13!), and even make it to the ninth step. ?Just one more! Can she? Ohh! She has to go back!? Kirk shouts out as Emily chooses the closest-to-the-foreground step in the final row and is forced to restart with but six seconds to go.  When time inevitably runs out, a pattern of ceiling spotlights flashes and the countdown clock disappears, and Kirk runs over to announce the winner.
?Okay, time?s up!? he calls out, gesturing for Jake and Emily to walk over. ?It looks like the Orange Iguanas made it through seven steps, but the Silver Snakes made it to the last one, giving them the half-Pendant of Life!? The audience briefly applauds for Emily before Kirk continues. ?Orange Iguanas can catch up in the next game, it?s worth a half-Pendant.  Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2.?

Olmec continues:
"Maria Theresa gave birth to thirteen princes and princesses, and they grew up to control much of Europe.  Hanging from the net above you are the crowns for four of her children.  When Kirk gives the signal, jump up and untie one of the crowns hanging from the net.  Once it falls, come down and place it on one of the four heads.  Then, jump back up and do it again.
"The first player to crown four of Maria Theresa's children? or the player that's further along at the end of 60 seconds? wins."
The camera segues over to Kirk in front of the players and the equipment for this game. "If they did all thirteen, it'd take too long," he says with a grin. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock?" A countdown clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen, a silver half-Pendant in the upper-left.  Kirk then gets out of the camera frame and continues. "On your mark, get set, GO!"
Joe and Hannah jump up and try to grab the first crowns, but it takes a while to untie the ropes connecting the crowns to the rungs of the nets.  However, the players have relatively little trouble actually reaching the crowns? Joe grabs one with 55 seconds to go, Hannah with 52 on the clock.  Joe finally unties his crown with fifty seconds on the clock and heads back down to grab it and place it on one of the mannequin heads at his feet. ?They gotta hold on and untie the thing fast or? ohh! Orange Iguanas lost their crown!? Hannah loses grip on the crown with 47 seconds remaining, before she could completely undo the knot.  Just as she starts to descend to the floor to retry, Joe jumps up to reach for the second crown. ?That might cost her? Let?s see!? Joe unties the second crown from the ceiling with 36 seconds on the clock, and lets go of the net so he can let the bungee cord bring him back down to the floor.  In the meantime, Hannah starts trying to untie the first crown from the net once again.
?Orange Iguanas got their first crown, now they gotta put it on the head!? Kirk comments as Hannah descends after the crown she just untied at the :31 mark.  Not too long after, though, Joe unties his third crown from the net, enabling it to fall to the floor.  Hannah?s second crown falls to the ground with a clang at :22 and she, too, descends after it. ?Orange Iguanas catching up, but will the Silver Snakes stay in the lead?? Kirk asks with thirteen seconds left as the players approach the nets one more time.  They each untie one more crown and place it on another mannequin head with a few seconds left, but for Hannah, this is the third crown whereas for Joe, it is the fourth and last one.  The clock and half-Pendant disappear and Kirk runs back onscreen to declare the winner.
?That?s it!? he announces. ?Joe? the Silver Snakes got all four of their crowns before time ended.  They get another half-Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds as Kirk and Joe high-five. ?So the Silver Snakes have a Pendant, the Orange Iguanas don?t have any yet, but this next game is worth a whole Pendant.  Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3.?

Olmec narrates:
"The War of the Austrian Succession occurred because Frederick II refused to acknowledge Maria Theresa as empress of the Habsburg lands.  Before you are four of the Prussian soldiers that serve Frederick.  When Kirk gives the signal, load your slingshot and fire a cannonball at one of the soldiers sitting on the wall.  Then it's your partner's turn.
"The first team to knock down all four of the Prussian soldiers? or the team that knocks over the most soldiers in 60 seconds? wins."
"Orange Iguanas need this to tie," explains Kirk as the camera transitions over to him, standing in the middle of all the equipment for the third game. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock?" The countdown clock appears onscreen with a bang, and a silver Pendant of Life appears in the upper-left corner before Kirk dashes off to the right side to avoid being hit by a cannonball during the commentary. "On your marks, get set, SHOOT!"
?There they go, bombs away!? Kirk remarks as the boys on each team take a shot at the targets on the wall; they fail to score on their first attempt and allow the girls their turn, but Joe and Jake each knock down the first target with about 52 seconds on the clock.  This repeats itself around :44, when they each knock down their rightmost target. ?Both teams moving fast! This could be over fast, folks!? The girls have a relatively hard time trying to knock down the targets, however; neither can seem to get a hang of the slingshot. ?It?s pretty even so far??
The next score is made at the halfway mark, by Hannah? a lucky shot leaves the Orange Iguanas with only their leftmost target.  Moments later, however, Joe scores again for the Silver Snakes, once again tying things up. ?Next team to score wins! This is exciting!? Hannah launches another ball at the last target with 23 seconds to go, knocking it back? but not hard enough for it to fall over. ?Ohh! I thought she had it! But will the Silver Snakes come back?? With sixteen seconds on the clock, Emily fires a ball at the last target for the Snakes; the target falls over.  The countdown clock and Pendant of Life subsequently disappear from the screen.
?That?s it! Great job by both teams!? Kirk announces as he runs onscreen, summoning the players. ?But the Silver Snakes got down all of their targets first? they get the full Pendant, giving them two? the Orange Iguanas didn?t have any.  Silver Snakes are going to the Temple!? Emily jumps up and down and high-tens Joe while doing so, while Kirk goes over to talk to the Orange Iguanas. ?Orange Iguanas, you guys gave it a great effort too? it was so close, but you came up a little bit short.  But we got a great gift for you and here?s what it is.? Jake and Hannah will each be receiving a copy of the New Super Mario Bros. Wii game.
When the camera cuts back from the Orange Iguanas? consolation prize, only the Silver Snakes and Kirk are standing between a slingshot and wall used in the third Temple Game. ?We?ll see if Joe and Emily can make it through Olmec?s Temple, retrieve the Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa,? he says, ?right after this!? The camera zooms in on the Earrings clipped to a rung of the Cannon Room ladder before the show?s logo appears and the camera fades out to commercial.

Rediscovery EP: The Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa
« Reply #3 on: July 23, 2010, 05:23:18 PM »
When the camera returns from the second commercial break, the show's logo is partially covering a shot of a lit-up Silver Snakes gong at the far side of the Moat.  The Pendant of Life splits, the title fades into the distance and the camera segues to Kirk standing in front of the Temple's stairs, to the camera-right of the Silver Snakes. "Welcome back to Legends!" he says to the camera. "Jazz and Emily have proven themselves worthy and earned the right to enter the Temple.  But first, Olmec's gonna give them some information to help them retrieve the Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa."
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You could start by running up to the Room of the Ancient Masks.  Push in the correct mask, and pass into the Pit of Despair.  There, you could race up into the Observatory, read the instructions on the far wall with the telescope and follow the instructions to open the door to the Central Dock.  Assemble the ship, and pass into the Den of Totem Poles.  Turn all the faces forward; that may take you below or lead you into the SHRIIIIIIIINE of the Siiiiiiilver Monkey! Assemble the statue, and you may be headed toward the Pirate's Cove! Place the torch in the correct holder to go back, or spin the ship's wheel and enter? the Graveyard of Ships.
"Stand on the correct grave to go upstairs? but beware the Temple Guard that might be haunting one of the graves! Or, plow through the wall and into the Viper's Nest.  Reach into the snake jars and find the key, and you'll enter the Bamboo Forest! If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Cannon Room, where you can grab the Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa.  Then, pass through the Pit and finally climb through the Cave, rrrrace down the STAIRS and back through the Temple Gate.  The choices are yours and yours ALONE!" Olmec pauses for a second. "You won 2 Pendants in the Temple Games.  Who's going first?"
"I am!" calls Emily, raising her hand in the air.
"Very well, Emily!" replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way towards the Emerald Earrings.  Hidden inside the Temple are three secret passages that may lead you into the Bamboo Forest, as well as Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms.  You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on BUT? if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple? and it'll be Jazz's turn to enter and try his luck.  If you reach the Earrings, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards? will vanish.  Return through the gates with the Emerald Earrings in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded? and here's how!"
?   For just getting into the Temple, they're both going to get a Schwinn Mesa mountain bike.
?   If they can grab the Earrings in three minutes, they're also going to get an Xzibit Video Game Rocker, provided by Dreamseat.
?   And if they can get the Earrings out of the Temple before three minutes is up, they'll both be going to the Bahamas! The Bahamas Princess Resort, on exciting Grand Bahama Island, offering tennis, swimming and international entertainment.  Fun for the whole family, from Bahamas Princess Resort!

"The Bahamas! Sounds great!" Kirk says before turning to Joe. "So Jazz, tell us: What's your strategy?"
"Um, we're just gonna? go down into the Cave," she says, gesturing to the rooms as she speaks, "then we're gonna see if hopefully all the doors will open, or we're gonna go up and try going down somewhere else."
"Let's see if that gets you guys to the Earrings and the Bahamas," Kirk says with a smile before turning to Emily. "All right, Emily, get into position.  Put your mouthpieces in.  And let's set the clock for three minutes." The clock appears onscreen. "Olmec, lower your gate, please!"
Olmec groans gutturally as he lowers the gate; the faint orange lights under him are turned off.
"On your mark, get set, GO!"

Emily runs up the stairs and into the Temple, then slides down into the Cave. ?There goes Emily! Down into the Cave of Sighs, with two Pendants!? Emily makes her way through the ledges of the Cave without too much difficulty.  She goes down towards the lower crawl tube leading to the Pit of Despair and hits the actuator, but the door does not open (2:47).  She then starts to climb back up towards the upper crawl tube and again tries the actuator, but once again, the door fails to open (2:40).  Finally, she climbs up to the door leading directly up, which does open. ?She?s tried everything, but she?s gotta go up into the Room of the? uh, the Room of the Ancient Masks!? Emily pulls herself up and into the Room of the Ancient Masks with 2:31 on the clock, but something emerges from the door in the back of the room?
?TEMPLE GUARD!? Kirk exclaims as the guard makes his way over to a frightened Emily. ?She?s gotta give him the Pendant?!? Emily stands there, frozen, for a few seconds before handing over her Pendant of Life to the Temple Guard with 2:22 on the clock.  The guard then disappears behind the door again. ?Now she?s gotta push the masks to open a door!? Emily pushes in the masks stage-left of the Temple Guard door, and it opens the door to the Pit of Despair.  Emily then goes down the staircase and into the Pit with 2:16 remaining. ?Is she gonna go across or go down and try the Cannon Room?? Emily carefully walks across the closer-to-the-front plank connecting the two side ledges of the Pit, trying to avoid falling in.
?Oh, she?s not gonna try the door, she?s got a plan! Looks like she?s heading into the Dock Room?? Emily hits the actuator for the Central Dock door, and heads into the room with 2:04 to go.  Once there, she looks around for a moment before going to the back of the room to grab the two masts for the ship located in front of the ladder leading downward (1:56).  She then goes back for the crow?s nest and places it on the stage-right mast with 1:50 to go; with a quick flash, the sheet-door in the back of the room shoots upward, revealing both the ladder leading up from the room and the second Temple Guard!
?Oh, Temple Guard! Go Jazz!? Kirk shouts, sending Joe into the Temple. ?He likes Transformers, they call him ?Jazz,? he?s fast!? Joe slides down into the Cave with 1:39 remaining, and from there, he precisely follows Emily?s path up to the Central Dock (1:16).  From there, he climbs up into the Observatory and gets to work with the telescope in the room, using the knobs on the sides to focus the lens properly. ?He?s gotta line up the telescope and read the writing on the wall, that?ll tell him how to open the door!? The camera cuts to a shot of the writing on the wall? ?Spin Saturn and Venus?? before cutting back to Joe taking his eye off the telescope. ?Got less than a minute left?!? Joe goes to the front of the room and spins the Jupiter and Saturn models on the stage-right altar in the room; the door does not open. ?Is the door gonna open? He might?ve done something wrong?? Joe then spins the models of Venus and Mercury on the other altar, causing the door leading into the Den of Totem Poles to open with 51 seconds on the clock.
?He?s moving on, into the? the room where he?s gonna turn the totem poles to go on!? Kirk remarks as Joe gets started with the stage-right totem pole in the room with 44 seconds left.  He works from the top down, meaning that each time he turns a face towards the fourth wall, he has to rotate it again as he starts aligning the face directly beneath it.  Joe spends a while getting the top and middle face on the first pole to align with the bottom one, and completes the first totem pole with 26 seconds remaining.  He then gets to work on the other totem pole, using the same technique. ?I don?t know if he?s gonna make it?!? With just a few seconds left, Joe completes the second totem pole; the audience is counting down as he heads into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey with six seconds to go.  He goes into the back of the room for the base of the statue, but out jumps the third?
?TEMPLE GUARD!? exclaims Kirk. ?Give ?em the Pendant and hurry!? As the last seconds disappear from the clock, Joe hands over his Pendant of Life; he goes back to grab the base of the silver monkey, but time expires just as he touches the piece.
?Oh, time is up!? Kirk laments, Emily by his side. ?They both gave it a great effort, they did a great job, but they were a couple of rooms away! They still get the mountain bikes, and we gotta get outta here.  Join us again next time for another great Legend of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!? The camera shows rooms such as the Den of Totem Poles and the Observatory, and a first-person walk across one of the planks in the Pit of Despair, as the credits roll.

Rediscovery EP: The Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa

Episode Summary
Episode 94px]

Name of Artifact: The Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa
Season: 3
Layout: 2 (12 overall)
Result: Failed acquisition
Team: Silver Snakes
Pendants Won: 2
Location of Artifact: The Cannon Room

The Silver Snakes were a very solid team through the elimination rounds, especially in the Temple Games, where they bested the Orange Iguanas 2-0.  Taking all this into account, it's horrible that they couldn't keep up the good work in the Temple Run.  There was no excuse for the team not making it at least to the bottom floor; Emily was taken out after only a few rooms and the players didn't have to climb out of the Pit of Despair like the team from "Demetrius Ypsilanti and the Dame's Diamond Necklace," earlier in the same layout, did.  However, inexcusable difficulties and hesitancies in multiple rooms prevented it from happening.  Time ran out just before Joe could get started putting the monkey together, but I stand by what I said: The team should've at least progressed to the bottom floor.

Trivia and Records:
Episodes 92 to 94 mark the second time in The Rediscovery's history that the same team made it to the Temple three times in a row, as according to the airing order? the first instance was Episodes 47 to 49 in Season 2, which were all Orange Iguanas runs.  Joe was nicknamed "Jazz" throughout the Temple Run portion of the show; the player interviews were cut, but Kirk explained that, like Damian from "Rutherford's Gold Foil" (Season 2, Layout VIII), Joe is a big fan of Transformers and got his nickname from one of the characters.  Joe is the only player to work from the top down in the Den of Totem Poles; this strategy forced him to keep readjusting the faces and cost his team a good amount of time.
