Rediscovery EP: The Compact Calix of Cebu
« on: July 19, 2010, 05:01:45 PM »
Author's Note: This is one of the episodes of my independent project, Legends: The Rediscovery.  More information on the project can be found by following this link.

Episode 93px]

The camera swerves through a thick rainforest, and after multiple turns, it eventually stops in front of an ancient temple.  The eyes of giant stone head next to the temple gate light up red as he begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE!"
The show's logo forms as two halves of a Pendant of Life come in from the sides of the screen and merge; the show's name appears above the logo as the camera pans across the entire temple.
"With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk emerges from a thick patch of jungle plants and shrubs, then runs into the foreground and up a wide set of steps to greet the crowd. "Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple.  The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures of his temple.  Which one are we gonna hear about today?"

Faint orange lights underneath Olmec turn on, and the camera cuts to a close-up of him as he replies:
"The legend of the Compact Calix of Cebu."

"Oh, the Compact Calix of Cebu!" Kirk says in response as the camera cuts back to him, "Well, one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the Calix.  Will it be:
"Ray and Annie of the Red Jaguars?" the camera pans to each team in order, their first names briefly appearing at the bottom of the screen?
"Alex and Michelle of the Blue Barracudas,
"Justin and Mackenzie of the Green Monkeys,
"Sean and Monica of the Orange Iguanas,
"Jamie and Alison of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Josh and Christine of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some physical and mental tests," says Kirk, "and in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  But first, they?ll have to cross the Moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today?
"In front of each team, there's a balance beam that goes across the Moat.  When I say 'Go,' one player from each team will walk out onto it and try to make their way to the other side, but if they fall in, they gotta go back and they'll have to start all over again."
"As soon as the second player step onto the deck, it's his job to run over and hit the gong." He hits the top button on the Red Jaguars' gong? which lights up red? to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will be going into the next round.  Are you ready?"
"YEAH!" The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"It's go time!" Olmec replies.
"All right!" Kirk says in response. "On your marks, get set, GO!"

From the beginning of the round, the teams? overall skill varies greatly.  The girl on the Purple Parrots and the boy on the Red Jaguars have a very hard time getting started, whereas the first players on the other teams progress quickly. ?These teams are tough, they?re standing it out and moving on! It?s a thin beam, but they don?t care!? After fourteen seconds, the male Orange Iguana becomes the first player to get to the other side of the Moat, with the girls on the Blue Barracudas and Green Monkeys not too far behind.
?I think it?s gonna be close, we need four? Red Jaguars just fell in! They gotta go back!? Kirk remarks roughly thirty seconds into the challenge, as the male Red Jaguar is sent back from about three-quarters of the way across the Moat.  By this point, all of the other teams have one player across, and several are close to finishing. ?Here come the teams, all right! Who?s gonna be first?? The girl on the Orange Iguanas is not as fast as her partner; as a result, the Green Monkeys lock in first, forty seconds after the start of the round, with the Blue Barracudas right on their tail. ?We got two teams, we need two more!? The female Orange Iguana and Silver Snake make their way over shortly after. ?That?s it! We got our four teams!?
The camera cuts to the Blue Barracudas celebrating in front of their lit-up gong as Kirk runs over to meet with them. ?Blue Barracudas blazed across, and going on to the Steps of Knowledge are the Blue Barracudas?? Kirk holds for applause while the camera briefly shows each of the qualifying teams? ?and the Green Monkeys? and the Orange Iguanas? and the Silver Snakes! The Red Jaguars and the Purple Parrots gave it a great effort.  We got a great gift for them for playing and here?s what it is.? Ray, Annie, Jamie and Alison will each be receiving a copy of Monsters vs. Aliens on DVD.

Rediscovery EP: The Compact Calix of Cebu
« Reply #1 on: July 19, 2010, 05:05:13 PM »
When the camera cuts away from the consolation prize, the four remaining teams, accompanied by Kirk, are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge. "The quest continues, and it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the legend of the Compact Chalice of Cebu.  But pay attention, teams, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you a step closer to the Temple."
Olmec begins to tell the legend:

"One of the greatest navigators from the Age of Exploration was Ferdinand Magellan.  Christopher Columbus before him claimed that he sailed to India by going west, but Magellan was doubtful, and so in 1519, he left Spain with five ships and planned to sail west around the entire world.
" 'That landlubber sailed west to India? I have to see this for myself.'
"Over the next two years, Magellan and his crew sailed down to the southern tip of South America, and continued through a strait that was later named for him.  The ships weaved their way around many Pacific islands, and eventually they landed in the Philippines.  The Rajah of Mazaua welcomed them with open arms, bearing gifts, and told them:
" 'You'll surely want to land on Cebu and speak with the rajah there, too.  Just keep sailing west, and if you hit Manila, you've gone too far.'
"Magellan and his men wandered on through the next islands, and when they landed on Cebu, sure enough, the rajah and his queen were waiting.  They prepared a feast for Magellan and his men, and during dinner, Magellan and the rajah discussed trade possibilities.  The rajah agreed to open Cebuano ports to the Spaniards, and the two drank some wine from the same calix to close the deal.  However, the rajah had one more suggestion:
" 'The island of Mactan? We've been at war with them for a while.  Can you help?'
" '?Ciertamente!' replied Magellan, and the next day, they sailed off to Mactan.  They tried to make peace with the natives there and end the fighting, but the natives wouldn't listen, and the Rajah of Mactan did away with Magellan.  The last eighteen of his men made it back to Spain on one boat, however, completed a trip around the world and trade plans between Spain and the island of Cebu were still honored, and the calix from the feast made its way to the Temple.  Your quest is to retrieve the Compact Calix of Cebu and bring it back here."

"Thank you Olmec," Kirk replies once Olmec finishes telling the legend, "but tell us: Where is the Chalice?"
Olmec says in response:
"The Compact Calix of Cebu can be found in the Central Dock." The camera zooms in on a tall golden cup situated in the crow's nest of the fully-assembled ship in the Central Dock, then fades back to Kirk.

"All right.  Teams," Kirk begins, "in a moment, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're right, you're gonna move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance." Kirk starts walking down the steps at this point, then turns around to face the teams. "The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Olmec, we?re now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
?Was Magellan?s goal to be the first to: Sail to India going west, Sail to ???
Michelle hits the marking first: ?Sail around the world???
?Correct,? answers Olmec.
?Nice job, Blue Barracudas, step down!? Kirk calls, and the Blue Barracudas move down to the second step as the audience applauds in the background. ?Next question.?

Olmec asks:
?In our legend, Magellan tried to make peace with the natives of which of these groups of islands: Cape Verde, Indones???
Justin cuts off Olmec this time: ?The? Philippines.?
?Correct.?
?Green Monkeys, step down!? encourages Kirk, and the Green Monkeys move down beside the Blue Barracudas. ?It?s a stompin? match! Next question, Olmec.?

Olmec now asks:
?Did Magellan sail for: Spain, Portugal???
A stomp from Josh prompts Olmec to stop talking: ??Spain???
?Correct,? Olmec replies.
?Silver Snakes on the board!? Kirk remarks as the Silver Snakes also move down to the second step. ?I can tell this is gonna be a close match.  We need two teams.  Next question.?

Olmec asks:
?When Magellan and his men reached Cebu, did they and the leader there: Fight each oth???
Justin rings in: ?They? agreed they could trade together.?
There is a pause.
?That is correct.?
?They realize they?re now one step away from the Temple Games,? comments Kirk as the Green Monkeys move down to the third step. ?Orange Iguanas, still plenty of time.  Olmec, next question, please.?

Olmec continues:
?Were the leaders of the Philippine island tribes known as: Pharaohs, Archd???
Josh buzzes in, but takes a moment to answer: ?? Rajahs.?
The bell rings as Josh answers.
?That is correct,? Olmec finally says.
?Pulled it out in the clutch! Silver Snakes are now one step away from the Temple Games!? narrates Kirk as the Silver Snakes are allowed to join the Green Monkeys on the penultimate step. ?Next question, Olmec!?

Olmec asks:
?Magellan was killed on which of these islands: Mindanao, Mactan or Luzon??
As Olmec is reading the third choice, Josh gongs in once again: ?Mactan.?
?That is correct!? Olmec shouts, and the Silver Snakes jump down onto the bottommost level of the steps.
?There?s our first team for the Temple Games, and it?s the Silver Snakes!? Kirk announces as Josh and his partner high-ten multiple times and the audience temporarily applauds. ?But we still need one more team, who?s it gonna be: the Blue Barracudas, the Orange Iguanas or the Green Monkeys? Let?s keep going.?

Olmec?s next question is this:
?How many of Magellan?s men made it back to Spain alive: Eight, Eighteen???
Michelle stomps down and answers: ?Eighteen.?
?That is correct.?
?Blue Barracudas now just one step away from the Temple Games!? remarks Kirk as the Blue Barracudas also reach the third step. ?They?re now tied with the Green Monkeys, it?s anybody?s game.  Olmec, next question.?

Olmec then asks:
?According to the legend, did Magellan and the Rajah of Cebu close the trading deal by: Drinking wine from the same calix, Drinking wine from???
Michelle hits the marking first: ?They? uh, drank wine? from the same? calix???
?THAT IS CORRECT!? bellows Olmec, and the Blue Barracudas hop down beside the Silver Snakes on the bottom step.  However, Kirk runs onscreen and up onto the bottom step past the two teams before they start celebrating with one another.
?We got our two teams right here!? Kirk says as he makes the trip and then turns around to face the camera. ?And they are the Blue Barracudas and the Silver Snakes! Gimme some five!? He high-fives the boy on the Blue Barracudas. ?The Green Monkeys and the Orange Iguanas gave it a great effort too.  We got a great gift for them for playing and here?s what it is.? Justin, Mackenzie, Sean and Monica will each be receiving a custom Legends of the Hidden Temple watch provided by Armitron.
When the camera cuts away from the consolation prize, only Kirk and the two remaining teams are still present at the base of the Steps of Knowledge. ?These two teams will be playing for the right to enter Olmec?s Temple? right after this!? The camera pans out, then zooms in on the sunken ship in the upper-right corner of the Graveyard of Ships.  Then, the show?s logo reappears and the camera then fades to commercial.

Rediscovery EP: The Compact Calix of Cebu
« Reply #2 on: July 19, 2010, 05:12:29 PM »
When the camera fades in from black, the show?s titlecard is placed over a shot of part of the audience.  The pendant splits and the title shrinks into the distance; the camera zooming out to show part of the Moat adds to the effect, and a moment after the title is completely gone, the camera segues to Kirk standing in front of the Pit of Despair with the two remaining teams on either side.
?Welcome back to Legends,? he says. ?Now is the time when the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, so let?s get to know our two teams.? He turns to the left side of the screen to talk with the girl on the Silver Snakes, a slightly taller-than-average blond with straight, shoulder-length hair, freckles and blue eyes. ?On the Silver Snakes, we have Christine.  How old are you, Christine??
?Thirteen,? she answers.
?Now it says here you play softball and swim, but you?ve been to 42 states,? Kirk reads from the index card in his hand. ?Tell me about that.?
?Well,? Christine explains, ?my dad?s in the military so we move around every couple years, and my mom likes to take me on different trips everywhere.?
?What?s your favorite state??
?Right here in Florida,? she smiles.
?Well, I hope you have a good time here,? Kirk replies; he then goes to talk to Christine?s partner, a boy about the same height as Christine, with short dark hair and brown eyes.  The boy is wearing a silver waterproof coat over his team shirt. ?And also on the Silver Snakes, we have Josh.  How old are you, Josh??
?Thirteen,? answers Josh.
?And I understand you?re on your school?s basketball team, but you also like to collect coins,? reads Kirk. ?Tell me about that.?
?Well, I got about thirty from around the world,? Josh answers.
?What?s your favorite??
?Probly the two-euro coin.?
?Ah, cool,? Kirk answers. ?Well, you?re gonna have to do some collecting here.  Let?s hear it for the Silver Snakes!? The audience applauds momentarily, and Josh and Christine clap along with them as Kirk turns to the right side of the screen.  He proceeds to talk to the girl on the Blue Barracudas, a long-, straight-haired brunette with hazel eyes. ?And on the Blue Barracudas, we have Michelle.  How old are you??
?Twelve.?
?And I heard you make dolls for your younger sisters,? comments Kirk. ?Tell me about that.?
?Well,? answers Michelle, ?I learned to sew from my mom and I made little stuffed dolls for my sisters, they?re twins and they?re four.  I use fabrics? um, I wanna learn to work with plastic or porcelain.?
?Ah, very nice,? Kirk smiles.  He then goes to interview Michelle?s partner at the far right edge of the screen, a short-haired platinum blond with slightly reddish skin and blue eyes, who is wearing a blue waterproof coat over his team shirt. ?And Alex, how old are you??
?Thirteen.?
?And I understand you like windsurfing, skateboarding and snowboarding? lot of different sports there! But which do you like better??
?Um? windsurfing ?cause I like summer and the ocean,? Alex replies.
?All right,? Kirk comments before turning to the audience. ?Let?s hear it for the Blue Barracudas!? The audience applauds again, and this time, Michelle and Alex clap along.

?Okay, why don?t you girls go get ready for the first Temple Game, guys go get ready for the second Temple Game,? Kirk says, pointing in different directions, and as Kirk faces the camera again, Michelle and Christine walk offscreen in one direction and Alex and Josh in another. ?In the Temple Games, each team is competing to win?" he opens a pouch and pulls out a small gold medallion to show to the camera? "these Pendants of Life.  They?re gonna need those Pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through the Temple.  There are three Temple Games.  Olmec, will you tell us about Temple Game #1??

Olmec begins:
"Ferdinand Magellan and his men had to travel for a very long time to sail around the globe.  In this game, your voyage will be much shorter.  When Kirk gives the signal, climb on the wheel and adjust your weight to make the wheel spin.  Each time the wheel makes one full rotation, it symbolizes one mile sailed.  The player that sails the furthest in 60 seconds... wins!"
The camera fades over to Kirk. "I've never seen ships that look like this," he comments. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock." A countdown clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen with a bang, and Kirk moves off to the side to avoid being in the way of the camera. "On your mark, get set, GO!"
Christine and Michelle start turning the wheels as soon as Kirk says ?Go,? and at first the two look even.  However, after about fifteen seconds, Michelle is about one-and-a-half revolutions ahead of Christine, who appears to be having a little trouble keeping her balance. ?Blue Barracudas doing great?? Christine falls off the wheel with 42 seconds to go? ?Silver Snakes just fell off! She?s gotta? get back on and try to catch up!? When Christine climbs back onto the wheel, she tries hard to close the gap between her score and Michelle?s, but by the halfway mark, a little more than one revolution still separates them.  However, Michelle falls off her wheel with 26 seconds on the clock.
?There?s a chance for the Silver Snakes to catch up! Can they take it?? Christine more or less closes the gap by the time Michelle recovers; even with time ticking down, the scores are pretty much even.  When time runs out, a pattern of ceiling spotlights flashes to indicate the end of the game, the countdown clock shatters and Kirk runs onscreen to count the scores.
?All right, time?s up!? he announces as he runs over, gesturing for the girls to join him. ?Silver Snakes, Blue Barracudas? they both got twelve miles, so they both get the half-Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds for the teams. ?The next game is worth a half-Pendant.  Olmec, tell us about it.?

Olmec continues:
"Magellan and his men had to deal with much more than just angry natives; storms often threatened to destroy the ships, but they had to push on against stormy waters and heavy rain.  Behind you is a diagonal waterfall.  When Kirk gives the signal, push the ship up the waterfall with your backs until you reach the top.  Place the ship there, and slide back down.
"The first player to place the ship at the top of the waterfall and slide back down? or the player that's further along after 60 seconds? wins."
"This looks like a tough journey, so I'll wish them 'Von boyage,' " comments Kirk as the camera segues over to him. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock." The countdown clock appears onscreen in the bottom-right corner; a silver half-Pendant appears in the upper-left corner, a blue half-Pendant in the upper-right. "On your mark, get set, GO!"
?There they go!? Josh and Alex start to make their way up the slopes, but Alex has a markedly difficult time at first. ?They gotta? use their backs? and climb up on their hands and feet!? Only eight seconds into the round, Alex loses grip on the raised sides of the slope and slides back down to the bottom, having barely made any progress. ?Blue Barracudas having trouble? he?s like a fish that can?t swim!? It takes about twenty seconds for Alex to make any respectable progress, but by this time, Josh is well over two-thirds of the way to the top.  With 32 seconds remaining, Alex makes it halfway up, but Josh is near the top, struggling to get the ship on top of the water hole behind him. ?He can?t? Silver Snakes can just get it in there with his hands if he has to now!? With 29 seconds to go, Josh places the ship over the hole and promptly slides back down, creating a big splash.  The countdown clock and Pendant display disappear from the screen.
?That?s it! C?mon down, Alex!? Kirk calls, and Alex slides down the slope. ?That was?? Kirk tries to hold back a laugh for some reason. ?That was a nice splash right there? but the Silver Snakes made it up first and got their ship at the top when time ended, so they get the Pendant of Life! Gimme a wet high-five!? The audience cheers for a few moments as Kirk and Josh high-five. ?So we?re down to the third and final game, it?s worth a full Pendant.  Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3.?

Olmec narrates:
"Legend has it that Magellan and his men negotiated trade between Spain and the Philippine island of Cebu, but the long route to get there and the more aggressive natives between the two places would make trade difficult.  In this game, the wall before you will represent these problems.  When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will grab one of the jewels, then both of you will climb up the wall.  Transfer the jewel over the wall, and then climb back down and place it in your bin.  Then, do it again.
"The team that transfers the most jewels in 60 seconds wins."
The camera transitions to Kirk. "This is for the Temple," he says. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock." The clock appears onscreen; a silver full Pendant appears in the upper-left corner, a blue half-Pendant in the upper-right.  Kirk then backs up and moves out of the camera frame. "On your mark, get set, GO!"
Christine and Michelle grab their first jewels, and both partners on each team start scaling the walls. ?They gotta? climb the walls and meet their each other at the top!? The boys climb a bit faster than the girls, but the Silver Snakes make the first transfer with 52 seconds to go, prompting Christine to climb back down to grab a second jewel and Josh to go down and put the first one in the team bin on his side of the wall.  Josh drops the first jewel in the bin with 45 seconds left; the Blue Barracudas need three more seconds to even the score.  They start up the wall again, but partway up, Michelle loses her grip on the wall (:38). ?Ohh, she dropped her jewel and she?s gotta go back for it!? Michelle retreats down the wall to grab the jewel. ?Now they gotta make up some time to catch up!?
Both teams have slowed down a bit after their first climb, but the Silver Snakes still manage a second transfer around the halfway mark, and Josh drops the second jewel in the team?s bin with 23 seconds to go.  At that time, the Blue Barracudas are just starting back down the wall; Alex places the second jewel in the bin with sixteen seconds remaining. ?They might have time for one more?? With ten seconds left, the Silver Snakes complete a third transfer at the top of the wall; the Blue Barracudas are still a few seconds behind.  Josh drops the third jewel in the bin with three seconds left, but Alex cannot reach the bottom of the wall before the ceiling spotlights flash and time expires.
?That?s it! Time?s up, let?s check it out!? shouts Kirk, who reappears onscreen as the clock shatters and the Pendant count disappears.  He pulls over the bins and summons the players, who walk over as soon as the spotters free them from the equipment. ?Let?s start with the Blue Barracudas.  They got?? he reaches into the Barracudas? bin and pulls out a sapphire and a diamond? ?one? two jewels.  The Silver Snakes got?? Kirk pulls a diamond, a black pearl and a topaz out of the Silver Snakes? bin? ?one, two? three jewels! The Silver Snakes get the full Pendant, that gives them two? they?re goin? to the Temple!? Josh and Christine briefly hug and high-ten while Kirk goes to talk to their opponents. ?Blue Barracudas gave it a great effort too.  Here?s what we?ve got for them.? Michelle and Alex will each be receiving a $100 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Skechers.
When the camera cuts away from the Barracudas? consolation prize, only the Silver Snakes and Kirk are still present; all three are standing in front of one of the walls used in the third Temple Game. ?We?ll see if the Silver Snakes can make it through Olmec?s Temple and retrieve the Emerald Earrings of Maria Theresa,? he says, ?right after this!? The camera swerves over to the wheels used in the first Temple Game and zooms in on one of them.  The show?s logo appears and the camera fades to commercial.

Rediscovery EP: The Compact Calix of Cebu
« Reply #3 on: July 19, 2010, 05:23:17 PM »
When the camera returns from the second commercial break, the show's logo is partially covering a shot of the Silver Snakes' torch at the far side of the Moat.  The Pendant of Life splits, the title fades into the distance and the camera segues to Kirk standing in front of the Temple's stairs, to the camera-right of Josh and Christine. "Welcome back to Legends," he says to the camera. "The Silver Snakes have proven themselves worthy and have earned the right to enter the Temple.  But before we get started, Olmec's gonna give them some information to help them retrieve the Calix of Cebu."
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You could start by running up to the Room of the Ancient Masks.  Push in the correct mask, and pass into the Pit of Despair.  There, you could race up into the Observatory, read the instructions on the far wall with the telescope and follow the instructions to open the door to the Central Dock.  Next, you might have to pass into the Den of Totem Poles.  Turn all the faces forward; that may take you below or lead you into the SHRINE of the Siiiiiiilver MOOOON-key! Assemble the statue, and you may be headed toward the Pirate's Cove! Place the torch in the correct holder to go back, or spin the ship's wheel and enter? the Graveyard of Ships.
"Stand on the correct grave to go upstairs? but beware the Temple Guard that might be haunting one of the graves! Or, plow through the wall and into the Viper's Nest.  Reach into the snake jars and find the key, and you'll enter the Bamboo Forest! If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Cannon Room.  Load the three cannonballs into the cannon, and if the correct door is unlocked, you can crawl back through the Pit and finally climb through the Cave, rrrrace down the STAIRS and back through the Temple Gate.  The choices are yours and yours ALONE!" Olmec pauses for a second. "You won 2 Pendants in the Temple Games.  Who's going first?"
"I am," says Christine.
"Very well, Christine!" replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way towards the Compact Calix of Cebu.  Hidden in the Temple are three secret passages that may lead you into the Bamboo Forest, and Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms.  You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on BUT? if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple? and it'll be Josh's turn to enter and try his luck.  If you reach the Calix, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish.  Return through the gates with the Calix of Cebu in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded? and here's how!"
?   For just getting into the Temple, they're both going to get a Schwinn Mesa mountain bike.
?   If they can grab the Calix in three minutes, they're also going to get an Xzibit Video Game Rocker, provided by Dreamseat.
?   And if they can get the Calix of Cebu out of the Temple before three minutes is up, they'll both be going to the Bahamas! The Bahamas Princess Resort, on exciting Grand Bahama Island, offering tennis, swimming and international entertainment.  Fun for the whole family, from the Bahamas Princess Resort!

"The Bahamas! Let's get 'em there!" Kirk says before turning to Josh. "But Josh, tell me: What's your strategy?"
"Um, we're just gonna? go up," he says, gesturing to the Room of the Ancient Masks, "then we're gonna go through the Pit, and hopefully the doors will open, but we?re just gonna try to go straight across as long as we can."
"All right.  Let's see if that works out," Kirk says with a smile, to which Sarah nods.  Kirk then turns to Christine. "Christine, you're going first, that means we need you out in front.  Both of you, put your mouthpieces in.  Olmec, lower the gate!"
Olmec groans gutturally as he lowers the gate; the faint orange lights under him are turned off.
"Set the clock for three minutes." The clock appears onscreen. "On your mark, get set, GO!"

Christine runs up the stairs of the Temple. ?There she goes, up into the Temple!? Kirk begins the play-by-play. ?They got two Pendant, let?s see how far that?ll take ?em!? Christine enters the Room of the Ancient Masks and immediately pushes the mask located on the back wall on the right.  After that, she hits the stage-left mask on the back wall, then looks over at the door to the Pit of Despair. ?Nothing opens! She?s gotta go down!? With 2:40 on the clock, Christine climbs down the ladder into the Cave, but shortly after her arrival, something tugs at her feet?
?TEMPLE GUARD!? Kirk shouts out, and Christine shrieks as the Temple Guard pulls her down through the ledges. ?She?s gotta give him her Pendant, and she can go on!? Hesitantly, Christine passes her Pendant of Life over to the Temple Guard, and climbs further down, towards the lower crawl tube leading into the Pit of Despair, which does open (2:26). ?She?s moving on! Into the Pit of Despair, where she?ll have three options where to go!? Christine carefully walks across the foam-block-covered floor of the Pit to get to the Cannon Room door, but the door fails to open when she hits the actuator. ?She?s gonna have to climb the wall!? Christine hesitantly looks up, then starts searching for indents in the stage-left wall which she can use as handholds and footholds (2:16). ?Next time a Temple Guard gets ?er, it?ll be turn for Alex!? Kirk comments as Christine steadily makes her way up towards the stage-left side ledge in the Pit.  She hoists herself up and over the ledge with 2:01 remaining, then hits the Central Dock actuator. ?She tries the Central Dock, that doesn?t open! She?s gotta go up, up into the Observatory!? Christine hits the Observatory actuator and heads up through the door, but just as she enters the room, the second Temple Guard arrives and takes her out with 1:50 to go.
?Oh, Temple Guard! Go Josh!? Kirk shouts, sending Josh into the Temple.  He runs up the stairs into the Room of the Ancient Masks, then climbs down into the Cave and enters the Pit of Despair with 1:24 remaining.  He promptly goes over to the stage-left wall of the Pit and starts making his way up the wall to get to the side ledge.  Josh scales the wall at a medium speed, hoists himself up onto the ledge, gets up and heads up the staircase into the Observatory, setting foot in the room with 1:07 on the clock. ?He?s really gotta make up some time now!? Josh stops in front of the telescope and looks directly into the lens, turning the focusing knobs for a few seconds. ?He?s gotta? figure out what he?s gotta do to open the door!? While Josh is looking through the telescope, the camera briefly cuts to a shot of the writing on the wall? ?Spin Saturn and Venus? (0:59)? but when it cuts back to Josh, he is already walking over to the two altars in the front of the room.  He grabs the Saturn model on the right altar by the giant ring and spins it, and does the same to the Venus model on the left altar, opening the door to the Den of Totem Poles.  Josh then promptly heads down the stairs and enters the room with 51 seconds remaining.
?He?s gotta? turn the totem poles!? explains Kirk as Josh goes over to the first totem pole and starts turning the faces, starting with the stage-right totem pole in the room. ?He?s gotta turn the faces so they face out, and he?s gotta move fast!? Josh, having already moved on from the bottom face on the right pole, goes back to it to turn it properly (0:41) before continuing with the upper faces.  The stage-right totem pole is completed with 36 seconds to go, and Josh hurries over to the left pole to do the same. ?Maybe the door?s gonna open, he can go back!? Josh properly aligns the faces on the second totem pole faster than those on the first totem pole, but only the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey opens when Josh completes the objective with 22 seconds remaining.
?Silver Monkey! He?s gotta put together this? silver monkey!? Immediately, Josh climbs up onto the back shelves and grabs all three pieces of the monkey in one sweep, then brings them all to the pedestal in the front of the room (0:11!). ?He knows what?s he?s doing?? Josh places the base on the pedestal, then gets ready with the middle (0:07). ?But I don?t think he?s gonna make it!? He places the torso on the platform, as the audience counts down the last few seconds.  Josh jams the head into the statue, but time runs out right then.
?Augh, they didn?t make it!? Kirk remarks, his hand on Christine?s shoulder. ?They ran out of time in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey, but they both gave it a great effort, and they still get the mountain bikes.  But we gotta get outta here.  Join us again for another great Legend of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!? The camera shows rooms like the Shrine of the Silver Monkey and Den of Totem Poles, along with Josh returning to the foreground and various detail shots of foliage and other scenery, as the credits roll.

Rediscovery EP: The Compact Calix of Cebu

Episode Summary
Episode 93px]

Season: 3

Pendants Won: 2
Location of Artifact: The Central Dock

Can I just say the Steps of Knowledge in this episode were annoying? The Moat wasn't bad at all, but the players rang in early on EVERY SINGLE QUESTION during the Steps? I mean, they knew the answers, but it was still a bit irritating to hear.  Watching the Temple Games, I was expecting a tiebreaker where one of the teams would pull an "Electrified Key," but that didn't happen because the Silver Snakes scored a decisive victory over the Blue Barracudas, 2-?.

Christine volunteered to go into the Temple first, and like many Season 3 contestants, she did not try all three of the masks in the Room of the Ancient Masks.  Instead, she only tried the two on the back wall and then went down into the Cave, where the first Temple Guard was waiting.  However, this might have been the best chance the team could've gotten, since Christine was removed as early as the Observatory that way.

Josh launched in and followed Christine's path to the letter, but time-consuming room objectives meant that time ran out as soon as he put the head on the silver monkey.  We never see the third Temple Guard, but considering that he could've been waiting much further along the correct path, going down into the Cave might have helped the team instead of hurting them, depending on how much later the final guard would've appeared.  Both players were slightly hesitant and also slow climbers; the best decision they could've made was using the upper crawl tube in the Cave instead of the lower one, because they wouldn't have had to climb out of the Pit if that crawl tube was active.

Trivia and Records:
This is the only episode in which the teams rang in early every single time at the Steps of Knowledge.
