Rediscovery EP: The Great Seal of the Axumite King

Author's Note: This is one of the episodes in my independent project.  If you have any complaints, first thing to do is to go see the episode directory here:
Legends: The Rediscovery

Episode 74px]

The camera maneuvers through a thick rainforest to stop in front of an ancient temple.  A giant stone head next to the gate of the temple begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk appears from behind the Temple Guard door in the Dungeon and runs straight out into the foreground of the stage to greet the crowd. "Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Nice to see you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple.  The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple.  Which legend are we gonna hear about today?"

Olmec replies:
"The Legend of the Great Seal of the Axumite King."

"Well, the adventure is set," Kirk says in response, "and one of these six teams will get a chance to retrieve the Great Seal.  Will it be:
"Kevin and Emily of the Red Jaguars?" the camera pans to each team in order?
"Robert and Hannah of the Blue Barracudas,
"Jake and Amanda of the Green Monkeys,
"Truc and Jasmine of the Orange Iguanas,
"Kristian and Samantha of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Adan and Lauren of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass several tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "and in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  But first, they?ll have to cross the Moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today??
"Well, the Moat's frozen, so one player from each team is sitting in a sliding ring.  When I say go, he'll use the rope to pull himself along until he reaches the other side of the Moat.  Then he'll slide the ring back to his partner and his partner has to pull himself across."
"As soon as the second player climbs out onto the deck, it's his job to run over here and hit the gong." He slams down on the Red Jaguars' gong to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will be going into the next round.  Hey, teams! Are you ready?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"Thought you?d never ask!" Olmec replies.
"All right!" Kirk says in response. "On your marks teams, get set, GO!"

The four winning teams seem to be clear as early as when the first players pull themselves across the Moat, as the Blue Barracudas and Silver Snakes are furthest behind.  The first players get across in the order of Purple, then Red, then Orange, Green and Blue.  As soon as they land, they get up and begin to throw the inner tubes back at their partners.  Not all the teams have the best aim, though; the Orange Iguanas and Purple Parrots are the first to get the inner tubes back across the ice, followed by the Silver Snakes.  Eventually the Blue Barracudas are the last to get the inner tube back.  After some rope-pulling to get across, the Purple Parrots become the first team to hit their gong.
?There, we got our first? we got two teams!? Kirk announces as the Orange Iguanas also make it across. ?We need two more!? The Silver Snake pulls himself across pretty slowly, however, making the Red Jaguars and the Green Monkeys the last two teams to successfully gong in.
?That?s it! We got our teams right here!? The next thing the camera shows is Kirk standing with the Red Jaguars around their lit gong. ?Red Jaguars did a nice job getting across the ice.  They?re going onto the Steps of Knowledge, along with the Green Monkeys?? the camera shows the other qualifying teams in order? ?and the Orange Iguanas? and the Purple Parrots! The Blue Barracudas and the Silver Snakes gave it a great effort.  They?re not going away empty-handed, we got a great gift for them and here?s what it is.? Adan, Robert, Hannah and Lauren will each be receiving a backpack provided by Eastpak.

Rediscovery EP: The Great Seal of the Axumite King
« Reply #1 on: October 09, 2009, 11:23:54 AM »
The four teams are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "The quest continues, and it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the Great Seal of the Accident King, but pay attention, teams, because your knowledge of the Legend can bring you a step closer to the Temple."
Olmec begins to tell the legend:
"One of the most ruthless warrior rulers of ancient times was Queen Gudit.  She ruled over a kingdom in Ethiopia, and was beautiful with long dark hair, but just as cruel as she was pretty, and she loved conquering other kingdoms.
" 'All of it! I must have it all!' Gudit proclaimed. 'The world should be a treasure for me and me alone!'
"Gudit took over all the kingdoms around her, including the Kingdom of Axum.  She had King Dil Na'od murdered, destroyed Axum and built over it another part of her own kingdom, which, according to legend, she ruled for forty years.  Legend has it she terrorized her people and often burned their homes as punishment, and she also kept all the treasures of the Axumite King.  She even used his royal seal as her own, but when she died, the Great Seal of the Axumite King made its way to the Temple.  Your quest is to find it and bring it back here."

"Thank you Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the legend. "So tell us, where is the Great Seal?"
Olmec replies:
"The Great Seal of the Axumite King can be found in the Switch Inferno." The camera zooms in on the Seal hung above one of the actuators on the back wall of the Switch Inferno, then fades back to Kirk.

"All right.  Teams," Kirk begins, walking down the steps, "you're now standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a minute, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're right, you're gonna move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance to answer.  The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Olmec, we're now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
?Did Gudit rule over a portion of: Sudan, Egypt???
Amanda hits the marking first: ?Ethiopia.?
?Correct,? says Olmec in response.
?Nice job, Green Monkeys, step down,? says Kirk, and the Green Monkeys move down to the second level. ?Next question.?
Olmec asks:
?Was Gudit a: King, Queen or Archd???
Samantha gongs in: ?Queen!?
?Correct.?
?Purple Parrots, step down!? says Kirk, and the Purple Parrots also move down a step. ?We?re looking for two teams.  Next question, Olmec.?
Olmec now asks:
?In our legend, was Gudit described as: Beautiful but cruel, Smart but quiet???
Emily cuts Olmec off this time: ?Um? Beautiful but? cruel.?
?Correct,? Olmec answers.
?Red Jaguars, nice job, step down!? The Red Jaguars move down beside the Green Monkeys. ?Orange Iguanas can still get in this.  Next question, Olmec.?
Olmec asks:
?According to our legend, did she want to: Explore the entire world, Conquer the entire world or Convert???
A stomp by Samantha interrupts Olmec: ?Conquer the whole world.?
?That is correct,? replies Olmec.
?Purple Parrots now just one step away from the Temple Games,? says Kirk as the Purple Parrots move down to the third step, ?but we?re looking for two teams.  Next question.?
Olmec then asks:
?After killing the Axumite king, did Gudit: Destroy his treasures, Keep his treasures or Trade his tr???
Emily buzzes in: ?She? uh, kept his treasure.?
?That is correct.?
?Red Jaguars now one step away from the Temple Games!? Kirk remarks as the Red Jaguars move down to the penultimate level. ?The other teams can still catch up.  Olmec, next question.?
Olmec asks:
?Did Gudit terrorize her people by: Imprisoning???
Kevin rings in, but blanks and says nothing before a bell sounds.
?The three choices are?? begins Olmec, but another stomp interrupts him.
Samantha confidently answers: ?She burned their houses down.?
?That is correct!? Olmec shouts, and the Purple Parrots jump down onto the bottommost step.
?We got our first team! It?s the Purple Parrots!? Kirk announces. ?We still need one more team; who?s it gonna be? Olmec, continue.?
Olmec does so by asking:
?Was the Axumite king called: Dil Na?od, Dil Ahmad or Dil Pickles??
Kevin stomps down and guesses: ?Dil? Nay-odd???
There is a pause.
?That is correct!? Olmec finally shouts, allowing the Red Jaguars to join the Purple Parrots at the bottom level.
?All right, we?ve got our two teams!? Kirk announces, walking up onto the final step between the two qualifying teams, who then celebrate and congratulate each other as he turns to face the camera. ?The Red Jaguars and Purple Parrots, they?re gonna go head-to-head in the Temple Games!? Kirk then turns around and continues. ?Green Monkeys and Orange Iguanas gave it a great effort too.  We?ve got a nice gift for them for playing and here?s what they get.? Jake, Amanda, Jasmine and Truc will each be receiving a small sports package provided by Regent.
Kirk is standing on the bottom level of the Steps of Knowledge behind the Red Jaguars and Purple Parrots. ?These two teams will be playing for the right to enter Olmec?s Temple,? he says, ?and they?ll do it right after this!? The camera zooms in on the ledges in the Crevasse, then fades to commercial.

Rediscovery EP: The Great Seal of the Axumite King
« Reply #2 on: October 09, 2009, 11:25:04 AM »
Kirk is now standing in front of the Great Chasm between the last two remaining teams. ?Welcome back to Legends,? he says. ?Now is the time when the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, so let?s hear it for Samantha and Kristian of the Purple Parrots!? The straight-auburn-haired girl and dark-haired boy to the stage-left of Kirk clap along with the audience. ?And Emily and Kevin of the Red Jaguars!? The blond girl and brown-haired boy with hazel eyes clap at the same time that the audience cheers for them. ?All right! You guys ready to play??
?YEAH!? the players shout in response.
?Okay, go get ready for the Temple Games!? Kirk responds excitedly, and then Samantha and Emily walk offscreen in one direction, Kristian and Kevin in another. ?In the Temple Games, these two teams are gonna be competing for these?" he opens a pouch and pulls out a small gold medallion to show to the camera? "Pendants of Life.  The winning team will need those Pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through the Temple.  There are three Temple Games.  Olmec, tell us about the first one.?

Olmec begins:
?Gudit loved conquering kingdoms, and Axum was only one of them.  When Kirk gives the signal, climb on the wheel and adjust your weight to make the wheel spin.  When it makes one full rotation, it means one more kingdom has been taken over.  The player who conquers the most kingdom in 60 seconds wins.?
?Our teams have divided and now they must conquer,? Kirk says. ?Let?s put 60 seconds on the clock.? The clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and Kirk dashes off to the side. ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
Samantha and Emily both keep up a fair pace running on the wheels, but neither goes too fast so that they don?t lost balance.  Samantha leads by about a half-rotation until she falls off the wheel with 41 seconds remaining, giving Emily enough time to take the lead.  However, Emily falls with 36 seconds to go, but Samantha falls again another five seconds later.  The remainder of the game follows this pattern of trading off falls, but Samantha starts to speed up a tad and waste less time getting back up on the wheel; when the clock hits zero, a pattern of ceiling spotlights flashes to indicate that time is up.
?All right, time?s up! Let?s see how they did!? Kirk comments, reappearing onscreen. ?Looks like Emily got 11 kingdoms, but Samantha got 13! Purple Parrots get the half Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds briefly. ?Red Jaguars can catch up in this next game; it?s worth a half Pendant.  Olmec, tell us about it.?

Olmec continues:
?According to our legend, Gudit loved to torture her people by burning their homes, but in this game, you will stop a fire in progress by removing the flames.  When Kirk gives the signal, jump up, grab a flame symbol off the ceiling, and come back down to place it in your bin.  Then, jump back up and do it again.
?The first player to grab all the flame symbols? or the player that grabs the most flame symbols in 60 seconds? wins.?
The camera shows Kirk standing in front of the equipment for the Temple Game. ?Our players know better than to play with real fire,? Kirk says. ?Let?s put 60 seconds on the clock.? The clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen, ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
Both players have a little difficulty getting started, but Kristian brings down the first flame symbol for the Purple Parrots first, with 53 seconds remaining.  However, Kevin is only a couple of seconds behind.  After that, the players have a tough time jumping high enough to get more flame symbols? most noticeably Kevin? but both players do score a few more times.  A pattern of ceiling spotlights flashes when time runs out.
?All right, that?s it!? Kirk announces, running over to check things out. ?Red Jaguars got seven symbols off the ceiling, but Purple Parrots got eight! Purple Parrots get another half Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds. ?So now it?s Purple with a full Pendant, Red Jaguars don?t have any yet, but the next game is worth a full Pendant.  It?s the third and final game.  Olmec, tell us about it.?

Olmec narrates:
?From time to time, Gudit met heavy resistance when she tried to take down a kingdom.  Now you must take down the group of African warriors in front of you.  When Kirk gives the signal, lob a cannonball at one of the warriors on the wall.  Then you partner will place a cannonball in the slingshot and aim at the warriors on the wall.
?The first team to knock down all four warriors ? or the team who?s knocked over the most warriors in 60 seconds? wins.?
?This is for the Temple,? Kirk reminds the audience. ?Let?s put 60 seconds on the clock.? The clock then appears in the corner of the screen, and Kirk steps to the side. ?On your marks, get set, GO!?
The Red Jaguars get their first target almost immediately, but the Purple Parrots? first target isn?t knocked down by until 34 seconds are left.  By then, the Red Jaguars even have a second target knocked down.  They follow up with a third target at the :27 mark, and while the Purple Parrots score a second time with 19 seconds remaining, the Red Jaguars knock over their fourth and final target with fourteen seconds left.
?That?s it! Nice job by both teams!? Kirk says as he runs back onscreen to declare the winner. ?Red Jaguars finished before time was up, so they get the Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds a third time. ?That means each time has a full Pendant, so we have a tie! Bring out the tiebreaker pedestals!?

The players run over to the tiebreaker pedestals and stand behind their gongs as directed by Kirk. ?Here?s the tiebreaker rules.  In a second, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, hit the gong in front of you.  You?ll have three seconds to answer and I must accept your first response.  If you?re right, you and your partner will be going inside the Temple in search of the Great Seal, but if you?re wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance.  All clear?"
The players nod in response.
"Olmec!" Kirk shouts. "What is the final question??

Olmec asks:
?Which of these queens ruled another kingdom in what is now Ethiopia: Nefertiti, Bilqis or Nzinga??
Kristian hits the gong first: ?En-zinga???
Olmec replies:
?Incorrect.?
?All right, Red Jaguars?? Kirk asks the other team.
Kevin speaks up: ?Bill-keys???
Olmec replies:
?That is correct.?
Emily lets out a scream of joy and jumps up and down, then hugs Kevin as the audience cheers. ?Olmec?s made his decision!? announces Kirk. ?The Red Jaguars goin? to the Temple!? Kevin and Emily can be seen shaking hands with Kristian and Samantha as Kirk walks over to the Purple Parrots. ?These guys gave it a great effort too.  Here?s what we?ve got for them.? Kristian and Samantha will each receive an Eastpak backpack.
The camera cuts away from the consolation prize and back to Kirk standing behind the Red Jaguars at the tiebreaker pedestal. ?Now we?ll see if the Red Jaguars can make it through Olmec?s Temple and retrieve the Great Seal of the Axenite King? right after this!? The camera zooms in on the stained-glass window in the Cathedral, then fades to commercial.

Rediscovery EP: The Great Seal of the Axumite King
« Reply #3 on: October 09, 2009, 11:25:40 AM »
Kirk stands in front of the Temple's stairs next to Kevin and Emily. "Welcome back," he says to the camera before turning to talk to the Red Jaguars. "You two have proven yourselves worthy and earned the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  But first, here's some information to help you retrieve that Great Seal of the Axumite King."
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
?You could start by climbing through the Crevasse and climbing down into the Great Chasm.  Crawl through the pit, then race into the Crystal Cave.  Pull down the correct icicle, and you could choose to go up into the Cathedral, or into the Junction of the Secret Shafts.  If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Switch Inferno, where you can grab the Great Seal of the Axumite King.  Hit the right actuator to go upstairs, or plow through the wall and into the Dungeon.
?There, climb up the Pharaoh?s Secret Passage into the Geographer?s Study.  Take the correct book off the bookshelf to open the door? to the Shrine? of the Silver Monkey.  Assemble the statue, and you may be headed for the Knights? Barracks.  Place the sword in the correct sheath, and you could advance into the Laser Light Room.  Find the right combination to unleash the power of the laser, and swing on the rope back across the Great Chasm.  Then, pass through the Arctic Antechamber, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate.  The choices are yours and yours alone!? Olmec pauses for a second here. "You won 1 Pendant in the Temple Games.  Who's going first??
"I am!" says Kevin, raising his hand in the air.
"Very well, Kevin!" replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way towards the Seal.  Hidden inside the Temple are three ventilation shafts that let out in the Junction of the Secret Shafts, as well as Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms.  You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple? and then it'll be Emily's turn to enter and try her luck.  Hidden somewhere inside the Temple are the two halves of your Pendant.  If you can find both of them, you will get an extra life.  If you can reach the Great Seal, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish.  Return through the gates with the Great Seal of the Axumite King in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded? and here's how!"
?   For just making it into the Temple, they?re both going to get a set of microscopes provided by Tasco.
?   If they can grab the Great Seal within three minutes, they?re both going to get a $250 Target gift card.
?   If they can get the Great Seal out of the Temple before three minutes is up, they?ll be going to Quebec City!  They?ll be staying for three days at Delta Quebec, with an indoor exercise room, an outdoor heated pool and an underground mall and they?ll be there during the Carnaval de Qu?bec.  Delta Quebec, for a prize package totaling $11,036!

"Time to see if we can get these guys to Quebec," Kirk says before turning to Kevin. "Kevin, let?s get you into position.  Put your mouthpieces in.  Set the clock for three minutes." The clock then appears onscreen. "Olmec, lower your gate!"
Olmec groans gutturally as he lowers the gate; the blue lights under him are turned off.
"On your mark, get set, GO!"

?There goes Kevin, up into the Temple!? Kirk announces. ?They got one Pendant, how far can they go?? Kevin races up into the Arctic Antechamber and runs through one ice wall, opening the door leading down into the Crevasse.  He immediately heads down the ladder into the Crevasse and crawls through the ledges, but before he can exit for the Great Chasm via the lower crawl tube, something tugs at his feet?
?Oh! TEMPLE GUARD!? remarks Kirk as Kevin looks back at the guard, wide-eyed. ?He?s gotta give him up his Pendant? their only Pendant!? Kevin hands over the Pendant of Life, then opens the crawl tube and leaves the Crevasse with 2:39 remaining.  He scrambles through the pit, going for the Crystal Cave.  The door leading onward opens, and he passes into the Cave with 2:32 to go, but out jumps the second TEMPLE GUARD!
?Oh, go Emily!? Kirk shouts, and Emily heads into the Temple. ?He was in and out like a flash! But now they got no more Pendants, and she?s gotta find two halves of a new Pendant or it?s all over!? Emily slowly passes through the Arctic Antechamber, descends into the Crevasse and crawls through the ledges to enter the Great Chasm with 2:01 remaining.  There she slides through into the Crystal Cave, passing up one half of her Pendant, which is dangling from the door actuator. ?Now she?s into the room where she?s gotta pull down the icicles!? After a little stalling, Emily moves around the ladder from the stage-left side, jumping up to pull down the stalactites.  The last one she pulls opens the door to the Cathedral with 1:39 on the clock, and she climbs on up the ladder into the next room. ?She?s gotta put the window together now, and this could be tough! Minute three thirty-three!? Emily finds the first missing piece of the stained-glass window fairly easily, but it takes some work to find the other two pieces.  However, when she finds the second piece, she finds the third immediately after and takes them both up to the window.  1:18 remain when Emily completes the window; the mystic pattern on the walls glows violet and the sheet in the back of the room flies up, revealing the ladder leading upwards.  Emily starts to climb upwards, but while she pauses halfway up and turns to look at Kirk and Kevin, she also notices the door into the Knights? Barracks is open, jumps down and crawls through the other open passageway into the next room (1:07).
?All right, she?s getting there and now she?s only a few rooms away from the Great Seal of the King of Axum!? Kirk mentions.  Emily takes the sword from the front railing of the room and sticks it in each of the sheaths, starting stage-left and moving stage-right.  The doors open with 48 seconds to go, and Emily goes up the stairs into the Laser Light Room, where she kneels down in front of the laser generator and sets out trying to align the sections of it. ?She keeps going backwards instead of forwards!? Kirk points out. ?Maybe she?s got a plan, I dunno, but that door?s just gonna go back into the Pit of Despair again!? Emily finishes aligning the sections of the column with 26 seconds remaining, and the laser generator emits a beam from the dome on top.  She then looks around and realizes that the doors are all open, but after looking around she walks back down the stairs into the Knights? Barracks and into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey? passing up the other half Pendant, tacked to the wall next to the open door? with 15 seconds left.  She grabs all three pieces of the statue in one run, puts the base in position and then struggles with the other two pieces? but we?re out of time!
?Agh, time ran out in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey!? Kirk remarks. ?Time?s up for the Red Jaguars, but they still get the microscopes just for playing, and we gotta get outta here.  Join us again next time for more adventure and another great Legend of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!? Shots of rooms like the Shrine of the Silver Monkey, Switch Inferno and Geographer?s Study are shown as the credits roll.

Rediscovery EP: The Great Seal of the Axumite King
« Reply #4 on: October 09, 2009, 11:41:11 AM »
Temple Run Summary
Episode 74px]

Name of Artifact: The Great Seal of the Axumite King
Season: 2
Layout: 5 (9 overall)
Result: Failed acquisition
Time Remaining: N/A
Team: Red Jaguars
Pendants Won: 1
Location of Artifact: The Switch Inferno

Kevin might've kept the team from entering the Great Chasm sooner, but that was the only mistake he made in his thirty seconds in the Temple.  Emily wasn't anywhere near as fast, and she spent a particularly long time in the Cathedral (admittedly, the pieces of glass blended in with the walls very well).  Furthermore, after she finished up in the Knights' Barracks, she backtracked into the Laser Light Room? what a shame it would've been if the third Temple Guard was there, considering she passed up BOTH half-Pendants? and wasted most of the time the team had left completing an unnecessary objective.  She finally figured out where to go with time ticking down, but she couldn't put the monkey together before the clock hit zero.  This is why you don't send the stupid player in second, folks.

Trivia and Records:
This is the first of only two one-Pendant runs for the Red Jaguars in The Rediscovery.  It's also the third of only four times a player fails to run through all three ice walls in the Arctic Antechamber.

Is it me, or are your temple diagrams' quality getting worse and worse? Rendering the file wrongly in Photoshop, or resizing issues with Photobucket, maybe?

Aside from that fairly trivial issue, I liked the episode and its detail - like how you put in the bad pronounciations of names by the teams at the Tiebreaker. I don't think I've ever done anything quite like that before.

Rediscovery EP: The Great Seal of the Axumite King
« Reply #7 on: October 10, 2009, 10:11:48 AM »
It's probably because I'm using GIMP on the laptop.  Photobucket never gave me the same issues, but the dithering on GIMP is murder? even worse than on Photoshop, it seems.

I know I only have 10 or so more episodes, but I might as well switch to a new file type so I can save it under an Indexed color configuration rather than RGB.
If you have seen all 120 full episodes of Legends, copy and paste this into your profile for all to see.
