Rediscovery EP: The Chinese Emperor and the Great Wall

Author's Note: This is one of the episodes in my independent project.  If you have any complaints, first thing to do is to go see the episode directory here:
Legends: The Rediscovery

Episode 71px]

The camera maneuvers through a thick rainforest to stop in front of an ancient temple.  A giant stone head next to the gate of the temple begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk appears from behind the Temple Guard door in the Dungeon and runs straight out into the foreground of the stage to greet the crowd. "Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Nice to see you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple.  The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple.  Which legend are we gonna hear about today?"

Olmec replies:
"The Chinese Emperor and the Great Wall."

"Well the legend is set," Kirk says in response, "and one of these six teams will get a chance to retrieve the Missing Stone.  Will it be:
"Adam and Sara of the Red Jaguars?" the camera pans to each team in order?
"Benjamin and Michelle of the Blue Barracudas,
"Chris and Olivia of the Green Monkeys,
"Derek and Katie of the Orange Iguanas,
"Jason and Angel of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Logan and Destiny of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass many physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "and in the end, one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  But first, they?ll have to cross the Moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today??
"Oh, look at that, the Moat?s half ice and half water! So when I say go, one player from each team will walk across the ice, climb over the ice wall and then swim through the water until they reach the other side of the Moat.  Then their partner will do the same."
"When the second player climbs out onto the deck, it's his job to run over and hit the gong." He slams down on the Red Jaguars' gong to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will be going into the next round.  Are you ready?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"But Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"Let?s get to it," Olmec replies.
"Okay," Kirk says in response. "Teams? on your mark, get set, GO!"

The teams take off and start heading across the ?icy? portion of the Moat, but there?s a clear outcome pretty quickly; the first runners on the Orange Iguanas and Blue Barracudas fall behind the first members of the other teams.  The girl on the Green Monkeys is the first to get across the Moat; the girl on the Blue Barracudas has a horrible time getting through the murky mess and over the ice wall.  The girls on the Red Jaguars and Purple Parrots get to the other side not too long after, letting their partners start making their way across.
?Looks like a close match so far!? Kirk remarks. ?Teams are all even!? The girl on the Blue Barracudas is the last of the teams? first runners to get across the Moat; when she does, the boys on the Red Jaguars and Green Monkeys are getting over the ice walls.  The Blue Barracudas are clearly last, but the other teams are mostly neck-and-neck.  Finally, the boy on the Green Monkeys hoists himself out of the water and goes over to hit his team?s gong.
?We got our first team going on! We need three more!? shouts Kirk.  A few seconds later, a chorus of three other gongs are heard.  ?And that?s it! We got our four teams!? The camera shifts to Kirk standing with the Red Jaguars, who are hugging and jumping up and down. ?The Red Jaguars did a nice job getting across the Moat.  They?ll be going on to the Steps of Knowledge, along with the Green Monkeys?? the camera briefly shows each qualifying team, holding for applause? ?and the Purple Parrots? and the Silver Snakes! The Blue Barracudas and the Orange Iguanas gave it a great effort.  They?re not going away empty-handed, we got a great gift for them for playing and here?s what it is.?
Dee reads the consolation prize:
?Look at the entertaining fun you?ll have when you strap on Moon Shoes.  Super excitement is yours when you bounce higher than ever! Don?t leave Earth without Moon Shoes, from Big Time Toys!?

Rediscovery EP: The Chinese Emperor and the Great Wall
« Reply #1 on: September 28, 2009, 12:48:23 PM »
The four teams are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the Legend of the Chinese Emperor and the Great Wall.  But pay attention, teams, because your knowledge of the Legend can bring you a step closer to Olmec's Temple."
Olmec begins to tell the legend:
"One of the most iron-willed rulers was the Chinese Emperor Qin.  In 221 B.C., he conquered many areas and became the first ruler of a united China.  However, his most famous orders were in architecture.  He had a national road system established and a Terra Cotta Army built to guard the dead buried in a giant mausoleum, but the biggest project he directed was the Great Wall of China.
" 'It going finish before I die,' declared Emperor Qin. 'You not want outsiders invade, want you?'
"Emperor Qin oversaw the entire construction, which took fourteen years, and cost millions of lives? not that Qin seemed to care.  Legend has it that the workers that died were simply buried inside the wall.
"By the time it was finished, the Great Wall of China was a 4000-mile-long defense against invaders.  According to legend, the only time it needed reconstruction was a couple of centuries later, when a series of merlons fell off a section of the wall near the Yellow River.  Most of the stones were put back up, but one of the stones washed away in the river and had to be completely replaced.  Your goal is to retrieve the Missing Stone and bring it back here."

"Thanks Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the legend. "So tell us, where is this Missing Stone?"
Olmec replies:
"The Missing Stone can be found in the Junction of the Secret Shafts." The camera zooms in on the Missing Stone atop the outside wall of the Junction of the Secret Shafts, then fades back to Kirk.

"All right.  Teams," Kirk begins, walking down the steps, "you're standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a minute, Olmec's gonna ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're right, you?ll move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance.  The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Olmec, we?re all ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
?Was the Great Wall built by: Emperor Han, Emperor Qin or Emperor Hiro???
Jason hits the marking first: ?Emperor Quin???
After a brief pause, Olmec replies:
?Correct.?
?Nice job, Purple Parrots, step down,? says Kirk, and the Purple Parrots move down to the second step. ?Next question.?
Olmec then asks:
?Which of these did Emperor Qin accomplish: A united China???
Angel stomps in, but blanks out and says nothing before a bell sounds.
?The three choices,? says Olmec, ?are: A united China, The construction of a new palace and Trading posts with Japan.?
Nobody else answers.
?Time?s up! The correct answer was: A united China.?
?All right, Olmec, next question,? says Kirk.
Olmec asks:
?According to our legend, did the Great Wall extend for: 40 miles, 400 miles or 4000 miles??
Angel rings in: ?Four hundred miles???
?Incorrect,? answers Olmec.
Logan gongs in: ?Four thousand miles???
?Correct,? replies Olmec.
?Nice work, Silver Snakes, step down!? says Kirk, and the Silver Snakes move down to the second level alongside the Purple Parrots. ?Next question.?
Olmec now asks:
?Which of these did Emperor Qin also order to be built: The Forbidden City, The Terra Cotta Army or Tiananmen???
Olivia cuts Olmec off this time: ?Terra Cotta Army???
?Correct,? says Olmec in response.
?Green Monkeys, come down!? Kirk gestures, and the Green Monkeys join the Purple Parrots and Silver Snakes. ?Red Jaguars can still get into this, we?re looking for two teams.  Olmec, next question.?
Olmec asks:
?Was the Great Wall built to: Show Emperor Qin?s power, Protect China from invaders or Make travel eas???
A stomp from Destiny interrupts: ?Protect it from invaders.?
?That is correct,? answers Olmec.
?Silver Snakes now just one step away from the Temple Games,? comments Kirk as the Silver Snakes move down to the penultimate step. ?Next question.?
Olmec continues:
?According to the legend, did the Missing Stone wash away in the: Yellow River, Yangtze River or Sea of Japan??
Destiny buzzes in again: ?Yank-see River???
?That is incorrect,? answers Olmec.
Adam stomps down and guesses: ?Yellow River???
?Correct,? Olmec says in response.
?Everyone?s on the board now,? Kirk remarks as the Red Jaguars move down to the second step. ?Olmec, next question.?
Olmec asks:
?In our legend, was the Great Wall built in: Four years, Fourteen years or 24 years??
After a moment, Jason hits the marking first: ?Fourteen years???
?That is correct,? Olmec replies.
?Purple Parrots now just one step away from the Temple Games,? Kirk explains as the Purple Parrots move down to the third level. ?Next question.?
Olmec now asks:
?Is the capital of China: Shanghai, Beijing or Hong???
Logan gongs in: ?Beijing???
?That is correct!? bellows Olmec, and the Silver Snakes hop down onto the fourth and final level.
?All right! We got our first team going on to the Temple Games!? Kirk announces as Logan and Destiny jump up and down on the bottom step with their hands interlocked. ?We?re looking for one more team; will it be the Green Monkeys, Red Jaguars or Purple Parrots? Olmec, continue.?
Olmec does so by asking:
?Is Beijing also known as: Peking, Nanking or Chunking??
Jason stomps down and answers: ?Peking.?
?That is correct!? shouts Olmec, and the Purple Parrots walk around the Silver Snakes and onto the bottommost step.  Kirk, in the meantime, appears onscreen and sneaks around the two teams to appear on the bottom step behind them as the players congratulate one another.
?We got our two teams right here!? Kirk announces. ?They are the Silver Snakes and the Purple Parrots! The rest of you guys, come on down.? The Red Jaguars and Green Monkeys walk over to where Kirk is. ?You gave it a great effort too.  You?re not going away empty-handed, we got a great gift for you both and here?s what it is.? Adam, Sara, Chris and Olivia will each be receiving a small prize package provided by Skechers.
The camera cuts back to Kirk, the Purple Parrots and the Silver Snakes at the bottom of the Steps of Knowledge. ?These two teams will be playing for the right to enter Olmec?s Temple,? she says, ?right after this!? The camera zooms in on the gongs up in the Room of Temple Gongs before fading to commercial.

Rediscovery EP: The Chinese Emperor and the Great Wall
« Reply #2 on: September 28, 2009, 12:53:33 PM »
Kirk is standing in front of the Mine Shaft between the last two teams. ?Welcome back to Legends,? he says. ?Now is the time when the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest? so let?s hear it for Angel and Jason of the Purple Parrots!? The short Hispanic girl and short-haired boy clap along with the audience. ?And Destiny and Logan of the Silver Snakes!? The camera closes in on the black girl and curly-dark-haired boy with brown eyes as the audience applauds for them. ?You guys ready to play?? Kirk asks.
?YEAH!? The players shout their reply.
?All right, then go get ready for the Temple Games!? Kirk says.  Angel and Destiny then walk offscreen in one direction, Jason and Logan in another. ?In the Temple Games, each team is competing for?" he opens a pouch and pulls out a small gold medallion to show to the camera? "these Pendants of Life.  The winning team will need the Pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through the Temple.  There are three Temple Games, and Olmec will tell us about Temple Game #1.?

Olmec begins:
?According to legend, if it weren?t for the Great Wall, it?d be much harder to get around.  In this game, you must take an indirect route through the bamboo forest while carrying an unlit torch.  When Kirk gives the signal, put your torch behind your head and make your way through the forest.  Whenever you come to two shoots, you must find a way to maneuver between or around them, keeping your torch behind your head and both of your hands on it.
?The first player to leave the bamboo forest? or the player that?s closest to the end after 60 seconds wins.?
?It?s gonna be a squeeze to the finish,? Kirk says as Destiny and Angel place the poles behind their heads. ?Let?s set the clock for 60 seconds.? The clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen. ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
The game starts off fairly close, but about twenty seconds in, Angel makes a bit of a wrong turn, having trouble squeezing through two bamboo arches in a row simultaneously.  Destiny takes the lead and makes it out with 29 seconds left.
?That?s it!? declares Kirk. ?Silver Snakes did a great job and edged it out, giving them the half Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds briefly. ?Purple Parrots can catch up in this next game, it?s worth a half Pendant.  Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2.?

Olmec continues:
?If not for the Great Wall, ancient China would have had to confront many more outside armies.  In this game, you?ll only be confronting an army of four.  When Kirk gives the signal, load your slingshot and fire a cannonball at one of the soldiers on the wall.  Then reload your slingshot and do it again.
?The first player to knock down all four soldiers? or the player that?s knocked down the most soldiers in 60 seconds? wins.?
?Let me just get outta the way here,? Kirk says, running offscreen to the right side, ?and let?s put 60 seconds on the clock.? The clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen. ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
The boys get started with launching the cannonballs, and are good shots from the start.  Jason of the Purple Parrots is incredibly lucky, knocking over his second-from-right target on the very first try.  Both players knock over their leftmost targets around the :40 mark; Logan hits the second-from-left target with 33 seconds remaining.
?These guys are both good!? Kirk remarks as the boys quickly reload. ?Two more and they can win it!? For the remaining thirty seconds, however, the boys don?t get that close for the most part.  They do have some shots which hit, but not hard enough.  At :17, Jason knocks over his second-from-left target; at :09, Logan knocks down his rightmost target.  When time runs out, a pattern of ceiling spotlights flashes to indicate that the game is over.
?All right, that?s? Whoa!? Kirk appears onscreen a bit early; Logan accidentally releases one more shot, which Kirk manages to duck and avoid. ?Both teams got three soldiers, so they each get a half Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds again. ?So Silver Snakes have a full Pendant, Purple Parrots a half, but this next game is worth a full Pendant.  It?s the third and final game.  Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3.?

Olmec narrates:
?One thing the Great Wall stopped China from being was a powerful trading nation.  In this game, you will do some trading with your partner.  When Kirk gives the signal, grab a gold artifact and run out to meet your partner at the middle of the path.  Then pass the gold treasure to your partner, who will slide back and place it in your team?s treasure box.  Then go back and try it again.
?The team with the most pieces of gold in their treasure box after 60 seconds wins.?
?This is for the Temple,? Kirk reminds the audience, ?Let?s put 60 seconds on the clock.? The clock then appears on the screen. ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
On ?go,? the players, using the handholds in the raised sides of the tracks, start to walk against the force of the bungee cords that connect them to the walls behind them.  Both teams work quickly; the Silver Snakes make contact for the first time in only eight seconds and get their first artifact in the bin with 49 seconds on the clock.  The Purple Parrots take a little while longer to complete their first transfer, getting the first piece of gold in the bin with 44 seconds left.  Jason of the Purple Parrots goes sliding back to the beginning just as the Silver Snakes meet up again for the second time with :36 remaining.
?This game takes some communication,? explains Kirk as Destiny of the Silver Snakes gets the second piece of gold in the bucket. ?Silver Parrots really got it!? Jason tosses his artifact to Angel just as she goes sliding back; she manages to catch it and puts it in the bucket with 25 seconds left.  However, the Silver Snakes score for a third time with 13 seconds to go.  The Purple Parrots tie up the score again when only four seconds remain; the ceiling spotlights flash shortly after.
?Okay,? Kirk says as he walks into the space between the tracks and peers into the treasure boxes.  As soon as the spotters unfasten the kids, they run over to join him. ?Purple Parrots got three pieces of gold, Silver Snakes got three pieces of gold! It?s another tie, so they each get the full Pendant, giving the Purple Parrots a Pendant and a half, but the Silver Snakes have two Pendants.  The Silver Snakes are goin? to the Temple!? Logan and Destiny high-five each other several times while Kirk goes to talk with the Purple Parrots. ?You guys gave it a gallant effort.  It was a tough match, but you?re not going away empty-handed.  We got a great gift for you both and here?s what it is.? Jason and Angel will each be receiving a $100 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Nestle.
The camera cuts back to Kirk standing in front of the equipment for the last Temple Game with the Silver Snakes. ?The Silver Snakes fought hard, and now we?ll see if they can make it through Olmec?s Temple and retrieve that Missing Stone,? he says, ?right after this!? The camera zooms past the Planetarium and Abandoned Cave, then stops in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey before fading to commercial.

Rediscovery EP: The Chinese Emperor and the Great Wall
« Reply #3 on: September 28, 2009, 12:54:07 PM »
Kirk stands in front of the Temple's stairs to the camera-right of Logan and Destiny. "Welcome back to Legends," he says to the camera. "The Silver Snakes have proven themselves worthy and now have earned the right to enter the Temple.  But first, Olmec?s gonna give them some information to help them retrieve that Missing Stone."
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
?You could start by climbing through the Crevasse and climbing down into the Great Chasm.  Crawl through the pit, then race into the Crystal Cave.  Pull down the correct icicle, and you could choose to go up into the Cathedral, or into the Junction of the Secret Shafts, where you can grab the Missing Stone.  If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Switch Inferno.  Hit the right actuator to go upstairs, or plow through the wall and into the Dungeon.
?There, climb up the Pharaoh?s Secret Passage into the Geographer?s Study.  Take the correct book off the bookshelf to open the door to the SHRIIIIIIIIINE? of the Silver Monkey. Assemble the statue, and you may be headed for the Knights? Barracks.  Place the sword in the correct sheath, and you could advance into the Laser Light Room.  Find the right combination to unleash the power of the laser, and swing on the rope back across the Great Chasm.  Then, pass through the Arctic Antechamber, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate.  The choices are yours and yours alone.? Olmec pauses for a second here. "You won 2 Pendants in the Temple Games.  Who's going first??
"I am," says Logan.
"Very well, Logan," replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way towards the Missing Stone.  Hidden in the Temple are three ventilation shafts that let out in the Junction of the Secret Shafts, as well as Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms.  You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple? and it'll be Destiny's turn to enter and try her luck.  If you can reach the Stone, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish.  Return through the gates with the Missing Stone in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded? and here's how!"
?   First, they?re both going to get a set of microscopes provided by Tasco.
?   If they can grab the Stone within three minutes, they?re both going to get a $250 Target gift card.
?   If they can bring the Missing Stone out of the Temple before three minutes is up, they?ll be going to Quebec City!  They?ll be staying for three days at Delta Quebec, with an indoor exercise room, an outdoor heated pool and an underground mall and they?ll be there during the Carnaval de Qu?bec.  Delta Quebec, for a prize package totaling $11,036!

"All right, Quebec City!" Kirk says, excited. "Let?s get the Silver Snakes going and out to Quebec.  Let?s get Logan ready and out in front.  Put your mouthpieces in.  Olmec, lower the gate!"
Olmec groans gutturally as he lowers the gate; the blue lights under him are turned off.
"Put three minutes on the clock." The clock appears onscreen. "On your mark, get set, GO!"

?There goes Logan! Up into the Temple!? Kirk calls out as Logan heads up the steps.  He slides down into the Crevasse, where he immediately meets the first?    ?TEMPLE GUARD! That was fast! Give?m a Pendant and go!? Logan hands over his Pendant of Life to the guard that pulled his feet out from under him, then tries the two door actuators.  The guard himself appears to be telling Logan to go up, and Logan eventually climbs up into the Arctic Antechamber (2:39).  He tears through two of the ice walls, with the one in the foreground opening the door into the Great Chasm.  He heads on into the next room and, without even reaching for the rope, jumps down into the pit and immediately tries the actuator for the Crystal Cave door, which opens (2:23).  Starting stage-right and moving around the back of the ladder, he pulls down the three stalactites, but the only door that opens is upward, into the Cathedral.  Logan looks around for a second, then climbs up and sets foot in the Cathedral with 2:04 remaining.
?He said he wanted to go right across, but that?s not working for him,? Kirk comments as Logan looks around for the missing stained-glass panels in the room.  He finds two of the three missing panels fairly quickly and puts them into place (1:51), but he has to resort to feeling the walls for protrusions to find the third.  Eventually, he gets it and puts the last panel in place, completing the window with 1:30 remaining.  The mystic pattern on the walls then glows violet and the sheet in the back of the room shoots up, revealing the ladder upward.  Logan promptly climbs up into the Laser Light Room and gets to work on aligning the sections of the laser generator.
?He?s gotta get to work on putting the laser together!? remarks Kirk as the camera shifts to him and a nervous-looking Destiny (1:19).  The camera switches back to Logan kneeling down in front of the generator, aligning the sections of the column.  With 1:07 remaining, the column?s sections are all aligned, and the generator emits a white light. ?All right, he?s gotta be moving on, and now he?s right on top of the Missing Stone! Can he do it with a minute left?? Logan enters the Knights? Barracks, grabs the sword off the front railing and sticks it in the middle sheath.  Nothing happens, but the door opens when he tries the leftmost sheath (0:53).  He heads on into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey, but before he can grab any of the statue pieces, out jumps the second TEMPLE GUARD!
?Oh! Destiny, take off!? shouts Kirk, and Destiny launches into the Temple with 48 seconds left.  She runs up the stairs into the Arctic Antechamber and through into the Great Chasm, where she reaches out for the rope and swings across the pit (0:35). ?Destiny?s gotta make up some lost time! Are these guys destined to win? Can they do it?? Destiny runs through the Laser Light Room and Knights? Barracks, then enters the Shrine of the Silver Monkey with 21 seconds left. ?She?s gotta get all three parts to the monkey and put ?em together! Twenty seconds!? Destiny grabs the base and the middle at the same time, putting them in position with relatively little trouble.  She then grabs the head, and jams it down? but we?re out of time!
?Ugh, time ran out! I knew it, but these guys were great to have on the show.  They were only a couple rooms away?? Kirk remarks. ?They still get the microscopes just for making it to the Temple, and we gotta get outta here.  Check us out next time for another great Legend of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!? The camera shows rooms such as the Switch Inferno and the Junction of the Secret Shafts as the credits roll.

Temple Run Summary
Episode 71px]

Name of Artifact: The Missing Stone
Season: 2
Layout: 5 (9 overall)
Result: Failed acquisition
Time Remaining: N/A
Team: Silver Snakes
Pendants Won: 2
Location of Artifact: The Junction of the Secret Shafts

The chances of a win were killed by Logan constantly trying to beeline across the bottom floor to the artifact.  The Crevasse only allowed entry upward, and by entering the Crystal Cave he was forced to climb the entire central shaft.  Destiny was smart enough to go across the top floor, but time ran out just as she finished putting the monkey together.

Trivia and Records:
This is the second of only two episodes where the Temple Run was postponed (the other was "The Magical Thread of Ariadne," whose run was done in Layout VIII; both episodes were started in Layout VII).
