Legends: The Rediscovery

Episode 68px]

The camera maneuvers through a thick rainforest to stop in front of an ancient temple.  A giant stone head next to the gate of the temple begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk appears from behind the Temple Guard door in the Dungeon and runs straight out into the foreground of the stage to greet the crowd. "Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Nice to see you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple.  The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple.  Which legend are we gonna hear about today?"

Olmec replies:
"The Legend of Nero?s Half-Burnt Toga."

"So, the legend is set," Kirk says in response, "and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve Nero?s Half-Burnt Toga.  Will it be:
"Joey and Megan of the Red Jaguars?" the camera pans to each team in order?
"Ryan and Felicia of the Blue Barracudas,
"Kevin and Stephanie of the Green Monkeys,
"Chris and Jessy of the Orange Iguanas,
"David and Amanda of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Lachlan and Diana of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "and in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  But first, they must cross the Moat, and here's how they'll do it today:
"In front of each team there's two bars that go across the Moat.  When I say go, one player from each team will stand on each of the bars.  They have to face each other, lock hands and walk sideways to get to the other side of the Moat.  But if either of them falls of or their hands end up loose, they gotta go back and start again."
"As soon as both players get onto the deck, it's their job to run over here and hit the gong." He slams down on the Red Jaguars' gong to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round.  Are you ready?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Mr. Olmec, are you ready?" Kirk asks.
"Ready to rock!" Olmec replies.
"All right!" Kirk says in response. "On your mark, teams, get set, GO!"

The team players get on the balance beams and either lock hands or press palms to each other? depending on which is more comfortable for them? and start to walk sideways across the Moat. ?This is tough,? says Kirk. ?They gotta mirror each other as they go across, and they know they could fall off at any time.? The Orange Iguanas develop an ever-so-slight lead for a while, but the rest of the teams catch up near the end, making it a very close match.  Nonetheless, the Iguanas do make it off the bars and hit their gong first, with the Green Monkeys and Purple Parrots following close behind.  The Blue Barracudas and Silver Snakes scramble for their gongs; the camera cuts to Kirk when the gong is hit.
?And that?s it!? Kirk declares, high-fiving the boy of the closest qualifying team. ?The Blue Barracudas did a nice job getting across, it was very close.  Going on to the Steps of Knowledge are the Blue Barracudas?? the camera briefly shows each qualifying team? ?and the Green Monkeys? and the Orange Iguanas? and the Purple Parrots! Red Jaguars and Silver Snakes did a great effort too.  We got a great gift for them both for playing and here?s what it is.? Joey, Megan, Lachlan and Diana will each be receiving a watch provided by Armitron.

Rediscovery EP: Nero's Half-Burnt Toga
« Reply #1 on: August 26, 2009, 08:15:48 PM »
The four teams are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the Legend of the Nero?s Half-Burned Toga.  Pay attention, because your knowledge of the Legend can bring you a step closer to Olmec's Temple."
Olmec begins to tell the legend:
"One of the worst disasters of ancient history was the Great Fire of Rome.  In 64 A.D., the fire started around the Circus Maximus, destroying many wooden houses and sweeping through the Temple of Jupiter and the Emperor?s Palace.  For days on end it burned, but how did it begin? Legend has it that a certain man started and then watched the fire from a hideout on the outskirts of town.
" 'This is perfect!' Emperor Nero shouted, watching the fire burn while playing his fiddle. 'Soon I?ll be able to start building my new, bigger, better palace.'
"The fire raged on and on, and when things looked to have died down on the fifth day, Nero rushed back into town to where his old palace once stood, but the fire resurged.  His toga was burnt in the process, forcing him to rip off the section that had caught fire before he left to his hideout again.  The fire was finally gone after the sixth day, and Nero?s Half-Burnt Toga made its way to the Temple.  Your task is to find it and bring it back here."

"Thank you Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the legend. "So tell us, where is the Half-Burned Toga?"
Olmec replies:
"The Half-Burnt Toga can be found in the Switch Inferno." The camera zooms in on Nero's Half-Burnt Toga hung from an actuator in the back of the room, then fades back to Kirk.

"Teams," Kirk begins, walking down the steps, "you're now standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a minute, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, stomp down on that ancient marking in front of you.  If you're right, you?ll move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance.  The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Olmec, we?re ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
?Was Nero an emperor of: Greece, Rome or China??
Stephanie hits the marking first: ?Greece???
?Incorrect,? answers Olmec.
Ryan buzzes in: ?Rome.?
?Correct.?
?Nice job, Blue Barracudas, step down,? says Kirk, and the Blue Barracudas move down to the second step. ?Next question.?
Olmec now asks:
?According to our legend, which of these disasters did Nero create???
Chris gongs in: ?A? really big fire???
?Correct,? Olmec answers.
?Orange Iguanas, nice job, step down!? Kirk says, and the Orange Iguanas also step down. ?Olmec, next question.?
Olmec asks:
?Did the fire start at the: Colosseum, Emperor?s Palace or Circus Maximus??
Amanda rings in: ?Colosseum???
?Incorrect.?
Felicia stomps down and guesses: ?Circus Maximus???
?That is correct.?
?Blue Barracudas now just one step away from the Temple Games!? remarks Kirk as the Blue Barracudas move down to the third level. ?Next question, Olmec.?
Olmec asks:
?Did the Great Fire of Rome rage in: 4 B.C., 64 B.C. or 64 A.D.??
Stephanie rings in: ?Um? 64 A.D.???
?Correct,? replies Olmec, and the Green Monkeys move down to the second step.
?Purple Parrots can still get into this,? Kirk says. ?This match is heating up.  Olmec, next question.?
Olmec then asks:
?According to our legend, did Nero create the fire: To do away with criminals???
A stomp from Ryan interrupts Olmec: ?He? um? because he wanted to build a new castle???
There is a pause.
?THAT IS CORRECT!?
?Olmec had to think about it, but we got our first team going on to the Temple Games!? Kirk announces as the Blue Barracudas jump down onto the second step and begin to celebrate. ?We?re still looking for one more team; who?s it gonna be? Next question.?
Olmec continues:
?Did the fire rage for: Three days, Six days or Forty days??
After a second, Amanda buzzes in: ?Six days???
?Correct.?
?Purple Parrots on the board!? comments Kirk as the Purple Parrots move down to the second step. ?This looks like anybody?s game.  Next question.?
Olmec now asks:
?According to the legend, which of these instruments did Nero play???
Kevin cuts Olmec off: ?The fiddle.?
?That is correct,? Olmec answers, and the Green Monkeys move down to the penultimate level.
?Green Monkeys are now just one step away from the Temple Games,? explains Kirk. ?Olmec, continue.?
Olmec does so by asking:
?Were houses in Ancient Rome made out of???
Stephanie interrupts this time: ?Um? Clay???
?That is not one of the three choices,? replies Olmec. ?The three choices are: Straw, Wood or Bricks.?
Amanda stomps down and guesses: ?Wood???
?That is correct,? says Olmec in response.
?Purple Parrots now just one step away from the Temple Games!? says Kirk as the Purple Parrots also step down to the third level. ?Next question.?
Olmec asks:
?In our legend, which of these buildings was also destroyed in the fire: The Pantheon, The Colosseum or The Temple of Jupiter??
After a bit of a pause, Kevin hits the marking first: ?The? Temple of Jupiter.?
?THAT IS CORRECT!? bellows Olmec, and the Green Monkeys hop down onto the bottom level next to the Blue Barracudas.  Kirk runs up the middle of the step and stops and turns once he?s behind the qualifying teams.
?That?s it! We?ve got our two teams!? he announces. ?The Blue Barracudas and the Green Monkeys! They?re both going on to the Temple Games! The rest of you guys, come down here.? The Orange Iguanas move down another step; the Purple Parrots walk over to where Kirk is. ?You both gave it a great effort.  We got a nice gift for you all and here?s what it is.? Chris, Jessy, Amanda and David will each be receiving a copy of The Ant Bully on DVD.
The camera cuts back to Kirk with the Blue Barracudas and the Green Monkeys at the bottom of the Steps of Knowledge. ?These two teams will be playing for the right to enter Olmec?s Temple,? he says, ?right after this!? The camera zooms in on the Moat and the slender bars there before fading to commercial.

Rediscovery EP: Nero's Half-Burnt Toga
« Reply #2 on: August 26, 2009, 08:17:18 PM »
Kirk is standing in front of the Crevasse between the Blue Barracudas and the Green Monkeys. ?Welcome back to the Legends,? he says. ?Now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, so let?s hear it for Kevin and Stephanie of the Green Monkeys!? The hazel-eyed boy and the brunette girl clap along with the audience. ?And Ryan and Felicia of the Blue Barracudas!? The short-haired Asian boy and redheaded girl with glasses high-five as the audience applauds.
?You guys ready to play?? Kirk asks.
?YEAH!? the players shout as a reply.
?Good, then why don?t you go get ready for the Temple Games, here and over there,? Kirk says, gesturing offscreen in different directions, and the players then walk offscreen in the directions in which he was pointing. ?In the Temple Games, each team is competing to win?" he opens a pouch and pulls out a small gold medallion to show to the camera? "Pendants of Life.  The winning team will need those Pendants to protect them from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through the Temple.  There are three Temple Games, and Olmec: Will you tell us about Temple Game #1??

Olmec begins:
?According to our legend, the Roman Emperor Nero set fire to his capital city, but in this game, you will stop a fire in progress by removing the flames.  When Kirk gives the signal, jump up, grab a flame symbol off the ceiling, and come back down to place it in your bin.  Then, jump back up and do it again.
?The first player to grab all the flame symbols? or the player that grabs the most flame symbols in 60 seconds? wins.?
The camera shows Kirk standing in front of the equipment for the Temple Game. ?I hope our players are all fired up,? Kirk says. ?Let?s put 60 seconds on the clock.? The clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen, ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
Both Felicia and Stephanie jump up and try to get the first flame symbols; Felicia brings down her first with 54 seconds remaining, while Stephanie is a few seconds behind.  However, Felicia ends up having some trouble jumping up high enough again, so Stephanie begins to take the lead, which she maintains for the remainder of the game.  Stephanie brings down the tenth and final flame symbol with time ticking down, but time runs out just before she can put it in the bin.  A pattern of ceiling spotlights flashes when time runs out.
?All right, that?s it!? Kirk announces, running over to check things out. ?Green Monkeys put in their last fire just as time ended.  They get the half Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds. ?Blue Barracudas can catch up in the next game, it?s worth a half Pendant.  Olmec, tell us about it.?

Olmec continues:
?It took a long time to put out the fire, but in this game, you will help time pass a lot quicker.  When Kirk gives the signal, climb on the wheel and adjust your weight to make the wheel spin.  When it makes one full rotation, it means one hour has passed.  The player who passes the most time in 60 seconds wins.?
?So they?re? making hours go by in a minute??? Kirk says. ?I better not think about this or my head?s gonna hurt.  Let?s put 60 seconds on the clock.? The clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen. ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
The game starts out virtually neck-and-neck, but about halfway through, Kevin falls off the wheel.  He gets up and keeps going as Ryan falls off for the first time with about 18 seconds left, but with only six seconds to go, Kevin falls a second time.  The ceiling spotlights flash not too long after, and Kirk runs over to check the scoreboards.
?All right, time?s up! Come on down here!? Kirk says, gesturing to the players and then to the scoreboards. ?Green Monkeys got 10 hours, but Blue Barracudas got 11, giving them the half Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds again. ?So it?s all tied up, a half Pendant apiece, but this next game is worth a full Pendant.  Olmec, tell us.?

Olmec narrates:
?The Great Fire of Rome raged through several key locations.  On the wall above you are the names of four buildings it destroyed: Circus Maximus, Temple of Jupiter, Temple of Vesta and Nero?s Palace.  When Kirk gives the signal, load the slingshot and shoot a fireball, and your partner will catch the ball and stick it on the first location.  Once you?ve covered a location, it?s been burned down, and you can climb up and try to destroy the next building.
?The first team to burn down all four buildings? or the team that?s further along after 60 seconds? wins!?
?This is for the Temple,? Kirk explains. ?Whoever wins goes to the Temple, if it?s a tie, it goes to a tiebreaker.  Let?s put those 60 seconds on the clock.? The clock then appears onscreen. ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
The girls on each team are rather poor shots; the Blue Barracudas cover ?Circus Maximus? with 50 seconds remaining, but the Green Monkeys don?t do the same until 42 seconds are left.  The Barracudas also cover ?Temple of Jupiter? first, with 37 seconds to go; the Monkeys only even the score again at the :25 mark.
?This game?s tough; they gotta aim at their partner, and it?s tough,? Kirk explains as both teams are working on covering ?Temple of Vesta.? The Barracudas cover ?Temple of Vesta? with 21 seconds left. ?Blue Barracudas need just one more to go to the Temple!? The first shot Felicia fires at Ryan near the top of the wall is a lucky one, and Ryan covers ?Nero?s Palace? with ten seconds left.
?All right, that?s it! C?mon down n? over here, guys!? Kirk announces; the players go in to meet him at different rates. ?Blue Barracudas got all four places burned with ten seconds left, so they get the full Pendant, giving them a Pendant and a half? they?re going to the Temple!? Ryan and Felicia hug briefly as Kirk goes to talk with the Green Monkeys. ?Green Monkeys gave it a great effort too.  We got a nice gift for them both and here?s what it is.? Kevin and Stephanie will each be receiving Transformers: Cybertron Optimus Prime and Megatron action figures.
The camera cuts back to Kirk standing between the Blue Barracudas in front of the equipment for the third Temple Game. ?We?ll see if the Blue Barracudas can make it through Olmec?s Temple and retrieve Nero?s Half-Burned Toga,? he says, ?right after this!? The camera pans across the outside wall of the Temple as it fades to commercial.

Rediscovery EP: Nero's Half-Burnt Toga
« Reply #3 on: August 26, 2009, 08:17:43 PM »
Kirk stands in front of the Temple's stairs to the camera-right of Ryan and Felicia. "Welcome back to Legends," he says to the camera. "Felicia and Ryan have proven themselves worthy and now have earned the right to enter the Temple.  But first, Olmec?s gonna give them some information to help them retrieve that Nero?s Half-Burned Toga."
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
?You could start by climbing through the Crevasse and climbing down into the Great Chasm.  Crawl through the pit, then race into the Crystal Cave.  Pull down the correct icicle, and you could choose to go up into the Cathedral, or into the Junction of the Secret Shafts.  If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Switch Inferno, where you can grab the Half-Burnt Toga of Nero.  Hit the right actuator to go upstairs, or plow through the wall and into the Dungeon.
?There, climb up the Pharaoh?s Secret Passage into the Geographer?s Study.  Take the correct book off the bookshelf to open the door to the SHRIIIIIINE? of the Silver Monkey.  Assemble the statue, and you may be headed for the Knights? Barracks.  Place the sword in the correct sheath, and you could advance into the Laser Light Room.  Find the right combination to unleash the power of the laser, and swing on the rope back across the Great Chasm.  Then, pass through the Arctic Antechamber, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate.  The choices are yours and yours alone.? Olmec pauses for a second here. "You won 1 ? Pendants in the Temple Games.  Who's going first??
"I am," says Ryan.
"Very well, Ryan!" replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way towards the Toga.  Hidden inside the Temple are three ventilation shafts that let out in the Junction of the Secret Shafts, as well as Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms.  You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple? and then it'll be Felicia's turn to enter and try her luck.  Hidden somewhere in the Temple is the other half of your Pendant.  If you can find it and you're carrying the other half, you will get an extra life.  If you can reach the Half-Burnt Toga, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish.  Return through the gates with the Toga in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded? and here's how!"
?   For just getting into the Temple, they?re both going to get a set of microscopes courtesy of Tasco.
?   If they can reach the Toga within three minutes, they?re also going to get a Nintendo video game chair.
?   And if they can get the Toga out of the Temple before 3 minutes is up, they?ll both be going to the Bahamas! The Bahamas Princess Resort, on exciting Grand Bahama Island, offering tennis, swimming and international entertainment.  Fun for the whole family! Bahamas Princess Resort, for a prize package totaling $10,874!

"Let's get the Blue Barracudas on the way to the Bahamas!" Kirk says before turning to Ryan. "Ryan, let's get you out in front over here.  Mouthpieces in.  Put three minutes on the clock." The countdown clock appears in the corner of the screen. "Lower the gate, Olmec!"
Olmec groans gutturally as he lowers the gate; the blue lights under him are turned off.
"On your mark, get set, GO!"

?There goes Ryan, up into the Temple!? declares a voice-over as Ryan runs up into the Arctic Antechamber. ?He?s got a Pendant and a half, how far can that take him?? Ryan runs through the first two ice walls, opening the door leading down into the Crevasse with the second and promptly climbing down without breaking down the last ice wall (2:47). ?He?s down into the Crevasse, where he can go anywhere: left, right?? Ryan crawls through the ledges and makes his way across into the Great Chasm using the lower crawl tube; he then latches onto the back wall and climbs up so he can hoist himself onto the stage-left rock ledge in the room.  He then tries both door actuators up there (2:22). ?He tries the Laser Light, that?s not open.  He tries the Dragon?s Lair, and that IS open! He?s movin? on!? Ryan crawls through into the Cathedral, where he has to find the missing pieces of glass to finish the stained-glass window.  He finds two of the three pieces of glass on the walls pretty easily, but finding the third requires another ten seconds.  When he puts the last piece on the window with 2:04 remaining, the mystic pattern on the walls glows violet and the sheet-door blocking off the ladder in the back of the room flies up, revealing the first TEMPLE GUARD!
?Temple Guard! He?s gotta give him the Pendant so he can move on!? shouts the voice-over, but as Ryan hands over his Pendant of Life, the commentary switches to live. ?Two minutes! Two-minute warning!? Ryan climbs up the ladder into the Laser Light Room and kneels down in front of the laser-emitting column, but out jumps the second TEMPLE GUARD!
?Oh, another Temple Guard! Go Felicia!? Kirk shouts, sending Felicia into the Temple with 1:47 to go.  She starts up in the Arctic Antechamber, goes down into the Crevasse and heads through into the Great Chasm, where she has trouble climbing the wall (1:28).   She finally makes it onto the rock ledge with 1:05 left, then goes through into the Cathedral and climbs up the ladder into the Laser Light Room, passing up a half Pendant on the back wall in the process. ?She?s running short on time, but she?s gotta put the laser together!? Felicia works fast with aligning the sections of the column; she completes the objective with 47 seconds left, lighting up the laser dome and opening the door into the Knights? Barracks.  Felicia looks around for a second before taking the sword and putting it in the middle sheath, which happens to be the correct one.
?She?s only one room away! She?s into the Shrine of the Siiiiiiiilver Monkey!? Kirk declares as Felicia enters the Shrine with 38 seconds left.  She goes to the back of the room and grabs all three pieces of the statue in one sweep, only to fumble everything but the base in the middle of the room.  She takes the base and puts it on backwards, trying to put the torso on so it fits before she realizes her mistake.  She turns both pieces around and puts the head in, jamming it down with fifteen seconds on the clock. ?This is gonna be close, she?s just gotta get in the room and they got the video game chairs!? Felicia looks around, taking a second to notice that the door leading down into the Switch Inferno is in fact open.  She climbs down and, with eight seconds remaining, grabs the HALF-BURNT TOGA!
?She?s got it! All the doors are open!? Kirk says; Felicia has to wait for the doors into the Junction of the Secret Shafts to open.  She runs across and hoists herself up into the tunnel leading into the Crystal Cave? but we?re out of time!
?Oh! She was so close, but time stopped her in the Room of the Secret Shafts!? remarks Kirk. ?They both did great, Ryan cleared out a nice path.  They both get the microscopes and the video game chairs, and we gotta get outta here.  Check us out next time for more Legends of the Hidden Temple! Buh-bye!? The camera shows details of rooms such as the Cathedral and the Knights? Barracks as the credits roll.

Rediscovery EP: Nero's Half-Burnt Toga
« Reply #4 on: August 26, 2009, 08:22:58 PM »
Temple Run Summary
Episode 68px]

Name of Artifact: Nero's Half-Burnt Toga
Season: 2
Layout: 5 (9 overall)
Result: Did not escape in time
Time Remaining: N/A
Team: Blue Barracudas
Pendants Won: 1.5
Location of Artifact: The Switch Inferno

Both players had their difficulties or bad moves, but neither player was horrible.  Ryan failed to try all three ice walls in the Arctic Antechamber and had a little trouble in the Cathedral; Felicia had a hard time climbing the walls in the Great Chasm and tried assembling the monkey backwards after fumbling with the three pieces.  She eventually made it to the Toga with nine seconds left, however.

Trivia and Records:
Ryan was the second of only four players that failed to try all three ice walls in the Arctic Antechamber. (On a personal note, this is the first appearance of Blue vs. Green at the Temple Games since I returned to the forum; the last episode I wrote before leaving? "The Torch of Fujiwara no Nobuyori"? was also Blue vs. Green.)
