I didn't like the Treasure Room much.  When you think about it, it was basically a second Heart Room.

After watching some of the old season 1 episodes again, I think I have changed my perspective on the most pointless room in the temple.

I agree that the Treasure Room is definitely the most pointless room in the temple. Its basically the Heart Room with an actuator disguised as a treasure chest. Its sad that this room was used for five different layouts on the show, and was used successfully only one time.

Even when the contestants did try to use the chest, it would never allow them go down anyways. Also, the chest was only useful for the contestants that were traveling towards the Shrine route for an artifact. If the contestants were traveling towards the Observatory/Heart Room, there was no point in opening the chest.

Sorry for the year old bump. I have been wandering this board lately and this thread interested me after rewatching some old episodes.

How about an honorable mention for The Lightning Ball Room? I don't think I ever saw anyone do that room's objective as a little kid, but I saw it was used a couple times on Youtube. All you do is plug in four cords into the lightning ball's base to enter The Shrine of the Silver Monkey. Pretty pointless room if you ask me.

True, but I felt like saying The Lightning Ball Room since no one has mentioned it yet. I will say that the true pointless room has to be a tie between The Heart Room and The Room of the Golden Idols. For The Heart Room, all you do is hit a button and hope it takes you to a new room. As for The Room of the Golden Idols, I think only one time a player ever hugged an idol (and that was a winning episode; can't think of it on the top of my head). The Torch Room and Pirate Cove were pointless too.

Well, I still stand by the Treasure Room being the most pointless, but the only reason I think it's more pointless than the Heart Room is because the Heart Room was already there for most of the season— why have an equally simple room next to it? The Season 1 Observatories and Throne Room were just as bad, though, by virtue of the fact that their "objectives" required no skill, no chance and no time consumption.

On the other hand, I'd say rooms like the Room of Golden Idols, the Treasury of Golden Orbs and just about every room below them fall under "wasted potential." They weren't inherently bad concepts (except for the Spider's Lair, of course), but because of the paths that were designed, the actual objective was barely ever used for the Room of Golden Idols, and we barely got to see how hard it could be to navigate up through the Swamp or whatever.  Rooms like the Treasury and the Bamboo Forest were better concepts for offering more of a challenge, in my opinion, but apparently they were too good to last, meaning the Holes of Python was probably the only well-designed, well-thought-out and (close-to-)well-used room in that entire pillar in Season 1. :(

I usually discount the pit rooms because they tend to involve either a critical choice of paths, some form of navigation (at least the wall climbing required a bit of skill) or an actual objective, but it's a shame the Troubled Bridge didn't have some sort of hindrance like the bottom half of the room.  It's not enough to make me really write off the divided pits as bad rooms, per se, but it does bug me a little in hindsight...

I believe it was, "John Sutter and the Map to the Lost Gold Mine."

EDIT: Fixed quote.
