Title: Kirk's Fogg-Ups - What are your favorites?
Post by: The Mandarin Hand on June 25, 2006, 04:09:11 PM
The guy couldn't remember Temple Room names to save his life.

"The Jort Court Jester's Room" is a classic, as are "The Room of the Shrine of the Silver Monkey," "The Temples of the Tombs of the Ancient Kings," and "The Room of the Chamber of the Sacred Markers."

My favorite, though?  Calling the Troubled Bridge "The Stairs."

Also, "The Temple of the Ancient Kings" and "The Ledge of Size." He said both of those in the SAME temple run! (Map to the Lost Gold Mine)

He didn't only mess up on the room names, though--there were always gems sprinkled throughout the episode ("Dreaded Temple Games" comes to mind). Also, we can't forget the now-somewhat-famous quote, "The Key to this Game is... the Key."

I've always called them "Fogg Quotes," but I love your title, "Fogg-Ups." I'll have to start using that term more often now.

Meh, it's something I've been doing on my site for a while.  Looking back, one of the worst Fogg-Ups (well, set of) occurred during 'The Leopard-Skin Cloak of Annie Oakley', an episode that I feel was the first appearance of the Room of the Secret Password, for Kirk made three errors on the name of the room one right after the other:
- "The Secret Passage Cabinets"
- "Cabinets of the Secret Passage"
- "Secret Password"

However, out of all the runs I've seen, 'Lawrence of Arabia's Headdress' has the most incorrect Temple Room namings by far, with a whopping SIXTEEN.
- "Sir Lawrence Arabia's Headdress"
- "Treasure Island, I love it."   (The Grand Prize was a vacation to the Cayman Islands)
- "The Royal Gong Room"
- "The Troubled Bidge"
- "The Light Wheel" (the Celestial Lights)
- "The Room of the Columns"
- "The Fallen Columns"
- "The Columns"
- "The Room of the Fallen Columns"
- "The Throne"
- "The Golden Orbs"
- "The Room of the Golden Orbs"
- "The Well Room"
- "The Snake"
- "The Holes of the Python"
- "He's gotta climb that mountain."   (the Wall Climb portion of the Wheel Room)

All the times he misnames a team.

"Red Monkeys"
"Green Snakes"
"Red Iguanas"

How Kirk pronounces jaguar "jag-wire" & how Olmec pronounces pharoh "phay-roh". Those 2 have my whole family going nuts.

In "The Ruby Earring of Benzibab", when Kevin is running across the Pit of the Pendulum, Kirk says "he has the watch!" Does this mean that this episode was filmed the same day as "The Good-Luck Watch of Empress Eugenie"? I've wanted to e-mail nicklegends about this, so he could put it in his website (The King's Storeroom), but I didn't want to give away personal information, like my name & stuff, but now that nicklegends is able to see this, it's all settled.

This is even an Olmec-Up. Out of all the times trying to name the Bamboo Forest in "The Stolen Arm of Shiva", it was only right once, by Olmec. In the Steps of Knowledge, after the legend, Olmec called it the Bamboo Swamp. Kirk kept calling it the Swamp. Olmec got it right during the Temmple explanation.

Just for reference, you don't need to share a word of personal information with me if you want to submit something to the site. The single thing you DO need is an alias of sorts to go by. Some people choose to give their names, others (like "El Short Guy") simply choose a different name so they can be identified. E-mail me if you'd like to "officially" submit that to the site.

This isn't a Fogg-Up, but it was funny.

*second temple game (Tina [Silver Snakes] vs. Maria [Red Jaguars] in the pushing the boulder up the wet ramp to block the volcano with their backs game) in The Pendant of Kamehameha. Here's the scene*

*both are almost at the top*

*Maria slips to the bottom*

Kirk: OHHHHHHH What a gnarely fall!

*Tina gets her boulder to block the volcano*

Kirk: *after the game to Maria* Wow, awesome splash there.

Kirk also had a tendency to make the contestents feel absolutely terrible at the end of a game that was already embarrassing for them. If a contestant slipped down the ramp, he'd always go on and on about "Oh, you were SO close, but you just had to slip down... You almost got to the top, but you lost your footing. That's TOO BAD..."

I don't know if Kirk was trying to make them feel bad, but what he said made me feel sorry for the kids!

"The Observation Tower"

"The Shrine of the Three Silver Monkeys"

"The Temple of the-"

Those were all in the Pendant of Kamehameha. He didn't finish the last one, because the Temple guard came in as he was speaking, about to call it The Temple of the Ancient Kings.

- "The Observation Tower"
- "The Three Idols"
- "The Shrine of the Three the Silver Monkey"
- "She's gotta put the head together."
- "The Torch Room" (The Pirate's Cove)

That's what I have from the Pendant of Kamehameha episode.

There was an episode recently that featured the Green Monkeys and the Silver Snakes. The Green Monkeys won the final temple game, and Kirk was trying to console the Snakes. He then called them the Silver Monkeys, and announced their parting gift. It just goes to show you how little Kirk knew about the show he hosted for three years.

I gotta go with the good ol' "The Center of the Room." Totally made no sense.... woulda made sense if he said temple instead of room, but whatever.

Also, i gotta give credit to "The Leopard-Skin Cloak of Annie Oakley" because  as someone posted in here before me, Kirk murdered The Room of the Secret Password. It was like "Now she's in the Room of the Secret Passage Cabinets!.... Cabinets of the Secret Passage!....Password..." Also, i think this was the only episode in season 2 in which someone completed the objective of the Room of the Secret Password. It's weird cuz Chandra opens the cabinet and the password isn't on a tablet, it's actually written on the cabinet. Also, she says the same password twice, loud and clear both times, and the door to the shrine opens on the second time.....just thought that stuff was weird. :D

Wow, you're right! That was the only episode in the Second Season where the objective was completed in that room. That means it was completed even less than the mysterious Lightning Ball Room... Wow, I had never noticed that...

OMG! Even though i pointed that out.... i didn't even notice it was completed lees than the stupid Lightning Room objective! *gasp*

I gotta love "The Leopard-Skin Cloak of Annie Oakley" though. <3 Truly an episode dominated by the Purple Parrots! It's one of my favorites, even if they didn't win. I think it's a pretty exciting loss... they coulda won if Chandra just would've taken the shaft-to-shrine ladder. Nick woulda had enough time to figure out the King's Storeroom objective (he stuck the key in the railing at the front of the room.... not bright... but i'll give him a break...) It woulda been a close finish though because like 25 seconds coulda been saved. However, if Chandra never took the elavator, then the passwords never would've been completed at all! *gasp again*

Ooooh, more notes about that episode. Nick runs into the Mineshaft and can't take the elevator because it's not back down yet. Also, Chandra runs in front of the camera on her way back to Kirk at this point.  :D

Not exactly a Fogg-up, but of the same ilk.

In the Mysterious Manuscript of Mary Shelley (thanks for the upload BTW), after Olmec's description of the third temple game, Kirk goes "Oh, I've played this game before. It's called Ring Around the Monster!"

Silence.

Kirk musta felt like an idiot after that bomb.

Kirk also had a good one in another episode... I forgot which it was, but it was the game where the players had to swing out on trapezes to transfer objects from one to another. ''They'll have to meet each other over and over and over again... This sounds like 'Groundhog Day.'''

Heh, ironically, that Mysterious Manuscript episode we've been talking about is part of today's Nick GAS Legends doubleheader.

Another good Fogg quote comes from The Golden Jaguar of Atahualpa.  It came after the second temple game, where the teams had to slide down the chute as far as they could, and whoever had the longest distance at the end won.  The teams slid down so much that Kirk quipped, "By the looks of things, you look a bit soapy."

Whenever he would screw up things that he said in EVERY EPISODE.  For example, I think it was "The Jewel-Encrusted Egg of Catherine The Great", where he stumbled all over, "Only one team will enter Olmec's temple".

Also, who could forget this witty little gem: "Exit, stage left!"

There's the fact that he usually says "You have to get your head on straight." while they're assembling the silver monkey.

Also, someone was having some trouble with a room (I think it was the swamp), and he says "Some people never escape from the (name of room)."  When he said that, the contestants partner just shot him this vicious glare.

Something similar happened with the Dungeon. Whenever a contestant went in there, Kirk would make a comment about the skeletons, calling them former contestants. Also, in the first season, whenever someone used the ladder in the Dungeon/Mine Shaft/Well, he always said they were heading to the Pirate's Cove/Torch Room, and then immediately correct himself and say the Shrine.

ALL IN THE MUSSEL SHELL ARMOR OF APANUPEC:

Oh, he's into the quagmire, the merky quagmire (Kirk about Gator entering the Quicksand Bog)

The classic: He's into the King's Storeroom, no into the Chamber of the Sacred Markers!

GATOR-UPS:

When he crosses the Pit of the Pendulum, you see a mussel fall into the Pit. When the camera zooms in on the Armor after the Temple Run, you see a Mussel hanging loose.

In the Code Book of Mata Hari, during the third Temple Game, the teams had to go through a dragon with rubble in it. Kirk said they had go to through rubble, then added, "Barney Rubble!" There was also that episode (can't remember which one) where Kirk said that the frontrunner Shane was "Gandhi!"

Even more confusing was in the first and second seasons under the heading of Announcer; they listed both Dee Baker and Olmec! In the third season, the heading was Announcer/Olmec, correcting the confusing situation.

By the way, Dee Baker is indeed a man. I've seen pictures and an interview of him (on the SpongeBob SquarePants season one DVD). He sounds just like his announcer voice, but less hyper.

If you want some interesting Fogg-Ups, check out the Dead Man's Hand. During the first temple game, he said something to the effect of, "In Olmec's temple, there are three temple games." He also said in Galileo's Cannonball and The Golden Cup of Belshazzar that they had to return the respective items to their "rightful owner," despite the fact these people had been dead for thousands of years!

Dee Bradley Baker last year

He seems very picture shy; there's next to nothing as far as face shots go.

I forgot which episode it was, but there was that temple game where you had to throw the velcro balls onto your partner's velcro suit. The funniness wasn't during the game itself, but how Kirk described it. He kept saying the same things in a circular manner, and stumbled for the right words, and looked very stiff at the same time. It was funny to watch, but I felt really bad for Kirk while it was happening, because I knew he was constrained to the teleprompter, but yet he wanted to be a bit more creative...

Not really a Fogg-up, but the way in which Kirk pronounces "Hans Holbein" (he uses a long "a", like in "hands").  You would dare say "Hans" like that with German-speaking Dee within earshot?

Dee was also on The Journey of Allen Strange, an old Nickelodeon show that doesn't air anymore.

As for more Fogg-Ups, he had a few embarrassing ones in today's episodes. In Lawrence of Arabia's Headdress, he called the Red Jaguars the Red Jah-Guars before the second temple game. In The Royal Torque of Queen Boadicia, he called the Dark Forest the Ancient Forest. Out of all the rooms, you'd think there was no way he could mess up The Dark Forest, but he found a way to. He's also referred to the Quicksand Bog as "The Murky Quagmire" and has referred to the Court Jester's Court or the Court Jester several times in relation to the Jester's Court.

My favorite one from the "Royal Torque" episode is, "She did a great job.  He did a great job.  We all did a great job!"  I tried to riff on this in one of my fanfic episodes (we're all out of breath), but no one can come up with memorable gaffes quite the same way as Kirk.

I think the Murky Quagmire is a good name for the room, actually.

As for Fogg-ups, here's two from Lawrence of Arabia's Headdress:

Kirk: What's your favorite song to play on the trumpet?
Contestant: Yesterday.
Kirk: Yesterday?  I mean today.
Contestant: No, Yesterday, by the Beatles.

Kirk: Sir Lawrence Arabia's Headdress

Was he messing up the contestant's name during the...I think it was the battle flag ep? He kept saing Car-o-LEE-na and I thought it should have been Car-o-LINE-a but she didn't say anything...

The golden web ep had the "temple games" instead of "temple guards" mistake during the pendant spiel.

No, he's pronouncing it right. My dad used to have a girl work for him named Carolina and it was pronounced Care-o-Leen-Ah.

I'm not sure if this counts as a Fogg-Up, but it's definitely one of Kirk's most interesting quotes ever. In The Mask of Shaka Zulu, when Kirk is congratulating the Jaguars, he tells them more or less this. "You won the glider, you won the camera, you're going to Puerto Rico. You can take the glider to Puerto Rico." Why did Kirk say that? Was the kid actually wondering if he could bring the glider to Puerto Rico? What about the camera? Does it get left alone? This quote always made me laugh, because I don't think Kirk realized how rediculous he sounded.

Yes, because if a kid is going to do anything in Puerto Rico, it's fly a glider.  This was also the episode where he asked the Red Jaguars boy, "How did you do that?", when his victory really wasn't that exceptional, despite having so much time left.

It also sounded to me like he was pronouncing "Puerto Rico" like "Purreeko."

Yeah, that always amused me.

Another interesting note on the boy from the Jaguars; listen to when he describes his strategy. He says something to the effect of: "I'm going to keep as low as I can. I'm gonna go to the Squirrel, the Squirrel Run, and then into the Throne."

The Squirrel Run? I've heard the Wheel Room called a lot of bizarre names, but The Squirrel Run? Not even Kirk would say that!

That's nothing, I remember the girl from "Collar Of Davy Crockett" called the wheel room the "Hampster Wheel" room.

That brings up an interesting point. It's possible, during his briefing of the temple before taping, that the guide called it that. I see no other reason he'd call it the Squirrel Run.

I've never thought of that before. Now that you mention that, I can see that happening. After all, it's usually the crew members of a show who know the least about it.

I'm sure the crew didn't keep the names straight.  That could also be the reason why Jammin' Jon referred to the Tomb of the Ancient Kings as the "Sarcophagus Room" (Kirk might have made that gaffe too, but I don't remember).

I think I now recall the frequent Fogg-up that I used to remember all the time...intead of saying "Jester's Court" he always wound up saying "The Court Jester".

I thought Kirk called it that before Jammin' Jon did, but again, I can see that happening. After all, I think Kirk butchered the name of every room at least once in the temple.

I personally cannot stand when Kirk calls the Minshaft, the Well or The Well Room....

When you think about it, everybody calling The Wheel Room by that name is also a Fogg-Up, since it was technically called The Pit of Despair.

True, but calling it "The Wheel Room" probably helps people distinguish it from the other Pit of Despair.

It was called the Pit of Despair for selected layouts throughout the first two seasons, in conjunction with whatever objectives occupied its space. Olmec simply referred to the Pit of the Pendulum as that and "the pit" in the third season.

It's really bizarre... As I'm thinking about this, I'm realizing that there was very little logic to the Pit of Despair titling, which of course makes it difficult for the webmaster of a rather definitive Legends website...

What is a poor webmaster to do? I'll have to address that problem in the new Temple Layouts section eventually.

Kirk had a bunch of Fogg-Ups in today's episodes.

In The Mush Pot Hat of Johnny Appleseed, he mentioned that the Silver Snakes, during the moat crossing, had "no problem [unintelligible], no problem at all." Before the Steps of Knowledge, he told the teams that he would ask them a question, which is bizarre that he would make that mistake since the only questions he ever asked were season one tiebreakers. Then, before the third temple game, he said, "Whoever wins this name, game, goes to the temple." Finally, he said that the backrunner from the Orange Iguanas would be heading to The Pottery Room.

But perhaps the most famous Fogg-Up of all time occurs in The Mystical Spellbook of the Imperial Wizard. I mentioned this one earlier, but here it is again; while he's consoling the Silver Snakes for losing the game, he says something to the effect of, "I hate to say goodbye to the Silver Monkeys, but we've got a great gift for them, and here's what it is." I think it's funny that NOBODY bothered to call him out on that.

By that point in the show's run, they probably just shook their heads and said, "That's our Kirk!"

Sorry to bump this, but I felt I should get my 2 cents in.

"The Squirrel Run" trumps "The Hamster Wheel" IMO.  I mean, who keeps a pet squirrel?

Anyway, I love how Kirk completely blanks at the beginning of King Tut's Cobra Staff. "She's going up into? the room where she's gonna have to hit one of those to open the door!"

Then there's the "dreaded Temple Games" in The Golden Spider Web of Robert the Bruce, Kirk tripping all over the Room of the Secret Password in The Leopard Skin Cloak of Annie Oakley.  But I think we're forgetting this one from The Missing Portrait of Hans Holbein, and i quote The Mandarin Hand on this one:

- "The Silver Snakes Red Blue Barracudas" (the Blue Barracudas, during the Steps of Knowledge)

Talk about an identity crisis!

*Super Bump*

I found that some of my favorite Fogg Ups/Quotes were in the Milk Bucket of Freydis.

"Ohhh it's spittin'! It's a mad cow!" (The spitting cow game)

"Stop your spitting! HEY! HEY! Stop that spitting!" (After the game)

"They're wet, they're tired, they had a big battle with the cow here." (After the game)

And there was a rare Olmec flub as well.

"When Kirk gives the signal, crawl into the...crawl out to the first cube..."

I wouldn't call it a screw-up since it was actually clever, but I liked Kirk's famous saying from "The Levitating Dog Leash of Nostradamus":

''They'll have to meet each other over and over and over again... This sounds like 'Groundhog Day'... ''

I hav one that may not be a Fogg-up, but in the episode of "Henry's VIII's Great Seal", Kirk sounded very "joyful" in a sarcastic way. The way he talks is very funny because he's acting like he was on mushrooms or some kind of drug.
