Title: Rediscovery EP: The Silver Angel Wing of Elizabeth I
Post by: The Ancient Warrior on December 17, 2006, 07:38:06 AM
Author's Note: This is one of the episodes of my independent project, Legends: The Rediscovery.  More information on the project can be found by following this link. (

Episode 1: The Silver Angel Wing of Elizabeth I

The camera pans through a thick jungle to stop in front of an ancient temple.  The giant stone head at the base of the temple breaks the silence:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg!"

Kirk comes down swinging on a rope. "Thank you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple.  The rooms are full of hidden treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple.  So tell us, Olmec— what treasure is in the Temple today?"

Olmec replies:
"The Silver Angel Wing of Elizabeth I."

"So the legend is set," Kirk says in response, "and one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the Silver Angel Wing.  Will it be:
"The Red Jaguars—" the camera pans to the cheering teams one at a time— "the Blue Barracudas— the Green Monkeys— the Orange Iguanas— the Purple Parrots— or the Silver Snakes?"

"These teams'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "but in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  First, they must cross the moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today:
"In front of each team a series of four stone platforms hang above the Moat.  One player from each team will step onto the first platform when I say 'go,' then pull the next platform toward them and make their way to the other side of the Moat.  If a player falls into the water, they will have to go back and start over! Once the first player is across, their teammate must follow the same way.
"When both players are across, run over and hit your team's gong.  The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round, so teams— are you ready?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"They're ready, Olmec— are you?" asks Kirk.
"This rock is ready to roll!" Olmec replies.
"Okay teams," Kirk says. "On your mark, get set, GO!"

The teams quickly take off, the first player from each team climbing onto their first swinging platform.  The players are more or less neck-and-neck at first— until the girl on the Purple Parrots slips off the third platform and into the drink. "Purple Parrots have to start over!" shouts Kirk. "Still plenty of time, though— we're looking for four teams! Green Monkeys got one player across, and so do the Blue Barracudas! But hold on— here come the Silver Snakes, Red Jaguars with the Orange Iguanas right on their tail!
"Green Monkeys ring in," Kirk says, continuing the play-by-play, "and here come the Silver Snakes! Gotta time that jump right, Blue Barracudas!" The boy on the Blue Barracudas is having a hard time staying on the last platform, but doesn't want to miss the jump onto dry land and have to start over.  After a lot of swinging the platform back and forth, he finally jumps down onto the floor and his partner goes over to hit the gong. "Blue Barracudas are in! We're looking for one more team— I think it'll be the Red Jaguars." Just as he says this, however, the boy on the Red Jaguars misses the final jump and has to go back. "Purple Parrots and Orange Iguanas can catch up— and the Orange Iguanas ring in! We've got our four teams!"
The camera pans to Kirk standing next to the Orange Iguanas. "These guys had a tough time crossing the Moat— but they made it! Going on to the second round are the Orange Iguanas— and the Blue Barracudas— and the Silver Snakes— and the Green Monkeys!" Kirk pauses to allow the audience to applaud for each team. "Tough break for the Red Jaguars and the Purple Parrots.  They're not going away empty-handed, we've got a great gift for them for playing, and here's what it is." The players on the Red Jaguars and Purple Parrots will each be receiving a $50 Regent sports package.

The four teams are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "As the quest continues, it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the Silver Angel Wing of Elizabeth I.  Pay attention teams, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you one step closer to Olmec's Temple."

Olmec begins to tell the story:
"One of the most successful rulers of England was Elizabeth I, sometimes called the Virgin Queen.  She defended her country well, sending Sir Francis Drake to stop King Philip of Spain from invading England.  But her main concern was religion.
When Elizabeth's older sister Mary Tudor passed on, she left Elizabeth her country in a state of religious disaster.  Elizabeth was an Anglican, there were many Catholics in England at the time— partly because Mary had tried to burn all Anglicans at the stake. 'I can't go after the Catholics or they'll do away with me!' thought Elizabeth. 'I know.  I'll let them believe what they want.  They won't throw me off the throne!'
"Elizabeth was so kind to her people, that she was often portrayed as an angel.  Rumor has it that she later dressed to resemble an angel, including white makeup and lace angel wings added into her clothes.  An angel wing from one of her dresses eventually made its way to the Temple.  Your quest is to find the Silver Angel Wing and bring it back here."

"Thanks Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the story. "So tell us, where is the Angel Wing?"
Olmec replies:
"The Silver Angel Wing of Elizabeth I can be found in the Junction of the Secret Shafts."

"Teams," Kirk begins, walking down the steps, "you are now standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a minute, Olmec will ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking in front of you.  If you're first, your step will light up, and you'll have three seconds to answer.  If you're right, you can move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, one of the other teams will get a chance to answer.  The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Okay Olmec, we're now ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
"Elizabeth I was from what country: France, England, or R—?"
The boy on the Orange Iguanas hits the marking first: "England."
"Correct," replies Olmec.  So the Orange Iguanas get to move down one step.
"Next question, Olmec," Kirk requests.

"Which of these is an English law-making body: Parable, Parlor, or Parliament?"
The girl on the Orange Iguanas is the first to buzz in: "Parliament."
"That is correct," Olmec replies, and so the Orange Iguanas move down to the second-to-last step.
"One more correct response from the Orange Iguanas, and they're going on to the Temple Games," Kirk explains. "Next question, please."

"Elizabeth I was raised a follower of what religion: Calvinism, Anglican, or —?"
The boy on the Silver Snakes cuts off Olmec this time: "Anglican."
"Correct," replies Olmec, and the Silver Snakes get to move down one step.  Olmec continues:
"Elizabeth I is sometimes referred to as which of the following: The Fair Queen, The Holy Que—?"
The girl on the Blue Barracudas buzzes in, forcing Olmec to stop talking. "The Holy Queen…?" she guesses.
"Incorrect," answers Olmec. "The three choices are: The Fair Queen, The Holy Queen, or The Virgin Queen."
The boy on the Silver Snakes buzzes in: "The Holy Queen."
"Already been guessed," Olmec replied. "The answer was: The Virgin Queen." He then moves on to the next question:

"Elizabeth I interfered with the campaign of Philip II of what territory: Spain, Burgundy, or Florence?"
The boy on the Blue Barracudas stomps down first: "Florence…?"
"Incorrect," replies Olmec, and a second later, the girl on the Orange Iguanas rings in.
"Spain," she answers confidently.
"That is correct!" Olmec shouts, allowing the Orange Iguanas to move down to the bottom step.
"We're still looking for one more team," Kirk says, "but who will it be— the Green Monkeys, the Blue Barracudas, or the Silver Snakes? Next question, Olmec."

Olmec asks:
"What United State is named in honor of Elizabeth I: Louisiana, Virginia, or M—?"
The girl on the Green Monkeys buzzes in: "Louisiana…?"
"Incorrect," replies Olmec, and the boy on the Blue Barracudas buzzes in before Olmec can repeat the choices.
"Virginia…?" he says.
"Correct," answers Olmec, and so the Blue Barracudas can move down one step.
"You can still catch up, Green Monkeys, there's plenty of time," says Kirk. "Next question."

"Mary Tudor, who preceded Elizabeth I as queen of England, is better known by what name: Moody Mary, Bloody Mary—?"
The boy on the Blue Barracudas stomps down, and he and his partner answer at the same time: "Bloody Mary!"
"That is correct" is Olmec's reply, and the Blue Barracudas move down again.

"Suddenly the Blue Barracudas are only one step away from Olmec's Temple," Kirk informs the audience. "Silver Snakes, Green Monkeys, you can still catch up.  Next question, Olmec."
Olmec asks:
"During Elizabeth I's early reign, most of England belonged to what religion: Catholicism, Presbyterianism, or —?"
The girl on the Silver Snakes hits the marking first: "Catholism… uh… Catholicism."
"That is correct," Olmec replies, and the Silver Snakes move down.
"Tricky pronunciation!" Kirk comments. "One more correct response and you'll be going to the Temple Games.  Next question."

"Which of these playwrights lived during Elizabeth I's reign: Anton Chekhov, William Shakespeare, or Samuel Beckett?"
Nobody rings in for a second, but then the girl on the Green Monkeys stomps down: "Samuel Beckett…??"
"Incorrect," Olmec replies, then the girl on the Silver Snakes stomps down.  Her partner whispers in her ear, and then she guesses:
"That is correct!" Olmec shouts and the Silver Snakes move down to the bottom level next to the Orange Iguanas.
"We've got our two teams moving on to the Temple Games! The Orange Iguanas and the Silver Snakes!" Kirk announces, stepping forward to congratulate the teams. "The Green Monkeys and the Blue Barracudas also gave it a great effort.  They won't be leaving empty-handed, we've got a great gift for them." The players on the Blue Barracudas and the Green Monkeys will each receive a copy of King Kong on DVD.

"Now," says Kirk, "the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, so let's meet our team players.  On the Orange Iguanas, we have Tiffany.  How old are you, Tiffany?"
"Fourteen," replies the girl as Kirk holds the microphone up to her mouth.
"It says here you call yourself 'just the average glamour girl,' " Kirk reads a card in his hand. "Tell me about that."
"Well," Tiffany replies, "I've always wanted to be a fashion designer, and I collect old issues of People Magazine.  I've got a Shih-Tzu back home named Chi-Chi— Hi, Chi-Chi!— and I hope all my friends will be watching this when it's on TV." Kirk moves to talk to Tiffany's partner.
"And you're Sean," he says. "How old are you, Sean?"
"Fourteen," Sean replies.
"I hear you draw comic books and collect baseball cards," says Kirk. "Tell me about that."
"I've got a series in the works called 'The Need for Greed,' " explains Sean. "It's about this wanted kid thief on the run from the police… oh, and I'm from Boston and a big fan of the Red Sox."
"Who's your favorite player?" Kirk asks.
"Definitely Coco Crisp," replies Sean.
"Will the Orange Iguanas fly through this inning or strike out? We'll see.  Let's hear it for the Orange Iguanas!" Kirk shouts, allowing the audience to applaud as he goes to interview the other team.
"On the Silver Snakes, we have Makena.  How old are you, Makena?"
"I'm eleven years old," replies the girl.
"It says here you like the Atlanta Braves and you call yourself a 'Myspace freak,' " Kirk reads. "How much time do you spend on Myspace?"
"I don't actually have an account," Makena admits with a laugh, "but I go on there for about two hours a day just to see what's going on." Kirk then moves on to interview the last player.
"And Makena's partner here is Jayden," says Kirk. "How old are you?"
"Fourteen," Jayden replies.
"It says here you're a real sports fanatic," Kirk reads. "Tell me about that."
"I'm the goalie on my soccer team back in Atlanta," says Jayden, "but if there's ever a reason to call me a sports fanatic, it's my big baseball card collection."
"Really? How big is it?" asks Kirk.
"Over 700 cards," Jayden answers. "They're mostly Braves, I've got tons of Hank Aarons and Gaylord Perrys."
"Well, maybe you should show her after the show," Kirk jokes, nodding to Makena. "Let's hear it for the 'Brave' Silver Snakes!" The audience applauds for a moment, then Kirk continues:
"Why don't you girls get ready for the first Temple Game, and the guys go over there for the second.  Now," he says, facing the camera, "let me tell you what's going to happen here.  In the Temple Games, teams are competing to win Pendants of Life.  The winning team will need those Pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards when they go into Olmec's Temple.  There are three Temple Games, and Olmec… tell us about Temple Game #1."

Olmec begins:
"Elizabeth I allowed both Catholicism and Anglicism in England, but you are going to bring them into the country first.  When Kirk gives the signal, climb up the walls in front of you and grab one of the two books at the top, representing the Catholic and Anglican faiths.  Once you have reached a book, climb back down with it and drop it in your basket.
"The first player to bring down both books— or the player that's furthest along in 60 seconds— wins."
"Hey, be thankful you don't have to read them," Kirk says to the girls since they both look nervous. "Let's put 60 seconds on the clock.  Ready, set, GO!"
Tiffany and Makena begin to scale the walls in front of them, finding a quick path to the top among the many handholds.  Makena comes down with the first book in 29 seconds, with Tiffany right on her tail.  The girls automatically head back up again, but Tiffany slips this time, giving Makena a bigger lead.  Tiffany is just reaching the top as Makena comes down with the second book.
"That's it!" Kirk shouts, stopping the clock with 10 seconds still on it. "Makena managed to bring both books down within the time limit, so the Silver Snakes get the half Pendant of Life!" The audience claps for a second, then Kirk continues. "Orange Iguanas can catch up in the next game, it's also worth a half Pendant.  Olmec, tell us about it."

Olmec continues:
"Elizabeth I managed to crush King Philip of Spain's hopes of European conquest.  Here, you must interfere with each other's campaigns.  Two giant boulders rest between your territories.  When Kirk gives the signal, push the boulders back and forth to knock over your opponent's city markers while defending your own.  Remember, you may not cross the boundary between the two territories.
"The first player to knock over all five of his opponent's city markers— or the player that knocks over the most in 90 seconds— wins."
"This… means…war," Kirk says. "Let's put 90 seconds on the clock.  On your mark, set, GO!"
Both players rush forward to roll the first boulder, but Jayden gets to it before Sean.  He sends it toward the marker furthest to the left, but Sean blocks it and sends it back as the second boulder is brought into play to Jayden's right.  Sean runs over to that boulder as Jayden pushes the first one back to the leftmost marker— and knocks it down easily, since Sean is on the other end of the field.  Then Jayden makes a move for the rightmost marker and knocks it down too.
After this, the boys just continue blocking each other's shots— with the exception of Sean knocking over one of Jayden's markers.  Suddenly, the lights flash overhead to indicate that time is up.
"Okay, let's see how the teams did!" Kirk says, running into the center of the battlefield as the spotters around it stop the boulders. "Orange Iguanas knocked one marker down, but the Silver Snakes got two! Silver Snakes get the half Pendant of Life!" The audience applauds again, then Kirk continues. "It's still anybody's game, though, because the third and final game is worth a full Pendant.  Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3."

Olmec then narrates:
"Elizabeth I was forced to behead Mary, Queen of Scots— but here, you must finish the job.  Before each team is an altar decorated with five heads.  Grab one of the heads, then throw it up to your teammate, who will then slide across the ceiling and drop it in the team's basket.  The team with the most heads in their basket at the end of 45 seconds wins."
"Heads up, Orange Iguanas— you'll need this to stay in the game," Kirk says. "Let's put 45 seconds on the clock.  Ready, get set, GO!"
The girls rush over to the altar and toss the first heads up to their teammates.  Only Sean makes the catch, however, and he easily drops the head in the long basket.  Jayden catches the head the second time, but misses the basket as he slides across the ceiling.  The same thing happens through the rest of the game— Sean easily dunks each head he catches in the basket (though he didn't catch all five), while Jayden lags behind all the way.
Time runs out in a flash, and the spotters bring over the teams' baskets for Kirk to count. "Orange Iguanas got four," Kirk counts, "but the Silver Snakes only got one.  So the Orange Iguanas get the full Pendant, and now the teams both have a full Pendant! Bring out the tiebreaker pedestals!"

The spotters unfasten all the equipment on the boys, who then join their teammates at the tiebreaker gongs.  Kirk then explains the rules:
"Okay teams, it's the bottom of the ninth.  In a minute, Olmec is going to ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, hit the ancient gong in front of you.  You'll have three seconds to answer and I must accept your first response.  If you're right, you and your partner will be going to the Temple in search of the Silver Angel Wing.  If you're wrong, however, your opponents automatically win.  Olmec! What is the final question?"

Olmec asks:
"What is the crowning ceremony of a king or queen called: Legislation, Coronation, or Canonization?"
Sean rings in: "Coronation."
"That… is… correct," Olmec replies, and the audience bursts into applause.
"It was so close, but the Orange Iguanas did it! The Orange Iguanas are going to the Temple!" Kirk says, summing up the Temple Games in a few words. "The Silver Snakes came so close, but came up a little short.  They're not going away empty-handed, we've got a great gift for them." Jayden and Makena will each be receiving a $100 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Nestle. "Great job, Sean and Tiffany, but it's not over yet.  We're going to see if you can make it through Olmec's Temple."

"Olmec!" calls Kirk. "Sean and Tiffany have proven themselves worthy and earned the right to enter your Temple.  But before they go, can you give them information to help them retrieve the Silver Angel Wing of Elizabeth I?"
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
"You could start by running up the stairs to the Crypt.  Grab the book from the skeletons and pass into the Great Chasm.  You could swing across the gap and climb into the King's Storeroom.  Smash the clay pots to find the key which will lead you into the Chamber of the Sacred Markers.  Match the symbols on the right to the runes on the left and pass into the Room of the Ancient Warriors.  Place yourself in the correct armor to open the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey.  Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room of the Secret Password.  Find the tablet with the correct inscription, and shout it out to open the door to the Pharaoh's Secret Passage.
"Slide down the tunnel to the Quicksand Bog, where you could smash through to the Dark Forest.  Find the key in the tree, and you can pass into the Junction of the Secret Shafts, where you can grab the Silver Angel Wing.  Next, race across the room and you'll gain entry to the Tomb of the Headless Kings.  Attach the skull on the altar to its proper king to release the doors.  Then, pass through the Great Chasm, climb through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate.  The choices are yours and yours alone." Olmec pauses for a second here. "You won 1 Pendant in the Temple Games.  Who's going first?"
"I am!" shouts Sean eagerly.
"Very well, Sean," replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "Good luck to both of you."
"All right then," Kirk says, beginning to explain the rules. "When I say 'go,' you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way toward the Silver Angel Wing.  Be careful though— the temple contains many locked doors and dead ends.  But there are three old shafts somewhere in the Temple.  If you can find one and it's open, you can jump in and slide down to the Junction of the Secret Shafts.  Also beware, because there are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms.  If you enter one of those rooms, the Temple Guard will jump out and grab you.  You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple— and it'll be Tiffany's turn to enter and try her luck.  Now, Tiffany, hidden somewhere in the Temple are the two halves of your Pendant.  If you can find both of them and complete your Pendant, you will get an extra life.
"If you can reach the Silver Angel Wing, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish.  Return through the gates with the Silver Angel Wing of Elizabeth I in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded— and here's how!"
• No matter what happens, Sean and Tiffany will each receive a Bollinger-brand trampoline.
• If the team reach the Silver Angel Wing before time's up, they'll each win a $1,000 Toys 'R' Us gift card.
• If they can get the Angel Wing out of the temple before their three minutes run out, they'll get the grand prize— a pair of three-day vacations for four in the Bahamas!

"Sounds great, so let's see if we can get them to the Bahamas!" Kirk says, excited. "Please lower your gate, Olmec, while Sean and Tiffany get into position."
While the Temple Gate drops, Sean and Tiffany put in their mouthpieces.
"By the way," asks Kirk, "What's your strategy?"
"No wasting time," replies Sean. "We're going to avoid the Ledges if we can, and try to go down through the Chasm and see if we can get into the treasure room from there.  And if I get grabbed and taken out, Tiffany's gonna take the shortest path she can to get where I left off."
"We're about to see if that plan works," Kirk says. "You've got three minutes, Sean.  Ready, GO!"

Sean races up the stairs and into the Crypt, finding the correct skeleton on his first pull and rushing through the newly opened door into the Great Chasm.  He jumps down here, and notices one of the half Pendants is hidden in the door switch.  After quickly signaling to Tiffany, he crawls into the Tomb of the Headless Kings. (2:42) He races right over to the skull on the altar, but before he can put it on either skeleton out jumps a TEMPLE GUARD!
Sean gives up the team's only Pendant to keep going, and picks the right skeleton on his first try.  Unfortunately, the door into the Junction of the Secret Shafts won't open, so after checking to make sure he has to instead climb up the ladder into the Chamber of the Sacred Markers, Sean does so and starts completing the objective right away. (2:29) The tiles are easy to find and match up, so the room quickly lights up and all the doors open to reveal the second TEMPLE GUARD!
With 2:04 on the clock and no Pendant in hand, Tiffany rushes through the Crypt and into the Great Chasm.  Although Sean and Tiffany had agreed to take the quickest path possible when they were studying the map backstage, she now has to jump into the Chasm to grab her first half Pendant.  She passes into the Tomb of the Headless Kings, then climbs up into the Chamber of the Sacred Markers.  Noticing the open door that leads into the Room of the Ancient Warriors, she crawls through and places herself in the first suit of armor immediately. (1:39) Nothing happens, so she moves down the line pulling down each one's arms.  The third and final one opens the door, and Tiffany continues into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey. (1:22) She grabs the base and head in one sweep, but realizes she has to go back to grab the middle part.  After trying to put the head in over an upside-down middle piece, Sean yells at her to turn over the torso, then jam down the head.  It works— and we're moving on to the Room of the Secret Password!
Fifty seconds remain as Tiffany races through the door to the Room of the Secret Password.  She opens one of the cabinets on the wall and removes her mouthpiece to shout out the writing on the tablet: "LONG LIVE OLMEC!" It doesn't do anything, so she looks for another tablet— but wait! She's found a vent leading to one of the old shafts, and it's open! So Tiffany jumps in and slides down into the Junction of the Secret Shafts. (0:33) When she climbs out of the other end, she runs to the front of the room and grabs the SILVER ANGEL WING! All the doors unlock, and Tiffany makes a run for it— passing through the Tomb of the Headless Kings and the Great Chasm before having to crawl into the Ledges. (0:20) She squeezes through the gaps and quickly finds the opening leading back to the stairs, then races down the steps— and she crosses the gate with 5 seconds left! Tiffany is excited, and high-fives Sean when Kirk tells her they made it in time.
"They won it all!" Kirk shouts. "They've got the trampolines, the gift cards— they're going to the Bahamas! We had a great time here today— I know they did, I hope you did too.  Join us next time for another great Legend of the Hidden Temple!"

Episode Summary
Episode 1: The Silver Angel Wing of Elizabeth I

Name of Artifact: The Silver Angel Wing of Elizabeth I
Season: 1
Layout: 1
Result: Made it!
Time Remaining: 0:05
Team: Orange Iguanas
Pendants Won: 1
Location of Artifact: The Junction of the Secret Shafts

This was the first episode of The Rediscovery to have ever aired, and they sure picked a good one to start with.  The Orange Iguanas made several close finishes throughout the show: placing fourth in the Moat and winning only the third Temple Game to tie with the Silver Snakes, at one Pendant apiece.

In keeping with the theme of close finishes, the Temple Run was one as well.  Sean seemed to know what he was doing, and moved at a good pace— he was taken out of the Chamber of the Sacred Markers after completing the objective, with 2:04 remaining.  Although Sean and Tiffany had agreed to take the quickest path possible, she had to go into the Tomb of the Headless Kings to get the first half of her Pendant.  She didn't find the other half, but it turns out she wouldn't need it— when she found the old vent in the Room of the Secret Password, she slid right down into the Junction of the Secret Shafts and grabbed the Silver Angel Wing with a little more than thirty seconds on the clock.  When she was making her way back, she wasn't amazingly fast, especially in the Ledges, but Tiffany did cross the gate with the Wing with five seconds left, tying with "The Right Nostril of the Great Sphinx (" for closest win of Season 1.  The two definitely deserved their vacation in the Bahamas.

Trivia and Records:
Not only was this the first aired episode and first aired win of the series, but it was the only episode in all of Season 1 in which a player found and used one of the three secret shafts in the Temple.
