Title: Stop Spammers!
Post by: kamehemeha on December 04, 2006, 12:48:12 AM
A lot of times, some crazy new players who've never heard of Legends, join the board just to post spam!  Does anyone know how to stop this?

They're all robots--they won't be reacting in the slightest to topics like these, I'm afraid. The only real solution is to initiate a sort of "special code" entry, with all the distorted characters, that they use on a number of other forums. Whether this option is available or not, I'm not positive.

I've been trying my hardest to delete the spam as soon as I see it.

I hate how our spambots have to post porn links. Why couldn't they just post random crap (even though no spam is the best, lmao)

I'm doing everything in my power to stop it guys. If you haven't noticed, it is not as rampant as it once was. I'm trying as hard as I can to abolish it.

I know, that's pretty much the only non-Jester's Court spam I've ever seen.  Make a six-month-or-more member like Olmec or tss1011 a Temple Guard, maybe? More people to delete the spam crap sooner.

Not a bad idea. We do need more mod staff, I'll discuss with the current mods who they think should be added to the staff.

Just a question concerning spambots.  Do you take them out of the Temple after they spam the first time? Most of them I haven't seen them posting more than once.

Originally, that was how we dealt with spam bots, but after we realized that they would only post once, we just began deleting their threads and thus, problem solved.

I think the mods are doing a fantastic job.  Keep up the good work.

Wow, what the heck happened last night? We had three or four of them come at once.

Three spambots are out right now, let's get 'em!

(sorry, this might be a double post)

He (as in that's the user name) posted two nude shit things just today. Ugh, I hate spambots.

More spam! This one was bad.   The spammer posted a website with naked ladies on it.

Also, I'm not sure if you can do this. But maybe there cn be someway to give proof. Like example, you have to type in the name of the show.

Unusual place to spam this time.  We got a bot in (or is that "on?") the Steps of Knowledge.

I temporarily created my own forum so I could look around the Admin Panel, and there may be a solution...

General Admin -> Configuration
Set "Enable Account Activation" to Admin.

Then, you could implement Rock Quarry's idea as a confirmation email of some sort.

OR, if you can, switch to IPB. There's a feature in there that allows you to moderate the first X posts of a user, as I belong to an Invision board that has that feature turned on.

That is one choice I have not chosen yet. However, that would entail that I activate each and every member.

O.K, don't faint, but this may be the end to spam. Here is a link you can try. (Please don't ask me anything about these)

The spambots are really, really hammering us today. I've deleted at least 10 topics already... I think we may have to choose the member validation path.

I'll admit that after today I am definatly considering it.

I've noticed that lately it seems like it's only a few people posting several times in a few minutes.  I swear I've seen the same random letter patterns for thread starter names.

I'm starting to wonder if validation would be that bad of an idea. It is definatly worth a try. I'm going to see what I can do with it.

One of the moderators must have deleted it before either of you saw it, but there was spam in the heart room.
