Title: Connecticut Elementary School shooting, at least 25 dead
Post by: The Silver Monkey on December 14, 2012, 02:02:29 PM
Holy shit. Some sick wacko opened fire at an elementary school in Connecticut this morning and killed at least 25 people, the majority being students at the school: http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/12/14/15907407-elementary-school-massacre-26-dead-including-18-kids-in-connecticut (http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/12/14/15907407-elementary-school-massacre-26-dead-including-18-kids-in-connecticut)

R.I.P. to the victims and thoughts and prayers to their families.

That monster!

May the victims rest in peace and God give their families and friends peace of mind to cope through these hard times.

Very messed up stuff. It was all over the news this morning. Killing 26 people at an Elementary School, where 18 of those 26 victims were kids? What are these gunman thinking?

R.I.P. to all the victims. :(

What a madman. I'm really hoping these families can stay strong in dealing with their losses, and at the same time, I'm really, REALLY hoping for some gun control law to pass.  With the recent shooting sprees over the past six months, I think we really need it.

Yeah, I can't believe what I read when someone else posted what happened. What is wrong with some people? And this was a 20-year old kid who did it too. What a scumbag.

But the bad part is all of those kids that died. I can't imagine sending my little kid off to school in the morning and making funeral plans for them in the evening. I can't even imagine how the people who was at the scene felt. What an awful thing to happen before the holidays. R.I.P. to those victims and their families.

Seriously! First we have the Colorado shootings from this past summer, then the church shooting in Wisconsin, to a shooting in an Oregon mall, and now this. It is unbelievable how many shooting have happened in the US this year. We really do need a gun control law, desperately.

But the bad part is all of those kids that died. I can't imagine sending my little kid off to school in the morning and making funeral plans for them in the evening. That's just the worst part, this happened right before the holidays. I can't imagine how the parents of these little kids feel. I can't imagine what Christmas will be like for those families. And poor kids who witnessed such an event, talk about scarring. You just don't conceive of such a thing happening. One minute you send your kid to school, and the next minute, they're dead. And this was some 20 year old guy too. Sickening.

Wait.... Did TSM just copy all this from The Main Spam Topic? If that's so, can we remove RJF's post about Singapore celebrities? Just doesn't fit in an emotional thread.

Anyway, I'm still shocked at this, with just days till Christmas, this happens, this is like Mass shooting year. Portland mall, Wisconsin Sikh Temple, Aurora CO Theatre, and now this one. This is saddening and even broke Obama to tears.

R.I.P. again to all those dead today

I know I once predicted there'd be a big spike in criminal activity around this time due to all this Mayan Calendar garbage, but now I'm eating my words. This is a tragedy indeed. :(

Rest in peace to all the victims. What an awful incident. Yes, that guy was sick indeed. They always are, literally...

What a madman. I'm really hoping these families can stay strong in dealing with their losses, and at the same time, I'm really, REALLY hoping for some gun control law to pass.  With the recent shooting sprees over the past six months, I think we really need it.
Wow, finally. You and PPF are seriously the first Americans I have seen on the internet that don't fire back something like, "Then we should also ban cars because we have a lot of deaths caused by traffic accidents!" Like I said, the people that plan these kinds of shootings are always sick and yes, I don't think people that are mentally well would do such things; but if there isn't really an effective way to keep the guns away only from the sick people, then I think it's kinda selfish of people not to be willing to give up their guns if it means less people, including kids, dying in shootings.

I can't imagine what is going through their parents heads right now. Or what is going through those victim's peers either. What an awful awful thing to happen before the holidays. Also, apparently a 36-year old man stabbed 22 kids yesterday in China. This is crazy.  :!:

Yeah, exactly.  I've never been big on guns, though.  I'm familiar with the saying "Guns don't kill people, people kill people," but guns make it way too easy to kill people.  Man, those people comparing the gun ban idea to the possibility of a car ban are just stupid if they can even admit that most car-related deaths are accidents, but they can't see the difference between that and purposeful shootings.  Some kind of gun control law just has to be started up in Congress, seriously.

I know I once predicted there'd be a big spike in criminal activity around this time due to all this Mayan Calendar garbage, but now I'm eating my words. This is a tragedy indeed. :(

All I can say is I really, REALLY hope this is the worst of it, considering I'd sort of predicted the same thing.  If we can make it through the next week without any major catastrophe...

The mind of a school shooter or serial killer is a hard, if not impossible one to understand.  We can't humanize these types of criminals by assuming that they follow similar logic to the rest of us.  While it's true that they consciously choose to go on this sort of rampage, it's not like they go about the decision like sane people might.  Their understanding of consequences and risk might be a lot different from that of people like us.

That's the Westboro Baptist Church for ya: a cult of hatred that prefers to use their legal knowledge (yes, the "church" is led by a family of lawyers) to troll people in real life in the most despicable ways.  Yes, they're a group of heartless monsters, but unfortunately, any attention given to them only drives them forward.  It's absolutely heartbreaking to see them do things like this, but...

Just seeing "Westboro Baptist Church" in the link is enough to tell me that no good would come out of this article. If you have heard about them before, the Westboro Baptist Church is infamous for protesting certain events like the funerals for deceased soldiers. You can watch videos of them on Youtube where people actually go out to funerals for these fallen men and women and stand their ground to keep the Westboro protesters from interfering with the event. But really, what a sick and twisted following that they have assembled. I don't think they will protest at the end of the day, but it is amazing that they had to nerve to protest it. I know that the community in Sandy Hook will stand their ground though and don't let them interfere with this tragedy.

And how about this? There was another psycho in Indiana that planned to go after an elementary school in that state! That guy was arrested though, so thank goodness there.

Oh, I've heard about them before. They protest at fallen soldiers funerals for the same pathetic reasons. So disgusting and heartless, though like TAW said, if we keep feeding them attention, they're just gonna keep going even more.

Why do they think a shooting is good?  :| those weird people. That's not a very nice church if they think that. You should pray to to God to take care of these kids that had their lives taken, not praise that they're gone.

They don't think it's good.  They're just using their twisted doctine to troll people in real life, because if anyone tries to take things to court, they're all lawyers and they've been spreading their hatred just barely within the law.  It would be great if the "church" would just be recognized as a hate group as per the petition RJF linked, but I think all we can do for now is try to support that petition and hope for the best.  Any other attention only drives them forward, because they are basically doing the same thing in real life that trolls do online: hunting for attention.

...Although I am glad to know that Anonymous hacked their site.

I live within an hour's drive from Newtown and its so weird because you don't ever picture this happening in your own backyard. I also work for the Y in the after school department, so its hard to go to work now knowing something like this has happened. My coworker and I spend each day at work complaining about how a bunch of idiots go on the playground at night, smoke weed and do drugs, picking up needles so that the kids don't step on them or pick them up and cleaning the trash on the playground, and then the kids get me so mad cause they don't listen, they fight over the sports equipment, they are rude to us and one another, but on Friday I just hugged each of them and told them they make me happy to work there everyday.

R.I.P to those poor kids and the staff that put their lives in harms way to make sure the survivors could make it out safely.

Is it worth it to sign that petition? I'll be honest, I haven't signed it (not yet at least) because I fear that giving out my personal information might be bad. I don't want anyone on the internet or the government to know my personal information.

Well, I never really sign online petitions anymore. But all they usually ask for is a name and email address. I haven't checked the petition he posted though, so I am not sure if it requires more information.

And that was a nice post, TempleFan322. I am part of the volunteer group I work on in my college involves me going to a local Elementary school and help watching the kids in the after school program. These kids are different from the ones in my hometown because they come from poor families. Since this was my last semester of college, I didn't volunteer down in the school. But if I did, I would do the same thing as you did. And don't worry, I use to think the same thing of those kids too about them being brats. But I am now more grateful that I had a chance to work with them.

There are many aspects of this topic that I would like to get into, but for now, I'm intrigued by the people who are willing to commit atrocities that involve killing people in vulnerable places where we assume everything is safe is not. I don't want to offend anyone, but I do feel for the people who were killed, but a little more for the families who are related to the suspect. They seem to have it worse, knowing their loved one did something like this.

"Serial killers ruin families" is a quote I read somewhere I forgotten right now, but that is basically what happens when you do murder someone.

One aspect I'm particularly interested in is how the media is shaping it. It's errie that the news media will be willing to break down how these types of things are done so that other people with motives could do this, which I'm sad about.:

Today marks the one year anniversary since the Sandy Hook massacre happened. I hope no one minds if I bump this, but I figured it would be fitting since today is the anniversary. Thoughts and prayers go out to the victims families, still trying to cope with loss one year later. :(

Like I said before, I live just about an hour from there and it's so hard when it happens in your own backyard.

But the one thing I love is that they have build a playground for each of the kids here in CT, one for each child lost. And on the one year anniversary..... It snowed. What child doesn't loves playgrounds and snow? I'm almost 25 and I still love playgrounds and snow. I guarantee that was those children letting their parents know everything is ok when that happened. God bless them
