Title: Ironic artifact placement.
Post by: Blue Barracuda on July 16, 2006, 07:04:08 AM
Okay, we all know that the artifacts are places in seemingly random places (except for the pit, ledges, and crypt).  But are there any you can think of that were put in a room that seemed to fit?

The heart shaped pillow, for example, was placed in Medusa's Lair.  But the thing is, Medusas Lair usded to be the Heart Room.

The Mysterious Manuscript of Mary Shelley being placed in the Dark Forest.  Even Kirk said, "Of course!"

Oh, almost every single artifact had a relation to its room.

Season 1
Elizabeth the First's Golden Ship was in the Throne Room
The Golden Cricket Cage of Khan was in the Spider's Lair  (as if to follow a ''bug'' theme)
The Star of Sultan Saladin was in the Observatory (like an actual star)
The Oracle Bowl of Delphi was in the Observatory (the word ''Oracle'' suggests worship to gods, or heaven)
The Golden Jaguar of Atahualpa was in the Treasure room (it was a treasure in itself)
The Silver Saddlehorn of Hannibal was in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (both are silver)
King Tut's Cobra Staff was in the Tomb of Ancient Kings (it should be obvious why)

Season 2
The Bone Necklace of the Blackfeet Chief was in the King's Storeroom (a chief can be considered a king)
The Very Tall Turban of Ahmed Baba was in the Observatory (the highest room of the temple)
The Golden Earring of Henry Morgan was in the Room of the Mandarin hand (both the mandarin hand and the earring suggest a person)
The Levitating Dog Leash of Nostradamus was in the Room of the Secret Password (both suggesting magical powers)

Season 3
The Discarded Seal of Ivan the Terrible was in the King's Storeroom (Ivan was a ruler)
The Dried Apple Half of William Tell was in the Room of the Ancient Warriors (William Tell was a warrior of sorts)
The Lily-Crested Crown of Clovis the First was in the Quicksand Bog (the legend dealt with an army crossing over a sandbar by observing the lilypads in the water)
The Metal Beard of the Egyptial Queen was in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (both are metal)
The Mystical Spellbook of the Imperial Wizard was in the Room of the Secret Password (mysticism and passwords both relate to magic)
The Red Sash of Tokugawa Ieyasu was in the Tomb of the Headless Kings (Ieyasu was the head of a military superpower)

I just flipped through a few pages of my episode list, and those are what I found. There are surely others out there, so keep looking!

Yeah, i always thought that most of the artifact placements "made sense" in some way or another... Then again, some of them definitely seem completley random... like "the Leopard-Skin Cloak of Annie Oakley" in Medusa's Lair... seemingly random to me.

I could never understand why The Stone Head of the Evil King, an artifact revolving around thne legend of Medusa, was placed in the swamp and not Medusa's Lair.

There's a possibility the episode was planned before the second layout of the second season was made, without Medusa's Lair to choose from. It's probably the same story with the Lucky Pillow of Annie Taylor, another second layout, second season artifact placed in a room that no longer made sense for it.

The Treasure of Anne Bonny should've been in The Shrine of the Silver Monkey since it sat there for practically half the season... Or the Pirate's Cove would've made more sense (even though it was in thesame location as the Pirate's Cove, it was on a different layout)

Oh, and i just thought that "The Dragon Lady and The Blue Pearl" in the Holes of Python is pretty sensible. :P

Wow, this is a very interesting topic!

The Treasure Map of Jean Laffite (Didn't the Legend involved a swamp, since he lived by like present day New Orleans)

Just thought of another one...the water bottle from "Ponce de Leon and the Lost Fountain of Youth", which was in the Heart Room.  In the legend, the Indian said that the water was only for those who are pure of heart.

Personally, I think these are all just coincidences. I mean, we could say 'oh, (insert artifact) was a lost treasure, that's why it was in the treasure room.'

Perhaps maybe because they already HAD a stone head in Medusa's lair?

Sorry to bump this, but I was thinking maybe we could make a list out of all the ones that make sense.  And I have some to add:

The Keys to the Alhambra were in the Dungeon (I believe Isabella threw them into a dungeon when they wouldn't unlock any doors of the palace)
The Golden Cup of Belshazzar was in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (Both the Cup and the monkey being made of precious metal)
The Codebook of Mata Hari was in the Heart Room (Mata Hari supposedly could steal any man's heart)
The Golden Stallion of Ali Baba was in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (Both are animal figurines made of precious metal)
The Silver Horseshoe of Butch Cassidy was in the Viper's Nest (Another kind of animal theme)
The Imperial Purple Robe of Empress Theodora was in the Mine Shaft (When she died, Theodora was supposedly buried in her robe)
The Lost Lion Tail of Little John was in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (Yet another sort of animal theme)
The Jeweled Scabbard of Sforza was in the Room of the Ancient Warriors (I guess you could call Catarina Sforza a warrioress)

The Thornwood Gavel of Judge Roy Bean was in the Jester's Court (A Judge's workplace is a courtroom)

I figured out another one now: The Treasure of Anne Bonny.  It was taken out of the Shrine of the Silver Monkey after Layout IV and I assume they had the layout originally planned for Layout V, when the Treasure would've been in the Pirate's Cove instead of the Room of Three Torches.

Does anyone have any others to add to the list above?

The Thornwood Gavel of Judge Roy Bean was in the Jester's Court (a judge's workplace is a courtroom)
The Secret Map of the Bandit Queen was in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (bandits usually steal valuable things, more often than not made of precious metals)
The Snow Cone of Mount Kilimanjaro was in the Room of the Ancient Warriors (for it takes a warrior of sorts to ascend a mountain as challenging as Kilimanjaro)
The Mystical Spellbook of the Imperial Wizard was in the Room of the Secret Password (a sort of "written words" theme)
The Useless Map of the Chibcha Chieftain was in the Dark Forest (the city of El Dorado was supposedly deep in a jungle, closest thing to a jungle's a forest)
The Ruby Earring of bin-Zibab was in the Room of the Secret Password (in the legend, Sheba went to see Solomon to decode a secret message; I guess a secret password is close enough to a coded clue)
The Jeweled Scabbard of Sforza was in the Room of the Ancient Warriors (I guess you could call Catarina Sforza a warrioress)
The Broken Trident of Poseidon was in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (the monkey is also in pieces when a player enters the room)
The Lily-Crested Crown of Clovis the First was in the Quicksand Bog (the legend dealt with an army crossing over a sandbar by observing the lilypads in the water)
The Mummified Hand of the Egyptian King was in the Dark Forest (a kinda horror theme)
The Red Sash of Tokugawa Ieyasu was in the Tomb of the Headless Kings (Ieyasu was the head of a military superpower)
The Discarded Seal of Ivan the Terrible was in the King's Storeroom (Ivan was a czar, or a king of Russia)
The Dried Apple Half of William Tell was in the Room of the Ancient Warriors (William Tell was a warrior of sorts)
The Mysterious Manuscript of Mary Shelley was in the Dark Forest, for obvious reasons
The Bullet Riddled Handbag of Belle Boyd was in the Room of the Ancient Warriors (Belle Boyd could be considered a warrioress for running across the battlefield in the line of fire)
The Metal Beard of the Egyptian Queen was in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (both are metal)
The Enormous Feather of the Mi Lingh was in the King's Storeroom (the Mi Lingh could fly very high, so appropriately enough the artifact was in the highest room of the Temple)
The Royal Torque of Queen Boadicea was in the Tomb of the Headless Kings (since a queen is married to a king)
The Ivory Hunting Horn of Roland was in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (I guess this was a "rich, expensive materials" theme)

Here is one I came up with:

The Cracked Crown of the Spanish King was in the Observatory (both the the cracked crown and the column were made of stone)

Thanks! No sense in updating for just one addition, I'll just edit the post above.  And actually, maybe it'd be alot easier to make a final list on the top of the third page and keep editing that until I get as many as I can.

The Golden Cricket Cage of Khan was in the Spider's Lair (as if to follow a ''bug'' theme)

I'd like to note that this is a factual error. Spiders are'nt bugs. They're arachnids. Bugs have 6 legs, whereas Arachnids have 8. HOWEVER, his point remains valid because the artifact's placement is ironic because it references predator-prey relationship.

The term "bug" (according to the more commonly used definition) refers to any arthropod (excepting most crustaceans); includes insects, but also non-insects such as spiders and centipedes.

The Applewood Amulet of Emiliano Zapata was in the Viper's Nest (Possibly a reference to the popular game "Snake")

The Bonnet of Dolley Madison was in the Jester's Court (Dolley's husband James likely visted the US Supreme Court during his presidential term)

WAY too much of a stretch on the Dolley Madison one.  I think that one was put there because nothing else was put in the S2 Jester's Court.

Maybe it's a reference to the Supreme Court Case Marbury vs. Madison...

The Lost Whale Bone of Pytheas was in the Chamber of the Sacred Markers (According to the legend, Pytheas and his men kept the Whale Bone as a symbol of defeating the whale.)

The Stone Head of the Evil King SHOULD have been in Medusa's Lair...

Sorry guys, but "ironic" isn't used that well here.  It was "ironic" in The Pendant of King Kamehameha" when the artifact was what the kids needed.

Anyway, the best job of placement was The Much Heralded Helmet of Sir Gawain being in the Jester's Court.  Even my (at the time) three-year-old brother got that one.

True, if i made the topic it would've been called "Sensible artifact placement." But i didn't, and doesn't really matter cause we know what's meant.

I got one:

The Ivory Elephant of Scherazade and The Leopard Skin Cloak of Annie Oakley were in Medusa's Lair, whose objective is to place a certain amount of Snakes into Medusa's head. Animal theme of sorts.
