Title: Cave of Size or Cave of Sighs?
Post by: The Silver Monkey on July 24, 2009, 10:00:44 AM
Which do you think was the correct spelling of the room?

I personally think it was Size.

If memory serves me right, didn't we come up with another spelling of the room's name? I can't quite remember how it was spelled, but I always assumed the theory behind it was a fictional name.

The suggestions have been size, sighs, or scythes. There was even one more, but I forgot it.

I think Sighs cause it sounds a little bit more reasonable than Size.

Not only does "Scythes" make no sense whatsoever, but I also don't think Olmec's pronunciation in Season 1 was so bad as to completely omit the th sound.

"Size" could make sense given that the ledges were in some cases very tough to maneuver through.  But, I think it's "Sighs" because of the similarity between "Cave of Sighs" and "Pit of Despair."

Yes, and I was the one who came up with Scythes! I came up with it because of all the stalactites and stalagmites in the room could be referred to as scythes.

Actually, TAW, according to the Merriam Webster Online dictionary page for the word "scythe", there is a variant pronunciation of the word that leaves out the "th" altogether. Look for yourself:

]http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/scythe[1] (http://http)

It's the second soundbyte. And if you use the plural "scythes" with this pronunciation, It does sound like the Olmec pronunciation.

I vaguely remember that All 4 versions were once discussed on this Forum, I'll Investigate and see if I can unearth the elusive 4th version.

I think it was "Signs" IIRC.

Olmec's pronunciation isn't that bad. He couldn't have said "Signs".

What I meant was that the fourth proposed name was "Signs." Of course it couldn't be that.

As I said before, my guess personally is that it was "Sighs."

Oh.

I still go by "Sighs", though.

Sighs. I believe someone reported that during a closed-caption episode of Legends, it said "sighs" in the captioning.

Yeah...I think it was 'Sighs'. But it could be 'Size', since that seems to make sense, too.

'Scythes'? 'Signs'? Uh...no.

I was bored so I went through the talk page of the LOTHT Wikipedia article, and apparently the fourth one is supposed to be "Sais", an Egyptian city according to Ed. He also thought that it was "scythes". I'm so sad, right? :P

This always confused me too. I think it was supposed to be sighs because that made it sound more ominous.

Sighs because it seems to fit better, especially when connected to the Pit of Despair.

Hey all, I just thought of something interesting that I want you all to ponder

While spitballing about Legends just now, I remembered the Fogg-up "Ledge of (Size/sighs/scythes/sais)", and that got me to thinking.

What if we tried to use that Fogg-up to reduce the number of options using semantics.

"Ledge of Size" doesn't fit, because there isn't an adjective in the sentence to convey what size the ledge is.

"Ledge of Sais" also doesn't work because I doubt seriously that the ancient egyptian city of Sais had only 1 ledge in it.

"Ledge of Sighs" works because there could be an echo of sighs about the ledge.

And "Ledge of Scythes" works as well because of the whole stalactites/stalagmites thing i said eariler in this thread.

So, in conclusion, only Sighs or Scythes would've worked in both "Cave of ..." and "Ledge of ..." scenarios, and therefore could've been in the name of the actual Legends room.

Well, it's not like every time Kirk made a mistake, it was STILL grammatical.  This gem from "The Keys to the Alhambra," for example"

"The team with the most hits attached to their partner's suit at the end of 60 seconds."

I'm sorry, but "Scythes" and "Sais" still both sound like a major stretch, and I've always believed it was "Sighs" until I started seeing sites refer to it as "Size"... because which spelling would work best for the room next to the Pit of Despair? ;)

Cave of Sighs for reasons already mentioned.

Since this is bumped, might as well make a final statement. The Spanish edition of Legends of the Hidden Temple had Sabio (Olmec) name the Cave as "La Caverna de los Suspiros," which literally translates to "The Cave of Sighs."

Are you referring to a completely different version of LOTHT filmed for a Spanish audience or a Spanish dubbing of the Nick game show?
