We return from the commercial break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the two remaining teams.
“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “Now, of course, the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest. But first, let’s meet our teams.
“On the Green Monkeys, we have Cassie; she plays basketball and she wants to be a veterinarian, and her partner is Ethan; he plays baseball and he also plays the guitar—let’s hear it for the Green Monkeys!” The audience applauds for the tall hazel-eyed girl with shoulder-length black hair and the equally tall brown-eyed boy with disheveled brown hair.
“And on the Purple Parrots, we have Summer; she’s into cheerleading and she also collects teddy bears, and her partner’s name is Tyson; he plays football and soccer and he wants to be a scientist—let’s hear it for the Purple Parrots!” The audience claps for the pretty blonde-haired girl with brown eyes and the tall, black-haired, green-eyed boy.
“All right, are you guys ready?” Kirk asks the teams.
“Yeah!” they reply.
“Go get ready for the Temple Games,” Kirk instructs. “Now, in the Temple Games, we’re competing—or the teams are, at least, for…” Kirk retrieves a Pendant of Life from his pouch and holds it up to the camera. “…these Pendants of Life. They’re gonna need these Pendants to protect them from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through Olmec’s Temple. There are three Temple Games…”
“And I’ll explain the first one,” Olmec finishes. The black lights under Olmec come on and he begins to explain the first game:
“Amerigo Vespucci made four voyages to the New World, but in this game, you will only need to make one. When Kirk gives the signal, propel your boat off the dock and sail toward your destination. Once you reach it, turn your boat around and sail back to the dock. If you touch the water, you must go back and start again. The first player to step onto the dock, or…the player that’s further along at the end of thirty seconds…wins.”
“It’s a journey to the New World,” says Kirk. “Let’s set the clock for thirty seconds, please!” The clock slams down in the corner, ready to go. “On your mark, get set, GO! Bon voyage, everybody!”
Cassie and Summer each launch their boat off the dock, running into one another in the process, and they both make it to the predetermined destination with approximately 21 seconds to go. Summer has a little trouble turning her boat back around, though, giving Cassie enough time to pull ahead. Cassie manages to make it back to the dock with six seconds left on the clock.
“All right!” Kirk says as Cassie climbs up the dock. Summer appears on the opposite side a few seconds later. “The Green Monkeys made it back to the dock first, so that means they get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds for a second or two. “But the Purple Parrots can catch up, though, in this next Temple Game. It’s also worth a half Pendant—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2…”
Olmec begins:
“When his navigators accidentally sailed his ship the wrong way, Amerigo wrote a long letter of apology, which was then delivered to the king of Spain by a fast horseman. In this game, you will see what that wild ride may have been like. When Kirk gives the signal, the horse will begin to gallop. Hold on tight, because if you fall off, your partner will receive a point. The player with the most points at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”
“Ooh, a wild horse ride through the wilderness—can they hang on?” asks Kirk. “Set the clock for sixty seconds!” The clock appears in the bottom right corner. “On your mark, get set, GO!”
Neither player falls off the agitating sandbags until about halfway into the game, when Ethan falls off, scoring the Purple Parrots one point. With about 21 seconds to go, both Ethan and Tyson fall off, giving both teams a point. Tyson falls off his sandbag with about 10 seconds left to tie the game up. With only four seconds left on the clock, Ethan falls off, giving the Purple Parrots a third point. Time expires soon afterwards.
“Okay, stop the horses!” Kirk says as he runs back onscreen. “I know, it’s not easy, is it? Let’s count it up and see how we did here.” He glances back at the scorecards. “The Purple Parrots got three points, and…the Green Monkeys got two points! So the Purple Parrots get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience claps for a few seconds. “So now, it’s tied up, a half Pendant apiece. Now, we go to the third and final Temple Game. It’s worth a full Pendant of Life—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3…”
Olmec begins to explain the final Game:
“In each voyage he made, Amerigo Vespucci landed in a different place, and explored a new part of the New World. Before you stands a wall with the names of four places Amerigo explored on his voyages—Guiana, Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina. When Kirk gives the signal, one player will shoot a ball up to their partner on the wall. Their partner will then catch the ball and stick it on the place’s name. Once a place is covered, climb up to the next one. The first team to cover all four places or…the team that covers the most places at the end of sixty seconds wins!”
“Exploring new lands…this is for the Temple,” Kirk says. “Put sixty seconds on the clock!” The clock slams down in the corner. “All right…on your mark, get set, SHOOT!”
The Purple Parrots and the Green Monkeys each cover up “Guiana” in the first seven seconds of the game, even though it takes the Green Monkeys two tries to do it. The Purple Parrots cover up “Uruguay” with 42 seconds to go, and the Green Monkeys follow suit about six seconds later. For the next twenty seconds or so, no one advances any further, and the cannonballs go flying everywhere—one even hits Tyson in the head! Tyson manages to cover up “Brazil” with 14 seconds left, and Ethan also covers “Brazil” with three seconds to go. Time expires soon afterwards.
“All right, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as he rushes back onscreen. “Come on over here, girls; let’s see how we did. It looks like the Green Monkeys made it up to Brazil, and the Purple Parrots…well, they also made it to Brazil! That means both teams win the half Pendant—that gives the Green Monkeys a Pendant and a half; the Purple Parrots also have a Pendant and a half—we’ve got a tie! Let’s bring in the tiebreaker pedestal!”
A spotter wheels in the tiebreaker pedestal, and both teams position themselves behind it. Kirk stands beside the pedestal and explains the rules.
“Okay, here’s what’s gonna happen. In a few minutes, Olmec’s gonna ask you one final question. If you think you know the answer, hit the gong in front of you. You’ll have three seconds to answer, and we must accept your first response. The first team to buzz in and answer the question correctly is going inside the Temple in search of the Missing Letter of Amerigo Ves-Gucci. All clear?” Both teams nod in response. “Okay,” Kirk says. “Olmec…what is your final question?”
Olmec begins to ask the final question of the day:
“Which of these men is credited with discovering the New World: Vasco da Gama, Christopher Columbus, or Hernando De Soto?”
The Purple Parrots hit their gong as the third choice is given. “Christopher Columbus…?” Summer replies.
“That…is correct,” Olmec assures.
“The Purple Parrots are goin’ to the Temple!” Kirk exclaims as Summer and Tyson jump up and down and high-ten one another. “Nice job! Green Monkeys, come on over here, you guys. You did great, too, and you’re not goin’ home empty-handed. Here’s what we’ve got for you!” They receive a backpack from Outdoor Products.
As the prize disappears off-screen, Kirk is seen standing beside the Purple Parrots. “Now it’s time to see if the Purple Parrots can make it through Olmec’s Temple and retrieve the Missing Letter of Amerigo Vestoochy, right after this!”
The camera pans in on the Temple and zooms in on the Missing Letter as the title appears onscreen, and we go to a commercial.
