Was the artifact real?
« on: March 28, 2008, 04:01:23 AM »
There were 120 artifacts, but some were fiction, and some were real.

The point of this topic is to research which artifacts were real, and which weren't.

Put some research, a link, and your final word.

Mythical: Relating to myths, like the broken wing or trident.

Plausible: If you see the event the legend talks about, but don't actually see the artifact.

Brainchild: Real person, made up artifact

Documented: The artifact is real, and there are pictures and words to go with it.

I've been meaning to do this for a while, and I hope it teaches us something about Legends we didn't know .

The first artifact that comes to my mind is The Electrified Key of Benjamin Franklin.  It's common knowledge Franklin did indeed fly a kite with a key attached to it in a thunderstorm.  However, the legend incorporates Franklin's wife, Debbie, and Franklin conducted this experiment while he was still a young bachelor.

Wikipedia says that The Heart-Shaped Pillow of Annie Taylor was also real.  However, I've learned to take what Wikipedia says with about a million grains of salt.

The Mussel Shell Armor of Apanuugpak, as we recently learned, was also real (check several of the sources that prove that's the proper spelling).

Same with Galileo's Cannonball, since we do all know about the gravity experiment.

Update:

The Royal Torque of Queen Boadicea was also a real historical object.  Boadicea habitually wore a large, golden necklace.  By definition, a torque (or torc) is a rigid piece of personal adornment made of twisted metal that can be worn as a bracelet, neck ring, or open-ended necklace.

Obviously.

Another update: Contrary to what Disney says, John Smith and Pocahontas were not an "item" in real life (Pocahontas was 12, Smith was 21), so the Lost Love Letter of Capt. John Smith was mythical.

Favourite Season: Season 3

When artists like LMFAO, Ke$ha, Taylor Swift, Carly Rae Jespen and Justin Bieber and songs like "Party Rock Anthem", "Call Me Maybe", "Thrift Shop" and others are succeeding in today's music industry and about 99% of the world is buying their shit and any argument you make is followed by nonsense from these people, you would wish the world had ended on 21st December 2012.

I heard on a radio interview that while Franklin did discover that lightning had electrical components, he never accutally flew a kite with a key atatched to the end of it. He mearly told that story to gain the intrest of the common man, he believed no one would care if he just said he held up a lightning rod during a thunderstorm. The Irony of course is that holding a lightning rod is far more impresive.
