Episode 9: The Burnt French Flag of Louis the Thirteenth

The camera winds and twists its way through a thick jungle of strange and exotic plants. After a few wrong turns, it finally stops in front of an ancient Mayan temple. At the base of the temple, a giant stone head sits. Suddenly, the head’s eyes light up and it begins to speak:

“Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth!” These words appear on the screen. “With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is now!”

A middle-aged man wearing a denim shirt and blue jeans swings in on a rope. He drops down and runs up the Steps of Knowledge, microphone in hand.

“Thank you! Thank you, everybody! Nice to see everyone again! It’s good to see you again, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth. The rooms are filled with lost treasures protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legends behind each of these newly discovered treasures in his Temple…which one are we gonna hear about today, Olmec?”

“The legend of the Burnt French Flag of Louis the Thirteenth,” Olmec replies.

“Ah, the Burnt French Flag of Louis the Thirteenth,” Kirk repeats. “Well, the legend is set, and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the flag—will it be:

“The Red Jaguars?” The camera zooms in on each team as they are introduced.
“The Blue Barracudas?
“The Green Monkeys?
“The Orange Iguanas?
“The Purple Parrots?
“Or the Silver Snakes?

“They’ll have to pass some tough pysic—physical and mental tests, but in the end, only one team will have the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, they have to cross the Moat, and Olmec’s gonna tell us how they’ll have to do that today…”

Olmec begins to explain the Moat Crossing:
“Before you, a long rope hangs into the Moat. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will swim out to the rope, grab it, swim back with it, and swing across. Once you’re safely across, throw the rope to your partner, who will then swing across in the same way. If your feet touch the water while you’re swinging, you must go back and start again. Once both players reach the other side, run over and hit the gong.” Kirk bangs the Silver Snakes’ gong to demonstrate. “The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round!”

“All right, let’s get started,” Kirk says. “Hey teams, are you ready?”
All six teams scream and cheer in response.
“Olmec, are you ready?” Kirk asks.
“Let’s rock the Moat,” Olmec replies.
“Okay,” says Kirk. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

All six teams jump into the Moat and grab the rope. The Blue Barracudas’ girl makes it back first, followed closely by the Orange Iguanas’ boy and the Purple Parrots’ boy. The Red Jaguars’ girl and the Green Monkeys’ boy climb back onto land about two seconds later, with the Silver Snakes’ girl about a second behind them. “This is close, but they’ve still gotta swing across!” Kirk narrates. All the teams’ first players successfully swing across except the Orange Iguanas’ boy and the Silver Snakes’ girl, both of whose feet touch the water. All four players who have crossed now successfully throw the rope to their partners, and their partners all catch them, even though the Green Monkeys’ girl almost drops her rope. “Oh, she dropped it—okay, she’s got it!” Kirk narrates. Meanwhile, the Orange Iguanas’ boy and the Silver Snakes’ girl successfully swing across on their second try and throw their rope to their partners. The Orange Iguanas’ girl successfully catches hers, but the Silver Snakes’ boy fails to catch his, prompting another throw. Even as this occurs, the other four teams successfully swing across, and hit their gongs in quick succession in this order: Red Jaguars, Green Monkeys, Purple Parrots, and Blue Barracudas.

“That’s it!” Kirk shouts as he rushes to stand beside the Purple Parrots. “Purple Parrots, you guys hung in there, and now going on to the Steps of Knowledge are the Purple Parrots…along with the Green Monkeys,” Kirk briefly pauses between each team’s name to allow for applause. “And the Blue Barracudas…and the Red Jaguars! The Orange Iguanas and the Silver Snakes came up a little short, but we’ve got a nice gift for ‘em anyway, and here’s what it is!” They receive a $50 gift certificate from Claire’s.

Kirk and the remaining four teams are now standing atop the Steps of Knowledge. “As the quest continues, it’s now time for Olmec to tell us about the Burnt French Flag of Louis the Thirteenth. But teams, listen up, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you a step closer to Olmec’s Temple…”

Olmec begins to tell the story:
“One of the most famous and respected leaders of all of France was King Louis the Thirteenth. Born in 1601, Louis inherited the throne at age eight when his father, King Henry the Fourth, died. But even though Louis was the rightful ruler of France, he was still too young to make many important political decisions. His mother Marie took over the decision-making for her son, occupying a position known as a regent. She also hired an Italian man named Concini to help her with her decisions. But Marie and Concini were incredibly persistent, and continued to serve as Louis’s regent well into his teenage years. Finally, Louis could no longer take it.
“‘Mother, you have acted as my regent for too long. I am old enough to rule on my own, merci bouceaux.’
“But Concini was not impressed.
“‘Ha, look at the little bambino. He thinks-a he can rule this-a country by him-a-self.’
“‘Oui,’ added Marie. ‘Louis, sweetheart, why don’t you run along and play while we discuss important adult business?’
“But Louis would not give up that easily. Legend has it that he grabbed a small French flag hanging from a wall nearby, and took a piece of flint from his pocket. Then, to the astonishment of his mother and Concini, he set the flag on fire.
“‘Oh, I think I can manage the important adult decisions from now on. Mother, leave me to my work. And Concini, you are fired!’
“Louis went on to become one of the most revered leaders in French history, but he kept the half-burnt flag as a symbol of his rise to power. When he died, the flag disappeared—until now, that is. Your quest is to find the Burnt French Flag of Louis the Thirteenth and bring it back here.”

“Thank you, Olmec,” Kirk says. “So tell us, where is the Burnt Fla—French Flag?”

“The Burnt French Flag of Louis the Thirteenth can be found…in the Dungeon,” Olmec replies. The camera zooms in on the singed flag hanging from an outcropping in the back of the room before fading back to Kirk.

“Oooh,” Kirk replies. “All right, teams, you’re now standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In a minute, Olmec will ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on the ancient marking you see in front of you. If you’re right, you can move down to the next level, but if you’re wrong or run out of time, I’ll give the other teams a chance to answer.” Kirk begins descending the steps. “The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec’s Temple. Olmec…we’re now ready for the first question.”

Olmec begins:
“Was Louis the Thirteenth king of: France, Germany, or—”
The Green Monkeys ring in. “France.”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Green Monkeys step down.
“Green Monkeys are first to score,” Kirk narrates. “But we’ve got a long way to go—next question, Olmec.”

“Which king of France was Louis’s father: Henry the Third, Henry the Fourth, or Henry the Eighth?”
After about a second, the Red Jaguars ring in. “Henry the Fourth?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Red Jaguars step down.
“This is heating up,” Kirk narrates. “Next question, Olmec.”

“Which of the following does a regent make for a king: his appointments, his decisions, or his meals?”
The Purple Parrots ring in. “His decisions?”
“That is correct,” Olmec booms. The Purple Parrots descend one step.
“Purple Parrots are on the board now,” Kirk narrates. “Next question, Olmec.”

“Who served as Louis the Thirteenth’s regent: his mother, his grandmother, or—”
The Green Monkeys ring in. “His mother!”
“That is correct,” Olmec exclaims. The Green Monkeys descend to the next-to-last step.
“Green Monkeys are now only one step away from the Temple Games,” Kirk narrates. “Let’s continue…next question.”

“Was Louis the Thirteenth’s mother’s name: Marie, Mona, or Morticia?”
The Red Jaguars ring in. “Marie?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Red Jaguars descend to the next-to-last step.
“Red Jaguars are now one step away,” Kirk narrates. “Next question.”

“Who did Marie hire to help with her decisions: Confetti, Concini, or Panini?”
The Green Monkeys ring in after a few seconds. “Concheeny?”
“That is correct!” Olmec booms. The Green Monkeys jump to the bottom step.
“And we’ve got our first team going on to the Temple Games!” Kirk narrates. “But we need two teams—who’s gonna join them: the Red Jaguars, the Purple Parrots, or the Blue Barracudas? Next question, Olmec.”

“To get his mother’s and Concini’s attention, did Louis—”
The Red Jaguars ring in early and stumble over the answer. “He, um…took the flag off the wall, and…set it on fire.”
“That…is…correct!” Olmec booms. The surprised Red Jaguars descend to the bottom level.

“We’ve got our two teams!” Kirk says as he runs over and stands between the two advancing teams. “It’s the Green Monkeys, and the Red Jaguars! Nice job with that answer, that was tough! Blue Barracudas, Purple Parrots, come on down here. You guys did great, too, and you’re not going home empty-handed. We got a nice gift for you guys, and here’s what it is.” They receive Nintendogs for the Nintendo DS.

“These two teams will be playing for the rights to enter Olmec’s Temple, and they’re gonna do it right after this!” Kirk explains.

The camera runs along the edge of the Moat and zooms in on a waterfall at one end of it as the title appears onscreen, and we fade to a commercial.

We return from the break and see Kirk standing in front of the Temple with one team on either side of him.

“Welcome back,” he says. “Now, this is the time when the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest. But first, let’s meet our two teams…

“On the Green Monkeys, we have Nikki; she plays softball and she wants to be a nurse, and her partner is Michael; he plays basketball and he says wants to be a doctor—hey, maybe you could get her a job working for you, what do you think? Let’s hear it for the Green Monkeys!” The audience applauds for the brown-eyed, black-haired girl and the tall, hazel-eyed, brown-haired boy.

“And over on the Red Jaguars, we have Maria; she’s a cheerleader and she wants to be a model, and her partner is Eddie; he likes to rollerblade and rock-climb, and he also likes to write stories—how ‘bout a hand for the Red Jaguars?” The audience claps for the pretty brown-eyed blonde-haired girl and the lanky, blue-eyed, black-haired boy.

“All right, are you guys ready?” Kirk asks the teams.

"Yeah!" they reply.

“All right…guys, you go over there, and girls, you go over there. Now, in these Temple Games, our teams are competing for…” Kirk retrieves a Pendant of Life from his pouch and holds it up to the camera. “…Pendants of Life. The winning team will need Pendants just like this to protect them from the terrible Temple Guards as they make their way through the Temple. There are three Temple Games. Olmec…will you tell us about Temple Game #1?”

“Glad to,” Olmec replies. The black lights under Olmec come on and he begins to explain the game:

“When his mother and Concini wouldn’t let him rule by himself, Louis got their attention by pulling a flag from the wall and setting it on fire. In this game, you will also be taking flags off a wall. Before you stands a large net with numerous compartments around the edge. When Kirk gives the signal, propel yourself up to the net using the trampoline, climb up to one of the compartments, and break it open. If you find a flag, climb down and place it in your bin. If not, break open another hole and try again. The first player to get three flags or…the player with the most flags at the end of thirty seconds…wins.”

“Vive la France!” Kirk remarks. “Let’s put thirty seconds on the clock!” The clock appears onscreen, all set to go. “Okay…on your mark, get set, GO!”

Nikki and Maria are both pretty fast, but unfortunately, they both have horrible luck—neither one gets a single flag from the first five cubbyholes they break open. They both get a flag on their sixth try, and both come down to place it in their bin. Maria manages to get another one from the very next cubbyhole she tries, and places it in her bin just before time expires.

“All right, that’s it!” Kirk says as he runs back onscreen. “Come back down here, Nikki. Let’s see how each team did.” Kirk kneels beside the bins. “It looks like the Green Monkeys got one flag, and…the Red Jaguars got two flags. That means the Red Jaguars get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds. “Don’t worry, Green Monkeys, because you guys can catch up in this next game. It’s also worth a half Pendant. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2…”

Olmec begins:
“After Louis had burned the flag he took from the wall, he hung up a new one in its place. In this game, you will also be hanging up a flag. Before you stands a wall that symbolizes the wall of the palace, and at the top, a new flag. When Kirk gives the signal, begin climbing the wall by pushing in bricks to create handholds and footholds. Then push in more bricks and continue climbing. Once you reach the top, grab the flag and unfurl it, riding it back down. The first player to land or…the player that’s further along at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”

“Time to unfurl,” Kirk says. “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock!” The clock appears onscreen, ready to go. “On your marks, get set, GO!”

Both Michael and Eddie are very fast climbers, and all the way, they remain neck-and-neck. However, Eddie reaches his flag first and rides it back down with a very healthy 29 seconds left.

“All right, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as he comes back onscreen. “That was quick! The Red Jaguars got to the top and unrolled the flag first, so the Red Jaguars win the half Pendant of Life!” He pauses to allow the audience to applaud. “So now, the Red Jaguars are ahead, one Pendant to nothing. Now we move on to the final Temple Game. It’s worth a full Pendant of Life—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3…”

Olmec begins to explain the final Temple Game:
“During Louis’s reign as king, he became involved in a fierce war with Germany. You are about to help Louis’s army. Before you stand several German soldiers. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will grab a cannonball, load it in their slingshot, and shoot it at one of the soldiers. Then, the other player will shoot a cannonball. The first team to knock down all four soldiers or…the team that knocks down the most soldiers in sixty seconds…wins.”

“This is for the Temple,” Kirk says. “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock, please!” The clock appears onscreen, ready to go. “On your mark, get set, FIRE!”

Both teams have respectable aim, and both knock down two targets early in the game. Both manage to knock down the third target at roughly the same time with about fifteen seconds remaining. The Green Monkeys finally knock down their fourth target with five seconds left on the clock.

“That’s it!” Kirk shouts as he runs back onscreen. “That’s it—come on over here, everybody. The Green Monkeys managed to knock down all four of their targets before time was up, so the Green Monkeys get the full Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds for a few seconds. “So that means the Green Monkeys have one Pendant; the Red Jaguars have one Pendant, too—we’ve got a tie! Let’s bring in the tiebreaker pedestal!”

A spotter wheels in the tiebreaker pedestal, and both teams position themselves behind it. Kirk stands beside the pedestal and explains the rules.

“Okay, let me explain what’s gonna happen. In a moment, Olmec’s gonna ask you one final question. If you think you know the answer, hit the gong in front of you. You’ll have three seconds to answer the question, and I must accept your first answer. The first team to buzz in and answer correctly is going on to the Temple in search of the Burnt Flag of Louis the Thirteenth. All clear?” Both teams nod in response. “Okay…Olmec, what is the final question?”

Olmec begins to ask the final question of the day:
“According to our legend, what did Louis do to Concini? Did he: let him keep his job, demote him, or fire him?”

Red Jaguars hit the gong first. “He fired him?”

“That…is correct!” Olmec booms.

“The Red Jaguars are goin’ to the Temple!” Kirk shouts as the winning team high-fives one another. “Green Monkeys, come over here. You guys were great, too—it came down to the last question! You’re not going home empty-handed at all. We have a great gift for these two, and here’s what it is!” They receive a backpack from Outdoor Products.

As the prize disappears off-screen, Kirk is seen standing beside the winning team. “Now it’s time to see if the Red Jaguars can make it through Olmec’s Temple and retrieve the Burnt Fla…French Flag of Louis the Thirteenth, right after this!” Kirk exclaims.

The camera pans in on the Temple and zooms in on the Burnt French Flag as the title appears onscreen, and we fade to a commercial.

We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the winning team.

“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “Maria and Eddie have proven themselves worthy, and now have won the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, Olmec’s gonna give them some information to help them retrieve the Burnt French Flag of Louis the Thirteenth…”

Olmec begins to explain the layout as the camera gives us a first-person tour of the Temple:
“You could start…by running up the stairs to the Crypt! Grab the book from the skeletons, and pass into the Rope Labyrinth! Maneuver through the ropes, and climb into the Great Seal Room. Place the correct seal in the central holder, and a door may open into the Chamber…of the Sacred Markers. Match the symbols on the right to those on the left, and pass into the Safari Room. Push in the correct animal head and open the door to the SHRIIIINE of the Silver Monkey! Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room…of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the correct inscription and shout it out to open the door to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage. Slide down the tunnel to the Dungeon, where you could smash through the wall into the Dark Forest…but beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees! Find the key in the tree, and you’ll enter…the Bamboo Forest! Maneuver through the thicket, and you’ll gain entry to the Tomb of the Headless Kings. Pull the vine to release the bones, and attach the missing skull to its proper king, then…crawl through the Labyrinth, climb through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone!” Olmec pauses. “You won 1 Pendant in the Temple Games. Who’s going first?”

“I am,” says Eddie.

“Very well, Eddie,” Olmec replies. “When Kirk gives the signal, you’ll race through the gate into the Temple and make your way toward the Burt French Flag. Hidden inside the Temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but—if you’re caught without a Pendant, you’ll be taken out of the Temple, and it’ll be Maria’s turn to enter and try her luck. If you can reach the Flag, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the Gate with the Burnt French Flag of Louis the Thirteenth in three minutes, and you’ll both be handsomely rewarded—and here’s how!”

• Just for making it this far, they get an MP3 player.
• If they can grab the Flag within three minutes, they’ll also receive a bicycle from Mongoose.
• And if they can bring the Flag out of the Temple before three minutes expires, they’ll win a trip to the Bahamas.

“Ah, the Bahamas,” says Kirk. “These guys would really enjoy that trip, am I right?” Both Eddie and Maria nod. “Okay, let’s see if they can get it. Maria, sometimes a strategy can make all the difference in the Temple. Do you guys have some kind of strategy?”

“Uh, we’re gonna go up, and over, and try goin’ down into the room, but if that doesn’t work, we’ll try the bottom path. Right?” Eddie nods.

“Sounds like these two have it figured out,” Kirk remarks. “Let’s see if they can do it. All right, let’s set the clock for three minutes!” The clock appears on the screen, all set to go.

“Olmec, lower your gate.” Olmec moans gutturally as the gate is lowered, and the black lights under him go out.

“Eddie, ready?” Kirk remarks.

“Yep,” Eddie says through his mouthpiece.

“Okay,” Kirk says. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Eddie dashes up the steps and soon disappears behind Olmec. He slides down into the Ledges and begins climbing through. He hits the actuator to go to the Rope Labyrinth and progresses into the room (2:50). Eddie enters the room and scrambles over to hit the actuator for the Tomb of the Headless Kings, which opens. He climbs through the door into the room, where he immediately encounters a TEMPLE GUARD (2:42). “Oh, Temple Guard!” Kirk narrates. “That’ll cost him his only Pendant! Now they have no more Pendants to protect themselves with!” Eddie pulls the vine, releasing the bones. He looks around for a second or two before locating the skull (2:36). He places it on the stage-left king, but nothing happens. Eddie places the skull on the stage-right king instead, and the king’s chest begins pulsating red as the door to the Chamber of the Sacred Markers opens (2:27). Eddie starts climbing the ladder into the room, and emerges in the Chamber about seven seconds later. He locates two tiles on the left side of the room and rushes to place them in the correct slots (2:17). He finds the third tile and places it in its correct space, opening the doors to both the Great Seal Room and the Safari Room (2:13). Eddie begins to climb up to the Great Seal Room, but then notices the open door to the Safari Room. He drops off the ladder and dashes into this room instead (2:08). “He’s doing a great job so far!” Kirk accurately narrates. Eddie pushes the heads of the lion, Cape buffalo and elephant, but nothing happens. He finally pushes the head of the rhino, opening the doors to both the Shrine of the Silver Monkey and the Bamboo Forest (2:00). “Now, where’s he headed?” Kirk asks no one in particular. Eddie answers that question by heading into the Shrine. “Ah, the Shrine of the Siiiilver Monkey!” Kirk narrates. Eddie grabs all three pieces of the monkey and brings them to the front of the room. He places the base (1:38), continues on to the middle (1:33), and jams the head down, opening the door to the Room of the Secret Password (1:28). “That’s it! On to the Secret Password!” Kirk narrates. Eddie enters the room and opens the stage-left cabinet, taking out the tablet and his mouthpiece at the same time. “Open sesame!” he shouts, but nothing happens (1:16). He goes to the back of the room, opens the cabinet there, and cries out “Long live Olmec!” The door to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage opens (1:10). Eddie slides down into the Dungeon, finds the BURNT FRENCH FLAG, and grabs it (0:59).

“He’s got the flag!” Kirk narrates. “All the doors are open now!” Eddie breaks down the wall into the Dark Forest and trudges through the rubble into the room (0:54). He makes his way through the open door into the Bamboo Forest, climbs through, and painstakingly climbs into the Tomb of the Headless Kings (0:40). He shuffles into the Rope Labyrinth and lunges for the open door to the Ledges (0:36). “He’s almost there—I think he’s gonna do it!” Kirk narrates. The camera shows Maria cheering Eddie on. “Come on, Eddie! You can do it!” she shouts at the top of her lungs. Eddie enters the Ledges and climbs through until he reaches the back of Olmec. He totters down the steps and exits the gate, exhausted, with 22 seconds to spare.

“He did it!” Kirk shouts as a fanfare of trumpets plays. “I don’t believe it! He did it all by himself! He got the flag all by himself! They got it all! They got the MP3 player, the bike—they’re goin’ to the Bahamas!” Eddie is out of breath as Maria has him in a viselike embrace. “That was amazing—nobody’s ever done that before! He made it in and out, all by himself! This team was great; I’m really glad we could have ‘em on the show!” Kirk puts his arm around Eddie, who holds up the flag and almost passes out in Kirk’s arms. “He’s out of breath!” Kirk laughs. “Rightfully so, too! I wish we could stay here all day, but we’ve gotta go! We’ll see ya next time, but ‘til then, just remember: it’s not just Legends…it’s Legends: Rebirth! Buh-bye, everybody!”

Kirk and Maria wave to the crowd and Eddie holds the flag high as he catches his breath, and the credits roll.

Little did Eddie "the Stringbean" Dickson know when he signed up to be a contestant on the new season of Legends of the Hidden Temple that he would perform the first solo run since the show’s revival. Sporadically placed Temple Guards and plenty of time with which to make mistakes was all it took.

Eddie wasn’t all that fast, but he was by no means slow. He was also one of the smartest players to enter the Temple. For starters, he entered the Ledges instead of the Crypt, avoiding the more time-consuming top part of the Rope Labyrinth. He encountered his first and only Temple Guard in the Tomb of the Headless Kings, and was quick to hand his Pendant over. He grabbed the Burnt French Flag with a very healthy 59 seconds left. By this time, he was clearly getting tired, because he slowed down considerably in his effort to get out of the Temple, and he looked like he was about to pass out when he finally made it out. He made it, though, and became the first person to score a solo victory in Legends: Rebirth history, passing through a whopping ten rooms in the process. This was quite a memorable episode, and this team definitely earned that trip to the Bahamas.

Notes and Trivia: This is the third time in only nine episodes that the Red Jaguars make it to the Temple, but the first time that they actually win.

Even though it wasn’t encountered, there was probably a Temple Guard in the Crypt—just as Eddie is entering the Ledges, you can barely make out something moving in that room.

This is just a small thing, but maybe it might be better if you broke down the temple run into slightly shorter paragraphs. Not a big deal if you don't though.

Good fic anyhow! I'd rate it an 8 out of 10.

[The Ancient Warrior]

It was a nice read (though yeah, like he said, paragraphs would be helpful).
