Episode 4: The 12-Starred Flag of Betsy Ross

The camera winds and twists its way through a thick jungle of strange and exotic plants. After a few wrong turns, it finally stops in front of an ancient Mayan temple. At the base of the temple, a giant stone head sits. Suddenly, the head’s eyes light up and it begins to speak:

“Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth!” These words appear on the screen. “With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is now!”

A middle-aged man wearing a denim shirt and blue jeans swings in on a rope. He drops down and runs up the Steps of Knowledge, microphone in hand.

“Thank you! Thank you, everybody! Nice to see everyone again! It’s good to see you again, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth. The rooms are filled with lost treasures protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legends behind each of these newly discovered treasures in his Temple…which one are we gonna hear about today, Olmec?”

“The legend of the 12-Starred Flag of Betsy Ross,” Olmec replies.

“Ah, the 12-Starred Flag of Betsy Ross,” Kirk repeats. “Well, the legend is set, and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the 12-starred flag—will it be:

“The Red Jaguars?” The camera zooms in on each team as they are introduced.
“The Blue Barracudas?
“The Green Monkeys?
“The Orange Iguanas?
“The Purple Parrots?
“Or the Silver Snakes?

“They’ll have to pass through some tough physical and mental tests, but in the end, only one team will get to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, they have to cross the Moat, and Olmec’s gonna tell us how they must do that today. Olmec!”

Olmec begins to explain the Moat Crossing:
“Before you, a long rope hangs into the Moat. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will swim out to the rope, grab it, swim back with it, and swing across. Once you’re safely across, throw the rope to your partner, who will then swing across in the same way. If your feet touch the water while you’re swinging, you must go back and start again. Once both players reach the other side, run over and hit the gong.” Kirk bangs the Silver Snakes’ gong to demonstrate. “The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round!”

“All right, then let’s get started,” Kirk says. “Hey teams, are you ready?”
All six teams scream and cheer in response.
“Olmec, are you ready?” asks Kirk.
“You betcha,” Olmec replies.
“All right,” says Kirk. “On your mark, get set, GO!!”

All six teams jump in and grab the rope at about the same time. They all make their way back to dry land, with the Silver Snakes’ girl and the Red Jaguars’ boy making it back first. The remaining teams are only seconds behind. All the teams swing for the other side at roughly the same time, but the Silver Snakes’ girl and the Blue Barracudas’ boy touch the water, so they have to go back. All the other teams make it across, however, and all four successfully throw the rope to their partner. “This is gonna be a close one, I can tell!” Kirk narrates. As the second members of each team take off, the Green Monkeys’ girl falls off the rope, so she swims back to start again, taking the rope with her. The Blue Barracudas’ boy makes it across successfully on his second try, but the Silver Snakes’ girl is not so lucky—she again touches the water, and swims back to begin again. However, the Red Jaguars, Purple Parrots and Orange Iguanas successfully make it across, and hit their gong in that order. “Three teams—we can only take one more!” Kirk narrates. The Blue Barracudas’ girl successfully swings across, but so does the Green Monkeys’ girl. The two have a very close race to their respective gong, with the Green Monkeys beating the Blue Barracudas by mere inches.

“That’s it! We’ve got four teams!” Kirk shouts as he walks over to stand beside the Purple Parrots. “Purple Parrots with no problem getting across, they blazed across that Moat—going on to the Steps of Knowledge are the Purple Parrots…along with the Orange Iguanas,” Kirk briefly pauses between each team’s name to allow for applause. “And the Green Monkeys…and the Red Jaguars! The Blue Barracudas and the Silver Snakes gave it their all, too, and they’re not goin’ home empty-handed. We have a great gift for ‘em, and here it is.” They receive a $50 gift certificate from Old Navy.

Kirk and the four remaining teams are now standing atop the Steps of Knowledge. “As the quest continues, it’s time for Olmec to tell us about the 12-Star Flag of Betsy Ross. But teams, pay attention, because your knowledge of the legend can bring you a step closer to Olmec’s Temple…”

Olmec begins to tell the story:
“One of the most famous and celebrated women in American history was Betsy Ross. Born in Philadelphia, Betsy later moved to Gloucester, New Jersey where she married a man named John Ross. They opened a fabric shop, where Betsy gained charge of the sewing duties. After John Ross died in 1774, she became the sole owner of the fabric shop. When the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776, Betsy became swamped with work, sewing many of the numerous styles of unofficial American flags displayed around the city. Legend has it that one day, a young man from the Constitutional Convention named Francis Hopkinson walked into the shop.
“‘Mrs. Ross, I have a proposition you might be interested in.’
“With that, Hopkinson took a rolled piece of paper from his coat pocket, revealing a pattern of a flag displaying 12 stripes and 12 stars, one stripe and star for each colony that had ratified the Constitution at that time.
“‘Yeah, sure. I’ll have it ready by Tuesday,’ Betsy assured Hopkinson.
“She worked on the flag nonstop for days. However, just as she was putting the final touches on the flag, she happened to glance at a newspaper headline a customer was reading.
“‘‘Maryland ratifies U.S. Constitution’—darn.’
“And with that, Betsy set to work on a new flag, this time with 13 stars and stripes instead of 12. The 13-starred flag Betsy made became the first official flag of the United States, but the original 12-starred one ended up in the Temple. Your goal is to find the 12-Starred Flag of Betsy Ross and bring it back here.”

“Thanks a lot, Olmec,” Kirk says. “But tell us, please, where is the flag?”

“The 12-Starred Flag of Betsy Ross can be found in the Chamber of the Sacred Markers,” Olmec responds. The camera zooms in on the flag hanging on the Temple Guard door in the back of the room, and then cuts back to Kirk.

“Teams, you’re now standing on the Steps of Knowledge,” Kirk explains. “In a moment, Olmec’s gonna ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, stomp down on that ancient marking in front of you. If you’re right, you’ll be able to move down to the next level, but if you’re wrong or you run out of time, I’m gonna give the other teams a chance to answer.” Kirk begins descending the Steps. “The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec’s Temple. Olmec…we’re now ready for your first question.”

Olmec begins:
“Was Betsy Ross: a nurse, a seamstress, or a teacher?”
The Purple Parrots ring in. “A seamstress?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Purple Parrots descend one step.
“Purple Parrots are the first to score,” Kirk narrates. “We’ve got a long way to go, though—next question.”

“Did Betsy Ross live in: Delaware, Massachusetts, or New Jersey?”
The Orange Iguanas ring in. “New Jersey?” they guess.
“That…is correct,” Olmec responds. The Orange Iguanas get to step down.
“Sometimes guessing pays off,” Kirk narrates. “Next question, please.”

“What was Betsy’s husband’s name: George, John, or—”
The Green Monkeys ring in prematurely. “Uh…George?” the boy guesses.
“Incorrect,” Olmec replies. “The remaining two choices are: John, or Ringo?”
The Red Jaguars ring in and guess. “Ringo?”
“Incorrect,” Olmec replies as the audience groans. “The correct answer is John.”
“All right, take it easy now,” Kirk appeases. “Let’s just move on to the next question.”

Olmec does so by asking: “Was the Declaration of Independence signed in—”
The Red Jaguars ring in early. “July 4, 1776!” the boy confidently shouts.
“That is absolutely correct!” Olmec booms. The Red Jaguars advance one level.
“Red Jaguars come back with a very specific answer, and it pays off!” Kirk narrates. “Olmec, next question.”

“Did Francis Hopkinson work for: the Federal Reserve, the Constitutional Convention, or the Internal Revenue Service?”
The Purple Parrots ring in after a few seconds. “The…Constitution Convention.”
“That…is correct,” Olmec replies. The Purple Parrots advance to the next-to-last step.
“Purple Parrots, only one step away from the Temple Games,” Kirk narrates. “We need two teams, though. Olmec, next question.”

“According to our legend, how many stars and stripes did the original flag have: 11, 12, or—”
The Red Jaguars ring in. “The first one…had just twelve.”
“That’s correct,” Olmec replies. The Red Jaguars join the Purple Parrots on the next-to-last step.
“Red Jaguars are only one step away from the Temple Games now,” Kirk narrates. “Green Monkeys and Orange Iguanas can catch up, though—next question.”

“Why did Betsy start working on a new flag—”
The Green Monkeys ring in early and stumble over the answer. “Because, um…the first flag…had the wrong number of stars on it.”
“That…is correct,” Olmec replies. The Green Monkeys step down.
“Green Monkeys are on the board,” Kirk remarks. “This is a close race—next question.”

“According to our legend, what state was the 13th to ratify the Constitution: Maryland, Massachusetts, or Rhode Island?”
The Red Jaguars ring in. “Maryland?”
“That is correct!” Olmec booms. The Red Jaguars step down to the bottom.
“We’ve got our first team! It’s the Red Jaguars!” Kirk remarks. “But we still need one more team. Who’s it gonna be: the Purple Parrots, the Green Monkeys, or the Orange Iguanas? Next question, Olmec.”

“What was the name of the battle camp where George Washington and his troops spent a famous winter: Fort Sumter—”
The Purple Parrots ring in early. “Valley Forge,” the girl says confidently.
“That is correct!” Olmec replies. The Purple Parrots join the Red Jaguars on the bottom step.

“That’s it!” Kirk says. “We’ve got our two teams—the Purple Parrots, and the Red Jaguars! Green Monkeys and Orange Iguanas, come on down here. You guys gave it a great effort, and you’re not going away empty-handed. We got a great gift for you guys, and here’s what it is!” They receive a one-year subscription to Gamefly.

“These two teams are gonna be playing for the right to enter Olmec’s Temple, and they’re gonna do it right after this!” Kirk explains.

The camera zooms in on the Ledges, pans along to the Robe Labyrinth and peers into the room before the title appears onscreen, and we fade to a commercial.

We return from the break and see Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the two teams on either side of him.

“Welcome back,” he says. “Now’s the time when the glory comes—goes to the fastest and the strongest, but before that happens, I’d like to meet our two teams…

“On the Purple Parrots, we have Kimberly; she’s on the flag squad at her school and she wants to be a computer programmer; and her partner, Graham, he’s told me he likes to skateboard and he also enjoys writing fan fictions—don’t know what that is, but let’s hear it for the Purple Parrots!” The audience applauds for the blonde-haired girl and the tall boy with long black hair.

“And on the Red Jaguars, we have Nadia; she told me she plays basketball and enjoys going to the mall with her friends, and her partner Kevin likes soccer and he wants to be a fireman—let’s hear it for the Red Jaguars!” The audience applauds for the short-haired African-American girl and the tall, brown-haired boy.

“All right then, are you guys ready?” Kirk asks both teams.

"Yeah!" they all reply.

“Okay, go get ready for the Temple Games, while I tell everyone what’s happening here. In the Temple Games, these teams are competing for…” Kirk retrieves a Pendant of Life from his pouch and holds it up to the camera. “…Pendants of Life. The winning team will need the Pendants they win to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through the Temple. There are three Temple Games, and Olmec, could you tell us about Temple Game #1?”

“If I have to,” Olmec replies. The black lights under Olmec come on and he begins to explain the game:

“Betsy Ross had to sew thirteen stars on the flag she made, one for each American colony. You are about to help Betsy retrieve some stars for her flag. When Kirk gives the signal, jump up, grab a star off the ceiling, come down, and place it in your basket. Then jump up, grab another star and do it again. The first player to gather all thirteen stars, or…the player that gathers the most stars at the end of thirty seconds…wins.”

“Betsy used to get her stars just like this,” Kirk explains. A small number of audience members actually laugh. “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock—or thirty seconds on the clock, I should say.” The timer appears onscreen. “On your marks, get set, GO!”

Both girls start at about the same pace, but Kimberly eventually develops a faster rhythm of jumping up and getting the stars. Unfortunately, she has horrible aim, and only gets a star in her basket about fifty percent of the time. Nadia isn’t that fast, but she is consistent, and gets every star that she retrieves in the basket. This pattern continues until the clock reaches zero.

“That’s it! Come on down here,” Kirk says as Kimberly descends to the floor holding a star she just retrieved. She places it in her basket. “Let’s count ‘em up, see how you did.” Kirk kneels beside the two baskets. “The Purple Parrots got one, two, three, four, five—that last one doesn’t count, so they got five stars; and the Red Jaguars got one, two, three, four, five, six—they got seven! The Red Jaguars win the half Pendant of Life!” He pauses to allow for applause. “Don’t worry, because the Purple Parrots can catch up in this next game. It’s also worth a half Pendant—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2…”

Olmec begins:
“Once Betsy’s flag was completed, it became the symbol of American freedom. You are about to display an American flag. Before you stands a brick wall, and at the top, a furled American flag. When Kirk gives the signal, begin climbing the wall by pushing in bricks to create handholds and footholds. Then push in more bricks and continue climbing. Once you reach the top, grab the flag and unfurl it, riding it back down. The first player to land, or…the player that’s further along at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”

“Hooray for the red, white, and blue…” Kirk sings. “Let’s set the clock for sixty seconds.” The clock appears onscreen. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Graham and Kevin are both fairly quick climbers, but Kevin has horrible luck finding foot and handholds. Graham is almost to the top when Kevin is only halfway up, and Graham successfully grabs the huge flag and rides back down with 15 seconds to spare.

“That’s it!” Kirk says as Kevin drops back down. Kirk runs back onscreen to stand between the two boys. “The Purple Parrots rode the flag back down first—that means that the Purple Parrots win the half Pendant of Life!” He pauses to allow for applause. “So now, we’re tied up at a half Pendant apiece. Now, we go to the third and final Temple Game, worth a full Pendant. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3, please…”

Olmec begins to explain the final Temple Game:
“During the American Revolution, Betsy Ross’ flag was displayed throughout the colonies with the hope that it would inspire the American soldiers to fight even harder. You are about to help the American soldiers. Before you stand an army of British soldiers. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will grab a cannonball, load it in their slingshot, and shoot it at one of the soldiers. Then, the other player will shoot a cannonball. The first team to knock down all four soldiers or…the team that knocks over the most soldiers in sixty seconds…wins.”

“This is for the Temple,” Kirk comments. “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock!” The timer appears onscreen with the usual sound effect. “All right…ready, aim, FIRE!”

Both teams have okay aim, and both manage to knock over two targets in the early parts of the game. But Kimberly’s aim worsens as the game progresses, and Graham has terrible luck in actually knocking over the targets as opposed to simply teetering them. Kevin, on the other hand, knocks over a third target just before the game ends.

“That’s it!” Kirk shouts, rushing back onscreen. “All of you, come over here so we can count it up…it looks like the Purple Parrots got two, and the Red Jaguars got three…that means the Red Jaguars win the full Pendant of Life!” Kirk pauses for a few seconds, allowing some applause. “So that means the Red Jaguars have 1½ Pendants, and the Purple Parrots have a half—that means the Red Jaguars are goin’ to the Temple!” Kevin and Nadia high-five one another and jump up and down as everyone applauds. “Purple Parrots, you guys did great, too. It couldn’t have been closer. We’ve got a great gift for you guys and here’s what it is.” They receive a custom-made Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth watch.

As the prize disappears off-screen, Kirk is seen standing beside the winning team. “Now it’s time to see if the Red Jaguars can make it through Olmec’s Temple and retrieve the 12-Star Flag of Betsy Ross, right after this!”

The camera pans in on the Temple and zooms in on the 12-Starred Flag before the title appears onscreen, and we go to a commercial.

We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the winning team.

“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “Kevin and Nadia have proven themselves worthy and have earned the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, Olmec will give them some information to help retrieve the 12-Star Flag of Betsy Ross…”

Olmec begins to explain the layout as the camera gives us a first-person tour of the Temple:
“You could start…by running up the stairs to the Crypt! Grab the book from the skeletons, and pass into the Rope Labyrinth! Maneuver through the ropes, and climb into the Great Seal Room. Place the correct seal in the central holder, and a door may open into the Chamber…of the Sacred Markers. Match the symbols on the right to those on the left, and pass into the Safari Room. Push in the correct animal head and open the door to the SHRIIIINE of the Silver Monkey! Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room…of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the correct inscription and shout it out to open the door to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage. Slide down the tunnel to the Dungeon, where you could smash through the wall into the Dark Forest…but beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees! Find the key in the tree, and you’ll enter…the Bamboo Forest! Maneuver through the thicket, and you’ll gain entry to the Tomb of the Headless Kings. Pull the vine to release the bones, and attach the missing skull to its proper king, then…crawl through the Labyrinth, climb through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone!” Olmec pauses. “You won 1½ Pendants in the Temple Games. Who’s going first?”

“I am,” says Kevin.

“Very well, Kevin,” Olmec replies. “When Kirk gives the signal, you’ll race through the gate into the Temple and make your way toward the 12-Starred Flag. Hidden inside the Temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but—if you’re caught without a Pendant, you’ll be taken out of the Temple, and it’ll be Nadia’s turn to enter and try her luck. Hidden somewhere in the Temple is the other half of your Pendant. If you can find it and you’re carrying the other half, you’ll receive an extra life. If you can reach the Flag, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the gate with the 12-Starred Flag of Betsy Ross in three minutes, and you’ll both be handsomely rewarded—and here’s how!”

• Just for making it this far, they’ll get a sports package from Regents.
• If they can reach the 12-Starred Flag within the time limit, they’ll also receive a laptop computer from Toshiba.
• And if they can bring the Flag out of the Temple before three minutes expires, they’ll win a trip to the Bahamas.

“Ah, the Bahamas,” Kirk says. “Let’s see if they can make it to the Temple and win that trip. Nadia, can you tell me if you have a strategy?”

“Uh…I’m just gonna see how much he clears out, and then take it from there,” Nadia explains.

“Well, we’ll see if that’s gonna work,” says Kirk. “Both of you, mouthpieces in. Let’s set the clock for three minutes.” The clock appears in the bottom corner of the screen.

“Olmec, if you please, lower the gate.” Olmec moans gutturally as the gate is lowered, and the black lights under him go out.

“Okay…Kevin, all set?” Kirk asks.

Kevin nods as a response.

“All right…on your mark, get set, GO!”

Kevin dashes up the stairs, Pendant in hand. He appears in the Crypt (2:54) and pulls all three books, opening the door to the Rope Labyrinth on the third try. He darts in and arduously climbs through the ropes, finally arriving on the other side (2:40). He pushes the actuator to the Chamber of the Sacred Markers, but nothing happens. Kevin then climbs up and tries the actuator to the Great Seal Room, but again, nothing happens (2:32). “It looks like there’s only one door left!” Kirk narrates. Kevin reluctantly climbs down to the bottom level of the room and presses the actuator for the Tomb of the Headless Kings, which opens (2:20). He climbs through and makes a beeline for the vine, but the first TEMPLE GUARD jumps out from hiding (2:17). “Oh, that’ll cost him a Pendant!” Kirk narrates. Kevin hands his Pendant over without missing a beat, and pulls the vine, releasing the bones (2:12). He looks around for a few seconds before locating the skull, which he places on the stage-left king (2:07). It’s the correct one, and the door to the Bamboo Forest opens. Kevin climbs through and begins climbing through the thicket of bamboo poles. “That Bamboo Forest can really slow you down,” Kirk narrates. Kevin eventually makes it to the other side, and presses the actuator for the Dark Forest, which opens (1:48). He crawls through, and after looking around for a couple of seconds, reaches into the stage-right tree in search of a key. He can’t find one, so he simply breaks down the wall and ventures into the Dungeon (1:40). Kevin heads for the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage, but the second TEMPLE GUARD jumps out from hiding and grabs him (1:35)!

“Oh, Temple Guard! Go, Nadia!” Kirk shouts, and Nadia takes off. She climbs the stairs, darts through the Crypt (1:28), and begins climbing through the Rope Labyrinth. However, she immediately climbs downward, darts toward the open door to the Tomb of the Headless Kings and crawls through (1:18). Nadia dashes through the Tomb and into the Bamboo Forest, crawling through the room on her hands and knees. She reaches the other side (1:10), and climbs through the open door to the Dark Forest. She arrives in the room and climbs over the broken wall into the Dungeon (1:03). Nadia begins climbing up the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage (0:59). “She’s headed into the Pharaoh’s Passage—will she make it through to the top?” Kirk asks. Nadia appears in the Room of the Secret Password (0:48) and looks around for a few seconds before she opens up the cabinet in the back of the room. She takes out her mouthpiece and screams “Long live Olmec!”, but nothing happens. Nadia opens the cabinet on the stage-left side of the room, takes out the tablet and yells “Open sesame!”, which opens the door to the Shrine of the Silver Monkey (0:34). She races into the room and looks around for a few seconds. “She’s gotta put the monkey together,” Kirk narrates. Nadia dashes to the back of the room and grabs the base and head of the statue (0:23). She runs back to the front of the room and places the base on the pedestal, but realizes that she’s forgotten the middle. She runs back to get it and brings it back to the front, placing it on the pedestal. She then jams the head into the statue, opening the door to the Safari Room (0:03). She runs through the door into the room just as time expires.

“Oh, she ran out of time!” Kirk laments as Kevin looks disappointed. “They were so close, too! They ran out of time, but that’s okay—they still get the sports package, and they still get to leave with their dignity, and we’ve gotta get outta here. We’ll see ya next time, and remember—it’s not just Legends, it’s Legends: Rebirth! Buh-bye, everybody!”

Kirk and Kevin wave to the crowd, and Nadia waves, too, when she emerges from the Temple as the credits roll.

Result: Ran out of time

This episode features a typical example of a Temple run that pairs up a smart (but not fast) team with a brutal Temple layout. This layout required the team to pass through a whopping eleven rooms in order to reach the artifact. You’d think the production crew would have learned their lesson from the old Legends, but no—they still have their “hey, let’s make this Temple Run as difficult as possible” days.

Kevin (despite thinking that Betsy Ross was married to The Beatles’ drummer) was a pretty smart player, albeit not as fast as one would hope for in a contestant. He attempted to make a beeline for the artifact by trying the door to the Chamber of the Sacred Markers in the Rope Labyrinth, but as we’ve all seen many times before, this almost never works. He eventually made it to the Dungeon before being taken out with 1:35 left.

Nadia was a little faster than Kevin, but she wasn’t much better. She did take the shortest path possible in the Rope Labyrinth, as well as doing something nobody else had done before in the Bamboo Forest (crawling on her hands and knees to avoid most of the bamboo poles), but she took way too long in the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage. Even if she had bolted through all the rooms and made it to the Flag, I don’t believe she could have made it out in time. An unfortunately difficult layout cost this team a victory.

Notes & Trivia: During the Temple Run, you can barely make out a little movement in the Safari Room as Nadia enters it. This leads me to believe that the third Temple Guard was hidden there.

The hidden half Pendant was located on the stage-right cabinet in the Room of the Secret Password (the first time it’s been hidden there, I believe); however, neither player found it.

This episode marks the first time someone crawls on their hands and knees through the Bamboo Forest.

Next to the infamous “Colonel Sanders” answer from “Wild Bill Hickok and the Dead Man’s Hand”, that “Ringo” response from the
