Epica - "Chasing The Dragon"


The thing that's really amazing about this song is the sheer range of heaviness.  The beginning features only an acoustic guitar, some symphonic instruments and Simone's vocals; it works its way up to the band's regular symphonic-power-metal-plus-death-growls sound about two-thirds of the way in and for a short while is almost noise (cacophonic drumming and shredding plus Mark's death growls) before mellowing back out.  It has to be heard to be believed, hahah.

This song, however much I like it, might be the epitome of why I disliked the Cryptic Writings era. This song is extremely fast, but not heavy.
