Episode 43: The Oxygen-Filled Bell Jar of Joseph Priestley

The camera winds and twists its way through a thick jungle of strange and exotic plants. After a few wrong turns, it finally stops in front of an ancient Mayan temple. At the base of the temple, a giant stone head sits. Suddenly, a torch on either side of the head begins burning. The head’s eyes light up, and it begins to speak:

Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth!” These words appear on the screen. “With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is now!”

A middle-aged man wearing a denim shirt and blue jeans rides in on an ATV. He dismounts the vehicle and runs up the Steps of Knowledge, microphone in hand.

“Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see everyone! Nice to see you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rebirth. The rooms are filled with lost treasures protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards. Only Olmec knows the legends behind each of these all-new treasures in his temple…which one are we gonna hear about today?”

“The legend of the Oxygen-Filled Bell Jar of Joseph Priestley,” Olmec replies.

“Ooh, the Oxygen-Filled Bell Jar of Joseph Priestley,” Kirk repeats. “Well, the legend’s set, and one of these six teams will have a chance to retrieve the Oxygen-Filled Bell Jar—will it be:

“The Red Jaguars?” The camera zooms in on each team as they are introduced.
“The Blue Barracudas?
“The Green Monkeys?
“The Orange Iguanas?
“The Purple Parrots?
“Or the Silver Snakes?

“They’ll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests, but in the end, only one team will have the rights to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, they need to cross the Moat, and Olmec will tell them how they have to do it today…”

Olmec begins to explain the Moat Crossing:
“Before you are two vines that stretch across the Moat: one at foot level, and one at arm’s reach. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will walk across the Moat on the bottom vine while holding onto the top vine with their hands. Once you’re safely across, it’s your partner’s turn to cross in the same way. If you fall, or fail to keep at least one hand on the top vine, you must go back and start again. Once both players reach the other side, run over and hit the gong.” Kirk hits the Silver Snakes’ gong to demonstrate. “The first four teams to hit their gongs will go on to the next round!”

“Okay, let’s get started,” remarks Kirk. “Teams, are you ready?”
The teams all shout and cheer in response.
“Olmec, are you ready?” asks Kirk.
“Yessiree,” Olmec replies.
“All right,” says Kirk. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

All six teams send their first members out across the vine (the male members for each team, except the Purple Parrots and Orange Iguanas) as each team begins their journey across the Moat. “This is tricky, because you have to concentrate on staying on the bottom and holding on to the top at the same time!” Kirk explains. The Red Jaguars’ boy makes it about halfway across first, followed closely by the Purple Parrots’ girl and the Green Monkeys’ boy. The Orange Iguanas’ girl loses her grip and falls in the Moat, so she is promptly sent back. The three fastest first players make it across first, and the second players from the Red Jaguars, Green Monkeys and Purple Parrots all start to cross now. The Blue Barracudas’ boy and Silver Snakes’ boy make it across a few seconds later, and their female partners step onto the bottom vine. “It’s close—anybody’s game now!” Kirk observes. The Orange Iguanas’ girl steps onto the deck now, and her male partner starts crossing, but as soon as he steps onto the bottom vine, he slips and falls into the Moat, and the spotters prompt him to try again. The Red Jaguars, Green Monkeys and Purple Parrots all get their second player across successfully, and they all run over to hit their gongs in that order. “One, two, three teams—only room for one more!” Kirk narrates. A few seconds later, the Blue Barracudas’ girl steps onto the dock, and she and her partner hit the gong together.

“That’s it—four teams, just like that!” Kirk shouts as he rushes over and stands beside the Purple Parrots. “Purple Parrots were great—no problems at all, and they’re going on to the Steps of Knowledge…along with the Green Monkeys…” Kirk pauses between each team’s name to allow for applause. “…and the Blue Barracudas…and the Red Jaguars! The Orange Iguanas and the Silver Snakes put up a good fight, but they’re not goin’ home empty-handed. We’ve got a great gift for them, and here it—here’s what it is!” They receive a $50 gift card from FYE.

Kirk and the remaining four teams are now standing atop the Steps of Knowledge. “As the quest continues, it’s now time for Olmec to tell us about the Oxygen-Filled Bell Jar of Joseph Priestley. But pay attention, teams, because your knowledge of the legend could bring you a step closer to Olmec’s Temple…”

Olmec begins to tell the story:
“One of the most brilliant scientists of all time was Joseph Priestley. Born in England, his father wanted him to be a minister, but Joseph’s first love was science. In 1766, he discovered many properties of electricity, but he soon became interested in the subject of gases. Legend has it that one day, when Joseph had finished his work in the lab, he placed a small bell jar filled with a small amount of poisonous mercury on a windowsill before setting out for home. When he returned to his lab the next day, he discovered that the mercury was gone, and the bell jar was seemingly empty. The mercury inside the jar had reacted with the sunlight, and formed something else.
“‘Could this be…a new gas?’ Joseph asked himself. ‘I must study this further…’
“Joseph placed a candle inside the jar, and found that it burned brighter than a candle in plain air. Not satisfied with this, he decided to try a living target, so he took his pet mouse, Whiskers, and placed him in the jar.
“‘I just hope I don’t have a dead mouse on my hands later,’ Joseph worried to himself.
“To his surprise, Whiskers not only lived, but she was much more active inside the bell jar than outside it. On a whim, Priestley even breathed the gas himself.
“‘Whoa…what a rush!’
“Joseph called his new discovery 'dephlogisticated air', or ‘air that had been burned’. Years later, it was renamed oxygen, which it is still known as today. Today, Joseph Priestley is regarded as one of the founders of modern chemistry, but his bell jar was lost to time—until now. Your quest is to find the Oxygen-Filled Bell Jar of Joseph Priestley and bring it back here.”

“All right, thanks, Olmec,” says Kirk. “So tell us, where is the Bell Jar?”

“The Oxygen-Filled Bell Jar of Joseph Priestley can be found in the Lightning Ball Room,” replies Olmec. The camera zooms in on a large, sealed bell jar located on the left-hand side of the railing beside the lightning ball itself, and then cuts back to Kirk.

“Ooh,” Kirk replies. “All right, teams, you’re now standing on the Steps of Knowledge. In just a minute, Olmec’s gonna ask you a question. If you think you know the answer, I want you to stomp down on that ancient marking there in front of you. If you’re right, you’re gonna move down to the next level. But if you’re wrong or you run out of time, I’ll give the other teams a chance.” Kirk begins descending the Steps. “The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec’s Temple. Olmec…we’re now ready for the first question.”

Olmec begins:
“Was Joseph Priestley: a painter, a scientist, or a priest?”
The Purple Parrots ring in. “A…scientist?”
“That…is correct,” Olmec replies. The Purple Parrots step down to the second level.
“Purple Parrots, step down,” Kirk instructs. “Next question.”

“Was Joseph Priestley born in: Spain, England, or France?”
After a few seconds, the Red Jaguars ring in. “England…?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Red Jaguars join the Purple Parrots on the second step.
“Red Jaguars are right behind ‘em,” Kirk narrates. “Next question, please.”

“What state of matter did Joseph study: solids, liquids, or gases?”
The Purple Parrots ring in. “Gases…?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Purple Parrots proceed to the penultimate step.
“Now the Purple Parrots are only one step away from the Temple Games,” Kirk observes. “Remember, we need two teams…next question.”

“What gas is Joseph most famous for discovering: carbon dioxide—”
The Blue Barracudas ring in early. “Um…oxygen?”
“That…is correct,” Olmec replies. The Blue Barracudas step down one level.
“Blue Barracudas step down now,” says Kirk. “Next question, please.”

“According to our legend, what container did Joseph first discover oxygen in: a flask, a test tube, or a bell jar?”
After a few seconds of inactivity, the Green Monkeys ring in just before a bell sounds. “Um…a…bell jar?”
“That is correct,” Olmec replies. The Green Monkeys join the Red Jaguars and the Blue Barracudas on the second step.
“Now everybody’s on the board!” Kirk says. “We’re still looking for two teams. Next question, Olmec.”

“What type of animal did Joseph test with the oxygen: a bird—”
The Red Jaguars ring in. “A mouse!”
“That is correct,” Olmec booms. The Red Jaguars join the Purple Parrots on the next-to-last step.
“Red Jaguars are now just one step away,” Kirk explains. “Still time for the other two teams, though—next question.”

“What letter is the chemical symbol for oxygen: O, X, or N?”
The Purple Parrots ring in. “O?”
“That is correct!” Olmec booms. The Purple Parrots leap to the bottom step.
“The Purple Parrots are our first team for the Temple Games,” Kirk says. “We’re looking for one more team—will it be the Red Jaguars, the Blue Barracudas, or the Green Monkeys? Olmec, next question, please.”

“About how much of the air we breathe is oxygen: 20 percent, 40 percent, or 60 percent?”
The Blue Barracudas ring in. “60 percent…?”
“Incorrect,” Olmec replies.
The Red Jaguars ring in. “20 percent…?”
“That…is…correct!” Olmec booms. The Red Jaguars leap to the bottom step and high-five one another.

“We’ve got our two teams right here!” says Kirk as he runs over and stands between them. “The Red Jaguars, and the Purple Parrots! Blue Barracudas and Green Monkeys, come on down here, you guys. You guys gave it a great try, too, and you’re not going home empty-handed. We’ve got a great gift for you, and here’s what it is!” They receive Endless Ocean: Blue World for the Nintendo Wii.

Kirk is now seen standing between the two remaining teams. “These two teams are gonna be playing for the rights to enter Olmec’s Temple, right after this!”

The camera pans to the left and zooms in on the actuator for the Tomb of the Headless Kings in the Bottomless Pit. The title appears onscreen, and we go to a commercial.

We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the two remaining teams standing on either side of him.

“Welcome back,” he says. “Now the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, but first off, I’d like to get to know our two teams a little better…”

Kirk turns to the Red Jaguars first, who are made up of a tall blue-eyed girl with long black hair and an equally tall brown-eyed boy with very short ash-blond hair. He turns to talk to the girl first.
“First, on the Red Jaguars, we have Megan. How old are you, Megan?”
“Fourteen,” Megan replies.
“And it says here you play soccer and softball, but what you really like to do is write—what kind of stuff do you write?”
“Uh, mostly fiction,” Megan explains. “I just…like to read fiction stories, and…I just kind of got into writing my own stuff.”
“What’s your favorite thing you’ve written so far?” asks Kirk.
“Um…probably this story about a girl who turns into a mermaid,” Megan replies after thinking for a while.
“Hmm, sounds interesting,” says Kirk before turning to talk to her male partner. “And over here, we have her partner, Brad. How old are you, Brad?”
“Fourteen,” Brad replies.
“And it says here you like to play hockey—now, is that ice or street hockey?”
“Uh…both, but I like street hockey better,” says Brad.
“What position do you normally play?” asks Kirk.
“I’m usually the goalie,” says Brad.
“Well, let’s see if they can score in these Temple Games—let’s hear it for the Red Jaguars!” Megan and Brad applaud along with the audience.

Kirk now turns to the Purple Parrots, who are made up of a short green-eyed girl with long, straight blonde hair and a much taller African-American boy.
“And on the Purple Parrots, we have Sara. How old are you?”
“Twelve,” Sara replies.
“And it says here you have a pretty unusual talent—what is that?”
“Um, I can walk on my hands,” Sara says.
“For how long?” asks Kirk.
“Um…probably from about here to…the camera guy over there,” Sara replies.
“Okay…interesting,” Kirk says before turning to talk to her partner. “And over here is your partner, Marcus. How old are you, Marcus?”
“Thirteen,” Marcus responds.
“All right…and it says here you play baseball, but what you really like is scuba diving—why’s that?”
“Well, ‘cause I like the ocean, and I like to swim, and…that’s both of ‘em together, so I just really like it.”
“Sounds like we’ve got two tough teams today,” says Kirk. “Let’s hear it for the Purple Parrots!” Marcus and Sara applaud along with the audience.

“All right, are you guys ready to play?” Kirk asks the two teams.

“Yeah!” all four players reply.

“Well, all right then!” Kirk says. “Go get ready for the Temple Games! Now, in these Temple Games, our teams are competing for…” Kirk retrieves a Pendant of Life from his pouch and holds it up to the camera. “…Pendants of Life. The winning team is gonna need Pendants just like this to protect them from the dreaded Temple Guards inside Olmec’s Temple. There are three Temple Games—Olmec, could you tell us about the first one?”

The black lights under Olmec come on as he begins to explain the first Temple Game:
“By leaving a bell jar full of mercury in sunlight, Joseph Priestley unintentionally set off a chemical reaction that produced pure oxygen inside the bell jar. In this game, you’ll be setting off a chemical reaction of your own. When Kirk gives the signal, adjust your weight and begin turning the giant wheel. For every rotation you make, it symbolizes one molecule of pure oxygen from the chemical reaction. The player who makes the most oxygen molecules in thirty seconds…wins.”

“It’s a race to make oxygen,” Kirk remarks. “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock!” The clock slams down in the bottom right-hand corner with a loud gong, set for thirty seconds instead of sixty as Kirk said. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Both Sara and Megan have a little trouble balancing on them at first, but they get the hang of it at about the same time and start rotating the giant Pendant-shaped wheels. Sara falls off almost immediately, allowing Megan to take a slight lead. Both girls continue rotating the wheels, with the slightly faster Megan taking a two-point lead with about ten seconds remaining. Megan falls off with about five seconds left, but unfortunately, Sara can’t catch up before time expires.

“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as he appears back onscreen. “Come on down here, you two—that was fast and furious, but who did better?” Kirk glances back at the scorecards. “The Red Jaguars made eight oxygen molecules, and…the Purple Parrots got seven! That means the Red Jaguars get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds briefly. “The Red Jaguars have a half Pendant, but the Purple Parrots can catch up in this next game. Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #2…”

Olmec begins:
“To test if the oxygen he discovered was safe to breathe, Joseph placed a mouse inside his bell jar. In this game, you’ll be doing the same thing. When Kirk gives the signal, jump up, grab a mouse, come back around and place it in your bin. Then run around, grab another mouse and do it again. The first player to get all their mice, or…the player with the most mice at the end of thirty seconds…wins.”

“Don’t worry, these mice don’t bite,” jokes Kirk. “Let’s set the clock for thirty seconds!” The clock slams down in the corner. “On your mark, get set, GO!”

Both Brad and Marcus get the hang of this rotating-lever game pretty quickly, but Brad develops a slightly better rhythm of jumping up and grabbing his plastic black mice. Marcus has three mice—half of the total for each team—in his bin at the halfway mark, but Brad has four. With four seconds remaining, Brad drops his sixth and final mouse into the bin to end the game.

“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as he appears back onscreen. “Nice job, you guys! Great performance by both teams!” Marcus almost hits Kirk as he tries to stop spinning on his lever. “But the Red Jag—whoa-ho, easy there! The Red Jaguars got all six of their rats before time was up, so the Red Jaguars get the half Pendant of Life!” The audience applauds for a few seconds. “So now, the Red Jaguars have two Pendants—no, the Red Jaguars have one Pendant, and the Purple Parrots don’t have any yet. But now, we go to the third and final Temple Game. It’s worth a full Pendant—Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #3…”

Olmec begins to explain the final Game:
“In Joseph’s time, air was thought to be a pure substance, completely devoid of all other gases. Today, we know that to be the opposite—air is made up of many different types of colorless, odorless gases. Before you stands a wall with the names of four different gases contained in air—nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and carbon dioxide. When Kirk gives the signal, one player from each team will shoot a ball up to their partner on the wall. Their partner will then catch the ball and place it on the name of the gas there. Once an event is covered, climb up to the next one. The first team to cover all four gases, or…the team that’s further along at the end of sixty seconds…wins.”

“This is for the Temple,” Kirk remarks. “Let’s put sixty seconds on the clock!” The clock appears onscreen. “Let me get out of the way here…ready, aim, FIRE!”

Both teams cover up “nitrogen” on their first shot. The Purple Parrots successfully cover up “oxygen” in one shot, while the Red Jaguars get it in two shots. Unfortunately, it’s all downhill from there, as Sara and Megan have trouble dealing with the increased height of the shots. After a lucky shot from Sara, Marcus covers up “argon” with twelve seconds remaining, and that’s as far as anyone gets when time expires.

“Okay, that’s it!” Kirk shouts as he rushes back onscreen. “Not an easy shot when you have to shoot as high as these guys did, but the Purple Parrots managed to make it farther up, so the Purple Parrots get the full Pendant of Life. That means the Purple Parrots have a full Pendant; the Red Jaguars also have a full Pendant—we’ve got a tie! Let’s bring in the tiebreaker pedestal over here!”

A spotter wheels in the tiebreaker pedestal, and both teams position themselves behind it. Kirk stands beside the pedestal and explains the rules.

“Okay, here’s what’s gonna happen. In a few minutes, Olmec will ask you one question. If you think you know the answer, hit the gong in front of you. You’ll have three seconds to answer, and I must accept your first response. The first team to buzz in and answer the question correctly is going inside the Temple in search of the Oxygen-Filled Bell Jar. All clear?” Both teams nod in response. “Okay,” Kirk says. “Olmec…what is your final question?”

Olmec begins to ask the final question of the day:
“Oxygen is one of the two elements that forms water. Is the other one: carbon, hy—”

The Red Jaguars ring in early. “Hy—hydrogen…?”

There is a long pause. Finally, Olmec shouts, “That is correct!”

“The Red Jaguars are goin’ to the Temple!” Kirk exclaims as Megan squeals in delight and she and Brad high-ten one another. “They pulled it out in the clutch—nice work! Purple Parrots, you guys did great, too. We’re not sending you guys home empty-handed—we’ve got a great gift for you, and here’s what that is!” They receive camping gear from Outdoor Products.

As the prize disappears off-screen, we can see Kirk standing beside the winning team. “Now it’s time to see if the Red Jaguars can retrieve the Oxygen-Filled Bell Jar of Joseph Priestley from Olmec’s Temple, and we’ll see that right after this!”

The camera pans in on a fake tarantula on top of a small skull near the edge of the Dungeon as the title appears onscreen, and we go to a commercial.

We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the winning team.

“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “The Red Jaguars have proven themselves worthy, and now have earned the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, Olmec will give them some information that could help them retrieve the Bell Jar of Joseph Priestley…”

Olmec begins to explain the Temple layout as the camera gives us a first-person walkthrough of the Temple:
“You could start…by running up the stairs to the Crypt! Grab the book from the skeletons, and pass into the Bottomless Pit! Swing across the gap, and climb into the Great Seal Room. Place the correct seal in the central holder, and a door may open into the Candelabra Room. Light the correct candelabra, and pass into the Room…of the Mystical Keys! Reach into the compartments to find the two correct keys, and open the door to the SHRIIIIINE of the Silver Monkey! Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Lightning Ball Room. Connect the power cords to create your own lightning, which will blast open the door to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage. Slide down the tunnel to the Dungeon, where you could smash through the wall into the Dark Forest—but beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees! Find the key in the tree, and you’ll enter…the Snake Pit! Place the snakes in the hollow stump, and you’ll gain entry to the Tomb of the Headless Kings. Pull the vine to release the bones, and attach the missing skull to its proper king, then…race through the Pit, climb through the Ledges, rrrrrrace down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone!” Olmec pauses. “You won 1 Pendant in the Temple Games. Who’s going first?”

“I am,” says Brad.

“Very well, Brad,” Olmec replies. “When Kirk gives the signal, you’ll race through the Gate into the Temple and make your way toward the Oxygen-Filled Bell Jar of Joseph Priestley. Hidden inside the Temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but…if you’re caught without a Pendant, you’ll be taken out of the Temple, and it’ll be Megan’s turn to enter and try her luck. If you can reach the Bell Jar, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the Gates with the Bell Jar in three minutes, and you’ll both be handsomely rewarded…and here’s how!”

• Just for making it this far, they’ll get a portable DVD player.
• If they can grab the Bell Jar within three minutes, they’ll also receive a 4-in-1 game table.
• And if they can bring the Bell Jar out of the Temple before three minutes expires, they’ll win a trip to the Bahamas.

“They look like they want that trip, right?” Kirk asks before he holds the microphone up to Brad’s face.

“Y-yeah,” Brad replies, grinning slightly.

“Well, let’s see if they can win it. Everybody ready…mouthpieces in. Megan, what kind of strategy do you and Brad have as far as how you’re gonna get to the Bell Jar?”

“Um...he told me he’s just gonna try to stay high, and maybe take a shortcut somewhere if we find it,” Megan explains. “But, I’m just…gonna see how much he clears out, and take it from there.”

“All right, sounds like a plan,” remarks Kirk. “Is everybody ready? All right—let’s put three minutes on the clock!” The clock slams down in the bottom corner with a gong, ready to go.

“Olmec, lower the gates.” Olmec moans gutturally as the gate is lowered, and the torches and black lights under him go out.

“On your mark,” Kirk begins, “get set, GO!”

Brad trots up the stairs, clutching the team’s only Pendant. A few seconds later, he enters the Crypt, where he pulls all three books, opening the door to the Bottomless Pit on his third pull (2:50). “Whoa—there we go!” Kirk narrates. “Into the Bottomless Pit—the Pit of Despair!” Brad enters the room, grabs the rope, and swings across, catching himself on the opposite ledge. He hits the actuator for the Candelabra Room, and the door opens, so he heads into this room (2:38). “This guy plays hockey, so I think he can take whatever this Temple dishes out!” Kirk says. Brad presses the buttons under four candelabras in the back of the room before one lights up, opening the door to the Great Seal Room (2:29). “Whoa, door’s open,” Kirk says. “Now he’s going up!” Brad climbs the ladder up to the topmost room of the Temple, but no sooner has he stepped off the ladder into the room than he comes face-to-face with the first TEMPLE GUARD (2:19). “Whoa, Temple Guard!” Kirk shouts as Brad jumps back in surprise. “Now he has to give up the only Pendant he has!” Brad fumbles with his Pendant for a second or two before he hands it over to the Guard, and then gets to work on the room objective. He grabs two seals from the back of the room, and then brings them to the central holder, where he places one seal in it. However, nothing happens (2:08). He places the other seal he retrieved, and the door to the Room of the Mystical Keys opens (2:05). “All right—into the Mystic Key Room!” Kirk narrates as Brad presses on. “He’s doing great, and he’s only a few rooms from the Bell Jar!” Brad enters the room and reaches into the top-left compartment in search of a key; however, he comes out empty-handed. He reaches into two more compartments before finding a key in the exact middle chamber (1:50), and after reaching into a few compartments he’s already tried, finds the second key in the middle bottom chamber (1:40). He tries inserting both keys in the second and third pedestals, but nothing happens, even when he switches the two keys around. He tries the first and third pedestals, and still nothing. But when he moves the key from the third pedestal to the second pedestal, the door to the Shrine flies open. He progresses into the room, but the second TEMPLE GUARD ambushes him the second he walks through the open door (1:29).

“Whoa, Temple Guard! Go, Megan!” Kirk shouts, and Megan takes off. She enters the Crypt, and starts following Brad’s path exactly. “He was taken out only one room away—will she make it there in time?” Kirk asks no one in particular. Megan follows Brad’s path exactly (including an unnecessary trip up to the Great Seal Room) before she finally reaches the Shrine (1:00). She goes to the back of the room and grabs all three pieces of the statue before bringing them to the front of the room. She places the base (0:54), the middle (0:50), and jams down the head, opening the door to the Lightning Ball Room. “She’s got the head—wait, the room’s open!” Kirk narrates. After looking around for a few seconds, Megan notices the open door to the room, so she dashes through, heads to the front of the room, and grabs the OYXGEN-FILLED BELL JAR (0:44).

“She’s got the Bell Jar!” Kirk exclaims. “All the doors are open!” Megan starts heading back the way she came, bolting through both the Shrine and the Room of the Mystical Keys (0:36). “She’s doing great—can she make it out with the Bell Jar?” Kirk asks. The camera shows Brad, clapping and cheering as Megan tries to make her exit. When we cut back to Megan, she’s grabbing onto the rope in the Bottomless Pit, where she swings across, almost dropping the Bell Jar in the process (0:26). “She’s gonna do it—back through the Crypt!” Kirk excitedly narrates as Megan enters the Crypt, and soon makes it back through the Temple Gate with the Bell Jar with twenty seconds left on the clock.

“She did it!” Kirk exclaims as Megan and Brad high-five one another. “She got the Bell Jar, and got out with it! They got it all!” Brad and Megan whoop in victory as Megan clutches the Bell Jar tightly. “They got all the prizes—the DVD player, the game table—and they’re both going to the Bahamas!” Brad claps and cheers in excitement as Megan hugs Kirk. “These guys are excited—they should be; they were a great team all day long! But unfortunately, we’ve got to go. We’ll see you next time, and just remember—it’s not just Legends, it’s Legends: Rebirth! Buh-bye!”

Kirk, Megan and Brad wave to the audience and chat as the credits begin rolling. The camera shows various shots of scenery around the set, including two plastic lizards facing one another and a long vine that snakes up the Temple walls outside the Snake Pit. The last thing we see is Kirk and Megan holding the Bell Jar high before the Stone Stanley logo appears.

The Oxygen-Filled Bell Jar of Joseph Priestley
Season 1, Layout 1 (6 overall)
Team
: Red Jaguars (Brad McMillan & Megan Berger)
Artifact Location: The Lightning Ball Room
Pendants: 1
Result: Escaped! (0:20 left)

This episode wasn’t all that exciting on the whole, but it certainly wasn’t the worst in the world. At least the team walked away grand-prize winners at the end, even though they practically had the win handed to them on a platter.

For all purposes, Brad was an average-speed contestant who fortunately knew his way around the Temple. He did, however, make his fair share of mistakes—he failed to try the door to the Great Seal Room in the Bottomless Pit to see if it would open, and he got very confused as to which compartments and key combinations he had already tried in the Room of the Mystical Keys. He was taken out in the Shrine of the Silver Monkey with just under a minute and a half to go.

Megan, fortunately, picked up the scraps. She was only a hair faster than her partner, but luckily, Brad had been taken out only one room away from the artifact, so she only had to put the monkey statue together, which she did surprisingly quickly. After grabbing the Bell Jar with 44 seconds left, she picked up the pace, and made it out with twenty seconds to spare.

I have mixed feelings about this episode. On one hand, the team was fairly slow on the whole, and got extremely lucky with this very simple, straightforward layout. On the other hand, they won the grand prize, and I guess that’s got to count for something. Chalk it up to the producers feeling lenient that day, I suppose.

Rating: 7 out of 10

Notes and Trivia: In addition to being one of only three times that a one-Pendant Temple Run results in victory, this is also the last time the Red Jaguars take one Pendant into the Temple.

This is the only episode where both single-player Temple Games last for only thirty seconds.
