The camera maneuvers through a thick rainforest to stop in front of an ancient temple.  A giant stone head next to the gate of the temple begins to speak:
"LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE! With your guide, Kirk Fogg! And here he is NOW!"

On this final word, Kirk appears from behind the Temple Guard door in the Dungeon and runs straight out into the foreground of the stage to greet the crowd. "Thank you! Thank you very much! Nice to see you! Nice to see you, Olmec! Welcome to Legends of the Hidden Temple.  The rooms are filled with lost treasures that are protected by mysterious Mayan Temple Guards.  Only Olmec knows the legend behind each of the treasures in his temple.  Which legend are we gonna hear about today?"

Olmec replies:
"The Legend of the Revised Map of the New World."

"Oh, the Revised Map of the New World!" Kirk says in response. "Well, one of these six teams will have the chance to retrieve the Map.  Will it be:
"Ty and Caitlin  of the Red Jaguars?" the camera pans to each team in order?
"Mitchell and Sabrina of the Blue Barracudas,
"Erik and Abbie of the Green Monkeys,
"Daniel and Justine of the Orange Iguanas,
"Ray and Arianna of the Purple Parrots,
"Or Harrison and Brittani of the Silver Snakes?"

"They'll have to pass some tough physical and mental tests," Kirk says, "and in the end, only one team will earn the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  But first, they must cross the Moat, and here's how they'll have to do it today:
"In front of each team there's three icebergs that?re floating in the Moat.  When I say go, one player from each team will run over the icebergs to get to the other side of the Moat.  Then his partner'll run across too, but if a player touches the icebergs with a part of a body other than their feet, they?ll have to go back and start all over again."
"As soon as the second player makes it onto the deck, it's his job to run over here and hit the gong." He slams down on the Red Jaguars' gong to demonstrate. "The first four teams to hit their gongs are going on to the Steps of Knowledge.  Hey teams? are you ready?"
The players all cheer and shout in response.
"Olmec, are you ready?" asks Kirk.
"10-4, good buddy!" Olmec replies.
"All right, teams!" Kirk laughs his response. "On your marks teams, get set, GO!"

?There they go! This is fast!? Kirk declares as the teams scramble across the icebergs and make it to the other end of the Moat very quickly, ringing the team gongs almost immediately. ?We got Red Jaguars? Green Monkeys? Blue Barracud? that?s it! We got our four teams!? The fourth gong is heard only nine seconds after the round begins.
The camera cuts to Kirk standing by the Red Jaguars and giving the boy on the team a high-five. ?Red Jaguars over in a flash! They?ll be goin? on to the Steps of Knowledge, along with the Blue Barracudas?? the camera briefly shows each qualifying team? ?and the Green Monkeys? and the Purple Parrots! Orange Iguanas and Silver Snakes gave it a great effort too.  We?ve got a great gift for them for playing and here?s what it is.? Daniel, Harrison, Justine and Brittani will each be receiving a watch provided by Armitron.

The four teams are now at the top of the Steps of Knowledge accompanied by Kirk. "The quest continues, and it's now time for Olmec to tell us about the Revised Map of the New World, but pay attention, teams, because it's your knowledge of the Legend that can bring you a step closer to the Temple."
Olmec begins to tell the legend:
"One of the greatest achievements in the Age of Exploration was the discovery of the New World.  According to legend, between 1499 and 1504, an Italian sea captain named Amerigo Vespucci made four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, and each time, he explored the coasts of Brazil and Argentina before sailing home.  Later on, he wrote a letter to a German mapmaker named Martin Waldseem?ller, describing the islands he found and what he'd seen.
" 'Zat boy is a genius! He's found a new vorld!' Martin proclaimed, and he set out to make a world map.  He renamed the New World 'America' in honor of Amerigo, and quickly the word spread.  However, legend has it Martin later found out Christopher Columbus had already discovered the continent before Amerigo.
" 'I kan't belief I fell for zat!' Martin shouted, and he made a new map with the continent named 'Columbia' instead of 'America,' but it was too late.  The name 'America' had already gotten around and stuck, so Martin got rid of the map with Columbia on it, which made its way to the Temple.  Your quest is to find the Revised Map of the New World and bring it back here."

"Thanks Olmec," Kirk says after Olmec finishes telling the legend. "Olmec, where is the Revised Map?"
Olmec replies:
"The Revised Map of the New World can be found in the Dungeon." The camera zooms in on a parchment tacked to the wall next to the Pharaoh?s Secret Passage, then fades back to Kirk.

"All right.  Teams," Kirk begins, walking down the steps, "you're now standing on the Steps of Knowledge, and in a minute, Olmec is gonna ask you a question.  If you think you know the answer, stomp down on that ancient marking in front of you.  If you're right, you're gonna move down to the next level, but if you're wrong or run out of time, I'll give the other teams a chance to answer.  The first two teams to make it to the bottom level will be one step closer to Olmec's Temple.  Olmec, we?re ready for your first question."

Olmec begins:
?Was the New World renamed for: Christopher Columbus, Henry Hudson or Amerigo Vespucci??
Erik stomps down first and answers: ?Americo? Ves-pew-see???
?Correct,? Olmec answers.
?Nice job, Green Monkeys, step down,? says Kirk, and the Green Monkeys move down to the second step. ?Next question.?
Olmec asks:
?Was Amerigo Vespucci from: France, Italy or Por???
A stomp by Sabrina interrupts Olmec: ?Italy???
?Correct.?
?Blue Barracudas, step down!? Kirk says, and the Blue Barracudas join the Green Monkeys on the second step. ?Next question, Olmec.?
Olmec now asks:
?According to legend, did Amerigo explore the coasts of: North America, Central America or South America??
Erik rings in and, after a pause, answers: ?South America.?
?That is correct.?
?Green Monkeys already just one step away from the Temple Games!? explains Kirk as the Green Monkeys move down to the third level. ?Next question.?
Olmec asks:
?Did he make: Four voyages, Five voyages or Six???
Abbie cuts Olmec off this time: ?Four???
?That is correct!? Olmec shouts, and the Green Monkeys jump down onto the bottommost step.
?There?s our first team going onto the Temple Games! It?s the Green Monkeys!? Kirk announces as the Green Monkeys start to celebrate. ?We need one more team; who?s it gonna be? Next question, Olmec.?
Olmec continues:
?Was America first given that name by???
Sabrina gongs in early: ?Martin? Walled?sem?muller???
?That is correct,? answers Olmec.
?Tough pronunciation!? Kirk comments. ?Blue Barracudas now just one step away from the Temple Games, but we?re looking for two teams.  Next question.?
Olmec asks:
?According to legend, when Martin Waldseem?ller realized his mistake, did he try to change America?s name to: Columbia, Hudsonia or Magellica??
Mitchell buzzes in: ?Um? Columbia.?
?That is correct!? bellows Olmec, and the Blue Barracudas jump down beside the Green Monkeys on the bottom level.
?We got our two teams right here!? announces Kirk, running up the middle of the bottom step before the teams start to celebrate. ?It?s the Blue Barracudas and the Green Monkeys! The rest of you guys, come on down here.? The Red Jaguars and Purple Parrots each move down two steps. ?You guys gave it a great effort too.  We got a great gift for you for playing and here?s what it is.? Ty, Caitlin, Ray and Arianna will each be receiving a $50 U.S. Savings Bond provided by Nestle.
The camera cuts away from the consolation prize to show Kirk between the two qualifying teams at the bottom of the Steps of Knowledge. ?These two teams will be playing for the right to enter Olmec?s Temple,? he says, ?right after this!? The camera zooms in on some of the foliage next to the Temple Gate, then fades to commercial.

Kirk is standing in front of the Temple Gate between the two qualifying teams. ?Welcome back to Legends,? he says. ?Now, of course, the glory goes to the fastest and the strongest, and let?s talk to our two teams.? He turns to his left to talk to the long-haired Asian girl with glasses, who is standing just left of center screen. ?On the Blue Barracudas, we have Sabrina.  How old are you??
?Eleven,? she replies.
?And I understand you like to ride horses and you wanna be a singer,? Kirk says, reading off the index card in his hand. ?Tell me about that.?
?Well,? Sabrina says, ?I like listening to singers like Beyonc?, Carrie Underwood, Avril Lavigne? I kinda like singing, I wanna make it big like them.?
?All right, very nice,? Kirk comments, going to interview the brown-haired boy on the far left of the screen. ?And Mitchell, how old are you??
?Twelve,? he answers.
?Now, I understand you run track, ski and play football,? Kirk says. ?Which is your best sport??
?Um,? Mitchell thinks, ?probably track n? field.  Pretty good with a 50-yard dash.?
?All right, nice,? Kirk says. ?We got a strong team here.  Let?s hear it for the Blue Barracudas!? Sabrina and Mitchell clap along with the audience as Kirk goes to talk with the girl with wavy strawberry blond hair who?s standing just right of center screen. ?And on the Green Monkeys is Abbie. How old are you, Abbie??
?Eleven,? she replies.
?And I heard you like to hang out on the movies with your friends on Saturdays and you want to be a graphic designer,? Kirk says. ?Tell me about that.?
?Well,? Abbie explains, ?um? I liked to draw? and I wanna try to do the same thing with computers, and I wanna make my own websites.?
?Sounds cool,? Kirk replies, going over to the boy on the far right of the screen, who has short hair, brown eyes and slightly tanned skin. ?And Erik, how old are you??
?Eleven,? he replies.
?Now, I understand you like to swim and you run track, but you play a lot of video games,? Kirk says. ?Tell me about that.?
?Yeah,? Erik explains. ?I have a PS2 and a GameCube, and my older brother has a lot of games we play together.  My favorite?s probably Kingdom Hearts.?
?This is one hi-tech Green Monkeys team,? Kirk comments. ?Let?s hear it for ?em!? The audience applauds for Erik and Abbie for a moment.

?You guys ready to play?? asks Kirk.
?YEAH!? The players shout as a reply.
?All right! Go get ready for the Temple Games,? Kirk says, and the players walk offscreen. ?In the Temple Games, each team will be competing for these?" he opens a pouch and pulls out a small gold medallion to show to the camera? "Pendants of Life.  The winning team will need those Pendants to protect themselves from the dreaded Temple Guards as they make their way through the Temple.  There are three Temple Games.  Olmec, tell us about Temple Game #1.?

Olmec begins:
?According to legend, America got its name from Amerigo Vespucci, who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, explored the coast of South America, then returned to Italy.  Lucky for you, in this game, your journey will be much shorter.  When Kirk gives the signal, sail to the island, get out and mount your flag on the island.  Then, turn around and pull yourself back to the dock.
?The first player to mount their flag and return with both feet on the dock? or the player that?s further along after 30 seconds? wins.?
?Both players ready? Okay,? Kirk says, standing in the middle of the dock. ?Let?s put 30 seconds on the clock.? A countdown clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen. ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
Sabrina and Erik are evenly matched on the way out to the island; they make it out and each plant their flags with fourteen seconds remaining.  However, Erik manages to turn the boat around and pull himself back faster, returning to the dock with just two seconds left and meeting Kirk a second after time expires.
?All right, that?s it!? Kirk announces. ?Green Monkeys made it back first, so they get a half Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds for a moment. ?Blue Barracudas can catch up in the next game, it?s worth a half Pendant.  Olmec, tell us about it.?

Olmec continues:
?For a great mapmaker like Martin Waldseem?ller, a map shows the entire world.  In this game, you must find four quadrants of a world map and complete the map.  When Kirk gives the signal, fling yourself onto the spider web in front of you and climb up to one of the cubbyholes and break it open.  If the cubbyhole contains a section of the map, come back down with it, unfold it and place it in the proper place on the board.
?The first player to correctly complete the map? or the player that correctly places the most sections of the map in 60 seconds? wins.?
?It?s a real world war with our two teams,? Kirk says. ?Let?s put 60 seconds on the clock.? A countdown clock appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen. ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
Mitchell and Abbie launch themselves onto the nets and make great time climbing up.  Abbie cracks open the container just right of the middle, but it?s empty (:54).  She moves a bit further to the left and tries the center hole just as Mitchell gets there as well.  For both players, the first parts of their maps are inside, and they jump down as soon as they get them.  Both players take a couple of seconds to unfold the maps, and they stick them on the boards with 45 seconds left.  On their second try, Abbie meets a couple more empty cubbyholes, but Mitchell comes back with his second quadrant with 28 seconds left, just a little sooner than Abbie does.
?Right now, it?s looking pretty even neck-and-neck!? Kirk remarks.  Mitchell gets his third quadrant on the board with 16 seconds left while Abbie, who?s slowed down a bit, is still climbing up to one of the only two cubbyholes left, both of which are on the right wall.  She brings down the third quadrant with only eight seconds left.  She tries to hurry up and get the last quadrant of the map, but Mitchell beats her to it, completing the map with two seconds left.
?All right, that?s it! C?mon over guys!? Kirk announces as the clock freezes and fades away.  Mitchell and Abbie walk over. ?Blue Barracudas judged it out? ?scuse me, just edged it out? and they get the other half Pendant of Life!? The audience applauds for a few seconds as Kirk high-fives Mitchell. ?So it?s all tied up, a half Pendant apiece, and this next game is worth a full Pendant.  Olmec, tell us about it.?

Olmec narrates:
?According to legend, Amerigo Vespucci went on four different voyages.  On the wall above you are the names of four places he visited: ?Guyana,? ?Trinidad,? ?Argentina? and ?Brazil.? When Kirk gives the signal, load the slingshot and fire a ball.  Your partner will then catch the ball and stick it onto the first target.  Once you?ve covered a target, that place has been visited, and you can climb up and try to complete the next stage.
?The first team to complete all four voyages? or the team that?s further along in 60 seconds? wins!?
?This is for the Temple Run,? Kirk explains. ?Let?s put 60 seconds on the clock.? The countdown clock appears onscreen. ?On your mark, get set, GO!?
Both girls have pretty good aim from the start, but Abbie clearly has a bit better aim than Sabrina from the start? Erik catches a ball and sticks it on ?Guyana? with 49 seconds to go.  The Blue Barracudas even the score at :45, however, but the Monkeys take the lead again when they cover ?Trinidad? with 38 seconds on the clock.  The Barracudas manage to catch up again at :26, helped by the fact that Abbie?s aim gets a bit worse as she has to shoot higher, but the Green Monkeys again take the lead when Erik covers ?Argentina? with 20 seconds remaining.
?Green Monkeys just need one more to win! Blue has to catch up!? Kirk remarks as the Blue Barracudas scramble to cover ?Argentina.? They do so with twelve seconds left, then move up to ?Brazil,? following the Green Monkeys.  The Barracudas try their best and come close to covering ?Brazil? first, but the Monkeys complete the Temple Game with four seconds left.
?Okay, that?s it! C?mon down guys! C?mon over girls!? Kirk announces, reappearing onscreen. ?Green Monkeys made it all the way to Brazil with a few seconds left, so they get the full Pendant, giving them a Pendant and a half? they?re goin? to the Temple!? Abbie jumps up and down and hugs Erik, while Kirk goes to talk with the Blue Barracudas. ?These guys gave it a great effort too.  We got a nice gift for them for playing and here?s what it is.? Mitchell and Sabrina will each be receiving a copy of Cars on DVD.
The camera cuts back to Erik and Abbie with Kirk in front of the equipment for the third Temple Game. ?We?ll see if the Green Monkeys can make it through Olmec?s Temple, retrieve that Revised Map of the New World,? he says, ?right after this!? The camera weaves around the equipment in the Temple Games arena and zooms in on one of the golden doors in the Switch Inferno before fading to commercial.

Kirk stands in front of the Temple's stairs next to Erik and Abbie. "Welcome back to Legends!" he says to the camera. "The Green Monkeys have proven themselves worthy and earned the right to enter Olmec's Temple.  But before we get started, Olmec's gonna give them some information to help them retrieve the Revised Map of the New World."
Olmec begins to give the rundown:
?You could start by climbing through the Crevasse and climbing down into the Great Chasm.  Crawl through the pit, then race into the Crystal Cave.  Pull down the correct icicle, and you could choose to go up into the Cathedral, or into the Junction of the Secret Shafts.  If you escape, you might have a chance to enter the Switch Inferno.  Hit the right actuator to go upstairs, or plow through the wall and into the Dungeon, where you can grab the Revised Map of the New World.
?Climb up the Pharaoh?s Secret Passage into the Geographer?s Study.  Take the correct book off the bookshelf to open the door to the SHRIIIIIIIIINE of the Silver Mooooonkey! Assemble the statue, and you may be headed toward the Knights? Barracks.  Place the sword in the correct sheath, and you could enter the Laser Light Room.  Find the right combination to unleash the power of the laser, and swing on the rope back across the Great Chasm.  Then, pass through the Arctic Antechamber, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate.  The choices are yours and yours alone!? Olmec pauses for a second. "You won 1 ? Pendants in the Temple Games.  Who's going first??
"I am," says Abbie.
"Very well, Abbie!" replies Olmec as Kirk hands out the Pendants of Life. "When Kirk gives the signal, you'll race through the gates into the Temple and make your way toward the Revised Map of the New World.  Hidden inside the Temple are three ventilation shafts that let out in the Junction of the Secret Shafts, as well as Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms.  You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on BUT if you're caught without a Pendant, you'll be taken out of the Temple? and then it'll be Erik's turn to enter and try his luck.  Hidden inside the Temple is the other half of your Pendant.  If you can find it and you?re carrying the other half, you will get an extra life.  If you can reach the Map, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish.  Return through the gates with the Revised Map of the New World in three minutes, and you will both be handsomely rewarded? and here's how!"
?   For just getting into the Temple, they?re both going to get a set of microscopes provided by Tasco.
?   If they can grab the Map in three minutes, they?re both going to get a 19? TV by Magnavox.
?   And if they can get the Revised Map of the New World out of the Temple before 3 minutes is up, they?ll both be cruising to the Bahamas! A four-day cruise aboard Norwegian Cruise Line, with two pools, volleyball and basketball courts.  Norwegian Cruise Line.  It?s different out there.  A four-day cruise to the Bahamas, for a prize package totaling $14,170!

"Time to see if we can get these Green Monkeys on that cruise," Kirk says before turning to Abbie. "Abbie, get out in front.  Mouthpieces in.  Olmec, lower the gate!"
Olmec groans gutturally as he lowers the gate; the blue lights under him are turned off.
"Set the clock for three minutes." The countdown clock appears onscreen. "On your mark, get set, GO!"

?There goes Abbie! They got two Pend? a Pendant and a half!? Abbie runs up the stairs to the Arctic Antechamber, only to meet a?
?TEMPLE GUARD! Right off the bat!? Kirk shouts as Abbie stops in her tracks, ambushed by the Temple Guard.  She fumbles with her Pendant of Life for a bit, finally handing it over to the Temple Guard with 2:43 on the clock.  She then pushes down the nearest ice wall? the rightmost one, which opens the door leading down into the Crevasse.  Abbie then goes through the door and crawls through the ledges, reaching the lower crawl tube? the only working one? with 2:21 remaining. ?Next time a Temple Guard gets her, it?ll be turn for Brian to go!? She passes through into the Great Chasm, then walks across the room, hits the actuator for the Crystal Cave and slides through, entering the room with 2:11 to go.  However, before she can start in on the objective, out from the corner of the room jumps the second TEMPLE GUARD!
?Oh, Temple Guard! Go Erik!? remarks Kirk, sending Erik into the Temple with 2:08 left.  Erik runs up into the Arctic Antechamber, goes down into the Crevasse, heads on into the Great Chasm and crawls into the Crystal Cave with 1:44 remaining.  He looks around for a second before jumping up and trying to pull down the stalactites from the ceiling.  The first one he pulls down? the one stage-right of the ladder? is the correct one, opening up the door leading into the Cathedral, and he decides to climb the ladder upwards (1:38).  ?All right, he?s making good time, but now he?s in the Dragon?s Lair? I mean, the Cathedral Room!? Kirk comments as Erik starts the search for the missing parts of the stained-glass window.  He finds the first two pieces without a lot of trouble (1:29), then spends a while finding the third.  While searching for it, he finds the hidden half Pendant on the back wall and picks that up with 1:22 remaining.
?Oh, he?s got the other half Pendant!? explains Kirk, and the audience bursts into applause. ?He?s got another life!? Erik finally finds the last piece of glass to complete the window with 1:13 left, then takes all three up to the window and puts them in place.  When he completes the window (1:07), the black pattern on the walls lights up violet and the sheet on the wall in the back of the room shoots up, revealing the ladder leading upwards.  The door directly into the Knights? Barracks doesn?t open, so Erik climbs up into the Laser Light Room.  He kneels down in front of the laser generator and starts rotating the sections of the column part so that the glass segments of them are aligned, but before he can make any real progress, out jumps the third TEMPLE GUARD!
Erik inches back, startled. ?Okay, there?s the last of them!? Kirk explains as Erik gets up and hands over the Pendant halves.  The guard vanishes with 55 seconds left, and Erik goes back to the column to finish what he started.  He completes the puzzle with 45 seconds to go, causing the glass indicators on the generator to light up and the dome to emit a white laser beam.  Erik heads down the stairs stage-left and through the newly-opened doorway into the Knights? Barracks, where he immediately grabs the sword from the front railing and sticks it in the middle sheath.  A lucky guess lets him pass into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey with 37 seconds remaining.
?All right, he?s into the Shriiiiiine of the SIIIIIIL-ver Monkey!? shouts Kirk as Erik climbs up onto the cupboards in the back of the room. ?He?s gotta get the three parts? No? Maybe he?s got a plan, I dunno!? He grabs the base and the head, then puts the base in position, only having a little trouble putting one of the corners in (0:29).  He tries to put the head on top first, but then he realizes he forgot the middle and goes back to get that (0:24).  Erik finally gets the middle, having a little trouble turning it properly, but gets it in (0:19!) and then puts the head on top, jamming it down with fourteen seconds left.
Only one door opens from the Shrine of the Silver Monkey: the door downward into the Switch Inferno.  Erik takes a moment to notice the door, then jumps down the ladder into the Switch Inferno with just nine seconds remaining.  He runs over to the rock wall and breaks it down, entering the Dungeon with just six seconds to go. ?He?s in the room! Get it!? Kirk shouts out, with Abbie looking on nervously.  Erik quickly moves across the room, reaching the far ledge with three seconds left.  He jumps up and gets a hand on the REVISED MAP! He tears it down off the wall? but we?re out of time!
?He did it! He got the Map!? Kirk shouts, and Abbie screams in excitement. ?It was really close? it came down to the last seconds! I didn?t even know if he was gonna make it! But they got the Revised Map of the New World, so they get the microscopes AND the TV?s! Nice job by both teams? both players!? Kirk high-fives Erik as he returns to the foreground, Revised Map in hand, and Abbie hugs the two of them. ?These were a great Green Monkeys team, and I wish we could stay, but we gotta get outta here.  Join us next time for another great Legend of the Hidden Temple! And you thought the episode before this ("The Navigation Plans of Sir Francis Drake") was a nailbiter! This is definitely the closest successful acquisition to date.  The fact that the players constantly went for the first door that opened seemed to help them out, though the only real mistake made by either player was Abbie going down into the Crevasse after only trying one ice wall in the Arctic Antechamber, and even if she could've accessed the Great Chasm directly from the Antechamber, that wouldn't have left enough time for Erik to make it out, since the Temple design was pretty difficult anyway.  Erik started off slowly, but he picked up the pace after meeting the third guard in the Laser Light Room.  Only a few seconds were left when he entered the Dungeon, and when he tore the Revised Map off the wall just as time ran out, it was enough to earn these Green Monkeys the second prize.

Abbie is the last of four players that failed to try all the ice walls in the Arctic Antechamber.  This is also the closest successful grab of an artifact, and this episode also has the shortest Moat on record: nine seconds.  Also, because of the last-second grab in this episode, every Temple Run on the Layout IX "icebergs" production day featured the team at least grabbing the artifact in time (two of the four episodes? "The Lost Love Letter of Jos?phine Bonaparte" and "The Silver Earring of Captain Kidd"? were wins).

Whew...talk about a close shave! That was a mad dash for the map there at the end!

And...coincidentally, I was planning to do a legend about Amerigo Vespucci quite soon...great minds think alike, I suppose.
