We return from the break to find Kirk standing in front of the Temple with the winning team.
“Welcome back to Legends: Rebirth,” he says. “The Purple Parrots have proven themselves worthy, and now have earned the right to enter Olmec’s Temple. But first, Olmec’s gonna give them some information to help them retrieve the Inaccurate Map of Gerard Mercator…”
Olmec begins to explain the Temple layout as the camera gives us a first-person walkthrough of the Temple:
“You could start…by running up the stairs to the Crypt! Grab the book from the skeletons, and pass into the Bottomless Pit! Swing across the gap, and climb into the Lunar Landing. Align the puzzle on the satellite, and a door may open into the Clockwork Room. Set the clocks for the correct time, and pass into the Room…of the Mystical Keys! Reach into the compartments to find the two correct keys, and open the door to the SHRIIIIINE of the Silver Monkey! Assemble the statue and you may be headed toward the Room…of the Secret Password. Find the tablet with the correct inscription and shout it out to open the door to the Pharaoh’s Secret Passage. Slide down the tunnel to the Dungeon, where you could smash through the wall into the Dark Forest—but beware of the Temple Guards that may inhabit the trees! Find the key in the tree, and you’ll enter…the Jungle Ruins! Climb over the ruins, and you’ll gain entry to the Atlantean Altar. Uncover the tile that lets in the waters of Atlantis, then…race through the Pit, climb through the Ledges, race down the stairs and back through the Temple Gate. The choices are yours and yours alone!” Olmec pauses. “You won 2 Pendants in the Temple Games. Who’s going first?”
“I am,” says Russell.
“Very well, Russell,” Olmec replies. “When Kirk gives the signal, you’ll race through the Gate into the Temple and make your way toward the Inaccurate Map. Hidden inside the Temple are Temple Guards assigned to protect three specific rooms. You can trade your Pendant for an extra life and go on, but…if you’re caught without a Pendant, you’ll be taken out of the Temple, and it’ll be Sherri’s turn to enter and try her luck. If you can reach the Map, all the doors of the Temple will instantly unlock, and the Temple Guards will vanish. Return through the Gates with the Inaccurate Map of Gerardus Mercator in three minutes, and you’ll both be handsomely rewarded…and here’s how!”
• Just for making it this far, they’ll get a digital camera.
• If they can grab the Inaccurate Map within three minutes, they’ll also receive a sports package from Outdoor Products.
• And if they can bring the Inaccurate Map out of the Temple before three minutes expires, they’ll win a ski trip to Aspen, Colorado.
“All right, let’s see if we can get ‘em to Aspen,” says Kirk. “Both of you, mouthpieces in, please. Let’s set the clock for three minutes!” The clock appears in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
“Olmec, lower your gate, if you please.” Olmec moans gutturally as the gate is lowered, and the black lights under him go out.
“Ready, Russell?” asks Kirk.
“Yeah,” Russell replies.
“On your mark,” Kirk begins, “get set, GO!”
“There he goes, up into the Temple!” Kirk narrates as Russell dashes up the stairs and disappears behind Olmec. “Which way’s he heading?” Russell answers Kirk’s question by taking the upper path to the Crypt. The first book he pulls opens the door to the Bottomless Pit, and he progresses through it (2:52). Russell grabs the rope and swings across the gap in the Pit, hitting the actuators for the doors to the Lunar Landing and the Clockwork Room; only the door to the latter room opens (2:46). “All right, that door’s gonna take him into the Clock Room!” Kirk explains. “He’ll have to set the clock to the right time in there!” Russell glances at the large clock on the door at the back of the room, set for twelve o’clock. He goes to work on the stage-right clocks first, setting all three of them for the same time as the large clock. He then goes to work on the stage-left clocks, and sets them all for twelve o’clock with little difficulty. The door to the Lunar Landing opens, but also reveals the first TEMPLE GUARD in the process (2:20). “Oh, Temple Guard, behind the door!” Kirk shouts. “Give him the Pendant, and he’ll leave you alone!” Russell does as Kirk says, quickly handing over his Pendant. The Temple Guard moves aside, and Russell starts climbing the ladder up into the Lunar Landing, emerging in the room a few seconds later (2:00). “Now he’s in the Lunar Landing Room; he’s gotta put the satellite together!” Kirk tries to explain. “Or, he’s gotta line it up, I’m sorry!” Russell goes to the center of the room and begins working on the cylindrical stone column, which is decorated to look like a satellite. Space-age beeping and other futuristic noises can be heard as he maneuvers the cylinder into position. When he successfully aligns the markings on the satellite, a loud sound like a rocket launching is heard, and a recorded man’s voice says “Liftoff! We have liftoff!” as the door to the Room of the Mystical Keys opens (1:37). “All right, we have a liftoff!” shouts Kirk enthusiastically, imitating the voice. “Now where’s he headed?” Russell heads toward the door to the Room of the Mystical Keys, but it didn’t go down all the way. He pushes the door down with his foot and progresses into the room, but before he can do anything, the second TEMPLE GUARD jumps out from hiding (1:30).
“Oh, another Temple Guard!” Kirk shouts. “Go, Sherrie!” Sherri darts up the stairs to the Crypt, retracing Russell’s steps. “She’s got a big path cleared out; all she has to do is follow it!” Kirk exclaims. Sherri takes the high path, ignoring the open door from the Clockwork Room to the Room of the Mystical Keys, but she does make it to where Russell was taken out (1:22). She looks around for a few seconds, trying to figure out what to do until she sees the nine compartments on the wall in the back of the room. She reaches into the bottom left compartment in search of a key, but comes out empty-handed (1:17). Sherri continues her search, working her way up the compartments until she finds one key in the middle compartment. “There’s one key, she needs to find one more!” Kirk narrates. Sherri reaches into the rightmost middle compartment next, and pulls out the second key (1:10). She brings them back to the front of the room and inserts one key into the cylindrical column on the left, which lights up red and produces a whooshing sound. Sherri inserts the other key in the middle column, but nothing happens. “Is it gonna be the last one?” Kirk asks. Sherri inserts the key in the rightmost column, which lights up red, opening the door downward to the Jungle Ruins (1:00). “That’s it, the door’s open,” Kirk narrates. Sherri tries to head into the Shrine of the Silver Monkey, but at the last second, she notices the open door to the Jungle Ruins, so she begins climbing down the ladder into this room instead. “Now what…oh, she’s in the room!” Kirk exclaims as the camera shows Russell clapping and cheering. “She’s in the Jungle Ruins! All she has to do is get the Map!” Sherri steps off the ladder, lopes around the fake foliage to the front of the room, and grabs the INACCURATE MAP (0:49).
“She’s got it!” Kirk shouts. “Now can she get back out in time?” Sherri climbs over the plastic plants and stone structures in the Jungle Ruins and climbs through the open door into the Atlantean Altar (0:42). “Forty-two seconds—she’s got plenty of time!” Kirk narrates. She dashes through the Pit, entering the lower crawl tube of the Ledges a short time later (0:35). She laboriously climbs through the room and runs back through the Temple Gate with 28 seconds to spare.
“She got it!” Kirk exclaims as a fanfare of trumpets blares. Russell raises his fists in the air and begins cheering, and he and Sherri high-five. “She got it out! Russell did most of the work, and she made it out with the Map! They got it all—they got the digital camera, the sports package—they’re goin’ skiing in Aspen, Colorado!” Russell and Sherri high-ten as Kirk puts his hands on both team members’ shoulders. “They’re happy, I can tell! This was a great, great—Purple Parrots team, I’m really glad we could meet ‘em. But we’ve gotta get outta here, though. But we’ll see ya next time, and remember: it’s not just Legends, it’s Legends: Rebirth! Buh-bye!”
Kirk, Russell and Sherri chat and wave to the crowd as Sherri proudly holds the Inaccurate Map high as the credits roll. Close-ups are seen of several rooms in the Temple, including the Atlantean Altar, the Jungle Ruins, and the Dark Forest. A rubber snake is seen climbing a tree somewhere on-set, and Kirk and the winning team is seen one final time, waving to the crowd, before the Stone Stanley logo appears onscreen.
