Iron Maiden - "Caught Somewhere In Time"

Shame this one never became a live staple - it's easily the best album opener that Maiden ever did, and Adrian Smith has one of his best solos in this one too. Somewhere In Time is definitely an under-appreciated classic.

Pink - "Dear Mr. President"

If I were to listen to pop music more often, it would only be if more songs like this existed.  Most of the time, the lyrics of songs matter a lot to me, and those that talk about having a good time at a party or whatever just don't appeal to me in the same way as those that tell much deeper stories.  Of course, I don't expect a lot more pop songs about poetic fantasies and literary epics, but a little more social commentary would be fine by me, especially considering how many of those I can relate to.

...And honestly, even this song means a lot more to me now than it did when I first heard it five years ago.  As I've been getting older and more aware of the outside world, my preferences have changed as well.  There's definitely a correlation between the two.

Oh, I don't think I could ever go back to pop... or at least modern pop, since it's taken a very electronic direction lately and frankly, the sonic quality of the entire instrumental aspect of the style piss seven kinds of hell out of me.

Stratovarius - "Learning To Fly"

Elements, Pt. 1 is probably the best vocal performance I've heard by Timo Kotipelto so far (still have about four more Kotipelto-era Strat records I need to check out, though). I need this album now.

Sonata Arctica - "Weballergy"

I know this band does quite a few slower songs as well, but I feel that at least 60% of their first two albums is comprised of songs at exactly the same fast tempo such as this one.

Testament - "The Evil Has Landed"

Paul Bostaph is one of the best thrash metal drummers I've ever heard. He definitely does the best fills, anyway.

Iron Maiden - "Cómo Estáis Amigos"

Virtual XI is probably Maiden's St. Anger-equivalent, but all in all it's still a strong release (although I do prefer The X Factor) and shouldn't be put down just because it's not Bruce on vocals. Blaze Bayley is a great vocalist that fits in well with this darker era for the band.

Symphony X - "Set The World On Fire"

Quite possibly my favorite band in the progressive subgenre right now; and the instrumental that leads up to this song, "Oculus Ex Inferni," is the most dramatic metal song I've ever heard - it almost sounds like a film soundtrack, and I absolutely love it.

Okay, I can only name a handful of songs in which Lars uses a ride cymbal, and almost all of them are on Kill 'Em All. Has he even had one in his drum set since the Seattle live show in 1989, for that matter?
